where she resided for the past 10 years. Virginia was born on May 26, 1919, to Eduard and Jessie Lepley, a farm family in Gifford, Iowa, during the Depression, the eldest of four children: Iona, Eddie and Kathleen. After graduating from Cornell Teachers College in Iowa, Virginia borrowed $50 from the local bank and traveled west to Morenci, Arizona to her first teaching job. While teaching in Tucson she met her future husband, John Mitchell, through her assistant, John’s sister, Anise. Virginia and John spent their life together raising a family in Superior. Virginia and John owned and operated two retail clothing stores, one in Superior, and the other in San Manuel, where they partnered with John’s sister, Adele. Virginia was dedicated to community service, an ever-curious and avid reader, an accomplished quilter, an enthusiastic teacher, and an adventurous world traveler.

At age 54, she earned a Master’s Degree from Arizona State University on the same night that her daughter received her Bachelor’s Degree in Washington, D.C. Two of her most prized accomplishments were her induction into the Superior High School Hall of Fame and her 63-year membership in Beta Sigma Phi. John’s mother, Nazha Tibshraeny, the family matriarch, was born in Lebanon and Virginia adopted that Middle Eastern culture as her own, including becoming an accomplished cook of Lebanese delicacies. John and Virginia’s house in Superior was often home base for family celebrations including John’s other siblings, Rose, Espear, Adele, Anis, Anise, Alice, Helen and their families. Virginia is survived by her three children, John Jr. and his wife Debra Conrardy Mitchell of Mesa, Jessica and her husband, David Fleischer, of New York City, and Michael and his wife, Lee Ellen Banks of El Paso, Texas; her grandchildren, Matthew Mitchell of Irvine, California, Emma Fleischer of West Hollywood, California, Derek Mitchell of Dallas, Texas, Alex Mitchell of Istanbul, Turkey, and a great grandchild, Johnny Mitchell. A Celebration of Virginia’s life will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Skirm Auditorium at Friendship Village, 2645 E. Southern Ave. in Tempe, Arizona. She will be interred in a private family ceremony in the Superior Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, 37615 East US Highway 60, Superior, Arizona 85273 or www.arboretum.ag.arizona.

Local third grade students to receive free dictionaries GLOBE – Gila County third grade students will soon be receiving a special gift thanks to the generosity of a consortium of community service organizations comprised of: The Pinal Mountain Elks #2809, The Rotary Club of Globe, The Copper Cities Rotary of Miami, The Superior Rotary Club and The Emblem Club #554. This consortium will be providing dictionaries to all third grade students attending the following elementary schools: Superior, Miami, Globe, Destiny, Young, San Carlos and Saint Charles Elementary. It is estimated that 500 dictionaries will be distributed this school year. This year, with the assistance of Gila County School Superintendent Linda O’Dell’s office, the consortium will also be providing dictionaries to home schooled third grade students. If your student is home schooled, you can pick up your student’s free dictionary in the Gila County Schools Office, located inside the Gila County Courthouse. For the last 4 or 5 years, the Consortium distributed dictionaries to students in an effort to enhance the academic experience of our local
third grade students. The “Dictionary Project” is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. The goal of this program is to assist all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Reading is the most important skill of all. It is the starting point for all the economic and social opportunities this world has to offer to an individual. Each student must write his or her name in the new dictionary! A final tidbit: All the third grade students will know where to find the longest word in the English language. Would you know where to look? The Pinal Mountain Elks, Globe Rotary, Superior Rotary, Emblem Club and Copper Cities Rotary challenge parents and students alike to find the longest word in the dictionary. (We at the Superior Sun think it might be: antidisestablishmentarianism. But then again, we might be wrong.)

Panthers bring back Copper Helmet By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun
After residing in Kearny for the past two seasons, the Copper Helmet made its return to Superior last Friday night after the sixth-ranked Panthers cruised to a 54 – 8 victory at Ray, spoiling the Bearcats’ homecoming in the process. “Winning the Copper Helmet was one of the goals on our checklist for the season,” Superior senior captain Elias Olmos told the Superior Sun. Already leading 20 – 8 at halftime, the Panthers erupted for 28 points in the third quarter and scored a total of 34 unanswered points in the second half. Quarterback Nicolaus Cruz threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns while junior running back Edgar Galindo rushed for a team-high 88 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Michael Salazar finished with 133 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns – two receiving and one rushing – in the win. The Panthers notched their fifth-straight lopsided win, but perhaps even more impressive is the consistency they’ve shown each week against inferior opponents, something that is not always easy to do. “We’ve just been trying to out-work our opponents all week in practice,” Olmos said. “We have to understand that we’re going to have to play at a high level against those big teams so we’re getting in the habit of doing it now and getting ready for those types of game later in the season.” The Panthers forced four turnovers on defense – three interceptions and one fumble. Cruz, Olmos, and Galindo each had an interception with Galindo returning his for a touchdown. Galindo also had the fumble recovery. Next up for Superior is Chandler Prep this Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Nurturing the grass nurtured a successful life of local couple By Mila Besich-Lira Superior Sun On Sept. 30, 1965, Superior High School hosted its first football game on the
Memorial Football field. Prior to that year Superior High School played on a rock field. The former field was known a the “dust bowl”. Many of their competitors refused to play in Superior due to the

dangerous conditions. The current sporting facilities of the baseball and football fields were built when the district approved a $390,000 bond; $160,000 of which went towards constructing the Superior Memorial Field. The field has an interesting story that many people may not know about. In the 1960s the school district utilized a program called Neighborhood Youth Corps to work around the school with various housekeeping and groundskeeper tasks. The football field was assigned a special worker, Jesse Garcia. Coach Will Gonzalez tasked him with the job of growing the grass from seeds in time for the 1965 football season. He worked all summer to ensure that the field was ready,
removing rocks and preparing to grow the grass. The job was tedious and it required precision, knowing how much to water and mowing at just the right time so the grass could grow equally across the gridiron. It was a big job and Jesse appreciated this job. He was one of six brothers and his father was not a miner so their income was modest in comparison to others. (He is the son of Ramon and Vickie Garcia.) The job provided him a way to help his family pay for his school books, clothing and shoes, he explained. Garcia had hoped that his work on the field would help his build a relationship with Coach Garcia so he could be a member of the football team, but due to Continued on page 14

Recorder announces changes to early voting ballot FLORENCE - Recorder Virginia Ross is announcing several changes to the Pinal County Early Voting ballot materials. Voters will be mailed a yellow outer envelope containing their ballot package. Each package will contain an early ballot, an instruction sheet and a return affidavit envelope. As always, the return envelope is postage paid by the Recorder’s office. In addition, the affidavit section for the voter’s signature and affirmation has been redesigned. The Recorder’s Office heard from the voters that they wanted their signature hidden from view as it travels through the mail. The re-designed envelope will have a double fold over section to hide the voter’s signature once signed and sealed. The Recorder’s Office is also implementing intelligent bar code tracking and imaging from assembly to distribution. The advanced system will photograph each ballot package as it is created and will contain security measures allowing us to track the ballot to the voter’s mail box. These measures will allow the office to respond quickly to voter questions regarding when the ballot was mailed and when it was delivered to their mail box. The new system will be implemented for the November 2015 school district elections in Florence, Apache Junction, San Tan Valley and Coolidge and all elections for next year. The Recorder would like to remind everyone to update their voter registration information as we go into the 2015-2016 Election cycle. You may view your current registration status at https://servicearizona.com

Keep Your Eyes on the Lord and He Will Keep You Safe By Dennis Van Gorp Family Life Christian Center In Matthew 14 we read the account of Peter walking on the water. The boat was quite a ways from the shore and being hit by a severe storm. When Jesus invited Peter to walk on the water with Him, he courageously stepped out of the safety of the boat and onto the wind battered waves. This took a lot of faith and trust in the Lord. He did not throw common sense aside, but truly trusted that God would provide. When he took His eyes off
of Jesus and focused on the storm and the circumstances he was surrounded by, he began to sink into those circumstances. He stopped trusting in Jesus to keep him safe and thought about his own abilities to deal with the storm. Jesus simply said: “you have very little faith – why did you doubt?” Jesus reached out His hand and pulled Peter up out of the water to stand on top of it. Together they walked to the boat. When circumstances seem to be intent on drowning you, call upon the Lord and He will rescue you and keep you safe.

hairline fractures in his shoulder and leg, the coach would not let him on the team. Working the field would be the closest he got to being on the football team. He worked on the field until he graduated from Superior High School in 1967. He spent so much time working on the field that he gave the love of his life her first kiss on that very field. “I was a shy guy,” he said. His wife Marcella (Gonzalez) Garcia explained how the two had their first kiss on the football field. Marcella explained that she had been playing tennis with her team mate Tommy Macias; she beat him twice as she recalls. The two had bet and $2 would go to the winner; after losing the bet and the two matches, Tommy suggested that they go play football and pick up Jesse who was working at the field that spring afternoon. The three played a mock version of football using tennis balls that Marcella brought to the field. While the two boys kept running the ball, eventually Marcella got the ball and well, just like in the movies the boy tackles the girl and boom…there is the first kiss. Forty-five years later the two are still married. They have three children and 10

grandchildren. The couple married in 1970 a few years after Marcella graduated in 1968 from Superior High School. Jesse credits his work ethic to his early years of working on the football field to his career success in the Army and for the US Postal Service. Following high school, Jesse attended Arizona State CallUniversity; he graduated from ASU 363-5554 in 1972 and then entered the Army as a 2nd infantry to place your Lieutenant. the special services in the Army. He was in the 82nd Airborne, serving as a military diplomat in Guatemala where he was a teacher. “I volunteered for every position I received,” he said. The family was stationed in Guatemala, Fort Bragg and Fort Ord during their military career. “We always met up with people that were from Superior along the way,” explained Marcella. “In Fort Bragg we were able to build a strong friendship with Elizabeth Rua-
Berdine and her husband. They would come and stay with us and one time they even helped care for our children when we had to travel.” Jesse retired from the Army in 2000 and remained on reserve status until 2008 when he was officially retired from the Army. In 2013 he retired from the US Postal service. Jesse and Marcella retired to Superior and have been full time residents since 2010. They are involved with the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Superior Optimist Club.
