waterfront welcome
Waterfront welcome Visiting cruise ship passengers will get a warm welcome to Port Phillip thanks to a new volunteer program funded by Council. The Waterfront Welcomers program, led by Inner South Community Health, will greet cruise ship passengers and promote local attractions. The volunteers are based at Station Pier in the new Information and Heritage Hub created with the Port of Melbourne Corporation, Port Melbourne Business Association and Port Melbourne Neighbourhood Centre. Inner South Community Health’s Danielle McCaffrey said most of the 40 volunteers are Port Melbourne residents, and many have been cruise passengers. ‘The volunteers are very proud of their city and its heritage. They have local knowledge as well as empathy with the cruise passengers. ‘They are looking forward to helping passengers pursue their interests locally, everything from heritage walks to shopping for keepsakes.’ Each year about 180,000 cruise ship passengers, 20,000 crew and 330,000 Spirit of Tasmania passengers pass through the Port Melbourne waterfront. BE A VOLUNTEER WELCOMER Danielle McCaffrey, Inner South Community Health, 9525 1300 The City of Port Phillip respectfully acknowledges the Yalukit Wilam Clan of the Boon Wurrung. We pay our respect to their Elders, both past and present. We acknowledge and uphold their continuing relationship to this land.

Time for Changing Places Council backs calls for the St Kilda foreshore to get a State Government funded Changing Places style toilet. Changing Places toilets are different to standard accessible toilets. They have more space, a ceiling tracking hoist system and a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench. These facilities better meet the needs of people with a severe or profound disability and their carers.
Lisa Davis, Elwood resident and MS St Kilda Peer Support Group president, supports the call for State Government funding of a Changing Places facility at St Kilda. ‘Facilities like these can give people and carers more freedom.’
Changing Places facilities are considered to be above and beyond the current legislated requirement within each state and territory, and are provided in addition to the required accessible toilets. SUPPORT THE CALL changingplaces.org.au/campaign-st-kilda-foreshore Council is preparing a foreshore disability access map and information for residents and visitors. Compiled for the first time, this map will include the location of accessible parking spaces, level access open air shower facilities and toilets, as well as access to piers, jetties and the sand. From the Mayor Welcome to the summer edition of Divercity. I hope you are able to get out and enjoy some of what’s on offer this summer in our beautiful municipality, whether it’s one of the foreshore events, a movie at Gasworks backyard cinema, a nature walk along the Elwood canal or taking in a concert at ANAM. Congratulations to our 2014 Citipower Port Phillip Business Excellence award winners. These local businesses contribute greatly to the vibrancy, employment and economic success of our municipality.
Bay support program gets awards The Port Phillip EcoCentre has won the Premier’s Recognition Award, as well as the Cleaner Yarra and Bay Award at the 2014 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.
‘Litter is a pervasive issue that anyone can unders tand and do something about,’ says Neil Bl ak EcoCentre director e, and Baykeeper, seen he re collecting the Premier’s award.
The awards recognise the EcoCentre’s ‘Life Support for the Bay’ program, which includes a penguin protection program during the St Kilda Harbour development, scientific monitoring of litter and publication of the results, and extensive collaborations with community groups, schools and government.
Neil Blake, director of the EcoCentre and Port Phillip Baykeeper told Divercity that ‘Life Support for the Bay’ is a call to citizens to be aware of the critical relationship between the catchments and Port Phillip Bay. ‘What happens in the suburbs impacts on the bay. The choices people make in waste disposal, transport, horticulture, pet waste and energy all have an effect on waterways.’
Scenes from the moving commemoration of troops leaving Princes Pier 100 years ago.
It was a privilege to attend Princes Pier, Port Melbourne recently for the 100 year commemoration of the embarkation of Victoria’s first convoy in World War 1. This important historical moment and place was commemorated in a moving tribute contributed to by federal, state and local governments. From all the Councillors and myself we wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
Other local winners at the awards included Seedlings, a council project (including Port Phillip) to introduce sustainability into preschools, and Fieldtech Solutions, a Port Melbourne company that produces biodegradable soil testing equipment.
Be a saint with litter ‘As the bayside club, St Kilda is dedicated to doing the right thing and looking after the bay,’ says Saints forward Daniel Markworth. Join Daniel and his teammates at community events on the foreshore over summer. Port Phillip rangers will also be out patrolling to help spread the word about taking care of our public spaces. Join us by disposing of rubbish correctly. Visit saints.com.au for further information. And remember, anything you drop can make its way into our bay.

A friendly wave in a heatwave Heatwaves can be dangerous. As part of Council’s Linking Neighbours program, heatwave volunteers call to check in with older people who have asked to be contacted during extreme hot weather. Neil Imlach, a member of the Older Person’s Consultative Committee, has been a heatwave volunteer for the past four years, making sure that others are coping with the weather.
Hot tips
Drink plenty o f water. Stay out of th e sun. Look after yo urself and others.
Renata Bosi-Corsini, a resident who receives calls from Neil during a heatwave, says that although the warm weather in Melbourne is often quite pleasant, there are times when it gets worryingly hot. ‘Older people can sometimes feel a bit isolated, so it’s nice to be remembered,’ she said. If you would like to know more about the Linking Neighbours program, become a heatwave volunteer or sign up for the Seniors Register, call ASSIST on 9209 6777.
