NDIS comes to Port Phillip Mayor Cr Bernadene Voss welcomed the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) to its temporary home at the Liardet Street Community Centre in Port Melbourne. BSL is the local provider in the delivery of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which commenced locally in April.
No time to waste, let’s take sustainability to the next level
Much of this Divercity celebrates the efforts of individuals and the community to bring sustainable ideas into their everyday routine. Mayor From composting food waste to Cr Bernadene Voss growing vegies, walking and cycling cover story

when they can, avoiding plastics and recycling, the community is taking sustainability more seriously than ever before.
Now Council is looking to team up with the Victorian Government, South East Water and other councils to transform the way we deal with waste, with a goal to go from 35 per cent waste diverted from landfill to 80 per cent.
To do this, we want an Inner Metro Sustainability Hub to be built and operational by 2026, combining leading edge water recycling, an advanced waste to energy treatment facility, recycling centre and transfer station, depot and community facilities. It’s a big vision that requires the support of multiple funding partners. The Hub is a great example of how we are proactively responding to the challenges of our rapidly growing City with smart solutions for a sustainable future.

Turf’s up at Peanut Farm
Many ways to shape the future
A resurfaced oval is the first step in a $3.35m upgrade to the sports facilities at the popular Peanut Farm Reserve in St Kilda.
The Council Plan 2017-27 sets out what we want to see for our community by 2027. Council is seeking your feedback on a number of key documents, including the Draft Budget 2018/19, Sustainable Environment, Creative and Prosperous City, and Integrated Transport strategies.
The irrigated oval now has a hybrid synthetic and real grass surface in high-wear areas including the football goal and cricket bowling run-up.

Balaclava tram stop upgrade
Shape the future of St Kilda Marina With the current long term lease for St Kilda Marina expiring in April 2019, Council invites your participation in a planning process to identify how the marina, including its social and cultural, economic, environmental and financial benefits, could be enhanced. The first step is for Council to get your feedback on a draft site vision and objectives that will guide future
planning for the marina. Later this year, community members will be able to participate in developing and reviewing options, to help Council determine the best site outcomes and a new lease arrangement. Harvesting H2O the way to go? Imagine if we could capture stormwater, filter out pollutants and other nasties, and then use the water when needed on our magnificent parks and gardens. That’s exactly what we are considering for Alma Park. Council is investigating a stormwater harvesting scheme that captures stormwater from drainage pipes, treats it to remove pollutants and stores the water under the Alma Park sports field.
The stored water would be used to irrigate the sports field and adjacent park areas, including Alma Park West. Using this alternative water for irrigation, this scheme could save up to 17 million litres of tap water per year. It also reduces the amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment flowing into the bay. Download the stormwater harvesting fact sheet www.portphillip.vic.gov.au
The Balaclava Station tram stop on Carlisle Street is being upgraded to a level access stop by Public Transport Victoria. Council has contributed funding for extended bluestone paving and new street trees near the stop; there is also provision for additional lighting in the future. Small space, low waste
Eugene and Freya love gardening but they don’t have a garden. To compensate, they use their Port Melbourne townhouse balconies to grow vegetables and herbs. By composting their food scraps, they only need to take out their rubbish once a month.
Food waste challenge Did you know that the average Victorian household throws out over $2,200 worth of food per year. Most of this waste can be avoided by better planning of meals and the right storage of food. You can also start a compost or worm farm for food Photo: Chris Cassar

As part of its Maritime Infrastructure Renewal Program, Council has completed repair works to the Beacon Cove seawall. Sections have been replaced and additional rock armour has been installed at the toe of the wall to protect it from wave action.

Parents help schools help penguins
Dish washing teams at school events are reducing waste, which is helping to keep our bay cleaner. Inspired by the EcoCentre, the parent team at the Albert Park Primary School fete gloved up to wash reusable coffee cups, plates and cutlery to reduce waste by about 1,500 items. The school now has an event kit with reusable gear for use at other events. With the experience gained from 10 recent community events, the EcoCentre now has a host of ideas. The centre is willing to support groups who want to reduce waste at events. More ideas for penguin friendly events Karen Jones 9534 0670 karen@ecocentre.com

Living Water Workbees
A new online video promotes Council’s free electronic waste (e-waste) recycling service. e-waste, any item powered by a cord or battery, should not be disposed in your general waste or recycling kerbside bin. Instead the items will be accepted free at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre in South Melbourne.
You can help local schools earn up to $20,000 for rainwater tanks or rain gardens by participating in volunteer environmental activities. Locally, the Living Water Workbees program supports Elster Creek catchment clean-ups, wildlife surveys and planting days. Volunteers earn $25 worth of credits per hour towards grants to schools and community groups.

Award winning effort for Market South Melbourne Market has won two statewide sustainability awards for waste reduction and recycling. In 2016/17, the market’s worm farm converted around 400 cubic metres of green waste into compost; their bottle crusher processed 15 tonnes of glass for
reuse and recycling; 10,800 litres of oil were converted to biodiesel; SecondBite collected nearly 24 tonnes of fresh food; and rainwater was used for washdown and toilets. Learn more s outhmelbournemarket.com.au

Police Commissioner Graham Ashton with South Melbourne Senior Sergeant Dermot Avon and others at the Men’s Shed garden.
Shoulder to shoulder Police Commissioner Graham Ashton recently visited the Port Phillip Men’s Shed Garden to see first-hand an effort that’s helping police to deal with a tough and often distressing job.
Police affected by the Bourke Street incident and other critical events have been taking time out to help create the Men’s Shed Garden at the Uniting Church in
South Melbourne. About 20 police got involved in the garden by sourcing sleepers, building up soil and planting vegies.
Like other men’s shed activities, it’s about getting blokes together to build connection and reduce isolation. Police Commissioner Graham Ashton knows that this is crucial for all people with tough jobs. ‘Men talk when they’re
shoulder to shoulder,’ Graham told Divercity. It is clear that the effort is bearing fruit.
