Building community immunity
An outbreak of whooping cough at a local primary school is a powerful reminder of the importance of timely vaccinations. Did you know that Port Phillip has a lower rate of vaccination than required to provide ‘herd’ immunity from serious infections including measles and whooping cough? Council is keen to help every parent get their child fully vaccinated. That’s why Council is working with schools and childcare centres to promote our free immunisation program. This Divercity has plenty of ideas for reducing, reusing and recycling, including a handy lift out that helps you make the most of Council’s rubbish and recycling services. A highlight is the innovative MyClimate online tool which shows you how much solar energy and
water falls on your home, enabling you to invest in energy and water saving with more confidence. Aspiring film makers and lovers of short film can look forward to the 32nd St Kilda Film Festival now with the added attraction of screenings at the St Kilda Town Hall. After opening night at the Palais, the 100 film program will play over nine nights at the town hall with a festival lounge and bar backed up by state of the art sound and screening technology. Council wants your assistance to identify people illegally dumping rubbish, to help reduce costs and improve the amenity of our streets. Council now receives more than 500 complaints every month about dumped rubbish, double the number in 2011. Council’s contractors collect 50 to 60 tonnes of illegal rubbish each month, mostly from nature strips and lanes. The dumped rubbish ranges from discarded furniture to abandoned household items like mattresses and fridges. Collecting this dumped rubbish is a significant cost to Council and can only be recouped when the person responsible for dumping the rubbish is identified. Lucky day for Ride2school Ride2School Day was held on Friday 13 March and more local schools than ever before took part. In all, 12 out of 18 local schools joined in. From St Kilda Primary School, 87 per cent of students came by bike or scooter, or walked, which led to a significant decline in car travel for the school run that day.

St Kilda Indigenous Nursery Co-operative is celebrating 20 years since it was established by a group of five community members. It’s expanded from growing 10,000 native and indigenous plants a year to over 100,000. Rate rebate for eligible pensioners
Do you have an unusual, interesting or antique tea pot? Submit it for inclusion in the Port Phillip Seniors Festival tea pot exhibition.
Rate payers with a Centrelink pension card or DVA gold card may be eligible for a Council funded rebate on rates in addition to the state government rebate. Eligible pensioners whose rates are over $712 can get the maximum combined rebate of $356, plus a $50 Fire Services Property Levy rebate. To receive the rebate you need to complete an application form, which is available at town halls and online. Please note that health care and seniors card holders are not eligible for the rebate. Banners Bold The Furies stand up
Kate Just’s renegade gang is angry, mournful and resistant. The Furies, four metre banners depicting twelve local women with a 50 year age span, some of them survivors of violence, stand boldly amongst the grand columns of the St Kilda Town Hall.
Kate, 2013 recipient of the Rupert Bunny Fellowship, was inspired by the recent murders of women, including St Kilda woman Tracy Connelly. The Furies confront the reality of violence against women and provide a public space for women to process their rage and grief.

Next stop for fitness A new outdoor fitness station at Peanut Farm Reserve is now ready to use. The station has seven easy to use pieces of exercise equipment and instructional signage to help the community be fit and healthy. There are now fitness stations at

A new family history group will start at the Emerald Hill Library & Heritage Centre in early June. Acland Street set for a refresh Acland Street is getting ready for a $1.8 million refresh and you are invited to have your say. Next year, Public Transport Victoria will construct a new level access tram terminus for Route 96 on Acland Street between Belford and Barkly streets. Set to start in mid 2016, the construction will provide an opportunity for Council to refresh the look and feel of Acland Street. Greenlight for pedestrians The Greenlight project has made crossing six major intersections easier for pedestrians after a Council investigation found inexpensive ways for VicRoads to increase pedestrian greenlight times. The intersections include St Kilda Road at High Street, Commercial Road at Arthur Street and Domain Road.

Young Aussie Rules footballers are invited to join in a series of Kidskick skills sessions that will run until September. The hour-long Saturday small group sessions are a fun, safe way to help the youngsters develop skills and game concepts. Sessions are held at A. C. Wattie Watson Oval in Elwood and cost $15 per session.
