insects that cause sleeping sickness. Fleur told me that she was in Africa during a particularly bloody revolution back in the early 1960s. She and her family woke one morning to find their houseboy (servant) hanging from the tree in the front yard.
That was the point, she said, her father decided to move the family to the United States, a country that he considered the most civilized country in the world. Move they did. She said that President Kennedy was assassinated on one of the

Elvira Lechuga, 87, passed away Aug. 25, 2011 at her home in Kearny. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and greatgreat-grandmother. She is survived by daughters, Christina (Manny) Carrillo and
family of Kearny, Angie Lechuga of Silver City, New Mexico; and sons Pilar (Vickie) Lechuga and family of Kearny, Adolfo (Katie) Lechuga and family of Kearny. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Adolfo Lechuga Sr.; two sons, Lupe Lechuga

first days that she lived in this country. Fleur told me that she remembered asking herself was the US really more civilized? November 22, 1963 is a date that anyone alive during the time will never forget. January 28, 1986 is another date. Do you remember where you were when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing all on board? April 19, 1995 was the date of the Oklahoma City Bombing. And then comes September 11, 2001. It’s been 10 years since terrorists flew airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and crashed another in the Pennsylvania countryside, killing thousands. Do you remember where you were?
It was a Tuesday. I was putting on the finishing touches on articles for the Superior Sun and Copper Basin News and readying myself to head to Kearny to put the newspapers together. My daughter was two. I remember staring in disbelief at the television watching the planes crash into the Twin Towers, over and over again. It was hard to look away. I remember crying for those who had lost their lives in the crash and praying that those trapped would get out. I’m certain that most Americans felt the same way. I know of two groups who will be hosting September 11 memorial services. In the Copper Basin area, there will be a National Day of Service and Remembrance at the
Pinal County building in the town of Kearny at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. This is to honor those who were lost during the events of 9/11 and those who rose and serve in the communities in which we all live. In Mammoth, the local Knights of Columbus will host the annual “Blue Mass” for police, firefighters and first responders at 11 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Knights of Columbus established the “Blue Mass” after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. If you can’t attend either service, then consider flying your American Flag on Sunday. Show your patriotism and support for those who died during this most painful time in our recent history. And never forget …

Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson to entertain By Vicki Clark Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson, a well known Mariachi group from Tucson will headline the entertainment during the Town of Hayden’s annual September Fiestas Patrias this coming Saturday, Sept. 10, at Hastings Park. Also on tap to perform are Baile Folklorico Alma de
Superior, a popular dance troop of young people and Groupo Myzterio, an eightman Tejano brass band. The celebration will get underway at 2 p.m. with the opening of food and games booths, and the Mobile Visitor Center. More fun will include a Space Walk, 7-Element Obstacle Course, a Giant
Slide and DJ music. Also scheduled for 2 p.m. is a softball game with the Hayden Firefighters/ Police taking on the TriCommunity All Stars. The folklorico group will take center stage starting at 4 p.m. followed by mariachi music from 6 to 9 p.m. with a break at 7:30 p.m. for the Presentation of

the Queen. The Fiesta will end with an outdoor dance with music provided by the Tejano brass band. Los Chanquitos Feos, now in its 47th year, is a well established mariachi group and is one of the premiere youth mariachis in the nation having won many awards in conferences from the early 70’s to the present, not only in Arizona, but nationally. The musicians range in age from nine to 18 and are made up of two groups of 16. The Performing group performs 80 to 100 times each year at community events and the Apprentice group performs periodically throughout the year. The group has played for presidents of both the United States and
Mexico as well as several other dignitaries and has performed at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson on many occasions. This all began in 1964 when a young IrishAmerican priest and jazz pianist named Charles Rourke was searching for a way to keep the boys of the parish occupied during the summer. It was also at this time that Fr. Charles became acquainted with Mexican folk music known as “mariachi.” Soon the summer project ended up being Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson, the first juvenile mariachi in the nation. Los Changuitos is a nonprofit organization and all fees and earnings go into a special account for student scholarships. Students in the Performing category
are eligible to receive college scholarships upon high school graduation. Students can receive scholarship of up to $3,000 per year for up to four years. Currently up to 90 percent of the students that were involved in the Changuitos program are attending college. The group is also scheduled to perform during the Superior Fiesta next weekend and will come back to the Copper Basin for La Fiesta del Santo Niño when the Infant Jesus of Prague Parish will be celebrating it Golden Jubilee. All are invited to come out and enjoy the day at Hastings Park. No admission will be charged for any of the events. Bring your lawn chairs and umbrellas and

By Rosalind Padilla It is time to check out the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce schedule for the year. When kids start back to school we know it is time to think about the rest of the yearly activities in which we are used to participating. New to both communities is eight man foot ball, which has spiked great interest as fans are learning the rules. The Back to School campaign was a success as Mark Romo spearheaded the drive and many youngsters received a good supply. For those who felt we did not meet all of your children’s needs, we apologize. This weekend, Sept. 10 the Town of Hayden invites you to their celebration where vendors will be selling food and beverages plus there will be great entertainment in the form of softball games and musical events. The Chamber members will
be selling corn on the cob and will have a split the pot to raise funds for fireworks during Winter Wonderland. Junior Chamber sponsor Nancy Hinojos is seeking sponsorship for the 50 teenagers from Hayden and Ray High Schools who help throughout the year with all Chamber activities. Right around the corner is Oktoberfest Sept. 30-Oct. 1 featuring a car show and street fair. There is still three weeks to sign up for the salsa contest, chili cook-off, hot dog eating contest or to be a volunteer. Watch for activities planned by the Copper Community Action Board which is made up of local young adults who regularly clean up the areas where tourists are apt to visit. If we want tourists and new businesses to come to our communities we
have to keep the area pleasing to the eye. One project which is on hold but a great project is a “moonlight dinner” on the old bridge in Winkelman. Its architectural style is unique and makes for a wonderful setting for this event. Lack of volunteers caused the Oct event to be postponed. If this sounds of great interest to you, contact Martina Burnam or Gloria Ruiz. Infant of Prague Fiesta Oct. 15 is always fun and a great crowd lingers the whole day as music, children’s activities and food are available all day. People come from out of town for this event so drop by and visit old friends and make new ones. Bringing your own lawn chairs is advised if you plan to stay the whole day and into the night. Last year as with any year when Halloween falls on a Sunday we caused quite a stir by

for 2011-2012 holding Trunk and Treat on a Saturday along with the Great Pumpkin. We were not changing Halloween in any way shape or form. This year we will again have the Trunk or Treat on Alden Street Saturday, October 29 where local businesses, individual families, clubs and organizations will have games, haunted Houses, treats for all ages, along with the Great Pumpkin. Halloween is Monday, Oct 31 and door to door trick or treating is as usual. Join the Hayden Fire Department Saturday, Oct. 29, for an adult Halloween party to raise funds for their Christmas-New Year’s activities. “A Magical Christmas” is the theme for Winter Wonderland. The magic of this year’s event is the “lights” we hope to offer whether it is reviving the Memorial Love Lights on Christmas trees on Alden,
memorial luminaries surrounding Pioneer Park, electric light parade and memorial fire work shots. Dec. 3 is the date where vendors will be available for food and merchandise, games for children and of course Santa and a many light shows as possible. January and February will be the Chamber membership drive for 2012, Idol auditions and the annual Citizen of the Year recognition dinner. The theme for 2012 is “Celebrating 100 years of Statehood via Rails and Trails.” If you have stories to tell, the Copper Basin News staff will be glad to tell your stories via the printed word. This area has been traversed by military troops, Indians, bandits, violent gangs as well as those who have ranched the area making trails for those who go on weekend ATV rides or by horseback. The scenery is beautiful and stories
numerous. Plan to share what you know. Prepare with Martina Burnam for the Women’s Expo. The first Expo last year was a success and this year will be bigger and better. Hold on to your hat as you ride the Frazier amusement rides or try holding down tents when March events invade Pioneer Days, March 29-April 1. The theme Rails and Trails Prevails. The usual vendors, Queen contest, T shirt pre-sales, Carnival pre-sales, parade, entertainment, soft ball tournaments and team roping will take place along with a quilt show and back again after several years’ absence is the Arts and Crafts show. Start considering your entries for either show. Keep all these dates in mind. It takes a whole year of planning to make any of these events a success.

The year 1991 started on a Tuesday and is generally considered to be the final year of the Cold War. It is also the year the Gulf War started. Dahmer was arrested, Joseph Harris went postal and so many other events charged and changed the world in ways both positive and fear-inspiring. Calum Worthy, Erin Sanders, and Emma Roberts were among the celebrities born, while Red Grange, Michael Landon, Freddie Mercury, Gene Rodenberry, Redd Foxx and Danny Thomas passed along their way, taking a little of the sheen of the youth of this generation with them to their grave. The cost of living in 1991 was dear, with a yearly inflation rate of 4.25 percent and the average cost of a new house steadying at $120,000. Popular films included Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Silence of the Lambs, Beauty and the Beast, and Thelma and Louise. Michael Jackson was still the Prince of Pop, his sister Janet was the Queen, Guns ‘N’ Roses ran riot, Nirvana was blissful to the ear, The Clash and Metallica made quite the din and Boys turned in II Men. It was a year of change, everywhere but television, where almost all the popular shows had started long before and finished
long after 1991: X-Files, Will and Grace, Friends, The Fresh Prince of BelAir, Ally McBeal, That 70’s Show. Yep! The people who lived through that year, who took their first tender steps out of the school system and into the world of adulthood, deserve a party! Fortunately for them, they are about to get one. The classes of ‘89, ‘90, ‘92 and ‘93 have been invited to join in and of course the teachers, K-12, who helped shape the children they were and the adults they have become are welcome as well. On Friday, Sept. 23, there’ll be a parade; so line up at 3:30 p.m. in front of the West End Cafe, Airport Road; a tour of the school starts at 5:30 p.m. with a cookout/tailgate party immediately following, for both 1991 Alumni and their family, at the school cafeteria or in the parking lot; the Homecoming Game starts at 7 p.m.; and a party takes place at La Cantina immediately following the game. Please bring food or donate money for the cookout. Volunteers will do the shopping and cooking and macaroni salad will be provided. Also, please

Georgie Digs ... By Georgie Wood (ggannwood@yahoo.com) It might have been in the Fall of 1988 when the Nature Conservancy (TNC) had their first Aravaipa Fundraising Barbeque at TNC’s WesCar Ranch. Cliff and I had been persuaded by Tom Collazo, Director of TNC’s Aravaipa Preserve, to barbeque the donated beef for the event in a newlydug pit. At our downstream property, we had a bricklined barbeque pit and we had always been successful when cooking meat in it, but when we opened this newly-dug, unlined pit, the pit was very damp and the meat hadn’t cooked properly. The Jep Whites and others had also helped with the food cooking and all we could do was to start up some grills to try to finish cooking the meat. That beef was terrible, and besides feeling embarrassed, I felt sorry for the many who had paid to attend the barbeque. TNC’s “western style” barbeque in 1990 at Philip DeNormandie’s Trails End Ranch was done by others (mostly on a large grill, I think), and there was an auction of various donated items, and western music to dance to. We really
enjoyed it. The invitations, which had featured a watercolor of mine, stated that the tickets were $75. per person paid in advance and the proceeds would be used for the stewardship of TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. Of course, this took place before Tom and Debbie Collazo left TNC’s Wes-Car Ranch, after which there was no TNC personnel living on westend Aravaipa Creek. It might have been shortly before this time when a hiker was bitten by a rattlesnake by Cave Canyon in the Wilderness Area. I was told that the group of people who were with him didn’t attempt to carry him out, but after the news got out there were numerous people waiting at the Trails End Ranch when the sick man was packed out after dark. That was done by him riding in front of Cliff’s and my son, Neal, on a horse, with Neal holding on to him while holding an intravenous drip and handling his horse as BLM Ranger Andrew “Andy” Wigg led the way by flashlight. An ambulance was waiting at the Trails End Ranch, and a Medi-Vac helicopter picked him up. See Georgie, Page 7

Different look for Pinal County tax bills in 2011 FLORENCE – It’s not everyone’s favorite correspondence to arrive in the mail, but Pinal County’s property tax bill will have a new look to it when it arrives in mid-September. Instead of the somewhat bulky property tax bill that had been sent out for the last several years, the new notice will be letter sized and have blue highlights. “The new tax notice is much skinnier,” said Treasurer Dodie Doolittle. “It will come in a regular envelope that will have the words: ‘Real Property Tax Notice Enclosed’ printed on the front.” The reason for the change was simple – the equipment used to print the larger sized tax bills is no longer operational. Treasurer Doolittle and her staff worked with the printer to come up with a letter-sized document that would include the same information as the older bill. “We’re pretty happy with the new design,” Doolittle said. “The only real changes the property owner will see are the school primary and
secondary tax rates will be further explained on the back page of the notice. The bill will now only have two coupons for payment instead of three. The first coupon can be used for the first half payment or full year payment” The new bills will be printed and mailed out Sept. 8 and 9. The notice should arrive the following week. Treasurer Doolittle advised that property owners could receive their tax notices by email if they desire. “It would save them time and save us money,” Doolittle said. “It’s a very simple thing to do.” To receive your property tax notice by email, submit a change of address on the Treasurer website www. pinalcountyaz.gov/treasurer or provide an email address on the back of the payment coupon. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: How much does Pinal County get out of my tax bill? A: Did you know that Pinal County taxes make up only 25 to 30 percent of your tax bill?

earlier established their individual homes close to their parents’ home, and that beautiful farm had become a very busy place with their combined six children; Darren, Danny, Gail, Natalie, Jacob, and Jennifer, who I hope I have correctly listed in order of their births between 1970 and 1979. I’m sure all those Young children have many good memories of their childhoods along Aravaipa Creek, just as Cliff’s and my children do. Speaking of children, Neal said I should correct a mistake I made about our bulldozer! It was a KO Allis Chalmers bulldozer, NOT a KO Allis Chalmers Caterpillar, and I did make the earlier mistake of saying it was a 1937 model instead of a 1935 model. There may be some more, so you better keep reading, Neal!
Continued from Page 6 That helicopter was piloted by Aravaipa Creek neighbor, Dan Jones, who was living with his wife, Sherrie Brasell, on the hillside part of their property that was just upstream of the Young’s Mountcrest Ranch. At a higher level on that hill was where Jerry and Vera Iser had bought their property in 1979, and had a new manufactured home moved there for their retirement home. Both of those properties had a view of the creek below and of the old Aravaipa school house on the south side of the creek. Lester, Harold, and Lemuel “Lemmie” Young, three married sons of Burl and Louise Young of the Mountcrest Ranch, had
The remainder of your tax bill is made up of taxes assessed by schools districts, Central Arizona College, fire districts and other special taxing districts. Q: Did the Supervisors raise our tax rate? A: The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to keep the
tax rate steady at $3.99 per $100.00 of assessed valuation. Q: I heard the Assessor will include an affidavit asking if this home is owner occupied or vacant land. Is that true? A: Not this time. Per a new law passed by the Arizona Legislature, the Assessor’s Office will be sending out an affidavit with assessed
valuation notices starting in March 2012. The affidavit will ask if properties are owner occupied. The new law seeks to ensure that all class 3 properties are owner occupied or rented to a qualified family member, as defined by A.R.S. § 4212053(2. This law goes into effect in 2013. Q: How can I pay my tax bill?
A: Tax Payments will be accepted in the form of cash, check, money order, cashier’s check, e-mail, or electronic wire transfers. Please contact the Pinal County Treasurer at (520) 866-6425 for wire instructions. Q: How much of my tax bill goes to state cost shifts? A: Out of the $3.99 tax rate, nearly 24 cents goes to fund those cost shifts.

Lobos overrun by Wildkats 40-20 By Nolberto Waddell The Duncan High School Wildkat football team came into Lobo Stadium with a number one ranking in Division Six football and showed why they are deserving of the ranking. Behind a physically big offensive line and with quick running backs, the Wildkats quickly took control of the game against the Lobos. Running from the single wing formation, one Wildkat runner did all the damage. Wildkat number 25, Cale Merrell, completely dominated running for five offensive touchdowns and scored a sixth on a pass interception. The Duncan team won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Wildkats took the kick-off at the 16 yard line returning the football to the 42 yard line and behind the big offensive line marched down the field on five runs with Merrell taking the football over the goal line from seven yards out for his first score. The two point try was stopped by the Lobos giving Duncan a 0 to 6 lead at 10:04 of the first period. The Lobos took the kickoff at the 35 yard line on the out of bounds kick but could not move the football, punting. Duncan took the football at the 15 yard line and were on the march again with Merrell doing most of the damage finally taking the football over the goal line from 40 yards out for his second touchdown. The Wildkats were successful on the two point play to take a 0 to 14 lead at 6:31 of the first period. Hayden took over on there 40 yard line after a 20 yard return by Eric Rivera on the kick-off. The Lobos started to move the football but a holding penalty negated their progress forcing another punt. The punt by Dylan Smith covered 48 yards stopping at the Duncan
12 yard line. The Lobo defense came up strong stopping the Widkat runner for no gain on the first play and on the second play Thomas Cabrera stepped in front of a Wildkat pass intercepting at the 24 yard line. The Lobos got to the 12 yard line on a run and an 8 yard pass to Aaron Lagunas and from there Adrian Ochoa bulled his way into the end zone for a Lobo touchdown. The two point try was stopped with the score now 6 to 14 at 1:22 of the first quarter. The quarter ended with the Lobo defense forcing a Wildkat punt. Lobo Eric Rivera returned the punt 25 yards to the Duncan 31 yard line and the local boys were marching down field getting a first and goal from the nine yard line but disaster struck the Lobos. Attempting a pass, Lobo receiver Eric Rivera slipped and fell giving Duncan’s Merrell a clear shot at the football returning the football 95 yards for his third touchdown of the game. The two point play was stopped giving Duncan a 6 to 20 lead at 9:19 of the second quarter. A disheartened Lobo team took the kick-off but were unable to move the football punting it back to the Wildkats. A short 24 yard punt gave the Wildkats the ball at the 46 yard line of Hayden. The Wildkats struck quick. On the second play, Merrell was at it again taking the football over the goal line from 42 yards out with the two point play good for a 6 to 28 Wildkat lead at 6:37 of the second quarter. The Lobo coaching staff would not allow the Lobos to give up. They took the kick-off and marched down the field behind the running of Adrian Ochoa and Aaron Lagunas getting to the seven yard line and a first down. Cabrera went back to pass and finding
no receiver open tucked the football in his arms and bulled his way into the end zone for a Lobo touchdown. The two point play was stopped with the score now 12 to 28 and time running out of first half play. The Lobos took the second half kick-off and behind the running of Eric Rivera and Thomas Cabrera the Lobos went on a time consuming drive eating up most of the third quarter clock finally scoring on a one yard dive by Cabrera to cut the Duncan lead to 20 to 28 after the two point play was good on a pass from Cabrera to Roman Padilla at 2:09 of the second period. It did not faze the Wildkats. They took over at the 35 yard line when the kick-off sailed out of bounds. After a seven yard gain, Merrell was at it again taking the snap racing around the end on a 58 yard run for his fifth touchdown of the game. The failed two point try gave Duncan a 20 to 34 lead with 1:21 left on the third period clock. The deflated Lobo team could not move the football on their next possession punting the football as time ran out on the third quarter clock. The Lobo defense would not allow the Wildkats any yards on their next possession forcing a punt. Hayden took over and started to drive down field. The Wildkat defense stiffened forcing two incomplete pass attempts and a quarterback sack for a fourth and 15 yards to go. Cabrera went back to pass finding Roman Padilla for a 12 yard completion. But the Lobos needed 15 yards, giving up the football on downs. The Wildkats took over at their 36 yard line, marched to the Lobo 35 yard line and from there Merrell was at it again scoring his sixth touchdown of the game
on a 35 yard run. The two point play was stopped by the Lobos with the score
now 20 to 40 with 5:48 left in the game. The Wildkats kicked off
with Aaron Lagunas taking the football on a 30 yard See Lobos, Page 11

Bearcats learning patience By John Hernandez The Ray Bearcats are now a 1A school and for the first time in their history are playing eight man football. They have a new head coach in Willie Jordan although he has been on the coaching staff for several years. Jordan teaches Team Leadership, Physical Education, Film Studies and the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. He coached Pop Warner
Rams, Marine Corps and now the Bearcats. Jordan is a retired Marine from Tucson where he played football and graduated from Pueblo High School in 1979. He is a 2006 graduate from the University of Arizona. The other coaches are Coach Herb White and Coach Cruz. Coach White graduated from the University of Arizona and teaches English. He is also the baseball coach at Ray. Coach Cruz is also the
wrestling coach at Ray. The coaching staff will have their work cut out for them this year. The Ray Bearcats football team is young and inexperienced. They have one senior on the team. Only eight players from last year’s team, which finished with a record of three wins and seven losses, return. Only two starters return. The top players returning are running back Jacob Wernett and
two linemen Alex Carrera and Daniel Harmon. Carrera will play wide receiver this year as he has improved his speed over the summer. The only senior and one of the team leaders is returning lineman Chris Estrada. Destry Yocum, a freshman, will start at quarterback. The rest of the team is made up of young student athletes. Coach Jordan said before last Friday’s game, “Our team is not there
yet, but we are getting there as we work hard to become strong mentally and physically. We are undersized, young, not too fast but willing to learn eight man football. With only 23 players, the biggest question will be; can we compete with stronger and bigger teams who have been in eight man football for years? As a coach in a rebuilding year, we will be able to understand that success is not overnight, but it takes
patience and time. Our focus may just be having a team to compete with as we grow into eight man football.” The Bearcats lost to Mogollon 20 to 76 last week. If it is any consolation the Heber Mogollon team is ranked second in the state by the Arizona Republic in Division VI. Ray will meet the Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind in Tucson on Friday.

Lobo defensive back Rodney Ortiz had a busy night leading the Lobo defense with 11 tackles. Dylan Smith and Adrian Ochoa were credited with eight tackles apiece. Thomas Cabrera had four tackles to go with his pass interception and Francisco Moreno also had four tackles and recovered a fumble. Roman Padilla had three tackles with Robert Sandoval getting two tackles. Eric Rivera, Gabriel Encinas and Antonio Medina each got credit for one tackle apiece. The Lobo offense put up some good numbers
getting 275 yards of total offense on 61 plays from scrimmage for three touchdowns, suffered a fumble they recovered and the one interception that was returned for a touchdown. The Lobos had 219 rushing yards on 46 plays and had 56 yards on five pass completions on 15 pass attempts by Thomas Cabrera. Cabrera
added 87 rushing yards on 16 carries scoring two touchdowns. Aaron Lagunas caught two passes for 10 yards, Adrian Ochoa had two receptions for 31 yards and Roman Padilla had two receptions for 15 yards, one on a two point attempt. Eric Rivera rushed nine times for 44 yards fumbling once.
Adrian Ochoa had 53 yards on 12 runs with Aaron Lagunas adding 35 yards on nine runs. It was a tough loss for the Lobos but they will regroup and come out fighting in their next outing, a trip to the White Mountains to take on the Wildcats of Cibecue High School on Saturday, Sept. 10, with a 1 p.m. kick-off.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) is proposing to obtain right of way (ROW) for portions of electrical line located on Bureau of Land management (BLM) land currently operating without a ROW from the BLM in Pinal and Gila counties, Arizona. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to address the potential environmental consequences of proposed actions as well as solicit comments from local, state and federal agencies, Indian tribes, and interested members of the public during their decision-making process. A Draft EA has been prepared to address potential impacts resulting from development of the project. Project Description Existing infrastructure along 14 portions of 12.5 kilovolt (kV) distribution and 69kV transmission line requires new poles, insulators, and access road construction and maintenance in order to prevent future disruption of electrical service to SCIP customers. The portions of electrical line total approximately 13 miles in length are are located entirely within the BLM’s land jurisdiction. The individual power lines are located north of the City of Casa Grande, in the City of Coolidge, in the Town of Florence, between the Florence-Kelvin Highway and the Gila River, and along State Routes 77 and 177. EA Comment Period As part of the NEPA process, you are invited to provide written comments on this proposed action and on the Draft EA. No public meetings are currently planned. Lady Lobos victorious over Bearcats, Braves By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lady Lobo volleyball teams came out strong in their first two games of the season putting two wins on their record defeating their rivals, the Ray High Lady Bearcats with the JV team winning in two sets and the varsity going the full five sets for the win and coming back to take a sweep of the Lady Braves of San Carlos High School in their next outing. The Lady Lobo JV came on strong behind the serving of Karina Serrano to easily defeat the Bearcat JV in the first set with a 25 to 12 score. The second set was more exciting. The Bearcat JV took a 10 to 15 lead but Kyana Garcia had the Lobos ahead after her serve was broken scoring six points for a 17 to 15 Lobo lead. The Bearcats came back to take a 17 to 19 lead but the Lady Lobos buckled down to pull out a 25 to 23 score to take the match two sets to none. The Lady Lobo varsity came out strong in their match against the Lady Bearcats behind the serving of Melissa Islava and Demitria Boltarez to easily defeat the Lady Bearcats in the first set 25 to 15. The Lady Bearcats would not go down easily coming back to hand the Lady Lobos a 24 to 26 overtime loss in the second set to even the match at one set apiece. The defeat must have angered the Lady Lobos as they came soaring back behind the serving of Casie Smith, Lupita Calzadillas and Demitria Boltarez and the great play of the entire Lobo team to hand the Lady Bearcats a 25 to 16 defeat in the third set to take a two set to one
lead. The Lady Bearcats came back strong easily defeating the Lobos in the fourth set with a 13 to 25 score to even he match at two sets apiece. The fifth set started out exciting with the score 5 to 4 Lobos after two servers went to the line for each team. It would be as close as the Bearcats would get to the Lobos. Demitria Boltarez went to the service line and produced six service points to take a commanding 12 to 5 lead on their way to a 15 to 7 win in the fifth set to take the match over the Bearcats three sets to two for their first win of the season. The Lady Braves of San Carlos High School were on the Lobo court on Thursday, Sept. 1, with the Lobo teams sweeping the Lady Braves in both matches. The Lady Lobo JV had little trouble with the Lady Brave JV. The first set was a bit exciting with the score 15 to 14 with Devin Estrada heading to the service line. Estrada quickly put the set in the books for the Lobos serving eight service points to give the Lobos a 24 to 14 lead finally winning with a 25 to 15 score. The second set was all Lady Lobos. The Lady Braves would serve first getting one point but it would be as close as they would get to the Lobos. Laniey Lopez stepped to the service line and hit 13 service points to put the Lobos ahead 14 to 1 when her serve was finally broken. Each team kept breaking each other’s service until Marlisse See Lady Lobos, Page 13

Lady Lobos
Continued from Page 12 Perez went to the service line and hit for four service points to give the Lady Lobo JV a 21 to five lead on their way to a lopsided 25 to 8 win over the Braves for the two set sweep and their second win of the season. The Lady Lobo varsity came out strong in their match against the Lady Braves varsity easily defeating them in three sets. The Lady Lobos put on an exhibition on spiking in the first set to defeat the Braves 25 to 16 to take a one set lead. The second set was the same as the first with the entire Lobo team putting on a great show of volleyball with their great team play and spiking and great defense to hand the Braves a 25 to 14 defeat taking a two set to none lead in the match. The third set was more exciting. The Lady Braves took a 9 to 14 lead after the first round of serving and saw their lead cut to 12 to 14 on Cassie Smith’s service. The Lady Braves built the lead 12 to 17 on their next service and soon saw that lead evaporate when Melissa Islava went to the service line and hit, with the help of her teammates, for seven service points to give Hayden a 20 to 17 lead. The Lobo defense kept breaking the Braves service finally handing the Lady Braves a 25 to 20 third set defeat to take the match three sets to non r for their second win of the season. The Lady Lobos will be busy this week plying three matches in three days. The Lady Lobos return to their home court on Sept. 7 to take on the Superior High School Lady Panthers and will board the bus again on Sept. 8 traveling to Miami High School to take on the always tough Lady Vandal volleyball team. Action will start at 5 p.m. for Superior and Miami.
