San Manuel Library still rockin’

The San Manuel Community has seen a lot of loss and closures in the past few years, BUT the local library is here to stay and continues to seek ways to serve our community. We continue to be a source for entertainment (through books, DVDs, video games, programs), information (computers, free WiFi connection, and state supplied research databases), and services (copier, fax, digitalization station, tech-support class, Inter-library loans). We continue to search for ways to help our community with things like introducing Accelerated Reader section to children’s books and purchasing more historically based novels and Arizona history materials. We will soon be starting a notary public service. So, how can you as a community member help sustain the San Manuel Library? Here are some ways we need your support: • USE THE LIBRARY AND ITS RESOURCES. Part of our funding comes from grants from the county and state. Our usage numbers must be reported to receive those monies and materials. • DONATE MONEY TO THE LIBRARY. Even though we own the building, we must pay for upkeep, utilities, insurance, and programs. Since we do not have a city government or a local industry to support us, this is difficult for us to do without your financial support. The grants from the county/state meet only a small portion of our operating budget. Your donations make up most of our budget. A donation jar is available whenever you are in the library and an annual fund drive will start February 1st. “KEEP THE LIBRARY ROCKIN’” is our fund drive theme this year. Celebrate our library by donating. Financial contributions may be dropped off at the library or mailed to San Manuel Library, 108 W. 5th Avenue, San Manuel, AZ 85631. • VOLUNTEER 2-3 HOURS A WEEK. The library is always seeking volunteers who are willing to work 2-3 hours a week. Inquire at the front desk about doing this. • VOTE FOR MEMBERS OF LIBRARY BOARD. Our library is a volunteer-run organization and is overseen by our board as required by the Arizona Corporation Commission for non-profit status. This 5 member board oversees the day-to-day operations, maintaining the library and providing volunteers to work. Three positions are open to election this year for a two year term. Election will take place January 17th-26th at the library and you must have a library card to vote. The profiles of those running for the three positions are below. Chaille McGrew: Chaille is a long time resident of the community and taught for over 20 years in the San Manuel School District. She has been a volunteer at the library since her retirement and has served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years. While working

and raising her children, Chaille made good use of the library and appreciated all those that volunteered to keep the library running and now wants to do her share to keep the library in good shape for the present and future patrons. Linda Lee: Linda has lived in San Manuel since 1971 and has volunteered at the library for several years during the 70s and has presently worked in the library since 2010. She is currently serving her third term as the Chairman of the Board. Linda enjoys volunteering in the library because of the people that visit the library and helping maintain a serviceable library for the community Louise Krouse: Louise has lived in San Manuel for 43 years and worked for the San Manuel School District for 31 ½ years. She dearly loves

volunteering at the library here in San Manuel helping people and learning new skills. She is currently the Board Secretary and would love to continue serving our library by once again being elected to the Board of Trustees. Wanda Greenshields: Wanda recently moved to San Manuel, where she and her daughter have a home cleaning business. One of the first places Wanda visited in the community was the library because she is an avid reader. She quickly signed up to become a library volunteer. Being a member of the library board of directors would enable Wanda to help the library to remain a vital part of life in the San Manuel community. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE LIBRARY AND ALLOWING US TO CONTINUE TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY.

Mammoth Police adopt families to give back to community

Christmas time can be a burden on many families in our communities. To help alleviate this burden, and give back to their community, officers from the Mammoth Police Department (MPD) and MPD Chief Tamatha Villar made the decision to adopt eight families this Christmas, and help bring some joy to these children. Mammoth Police joined officers from across the State of Arizona to participate in the W. Steven Martin Police Toy Drive. On Dec. 22, Chief Villar, some of her officers and town staff April and Erica Garcia shopped for toys for 12 Mammoth children to help bring some Christmas

cheer to their families and develop better relationships with the community they serve. “We are so thankful to have the opportunity to serve our community in this manner and to continue to work to foster meaningful interactions and relationships with the children and families of the Town of Mammoth,” said Chief Villar. “Giving back to the community is the greatest part of public service.” Villar continued, “We hope the generosity of our officers went a long way to help those families enjoy the holiday season just a little more.”

Young man seeks cure for Parkinson’s Disease By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner Jeremiah Pate is a 19 year old student currently attending the University of Arizona. He is studying bio-medical engineering. He has been working in a laboratory on finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. He believes he has made a breakthrough. Jeremiah is not your average 19 year old or college student. He has won state and national awards in science including Arizona’s Future Innovator of the Year in 2015. In 2017, his project for curing Parkinson’s disease took 1st Place in his category and 3rd Place overall in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. This competition involves nearly seven million competitors around the world. By being a winner in the competition, he

received an all expenses paid trip to attend a seminar for young scientists and attend the Nobel Prize Awards in Stockholm Sweden. He also received a $3,000 cash prize and a $40,000 tuition scholarship to the University of Arizona. His interest in Parkinson’s disease grew out of his joining the First Baptist Church in Mammoth. Jeremiah is from Oro Valley and followed his pastor, Joe Ventimiglia, to the church in Mammoth. Joe V, as he is known, is now the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mammoth. There he found that there were three or four members of the 35-person congregation that had Parkinson’s. He was inspired by Jessee Walker and another member named Barry and the way they were dealing with the disease. Jeremiah said that Parkinson’s is more common than we think. There are 53 million people worldwide with the disease. He began researching the disease and after being turned down by 19 laboratories around the country, he was approved to use a lab at the University of Arizona that does research on Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Jeremiah has created an algorithm and computer program to research and experiment with gene therapy treatments for the

disease. He is working on a treatment that will use the human body’s own cellular defense mechanisms to fight the disease. Using fruit flies that have been programmed with the disease, he is attempting to re-program the protein in cells that is linked to Parkinson’s. It has been successful on fruit flies reversing the Parkinson’s disease and essentially becoming a cure. Fruit flies are commonly used in the research of diseases in humans. Seventy five per cent of the genes that cause disease in humans are found in fruit flies and their genes closely match those of human genes. The next step in finding a cure is to experiment on human cell cultures. Jeremiah has found a laboratory in Austria willing to do the tests but it will cost $10,000. He has raised nearly half the funds and is looking for donations to supplement the rest of the cost. The Patio Café in Oracle will be catering a fundraiser at the Oracle Center for the Arts at 700 Kingston St. off of American Ave. The Oracle Piano Society donated the venue for the fundraiser. The menu includes BBQ chicken, ranch beans, Cole slaw, cornbread and cookies. Cost is $35 with proceeds going to “Chasing the Cure”. To purchase tickets or make reservations, Continued on page 16
