A letter or e-mail from you, your children, the kids at church or at school is the best thing to send to our military. Let us not forget the people who are serving our country. If you need information OperationMilitarySupport. com is a great place to start. Marion Springer, author and gyrocopter instructor, waves before taking off in a tandem ride last year behind local pilot Britta Penca. (File photo) The weekend of May 13, the San Manuel Airport will be abuzz with information, speculation, and, of course, aviation, as those from curious to fanatical come together for a Gyroplane/Helicopter event, complete with food vendors, speakers, aviatrixes and authors. “Gyroplane? What’s that?” do you ask. If you’ve seen the movie Road Warrior, you’ve seen a Gyrocopter, or Gyroplane. It looks sort of like a mini-helicopter that’s been bred with a golf cart, or, maybe a bumper car. Not, then, a sturdy looking aircraft that inspires confidence in that majority; but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in the wonder of adventure. Imagine being able to construct your own flying machine, in your backyard and being able to
afford to fly it, once it was made! Many people have done and are still doing this very thing and that is what this event is organized to celebrate: construction of and adventure in rotorcrafts. So, drive, flit, fly, or foot your way in to the San Manuel Airport, Friday - Sunday, May 13 – 15, to see what rotorcrafts is really all about. Yes, there will be food vendors on site, on Friday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Sunday for breakfast; but, there will be so much more than a quick nosh and a gander at a gyro. On Friday evening, at 6:30 p.m., Bruce Charnov, author and Hofstra University professor, will discuss his book From Autogiro to Gyroplane, of which New York’s Channel 4, had this to say:
“Bruce Charnov has written an exceptional book, and the first to tell in detail quite extraordinary story of 80-years of autorotational flight aircraft. It should prove to be a valuable reference resource for many years to come.” Dr. Charnov is not a gyro pilot but he is a historian with an intense passion for gyroplanes. On Saturday evening, at 6:30 p.m., another author, Marion Springer, will discuss her book Born Free - My Life in Gyrocopters. Springer is the first female to become a gyroplane certified flight instructor. She has been flying since the late 1960s and, at 81 years of age, she is still flying her gyroplane. San Manuel carport fire investigated for possible arson; vehicles destroyed Investigators have not yet released their findings about the source of a fire that destroyed several vehicles and partially damaged a house in San Manuel late last month. On April 23 at 3:08 a.m., Pinal County Sheriff’s Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a vehicle fire at 230 Avenue C. A second call came shortly after that one also reporting the fire. When the deputy arrived on the scene, he saw that the carport area of the house was engulfed in flames, but the main living portion of the home was not yet on fire. A group of young adults were seen in the front yard moving away from the fire. The deputy questioned them and was told that they had seen the fire and were trying to wake the residents. It was unclear if anyone were home.
The deputy also tried to rouse any sleeping residents by checking the back door and eventually breaking windows in the living area and the bedroom. It appeared as if no one were home. San Manuel Fire Department arrived on scene and the firefighters began to battle the blaze. A neighbor observing the fire told the deputy that the home’s owner was out of town and that no one was in the home. Once the fire was doused, a survey of the damage revealed that a motor home, sand rail and a van were all completely destroyed. The carport was completely destroyed as well. The main living portion of the home, though, sustained minor damage. San Manuel Fire Chief John Stanford began looking at the scene for a source for the
fire. He told the deputy that he was unsure but suspected that the source was electrical and that the fire started in the motor home. He checked for an extension cord connecting the motor home to the house’s electrical power but was unable to locate one. He did locate a vehicle battery in the engine compartment of the motor home but was still unsure about the cause of the fire. Stanford later told the deputy that he had spoken to neighbors who reported hearing voices earlier in the vicinity of the motor home. He recommended that they call in a fire investigator. The case was then turned over to Arson Investigator Stephanie Lin McKee of the Golder Ranch Fire District and a detective from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: On Thursday, May 12, at 6 p.m., an Oracle Town Meeting is scheduled to be held at the Oracle Community Center (OCC), to begin a public search for an alternate site for the new cell phone tower that has been proposed for installation in Oracle by Verizon Wireless. The original site, first proposed some 17 months ago by Verizon, was to be on the hilltop just north of the Oracle Market, in the historical center of town. This site was problematic, because of its location near occupied residences, the Pinal County Oracle- Briggs EMS Helispot, and two National Register of

Historic Places properties. In addition, neighboring property owners were concerned by this tower’s potential negative impact on property values, the scenic viewshed, and possible yet-unknown health and safety issues from this installation. Most Oracle residents welcomed an improvement in cell phone service - especially the Oracle Fire Department (OFD), which depends upon a Verizon Wireless system for their emergency c o m m u n i c a t i o n net. However, because of the negative impacts cited above, many who opposed the tower felt an alternate site for this tower was needed. The goal of this Town Meeting is to enlist the residents and property owners of Oracle in a
transparent effort to seek and identify viable sites for a tower. Pinnacle Consulting, Inc. - the agent that represents Verizon Wireless in this project - has agreed to consider as many as ten alternate sites, if that many can be identified. Obviously each of these sites must meet the technical and engineering requirements that are needed by Verizon Wireless to produce this improved cell phone service. The agenda of this meeting will include a presentation by Chad Ward, the representative from Pinnacle Consulting, Inc., so interested landowners will have a better idea of the elements that are required for a site to merit consideration for this installation. Please circle the May 12 date on your calendars, and

Supervisors approve $2.1M of budget reductions for FY 2011-12
FLORENCE – In their Wednesday meeting, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors took a major step in balancing its upcoming budget by adopting $2.1 million in cuts for the new fiscal year, which starts in July. County Manager Fritz Behring has recommended $5 million in cuts to the general fund for next year as part of a multi-year effort to bring county spending in line with existing revenues. To date, staff has identified and the Board has approved, $3.3 million in cuts to the general fund and $1.4 million in other funds. The county manager has said the remaining $1.7 million in spending cuts will come from all departments – primarily in the form of reductions to operating line items. The first budget reduction proposal the Supervisors considered and approved was a $617,000 cut to Correctional Health, a Pinal County Health & Human Services program. These cuts would eliminate five full-time positions and 10 part-time

Lady Miners move up to #11 in AIA power rankings; will face Miami in state playoffs By Frank Smith The San Manuel varsity softball team has moved up in the rankings from #16 to #11 after a series of wins and losses the past couple of weeks. The Lady Miners continue to stay on the upper side of the win – loss column, staying competitive in close games and keeping focused on playing deep into May. On March 30, the ladies traveled to Vail to take on Empire in a very exciting game in which the lead changed several different time with San Manuel coming up short in eight innings 6 – 7. The Lady Miners scored two runs in the first inning to start things off, the ladies scored another run in the second inning to take a 3 – 0 lead. Empire would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the second to cut into the lead 2 – 3. The Lady Miners scored a run in the fourth inning to add to the lead at 4 – 2. The Lady Ravens then scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5 – 3 lead. San Manuel scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game up at 5 – 5. The Lady Miners hosted the Lady Lions from Pusch Ridge on April 14 and took a tough 2 – 8 loss as San Manuel was looking to gain a lead in the region and move up even further in the power rankings, instead they were handed the set back. In the circle was LeGrand with Castro catching. LeGrand faced 40 batters in seven innings, allowing seven hits, six defensive errors, three walks and had eight strikeouts. Offensively, the ladies only had five hits. LeGrand went 2 for 3 with singles, and a stolen base, and Medina went 3 for 3 with
singles. The Lady Miners looked to pick themselves up after the loss to Pusch Ridge with a visit to Superior on April 20 on a make up game. The ladies did just that with a 13 – 0 victory in seven innings of play. LeGrand was in the circle with Castro behind the plate. LeGrand faced 21 batters, striking out 13; LeGrand was one error away from having a perfect game. Defensively, the Lady Miners committed one error. Coach Brewer said, “We cannot continue to commit defensive errors, allowing opponents in the game. We have a better team than that. We play too tight at times and we just fall apart once we make an error. Our bats have quieted noticeably since the Hayden tournament as well. That means for the next couple of weeks, we will focus on our hitting. Defensively, we will continue to work every day, it’s a matter of playing with confidence. We make mistakes on routine plays. We definitely have to work on our mental game before state.” The Lady Miners went up to Oro Valley on Tuesday to take on the #1 ranked 2A team in the state, the Pusch Ridge Lady Lions in the final regular season game on April 26. San Manuel took the 4 – 2 loss in a very close game. The last time the ladies played the Lady Lions, Pusch Ridge took an early lead and never looked back. This time around the Lady Miners came out strong, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. When Brittney LeGrand got on base with a walk, Emmy Lou Clark and Jessica Castro were unable to move her, but Noelle Medina drilled one out of the park, scoring herself and LeGrand to take a 2 – 0
lead. After that, the Miner bats went silent, striking out eight times and walking five. LeGrand was the only other Miner to get a hit in the fifth inning. In the circle for the ladies was LeGrand with Castro catching. LeGrand faced 27 batters, allowing four hits, and collecting six strikeouts. Defensively the Lady Miners committed five errors. Offensively, LeGrand went 1 for 3 and went Medina 1 for 1, with a home run, two intentional walks, and two RBIs. Coach Brewer said, “We held them 2 - 0 until the sixth inning
when they rallied, getting a runner on with a Miner error. The next three batters got hits and scored on yet another defensive error.” San Manuel qualified for the 2A State Tournament as the #13 seed, they will be facing the #20 seed Miami on May 6 at 2 p.m. on field #4 at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix located at 9833 North 25th Avenue. The tournament is single elimination; if the Lady Miners win they will advance to play the #4 seed Willcox on March 7 at 9:30 a.m. on field #4. All games will be played at Rose Mofford.

Supervisors
Continued from Page 3 positions in the jail health program. This represents a 13 percent reduction in operating costs. The reductions to this department came after an examination of Yavapai County’s privately-run correctional health system. Adopting the “private contractor” staffing model used by Yavapai County will save vital county funds. The second budget reduction option presented to the Board involved a restructuring in Pinal County Development Services, cutting $1.5 million. The current economic crisis in the United States and Arizona has resulted in continued declines in development-related services. According to projections, revenues in this area are forecast to be flat for the next two to three years. The reductions in Development Services will impact personnel and services. Twenty positions will be eliminated in six departments. Development Services personnel will reduce staffing at the Oracle and Casa Grande satellite offices. Supervisor Snider added that he would like to see the county use technology when possible to serve people who may not have the time or ability to travel to Florence. The Board voted to implement the Development Services budget and staffing reductions. The third and final budget-related program ended in a 2-1 vote. It involved a proposal to reduce or eliminate a lease subsidy for county van pools. The van pool program began as part of a federal initiative to improve air quality and reduce traffic by encouraging large employers to reduce single vehicle commuters through employee trip reduction incentives. Currently, the county pays an amount equal to 50 percent a van pool lease. Leases vary based on the size and model of the van. Employees who
San Manuel Miner, San Manuel, Arizona belong to the van pool are responsible for the rest of the lease costs as well as fuel, cleaning and maintenance costs. After cutbacks in prior budget years, the county has 17 vans in operation with a county contribution totaling $125,000. After a vigorous discussion about the role of the van pools, the Supervisors approved a 25 percent cut in the subsidy. The next scheduled meeting for the Board of Supervisors is Wednesday, May 11, at 9:30 AM at the main county complex in Florence.

Mining Brief
By Lana Jones Copper prices have been on a general downward trend over the last three months but remain high compared to last year’s prices. July copper was trading at $4.26 Tuesday morning. Resolution Copper Resolution Copper announced that reclamation work is commencing on 39 acres of old tailings immediately north of Superior. Resolution plans to shape, cap, and seed the old tailings so they will blend in with their surroundings. The $3 million project is expected to take six months to complete. The company said it would take extra precautions to manage noise and dust because the site is close to homes. There will be some blasting north of Resolution’s water treatment plant to gather the material needed to cover the old tailings. Blasting will only occur between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Resolution also announced the release of their 2010 Sustainable Development report. It reports on the company’s social wellbeing, economic development, and environmental stewardship efforts. ASARCO A Tucson woman won a sexual harassment lawsuit against Asarco, the Arizona Daily Star reported last week. A federal jury awarded Angela Aguilar almost $870,000 in the case. The jury found that Asarco failed to stop the harassment even after Aguilar informed management. Aguilar worked at the Mission Mine in Sahuarita. The suit said that her supervisor asked her for sex and touched her inappropriately. The Associated Press reported that Asarco officials said the award was excessive and that they would seek to have it vacated. Curis Resources Curis Resources announced their plans for a small drilling program at the Florence Copper Project site. Curis plans to drill six to ten holes approximately 1,000 feet deep over the next two months. The core samples obtained will be used for engineering and technical studies in the planning of future operations. The holes will be cemented and sealed after the drill program is complete.
Update on Tucson “local” TV channels petition
By Marci Heath Chairman, Committee to Divide Pinal County At present, our quest seems to be at a standstill. We have received no replies from either satellite TV provider, DISH or DIRECT. They seem quite willing to work with the residents of SE Pinal County, to provide Tucson “local” channels, if the FCC will allow them to do so. Nielson Co. indicated that their Designated Marketing Areas (DMA) were not created for TV Broadcast coverage, and, that their designations were being used independently, by the FCC, for that purpose. They feel they have no reason to change their DMA’s. Senator John Kyl’s office forwarded our petitions to the FCC. However, the FCC has failed to respond to either the petitions, or, to our latest request for a status report on the disposition of the petitions. The committee has received an inquiry from Paul Gosar, member of District 1 US See Satellite, Page 10

Lady Miners capture Junior High Championship – third straight title By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior High Lady Miners captured the Junior High Championship to earn their third straight title in three years. The ladies finished with a perfect record of 10 – 0 this season and have accumulated a record of 27 – 3 dating from the 2009 season until present. San Manuel went up against Ray in the semi-finals and battled with Oracle’s Mountain Vista for the Championship. Coaches Ray Barney and Serapio Rodriguez led the Lady Miners into the semi-final game on April 30 Hayden against Ray where the ladies took down Ray 8 – 4. Ray scored a run in the top of the second inning
holding the 1 – 0 lead until the bottom of the third inning when San Manuel exploded for five runs to take a commanding lead at 5 – 1. The ladies scored another run in the fourth inning to add to the lead at 6 – 1. Ray would finally get back on the scoreboard when they pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth inning clawing at the lead 3 – 6. San Manuel answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to up the lead once again at 8 – 3. In Ray’s final at bats they were only able to produce one run as the Lady Miners held on for the lead and the game. The Lady Bearcats scored four runs on four hits; Lady Miners scored eight runs on eight hits.
Pitching for the ladies was Mireya Tamayo with Samantha Gaona catching. Tamayo recorded four strikeouts and walked one batter. Offensively, Lysette Campa went 2 for 3 with a run scored; Tamayo went 1 for 3 with a run scored; Ashley Vargas went 1 for 3 with a run scored; and Vivica Huerta went 2 for 2 with a run scored. Coach Barney said, “We had already faced Ray before and had to come from behind to win, so we knew this game wasn’t going to be easy. Jitters came early but we finally settled down and got it done.” The win advanced the ladies to the championship game to face the Lady Cougars from

Mountain Vista. The Lady Miners started out slow with the Cougars jumping out ahead scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2 – 0 lead. The Lady Cougars then added another two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead to 4 – 0; the Lady Miners answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut into the lead 2 – 4. In the fourth inning, Mountain Vista scored two more runs extending the lead to 6 – 2. San Manuel then rallied scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead at 8 – 6. The Lady Miners held the Lady Cougars scoreless in the fifth inning as the San Manuel scored four more runs to keep the lead and the championship 12 - 6. Mountain Vista scored six runs on 11 hits; San Manuel scored 12 runs on six hits. Tamayo did the pitching and Gaona did the catching. Tamayo struck out four batters and walked one. Offensively, Felicia Medina went 2 for 3 with two runs scored; Gaona went 2 for 4 with two runs scored; and Kadi Monfred went 1 for 4 with one run scored. Coach Barney said, “We started out flat, I don’t know if it was over confidence or that we had played the game before. Mountain Vista hit the ball well. I think their pitcher started to tire and we started being patient at the plate and we had timely hitting, that is what pulled this out. “Defensively, Felicia and Kadi were pretty vocal all season and at times they themselves told others where and how to play, and listen they did. “We have a great group of seventh graders, if they all come back, we should be in the race next year. Without a doubt though, we will miss a great group of eighth graders.”

Continued from Page 8 House of Representatives, as to what help his office might lend to our quest. We are currently working with his office on plans for a “town hall” meeting on the subject, here in the SE Pinal County area, and, any other matters which you, as his constituents, feel he needs to address in the US Congress. We will keep you informed as plans progress. The Committee to Divide Pinal County’s next effort, on behalf of the residents of SE Pinal County, will be to get legislation passed in Congress, to change the laws that govern the FCC’s actions, to force them to acknowledge our request. Some of these efforts may, undoubtedly, be addressed in the “town hall” meeting with Dr. Gosar, which is being planned for later, next month.
