OBITUARY William ‘Bill’ Buttery Dr. William “Bill” Buttery went to be with his Lord on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Jo) of 21 years; sister, Mary (Buttery) Carter; children, Amy (Steve Littler), DeeDee (Tom McKinney), and John Buttery; nephew, David Sleep; step-children, Debbie Knight (Mark Wenz) and Jim Knight (Debbie); grandchildren, Tyler, Lauren, Preston, and Davis; step-grandchildren, Samantha (Brandon Wilson), Luke, Tyler and Hailey (Russell Johnson); and greatgranddaughters, Kara and Cassidy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Frances Buttery of Darlington; grandson, Sam Buttery-Littler; step-granddaughter, Kristina

Bill earned his BA at U of Wisconsin, Master’s from the U of Minnesota, and Doctorate at ASU. After relocating to Arizona in the mid-70’s, Bill held numerous teaching and administrative positions, retiring as the Campus Dean of Central Arizona College – Aravaipa in 1987. He was very active in economic development in Pinal County and was recognized by the Pinal County Development Board in 2002 for his many years of service.
Bill never met a stranger or missed the opportunity to have an enjoyable conversation. He dearly loved his family, friends, pets, garden, workshop, and his signature hat collection – each hat had a story behind it. The world is not as bright without Bill Buttery. He was one of a kind and we will miss him forever. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at the Elks Lodge in San Manuel, Arizona, on Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Bill’s memory.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR In support of Dr. Crawford I read the article by James J. Hodl in Wednesday’s paper regarding Dr. Crawford. I am being told that he lives in San Tan Valley. Why did he have the need to have this article printed? Every one here knows what is going on. Does he live here or care about anyone here? I doubt it. I am writing in defense of Dr. Crawford. I have also read the charges by the Medical Board. Really want to know what all this is about? Big business destroying the little guy! No one is saying that all of these meds were dispensed over a 7 year period! The last one was in 2017? Why wasn’t it
questioned then? Where is the culpability of the Pharmacy dispensing the medicine? I have been a patient of Dr. Crawford for over 30 years. I have never known him to dispense meds just to give meds. He will see patients that have no insurance at a reduced cost. That’s more than I can say for our local clinic. What I feel is that he is being targeted because he will not convert to Electronic record keeping and medicine dispensing! They have been after him for several years to convert. They don’t seem to understand the cost involved or the fact that he

does not have the patient base to be able to afford it. Most rural area doctors do not . What I also know is that the medical board has put many elderly patients at risk here because they cannot get their medicine. Not just Opioids, NONE of them if they were prescribed by him! Insulin, Test strips, inhalers, blood pressure medications, NONE!! While we do not live in the Valley and do not have access to any doctor available, as well no public transportation, it is hard to find a replacement with 2 weeks notice!

Should Dr. Crawford have made a better attempt to answer the charges, maybe! I am being told he did, but can I prove that? NO! Maybe he did and no one, except him, is saying that or wants you to know. Rural area patients have a hard enough time getting Doctors to come here! We cannot afford to lose another one! I think everyone needs to withhold judgement pending all the facts when he has his hearing! Good luck Dr. Crawford. I hope you are able to survive this! /s/ Carol Lewis

Road Construction, Water Wells and More
he paving project on the 77 in Mammoth and north is speeding along. It won’t be long until the construction delays will be over and the road will be smooth and kindly to car suspension systems. It’s a great job, but I wish ADOT had continued just one mile to the south. There’ still has a distinctive reminder of how bad the road used to be! All told, though we should thank ADOT for a much-needed improvement. The winter weather continues warm and dry. The saguaros are using up their reserve moisture. Yes, the drought continues. But there’s good news for Kearny residents, For the last couple of weeks or so, extra water has been brought to Kearny from well number eight, north of town in the foothills of the mountains. Drilled several years ago, the wells in that area went dry quickly owing to aggressive pumping. Now, with a new pump and wiring, well number eight is supplying
water on an occasional basis to the water tanks. A new chlorinator is in use. A filtration system for minerals will not be needed because the water from this well is remarkably free of minerals. The news is good because there will no drought restrictions during the summer months. As you may realize, most of Kearny’s water comes from well number two, near the golf course, which is part of the Gila water agreement. If there’s not enough water in the San Carlos Reservoir to meet irrigation needs, our allotment is reduced. But now, with well number eight (and others to come on line later) the town’s water supply will be secure for the first time since the Town of Kearny was founded. Yippee! Well number eight is being used on a part time basis to top off the town’s water tanks. Well number two is still our most robust well, our mainstay, but the additional water from number eight makes
all the difference in the world. Other work has been done too. The pumping station to Kearny’s north side has been refitted to keep the pressure up and steady. Well done, Mayor Sommers and Council, along with Anna Flores and all the public works employees. Adequate water is necessary not only for people living here, but for new businesses to consider locating here. Jovanna Martinez Calzadillas, shot in the head by the Las Vegas killer, has shown remarkable improvement and is now at home. The need for medical funds is still critical, so her friends in Hayden have organized a golf tournament for Saturday, Feb. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. There will be other family and kid events, too, all for the medical fund. No. 14 Bearcats defeat Lobos, 53 – 42 By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News Sometimes you can’t predict the right outcome in rivalry games because anything can happen. The 14th-ranked Ray boys’ basketball team achieved the expected outcome at rival Hayden last Friday night, a 53 –
42 victory. Any win is a good win, even if the result is closer than some expected. “We came out slow and played to their level,” said Bearcats’ senior Nathan Molar, who finished with a double-double – 12 points and 13 rebounds – to go along with seven assists. “In the second half we turned it
up and played our kind of basketball – fast paced.” The Cats finish with three-straight home games, including the regularseason finale versus No. 2-ranked NFL Yet Academy. Molar believes the Cats are beginning to play the type of basketball that could result in the ultimate goal.
“I think (we) are peaking at the right time, turning it up a notch at practice, and finally getting used to each other,” he said. “I think we will make a deep run in the playoffs if we play our kind of basketball.” Up next: Feb. 1 vs. Duncan and Feb. 2 vs. NFL Yet Academy. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lady Cats look ready for postseason By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News
Ray’s Chasity Kelley (#2)faces off against Hayden’s Ali Perez, Jaden Gonzales and Brandi Lopez (#23).. James Carnes | CBN
The fifth-ranked Ray girls’ basketball team looks like a team that’s ready for the playoffs. The Lady Cats have won seven of their last eight games, including a 66 – 26 victory last Thursday against 2A San Manuel and a 55 – 37 win the following
night at rival and No. 14-ranked Hayden. Ray’s only loss during the recent eightgame stretch was a 49 – 47 loss at home on Jan. 19 to second-ranked Ft. Thomas. “As long as we stay focused and keep working hard at practice we’ll be well prepared to compete at state,” Shelby Yocum told the Copper Basin News. Up next: Feb. 1 vs. Duncan at 5:30 p.m.

Chisholm Relations
ome of those who read my Georgie Digs articles say it is obvious that I like history, especially family histories. I think that it is only natural that I have often mentioned Aravaipa Creek because I had lived there for many years and did learn quite a bit of its history and the people who had earlier lived there. I believe that much history is lost because of not being passed on to later generations via letters, memoirs, or the media. I wonder if there are many large family reunions anymore. On Jan. 12, 2013, I, with my daughter, Frances (Wood) Meyer, who we call Francie, and with her cousin, Lynn Wood, son of my husband Cliff Wood’s brother, Fred Wood, attended a Chisholm Family Reunion at the impressive San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona. This reunion was not about Jesse Chisholm who has been stated to be the one that the Chisholm Trail was attributed to. My husband Cliff Wood’s mother, Frankie Belle (Middleton) Wood, was a great-granddaughter to Richard H. Chisholm whose history in Texas is included in Zenna Chisholm Snowden’s book that was available at that reunion. It was stated that Richard H. Chisholm had started the town of Clinton, Texas. Also included in that book are many pictures of descendants of Richard H. Chisholm and their families. The book listed the four children born to Richard H. (Jennie) Fore. In March of 1868 on one of his freighting trips, Glenn Thornton was killed at the age of 37 during a wagon accident. Of the nine children who had been born to he and his wife, the fourth born was Cora Ellsworth Chisholm, the mother to Frankie Belle, my husband Cliff Wood’s mother. I may at another time add more about Cora’s life, although it was not all good. I was impressed that in one photo of Glenn Thornton’s wife, Jane, she looked so much like her granddaughter, Frankie Belle. Well, all of us are the results of the genes of so many ancestors that there is no telling what one child will look like. I know my three children, Ann, Francie, and Neal, do not resemble each other, and I enjoy trying to figure out where they got their good looks! It sure wasn’t me!

Daughter repairs Lobo mural in memory of her mom Sometimes, it’s all about family connections. Over the Thanksgiving break, Esther Yanez’s daughter, Jennifer Suarez, came from Florida to visit her grandparents in the Copper Basin area and decided to visit the school where her mother painted the Lobo murals back in 1978. While admiring her mother’s paintings, Jennifer noticed there was a patch of one of the Lobo missing. When asked what happened, she was told that there was a hole that had been patched up but no one was ever able to repaint the Lobo, leaving him looking a bit like Humpty Dumpty. Jennifer asked if she could paint and fix the Lobo. The school said, “Absolutely!” Jennifer’s mom, Esther, who graduated from Hayden High School in 1971, was the original designer and painter of the Lobos. They have hung in proud honor since 1978. Esther passed away last year and it was a special honor for her daughter to repair the Lobo with her Aunt Jeannie. A plaque was presented at Friday night’s game to Esther Yanez’s family along with a promise the school intends to keep: at any time that the murals need a repair, the school will only call Jennifer to repair them.
Esther Yanez’s family was recognized at Friday night’s basketball game during halftime. Receiving the award were her son, Justin Hune, mother Elizabeth Yanez, father Pedro Yanez and sister Jeannie Castaneda. James Carnes | CBN
