East Ward Primary School

“I am so happy that my child is at the BEST school in Bury, with wonderful staff who care and make school fun.” Parent

Welcome to our brilliant, caring, progressive, inclusive, responsible, happy school. We have built a very special community at East Ward Community Primary School, to ensure that our children receive the care and attention they need to become enthusiastic learners with inquisitive minds, and responsible individuals. Whether through our enriched curriculum, our emphasis on nurturing individual abilities, our fantastic links with the school community, our stimulating environment, or our extra curricular activities, East Ward gives every child the best educational start, and a life long love of learning. Our children are enthusiastic and take pride in their learning, and they strive to reach their potential. They are treated as individuals; we know them all well and work with each one to find their strengths and talents to build on, and nurture their abilities in areas where they are less confident. Our aim is for every single child to leave us with sound literacy and numeracy skills, a passion for discovering new experiences, and a desire to make a positive contribution to their community. We want you to enjoy being part of our close community, and we know we can’t provide such a rich and caring community without your aupport. Our partnership gives the children of our school positive role models, access to invaluable resources, and a feeling of belonging. We hope that this prospectus gives you a flavour of what our special and happy school is all about. Please do come and speak to us if you would like any further information.

We strive to be an inclusive school which aims to provide high quality teaching and learning in a safe, secure, stimulating and nurturing environment. Staff and pupils enjoy mutual respect and trust, and strong foundations are laid for our children’s future education and adult life.

Learning and teaching We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, where learning and fun go hand in hand to develop every child’s individual learning experience. Our curriculum is carefully planned to challenge, engage and motivate every single child, and we plan and structure learning to stretch children’s academic, physical, social and creative achievements and to build their confidence. Children are supported through a variety of teaching styles and groupings, which allow teachers to set ambitious and thought provoking work based on individual ability. A core aim is to raise standards for all of our children, whatever their starting point. Each child’s development is closely monitored, and parents are informed of progress and achievements, as well as any areas of concern. Providing new experiences is integral to the way we teach, and children have access to, for example, wireless laptops and iPads, alongside our ICT suite (remove please-we don’t have one anymore); themed days as part of our creative curriculum; and regular open lessons where children and parents are able to work together We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum which gives children the opportunity to think creatively. We put a strong

emphasis on the key skills in English and Maths as well as developing potential in sport and the arts. We strongly believe in the value of day and residential trips and in-school events.

Inclusivity and pastoral care Sometimes children or their families need extra help to make sure that they feel happy, secure and successful. We have a team of adults here at East Ward, who are tasked with organising and

SEN provision Every child at East Ward is valued and we want to make sure that all make progress and have access to a relevant, broad and balanced curriculum. We are committed to meeting the needs of those pupils with special educational needs so far as is reasonably practicable and compatible with the provision of the efficient education of other pupils. We identify and address any special educational requirements as early as possible, and work with parents and other agencies to implement an individualised education programme.

‘‘The activities that the school organise do so much to help make the children’s school days happy and productive’’ Parent

We have a dedicated SEN coordinator who plays a key role in raising attainment for children with SEN, and who works closely with staff, parents and carers and other agencies.

Beyond the curriculum Our curriculum opens up our children’s eyes and horizons to the endless possibilities that a good education gives to them, but we know that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We offer many activities designed to enhance our children’s learning; from our very own radio station – Willow FM – where children can be a DJ for a lunchtime, or our peer mentor scheme where our older pupils mentor their younger counterparts, to taking part in the school choir, and Chatterbox - our new recreational outdoor space designed to promote speaking and listening. Our before and after school clubs give children the opportunity to take part in sport classes and activities, and may include football, netball, art club, chess, cricket, cheerleading and craft.
