Poppies recall those who fell In November, 914 poppies will be displayed across our town halls as part of our World War I centenary program. Each poppy represents a local resident who lost their life on active service in World War I. Mayor Cr Bernadene Voss pictured at the Honour Board at the South Melbourne Town Hall. See pages 12-13 for more ways to participate in the commemoration of the end of WWI.
Time to reflect
A century ago in November, poignantly on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, the Armistice that ended World War I was signed. It marked the end of a war that claimed the lives of 914 Port Phillip residents and left a lasting toll on countless others. Dotted across our community are dedications to the men and women who served. The Cenotaph in St Kilda, and the solemn honour boards in town halls and South Melbourne Memorial Hall are just some examples. The Women’s Welcome Home Rotunda in Port Melbourne (pictured on page 12) is a magnificent illustration of the community spirit of the time. Built with funds raised by local women, the rotunda was a vital ingredient in ceremonies that welcomed the troops home. 2
Now, a century later, we will add another memorial by establishing a simple peace garden in the Railway Reserve, Port Melbourne. It will be a place of quiet reflection for future generations. As we reflect on the centenary, it’s timely to think about what unites us in times of need. Lest we forget, but let’s also celebrate the peace.

Stormwater detectives down our drains Council is using a new robot CCTV system to detect blockages and damage in stormwater drains an unseen but vital asset. The drainage team drives the robot mounted camera down the drains, where it navigates blockages, such 4
as tree roots, and records continuous footage of the drains. As problems are identified, the team arranges for minor problems to be fixed or adds the issue to the annual stormwater renewal and upgrade program.
Keep an eye out for the team and its new electric van as they work their way across the municipality, starting at Elwood’s flooding hotspots.
Art back at Linden After an extensive $1.9 million renovation funded by Council, the historic Linden mansion and gallery in Acland Street has reopened. A striking new entrance welcomes visitors and a new lift gives everyone access to the brand new exhibition space on the second level. The reopening exhibition runs until 4 November, and features Julia deVille’s intriguing taxidermy objects and Natalie Ryan’s collection of animals from natural science collections. Janet Beeston and Janet Bolitho are members of the World War I Centenary Community Commemorative Committee; David Thompson created Port Melbourne’s World War I centenary website.
Rotunda was first to say welcome home
As troop ships made their way back to Port Melbourne during World War I, local women were horrified to learn that wounded servicemen were returning without welcome. Quick to remedy the situation, the Red Cross established a sub-branch, 12
which it called the Women’s Welcome Home Committee, to greet all returning troop ships, a practice that continued until the end of 1920.
Presenting it as a gift to Port Melbourne Council in 1918, the rotunda became the first Australian memorial to mark the end of World War I.
As a permanent legacy of this work, committee members erected a band rotunda at their own cost.

Walk to remember the service of Heath Street
Christine Griffiths moved to Port Melbourne in 2014. In order to help put down roots in her new neighbourhood, she started researching the World War I service history of Heath Street’s residents. After enlisting the help of neighbour Barbara Mullens, the pair embarked on a project to unearth the stories of the 34 men in their street who enlisted during the ‘Great War’. This Armistice Day, these two women will lead a walk past the former Heath Street homes of the veterans and share their remarkable stories. Battlefields bayonet
This bayonet was recovered from the battlefields near Pozières, where Australian Imperial Forces fought with distinction in 1916. Presented to the City in 2014 by the Mayor of Pozières, it will be on display at St Kilda Town Hall from January 2019 as part of the annual Albert Jacka exhibition.
Barbara Mullens and Christine Griffiths have collated the war service of residents of their street in Port Melboume.
Explore more places in WWI history On the home front: a self-guided walk A new self-guided trail remembers World War I and its local impact. It includes the story of Burnett Gray MLA, the first serving councillor in Victoria to enlist in World War I. Gray was invalided back to Australia in 1920 and, while still in hospital, was re-elected to Council. He went on to be mayor four times.
