LETTER TO THE EDITOR Potluck or not? Some questions have arisen recently regarding “Potlucks” at the Oracle Community Center. The following is provided by County Health staff for residents’ information. I hope it helps answer some questions: We understand there has been some recent confusion between food service and potlucks at a local senior center. Senior centers, which are open to the public, often serve meals to the local community. Since they are preparing and serving food to the public, this requires that they have a permit from the local health department and that they follow food safety guidelines.

One food safety rule that applies to all food establishments is that food prepared in a home kitchen may NOT be served to the public. All food must come from an approved source and be appropriately prepared by trained staff in the approved kitchen. In cases where home prepared foods are being served, this is a violation of the health code from a safety perspective. The Arizona Legislature recently clarified language to clearly exempt non-commercial social events such as potlucks from permit requirements. Potlucks are events where a group of people get together socially and share food that they have prepared with each other. It is a private social gathering, NOT OPEN to the public, where food is shared. Potlucks have neither historically nor currently required any approval from the health department. One important point where people may become confused is how the determination of what is food service and what is a potluck is made. Simply calling things a

Immigration Politics: A Double-Edged Sword

eff Sessions, President Donald Trump’s appointment to US Attorney General, if confirmed, will run point on immigration and border enforcement. Sessions drew to an inside straight when Trump won. Once shut out as a fringe player, he has been ushered into the center of the new administration - a good fit for Trump who began his campaign by calling Mexicans entering the USA “rapists” and “criminals”. Sessions is a smarter, better dressed version of Russell Pearce, a politician who’s obsession with immigrants drove the nation’s most repressive anti-immigrant legislation for more than a decade. For five years of Governor Janet Napolitano’s

Mammoth Police Report According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Activity listed from Jan. 18-25. Jan. 20 Domestic violence was reported in the 600 block of Vine Ave., Mammoth. Jan. 22 A motor vehicle accident was reported in the 400 block of Hwy. 77, Mammoth. Jan. 25 Thomas Casillas Jr., 34, Mammoth, was arrested in the 600 block of San Manuel Dr., Mammoth, and was charged with criminal damage. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. administration his ambitions were stalled by her vetoes. When she left to head the Department of Homeland Security, Pearce was unbound. A raft of his legislation was signed into law by incoming Governor Jan Brewer. Pearce fully embraced fantasy-land threats posed by immigrants conjured up over the years. He proved out as a blunt force instrument for anti-immigrant propaganda and legislative assault. What happened to Pearce is that his one note agenda, true believer that he was, finally wore thin in a way that led to his crushing defeat in a legislative primary race in 2014. Russell Pearce worked hand in glove with two law enforcement politicians, one in the twilight of his career the other on the rise - Sheriffs Joe Arpaio (Maricopa County) and Paul Babeu (Pinal County). Tuned to the Pearce mantra - torment and dehumanize immigrants to reduce their numbers in Arizona - Arpaio and Babeu made national names, shuffling in and out of Fox News shows, drawing crowds, and burnishing their resumes with high profile endorsements of other politicians, including John McCain, seeking to capitalize on anti- immigrant energy. In 2016 both sheriffs won their respective Republican primaries. And both were badly beaten in the general. Their obsessive preoccupation with immigration did them in. Exit polls showed that only about 1 in 10 voters named immigration as their most important issue, and three-quarters said they supported a path to legal status for immigrants. Arpaio’s downfall stemmed in part from a criminal contemptof-court charge for his acknowledged defiance of a judge’s order in a racial profiling case based on actions of his immigration patrols. His immigration obsessions generated intense opposition and landed him in federal court at great cost to taxpayers. Babeu, known only for his hard line on immigration and hyperbolic fear mongering, failed to become a credible voice on other issues more important to voters in Arizona Congressional District 1. He carried his home county - Pinal - by only 1624 votes. In contrast, Trump carried Pinal County by roughly

GUEST COMMENTARY By Frank Pierson Special to the Miner 25,000 votes as did Senator John McCain against challenger Ann Kirkpatrick. Babeu lost the election in overwhelmingly Republican Pinal. Copper Corridor Community Food Hub becoming a reality By John Hernandez Copper Area News Imagine if local schools were able to source local produce to serve to children. This is the most basic reasoning behind the partnership of the two economic development groups in the Copper Corridor. They want to create a food hub for local farmers and institutions – and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is backing it. Plans are in the works for a possible Community Food Hub. A Food Hub survey is being conducted by and sponsored by the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation, Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) and Local First Arizona who have partnered to determine if there is enough community interest and if the community has enough resources and support for a Food Hub. Public meetings and surveys are being conducted to determine the interest and feasibility of a Food Hub for the copper communities area which includes the towns and areas of Oracle, San Manuel, Mammoth, Aravaipa, Dudleyville, Hayden-Winkelman, Kearny, Superior, Globe-Miami and San Carlos. This is funded through a grant from the USDA.

Planning continues with community input Oracle Park, Nuestro By Joshua Delauder San Manuel Miner Approximately a dozen Oracle residents showed up Thursday night to help put in more of their ideas for the redesign of the Oracle Park (on Nuestro). Around last September, after the initial meeting for the Oracle Park redesign, Kent Taylor, the Open Space and Trails Director for Pinal County, went with a few members of Oracle to the U of A to help choose some designs for the park. Michael Cimino, a second- year graduate student of the U of A School of Landscape Architecture and Planning, and his fellow classmates put those designs into five different projects. The Oracle residents were invited to the Oracle Fire Station to write down what they did and didn’t like about each of the five project designs. Those ideas were written on Post-It notes and put on the bigger maps of the park redesigns. In addition to the Oracle residents attending, Pete Rios, the Pinal County Supervisor for District One and vicechairman, attended. With these inputs, Kent and the fellow members of Oracle are one step closer to developing the final masterplan for the park. However, Kent said that it will probably take at least a few more months to whittle everyone’s ideas down into the final masterplan. Cimino added that starting this semester, this project will be all his.

Oracle residents review the plans drawn up by University of Arizona student Michael Cimino and his classmates. Cimino wanted to know the public’s opinion before pursuing one design over another. Joshua Delauder | Miner

IMMIGRATION Continued from page 3

Babeu himself attributes his defeat by roughly 17,000 votes to the ethics hammering he took from $2.5 million spent by the DNC targeting his candidacy. That was a factor but his hyper identification with the immigration issue which was rapidly loosing traction with voters spelled ultimate defeat. If Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump track in the same direction long term as Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Sheriff Paul Babeu and State Senator Russell Pearce - embracing a fantasy world that scapegoats and demeans immigrants - I suspect they will meet the same fate. The Arizona experience suggests that immigration politics is a double edged sword capable of slicing up the most ardent of politicians - true believer and opportunist alike. About the author: My wife Mary Ellen Kazda and I moved to Oracle, AZ from Queens,

NYC in March of 1979. We left the world of professional organizing with the IAF to head west. For a time we worked together building cabinets. I returned to full time organizing with IAF in March of 1990 after a stint as a civic participation consultant and community college class recruiter. Shortly after arriving in Oracle we became actively engaged in local community issues and organizations. Over the years we helped spearhead drives to close a a nearby toxic waste dump, discourage massive housing developments proposed to ring the town, build the Oracle Community Center, organize an Oracle Town Hall Steering Committee, and strengthen community responses to catastrophic fire. One or both of us have served on virtually every non-profit board in town from the mental health clinic to the Oracle Historical Society.

Some of the activities they provide for consumer awareness are educational workshops, community meetings & events, food bank donations and composting programs. Their goals are to “connect our food growers to grow a stronger economy and healthy communities”. Karalea Cox of the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation says that a Food Hub “provides services to producers that a farmer’s market does not. Food Hubs are one of the keys to fixing the problem of food deserts.” The survey of regional food producers and consumers is being conducted now and will

be ongoing for a few more months. They would like to hear from food producers no matter how small your garden, farm/ranch or business. If you raise cattle, pigs, chickens, grow produce, nuts, or sell/produce, tortillas, eggs, baked goods, honey, jams/jellies, etc. please take the survey. Consumers should take the survey to help determine what produce and food products are wanted in the community. How far one is willing to travel for quality food items and what type of Food Hub is needed in the region to fill the demand. You can take the consumer survey at http://bit.ly/foodhubconsumers. The survey for farmers/producers: http:// conta.cc/2iNuaUZ. You can also learn more about Food Hubs by visiting their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/ CopperCommunitiesFoodHub/. Organizations and groups can also contact the Copper Communities to have them give a presentation about the Food Hub and what it can mean for the community.

Superior ends Cinderella story for Mountain Vista By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The No. 2-seeded Superior Jr. High School eighth-grade boys’ basketball team ended No. 5-seed Mountain Vista’s dreams of a championship, defeating the Cougars in the Central Junior High League Tournament Championship, 32 – 28. Following a first-round bye, the Jr.

Panthers defeated No. 3-seed and tournament host Ray in the semifinals, 31 – 20. The Cougars pulled upsets in the first two games against No. 4-seed Miami (35 – 30) and top-seeded High Desert (41 – 37) and were looking to make it three-straight against the Jr. Panthers. Mountain Vista gave a valiant effort but fell short in the end and finished as the CJHL Tournament Runners-Up.
