Kearny man arrested for manslaughter in July 4th fight A Kearny family is mourning a family member as another family member stands accused of killing him during a fight. Kenneth Dickey, 47, was arrested July 5 at his residence in 500 block of Greenwich Road, Kearny. He’s been charged with manslaughter in the death of Steve Hatfield, 35. According to the Pinal

County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Tim Gaffney, on July 4, the two had been drinking alcohol and got into a verbal argument which escalated into a physical altercation. Both of their wives soon separated the two men and Hatfield went to leave in his vehicle. As Hatfield was preparing to

leave, the two men began to argue again from a distance and shortly thereafter got into another physical fight, this time in the street. According to witnesses, during the second physical fight, Dickey knocked Hatfield unconscious. The family dragged Hatfield into the garage and tried to wake him up. When they were

unsuccessful, they called for an ambulance. Hatfield was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Gaffney said an autopsy was conducted on Hatfield and that his death was ruled a homicide by “manual strangulation.” According to Gaffney, Dickey initially told Homicide Detectives that Hatfield had hit

him first and he acted in selfdefense. But he later admitted that the first physical fight had ended and the two had been separated when he re-engaged into the fight a second time. The Kearny Police Department handled the initial call but turned the case over to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office’s Homicide Detectives for investigation.

Hayden High School students get a ‘Jump’ on next year’s math

Microburst destroys mobile homes in Dudleyville

Though many more were involved in the program, Kiani Kame, Francisco Moreno, Enrique Gomez, Karicha Serrano and Lupita Calzadillas stuck it out to the bitter end with teacher Michael Hohl in the Jump Start math program held at Hayden High School this summer. (Mila Lira photo) By Mila Lira While most of the Copper Basin students were glad to be out of school for the summer, 20 Hayden Junior and Senior High School students spent their summer in the classroom. But not as a punishment for flunking. These kids are far from needing remedial math. This summer, thanks new a new math teacher on board with the District, students were able to attend summer classes to accelerate their math levels. Michael Hohl explained that in order for the students to get all the math they need for college in High School, the district needed to make some changes on how the math curriculum is offered. With the summer school class Jump Math, students are able to complete a course and be ready for the next level of

math during the upcoming school year. Traditionally Algebra is introduced in the freshman year of high school; then Geometry, Algebra II and by the senior year a student is able to take Pre-Calculus. With new programming and the implementation of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum, students will now be completing Algebra in the eighth grade allowing them to start Algebra II or Geometry their Freshman year. This will allow the students ample school time to complete PreCalculus and Calculus in High School. Many of the students in the class explained that they were glad to have the Summer Jump program to help them move ahead and it was better than staying home. The students met for 4-5 hours per day for more than a month. The

students explained that their future career ambitions will require the advanced math, some of the career paths these students are considering are in the medical and engineering fields. The students held their last day of class on July 6 and will return to school on Aug. 8, giving them a short but well-earned break before the school bell rings again. Hohl said that he puts a career emphasis on the students because they live in an area where engineering is needed to work in the mining industry and with the advanced math skills students have greater opportunity for higher paying jobs and career advancement. With these curriculum changes, he said, “the District has potential to develop a world class math program similar to those in private schools or the schools in larger districts.”

Co-op is great opportunity to live better and help others Editor, Copper Basin News: I have been participating in the Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op for over a year. They provide a basket of 50/50 seasonal fruit/ vegetables of high quality for only $16.50 every two weeks after the initial set up. They also have a variety of extras such as bread, tortillas and trail mix. I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of food provided although I sometimes have to look it up on the internet to see what I have. Lane closed on eastbound US 60 near Gold Canyon through end of July The paving project on US 60 between Siphon Draw, located near the end of the Superstition Mountain Freeway, and Florence Junction at State Route 79 is well underway. Motorists are reminded that one eastbound lane within a two-mile segment on US 60 will be closed continually until the end of the month for bridge deck resurfacing. Currently crews have closed the eastbound right lane between mileposts 205 and 207 while they are working on the bridge deck. Once resurfacing has been completed on the right lane, crews will then transition the lane closure to the eastbound left lane, again leaving one lane open until the end of July. What to expect during the closures: • Traffic on eastbound US 60 is reduced to one lane between mileposts 205 and 207 until the end of July. • Crews are working from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. • The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph through the eastbound US 60 construction zone. • Access to the Gold Canyon community, particularly at Kings Ranch Road, Mountainbrook Drive and Superstition Mountain Drive, will not be restricted. • Westbound lanes on US 60 will not be affected during the eastbound lane closures. • The lane closure will remain in place after work hours and during weekends. • Oversized loads of 12 feet wide or larger are prohibited in the open lane. • Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel. The bridge deck resurfacing is part of the 12-mile reconstruction project on US 60 between the Siphon Draw area and SR 79. The project began in late June and its anticipated completion is December 2011. The construction project schedule is subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, material availability and mechanical difficulties. For information regarding the transportation of oversized and/or overweight loads through the construction zone, please contact ADOT Commercial Permits at 602712-8851 or go to www.azdot. gov/mvd. Lester Warren celebrates 90th birthday Lester Warren, along with 120 friends and family, celebrated her 90th birthday at the General Kearny Inn. Lester was born in Porum, Oklahoma, in 1921. Her family moved to Peoria, Arizona, when she was 14. A few years later she married Art who was stationed at Luke Airbase. They had two boys in Glendale before moving to Ray in 1948, where two more boys were born. Attending the occasion

were: sons and daughters-inlaw, Norman (Myra), Wiley (Larna), Chuck (Joanne), Art (Darlene); nieces, Sharon Emerling of Phoenix, Janice Armstrong of Glendale and Sharla Jamison of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Nephew Steve Garner of San Antonio, Texas. Lester’s brother, Bill Garner, 92, came from Glendale and sister-in-law Lois Garner, 87, traveled from San Antonio for the occasion. Nine

grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren attended as well. Jim Celis, long time friend of Lester and her family, served as Master of Ceremonies. Some highlights of the party were: 22 great-grandchildren singing “Happy Birthday” and “You are My Sunshine”; Charlie Poarch sang “Okie from Muskogee” via recording; Myra Warren sang “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away”; Al Wade blended his vocal and guitar magic to croon some

of Lester’s favorite country melodies. Her sons spoke to the group about Mom’s consistent walk with Jesus, her Savior and the positive impact her abiding prayers had on the course of their lives. “I would like to thank all of my friends and family for helping me celebrate this occasion,” Lester said. “I thank the Lord for my wonderful Sons, their families and all of my great friends.”

Georgie Digs By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) The last week of September of 1983 brought lots of rain, a possible 12 to 16 inches in the higher country above Aravaipa Creek, which turned the creek into a destructive flood on Oct. 2. I will never forget the sound of that flood during the night from our new homesite on the hill above where I felt happy to be! No lives were lost, but the flood took out parts of the road, electric poles, and did extensive damage to properties along lower Aravaipa Creek, and the Aravaipa Creek bridge on Highway 77 was closed because structures caught in the flood had become caught under the bridge. Luckily, Cliff and I had a small generator, although it wouldn’t run much at a time, and our Citizens Band Radio (CB) came in handy then, and we were very fortunate to get our electricity and telephone service in sooner than those who lived further upstream. Of course, everyone was cautioned about their water wells. It was reported that the flood was of over 70,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), and that the creek had reached a height of at least 30 feet in the narrowest part of the Box. It was also reported that there had been at least one portapotty caught high up in a tree, and that those had been placed in the upper canyon for the hikers to the then-Primitive Area, which was closed for at least a month after the flood.

Pinal County’s reconstruction of the road’s flooded areas, which had begun by Oct. 6, was completed by Dec. 9, and after agencies became involved in flood damage repair, assistance came forth in the form of extensive dyke work on four different properties upstream of the Allotment lands. When the dyke work was being done in the early months of 1984, the Aravaipa road was traveled by huge haulage trucks, hauling huge boulders that had been blasted off of a bluff across the creek. A driver had to be careful about meeting one of those trucks because on certain areas of the road there was room for nothing else. The dyke work done on the Newtons’ property (our ex-property) was something to watch. After a dirt dyke was built up high, some sort of heavy material was spread along it, and the huge boulders were put on top. Those men did a really good job! In June of 1984, Pinal County crews were constructing a permanent route on the bluffs above one portion of the road that was still in the flood plain, although no stream crossings had previously been necessary. That was between the Ouillette and Geldmacher properties, opposite the across-the-creek Aravaipa Farms, and that new road on the bluff was finished in October of 1984. In 1983, I had taken a photography class at out local college, and the teacher was Pat Dolan of Oracle. I took lots of

pictures during the flood, of some of its damage, and some of the dyke work being done. I found black and white photography very interesting, and for a while I fixed up our laundry room, followed by one of the bathrooms, for developing pictures, but that was sort of inconvenient! The October 2, 1983 flood had also affected my husband’s brother, Fred Wood, and Fred’s wife, Alice, but not nearly as much as the sad loss of their 29 year old son, Martin, who we called Marty. Marty had been practicing periodontics (or periodontistry?) in Tucson, was married, and had two young sons, the youngest only one month old when Marty died in August of 1983 from a bacterial infection. There was a memorial service for Marty at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Tucson, with Reverend George Randall officiating, and many relatives and friends attended. Fred and Alice were still living on the Panorama Ranch headquarters, which at that time was part of the George Whittell Wildlife Preserve managed by Defenders O Wildlife (DOW), but they were in Tucson when the Aravaipa Creek flood hit. Because there was no electricity at the Panorama Ranch where it was impossible to drive to, the food in their freezer had spoiled, and as a favor to Fred and Alice, as soon as he could drive down the road, BLM Ranger Andy Wigg loaded all their spoiled food into his own pickup and saw to the proper

From the Wellness Center: Watery watermelon By Selma Williams Gila Community College Wellness Center Coordinator I hope you are having a good week, mine has been awesome so far. I have had several people ask me to do the watermelon article again since we are in full swing of watermelon season, so here it is. Watery watermelon you ask? Yes, watermelon is very watery, it is 92% water and the rest is packed with nutrients. Watermelon is an old fruit. It is a berry not a melon as I

always believed. Watermelon seeds were found in king Tut’s tomb. It seems watermelon originates from Southern Africa, making its way around the world through missionaries as well as traders. Russia and China are the leading growers of watermelon. Japan has come up with a square to grow them in so they are cubed shaped. The reasoning is square is easier to handle. I would really like to see and eat a “square” watermelon. In our house every summer, with the first watermelons

of the season in the stores, we will both go and search through the bin and see which one of us will pick the “good” one. It has been a challenge for us for years. With all our thumping, shaking, and sniffing, sometimes we do good, sometimes we don’t. Well the mystery is now gone. I found out how to tell a good one from the rest. When choosing a whole watermelon, look for one that is heavy for its size and has a smooth rind

For their new home, Fred and Alice had a new, double-wide manufactured home moved onto the highest part of one of the downstream properties they had previously bought, and where many improvements were made. CAC’s College for Kids lets young scientists experiment with alternate power sources

Lunch as science experiment ... Last week, students attending the Central Arizona College’s College for Kids program experimented with solar power. They converted pizza boxes to solar ovens and cooked their lunches inside the mini ovens. Of course, they had to document their progress in their notebooks. (John Hernandez photos)

“rind” pie, so even though it is not the healthiest way to eat it I thought I would throw this recipe out to you anyway because it is interesting. Watermelon Pie from about. com: Ingredients: •2 cups watermelon rind, peeled and chopped •1 cup granulated sugar •2 teaspoons all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1/4 teaspoon ground cloves •1/8 teaspoon salt •3 tablespoons cider vinegar •1/2 cup raisins •1/2 cup chopped pecans •pie pastry for 2-crust pie, homemade or purchased Preparation: Place watermelon rind in a small saucepan; add water to cover. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat; drain. Combine watermelon rind with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, vinegar, raisins, and pecans; stir to combine then set aside. Fit 1 pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Pour watermelon rind mixture into the pie crust. Top with remaining pie crust; fold edges under, and crimp all around the edge. Cut small slits in top crust. Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes or until golden, shielding edges of pie with strips of aluminum foil after 25 minutes to prevent excessive browning. Cool watermelon pie on a wire rack. If you make this let me know what you think. Until next time, WooHoo! Selma

Continued from Page 3 that is neither over shiny nor over dull. Looking on one side of the melon, it should have an area that is distinct in color from the rest of the rind, displaying a yellowish or creamy tone. This is the underbelly, the place that was resting on the ground during ripening. If the fruit does not have this marking it may have been harvested to early. Watermelon is very good for us to eat. This is good because I love to eat it. Watermelon has 876 UI of vitamin A, 12 mg of vitamin C, 4.6 mcg of folate, and 77 mg of omega 6 fatty acids. I figure most of us have a favorite way to eat watermelon. I did not realize you can eat the rind but you can pickle it, preserve it, and even make it into a salsa. I have never heard of watermelon

Continued from Page 4 Distributed through United Ways, the FamilyWize card lowers the cost of medicine by an average of 30 percent or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by the insurance plan. It’s easy. It’s just like a coupon you can keep using every time you need to fill a prescription. All you have to do is present a FamilyWize card at a local pharmacy to get the savings. These cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance. They can even be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare. The card is easy to use and it’s free! Call the United Way office at 520-836-0736 for more information on how to get a card. Or, go to www. FamilyWize.org to print a card, look up drug prices and obtain a list of participating pharmacies.
