RLV Camp allows Head on collision young men to discover sends three to UMC more about themselves
Royal Miller and the first week campers take a minute out of their busy camp day to pose for a photo. (John Hernandez photo) By John Hernandez The Rancho Linda Vista Oracle Arts Summer Camp for Boys started Tuesday, July 5. The camp activities focus on the lives of boys and explore the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of being a boy in the 21st century. This helps them to learn about themselves and feel better about who they are. The activities include daily swimming, swimming instruction, basic life saving skills, film and video projects, art, poetry, theater games and sports instruction. The martial art of Kempo Karate is also taught. Bicycle safety is included thanks to a donation of bike helmets from the Oracle Optimist Club and a grant from SaddleBrooke Community Outreach. There will also be field trips, hiking and a camping outing. Royal Miller runs the camp and every morning the kids have what they call “cross talk.” They talk about their lives and share experiences. The kids are taught about nutrition and having a healthy body. Nutritional snacks and lunch are served during the day. Royal and his volunteers teach the kids about ethics and dealing with bullies. “Bullying is out of control,” Royal said. “Kids are being bullied or harassed over the internet.” He talked about the hero project and what it means to be a hero. A hero, he explained, “is an ordinary person that
Traffic was stopped Friday at noon following a head on collision on Highway 77 near the entrance to SaddleBrooke Ranch. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer, the accident occurred at 11:55 a.m. involving a light gold car and a large white truck. One passenger in the sedan was taken by air to University Medical Center. Another passenger from the car was taken by ambulance to UMC. The driver was also transported by ground to UMC. All three were treated and released. The accident is still under investigation. (John Hernandez photos) This young camper proudly shows off his ‘Warrior Crest’. A Warrior Crest is an expression in art of what a kid feels is important to him and/or something he wants to change about himself. (John Hernandez photo) rises to do extraordinary things. Everybody can do it,” he said. Royal believes if they can instill confidence and the idea of heroic ideals in the kids, it is a counter to bullying. There are positive ways to stand up to a bully or speak out against bullying. They also teach the
kids that the older boys need to take care of the younger ones and be an example to them. They have boys as young as six attending the camp as well as other age groups. The kids enjoyed the first few days of the camp so much that they asked Royal to extend

Resolution Land Exchange Bill passes committee, heads to House Floor By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter On Wednesday, July 13, Arizona District 1 Congressman Paul Gosar’s major job legislation, H.R. 1904, known as the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2011, was passed by the full Natural Resources Committee, following a full committee mark up. This vote was the last step to be taken before the legislation will be discussed for vote by the full U.S. House of Representatives. “This bill means new jobs to Arizona and domestic copper to the country,” said Congressman Gosar. “Today’s full committee mark up brings Arizona’s First Congressional District one step closer to seeing this vital economic development project become a reality…I appreciate the support of my colleagues on the Natural Resources Committee, and I am optimistic this legislation will be taken
up by the full House of Representatives by the end of the year.” H.R. 1904 is legislation geared towards revitalizing the economy of Southeast Arizona and preserving and protecting Arizona’s natural treasures. Specific to Superior, the legislation authorizes a land exchange near the town, in the Oak Flats area, located in Pinal County; the land exchange would enable the opening up of the third largest undeveloped copper resource in the world to be mined by Resolution Copper Company. “This legislation initiates a long-awaited land exchange that will ultimately lead to nearly 3,700 new jobs, providing for $220 million in annual wages for my constituents,” Rep. Gosar continued. “The total economic impact of the project on the State of Arizona is estimated to be over $61.4 billion,
nearly $1 billion per year, and another $20 billion in federal, state, county and local tax revenue. In these tough fiscal times, this is exactly the type of legislation the United States Congress should be taking up expeditiously.” The resulting project, mined by Resolution Copper Company within the Rio Tinto group, will significantly contribute to U.S. mineral and energy independence, producing up to 25 percent of the current U.S. demand. The Gosar legislation is also a conservation bill. The land the federal government acquires in the exchange is highly-coveted recreational and conservation areas. Letter to the Editor:
Stop spreading rumors! Editor, San Manuel Miner: Guess it’s time to write another letter! This time it’s about people who spread gossip and rumors! Yes, we do have them here, as perfect as our little town is. After our Gordon’s closed, the next thing I heard was that now the Bank of the West and the Post Office were closing! Well, the first thing I felt was ‘Oh no. Don’t tell me. What’s next’? But then sanity took hold. Every town has a Post Office, else we wouldn’t get our mail. Our mail is important, and it’s vital to our community. Someone suggested we would have to go to Mammoth for our postal services. Hmmm....that didn’t seem right either. The bank, well you never know. So, I called the bank. The very sweet lady who answered, assured me that no question was dumb. So I ventured, ‘I heard a rumor that this bank is going to close. Is that true?’

Well, she quickly assured me that ‘No, it certainly is not, and you need to tell whoever started the rumor, to quit, period.’ She said they were going to get an article in the Miner. She said they had talked to the Post Office, and no, they weren’t closing either.
So, what’s my beef? It’s about people who try to scare others with their gossip. This kind of thing really scares older, poorer, sick people the most. They can’t get out of town as easily as the rest of us can. So, I say, don’t be cruel.
If you hear someone say something outlandish, ask if they’ve checked it out. If they haven’t, then check it out yourself before you spread it around. You might just save someone some anxiety. /s/ La Norma Raaum San Manuel

Check It Out: Plenty of books for young readers at the Oracle Public Library By Pauly Skiba What’s the best thing about summertime reading for kids? It’s carefree! You can read just about anything you want. No assigned books or topics. No book reports. You can take as long as you want to finish a book. Or decide not to finish it. You can tackle sports books, cuddle with animal stories, imagine new worlds, meet fictional characters as real as your best friends. Even better, there are tons of fresh, new books at the library, and kids can check out up to a dozen at a time for
two weeks. Beginners Books (for preschool beginning readers or for parents to read to kids), are up front and marked with red dots. About two thousand titles to choose from. Chapter Books (for elementary school kids) are in one section on the shelves marked with blue dots. Young Adult books (generally for eighth grade and up) are in the back of the library. Here’s where you’ll find a Harry Potter, or science adventure, or vampires. Don’t overlook the classics, like Red Badge of Courage or Jane Eyre.
Check out the DVD section, too. Who picks out all these books and keeps the selection up to date? Oracle Library, along with other public libraries in Pinal County and across the country, uses Junior Library Guild, a book review and collection development service whose goal is to help libraries acquire the best new children’s and young adult books. With nearly 15 percent of our library’s budget dedicated to children and young adult book acquisition, the Guild services assure these dollars
are wisely spent. There’s even more incentive to keep Oracle kids in the reading mood this summer. The summer Fun Reading Program, “One World, Many Stories,” welcomes children of all ages. Every time a youngster finishes a book, the title and youngster’s name will be posted on the library wall for everyone to see. On July 30, all postings will be gathered and a drawing will be held for a free family pizza party. In addition, all youngsters finishing five books about a child, town, or animal from

‘Crowbar Killer’ makes debut at Mountain Vista School By John Hernandez The premiere of the “Crowbar Killer” series was held Saturday Night in the Mountain Vista School cafeteria. The program was a benefit for the Community School’s Program. The final film of the evening was Walter’s Last Stand. It was filmed in New York,
California, Tucson and Oracle. The movie premiere included some of the cast in costume and a display of movie props. CHANecdote #5: Step By Step My Masterpiece Awaits! Dear Friends and Family, My week in Panagyurishte is coming to an end and I have just five weeks left in Bulgaria. Next week, I am going to visit my friend Diana in Sofia and become a Montessori Preschool Teacher for a week and I’m still praying about exactly what is going to happen in the weeks following that, until my orphanage relief team arrives on July 10. So, this evening I decided to battle an endless amount of steps to reach this monument that stands in the center of town and overlooks
the town of Panagyurishte like a beacon. As I trudged up to the monument step by endless step, the warm Bulgarian sun enveloping every essence of my being as I suddenly wished I had my “sea bands” handy, I recalled the last time I had reached the top of that hill. It was the evening before I was to finish my Peace Corps Service and say goodbye to Bulgaria . . . I sat at the top of all of those steps, out of breath and introspective. I was ready to return to my comfort zone . . . ready to once
again fall headfirst into the familiarity of shopping malls, department stores, English speakers, reality T.V., and hamburgers. Yet, as I looked out at the town I had grown to love displayed before me, I felt the sadness of leaving “home” all at the same time . . . leaving the memories, the adventures, the relationships I had built, and this “new familiar” that I had embraced for two years-not sure when, if ever, I would return. Yet, at that moment, I could not see the bigger picture that God had already painted for me, one little brush stroke at a time. Today, I heaved and hoed to the top of those steps once again, reaching the monument and collapsing into a puddle of salty sweat, unadulterated heat, and wiggly limbs. I gazed once again at the little town of Panagyurishte nestled into the green valley before me, and I thanked God for leading me back here for the fourth time now to walk in the plans He has for me in Bulgaria. From this perch, I could see every clay roof, every rolling green hill, every sunsoaked avenue and magical crevice. I remember when I first arrived in Bulgaria in 2001, my new home, and I knew without doubt that God was with me . . . even in Bulgaria. This week has been a week of reacquainting with the culture, refreshing the language, and pondering the greatness of God in everything that surrounds me. I have seen God in the colorful display of flowers and ripened fruits and vegetables, the rolling green hills and trees and the soft purple wildflowers as far as the eye can see, the comforting pounding of a refreshing Bulgarian rain, the sounding of the church bells resounding
throughout the center, the clip-clop of a horses hooves racing along the cobblestone streets, sweet red cherry juice dribbling down my chin, the smiles on the faces of a beautiful nation. I thank God for that picture that He is continuing to paint, brush stroke by glorious brush stroke, as I remember that He
comes before me, He walks with me, He guides each and every step. Step by endless step He’s with me . . . even in Bulgaria. Step by endless step He leads us, no matter where we go. Isn’t He amazing, this God who is painting our Masterpiece?!!? Love,
Chantel :-) Editor’s Note: Chantel has started a daily blog to document her time in Bulgaria. If you wish to read about her adventures, head over to this website: http:// chantelsloan.wordpress.com. Chantel teaches kindergarten at Oracle Ridge Elementary School in Oracle.

Interns from Resolution Copper in Superior toured the Lower San Pedro River Project site on Wednesday, July 13. Molly Hanson, Program Manager for the project guided the tour. Molly is with the Nature Conservancy which owns the land near Mammoth. They also toured the 7B Ranch area with Conservation Land Steward Celeste Andresen, Barbara Clark and Dan Wolgast all from The Nature Conservancy Arizona. (John Hernandez photo)
Resolution
Continued from Page 1 Mammoth area, acquired by the federal government via the bill, contains nearly seven miles of the lower San Pedro River, as well as more than 800 acres of ancient intact mesquite bosque representing what is probably the largest oldgrowth mesquite forest remaining in Arizona. While legislation concerning Oak Flats has been introduced by members in the past, today’s full committee mark up is the first time the legislation has advanced to the full House of Representatives. One amendment to Congressman Gosar’s original legislation was adopted during the Committee’s meeting. The amendment simply made a few necessary technical corrections to the bill language. The amendment was adopted by the committee as offered by Chairman Rob Bishop. The amendment made technical changes that made sure that staff was correctly
referencing updated maps, language was consistent and concise, and proper US Code was cited. It is not yet known when the bill will be presented to the House of Representatives, though it will likely be soon. Jon Cherry, Vice President of Resolution Copper, who had traveled to Washington, D.C. for each of the hearings concerning the bill, said:
“We’re pleased that the land exchange bill has passed through the markup stage in the House Natural Resource Committee and that it continues to make progress. We look forward to a House vote. We also look forward to its eventual passage

His strong finish in the 50 Freestyle secured the perfect day for Mikey - a great accomplishment at any meet, but to do it at the league championship is beastly. The Sea Lions Swim Team are done with competition in the Central Arizona Swim League for the season, but will swim several meets against Tucson area teams over the next couple of months. The next meet is on Wednesday night (6 p.m.) at the San Manuel Pool against Flying Fish Swim Team from Oro Valley.
