Local schools take safety precautions in the event of active shooters By Mila Besich-Lira Copper Area News In the wake of the Florida school shooting, news reports and just about every television station has shown coverage of students who are demanding stricter gun control to prevent future school shootings. Reminders of the often harsh world we are living in bombard social media threads and sometimes, there is a calm that something like that would not happen in these small towns. While these situations seem to be thousands of miles away from the Copper Corridor, that has not meant that local school districts have not had to deal with threats of gun violence. Many of the districts are ensuring that emergency plans are revisited and everyone has a clear understanding what to do should
something like a school shooting happen on campus. Thursday morning parents, students and administration of the Superior Unified School District viewed social media posts proclaiming that “SHS will be Shot Up Today” from a fake profile by a person named Ray Andres. School Administration and Superior Police did not take this lightly, even though it turns out that the social media posts were running rampant throughout the United States. The Superior School District in Superior, Wisconsin alerted the Superior Unified School District on Thursday that their school also took special precautions and upon investigating the online threat their local police determined that the internet threat started from a computer in Flagstaff, Arizona. Superior (AZ) police department is conducting an
investigation as well and has subpoenaed the social media posts and profile. This particular threat affected many schools throughout the nation with the initials SHS and will more than likely become a nationwide investigation. Superior Police Department posted officers at both schools as a precaution and parents were notified via Facebook and the Schools Way App that the police would be on campus throughout the day. The school and Superior Police plan to continue having officers on campus for the next few weeks and every morning. “We are very pleased with the communication and follow through during this situation,” said Superintendent Steve Estatico. Throughout the day the school was able to provide parents information using social media. The district did not count the absences of students who
stayed home that day as many parents decided to keep their children home as a precaution. Superior Police, Fire and the School District are working on conducting evacuation and intruder drills to ensure that students know what to do should such a situation arise. Parents at Ray Unified School district received a letter from the school district explaining that the school had received a rumors of a credible threat of school violence from a student. In the letter from Superintendent Curt Cook explained that there is an ongoing investigation by Kearny Police Department into the matter and that the school will be using one main point of entry going forward. At press time no further information could be given as to the status of the investigation.

Former Superior resident Tomerlin signs NLI with Ottawa U By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun Former Superior resident and current Desert Ridge High School senior Bobby Tomerlin was one of six Jaguars’ football players to sign his National Letter of Intent on Feb. 7 during a signing event hosted at the school. Tomerlin, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker, signed with in-state Ottawa University, which is located in nearby Surprise. “I chose Ottawa University because they are the only school that is willing to give me a shot and they believe in me,” Tomerlin answered when asked why he signed with the Spirit. “I’m not going to let them down.” According to Tomerlin, Ottawa coaches want him to compete at middle linebacker. His experience playing for Jaguars head coach Jeremy Hathcock proved to be beneficial. “Competing at Desert Ridge High School taught me toughness and how to compete for what I want,” Tomerlin said. “(I won’t) let anything stop me from reaching my goals.” After moving from Superior in 2008, during the middle of second grade, Tomerlin has persevered in pursuit of “trying to fulfill my dad’s big shoes in playing college football and becoming a man.” Hathcock described his senior linebacker as an “overcomer.” “Bobby is a very driven individual,” Hathcock told Continued on page 8

Superior Community SHRED-A-THON set for March 31 Superior - On March 31, from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m., Superior Community Shred-A-Thon will be held at Superior Town Hall, 199 N. Lobb Ave. This event is sponsored by Superior Police Department, The Superior Chamber of Commerce, AARP Arizona and Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer. What’s the point? Actually, thanks to the way the event has been planned it is two-fold. The first, as the event is named for, is to shred sensitive documents. You may bring up to five 13-gallon trash bags or bankers boxes per person. In this day and age, this is no longer a consideration for only financial institutions or businesses. Everyone is potentially at risk for identity theft. All it
takes is the wrong sort of person getting a hold of a document with information that could give them access to an account. Bank and credit card statements should be kept for three years, just in case there is a problem that needs to be addressed between you and the institution. Older statements, as well as voided or canceled checks and online purchase orders should be shredded, as they contain your bank account or billing information. This is also true of any documents that you no longer need for your personal record-keeping which have your date of birth, driver’s license or State ID number, Social Security number, work or home phone number, or full name and address. Many of us already know this. Did you

know how dangerous junk mail can be, though? Most junk mail has a computer barcode that can contain information that identifies you. Especially this is true when you receive the sort of junk mail that says you have already been approved for an insurance plan or a credit card. Mail from associations, such as AARP, also should be shredded. If you have children, keep in mind that thieves do not engage in age discrimination. If you have loved ones who have died and you are going through their paperwork, remember, thieves do not have any qualms about attempting to take over their accounts. If you shared an account or in any way could be responsible for a debt of someone who passed away, you could find yourself with

more than one kind of grief if you don’t shred their paperwork when it is time to move on and clear away. Since you’ll be at the event anyway, take some time to consider another safety factor. Keep unused and expired medication out of the wrong hands by bringing them for disposal. You may dispose of prescription and over-thecounter solid medications, tablets and capsules, including medications for pets. You may not dispose of injectables, syringes, needles or EpiPens, asthma inhalers, thermometers, intravenous solutions, creams, ointments or liquids. This event is free. Defending champ Superior drops season opener By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun The defending 1A State Champion Superior baseball team blew a three-run lead in a season-opening loss to visiting Globe last Friday. The Panthers held a 4 – 1 lead entering the seventh inning before the Tigers scored five runs in their half to steal a 6 – 4 victory. Superior sophomore Gabe Otero went 3-for-4 in the loss. Jesus Castellanos and Kale Major, both juniors, each hit doubles.
Joshua Marquez, a freshman, drove in two runs and Nathan Duarte, another freshman, drove in another. Major, the Panthers’ ace, was outstanding in his 2018 debut, allowing only an unearned run on a pair of hits in five innings pitched. He fanned seven Tigers’ hitters while surrendering four walks. Up next: Feb. 28 vs. Santa Cruz Valley at 3:15 p.m., Mar. 1 vs. Hayden at Florence (Padilla Tournament) 10 a.m., and Mar. 2 at Florence (Padilla Tournament) 1:30 p.m.
God Makes Life More Enjoyable
I
n the small New Testament book of 3rd John, we read in verse 2: “I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul prospers and gets along well.” Simply put, a good life is related to your spiritual health. The condition of the physical side of life is determined by your faith and trust in God. Life is to be enjoyed, and this becomes easier when we have God on our side. We must realize that it is God’s desire that our life not be complicated and that we can walk in His truth. The soul is the direct connection to the heart of God. It is our life line to heaven and all the good things the Lord desires for us. God smiles when we enjoy His
