And when you get back home, stay in touch with your new favorite community by reading Planet Jackson Hole online. We’ll see you again soon!
Getting Western in Jackson Hole Jackson Hole is still the “Last and Best of the Old West.” Flying into the little town nestled in the mountains it’s easy to see how the “Hole” got tacked onto “Jackson” by early trappers and mountain men. As soon as you arrive in Jackson, whether by airplane or Airstream, it will be abundantly clear the Western way of life is alive and well in the Hole. From the old boardwalk sidewalks of Jackson’s downtown to the cowboys and cowgirls you’ll see walking them (maybe with their spurs a-jingling), an encounter with Jackson Hole’s hisS U M M E R 2 0 1 5 • T H E H O L E C A L E N D A R .CO M
tory is a daily occurrence. Want to dive in a little deeper? Let’s start with an old-fashioned cattle drive. We’ll skip the hot, dusty trail and head right for supper. The Bar J Wranglers feed and entertain hungry folks at their nightly chuckwagon dinner in much the same way punchers would relax at the end of a long day moving cows northward to Wyoming from Texas. The Bar J ranch hands feed up to 750 guests nightly in about 20 minutes! But it’s the music most people come for. The floorshow is one of the finest examples of Western music anywhere in the U.S. At the Bar T5 they do much the same but you’ll ride into a rustic camp on the cook’s wagon pulled by a team of horses. If you’re up for it why not saddle up and head out into the wilds of Wyoming on your own horse? Jackson Hole is famous for its dude ranches, so much so that the cast and crew of ABC’s Modern Family came to the valley to shoot their Season 3 premier episode “Dude Ranch” in 2011. Some ranches require a minimum week’s stay. Others offer day riding and a few stables will rent you a trusty steed by the hour. When you think of the West, you think of rodeo. Things get wild and wooly every Wednesday and Saturday night at the Jackson Hole Rodeo. The action is nonstop and family-friendly as cowboys and cowgirls from around the region compete for cash prizes, buckles and saddles. Bull riding, team roping, barrel racing – JH Rodeo has it all. The fairgrounds is also home to the Wrangler team roping every September. It’s a huge gathering of lariat swingers from all over the nation. The event takes place in the Heritage Arena at the fairgrounds. Look for the giant indoor riding facility; it’ll be surrounded by horse trailers. Town Square is the place to be every day except Sunday when the longest-running shootout in America takes place promptly at 6 p.m. The cast of the Jackson Hole Playhouse reenacts a new show every summer that includes high drama and abundant gunplay. Fear not, the players use only blanks but it will feel as real as it was 200 years ago. And finally, holidays come alive with the addition of authentic mountain men, horseback riders and horse-drawn wagons for Jackson’s Old West Days (Memorial Day) and Fourth of July celebrations. Both events include a Western parade and plenty of hats, boots, and chaps.
Music to your ears! Jackson Hole has no shortage of concerts, festivals and nightly music entertainment. Whether you are looking to grab a drink
with friends at a local saloon, catch a classical symphonic performance, or score tickets to a national act in concert – Jackson has it all. Bluegrass fans have flocked to Grand Targhee every summer in August, making the Bluegrass Festival one of the most popular in the country. The biggest names in the genre play the outdoor amphitheater that looks as beautiful as it sounds. Targhee Fest in July is another Targhee music festival that takes place at the majestic high-alpine setting at 7,800 feet. This summer’s 11th annual fest features the hottest stars on the Americana music scene. Grand Teton Music Festival (GTMF) is a summer tradition in Teton Village. Some of the world’s top symphony musicians and conductors grace the Walk Festival Hall stage for unforgettable performances of classical music. These events sell out fast, so score your tickets early! Dozens of musicians have called the Center Stage at Center for the Arts (CFA) their favorite place to play for the pristine acoustics and intimate setting. CFA boasts a star-studded lineup this summer from the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin to rock legend John Hiatt with Taj Mahal. You’re sure to find something that pleases your eyes and ears at CFA. If you’re looking for up-and-coming artists, check out Music on Main. The concert series is chocked-full of new and exciting artists playing outdoors on Main Street in Victor, Idaho every Thursday night. JacksonHoleLive is another concert series closer to home. All shows take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Snow King Ball Park. Sundays belong to the West Bank (the outlying area west of town). Concert on the Commons is a regular outdoor show at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village. Another Sunday hotspot is the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson. Sunday night “church” features the longest continuously playing house band in the nation. For nearly 50 years, the Stagecoach Band has been serving up two-step and swing music for a devoted crowd of locals, but they always save a warm welcome for new faces. On any given night in Jackson, you can always see a country-rock band at the world-famous Cowboy Bar or enjoy the floorshow at the Silver Dollar Bar at The Wort Hotel. For the younger visitor, Jackson has several top DJ’s spinning dance music late into the night at more than a few clubs. Want to join in? The Hootenanny at Dornans is the place to be Monday nights as amateur musicians sign up for a two- or three-song set at the long-running Hoot, which celebrates its 1,000th show this summer on September 21.
The Art of the draw Jackson’s Fall Arts Festival, now celebrating its 31st year is widely recognized as one of the top cultural events in the Rocky Mountain West. Thousands of art enthusiasts are drawn to the event that runs September 9 - 20. The gathering features art and artists, of course, but also wine tastings, auctions, and the Western Design Conference, where designers of all types exhibit their wares. The Art Fair is another place to find that rare sculpture, painting, or dazzling piece of jewelry. Some 170 international, S U M M E R 2 0 1 5 • T H E H O L E C A L E N D A R .CO M
national and local artists set up shop in Miller Park in downtown Jackson for two weekends each summer in July and August. MC Presents is another show featuring art and antiques from around the world. They’ll be at The Virginian and Teton Village on select weekends in July and August. Ready for more art? Jackson Hole has dozens of galleries and art spaces sure to keep the shopper or browser satisfied. Most every shop will ship your purchase back home so don’t worry about filling up the RV. You’re sure to find something truly unique while here in Jackson. The National Museum of Wildlife Art is a “don’t miss” stop on your “To Do” list. The state-of-the-art, 51,000-square-foot building opened in 1994 and comprises no less than 14 distinctive galleries. There is always something amazing on exhibit in addition to the museum’s permanent collection of more than 5,000 catalogued pieces by more than 100 distinguished artists. Prefer your art on the stage? Jackson Hole’s Center for the Arts houses Dancers’ Workshop (DW), a nonprofit organization teaching and offering the best in performance art. DW brings contemporary dance to Wyoming on a regular basis as well as performances this summer by New York City Ballet MOVES (July) and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (August). The Off Square Theatre Company will present Thin Air Shakespeare on the Great Lawn at CFA in July. How about a night on little Broadway with a Jackson Hole rendition of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? The Jackson Hole Playhouse & Saddle Rock Saloon features nightly (dark on Sundays) performances of the smash Broadway musical along with dinner before the show. By the way, the playhouse is also Jackson’s oldest building at more than a century old!
Get outdoors Few places on earth boast the stunning scenery of Jackson Hole and the surrounding national parks. Jackson Hole is known for its skiing, of course, but would you be surprised to learn that it’s the summer season that really packs ‘em in? About 2.5 million visitors pass through Jackson every summer on their way to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Yellowstone has worldwide appeal as a “must see” destination when in the American West. The country’s first national park is known for its incredible array of geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles. It’s 3,500 square miles, combined with the adjoining Grand Teton National Park, is also home to unmatched wildlife viewing. Take along a GaperGuide – a GPS self-guided audio tour companion for your vehicle – for an informative enhancement to your park trip. It’s not unusual to spot wolves, bears, bison, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, coyotes, foxes, and much more. Keep your eyes on the sky, too. Western Wyoming has plenty of bald eagles, golden eagles, red tail hawks, osprey, and many other birds of prey. Never mind looking at the sky. Why not join our winged creatures for a real bird’s eye view? Jackson Hole is a great place to paraglide. If you need your airborne adventure a little tamer, how about a hot air balloon ride to see how the valley lays out? A trip to
the top of Rendezvous Mountain via the ski tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is also a great way to beat the heat and catch a breathtaking glimpse of the valley from 10,450 feet. You may not realize it but Jackson Hole is home to some of the finest golf courses in the country. Choose from at least five area courses for a scenic and relaxing round of golf. We have putt-putt golf, too. There’s also rock climbing, kayaking, bungee jumping, tennis, and lots more to choose from in the great outdoors here. The Jackson Hole lifestyle is an active one; remember to stay hydrated at this higher elevation. The mountains and valleys provide endless hiking, biking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities. And Jackson Hole’s rivers and streams are a great place to cool off on a hot summer day, whether it’s a white water rafting trip down the famous Snake River or a world class fly fishing adventure. Our favorite outing? Grab a ferry ride across Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Once at the other side, at the base of the Tetons, take the short hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Picnic at one of the many spots along the way as the whole valley spreads out beneath you. Always remember, you’re in bear country out here. Hike in groups, restrain dogs and make noise as you go. Don’t harass wildlife and always respect their territory. They were here first. Keep a close watch on your campfires, too. Make sure they are dead out and cold to the touch before you abandon them. Jackson Hole is one of the last truly wild places on earth and we like it that way. Take only photos, leave only footprints. PJH
