’m an Arizona native, and by the time I was twelve years old I had traveled through much of Arizona. My parents had a deep, abiding admiration for this state. When we took a driving trip, it was almost always on what are now the “back roads” of Arizona. But they were the main roads then, when it was not unusual to drive from Seligman through Prescott, Yarnell, and Wickenburg to get to Phoenix, which was then a bustling town. My sister and I knew Peach Springs, Ash Fork, Pine, Payson, Oatman, Gila Bend, Benson, Morenci, Yuma and Gisela. I spent part of each summer at my grandparents’ home in Sedona and watched the movie westerns being filmed. Once my parents fired up the blue Ford so we could drive through the brand-new tunnel in Queen Creek just a few days after it opened. I loved Arizona totally, from the San Francisco Peaks to the border station in Nogales, and I was privileged to twice see the beautiful Snake Dance of the Hopi people years before it was closed to the public. Each trip was historical and cultural, for my parents knew the events of the past and the richness of all Arizona’s peoples. Each place was special in its own way. So, what do we have to offer that makes the towns of the Copper Basin special? What do we think is the heart and core of where we live? I know that for many of us the answer is friends and family and a sense of community. But I’m looking for other special things. For example, when friends or relatives come to town, what do you like to show them and what do you like to do? Do you go out into the desert? Do you go someplace to eat? Where do the photographs get taken? More than that, if you only had a minute to tell a stranger about the town, what would you tell him or her that would make them want to visit? Kearny’s town library is a hopping place. Last year a bunch of volunteers gave it a new, brightly-colored exterior (based on the original mural painted by the late Abbie McDougall). New desert plants grace the front. The library is a “must visit” for hikers on the Arizona Trail, who make use of the free wi-fi connection to the outside world. The library is also a WorkForce connection site, with computers and software to assist people looking for work. More recently the old teen center building behind the library was cleaned up and brightly painted by people from ASARCO and other volunteers, and has served through the summer as the base station for the library’s summer youth and reading program. New Copper Communities website aims to connect local suppliers and contractors to industry A new website and business directory have been launched to support economic and business development in the Copper Corridor. The Copper Communities Supplier Source (http://ccsuppliersource.com/) is designed to promote and leverage local businesses in the Copper Communities region (including Superior, Miami, Globe, Claypool, Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman, San Carlos-Peridot, San Carlos-Bylas, Queen Valley, Mammoth, San Manuel, and Oracle). This website is intended to serve as a resource for local product and service providers within the Copper Communities of central Arizona, to connect contractors, vendors, and businesses in the region. The website is the result of a collaboration between the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition, Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation, Local First Arizona Foundation and Resolution Copper. “The Copper Corridor EDC is committed to supporting small businesses and diversifying our local economies. The Supplier Portal will

provide a much-needed opportunity for our local businesses to promote themselves as vendors to Resolution Copper and in the future other large businesses,” said Mila Besich-Lira, Executive Director of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. “Our board is pleased to have partnered with other organizations and industry to develop this tool for economic development in the Copper Corridor.” Any Arizona Business that meets the criteria below is eligible for a free listing in the Copper Communities Supplier Source Directory. Businesses will receive a designation based on geographic criteria to help larger companies identify local businesses and services within the region first, then within Arizona and the United States. Hayden routs Duncan in season opener, 38 – 8 By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Hayden football team completed one of its most successful seasons in recent memory, finishing 8 – 4 with a berth in the state playoffs in 2016. The Lobos continued to perform well in their season opener versus Duncan last Friday night, defeating the Wildkats, 38 – 8. Duncan scored its only points on an 80yard kickoff return to start the game, but it was all Lobos after that as they scored 38 unanswered points on the way to the lopsided victory. “They got away from us on the opening

kickoff,” Hayden head coach John Estrada told the Copper Basin News. “But we gained our composure after that. “We worked hard and have been for more than a month,” he added about his team’s performance in the opener. “We made a lot of mistakes but we just have to keep climbing that hill and keep getting better.” The Lobos tied the game on a Mario Mariscal five yard touchdown pass to Robert Bohrn and Joel Rodriguez’ twopoint PAT. Rodriguez later scored on a 35-yard touchdown run and converted his second PAT, giving the Lobos a 16 – 8 lead. Mariscal and Bohrn hooked up again,

this time on a 23-yard touchdown before Omar Lopez converted the two-point PAT, extending the lead to 24 – 8, where it remained as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime. “Mario threw some good passes,” Estrada said about his senior signal caller. Lopez scored one of two second half touchdowns for Hayden on a 30-yard run. Rodriguez tallied the other, his second of the game, on a 36-yard rush. Frankie Valencia converted the two-point PAT following Rodriguez’ touchdown. The Lobos’ defense was superb throughout, essentially posting a shutout as the Wildkats’ only touchdown came on special teams.

“Our team came to hit,” Estrada said. “By the third quarter Duncan felt the hits, it was real hesitant. It was unfortunate for (Duncan), they lost some key players from last season.” The Lobos travel to Williams this Friday. “If we continue to do our jobs and work hard we can be successful,” Estrada said, looking ahead to this week’s game. “We are going to have to stay composed, Williams was state runner-up last year. “They’re big and physical,” he continued. “They like to power the ball off of that unbalanced line that they run, and now they’re spreading teams out like Superior does. CASA of Gila County honors grandparent caregivers (Globe, Ariz.—Aug. 16, 2017) On Sept. 10, grandparents around the nation will be honored for all the love and support they give to children in their lives but the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program of Gila County would like to especially honor the grandparents in our community who’ve taken in grandchildren who were abused or neglected. In Arizona 44 percent of kids in foster care are living with kin, either a blood relative or an adult with whom the child has a significant relationship, according to a Department of Child Safety report. Many of these kinship care providers include

grandparents who’ve opened their homes to their grandchildren who have been abused or neglected. While the state does provide many services to kinship caregivers, especially those who get licensed through the state, many are taken by surprise and are unsure where they can turn for support. For the nearly 7,000 children in unlicensed kinship care placements the average monthly reimbursement is only $45.60. Court Appointed Special Advocates are every day community members who volunteer their time to be an advocate for children in the foster care system. When

appointed to a case of a kinship care provider CASA advocates are often able to connect them with the support and services they need to care for their children. The CASA Program works because CASA advocates are able to focus on one case at a time, while most paid professionals in the foster care system have caseloads that are difficult to manage. The CASA advocate visits the child monthly and reports back to the judge with what’s happening in the case and their recommendations for moving forward. The CASA advocate’s unique outsider perspective helps them effectively advocate for the best interests of the child.

Healthy Living with Chronic Pain Workshop offered in Superior Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens is hosting a free Healthy Living with Chronic Pain Workshop for people who have a diagnosis of chronic pain. Learn how to take control and manage your pain. Examples of chronic pain conditions are: chronic musculoskeletal pain of neck,

shoulders, back pain or etc.; Fibromyalgia; whiplash injuries; chronic regional pain syndromes; repetitive strain injury; chronic pelvic pain; post-surgical pain that lasts over six months; neuropathic pain (often caused by trauma); neuralgias (such as post-herpetic pain and trigeminal

neuralgia); and post stroke or central pain. This workshop will also benefit those who suffer from persistent headache, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, and multiple sclerosis. The workshop will be held on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. for six weeks,

Waco, TX - Deborah DeGraff has been named Elementary Teacher of the Year for the 2018 Region 12 Education Service Center for her work at Waco ISD’s Bell’s Hill Campus She was picked from 76 school districts across the region. Along with Belton ISD’s Craig Sullivan, the secondary teacher of the year, DeGraff will advance to the semifinals of the Texas Teacher of the Year judging in September. About winning the award, DeGraff said, “Am I a teacher that should be award winning? I can name you five right now that I feel like- they teach children to read. I do a really cool job with science, but, teaching a child to read and do number sense? That’s life-changing.” This humble teacher has just finished her fourth year at that campus, where she works with 800 students, Pre-K through 5th grade. Her focus is on hands-on lessons, which are geared toward helping students find meaning in science so that it becomes personally relevant to them. Her work also includes the creation of the Bell’s Hill Greenhouse, which serves as a living laboratory for students to learn

about plant life and an award-winning garden club for 4th and 5th graders, whom sell plants at the downtown Waco Farmer’s Market. Her students have earned Keep Waco Beautiful awards for four consecutive years for their creative recycling products.

Deborah is the oldest daughter of Gloria and Bill Stambaugh of Aravaipa. She is a graduate of Ray High School (Class of 1977), who then went on to pursue her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree at Baylor University in Waco.
