LETTER TO THE EDITOR Lots to love about the San Manuel Library “I love this library!” A fellow San Manuel Library user said that to me one day and I had to agree. I, too, love having a library here in San Manuel. It may look small from the inside, and it is; but, because it is linked to the Pinal County Library system, consisting of 12 libraries and access to the books held in the Central Arizona College libraries located at the three campuses, it provides me- an avid reader, researcher and writer- and the citizens of San Manuel with a massive library in a small building. This was a concern for me when I moved here four years ago, but I have been very pleased. I have not missed my several-thousand-square-foot big-city library at all. The biggest difference between the library I left in Texas and the one in San Manuel is the funding. Here, the library desk is maintained by volunteers. Many have been volunteers for several years and are glad to help you with any questions, faxing, or getting your request filled. Unlike libraries in incorporated cities that are funded through the city tax base, there is no tax base for the San Manuel Library. San Manuel is an unincorporated town. Pinal County provides the computers, the internet access and a majority of the library materials, as well as a small annual grant. However, all of that is useless to the user of the library if the lights are not on. So where does this library get a majority of the money to operate? Part of the money comes from a few things: the fines collected on overdue items, the small fees charged for the use of the printers/copier/ fax machine, and the annual book sales /on-going book sales in the library. But, the lion’s share of operating income is from people like you and I. Those who drop coins or dollars in the donation box located on the checkout desk and from those who send in checks or cash during the library’s annual fundraising drive, and, throughout the year. It takes your dollars, and my dollars, to ensure that there is a library here in San Manuel. Every quarter, dollar or donation check helps not only to keep the lights on but the heating and cooling, as well as the alarm system, the fire alarm system, and the insurance on not only the library
building, proper, but, the community center building across the street. The money that comes in also helps to buy some books and DVDs that the county does not provide and to support programs such as the Summer Reading Program (along with an expanding series of programs for the community). So what is available here in San Manuel at YOUR public library? There is free internet access that is available for use with your personal electronic device and the library’s four laptops, six desktop computers and a teen room with five computers for gaming or teen use for school. There are two B&W/color printers to print from the in-house computers for a small fee, and a large copier with fax capabilities for public use, for a small fee. A new service that began in January is a digitalization station. You now have the ability to convert your personal memory VHS tapes, slides and audio cassettes and save them to a flash drive (copyright prevents converting any commercial movies). This is a free service that only requires setting up an appointment since the copying is in real time. I have my daughter’s wedding to convert for my grandson. The library also stays up-to-date on the latest movies, books and graphic novels, audiobooks. The movies nominated for an Academy Award this year are or will be available for checkout at the library for a seven-day loan. If there is an older movie you want to see, it can be requested from one of the other libraries. The same is true with books. I am reading the Alex Cross books by James Patterson, so, I have requested the ones not in San Manuel from other libraries. If you are wanting to research a topic, you can find the books you need in the Pinal County Library System. I have been researching one of the hot social issues and have found more than a dozen books on the topic. If you are wanting to binge-watch your favorite show, the library has an extensive collection of T.V. series on DVD and can usually order, from other libraries, the seasons or series not available in San Manuel. The library also sponsors various events for the community such as a genealogy workshop and a conversational Spanish class, as well as various children’s
Mammoth Police Report According to state law, police may arrest suspected offenders by two methods. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damage amounts are estimates. Items are given to the San Manuel Miner by the Mammoth Police Department and reflect information available at the time the report is compiled. Mammoth Police Department
dispatches for Mammoth agencies and the San Manuel Fire Department. Activity listed from March 2-8. March 2 Theft was reported in the area of Hwy. 77. March 8 Thomas L. Casillas, 35, Mammoth, was arrested in the 700 block of Tiger Dr. on a warrant. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. Calls not listed include: medical assist (12), suspicious activity (1), citizen assist (6), fingerprint (1), welfare check (2), 911 call/hang-up (4), information (1) and animal complaint (2).
activities throughout the year. Other events are in the planning stage. You may think that you have no use for a library card, but, I have met people who didn’t have internet access at home, but, needed access due to a trip or needed to take care of some business that required printing off a form from some business. They can get a card and take care of their business knowing that if they needed to do it again they could. Or, their child had a book for required reading, but, they didn’t want to go buy a copy for the class. With a card, if the book is in the system, they could have it in a week, less if available in San Manuel. So one never knows when a card may come in handy and if you have never had one, they are free. Get one for each member of the family. If you have lost your card, a replacement is available for only two dollars. On my card I can check out three movies, eight books, and two games. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and, closed on national holidays. So, yes, like my fellow library user, I love having this library here. And I hope it stays for years to come. /s/ Tony Collins

U.S. Forest Service seeks public input on criteria for Resolution Copper mining debris tailings site
Concerns on how site would affect local life and the environment sought at two workshops By James J. Hodl Copper Area News Officials with the U.S. Forest Service and Tonto National Forest will conduct two public workshops this month to collect information on what the public deems important with regard to mine tailings as the Forest Service analyzes alternate locations for Resolution Copper’s proposed tailings facility. Resolution Copper’s General Plan of Operations (GPO) for a large-scale copper mine near Superior proposes that tailings (the waste material left over after processing) be pumped as a slurry to a tailings disposal facility located on national forest land between the towns of Queen Valley and Superior. The tailings facility would grow in phases, and eventually occupy about 4,400 acres (including associated structures) of national forest land. The first workshop is scheduled to take place March 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Superior High School located at 100 Panther Dr. (formerly 100 Mary Drive) in Superior. The second session is set for March 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gilbert Southeast Regional Library located at 775 N.
Greenfield Road in Gilbert. “The workshops are not intended as a ‘vote’ for any specific alternate tailings location,” according to U.S. Forest Service Project Manager Mary Rasmussen. “Instead, using given workshop criteria, the sessions will allow attendees to provide feedback on what they feel are the most important variables to consider for a tailings location. “This feedback will give the U.S. Forest Service a means for evaluating alternate tailings locations using stakeholder derived interests and values,” Rasmussen explained. The workshops are part of an ongoing effort to develop and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for approval of Resolution Copper’s GPO concerning proposed large-scale mining operations in the Oak Flats area. It is separate from a parallel EIS being developed concerning public use of the Apache Leap area west of Oak Flats that Resolution Copper traded with the U.S. Forest Service to secure copper mining rights at Oak Flats. Of special concern is how the modern copper mining technology Resolution Copper will use to remove copper
deposits deep underground through vertical shafts by employing a technique called block caving. The method requires less blasting and drilling when compared to traditional mining. Copper concentrate extracted by this process will under the Resolution GPO be pumped 22 miles southwest along the existing Magma Railroad corridor for additional processing. Tailings left after processing will be disposed at a tailings facility 5.5 miles Continued on page 12

Miners’ offense struggling this season By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel baseball team is battling through a current six-game winless streak, mainly due to lack of run support. The Miners’ offense has scored three or fewer runs in five of their last six games and pushed across four runs in a 12 – 4 loss at Santa Cruz Valley on Feb. 28. Good pitching and little offense was story in a 5 – 3 loss against San Tan Foothills on Mar. 4 in the Joe S. Padilla Tournament.
Sophomores Frankie Gonzales and Christian Estrada each had a hit and an RBI against the Sabercats. Estrada’s knock was a double, one of four in the game for the Miners. Benny Laguna, Saul Quijada and Alejandro Camacho hit the others. Pitchers Angel Barriga and Josh Sharp were the bright spots. The duo combined to allow five runs, four earned. Barriga, a sophomore, did not allow a hit in his inning and two-thirds outing. Sharp fanned two and did not allow walk.
The ball heads straight for the catcher’s glove.

Faith in Action at Catalina church provides donation for Tri-Community Food Bank
Members of the Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church with donations collected for the Tri-Community Food Bank.
Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church, located in Catalina, has a mission statement that says: Centered in Christ, Caring for Community. For several years this local church has dedicated a specific day to enact that statement and February 19 was such an event. There are traditionally 5 “off site” locations where church members provide services to people identified by IMPACT as having a need for some modest home/yard improvements, as well as offering the talents of the church choir to entertain the residents at the Brookdale Care Facility on Oracle Road. Other projects that took place at the church facility included: creating 80+ Easter cards for homebound recipients of meals provided by Interfaith Community Services; collecting clothing for the homeless people served by Southside Presbyterian Church; making pillowcase dresses for children in Africa; sending special letters to missionaries who have relationships with our church; and this year assembling 160 hygiene bags for seniors who are clients of the Tri-Community Food Bank in Mammoth. This local church has also worked with a refugee family from Africa and during this day wrapped baby shower gift items for the mom who is expecting a little girl within the next month. This caring group of Mountain Shadows congregants completed the day with a luncheon of sandwiches and joyful comradery. For more information on MSPC view our website: www. mountainshadowschurch.org.
