Pastor’s Corner By Rev. Dennis Van Gorp Family Life Christian Center One of the rules in a good parenting class is to choose your battles wisely. Children will always push the envelope to discover where your boundaries are and how far they can go. Through the years, we soon discover that this rule is a lifetime decision. It deals with not only raising children, it is also an important aspect of personal relationships, job integrity and community involvement. Making a quality decision

requires solid wisdom. James 1:5 tells us, “If you lack wisdom, ask God, who gives generously.” Later on in 3:17 he describes this wisdom: “it is first of all pure, then peaceloving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” That is exactly the input we need when making a crucial decision; the wisdom provided by God to choose our battles. Throughout Scripture, kings and leaders were dependent on asking God what they should do. Those who ignored this

source of advice usually failed in their battles and lost the war. David, the king of Israel, in 1 Samuel 23 inquired of the Lord, saying, “shall I go and attack the Philistines?” He needed to know two things: is this the right thing to do, and is it the right time to do it? God’s answer was, “yes, go and attack them.” When God has shown us our battle, we must, according to Philippians 1:27 and 28, conduct

ourselves in a worthy manner; moving forward with boldness and determination to accomplish the task at hand. Do not waver in your decision, or success will not be yours. Be strong in your courage to do your best. Another reason to inquire of the Lord about the upcoming fight is this: there are many battles ahead. You cannot fight all of them. You must pick and choose which ones to fight and which ones to walk away from. If you

September 28, 2011

go into the wrong battles and God is not with you, you will be injured in your body, faith and hope. In a really tough battle, you may even become a statistic instead of a survivor. When you have fought the wrong battle and lost, God can restore everything. But isn’t it easier to do it right the first time? Less headaches, frustration and fatigue. Some battles, we are not meant to fight. In 2 Chronicles 20:15,

God said, “the battle is not yours.” They were to prepare and arm themselves for battle, being led by the Tabernacle Worship Team. By obeying God, they arrived to discover the enemy already dead, they were too late to fight. This one was the Lord’s battle. Ask God for wisdom and then choose wisely. Follow His lead and be obedient to His guidance. You are now on the winning side. Praise The Lord!

Coming together on Hill Street, refurbishing a church By Taylor Beard Some of you may have noticed the serious influx of people to Superior these last few weekends. If you live on or around Hill Street than you definitely noticed it. Anything warranting the help of hundreds of volunteers is worth sitting up and taking notice. Not only are there hundreds of volunteers, but these volunteers have been coming together from all over the Valley and even the state these last few weekends in a highly organized manner for a dedicated purpose. Kingdom Hall on Hill Street in Superior needed some refurbishment. So like bees to pollen, hundreds of Jehovah’s Witnesses from all over the state

have come to Superior every weekend since the end of August to make that happen. Some of you may be thinking, no big deal, people do this all the time, but this is a little different… when I arrived Saturday morning to speak with Rudy Carreno (many of you know him from Bank of the West), I literally thought I had arrived at a professional project and found myself thinking ‘so the volunteers are to help with odd jobs?’ No, NO, about this I was entirely mistaken. It looks like a professional project because many of the volunteers working on the project are professionals in one trade or another in their daily lives. They just happen to be volunteering

their efforts for this noble cause. Certainly there are non-construction minded individuals volunteering their efforts and each of them are being taught a discipline that they can then master and pass on to someone else, Rudy explained to me. I am not going to beat around the bush, it was fairly spectacular to behold, this hum of activity which looked like it had either the mastermind of a pro or at least had been planned out for months, coming together in a highly effective fashion. The building was first constructed in the early 1960s and naturally See Church, Page 5

Albo Guzman...business leader and friend By Mila Lira This month community business leader and friend to many, Albo Guzman, celebrated his 70th birthday. Most people are familiar with Albo from his trucking, sand and gravel business located on Mary Drive in Superior, his familiar Albo Trucking T-Shirts, or his love of mules. His local business Albo Guzman Trucking employs nine staff members with all of them being from the Copper Corridor area. Albo shared with the Superior Sun his philosophy on running a successful business. As a young child Albo created

many entrepreneurial endeavors from hauling Cokes up to the tunnel to sell to thirsty travelers and construction workers and shining shoes every Saturday. He shared wonderful memories of being able to use spend his hard earned money to enjoy hamburger meals and nights at the movies with his earnings in downtown Superior. One thing that Albo hopes to see once again is all the buildings on Main St. and throughout town opened as businesses once again. As an adult Albo has owned a tortilla factory and a water hauling business in the Apache Junction area. Albo explained

that the tortilla factory was not as successful as he planned but he learned a lot and says he still remembers being up at 3 a.m. “to make the tortillas.” Understanding that you have to take risks in business is usually critical to any entrepreneur and Albo gave this advice to anyone considering opening a business. “If you think your idea can make a business the only way you will know is to get in there and do it,” he said. He explained that entrepreneurs must put their hearts and souls into the success of any business and owning a business does take a lot of hard work. He explained that even today he experiences challenges in owning his trucking business. As mining regulations and safety requirements change, his business has had to adapt. He attributed his success as a businessman to keeping a positive attitude and surrounding himself with his friends and family. He explained that he put everything he had into opening his tortilla factory and when he had to close it he lost everything. “When you hit bottom,” Albo said, “you only have one way to go and that’s up.” Over the years Albo has become a leading advocate for the Resolution Copper Mine Project. He explained that this

Albo Guzman served as Sheriff during the recently held Night of the Cowboy. (Taylor Beard photo) project is important to him because the Resolution Copper project will provide jobs and opportunities to the youth of Superior. He said when he was young, kids could graduate and have good jobs at home

in Superior but now it is much harder for young people to find work in Superior and they have to leave. He also hopes that once the Land Exchange is passed more people will return home to

Superior to open businesses and work at the mine. Albo and many of his friends have led sign making campaigns and gathered hundreds of signatures of other supporters See Albo, Page 10

Continued from Page 3 things come due for some improvements. This was the case and it was decided that this building needed to be fully gutted. After this was decided, between six and seven hundred different volunteers have lent their help to the cause, coming from as far away as Tuba City each weekend to make this dream a reality. “We call them our brothers,” Rudy said. “It’s all voluntary. They come here and we feed them and we work together.” He explained how projects like this come to fruition within their church community. “Everything we do whether it’s a remodel of a Kingdom Hall or building a new Kingdom Hall, we have departments and skilled individuals who come to use the skills from the ground up,” he said. “The projects are always very safety conscious with first aid and safety inspectors at every build.” So in essence, the project is run exactly like a professional project would be. No wonder I thought it was a professional job when I cruised in. He explained that it hasn’t

Superior Sun, Superior, Arizona just been volunteers within the congregation, but that there has been community help as well. “We would love to thank Resolution Copper and CRC for their help with this project,” he said and beyond those two major contributors, he added, “Sandra at Circle K and Richard at Save Money have been very kind in giving us ice and helping with other products.” Due to all of the volunteer labor and help from outside sources, the Superior congregation of Jehovah’s

Witnesses is able to complete this remodel for roughly $30,000, the cost of supplies, which is incredible considering that a similar project with labor and supplies would easily cost around $250,000. They’ve even had the equipment necessary donated by other members of the church. Even though they have been able to keep their costs so low, they have also been able to give different members of the community leftover materials that they do not need for the project. They are getting down

to the last two weeks of the project so you can really see it coming together…and beyond this you can see the quality of the craftsmanship and the dedication they have to making this a beautiful church for their brothers. As Rudy and I were walking around the project (I was, of course, given a dainty white hard hat), he pointed out the new block wall that was being built (and it looks pretty awesome) and then told me that they began working on that only a few hours earlier. One big thing that I noticed was

Page 5 that people were happy, smiling and laughing, they were genuinely having a good time with one another; I don’t know about you, but if I was doing hard labor in 99˚, I probably wouldn’t be smiling, let alone laughing. As work has progressed on the project, there have been behind-thescenes help as well in the form of volunteers who take shifts to cover the security that has been necessary 24/7 since the project began, and the meals that have been provided on weekends for the volunteers who have been so kind to come and help out. Rudy explained that every morning before they start work they have morning worship and remind everyone about safety. “Safety is foremost for us, even

though they are professionals, we just remind them not to get in a hurry or rush, but just to keep it safe,” he said. Even without the rush, the project has made remarkable progress over the course of the last month. It is expected to be completed the second week in October and they will be holding an open house for their neighbors, “since we understand that people are naturally going to be curious about what’s going on,” Rudy said. As I said before, it looks like a pro deal and I can tell that everything, inside and out, is going to be simply beautiful once it is completed. Look out for news on the open house once the project is completed within the next two weeks.

Superior finds a difficult opponent in Pima Roughriders By Taylor Beard Following their huge win against the Hayden Lobos, the Superior Panthers were riding on a massive high and considering the serious bit of talent that they displayed in that game, they deserved that lovely feeling. Yet, their next opponent, the Pima Roughriders proved to be a more apt adversary. The boys quickly found out that regardless of all their hard work, they still have some tricks to learn. While they did play exceedingly well during the game against Pima, the Roughriders played just a titch better and took the game. The final score was left Superior 28-42 Pima. Bummer, Boys! Looks like you get to spend some of your break beating the field during practice getting ready for your game against Cibeque. The Superior Panthers will be playing a no-doubt dynamic game against Cibeque this Friday, Sept. 30, in Cibeque at 7 p.m. Be sure to come out and support the boys in their quest to defeat the Wildcats!

New digs for Parks & Rec ... Dia de Colores: Delicious Delights for Eyes and Tummy By Taylor Beard As you know, Dia de Colores is drawing close and, if I can be blatantly honest, I am kind of waiting for it the way that I used to wait for Christmas as a kid. It should be a blast or explosion rather, of color, culture and cool. I recently spoke with Jeffrey Ferns, one of the main artists involved in the festival, along with being the caterer of its muchanticipated dinner. Everything he told me probably made my eyeballs wide like saucers, since my ears were pricked with the lovely information they were receiving. Jeffrey will be creating an altarfilled art space, alive with color, passion, culture and history, noting the life of a spectacular individual. When he started describing the menu to me, my taste buds began paying attention and very quickly my mouth was watering. Considering that we live in the desert, it seems appropriate that it be the theme of this fabulous meal, using things easily found close by.

This goes hand-in-hand with fellow artist Larry Jochai’s theme of using found object to create his artwork. Why not use the edible delectable of the desert? It seems a pity not to. So since this is a festival focusing of the color, beauty and culture of Superior, Jeffrey brings that focus to the table, creating a Taste of Superior bar, full of samples of the local culinary talent. Sample these as you enjoy your chia and jicama waters. From here the dinner begins to blossom, first with a tantalizing salad comprised of mixed greens with pickled nopalito, red onions and cherry tomatoes, sparkling with fresh chevŕe and chipotle vinaigrette. This is followed by a Chicken Pallard that has been mesquite grilled with local mesquite, accompanied with a desert inspired cactus and root vegetable cassoulet, with such tasty roots as parsnips, carrots, yukons, beets, and sweet potatoes to beautifully pair with the cholla buds and onions and garlic (which now seem quite droll compared with the

other stars of this party of flavor). But no, the flavor continues with a luscious mushroom couscous to round the flavors out. All this is finished off in the most mouthwatering manner with lovingly-grilled plums that have been splashed with a drizzle of balsamic. Your palate is complete. To round out the evening, Jeffrey will be creating one-of-a-kind natural centerpieces with desert elements and found objects. No doubt these will probably blow our minds and keep our attention just long enough to forget the incredible dinner that is quickly approaching. Beyond this he will be opening

New financial contracts possible for delinquent sewer, trash bills By Taylor Beard For those of you who have found that, due to the untimely circumstances of a crap economy, you have fallen slightly behind on your sewer and trash bills, relief is on the way…there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is no point in allowing bills to build up and become an even larger problem that they need be, especially since the Town of Superior is willing to come to the table and work with citizens to lower these past due bills. It is now possible to create a financial contract with the Town of Superior in order to pay off your past due sewer bill over time and the really cool thing about taking this route is that you will not be charged interest – you will only pay towards the bill that you owe at the time that you create the contract. This means that you will be forgoing those finance charges that you are currently accruing.

The Town of Superior is absolutely willing to work with whatever budget is brought to it; the town fully understands that many people are on a very strict budget. The Town of Superior is willing to drop charging interest when someone signs a financial contract because doing so shows that they are at least taking steps in the right direction – it shows they want to rectify the situation. This is a great route to take as it not only avoids further interest, but it can possibly avoid being charged $100 for the final notice delivery by the police and potentially upwards of $2,000 in attorney’s fees when bills are sent to collections. Beyond these very relevant points, it reduces stress for the citizens who are behind. So how does it work? It’s simple really, you head into Town Hall and it takes about five minutes to fill

Four named to new Superior EDC board By Taylor Beard Good things are happening within the town of Superior as it moves towards having a fully operational Economic Development Committee. Having been given the go-ahead for creation by the town council, the new EDC took another big step in beginning to create its new board of directors. During the town council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, council members

discussed the possible candidates and happily they moved forward in approving all of the potential board members. When you see Pete Casillas, Sonny Sansom, Curt Williams and Michael Carnes, be sure to thank them for their service to the community of Superior through their work with the Superior Economic Development Committee. It’s quickly becoming a fantastic reality!

If you are only able to pay $50 a month, your current bill of $38 will be taken out and the remaining $12 will go towards your old bill. This way you are paying down your past due and ensuring that your current bill is being paid and not adding to the debt. This is a very positive step for the town to help others who have fallen on hard times. For more information on this program, please contact Superior Town Hall, 520-6895752.

PZ-PA-001-11: Pinal County, requesting a text amendment to the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan by amending the language of Chapter 7: Environmental Stewardship, to add and edit policies and objectives concerning the provision of information by applicants on water demand, water supply and water sources at the time applications are filed for zoning cases by: Amending Policy 7.2.1.1 to read as follows: As provided under specific provisions of Title 11 of the Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S. § 11-806.01.F), the Pinal County Board of Supervisors shall, by the end of 2012, consider adoption of a provision (requiring a unanimous vote), that requires a new subdivision, located outside an AMA, to have an adequate water supply as defined by A.R.S. § 45-108.I in order for the subdivision final plat to be approved by the County. This policy was endorsed by the Water Element Citizen Task Force Amending Objective 7.2.5 to read as follows: In order for the County to have information about water supplies needed to satisfy future development, the County shall consider requiring zoning applicants to provide information about water demand and potential supplies for their projects. Adding Policy 7.2.5.3 read as follows: Consider adding the following language to zoning cases if the County requires zoning applicants to provide water information at time of zoning: Approval of this zoning case is not an approval of water adequacy or water quality. This zoning is being granted in general support of the Comprehensive Plan’s goals and objectives, but the applicant’s ability to develop this property rests upon a demonstration to ADWR that there is sufficient water to serve the proposed development at the time of final platting. PZ-PA-002-11: Pinal County, requesting a text amendment to the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan by amending the language of Chapter 10: Implementation, to add criteria establishing when road re-alignment requests are processed as Major Comprehensive Plan amendments or non-major Comprehensive Plan amendments by: Adding Major Amendment Criteria (inserted on Page 322) to read as follows: • Any proposed realignment of a Planned Freeway or a High Capacity Corridor. • Any proposed realignment of a Enhanced Parkway, Parkway or Principal Arterial if it meets this criterion: • The realignment is greater than one half mile in total length, excluding the proposed development site, unless it meets the non-major amendment criteria Adding Non-Major Amendment Criteria (inserted on page 323) to read as follows: • Any proposed realignment of a Enhanced Parkway, Parkway or Principal Arterial if it meets any of these criteria: • The realignment is less than one half mile in total length, excluding the proposed development site. • The realignment is greater than one half but less than 2 miles in total length, excluding the proposed development site, provided the realignment request is submitted in conjunction with a rezoning proposal for a development that: • Creates a minimum of 150 permanent full time jobs within the first 12 months of completion of construction • Produces more than $2,000,000 in gross annual payroll; and creates a multiplier effect of at least 1: 1; and represents an increase in property value for construction of a new or expanded facility. • Proposes a minimum of 7 million dollars in capital investment • must average a $48,000 employee annual wage The Pinal County Economic Development Manager, or other person authorized by the County Manager will determine which projects meet these criteria. The authorized person will forward a memorandum to the Planning and Development Director stating his findings. • Proposed realignments of roadways with a classification lower than Principal Arterial do not require Comprehensive Plan amendments. Adding a definition as a sidebar to read as follows: Multiplier effect describes how a company that hires one person, known as the direct hire, will start a chain reaction that

Albo

Continued from Page 4 from throughout the Copper Corridor. He has also submitted editorials and purchased ads in local newspapers in support of this project. Albo expressed great thanks to his friends and family for helping him support the Resolution Copper Mine Project. Albo explained that there are a lot of people working hard to get the Land Exchange completed. He complimented Senators John McCain and Jon Kyle and Representatives Paul Gossar and Jeff Flake for their leadership but expressed great frustration that Congressman Raul Grijalva has refused to visit Superior or respond to the letters and petitions that he has personally sent to his office. He suggested that “Grijalva just focus on his district and stop interfering in the business of the copper communities.” He also explained that in order for the businesses in Superior to succeed they must use each other’s services. He thanked other local contractors Copper Resource Contracting and Dalmolin Excavating for purchasing materials from his company for many of their projects. He said often times out of town contractors come in never bother to purchase from the local suppliers which hurts the local businesses. Albo’s signature logo for his business is a Mule and if you ever call Albo to order some sand or request other services you will hear his signature mule ring back tone. Albo explained that the mule is half burro and half horse. They are sure footed, won’t lead you into any trouble, and they work until you make them stop and that is why he likes them so much. The mule has many characteristics that a customer can find when doing business with Albo Guzman Trucking. This month Albo celebrated his 70th birthday with more than 100 of his friends and family. Throughout his interview Albo expressed his thanks for having such wonderful friends and family that supported him throughout the years. When Albo is not busy running his business, or advocating for the Resolution Copper Mine Project he enjoys hunting and camping with his friends and family.
