Day One: February 17th, 2014 The First Nations LNG Summit is designed to provide First Nations leaders with the ideas, knowledge and tools needed to ensure communities understand and can make informed decisions about potential LNG developments in BC. Day one is focussed on gaining practical experience, with an ‘LNG 101’, followed by local tours. Days two and three begin with keynote speakers and panel discussions, followed by practical workshops. During each session, there are five workshops to choose from, allowing delegates to gain knowledge that they need. Each workshop session is limited to a maximum of 50 people, with places allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. The evenings are focused on networking, socializing, and inspiring talks followed by a thoughtprovoking performance from Treaty 8 community members. 8:00 am – 9:00 am

Mona Polacca is a Native American spiritual Elder from Arizona. She has worked to further social justice for indigenous people from an early age. She is an author in the field of social sciences, has held posts of responsibility as Treasurer for her tribe, [3] and has served on several committees for Indigenous Peoples within the United [4] Nations. She is widely known for her "leadership in the Native American [1] revitalization movement." In recent years, Mona has gained international recognition for her work as one of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers -- a group of spiritual Elders, medicine women and wisdom keepers founded in 2004. 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about practical business opportunity assessment tools and receive an overview of all the necessary pieces of a successful business development structure and operation (e.g. legal and management structures, key management processes, roles and responsibilities). This workshop is ideal for First Nation leaders, managers, and staff interested in economic development and business. Speakers/ Facilitators: Michael Bonshor (MNP), JP Gladu (Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business) – to introduce role of CCAB (D) Treaty & Aboriginal Rights: This informative discussion will review the legal distinctions between Treaty rights, Aboriginal rights and Aboriginal title, provide participants with an overview of the historical and constitutional basis for the negotiation of Treaty 8, and identify the key principles adopted by the courts in the interpretation of historic treaties. The Crown’s right under Treaty 8 to “take up” land “from time to time” for “settlement, mining, lumbering, trading or other purposes” will be examined in relation to the legal concepts of “fiduciary duty”, “honour of the Crown” and “reconciliation”.
