All burn permits issued by Pinal County, including agricultural, are invalid and void until further notice. • BEARCAT FAMILY PASS AVAILABLE Fall Family Passes are now in existence and available through the Ray High School Office, for the cost of $80. The pass will admit one family to all regular season home Bearcat games in Football and Volleyball. The third Saturday the club holds a practice shooting match, supervised by Ralph Munoz (363-7239) or Brian Young (363-9746). • KEARNY SENIOR CITIZENS The Kearny Senior Citizen’s group meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Constitution Hall. The group talks about trips to different places in Arizona as well as other subjects. A potluck dinner is held after the social hour. New members are needed. Come down and join the group. • ST. State unveils Arizona tax recovery program PHOENIX, AZ -- Arizona is launching a tax recovery program that will run from September 1 through October 1, 2011. The legislature included the proposal in the budget bill that was passed and signed by Governor Brewer on April 6, 2011. The proposal gives individuals and businesses the opportunity to file past due Arizona state tax returns with no civil penalties and a reduced amount of interest. The goal of this program is to offer relief and a fresh start to those taxpayers who, for whatever reason, underreported or failed to file their taxes. “Many times, taxpayers get behind in their taxes for reasons beyond their control.” Arizona
Department of Revenue Director John Greene explained, “This tax recovery program will give taxpayers who have fallen behind an opportunity to bring their accounts up to date.” Some individuals and businesses are not paying their fair share of taxes. These range from those who don’t realize they should be paying tax to those who deliberately underreport their taxes or refuse to file altogether. When taxpayers underreport or fail to file their taxes, it places an unfair burden on the honest taxpayers who are paying for the essential government services See Taxes, Page 14

Kearny Police Report Tribute
According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Aug. 24 An accident without injuries was reported in the
Gordon’s IGA parking lot. Theft of an ATV license plate was reported at the Rio Vista Trailer Park. Aug. 25 A credit card scam was reported on the 200 block of Essex. Other calls included four information reports; three found property reports; one civil problem report; one extra patrol request; one suspicious person/vehicle/ circumstance report; and one fire call report. Citations written included three for no proof of insurance. Three 72-hour removal notices were also issued.

Raymond T. Stern Dec. 20, 1916 – Aug. 22, 2011
Raymond T. Stern, 94, peacefully passed away on Aug. 22, 2011, as per his wishes at his home in Kearny, while under compassionate hospice care, with his wife and two of his children present. Ray was born with physical challenges and spent his childhood with his mother, Aimee, in Pennsylvania, attaining the rank of an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the two-
year work/study program at Kendall College near Chicago where he met Dorothy. He married his love, Dorothy Wiltse, on September 9, 1940. They worked and raised their family in Indiana, Tennessee and Florida. Ray and Dorothy were avid campers before moving to Kearny. Although Ray was an architectural draftsman by trade, he was jack-of-all-
trades and a handy man. He was involved with many building projects and enjoyed tinkering with all sorts of mechanical devices, bicycles and antique cars. He was an elder and a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. As a Christian man, he was always active in his communities. One could always count on him being generous to those in need. Ray is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 71
years, Dorothy Stern of Kearny; his son, Roger Stern of Kearny; son, David Stern of Boone, North Carolina; daughter, Linda Sorrell of Johnson City, Tennessee; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was a beloved husband and dad, plus affectionately known as “Grandpa” by many. The world is a better place because of him.

In addition to cars, motorcycles and vintage vehicles, there will be drawings for prizes every 15 minutes and the favorite “Muffler Rap” will be held in front of the Apache Gold Casino stage. John Leep and Troy Ramirez are currently available to answer your questions about the Car Show. Be sure to register your vehicles early in order to get a t-shirt, otherwise they will be available on a first come first sold basis. Other activities for Saturday will include children’s activities from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. which will include face painting, water games, crafts, Dance Party and the Good Shepherd Express. Nancy Hinojos and the Junior Chamber will provide lots of fun for kids. Chale Vega, Hayden Fire Chief, has offered a challenge to all Pinal and Gila Fire Departments and/or
medical teams to participate in the Annual Chili Cook Off. Kearny Fire Department has won the traveling trophy three years in a row. Who makes the best salsa in the area? The rules have changed again this year. Drop by the Chamber office for the new rules and categories. Hot dog contests are all the rage this year. If you are male or female between the ages of 7 and 107, you are eligible to enter. Early sign up is recommended and the event will start at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Apache Gold Casino Stage. As with all of our events T-shirts will be available through pre-sales only. If you want to purchase a T-shirt or buy an ad for the back of the shirt check with Angela at the Chamber office before Sept. 12. The Street Fair will begin at noon Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. and will stay open as long as they have customers. Movies will be shown Friday and Saturday after sundown (exact times to be published later) on Alden Road (hopefully, Cars 2 and Transformers will be the movies of choice). Prior to the showing of the movies a local musician will entertain the crowds gathered on Alden.
After school program scholarships available Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens announces scholarship funds are available to grandparent(s) or older individuals, 55 years of age or older, who are responsible for raising a relative child or children in their home. These scholarships will be granted for tuition to after school programs, weekend programs, sports programs, educational programs and can include
funds for materials and supplies for participation including travel and other expenses. Scholarships are being provided to offer the older adult caregivers respite and provide the children with the opportunity to participate in programs that may not be available to them because of budget constraints on the family. Georgie Digs ... By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) The history of the backroads that originated from west-end Aravaipa Creek is interesting. Although there are a few more than the ones I mention in this short story, I believe the earliest of all was the one that had been started with lots of pick and shovel work at the mouth of Brandenburg Wash at Aravaipa Creek, and led to Lawrence White’s stock raising homestead “the Basin” that was located not long after 1930 below Oak Springs at the base of Table Mountain. In 1948, my husband, Cliff Wood, had extended that road through a bluff with our KO Allis Chalmers Catapillar so we could drive to our upper range. That Basin road also became known as Oak Springs Canyon Road.
There is the road southwest of Brandenburg Mountain that led to the “Whitaker” that had been named for Les Whitaker who had run goats in that area and who had become a Gila County Deputy. After the Jo Fliegers had lived at Painted Cave and were living at the old Cooks Lake Ranch along the San Pedro River just north of the mouth of Aravaipa Creek, the Jo Fliegers had bought that Whitaker property from the Dave Millers circa 1950 and they had Rucker Equipment Company of Tucson extend that road to their Painted Cave range. When our Wood families still had our Panorama Ranch, Cliff had bulldozed a road up Whitewash Canyon, the mouth of which was not far upstream of our ranch homesites, but his work

ended at a bluff that had to be blasted. In 1964, we hired Gorden Wainwright to work on that bluff with his D8 Cat, but in order for him to do that job, he had to first “walk” his Cat to our upper range from the Basin road (aka Oak Springs Canyon Road), and then over our long range road that ended above that bluff that had to be blasted, and a Frank Montano helped on that job. That finished road was
really a big help to us. By 1990, one of the major concerns of the Aravaipa Property Owners Association (APOA) was a proposal in the Bureau Of Land Management (BLM) Draft Plan for the Safford District. That proposal stated that legal access will be required for public and administrative vehicular use across the three roads I just mentioned, and also across the road that led through the
ex-Arabian Ranch property along Aravaipa Creek. In 1989, Philip DeNormandie of Boston, Massachusetts had become the new owner of the Arabian Ranch properties which he renamed Trails End Ranch. Philip’s DeNormandie Company was categorized under Real Estate Developers. Fortunately, those roads were not legally opened for public use, but they sure were popular with hunters.

What you will find is a safe hang out spot for the students in the district that is a fully equipped technology play ground. Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Gregorich explained that he had become concerned for the students of the district because they lacked a safe place to hang out. With the two communities at least 70 miles away from any of the other entertainment activities kids enjoy such as bowling, movie theaters and malls he knew they needed to create something for them. Many students in the district also lack access to computers with high speed internet at home which limits their access to learning on the internet. With these combined concerns came the idea to create a place where local kids can enjoy some entertainment activities, have access to high speed internet and a safe place to hang out.

So the Cyber Café was developed. The Cyber Café opened on Nov. 4, 2010 after six months of planning and collaborating with several sponsoring partners. Students at the school were involved with selecting games and programs for the Café as well as helping to paint the hand drawn murals that were drawn by school employees Rose Rivera and Mike Smith Gregorich was excited to report that many of the behavior problems they were experiencing at the school have declined because the kids have a place they enjoy spending time at. The Cyber Café is open during the school days Monday – Thursday during the lunch period and after school from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Students can visit the Café to work on homework, socialize or take advantage of tutoring programs through the A+ system. He also explained that the students who are staying after school for credit recovery and tutoring have access to school bus service on the late bus; this does require a teacher’s permission, however. Superintendent Gregorich gave the Copper Basin
News a tour during the lunch hour on probably the hottest day of the 20112012 school year, making the Cyber Café a favorite place for the students to enjoy after their lunch in the cafeteria. The Cyber Café at Hayden High School includes two rooms that are decorated and designed for students in grades 4-12. Students who are in the 1-3 grade may also visit the Cyber Café as long as they have a parent present. In the first room there are several recreational games including a foosball table (a favorite with the students), a basketball shooting game, a pool table, air hockey and several video gaming systems hooked up to flat screen televisions. The
second room is home to 20 computers that are equipped with educational software and high-speed internet. The rooms also include couches and tables with stools for students to visit during their visit to the Cyber Café. During the tour of the Cyber Café students were all occupied – playing games on the computers, foosball, air hockey and basketball shoot out games – and while the noise levels do get a little loud all the students seemed to have something to do or were taking a break visiting on the couches. The students all agreed that they really liked having the Cyber Café available to them. The high school See Cafe, Page 14

Arboretum announces September hours; plans drum circle and ‘Scorp-a-looza’ Mesa drum-maker Cindy Green was surprised earlier this summer when 25 drummers and an audience twice that size attended a Wednesday night drum circle marking the Summer Solstice at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. She’s guessing turnout will be even better for Saturday night’s drum circle Sept. 3, an evening with extended hours at the Arboretum on a day that includes visiting lecturers teaching visitors about scorpions, arachnids and solifuges in the lecture room from 4-6 p.m., the drum circle from 6-8 p.m., and a black-light scorpion walk around the Arboretum grounds after 8 p.m. Events are included with regular daily admission of $9 for adults, $4.50 for ages 5-12. On Sept. 1 The Arboretum returns to the Fall/Winter schedule of daily hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., staying open late on Sept. 3 for the evening events. Kari McWest, visiting from Texas, helped arrange the afternoon lecture/ slideshow presentation with special guest speakers from 4-6 p.m. Speakers Alex Zuniga, Tom Anton, Jillan Cowles and Warren Savary will present lectures ranging from
scorpions and their stings to tarantulas and other arachnids (amblypygids, schizomids and rare spiders). Green Valley resident Savary specializes in solifuges, also known as wind-spiders, windscorpions, sun-spiders; they most recently gained famed as “camel spiders” due to photos from the Persian Gulf that were widely circulated on the internet. Savary has
collected and studied arachnids throughout the southwestern United States and Mexico since the early 1970s, amassing a number of distribution records and new species in the process. Lobos defeat Ft. Thomas in first eight-man game By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden High School Lobo football team took the field for their first eight man football game last Friday against a big and physical Ft. Thomas Apache team that was ranked number six by the Arizona Republic newspaper and what a physical game it turned out to be. So much for this game being touted as an offensive game! There were no offensive touchdowns scored by either team with the only scores of the game produced by the hard hitting Lobo defense, a defense that held the big Apache offensive team scoreless in the Lobos’ 10 to 0 opening season win. The Lobos had many scoring opportunities go by the way side suffering three pass interceptions and two lost fumbles all within the 10 yard line. The Apache offense had a hard time moving the football against the Lobo defense also seeing a scoring opportunity end with an Eric Rivera interception in the end zone and also lost two fumbles. The Apaches won the
coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Lobos took the opening kick-off covering the squib kick at the 35 yard line. The Lobos started a drive that was soon stopped by the first Apache interception and returned to the Lobo side of the field at the 45 yard line. After a run for one yard and a long 22 yard pass completion, the Apaches had a first down at the Lobo 21 yard line. The scoring threat was soon stopped on a hard hit by the Lobo’s Adrian Ochoa forcing a fumble that was recovered by Rodney Ortiz at the 10 yard line. The Lobos soon lost the football again fumbling it away to the Apaches at the 21 yard line giving them another scoring opportunity. After getting to the 15 yard line, two illegal receiver penalties pushed the Apaches back to the 35 yard line. On a fourth down play the Apache quarterback dropped back to pass and finding no open receiver took off on an 18 yard run for a first down at the 12 yard line. After two running plays, the Apaches tried a pass into the end zone but Eric Rivera got in front

for the interception. The touchback gave the Lobos the ball at the 20 yard line. The Apache defense stopped the Lobos forcing a punt as the first quarter was coming to an end with the score 0 to 0. The Apaches were pinned under the shadow of their goalpost due to a penalty on the punt return and they too had to punt the football with Hayden taking over at the 44 yard line. Three long Lobo runs and a 16 yard pass completion to Roman Padilla had the Lobos at the Apache 15 yard line. On the next play, a Lobo pass was picked off and after a fumble, the Apaches picked up the football and took off on a 90 yard return for a score but an inadvertent whistle nullified the score bring the football back to the 10 yard line where the fumble was recovered. The Apache offense controlled the football on a long drive that was stopped when the Apaches ran out of downs at the Hayden 20 yard line. The first half came to an end with the score still 0 to 0. The Apaches took the second half kick-off and
started a drive that was stopped by another hard hit by Adrian Ochoa forcing another fumble that was recovered by Roman Padilla returning the football to the Ft. Thomas 42 yard line. Two penalties stopped the Lobo drive forcing a punt. Ft. Thomas could not move the football also punting the football away. Eric Rivera took the punt at the Apache 26 yard line and returned it 22 yards to the Ft. Thomas 48 yard line. The Lobos drove down to the 12 yard line and again let a scoring opportunity get away when the Apaches intercepted a Cabrera pass at the 2 yard line. The Apaches tried to run the football out of the end zone but another hard Lobo tackle forced the football loose and an alert Roman Padilla pounced on it for the Lobo touchdown. Thomas Cabrera sneaked the ball over the goal line for the two points and an 8 to 0 Lobo lead with 50 seconds left on the third period clock. An on-side kick by the Lobos and two unsuccessful plays by the Apaches ended the third period of play with the Lobos leading 8 to 0.

The fourth quarter started with a Ft. Thomas punt and the Lobos taking over at the Apache 49 yard line. The Lobo offense was on the move again getting to the 11 yard line and a first down. After an eight yard gain by Rivera, the Lobos again fumbled the football with Ft. Thomas recovering at the 3 yard line. The Apaches were stopped for no gain and on the next play, the Apache quarterback dropped back to pass only to be greeted by a hard charging Thomas Cabrera for a safety and two points to give the Lobos a 10 to 0 lead with 7:29 left in the final quarter. The Lobos took the free kick and were driving again only to shoot themselves in the leg again with a fumble on a fourth down play. A fired up Lobo defense would not allow the Apaches to move forcing another punt from deep in their territory. The Lobos took the football and ran the clock down to celebrate their season opening win over the highly regarded Ft. Thomas Apache football team. Although it did not turn out to be an offensive dominating game, the teams played tough all the way. The Lobos had several scoring opportunities turned away on three interceptions and two fumbles but the Apaches also suffered from miscues. The Lobo defense played tough holding the big and physical Apache offense to only 158 total offensive yards on 41 plays from scrimmage. The Apaches had 71 rushing yards on 27 running plays and added 87 yards on seven completions on fourteen pass attempts. The entire Lobo defense played tough led by Thomas Cabrera with nine tackles and the safety. Roman Padilla also turned in an excellent defensive game with nine tackles, a pass deflect and recovered a fumble in the end zone for the only touchdown of the game. Adrian Ochoa
was credited with eight tackles and two forced fumbles. Eric Rivera had four tackles, a pass deflect and one interception with Rodney Ortiz also getting four tackles and recovering a fumble. Dylin Smith had six tackles; Robert Sandoval had four tackles and Francisco Moreno also getting four tackles. Gabriel Encinas had one tackle forcing a fumble. The Lobo offense, which kept shooting themselves in the leg with interceptions and fumbles, had a total offense production of 273 yards on 57 plays. Fifty rushes produced 256 yards but suffered three fumbles losing two. Two pass completions in seven attempts produced 17 yards but three pass interceptions stopped three scoring opportunities. Lobo quarterback Thomas Cabrera completed two passes for 17 yards with Roman Padilla getting one reception for 16 yards and Adrian Ochoa getting one pass for one yard. Thomas Cabrera rushed nine times for 55 yards. Aaron Lagunas showed the coaches that he can run with the football gaining 48 yards on ten carries. The hard running of Adrian Ochoa produced 67 yards on 16 carries but he suffered three fumbles, losing two. Eric Rivera led the Lobo runners gaining 86 yards on 15 carries. It was a great win for the young men in blue and white. It was hard fought and physical and they did not back down from the bigger Apache team. Congratulations to the young men and their coaches, but now it is time to get ready for another experienced and well coached team, the Wildkats of Duncan High School, who are also highly ranked, come to Lalo A. Serrano Stadium this Friday for a 7 p.m. kick-off. Come out and support the Lobos; they look to be an exciting and hard hitting football team.

The Panthers scored again on a long pass and led at the end of the first quarter 14 - 6. A short pass was thrown to Mario Padilla. He caught the ball, broke two tackles and ran 74 yards for a touchdown. Superior would score again
a short while later after intercepting a Bearcat pass. The final score of the game was Superior 36 Ray 13. The loss meant the rivalry Copper Helmet is now in the hands of the Superior Panthers. The young Bearcats
team played the more experienced and athletic Superior team evenly for the first three quarters. This team will get better as the season progresses and they gain more experience. The Ray Bearcats host Mogollon this Friday at 7 p.m.
History of the Copper Helmet By Mila Lira One of the key identifiers in any small town across America is their love for high school athletics and school spirit. Schools are often the place where the whole community rallies around no matter your age. There are often great rivalries between neighboring communities. These rivalries create mostly friendly competition for these small towns. The Copper Corridor communities of Superior and Kearny (Ray) are no strangers to supporting their home teams and they both have an ongoing rivalry for the famed Copper Helmet trophy. Since the 1960s Ray Bearcats have been playing football against the Superior Panthers for the Copper Helmet. Each year the winning team gets to keep the trophy until the next game the following season where the losing team can potentially win it back for their team. This was a yearly tradition for the two schools until 2006 when Superior moved to 1A eight-man football. See Helmet, Page 12

Lady Lobos scrimmage with San Manuel By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lady Lobo volleyball team had their unofficial opening of their season when they took on the Lady Miners of San Manuel High School in a controlled scrimmage. The scrimmage took place at Lobo Gym and consisted of five 15-minute sessions of play. The Lady Lobo varsity rotation came out and played the Lady Miners strong. There was no score kept but the Lady Lobo offense seemed to have produced a few more points than their opponents. The Lady Lobos have several returning players from last year and should produce a
good season from their 16game schedule. The Lady Lobos looked like they outscored the Lady Miners but a lot of work is still to be done by the Lobo coaches to get ready for the season that starts this coming Tuesday. The serving was not as accurate as the coaches would like and too many of their spike opportunities went out of bounds or into the net. Hard work at practice, though, should improve these areas to go along with their good team movement on the court and their defense. The Lady Lobos had to make their improvements quick because the start of their official season was
Tuesday, Aug. 30, with a tough assignment against rivals the Lady Bearcats of Ray and is followed by another tough match on Thursday, Sept. 1. The Lady Braves of San Carlos High School will be in Lobo Gym on Thursday and they too will be a tough assignment. Scores in the Hayden-Ray match were unavailable at press time. Come out and support the young ladies wearing the blue and white as they start their quest for a return trip to the state playoffs. Volleyball action will start at 5 p.m. with the JV teams on the court first with the varsity contest starting after the JV match.
Special grandparents raising grandchildren conference offered A special day conference has been scheduled for grandparents raising grandchildren on Friday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Casa Grande. The conference is free and being hosted by Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens and Pinal Gila Community Child Services, Inc. It is open to Pinal and Gila counties’ grandparents, older relatives or non-relatives (55 years or older) who have primary responsibility for raising children (infant to 18 years) in their home due to their parents absence or loss. The goal of this exciting and educational conference is to provide practical information and support resources to older adults raising grandchildren (kinship care) that relate to issues of child growth development, guidance, and legal services. It is the sponsors hope that these older adult caregivers will be able to increase their understanding of the issues they face daily and increase their awareness and approach in caring for the children for which they are now responsible.
Conference speakers will also be able to respond to concerns relevant to substance abuse, parent incarceration, and common behavioral health and emotional issues caused by separation from their biological parents. Information will be provided in both English and Spanish. Non-profit community agencies will also be present to provide information on possible resources for families
to get help and advice. Special arrangements and assistance with child care and transportation will be provided on the day of the event if needed. Gregorich explained that during the school hours students do not have access to social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter but after school the online filter allows students to access social media sites if they are members of those sites. The filters are still kept at a very high level which keeps the students off of sites not appropriate for students. He also explained that students and parents are required to sign an internet safety form that explains what students can and cannot access on the internet as school and in the Cyber Cafe. Future plans for the Cyber Café include hosting parenting classes at the Café and completing the outdoor seating area which will create an outdoor space for eating and other
