Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition seeks members for tourism committee
The Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) invites all tourism sector businesses, boutiques, restaurants, hotels, B&B’s, attractions, chambers of commerce and residents throughout the Copper Corridor and all areas in between to assist in developing a regional tourism committee/ stakeholders group. There will be two organizational meetings hosted throughout the corridor this month. The meetings are currently scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22, at the Dudleyville Community Center, 4004 North Dudleyville Road, and Monday, Aug. 29, at the Superior Senior Center, 360 Main Street. Both meetings will begin at 5 p.m. Additional meetings could be scheduled if there is a demand. These meetings are designed to help gather the necessary information and identify stakeholders to create a regional tourism strategy that will help to strengthen our local economies and also further the mission and vision of existing CCEDC projects such as the Ore Cart Trail, the Mobile Visitor Center and the Discover Copper Corridor tourism website that have been developed for regional tourism promotion. Local Girl Scouts receive awards

Approximately 395 Girl Scout fun patches, badges and incentive awards were given during the Investiture and Bridging Ceremony recently to the Copper Basin Unit Girl Scout Troops 1716 and 2717. Before the presentation of awards, the program started with the flag ceremony, performed by flag carrier, Annalecia Gonzales and flag guards, Marissa Baez and Jasmine De Los Reyes. Annalecia Gonzales, Lillian Steelman and Mia Steelman, who were not invested into Brownie Girl Scouts in prior ceremonies, participated in the
Investiture Ceremony. Participating in the Bridging Ceremonies was Daisy Girl Scout, Marissa Baez, bridged over to Brownies; while Annalecia Gonzales, Clarissa Gonzales, Mia Steelman and Starr Valenzuela bridged to Junior Girl Scouts. Not present for the bridging ceremonies were Shelby Anderson, Ahleah Arbizo, Danella Morales, Angelina Sanchez and Chevelle Serrano. Junior Girl Scouts helping Brownies bridge over to Juniors, were Mia Steelman,

field that caught the attention of the crowd. The Sheriff’s Department displayed multiple situations the K-9 units face and also the well-disciplined training of the K-9s. The PCSO showed the crowd how they locate drugs and how the unit subdues a suspected criminal. The main event of the night faced the Blazers against the Daring Deputies. The Blazers pulled out to an early lead 10-2 by the top of the third inning. The Daring Deputies came back with a fury scoring nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Blazers bats went silent with the help of the Deputies tough pitcher, only registering one run in that span. With the score tied 11-11, both teams agreed to go one more inning. The Blazers were up first and needed a little spark to get their bats back on track. With one runner on and one out, coach Hinojos came off the bench to help out, sending a shot to deep right field, with the help of base coach Angela Fuentes, for an in-the-park homerun. The Blazers scored two more runs to complete the inning 15-11 Blazers. The Deputies were going

Blazers softball still swinging, play in Best of the West tournament The Blazers Softball team traveled to Prescott July 22 to compete against ASA teams from around the state in the 16-under division. The Blazers faced a familiar team from Douglas, La Calentura. Annie Hinojos took the mound for the Blazers registering seven strikeouts and one walk while giving up five hits in a 2-5 loss. The second game for the Blazers was against the always tough Cats from Tucson. The Cats scattered 11 hits against the Blazers pitcher and defense. Annie Hinojos took the loss registering two strikeouts and two walks. While the Blazers mustered six hits of their own, the final score was 1-10. The third game of the tournament placed the Thunder of Mammoth against the Blazers. The Blazers pulled out to an early 4-1 lead sparked by an Alicia Romero pinch hit double, but could
not hold off the Thunder bats as they rallied at the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the lead 5-4 and never looking back finishing with a 5-8 win. Annie Hinojos was on the mound registering two strikeouts and one walk. The top five batters for the Blazers at the Best of the West were Angela Fuentes (.500), Letti Arguello (.400), Kyana Garcia (.444), Josette Kimmel (.375), and Annie Hinojos (300). The Blazers would like to thank all the sponsors that made this trip possible, giving these girls an opportunity to challenge themselves and improve their skills with each game they played. The Blazers returned home, Aug. 2, to face the PCSO Daring Deputies for the fourth annual Night Out in San Manuel. This event was sponsored by the Adelante Juntos Coalition, CopperTown Association, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and M-SM Community Schools.
The event was held in San Manuel as a night to stand against crime.

Frank Brock
September 6, 1948 - August 8, 2011 Frank Brock of Winkelman went to be with our Lord on August 8, 2011. Frank was born on September 6, 1948 in Wynne, Arkansas. He moved to Winkelman in 1984. Frank is survived by friend and companion Joyce Jonas and his children: Dustin Brock of Winkelman, Amanda Lord and her husband, Brandon of Winkelman, Jody Jonas and wife Kristine, of Lordsburg, New Mexico, Jose Jonas and wife, Megan of Fort Drum, New York, and Amber Jonas of Lordsburg, New Mexico; grandchildren, Chyrise, Dakota, Cody, Dylon, Cheyanne, Lilly, Jordon, Abigale, Anthony, Augustine, Mallory and Amber; brothers, Lowell Brock of Mesa and Chuck Herman of Deming, New Mexico and many nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Elgin Brock of Arkansas, Mary Brock of Iowa, and sister Mary Sue of Arkansas and grandnephew Dwight Brock Jr. of Mesa. Frank served in the United States Army. He worked in many of our National Forest and was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Brock on Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Winkelman Flats.

Paulina B. Romero passed away on Aug. 11, 2011 at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson with her family by her side. She was born Nov. 10, 1927 in Hayden to the late Lucas and Sara Baldenegro. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chano, son Chanito, brother Nicky Baldenegro and great-granddaughter Lydia “Kandi” Campos. She is survived by daughters, Polly, Lilly (Robert), Patty (Rick); sons, Raul (Yolanda) and Dickie (Viola); 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren; sisters, Hortencia (Joaquin), Cheri (Lalo); brothers, Rafael (Louisa) and Rudolfo (Piti); sister-in-law, Carmen; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Forever loving you Mom, Nana, and Sister. Services were held on Monday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Letter to the Editor: Supervisor Pete Rios should apologize to law enforcement Editor, Copper Basin News: Pinal County Supervisor Chairman Pete Rios was stopped for speeding by a Hayden Police Officer on August 2. His conduct with the officer and Chief of Police was not what anybody would expect from a citizen, never mind an elected official. Mr. Rios wrote an opinion column, in several newspapers, where he omitted key facts surrounding the event and portrayed himself as an innocent victim of police brutality and suggested the public should

Letter to the Editor: Babeu needs to look at his own house first Editor, Copper Basin News: People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Ed Barker of the Apache Junction News wrote an article this Monday, Aug. 8, about Paul Babeu’s photo radar escapade and one of his top officer’s multiple criminal speeding incidents. How did the Sheriff handle it? Part of Barker’s article goes as follows:
“You may remember this is the same Paul Babeu whose personal car was ticketed for speeding by PCSO photo radar back in 2008 when he was a Chandler police officer and before he became the sheriff. He told PCSO at the time that he didn’t know who was speeding in his car even though the driver in the photograph was a dead-ringer for his sister-in-law (the

But, one of the first things newly elected Sheriff Babeu did when taking office was to end photo radar in Pinal County (even though he now says there have been “many serious and fatal collisions”). “Then, in March of this year, Lt. Tami Villar of the PCSO was reportedly clocked by an Arizona State trooper at more than 100 miles per hour as she was passing cars on a two-lane road on her way home. Villar was driving an unmarked county vehicle and had her child in the car at the time. She identified herself as a PCSO employee and after conferring with his supervisor by radio, the DPS officer issued Villar a “warning” for speeding but did not record the rate of speed in the box provided on the warning. Perhaps he left it blank because a warning ticket for 100 miles per hour might look a little odd. Sheriff Babeu
handled the matter internally and nothing further came of it. “Babeu’s sister-in-law and certain of his employees may be able to get away with speeding, but you and I will be cited.” County personnel informs me that there was a dash camera in the DPS car recording the speeds of over 100 MPH. The recordings from the dash cam are available for public inspection. I was informed that these incidents of criminal speeding occurred at least three times and officer Villar was not in pursuit of anyone. Sheriff
Babue did nothing until the third criminal speeding incident and then only placed a warning letter in the officer’s file. Multiple criminal speeding incidents over 100 MPH; misuse of county vehicles; and child endangerment. All very serious violations of our state laws. Now, who really needs to explain his actions and his total disregard for public safety, and apologize to police, law enforcement and the general public? Lobos don the pads for scrimmage Thursday By Nolberto Waddell After a week of two-a-day conditioning drills that have caused many lunches to leave their bodies and tons of sweat on their garments, the Lobo football team finally got to put on the pads for the contact drills they will be needing for the upcoming season of football. With the pads on, the Lobos show good size on the young team. The coaching staff showed a little concern in the first couple of practices with the hitting taking place concerned about the lack of intensity from the players and the Lobo players not wanting to hit in the Lobo style. But things are coming around! In the last couple of practices the intensity level has gone up considerably and the Lobo coaches are starting to like what they see. The big dogs are starting to take the leadership but
the underclassmen are not backing down from the hard hitting. The coaches like it, they report that all the team members are sucking it up and are backing own from no one. The offensive team is starting to gel together but the work of the defensive team, the hard hitting and intensity they have shown will be a big factor in the upcoming season. And the intensity level will have o stay up there because their first contact against an opponent is fast approaching and the opposing teams they will be facing have plenty of experience in eight man football starting with the scrimmage this Thursday, Aug.19, at Pima High School. The scrimmage at Pima will be a three team affair with the Cougars of St. David High School taking on the Roughriders of Pima High School in the first twenty play session followed by the

trip into eight man football. The Lobos will than take on the Roughriders of Pima High School in a twenty play session. The Roughriders are no strangers to eight man football with plenty of
state playoff trophies in their showcase. In observing Lobo practices, the Lobo student-athletes should have a good showing in their first taste of eight man football. Their hitting
and spirit level have gone up considerably in the last few days of practice and hopefully will carry over into their play during the scrimmage against two very seasoned football teams.
By Nolberto Waddell The Lady Lobo studentathletes came together this week for the start of the volleyball season and the grueling week of conditioning drills. The volleyball team will be under the leadership of head coach Marissa Gallego and will be assisted by Salvador “Chava” Gallego, two coaches who are no strangers to the Lady Lobo volleyball program having coached the Lady Lobos in the past seasons. Coach Gallego greeted 15 Lady Lobo volleyball players and this group of Lady Lobo
student-athletes are very experienced led by six senior members with the rest of the team composed of juniors and sophomores who have played together the past years. For some reason, no freshman volleyball players have reported for practice but a couple have informed the coach that they are awaiting their required physicals. The team will be preparing for their first match of the season Thursday, Aug. 18, when the Lady Miners of San Manuel High School come to Lobo Gym
for a controlled scrimmage to start a long 16 game schedule with two tournaments also on the schedule. The Lady Lobo volleyball players will have to get ready quick because the first match of the schedule will be against their rivals, the Lady Bearcats. Gone from the Lady Lobo schedule will be matches against Pusch Ridge, San Tan Foothills and Coolidge but those teams will be replaced with matches against Fort Thomas and a new school starting their program, Imagine Prep. Also on the schedule will be their yearly trip to the Florence Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Sept. 17 and a trip to Pima High School on Oct. 1 for the always tough Roughrider Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Lobo team will be well equipped to handle the upcoming schedule with plenty of experienced volleyball players led by the six seniors on the team that have extensive playing time on the varsity level. The underclass group also are not lacking in experience with most of the student-athletes getting plenty of playing time last year. This Lady Lobo volleyball team should do quite well this season and with a little luck should return to the state playoffs again . So come out and support our young Lady Lobos and their quest for a return trip to the state tournament , a tournament they last went too two years ago under the direction of head coach Marissa Gallego.

Georgie Digs By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) There was always something to discuss (or cuss!) at the meetings of the Aravaipa Property Owners Association (APOA), such as what options were available for improving the Aravaipa road; what was taking place on certain lands; and the zoning of those lands because of rumors of development. In 1987, some members even became interested in developing an area plan for west-end Aravaipa Creek, although that project wasn’t welcome by all. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 greatly influenced what could be done along and in Aravaipa Creek which was considered to be an important refuge for native fish. Most members of APOA were surprised when they learned that there was the possibility of the creation of a native fish hatchery and public park on Aravaipa Creek property that the Nature Conservancy (TNC) had been gifted on December 31, 1987. It was reported that the gift included 41 acres and half of the water rights, and that it was hoped that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) would purchase an extra 79 acres, the other half of the water right, and cooperate with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) and Pinal County to create the native fish hatchery and public park on the property. Also, that TNC said they would help in creating the fish refugium and 120 acre recreational area, but if this didn’t take place within two years, TNC would sell what they were given. At an APOA meeting on March 6, 1988, Dan Campbell, State Director for TNC, talked about TNC’s role in Arizona, its gift of Aravaipa Creek property, and its plans in the near future to poison ponds in which exotic fish had been stocked. As for the proposed park plan, APOA members voiced their concerns of increased traffic, litter, and the environmental impact. This was shortly before the upstream George Whittel Wildlife Preserve, managed by the Defenders of Wildlife (DOW), was returned to TNC on May 19, 1988. A March 20, 1989 memorandum to all interested parties from Tom Collazo, Director of TNC’s Aravaipa Preserve, was in regard to a proposal to study construction of a fish barrier in Aravaipa Creek. That memorandum stated that TNC was currently evaluating ways it could help protect Aravaipa Creek’s native fish population; that FWS had recently issued Draft Recovery Plans for the endangered fish species; that a gift of land had resulted in TNC ownership of a .75 mile stretch of stream corridor; that a management easement had recently been signed which would present an opportunity to isolate exotic fish populations in three ponds; that because of TNC’s ownership of floodplain land below Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness (ACW), TNC was in a position to make available sites for construction of a barrier; and that TNC was willing to assist in the coordination of a cooperative agreement to design, fund, construct, and maintain a fish barrier and to help ensure the cooperation of other private landowners in west-end Aravaipa. Well, those other private land owners were not cooperative, especially after June of 1989 when the FWS was focusing on three different sites for fish barriers. Those sites were “Holy Joe”, on the Holy Joe Ranch; “School House”, downstream of the Barassi property; and “Brandenburg”, upstream of the Luebbermann property. Much more later!

INVITATION TO BID TOWN OF WINKELMAN Wastewater Treatment Plant 206 Giffin Ave., Winkelman AZ The Town of Winkelman hereinafter referred to as Town, through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Arizona State Department of Housing (ADOH) will accept bids from qualified firms or individuals with a minimum of an A contractor’s license as registered with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors to perform the following services: PROJECT DESCRIPTION This federally funded project consists of the repairing of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. OBJECTIVE/SCOPE OF WORK CONTRACTOR furnish, install and complete all work as specified or indicated in the contract documents. The work is generally described as follows: • Installation of a new 400 amp electrical service, cabinets and gear along with new receptacles and conduit to replace the existing electrical system of the wastewater treatment plant. Installation of a new back-up generator to support new electrical service. • Installation of new 3-inch ductile iron force main pipe from influent lift pumps to treatment plant aeration basins. • Installation of approximately 2500 square feet of sand filter sludge drying/percolation beds with 3 drying chambers, separated by solid grout reinforced retaining walls and lined with a waterproof membrane. • Installation of a new progressive cavity sludge pump and adjustable hosing to transfer sludge to drying beds. • Installation of a sump manhole and pump to return filtrate to treatment plant. Installation of an 6 foot chain link fence around the new generator and electrical equipment to improve site security, with vehicle and pedestrian gates. PROPOSALS To be considered, one (1) original and two (2) copies of the proposal must be provided and in accordance with the Instructions to Bidders included in the bid package. Sealed bids will be received at Winkelman Town Hall on September 26, 2011 at 1:00 PM at which time all bids received will be opened and the amount of the total bid and alternates read aloud. Failure of the proposer to complete all of the bid documents may result in rejection of the proposal. All bids should be identified as “Sealed Bid, Town of Winkelman Wastewater Treatment Plant”. A bid security in the form of a certified check, cashier’s check, or bid bond in the amount of 10% of the bid shall accompany each proposal. Bonding companies issuing acceptable bonds in conjunction with this project must hold a certification of authority to transact surety business in Arizona as issued by the Director of the Department of Insurance. All bid security shall be made payable, without condition, to the Town of Winkelman. Said bid security shall be considered liquidated damages and shall be forfeited to the Town of Winkelman in the event the proposal is accepted and the successful bidder fails to execute the CONTRACT and furnish the required bonds within ten (10) workings days after the notice of bid award. The Town will conduct a pre-bid conference and site inspection on September 12, 2011 at 1:00. Interested bidders should meet at the Winkelman Town Hall, 206 Giffin Ave., Winkelman AZ, which is accessible to persons with disabilities. Tarasiuk joins CVIT Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) Superintendent Pete Guzman announces that Beata Tarasiuk has joined the CVIT team. Tarasiuk will be responsible for recruitment and coordination of registration of students. Currently, CVIT offers local high school students career and technical education (CTE) training with their central programs (courses taught on the Gila Pueblo Campus) and CTE courses delivered in local high schools. “Ms. Tarasiuk brings to CVIT experience and a thorough understanding of the importance of CTE programs,” said Guzman. Tarasiuk, who holds an MBA, notes, “CVIT provides an extraordinary opportunity for our students to develop the skills needed or for entry into a highly competitive workforce. Even if a student plans on attending college, they will be better prepared to increase their earning power if they have skills, which will help them secure gainful employment in order to meet the financial commitment for earning a degree. “This is a very exciting time for CVIT because of the innovation and relevant programs offered throughout Gila Community College in our central programs.” Currently, CVIT offers Certified Nursing Assistant, Allied Health Care, Electrical Instrumentation, Renewal Sustainable Energy, and Fire Science as central programs in partnership with the Gila Community College. CVIT serves Globe, Miami, San Carlos, Hayden and Superior High Schools. Tarasiuk’s office is located on the Gila Pueblo Campus of Gila Community College.
