Mammoth Police Report According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Activity listed from May 31 to June 6. June 1 Roy Clark, 59, was arrested at milepost 117 on Hwy. 77 and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was cited and released. Assault was reported in the 500 block of Hwy. 77. An arrest was made during an assist for another agency. Derek Palmer was cited and released for an unknown charge.

OBITUARY Virginia Mae Street (Glass) Virginia Mae Street went to the big ranch house in the sky on June 5, 2018. We know she was greeted there by her greatly missed husband of 58 years, Lowell (AKA “Red”), who no doubt, held down the fort until his “Ginny” could be with him again. Knowing her love of taking in strays, we are certain she was also greeted by every stray dog and cat that has ever passed away between Illinois and Arizona. The world is a lesser place with her absence, but forever enriched by the memory of this great lady’s quiet grace, gentle kindness and wicked sense of humor. Ginny loved a good practical joke & was never above being part of some great scheme or plot to gig anyone in the family. Barely reaching 4’10”, what she lacked in height, she made up for in personality. She believed in God, human kindness and ice cream at bedtime. She will be dearly missed by her two children, Michael Street and Patricia Beeks, six grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, if you ever pass an animal shelter, swing in and throw a couple of bucks at them and tell them it’s from “Lucy.” A visitation was held on Monday, June 11, 2018; followed by a Celebration of her Life at Ruggles- Wilcox Funeral Home, 517 Clay Street, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Yummy meals for kids at Mammoth-San Manuel Schools and many areas beyond Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, Diane Douglas, noted that the Summer Food Services Program (SFSP) has begun. “Many low-income families depend on the free and reduced meals that are served during the school year,” said Superintendent Douglas. “No child in Arizona should suffer from food insecurity just because school is out of session. That’s why the Summer Food Services Program is so important.” So far, 1,155 SFSP sites have been approved in the State of Arizona. This is an increase over last year’s total of 1,073. As with every summer, additional SFSP sites are added through the summer. Some of the sites are already opened, others will open soon. The sites will remain open through the first week in August. Last year, during the summer of 2017, more than 3.1 Million meals were served at SFSP sites in Arizona. With the increase in sites, it is anticipated that even more meals will be served. The majority of sites serve breakfast and lunch. Some also serve dinner and/or snacks. This program is free for all children ages birth through 18 yrs of age. Oracle plans old-fashioned July 4th celebration

Preparations are underway for Oracle’s first July 4th Celebration hosted by the Oracle Community Center. “We are planning a traditional celebration for our community, with plenty of activities for families,” said Carolyn Blair, one of the organizers.

The event features games for all ages and prizes too! Activities take place on Wednesday, July 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Included will be a bike parade and everyone is encouraged to decorate their bicycle with a patriotic theme, as well as

bike raffles, food and fun. Visitors will be treated to some old fashioned family fun in the form of gunny sack races, watermelon seed spitting contest, hula hoop contest , face painting and more. There will be hot dogs, chips, drinks. Everyone is invited! Admission is free

Supervisors adopt tentative budget/tax cut; primary property tax to drop from $3.6999 to $3.63 FLORENCE, AZ - Pinal County residents will see nearly a four cent drop in their primary property taxes after the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 2018/2019 fiscal year budget in Wednesday’s meeting. “I am pleased to see we are able to drop the tax rate,” stated Chairman Todd House. “It’s been an ultimate goal of mine since I have been on the Board

of Supervisors. There have been past circumstances that have made it hard to do, but we are at a good point now where we can offer this to our citizens.” The tentative budget, adopted in the meeting, is $451,709,402. “We have several future capital projects such as the new Justice Courts that need to be renovated or built,” said County Manager Greg Stanley. “This is why the overall budget has increased by

Truth in Taxation Hearing Notice of Tax Increase

In compliance with Section 48-254, Arizona Revised Statutes, Pinal County Flood Control District is notifying its property taxpayers of Pinal County Flood Control District’s intention to raise its secondary property taxes over last year’s level. Pinal County is proposing an increase in secondary property taxes of $100,971 or 3.11%.

In compliance with Section 48-254, Arizona Revised Statutes, Pinal County Library District is notifying its property taxpayers of Pinal County Library District’s intention to raise its secondary property taxes over last year’s level. Pinal County is proposing an increase in secondary property taxes of $55,130 or 2.55%.

For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Pinal County Flood Control District’s secondary property taxes on a $100,000 to be $16.93. Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $16.42.

For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Pinal County Library District’s secondary property taxes on a $100,000 to be $9.65. Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $9.41.

This proposed increase is exclusive of increased secondary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness.

Sea Lions win home opener over Eloy, Florence

The Sea Lions Swim Team hosted Eloy and Florence at the Mammoth Pool on Saturday for the first Home Meet of the season. The Sea Lions won the meet with 876 points, Eloy finished 2nd with 162 points, and Florence finished 3rd with 61 points. The outcome of the meet was never in doubt as the Sea Lions won 55 out of the 64 individual events and all 16 of the relays. Coaches were very happy with the 96 personal best times attained at the meet. Coach Alex Gort indicated, “Swimming faster than the other swimmers is fun, but the real measure of improvement is the number of personal best times. We had a lot of best times! ” Six Sea Lion Swimmers swam all the events and had personal best times in each one. Jocelyn Hudson (8), Jessica Rouse (10), Arianna Ervin (11), Martin Madrid (11), Mia Dale (13), and Robert Sanz-Anton (13) all swam every event in their age group and achieved best times. The following swimmers swam the maximum number of the events at the meet and won them all. Jocelyn Hudson (10), Cooper Dale (10), Joey Castellanos (12), Rianna Estrada (13), Evan

Apuron (14), Andres Valenzuela (16), and Darien Apuron (17) each won all the events they swam at the meet. Evan Apuron broke 4 team records at the meet, all in events that he previously held the team record. New records set by Evan were 1:07.50 in the 100 Breaststroke, 24.56 in the 50 Freestyle, 53.24 in the 100 freestyle, and 2:06.55 in the 200 Individual Medley (IM). Jessica Rouse was named Sea Lions Beast of the Week. She swam every event in her age group, and not only did she win every event, she also achieved a personal best time in each one. As a 10 year old, Jessica got bumped up to swim relays with the 11-12 Girls and both the Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay won. Jessica’s regular attendance and hard work in practice is putting her among the faster 9-10 Girls in the Central Arizona Swim League. The Sea Lions will host a meet against the Coolidge Dolphins at the Mammoth Pool on Saturday, June 16. If the meet last year is any indication (Sea Lions won 828-810), it is likely to be a close one. Arizona Girls State marks 71st session; Samantha Roan represents San Manuel High School It was a girl’s week with nearly 300 high school girls from across Arizona converging on the University of Arizona campus for the 71st session of The American Legion Auxiliary premier program, American Legion Auxiliary Arizona Girls State. This “unique” opportunity is open to girls completing their junior year of high school that meet the necessary qualifications. The session ran from June 1 through 9, 2018. Attending from the San Manuel High School was Samantha Roan. American Legion Auxiliary Arizona Girls State is a weeklong program designed to educate young women in the functions of their government and kindle the desire to actively participate in and responsibly fulfill their role as citizens. According to Penny Maklary, Girls State Director, “This is a week that shapes a lifetime.” She explained that girls were housed in an original home to Girls State for many years. State of the art, eco-friendly instructional classrooms throughout the university were assigned to the program this year. “Similar to past years,” she went on to say, “we have senior staff that work as city and county advisors, while junior counselors return from the previous year’s Girls State session, to assist Senior Staff in the

education (and fun) process.” Arizona Girls State is comprised of 12 cities and 4 counties. There are 22 to 24 girls in each city and about 75 girls in each county. The girls are divided into two pseudo political parties called federalists and nationalists. Precinct committeemen watch over all elections and assist political parties. Each city elected a mayor and counsel; wrote their own ordinances and resolutions, passed a budget and a strategy for planning and zoning. Cities were assigned to a County and the educational process continued with campaigning and election to County and State positions. During the span of the week, they conducted regular city and party meetings, wrote and debated bills, received instruction from actual elected state/county officials and “learned by doing”. Midweek, they elected the prominent positions of Governor and Secretary of State. The girls elected to these two positions, will return to preside over the 72nd session of Arizona Girls State. Culminating the week was the election of two delegates as senators to attend the prestigious Girls Nation held the following month in Washington, DC. Girls Nation is an allexpense-paid week with other girls elected State Senators from across the nation. They will debate federal issues

they present as bills, visit the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, the White House and other memorials in the nation’s capital. Another opportunity that is truly a “once in a lifetime experience”! On Friday June 8, 2018, a dedication and opening were held for the Kelvin Bridge Replacement Project by Pinal County officials. The bridge has been 20 years in the making. County officials and many of the people and organizations involved in the project were in attendance as well as people from the surrounding areas. Todd House, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for Pinal County, spoke about the upgrade of the bridge which the county sees as an opportunity to improve the economy and tourism for the area. The bridge spans the Gila River on the Florence-Kelvin Highway in the Kelvin-Riverside area. The road to Florence is now half-way paved and hopefully will be completely paved in the next few years. County Supervisor for District 1 Pete Rios talked about the history of the bridge and the project. He acknowledged many of the people involved in the project which included former county supervisor, Lionel Ruiz, Joe Ortiz,

ADOT, Grupo-ASARCO, and Copper Basin Railway. He spoke about Stephani Yesenski, who had inspired and helped unify the community through her courageous struggle with cancer. Stephani was a local girl residing in Riverside. Her aunt, Jackie Mann was in the audience and acknowledged by Rios. Following more speeches and the ribbon cutting ceremony, the first official car was allowed to cross the bridge. Jackie Mann and Stephani’s best friend Marcy Bryce-Mullin were chauffeured by L.S. “Jake” Jacobson, COO of Copper Basin Railway in his 1965 Mustang. Jake had been inspired by Stephani and had led fundraising campaigns for her medical treatment. In 2000, he named the bridge “The ‘Jake’ Jacobson Bridge of Unity in Memory of Stephani Yesenski”. He delivered the eulogy for Stephani at her funeral in 2000. She was 20 years old when she died. The historic bridge is now a footbridge that connects to the Arizona Trail. It was built in 1916 and is one of eight historic bridges in Pinal County that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
