Donations sought for Chamber’s ‘Back to School’ drive – Do it for the kids! By Taylor Sheaffer Ritter The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce is working full force on a back-to-school drive to support many of the children in the area who are heading back to school soon. Remember the excitement of gathering up supplies to stuff in your backpack for that first day of school…all those pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, tablets, etc. Remember organizing them to make sure they were all there, that you had everything you needed, sort of like organizing yourself for the excellent year ahead? Here is an outstanding opportunity to help a local child have that same experience. The Copper Basin Chamber is collecting school supplies such as pencils, crayons, paper, pens, markers, calculators, folders, and more to give to children in need. Beyond these simple supplies, the chamber is additionally seeking donation of any gently used back packs, lunch bags and jackets or hoodies. All of these gracious contributions will be given to families in need of assistance for

their children. Starting on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Pinal County Administration Building Lobby (Kearny Courthouse), families can come in and pick-up school supplies for their children. The supplies will be available through the Chamber office until they run out. “We ask that the parents provide the school list from teachers so that we make sure each child gets what they need. Supplies will be offered on a first come basis since we have no control on how much we will have to provide to the public,” explained Angela HillanRamirez, Director of the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce. It is due to the unknown element of families in need that Copper Basin Chamber is asking for the community’s help with this drive. Please come out and support those in need, having the tools to aspire in school will help these children soar to better heights and achieve more than they could have possibly imagined. Donations to the drive will be accepted at See Supplies, Page 4

A table of supplies is still not enough. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce is seeking more donations for their ‘Back to School’ Supply Drive. (Submitted photo)

Nature Conservancy: Restoring river and land

Nature Conservancy Lower San Pedro River Manager Molly Hanson stands in front of one of the large tractors used in the restoration of the former H & E Land and Cattle Company. (John Hernandez photo)

By John Hernandez The San Pedro River has been a vital riparian corridor for both people and wildlife in the southwest for thousands of years. The river originates near Cananea, Sonora Mexico and flows north through Arizona to Hayden-Winkelman where it meets the Gila River. It is one of the last major, free flowing undammed rivers in the southwest United States. It hosts two thirds of the bird diversity in the United States including 100 species of breeding birds and 300 species of migrating birds. There are 80 species of mammals including the jaguar and ocelot and more than 60 species of reptiles and amphibians that reside and pass through the river basin. It is an area of ecological importance. Over the years mining, ranching, farming and encroaching urban areas have had a significant impact on the river’s ecosystem. The pumping of ground water has

depleted both ground water and surface water flows. In some areas this has led to the degradation of riparian vegetation. Pollutants from industry, urban areas, and agricultural fields have found their way into the river. The grazing of livestock has denuded vegetation leading to eroded stream banks and causing increased sedimentation, nitrates, and fecal coliforms. The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a world-wide nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting nature for people now and in the future, has been active for a number of years in the San Pedro Valley working to improve the condition of the river basin. They have been working with ranchers, mining operations and other stakeholders to conserve and protect the riparian corridors of the San Pedro Valley. The Nature Conservancy believes in working with other agencies, businesses, and the public to achieve that goal. They also strive for improving the

river by educating landowners, and the public on water quality and quantity issues. TNC recently received a grant in the amount of $396,409 from the Arizona Water Protection Fund for reduction of erosion and sedimentation along the lower San Pedro River through hydrologic restoration of modified ephemeral washes. The grant will allow them to restore a 528-acre parcel of land on the lower San Pedro approximately three miles north of Mammoth. TNC acquired this parcel from the H & E Land and Cattle Company. The land had been identified as having significant impacts on the river. The property consisted of 200 acres of river bottom and 300 acres of irrigated alfalfa/grass hay fields. The farm used approximately 2,200 acrefeet of water per year. For the area between Mammoth and Winkelman (an 18-mile stretch),

Redistricting of Pinal County begins By Mila Lira Voters, take notice in 2012 you may be waking up in new Election Districts. Arizona Revised Statute 11211A requires a county of more than 175,000 in population to have five members on its board of supervisors. Currently Pinal County only has three Supervisory Districts. In the recent decade Pinal County’s population has grown to 375,770 people. Much of this population increase has been in the western part of Pinal County but the new districts could potentially add districts in the San Tan Valley, Maricopa and SaddleBrookeOracle areas. According to redistricting laws, the maps must be drawn up in the year that the new census data is released. In order to complete this process the County has worked with

consultants and the public to help create different scenarios of how the districts will be drawn up. Pinal County Elections Director Steve Kiser explained that in the coming weeks the Board of Supervisors will review all the possible scenarios that have been developed and then decide which of the scenarios will be presented to the public for further comments. Once this step takes place, there will be public meetings throughout the county for the public to review and comment on the proposals. The County expects to have the public hearing process completed and the redistricting map approved by the Supervisors by the end of September early October 2011. Once the map is selected at the County level it will be sent to the Department

of Justice for pre-clearance before it takes affect. The new districts must meet different requirements such as being geographically connected, and have equal population in each district within at least 10 percent of the total population. There must also be assurances under the Voters Rights Act that protect the Minority-Majority voter. In a presentation on the Pinal County Elections website, it was noted that the County “must be able to demonstrate that the plan does not cause retrogression in the ability of members of racial and ethnic minority groups ability to elect the candidates of their choice.” The county also has to look at additional factors when drawing the district boundaries not to split municipalities, urban areas, rural areas, or neighborhoods and they must

also consider other factors such as geographic regions, economic regions and social interests. District One is the largest geographic district and includes the incorporated cities and towns of: Arizona City, Coolidge, Eloy, Kearny, Mammoth, Superior and portions of Florence and Marana and the unincorporated communities of Aravaipa, Dudleyville, Kelvin, Oracle, Riverside, San Manuel and portions of Sutton Summit (Top of the World). Over the years, voters from the Copper Communities in District One have been assured that their voices are heard at the county steps because they elected their fellow neighbors to the Supervisor seat. These elected representatives identified with and understood the quality of

life and the various challenges of the communities in their district, mining operations, labor strikes, limited utility services, telecommunications and transportation problems are all issues that the elected supervisor dealt with over their lifetime not just their term in office. With declining population throughout the copper communities there is a high probability that the towns on the eastern side of the county could be in a new Supervisors district with one or more of the larger communities in Pinal County. The new boundaries could mean that for the first time in many years someone who does not live within See Redistricting, Page 4

Letter to the Editor: New contract nothing to celebrate

Pregnant? Need Help? 520-896-9545

Editor, Copper Basin News: Copper over $4 per pound: A sellout. Some union officers and members were celebrating the new Grupo (ASARCO) contract.

It's back to school. Be smart. Spell breakfast...

Why? What did the union gain? Nothing. They just extended the present contract for two years; but what did they give away? Now, when I speak of the union,

I speak of the District Director and Sub-Director, more so than the local union officers who and unwittingly agreed to this settlement. Or, take it back to

the membership. Which, any fool would know that the work force would accept this contract. Most of the members and some officers of the union have not been educated in the history and the function of unions. Why? The USWA locals gave away pensions. Anyone hired on or after July 1 has no pension. Be it your son, daughter, brother or other kin, they will have a 401K to look forward to. This is not a guaranteed pension. Look at today’s economy. On Oct. 31, 1949, when the first pension for the steel workers was started after a 45-day strike, which I was involved in. We struck for $100 a month, at that time. Social Security was $37.50 per month. Bethlehem Steel Company was the first to settle. Was this all in vain? ASARCO was the last mine in Arizona to have a pension. Not now! Why? ASARCO is also the only copper company still in the union; but for how long. Maybe two years? That’s not all. The union agreed to 10 and 12 hour shifts. That is without time-and-a-half over eight hours, which was also fought for when I and the Unions were young. We will lose the time-and-ahalf over eight hours, if this is implemented. Are we going backwards? Did our forefathers die and strike for nothing? It seems we live in a world of “me first” now! What a shame. I blame this on our union officials for not educating and informing officers and members and new employees about how our union was started and what the union members did, who died and who went on strike to receive what you are giving away. That’s not all. Employees, on July 1 and after, will have to pay more for their medical insurance; more for the deductible and more for the monthly medical insurance payment and also, the prescription drug co-payments and mail order prescriptions will be more. How can you explain this to a potential member you are trying to enlist to our one time great union? When I retired in 1996, I had held the position of President of USWA Local 5252 for more than 26 years, and had been a member of the USWA Union for 44 years, including working in the steel mills in Pittsburgh for 13 years. I have fought and lost some ground, as in 1986, because K.C.C. was going to shut us down and sell the company. We still saved pensions and the retirees were not touched. When I retired, we had a six year contract and our medicare payment was $10 per month. Today, we pay $150 - $200 per month, for a medical program that I protested two-and-a-half years ago. That was not adhered to as agreed to. Everyone from the District Director and SubDistrict Director and USWA Technicians said I was right and that this would be a #1 in these contract talks. We were lied to; or did the union negotiators roll over, scared of Grupo, because the new membership would cross the picket line? Due to the District Officers not educating the members, new employees and the public? You be the judge! /s/ Bernard Zornakci Retired L.O. 5252 President for more than 26 years

Sheriff’s Report The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. July 16 Melina Isalava Lopez, 25, Dudleyville, was arrested in the 6700 block of Valentine, Dudleyville, and charged with disorderly conduct and assault. She was transported and booked

Continued from Page 1 this comprised 39 percent of all water pumped and between Mammoth and the Aravaipa Creek inflow it was 62 percent of the pumped water. The land and river was impacted by irrigation overflow which was being deposited in the floodplain. Land leveling for the farm resulted in natural washes being filled and the flow of water diverted to other parts of the property. Now that the farm is no longer in use and cattle grazing in the area has been stopped, the riparian vegetation is making significant recovery. The Nature Conservancy’s proposed project is attempting to repair massive erosional problems that were caused by the alteration of the natural historical washes as the terrain was cleared and leveled for farming. Molly Hanson, Lower San Pedro River Manager, is in charge of the project. Ramzi Georges of

Redistricting

Continued from Page 1 the Copper Corridor could represent one or more of these communities. In the next few months there will be one final opportunity for residents throughout the county to provide input on the redistricting boundaries. Final dates, times and locations have not been set. The new boundaries are expected to be in place in time for the 2012 election cycle. The redistricting will also affect the State Legislative Districts as well as the Congressional Districts. The Arizona Independent Redistricting Committee (AIRC) has been overseeing the Legislative and Congressional redistricting measures. The Commission was formed by the passage of Proposition 106 by the people of Arizona in the 2000 General Election. These propositions amended the Arizona Constitution to create a five-member commission to redraw Congressional and Legislative district boundaries following the 2000 Census. Previously, the State Legislature was responsible for redrawing the lines. It was believed that the previous practice resulted in boundaries that served the politicians instead of the voters. The five-member Redistricting Commission acts independently of the State Legislature. The commission has hosted a series of public meetings and most of their meeting notes and videos can be seen online at http://www.azredistricting. org to view the online presentation on the Pinal County Redistricting process visit: http://pinalcountyaz. gov/departments/elections/ Pages/Home.aspx.

into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. July 17 Criminal damage was reported in the 48000 block of East Stringer Street, Kearny. The electrical panel was stripped. July 18 Angelica R. Schneider, 25, Winkelman, was arrested in the 76400 block of East Indian Hills, Dudleyville, and charged with criminal damage. She was transported and booked into the David Evans & Associates is the contractor working with the Nature Conservancy. The project involves the moving of tons and tons of earth which will result in a return of the land and washes to its original natural state. After the washes have been reconstructed and the land recontoured, TNC will reseed the land with native plants. Once the project is completed it is expected that • Erosion of tens of thousands of cubic yards of sediment flowing into the San Pedro River will be prevented.

Pinal County Jail. July 22 Jana Marie Frank, 43, Dudleyville, was arrested in the 80400 block of East Aravaipa Road, Aravaipa, and charged with criminal trespass. She was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail. July 25 A five-year-old called 911 to report that a neighbor boy stole his toy car. The call originated in the 76000 block of East Indian Hills Drive, • It will significantly decrease the turbidity in the river and allow for more refugia for native fish. • It will allow for more storm run off to be captured in shallow basins which will contribute to low flow volume in the San Pedro River. The return of this section of the river to its natural state will allow for more habitat for birds and other animals along this corridor. The Nature Conservancy has volunteer opportunities available and accepts donations. For more information or to contact TNC, go to www.nature.org.

Georgie Digs By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) As the years rolled by, it became evident that property owners along lower Aravaipa Creek relied much more on means other than ranching or farming for their livelihood. For example, after Fred T. Ash and Sons had advertised their “PZ” property by the San Pedro

River and their “OK” property of the Aravaipa Creek area by 1984, a Dr. Richard Mulvania of Newport Beach, California bought those properties which he named “Aravaipa Arabian Ranch” but, as far as I know, he didn’t live at either location. His Arabian horses were cared for by others, with the horses housed in a huge barn

that had been erected close to the Aravaipa home that overlooked the creek below. Besides having stalls in it, the barn also had a large exercise area for the horses, and a Bob Masters, followed by “Satch” Rubald, were hired to care for the cattle on the ranch. By 1981, Dick and Donna Raffensparger were living

on the Karl Pratt property on the south side of the creek, and I was told that a Mr. Reeves had acquired that Pratt property previous to it becoming the property of Tony and Susan Luebbermann of Tucson who had bought the Hardin-Pohle property across the creek from it in 1985. I was also told that Tony worked for the city of Tucson, and Susan was working for the Arizona State Museum in Tucson. After Edward E. “Jed” Wilson sold his Aravaipa Farms property to Ronald W. Samoyloff of Canada, the first caretaker there was an Ed Overmeyer, and by 1981 Fred HarkReader was the caretaker, and living with Fred was his wife, Maris, and her daughter, Jan. After Bill and Rafaela Farney of California bought the Aravaipa Farms, it was about 1984 when over a thousand fruit trees were planted there. In fact, Cliff and I bought a few Asian Pear trees from Bill Farney in 1986,

but, as good as Cliff was at gardening, the trees didn’t do well where we lived on the hill above the creek area. The Farney children were Rafaela’s daughter, Karrie, and their young son, “Tommie”. After the 1983 Aravaipa Creek flood, and after Fred and Alice Wood had moved to their new property “Falm Ranch” from the Panorama Ranch that then was part of the George Whittell Wildlife Preserve and managed by the Defenders of Wildlife (DOW), Fred wanted the Panorama Ranch homesite taken care of. So, as soon as someone could live there after the 1983 flood damage, he was able to get Jerry O’Neil and his wife to live there in the old house where Fred and Alice had lived. Jerry was not related to the Dr. Jim O’Neil family who had property along Aravaipa Creek, but he was a teacher at the local college. Because the old irrigation ditch had been washed out, the best Jerry could do was

to irrigate by hose. After the Jerry O’Neils left, Glen Johnson, another teacher at the college, lived there with some of his family, and he set up a block foundation for a creekside gas pump so the place could be better irrigated. Alice Wood hadn’t been well for some time, and she died at her Falm Ranch home in May of 1986. The following year, Fred sold his property to Dr. Roy R. Gettel of Tucson who named the property “Diamond G Ranch”, and Fred moved to Tucson to be close to his school-teacher son, Lynn. What a big change of lifestyle for Fred who had turned 82 years old in November of 1986.
