PCSO warns of a Jury Duty Scam

Pinal County, AZ – The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office wants to let the community know of a scam impacting people in the county. On Sept. 19, 2017, we received a call from a victim who was defrauded out of hundreds of dollars. The victim states a person called claiming to be with the Pima County Sheriff’s office and informed the victim that the victim missed jury duty and a warrant was being issued for the victims’ arrest. The person gave very specific instructions for the victim to pay $861.90 to avoid arrest. The victim was instructed to get a green dot card, load the money and provide him with the PIN number. The victim did as instructed. After hanging up the phone the victim checked the website for the Pima County Superior Court http://www. sc.pima.gov/, the victim discovered Pima County has a juror scam alert on the website. Pima County Superior Court issued a warning after receiving several reports of the same scam. According to the warning released, someone falsely claiming to represent the Court has been calling Pima County residents advising they are being contacted for “failure to appear” for jury duty. The caller advises them that

because they failed to report for jury duty one or more fines is owed. Sometimes the caller asks for the entire amount of the fines, but sometimes informs them they may take care of the fines at a reduced rate by paying money, or a “retainer bond,” to the caller. The caller can be quite forceful and threatening. The caller is not from the Superior Court or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. The public should be aware that the Court and law enforcement officers will NEVER contact a person by telephone or email and demand payment of a fine to avoid being arrested for failing to appear for jury service. Do not make any payments, provide credit card information or any other personal information, and never give out your social security number. The Pinal County Clerk of Superior Court does not send out Failure to Appear notices nor do they call if you do not show up for jury duty. If you receive a document from the Pinal County Clerk of Superior Court for failing to appear to jury duty, then it is a forged document. If you have questions call (520) 509-3555. OBITUARY Samuel Frank Horton Samuel Frank Horton passed away on Aug. 29, 2017, at his home in Kearny with his family by his side. He was born June 13, 1944 in Tucson to Samuel and Irene Horton. He married Aida Lopez on Sept. 27, 1974 in Kearny. He worked at Kennecott and Asarco as a haulage truck driver until his retirement. Sam enjoyed going to casinos with Aida and liked watching the Diamondbacks. He enjoyed traveling with family and walking in the desert until his health prevented him from doing so. He always faced his problems and attended AA for 28 years. He leaves behind his wife, Aida; daughters, Mary Ann Williams (David) of Tucson and Cindy Horton (Jon) of Kearny; son, Sam Horton Jr. (Mona) of Kearny; grandchildren, David, Cortez and Vince Williams of Tucson, Azalia Jimenez and Nevaeh Horton of Kearny, Anissa Horton of Tucson, and Jon and Kenny Bailey of Kearny; sisters, Ann Morrow of Coolidge, Patsy Walters and Christine Duran, both of Tucson, and Ruby Smith (Joe) of Kearny; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dicky and Albert, and sister, Betty. Memorial services were held at the Kearny Church of Christ on Sept. 16. Sam will always be remembered and cherished in his loved ones’ hearts.

Mine Agreement At Last

he United Steelworkers announced last Thursday, September 21, that a collective bargaining agreement was ratified covering ASARCO copper mine operations in Arizona and Texas, including the Ray Mine and the Hayden Smelter. The agreement covers about 2,000 workers. The agreement has been a long time coming. The original contract ended in June of 2013 but was extended until it was terminated in June, 2015. The workers stayed on the job without a contract while negotiations continued. The new agreement will expire on Nov. 30, 2018. I haven’t read the agreement, but I understand there was some give and take. The miners will pay more of their insurance themselves, but the mine is restoring some of the bonuses. The short period of the agreement seems to bring a “breathing period” for both ASARCO and the unions to focus on a longer term agreement in the future. Grupo Mexico, which owns ASARCO and several copper mines in Mexico and South America, controls 70 percent of the railroads in Mexico. Last August it reported consolidated sales for the first six months of the year at $4.51 billion (up 13% over the same time last year) and a net profit of $801 million. Small towns can do well, but only if there is enough employment. No one wants to return to the old company town model, but at its best it fostered a tradition of mining pride, self-worth, and dignity. Back then, the result was that the mines had a reliable and trained workforce, and the workforce could support families and town activities, including schools. Yes, we don’t want the old company town, but do need the re-engagement of the towns and the mines. Maybe this new agreement will be the breather we all need. The Kearny Town Council, at the meeting of Monday, September 18, approved a contract with Police Chief Wallace Kenney, and also entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the

San Manuel Fire Department to provide dispatch services for their use. In return, the San Manuel Fire Department will pay $7,500 per year to Kearny for expenses. The Town Council also approved the submission of three grants. The first is request to the San Carlos Apache Tribe for the costs of a new ambulance; the second is to Arizona State Parks and Trail for monies to rebuild the Mescal Mountain Park facilities after they were vandalized; and the third is to Fire House Subs (yep, the Valley sandwich place) for metal shelters for some of our fire equipment. Kudos to the Kearny Police Department for enforcing the local codes, especially for wrong-side parking and for speed violations. These are simple matters of keeping the public safe. Local laws exist for local betterment, and there are some others which the town will soon begin enforcing more closely. We’re almost into October. Groups, businesses, and individual are being asked by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce to help with the Great Pumpkin and Trick or Trunk on Saturday, October 28, on Alden Road in Kearny. Chamber Director Kellie Towne is eager to get us all involved.

Abandoned Vehicles The Town of Kearny has received several complaints regarding abandoned vehicles on the streets, causing a safety hazard. The Town of Kearny Police Department is now attempting to contact the vehicle owner and tag the vehicle if it is abandoned on the street. The following is from the Town Ordinance: Section 11-3-6 Abandoned Vehicles If the owner of a vehicle allows such vehicle to remain on any street or roadway in the town for a period of thirty-six hours or more, when said vehicle is not properly or currently licensed, or when said vehicle is not in a drivable condition for any reason, said vehicle may be removed from the street or roadway by the police department. Towing and storage shall be paid by the owner of the vehicle. Section 11-3-7 Parking of Mobile Homes, Recreational Vehicles, Boat Trailers, Trailers and Similar Equipment Motor homes, recreational vehicles, boat trailers, trailers and other similar equipment shall not be parked on town streets for more than seventy-two hours. The police department shall notify the owner after seventy-two hours by placing a warning on the equipment that it must be moved within twenty-four hours. If not removed within said twenty-four hours, the police department may have it removed from the street or roadway. Towing and impoundment fees will be paid at owner’s expense. Storage fees will be set from time to time by the council.

Ray defeats Ft. Thomas for fourth-straight win By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News

The eighth-ranked Ray football team won its fourthstraight game, defeating visiting Ft. Thomas last Friday, 56 – 22. All four of the Cats’ victories so far this season have been lopsided, each by 25 points or more. Senior Fabian Valenzuela returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and finished the game with a team-high 199 allpurpose yards, including 20 yards rushing, 20 receiving and

159 return yards. He also added a rushing touchdown and was one of the three receivers with a touchdown reception. Dakota Willis, a junior, and sophomore Eric Manriquez were the others. Junior quarterback Jaden Pace threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, in addition to leading Ray with 219 total yards against the Apaches. Senior running back Nathan Molar rushed for a team-high 94 yards on 12 carries, an average of nearly eight yards per carry. After leading at halftime, 36 – 8, the Cats outscored the

Apaches 20 – 14 in the second half. Senior Dyllin Lopez again starred for the Cats on defense, accounting for three of the team’s five sacks in the game. He also had four tackles-for-loss. Molar led the Cats with 11 tackles, an interception and a sack. Valenzuela had 10 tackles. Ray faces its stiffest test to date when it travels to No. 6-ranked Superior this Friday. The undefeated Panthers have posted consecutive shutouts and allowed only 12 points in their last four games. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The sixth-ranked Superior football team continued its dominance on both sides of the ball in a 38 – 0 at No. 10 Hayden last Friday. Superior improved to 5 – 0 while Hayden is now 3 – 2. The Panthers’ defense was especially impressive in the win, shutting out it second-straight opponent. Superior defeated Ft. Thomas two weeks ago, 60 – 0. “Our defense is fast and attacks the football well,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said. “When we play assignment football and are fundamentally sound, we are tough to move the ball on.” “Our speed ultimately proved too much for Hayden,” he added. “Our defense played one of their best games of the season.” The defense had six sacks against the Lobos, including three by junior Cedric Mendoza, who also had five tackles. It’s been feast for famine for the Lobos so far, this season. In their three wins, the Lobos are averaging almost 43 points per game but in their two losses, zero. “We had some opportunities to score but couldn’t pull the trigger,” Hayden head coach John Estrada said. “Superior’s defense gave us problems all night.” The Panthers’ 38-point scoring total snapped a three-game streak of scoring 60 points or more, but the offense still filled the stat sheet. Junior quarterback Steven Ybarra threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 73 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also led the team on defense with nine tackles and an interception. Pinal County mom attributes kindergarten success to parenting education program Mid-year of kindergarten at Butterfield Elementary School in Maricopa, 5-year-old Ruby Hoeh’s reading indicators were assessed. She was performing at a first grade level and had a strong foundation to become a successful reader. Her mother Kristy Hoeh attributes much of the success to Ruby’s participation in the Apache Junction Fun Van program at the Maricopa Library. First Things First funds the Apache Junction Library Fun Van to bring the program to parents, caregivers and accompanying young children (age’s birth to 5) that live throughout Pinal County. The Fun Van offers an eight-week program, two-part program consisting of Early Childhood STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) and Raising A Reader. Both parenting education programs teach helpful parenting techniques to improve family communication and encourage cooperation. STEP provides parents with effective discipline strategies that promote self-esteem and mutual respect. While Raising a Reader is designed to foster a love of books by developing a habit of reading with your child, it also teaches parents reading strategies to expand their child’s thinking, promoting language and literacy development. Hoeh signed up for the Fun Van when her daughter

Kristy was just 2 years old and she was pregnant with her son Jimmy. The program staff taught Hoeh how to engage her daughter by asking open-ended questions with the goal of getting the kids to think. “Every week we received a new book to take home and learned about activities kids could do in everyday life that promote reading, text recognition and vocabulary building,” said Hoeh. The parent educator also helped Hoeh work through her daughter’s daily power struggles and meltdowns. “Kristy was feeling frustrated when she first entered our program, said Fun Van Parent Educator Felicia Smith. “Her daughter Ruby had very strong feelings and they were both just trying to get through each day. Hoeh was raised to feel like her feelings were not her own. ‘That’s not how you feel,’ was something she heard regularly at home so she wanted to raise her children to feel comfortable expressing what they were feeling or needing.” For Hoeh, it meant learning to acknowledge her children’s feelings even when she doesn’t approve of how they are expressing them, such as saying, “I love you so I’m not going to argue with you,” and “I see you’re really upset, but it’s not OK to talk to mommy like that.” She also began setting personal boundaries Continued on page 13

ArtUs Guild begins fall session The Copper Basin ArtUs Guild’s fall session and will begin Friday, Sept. 22 at Ray Hall next to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kearny. Sessions will be held each Friday starting at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day until 3 p.m. with a break for lunch. Members are not required to be in attendance at all times and schedules are flexible. Membership in the guild is open to anyone interested in the arts. All mediums are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience. There is no formal instructor and members are encouraged to help each other when help is requested. Just the love

of creativity is all that one needs to join the group. The group is also extending an invitation to anyone interested in beginning to explore the world of creativity. This is not a formal class, but beginners are welcome and supplies and tips are available to get you started. If you’re not sure about joining the group you are under no obligation to come and check it out. Dues are $25 for the fall session. The group is planning to continue the annual ArtUs exhibit next spring at the Little Gallery with a date to be announced later. PHOENIX – Across the state, many shared utility services that communities rely on run through corridors directly underneath them. These include: natural gas, electricity, communications, water and more. Too often, homeowners completing Do it Yourself projects in their yard do not realize that many of these utilities may be buried just a few inches below ground. Arizona 811, Arizona Public Service, Southwest Gas and SRP want to warn customers of the dangers associated with digging into a utility line and encourage customers to know what’s below – call 811 before you dig. Unfortunately, too many people in the United States will dig this year without first having underground utility lines marked. Digging into these lines can cause, serious injuries and make for costly repairs. In 2016, more than 2,000 incidents of hit utility lines were reported in Arizona. Underground power lines, while well insulated, can be easily damaged by a shovel or pick and create a shock or flash hazard. This not only poses a safety risk but can also cause an interruption of service to customers. Southwest Gas reminds the public that a natural gas leak can be detected by a distinct sulfur-like odor, like rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary. Unusual hissing or roaring coming from the ground or an above-ground pipeline, bubbling water and discolored plants or grass surrounding a pipeline, can also be signs of a leak. Contact Arizona 811 from anywhere in Arizona at least two full working days prior to digging. Arizona 811 will send the homeowner’s utility companies out to the site to locate and mark the underground lines, pipes and cables at, or near, a planned

dig site. Customers can also make an 811 ticket request easily online using E-Stake. Do you know what the utility markings on the ground mean? In the United States, uniform color codes for temporary marking of underground utilities are: · RED – electric power lines, cables, conduit and lighting cables · ORANGE – telecommunication, alarm or signal lines, cables or conduit · YELLOW – natural gas, oil, steam, petroleum or other gaseous or flammable material · GREEN – sewers and drain lines · BLUE – drinking water, irrigation and slurry lines · PURPLE – reclaimed water · PINK – temporary survey markings, unknown/unidentified facilities · WHITE – proposed excavation limits or routes
