Learning from children aids Copper Basin area resident in achieving academic goals
By Cindy Tracy When Kearny resident Patricia Joan Bingham received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University in May, 2011, it was not just a proud moment for the 47-yearold special education aide and her friends and family. The final walk across that stage to receive her diploma was actually the culmination of a 10-year journey of career awareness and personal growth. Her path was marked by scholastic milestones along the way as this working wife and mother dedicated herself to the pursuit of a goal to help children. Bingham began the journey in approximately 2001. She earned a paraprofessional certificate in the field of special education from Central Arizona College. Working in the Ray Unified School District in Kearny, she received encouragement from the department director, the students and her friends and family to think about continuing her
education and becoming a teacher. She was counseled to get an associate’s degree in elementary education first at CAC and then transfer to ASU. Because of ITV (interactive television education), she did not even have to change campuses when she attended ASU. Instead, she joined televised classes from the university using the ITV lab at Aravaipa. In 2011, she made the trek across the stage as the big board lit up with her name and the degree she had received. Academic success was a family affair for the Binghams this spring. Son Zachary graduated from CAC with an associate’s degree in pharmacy tech. “And then my youngest son Dustin just graduated from Ray High School,” she said. “And Tyler, my middle son, is going to be a senior at ASU.” Her nephew, T.J. Clark, also graduated from Ray High School this year. And were these younger students
in her family proud of her accomplishments? “Proud of me?” she reflected aloud, as if it had not occurred to her. “I believe so, yes.” She is currently in the process of getting her teacher certification and her aim is to teach special education. She said that the support she received by those who encouraged her to get the credentials to be a teacher formed a large part of why she did it. She also remembers reflecting back then that in the work she did as an aide, she was already doing much of what a teacher did. She felt she might as well advance financially in her field by getting the extra education. “I don’t want to make that a big issue,” she said of the finances, “because it is not all there is to it.” Working with the students was her main motivation. She wanted to get more education and learn how to be more effective in helping these youngsters reach their potential. Her opportunity came in the
form of a grant through CAC for those entering the field of special education. The grant paid for any classes she took that had to do with
special education or the special education degree. Her associate’s degree in elementary education was also paid for because it was counted
towards the bachelor’s degree at ASU. Everything was paid for, See Patti, Page 4

Tentative agreement reached with Asarco, Unions Tucson, AZ – Tucson based ASARCO LLC (ASARCO) President and COO Manuel Ramos announced today that the Company and the Unions representing employees at five Asarco operating facilities located in Arizona and Texas have reached tentative agreement on a labor contract that will be effective through June 2013. Property taxes along with sewer, garbage on the rise for the Town of Winkelman By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter During the Winkelman Town meeting, held Monday, June 13, it was decided that property taxes in the town along with the sewer and garbage rates would need to increase slightly. The sewer and garbage rate increases will be assessed depending on whether a residential or commercial account. The new rates will either
go into effect this coming October or the following January, as yet to be decided. There will a Truth in Taxation hearing on Tuesday, July 14, at the Town Hall concerning the raise in property taxes. The time has not been decided, however the information will be released online and in the print edition of the paper as soon as it is received. The Town of Winkelman is
proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $8,832.00 or 26.72% throughout the town. The increase will cause the primary property tax on a $100,000.00 home to increase from $467.59 to $592.49, an increase of $124.90. In recent weeks, both Pinal County and Gordon’s IGA have released dozens of residents from full time work. The Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition is reaching out to these and other unemployed and recently laid off workers with a free Resume Writing lab as well as an Interviewing Skills lab to help them re-enter the workplace. Each four-hour lab will provide participants with hands on learning; practical tools to help in the job search, and insights into the current employment landscape. This is also an
opportunity to review and refresh your resume for anyone in the market for work. The four-hour Resume Lab will be held Thursday, July 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Interviewing Skills lab will be the following Thursday, July 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both labs are hands-on sessions intended to provide each participant with knowledge and skills they can immediately put into action. Antonio ‘Tony’ U. Maes April 9, 1933 - June 13, 2011
Antonio “Tony” U. Maes, 78 of Kearny, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2011 in Gilbert, Arizona. Tony was born April 9, 1933 in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Leopoldo and Emilia Maes. Tony, a copper miner and avid hunter, was a loving-dedicated father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family at their many sports and academic events. One of his favorite pastimes was golfing locally with his buddies. Tony was a devout member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Parish of the Catholic Church. He is survived by his son, Ramon (Virginia) Maes of Kearny; daughters, Ernestine (Bob) Lorona of Winkelman, Mary Lou (Santos) Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas, Toni Ann (Gene) Aguirre of Kearny, Melissa (Ernie) Bracamonte of Chandler; brother, Frank (Sandy) Maes
of Surprise; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his wife Rachel Maes, infant son John Maes, daughter Gloria Herrera, father Leopoldo Maes, and mother Emilia Maes. The Rosary and Mass were held on Thursday, June 16, at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny. Interment at Fairview Cemetery in Superior. The family was assisted by Griffith Mortuary.

Sheriff Paul Babeu named ‘2011 National Sheriff of the Year’ Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was named the “2011 National Sheriff of the Year” by the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA). The award was presented Sunday, June 19, at the opening session of the NSA’s Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) established the Ferris E. Lucas award in 1995 to recognize an outstanding sheriff of the year for contributions made to improve the Office of Sheriff on the local, state, and national levels, and for involvement in the community above and beyond the responsibilities

Salvador Richard Santa Maria, “Richie Elvis”, 64, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011, at his home in Hayden. He was born in Hayden on May 18, 1947.
Richie was well known for his appreciation of Elvis Presley, and, “Love me Tender.” He enjoyed Michael Jackson, with the “Beat It!” tones, as well. Three sisters and two
brothers, survive: Lupe Carranzo, Antonia Romero and Mercedes (Manuel) Miranda, each of Hayden; Frank (Kim) Santa Maria of Sierra Vista and Jesus (Cecilia) Santa Maria Jr. of Hayden. There are also lots of nieces and nephews. On Friday, June 24, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a visitation is set for 9:30 a.m., with the Rosary recited at 10:30 a.m., and, the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Fr. Dale Branson at 11. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden. Griffith Mortuary assisted the family.

Since being elected as the Pinal County Sheriff, he has become one of the most progressive Sheriffs in the country. Sheriff Babeu has earned both statewide and national attention for his strong stance against illegal immigration. His stance and actions against those responsible for drug and human trafficking has earned him the distinction as one of “America’s Toughest Sheriffs on Illegal Immigration.” The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is the third largest in the state of Arizona with more than 700 employees. Under Sheriff Babeu’s direction, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has acquired both innovative equipment and technology through $7,000,000 in grant funding. Citizens of Pinal County used to have to wait up to 15 minutes for a deputy to respond, the response time has now been cut in half. Sheriff Babeu is a strong proponent of regional efforts to improve public safety. The approach has allowed all agencies within Pinal County to pool their resources and work together, saving money and improving service. Thanks to Sheriff Babeu, Pinal County now has a Regional SWAT, Traffic and Narcotics Task Force. Sheriff Babeu has also organized a “Citizens on Patrol” program and a “Citizen Alert Network” which has brought the community

He is also in his second term as the President of the Arizona Sheriff’s Association. Sheriff Babeu has become a national spokesman on border crimes, illegal immigration and the need to secure the U.S./ Mexico border. The Evolution of Understanding, Part Two: Review By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter Arizona School Board Policy SB 1308 requires that school boards review their current health curriculum and if it does not already include a definition of dating abuse, recognition of dating abuse warning signs, and characteristics of a healthy relationship, that they consider adding them to the curriculum. Additionally, the school boards are required to notify any local domestic violence organizations of the date and time of the public meeting at least two weeks prior. Under this law, the school board is required to conduct a public meeting, but they are not required to adopt any policy changes whatsoever; the law merely mandates a discussion and consideration of a dating abuse policy, but not the acceptance and approval of one. Any parent or guardian of a child under the age of 18 is allowed to submit a written request to the principal of the school their child is enrolled at, with this they will be permitted to review the dating abuse material within a reasonable amount of time following their request. Due to the advent of cell phones, smart phones, the internet, video games, mass media, et cetera, children have access to more sensitive information at a much younger age and at an age far below that which they have the correct ability/fully formed psyche to understand the information and consequences of utilizing it. The bill confirms that schools are readily able to handle the onslaught of information that their students now have access to. Additionally, it allows for students who may be experiencing new situations
Kearny Police Report According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. June 13 Enrique Martinez Aguirre Jr., 24 of San Manuel, was arrested for driving on a suspended/ revoked license, a license plate light violation and no proof of insurance. He was cited and released and the vehicle was towed for a mandatory 30-day impoundment. June 14 Michael Thomas Pfeiffer, 27 of Kearny, was arrested on a warrant out of Superior/ Kearny J.P. Court. He was transported to Florence and booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center. A fight was reported at Kearny Lake. June 15 After a non-injury accident, John Murrah, 78 of Kearny, was arrested for DUI/liquors combo and leaving the scene of an accident. June 19 Theft of a wooden bench was reported on the 400 block of Jamestown. Other calls included seven ambulance runs; two extra patrol requests; one found property report; one agency assist; four information reports; one family dispute; one harassment report; and two animal details other than dog bite. Citations issued included one for no mandatory insurance and failure to carry I.D. card; one for a license plate violation and no proof of insurance; one for speed; and one for failure to show insurance information. One warning for a license plate violation was written; and verbal warnings included one for improper license plate light; three for speed; one for a stop sign violation; one for a brake light violation; and one for a headlight violation. A repair order was also issued for a license plate light.
such as dating, friendships, the internet, be able to understand what is well within the bounds of normal and what is not. Just to be clear, following the public meeting and review of their current policy, if the school board feels they have an adequate curriculum, they do not have to adopt policy changes. Even if they school board does not have an adequate health curriculum and it is simply the mass opinion that their children do not need this additional education, the school board does not have to adopt any changes. It is simply required to review the current curriculum and consider the suggested changes. Schools that already had dating abuse as part of its curriculum were more than willing to add more. And schools that did not have dating abuse as part of the health curriculum were extensively reviewing its current curriculums and looking at the many options open to them for adding dating abuse into the health curriculum. Each appeared more than willing to update their curriculums so that their students had the appropriate information to help guide their decisions. So let’s look at why dating abuse should be included on the health curriculum. Not only does learning about dating abuse (in an age-appropriate manner) teach kids what to
look out for in their dating lives, it teaches younger children how to access if they are in a healthy friendship. In addition, it allows for abstinence/sex education to be reviewed and the importance of weighing the consequences of your decisions. When you consider that human beings, for the most part, learn through experience, some students may not adequately understand that there is a problem with something they are experiencing. If you were raised believing that life originated on Jupiter, cows and dairy products come from the moon, that our planet is indeed flat or that Chihuahuas are actually ancient Greek gods—however ridiculous these sound, if you were raised to believe that, if you had never been given an alternate understanding, how would you know that there is not oxygen on the moon so cows, and by proxy, dairy products just aren’t happening up there? So if Sally is new in her first relationship and relatively smitten with Jimmy, she may not understand that Jimmy texting her a record 156 times when she is hanging out with her friends for two hours is not normal. She may also not understand that Jimmy telling her that she needs to stop dressing nicely and stop talking to other guys, is really a sign of severe jealousy and
not a sign that he loves her. She might actually like this information. Alternately, it has been proven that the center of the brain which assesses risk does not fully develop until at least age 18, sometimes as late as 22; this would be why Europeans don’t drive until they are 18. At 16 years old, most kids aren’t calculating that whipping around a sharp corner at 75 miles an hour does not bode good things; in the same respect, they are not taking into consideration the consequences of having sex. What can result from sex? As adults we can easily say disease and pregnancy – just two consequences that will have devastating effects on a young person’s life. Now, there are scenarios where teen moms have extremely “understanding” parents who want to stay at home and care for their grandchild while their daughter graduates high school, goes off and parties and gets her degree in college, but happens like .000764% of the time. Would you risk it? How bad would it be if both these scenarios were the result of having sex before you could readily accept the responsibility of dealing with the consequences? Updating or incorporating Dating Abuse into the curriculum is just another means of giving the kids the correct information so that

Central Arizona College is gearing up for another semester of helping students earn their General Educational Development (GED) diploma at several locations throughout Pinal County this fall semester. GED classes will be divided into two eight-week periods and are currently provided at no cost for Arizona residents. The first session begins Aug. 15 with preregistration starting Aug. 1. The second session will begin the week of Oct. 10 or Oct. 18, depending on location, with preregistration starting Sept. 26. Students may preregister at any one of Central Arizona College’s 10 campuses or centers with proof of legal presence in the United States.

Continued from Page 1 including books. During that time from 2005 to the 2011 ASU graduation, Bingham first earned an associate’s degree at CAC. She finished that in 2009. “Then these last two years I had to go full-time college to ASU.” The working mother managed this by dint of the marvel of ITV (distance learning interactive television) at the Aravaipa CAC campus. Her classes were transmitted from the ASU Polytechnic Campus in southeastern Mesa to the CAC Signal Peak near Coolidge. From there, the sessions were transmitted to Aravaipa, where a lone Bingham joined her televised classmates “on the other side,” as she puts it. Smiling, she recalls that this method of attending class took some getting used to, but it worked out. “I attended the sessions, except I saw everybody on TV,” she said with a smile. “I was alone. I was the only one, yes, so some of the things were hard because there were a lot of times when you had to do activities with each other. Then we had to figure out how to do the activity with me because I was,” she laughed, “the outcast!” For the first year it was just the Signal Peak class and Bingham still alone at Aravaipa. There were only six or seven women at Signal Peak taking the courses. “So there were just us. It was a kind of cohort type of thing,” she said.
Copper Basin News, Hayden, Arizona But in the fall semester of the second year, the classes were bigger, up to 30 people with a lone Bingham still attending from Aravaipa. But she didn’t really mind. All the work was worth it when she donned cap and gown and went to the Wells Fargo Arena to walk across that stage with her name and degree up on the board in lights. She remembers thinking that graduation seemed to take forever. “We started at 1:30 and we were done by 4 o’clock,” she said. “The place was packed and it seemed like forever to even get to that point of going up on stage. I was nervous but I was very proud.” There are deeper reasons in our lives why we do things based on emotional, spiritual and philosophic issues, Bingham agrees. Back when she first started her academic journey, she said, “I was very scared because I had no idea what I was getting myself into.” But after Bingham started working with a certain student in her class, she had an “OH MY GOSH!” moment. She said this student taught her so much. She realized she needed to learn more so she could help these special students. “Because they have every right to have ‘capability,’ she said. “We just have to show them and educate them as much as we can so that they are able to be what they were meant to be or to get to the best of their capability. And in order to do that I felt like I needed to go back to school. This certain student, I felt, was the one who taught me that and

I knew that I needed to go on with that.” Bingham’s interest in her field has fueled the hard work and effort she has put in over these past years. She said that if you enjoy what you are doing in life the better off you are. “If you’re doing something that you don’t like to do, what’s the purpose?” she said. “Why have a job that you don’t enjoy doing.” She said the rewards for working with children, especially those with special needs are “overwhelming.” Anything these students accomplish is major. “It’s awesome to be a part of that,” she said. She urges anyone of any age to pursue their educational goals and never give up on them. “There are opportunities for everyone, not just students who are coming out of high school and going into college,” she said. This includes both college and vocational education. “There are plenty of opportunities out there,” she said. She said education changes people. It goes beyond being just a qualification or credential. She said it has changed her. “I think it has made me more aware, more outgoing, more ‘YES, I CAN DO THIS!’” That feeling helped to see her through, along with the support of her family, including her husband Zane. “I can remember staying up nights and having to finish something and crying my eyes out,” she said. But she learned perseverance and sticking to it and knowing that she was able to do something that she’d never thought she’d be able to do.

small hole in our bedroom wall, was tied to a tree limb that we put on the creekside slope of the dyke. During the night when that cowbell hit the bedroom wall, we jumped out of bed! A big flood hadn’t hit, but the creek had risen enough to cause some of the dyke dirt to slide down with the tree limb following! We had some laughs about that afterwards. There were three good-sized creek floods in 1978; on March 2, Nov. 24, and Dec. 18. The November flood was the result of warm rains on snow pack, and the December flood was of 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The Aravaipa road was again affected, with the bluff part of the road just upstream of the Jep and Peggy White property passable only by foot. Karl Pratt, a Pharmacist from San Manuel, and his wife, Delores, had become the owners of the across-the-creek part of the Hardin-Pohle Ranch that had the large two-story house on it, and when that December flood hit, those on the Pratt property walked that night across a narrow walking bridge over the flooding creek so they could get out of the canyon. Myrtle Pohle, who was recently widowed and living in her doublewide trailer home on the roadside part of the Hardin-Pohle Ranch, joined them after they crossed the creek bridge, and when they,

with Jep and Peggy Whites’ help, arrived at our downstream property they had to climb over the hill above the road to get to the road below because the creek had flooded into the road by our field. It was about 1979 when the brothers, John and Louis Gruel of Hobart, Indiana, became parttime residents of Aravaipa Creek. Those bachelors and ex-farmers were related to Ralph Miller’s wife, Beverly, and with the help of their bulldozer the Gruels moved a nice double-wide trailer home onto a hill on the Miller property that was across the creek from our property. One day when they were visiting us the creek started to rise, and despite our trying to get them to stay, they were determined to cross the creek in their pickup to get home. The Millers’ creek crossing is bad when the creek is higher than normal, so they decided to cross the creek from our field in an upstream direction. They were nearly across when they could go no further, so they climbed into the bed of the pickup as the front end of it was being covered with water. John, who was over 60 years old, got out of the pickup and made it to the other side of the creek, and as Cliff and I watched we felt that Louis, who was slightly crippled, would disappear with the pickup! was able to walk to their parked bulldozer, get it started, drive it to the creek’s edge, chain the pickup to the dozer, and pull it out of the creek. That was really frightening to watch! Cliff and a friend were walking along the creek one day when Cliff spotted a large patch of plants. He picked a leaf off of one, and although Cliff knew what the plants were, his friend didn’t. When they arrived at the creekside gate to our yard, they were met by a Pinal County Deputy and his wife who had just arrived to visit us. Cliff held the leaf out to the Deputy who immediately knew it was from a marijuana plant. Sometime later, two other Deputies showed up at our property before they had the chore of picking all those plants, then packing them through our yard to their vehicles. I remember worrying that some seeds or something may fall into our yard and marijuana plants might come up! Not only was there lots of traffic on the Aravaipa road, but some people would drive their vehicles through the creekbed from the downstream, unfenced Allotment lands to our property. We wondered how the numerous picnickers on the Allotment lands could enjoy themselves with all the noise, the shooting of guns, and the trash! We had counted hundreds of people there at one time, mostly on Easters. There was no Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Pinal County Sheriffs Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), who holds “In Trust” the Indian Allotment lands on the creek, as to giving the right for our Pinal County Sheriffs Office to take care of trouble on the Allotment lands. There was no management by BIA, and our
