Dedication Prayer To Our Loving God and Father, who called us in our particular fields, to be of service to Him and our communities, To St. Catherine of Siena, who through her writings, her voice and zealous labors to propagate the Catholic Christian Faith, became a Doctor of the Church, To Our Dear School Heads and Mentors, who with their patience and understanding, imparted to us their knowledge, To Our Beloved Parents, who with their guidance and sacrifices, wished only to give us the very best in life, To Our Loving Families, and finally To Our Alma Mater, “where behind its massive walls, we acquired wisdom, learned truth and goodness, strength and courage” We humbly dedicate this “Golden Anniversary Memory Yearbook”, a testimony of what we have become, fulfilling our dreams and aspirations. It was not a journey in a bed of roses, but often with bumpy roads and dead-ends. You have sustained us with your Love, Blessings, Guidance, Prayers and Care. We continue to pray for blessed and joyful lives, serving one another. May our lives honor You, Lord! About the Book

PROLOGUE & ACKNOWLEDGMENT

e all welcomed 2021 with the hope that a vaccine will protect us from Covid 19.

couple of phone blitzes, we were able to find and include as many classmates as possible. For those of you who were growing a little weary of receiving these text messages we trust your understanding.

Plans were underway to gather this year on our beautiful campus to celebrate our Golden High School Reunion 2021. Unfortunately, the global pandemic situation stole the spotlight and we had to cancel and consider everyone’s health and best interest. However, these challenging times did not stop us from lifting each other and celebrating the good memories and honor the friendships that we have formed for five decades.

Having great ideas and turning it into a memory book is as hard as it sounds. The experience is both internally challenging and rewarding. The love and teamwork poured into this project was impressive and it took a village to see this come to a reality.

In March 2021, a group of golden high-spirited classmates and myself, got together with the idea of creating a special keepsake to celebrate our class golden year. That is where the idea of a High School Memory Book was born. This group we called, the Memory Book Team, was composed of resilient and determined classmates who showed up on our weekly virtual meetings for the past 9 months. We worked so hard in reconnecting with classmates, collecting memories of our times and marveling at how we and our alma mater have moved forward over the last five decades. We had a wonderful time reflecting at the things that happened to us early in our lives. In a way, we had our own virtual reunion. As a group, it was quite a challenge to reach out to classmates from four different continents. However, through the help of emails, text messages and a

First, thank you Lord for blessing us with your guidance, wisdom, patience, and support to get through this project. All glory is yours! I would like to thank the members of Class’71 and faculty staff for their participation in submitting a memory page. We appreciate your enthusiasm. I would like to thank everyone who has helped us through this wonderful journey: To the members of the team: There was no doubt in our mind that we could produce a High School Memory Book worthy of our “golden celebration.” Kudos galore and heaps of thanks go to the devoted efforts of our team. We all made sacrifices to make it all happen. Thank you for the incredible commitment and dedication. You are some of the most amazing people that I have ever worked with, and I am humbled by your generosity and support. You are simply the best. To Edith: Thank you to our “Team Crier” you diligently sent out messages, coordinated our zoom meetings and made it sure that we started and ended on a timely manner. Thank you for your insights, constructive critiques, and creative skills you have shared in getting this book a reality. (‘About the Book’ continued on Page 2)

o Carmen Reese and Marcia Ocampo: You both have a great eye for creativity. Thank you for sharing your artistic skills and ideas.

To Milet and Susie: Thank you to our “Dynamic Duo” (Robin and Antwoman) for all your time, patience, and arduous work in providing this project with pictures from our high school days and the present. I hugely appreciate your tenacity in making contacts with every member of our class and achieved a good participation. To Vicky: Thank you for playing the role of the “Creative Book Manager.” Your expertise in laying out all the amazing ideas and suggestions helped us get to a final product that made us say, “Yes, we finally have a book!” We appreciate the extraordinary hours and matchless care in the development of this book. Nobody has been more important to all of us in pursuit of this project than one team member who wishes to be anonymous. She is an ultimate role model who provided us with unending inspiration. We say tremendous thanks for your support and generosity. Enjoy these pages filled with stories, life experiences and photos that capture the special connection that bonds us together and to our beloved alma mater, Siena College. Lastly, looking forward to seeing you next time but till then, let us continue to reignite our connection and friendship by staying in touch. Peace,

y dear Sienans Batch ‘71, Blessed be God forever.

Golden Jubilee Celebration is a rare occasion. It took 50 magical years before you turned GOLD. But this celebration is not just about 50 years after high school graduation. It is celebrating SIENANS who have turned GOLD as persons. As I address you on your jubilee, I am looking (virtually) at you with the eyes, not anymore of a teacher, but that of a mother who has seen her daughters as growing, carefree, teenagers to the glowing dependable goldies, very much like the precious gem, GOLD, that they are now. How precious have you become? Let count the ways. Your Alma mater is a CATHOLIC School. Is God still the center of your lives? I trust you have high ideals in life. Your Alma Mater is a Dominican School. “Veritas”. Do you still stand for the truth? I believe in your integrity. Your Alma Mater is a FILIPINO SCHOOL. Whatever citizenship you have acquired now, do you

keep the “Diwang Pinoy?” I hope in your concern and love for the Philippines and your “kababayans. Your Alma Mater is a CONGREGATIONAL SCHOOL. Do you still remember the DOMINICAN SISTERS OF ST CATHERINE OF SIENA, their teachings on values, their practices, and traditions? I feel your compassion and mercy for the sick, the poor and the young. A Sienan is MAKADIYOS, MAKA - TARUNGAN, MAKA-BAYAN, MAKA-TAO. Fifty years after your unparalleled, joyful, youthful life, you still manage to be together, albeit virtually. This is a gesture of passion for unity and solidarity. Given this fraternal gathering opportunity, you will reminisce life in Siena, I am sure with tears and laughter. So be it At the end of the day, PRAY. In conclusion, I invite you to come back to your Alma Mater, SCQC. The OP-Siena Sisters are waiting for you with open and loving arms. And this is my prayer for you. Be blest so that you may be a blessing to others. In the Triune God, SR. MARIA SOFIA TAGUINON,OP Prioress, General

SOME HOURS WEIGH AGAINST A WHOLE LIFETIME, BUT EVERYTHING HERE IS ONLY FOR A TIME By Margie David Collins (High School Class of 1971)

T

he world spun wildly on its axis and then buckled. An unknown, invisible and fast-moving killer enemy caught us completely unaware – even as experts and Bill Gates warned us of a coming pandemic that would kill millions of people and bring the world economy to its knees. Over 4M people have died from Covid-19; scientists believe the actual number is double that. In spite of efficacious vaccines which were rolled out at incredible comet-speed and which have weakened the link between infection, hospital admissions and deaths, infections and fatalities continue to rise around the world. You and I are alive today, thanks to the miracle of science and medicine, and the sheer triumph of human ingenuity and striving. Some people were not so lucky.

In silence we railed at the deafness and blindness of the universe. Pagan charms and jujus were offered to appease angry gods. We pondered the silence of God and wondered if this is His way of manifesting divine disfavor. Lock downs became that necessary friend we embraced without demur as we shielded and self-isolated. “My health depends upon your health. Your health depends upon my health,” wrote Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet. “Our liberties depend on our wellbeing. We must answer the question: what do we owe each other?”

We have lived in fear, with pulsating anxiety for the past 18 months. Life had taken on a stripped-down quality that tempered us to bad news, global discord, social upheavals and disappointments. Nothing, it seemed, could lighten the darkness, the dead weight of despair. We distanced ourselves, recoiling from hugs and human touch, depriving us of the essential hormones and neurotransmitters that humans need for wellbeing – dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin. We hid behind masks to protect others. We witnessed - perhaps experienced - bereavement and loss, in emotional landscapes eroded by grief.

In 1971, we carried the weight of expectations on our young shoulders. Having lived sheltered lives for the most part, we were thrust upon a new world; we were children pretending to be adults. We were in a hurry to grow up but not to grow old, to pack several lifetimes into one. We longed to fulfill our destinies – whatever they may be. Everything seemed possible and limitless. A few more years of academia and then – boom – to forge a successful career, to marry our sweetheart, raise children, build a home, to join in a common cause with humanity. But the future always arrives quickly and without fanfare. And so we passed through each other’s lives with fearsome velocity.

As the old becomes new again, as we slowly and painstakingly re-enter the world, and borders carefully reopen to welcome old friends, there is still a lot about this coronavirus that needs to be learned – its provenance, ability to mutate, transmissibility and resistance to vaccines. Experts have often said that the threat to our lives is not over anywhere until it is over everywhere. It may be that we have to live with the coronavirus (its siblings and offspring) forever, as we have learned to live with seasonal flu. But the time we spent in social isolation has made us painfully aware of how important, how much we valued our social connections, relationships and friendships.

T

empus fugit! I am 67 years old and it still surprises me when mornings grow old before their time. We are boomers, some of life’s winners upon whom the Fates smiled. We are docked in a safe harbor enjoying the advantages and heights of fabulousness served up by modern life: advanced medicine, life-prolonging medications and treatments, intercontinental travel, pensions and investments, connectedness at the press of a button through the Internet, various apps and social media, a glorious gallimaufry of entertainments – all of which have made our lives softer around the edges, and for which we are grateful. Life can be messy and unfair, and can discombobulate us with its smidgen of anarchy, its toll of sadness and miseries. Life is a long row to hoe, and is oftentimes marred by disappointments and slight hurts. In the melancholic song ‘September of My Years’ (sung by Frank Sinatra), the lyricists Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen wrote: “Once upon a time, the world was sweeter than we knew. Everything was ours, how happy we were then. But somehow, once upon a time, never comes again.” We know we will probably never take that cruise to Antarctica, or write a bestselling novel, climb K2;

we’ve come to terms with those things we can’t and will never do. And that’s OK! We have reached the age when most of the things and kinks in our lives, including in our personal relationships, are resolved and settled. When it’s OK to wear our age on our faces and to loosen our belts. When we give in to weary sighs and naps in the afternoon. To quote a sage: “Sometimes you can feel like a second-hand car, but it isn’t the years; it’s the mileage.” I don’t know about you but aging has taken me by surprise, becoming somewhat invisible and pixelated. But it isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative! John Updike wrote: “It turns out nature drips a little anesthetic into your veins each day that makes you think a day is as good a year, and a year as long as a lifetime. The routines of living – the tooth-brushing and pill-taking, the flossing and the water glass, the matching socks and the sorting of laundry into the proper bureau drawers – wear you down.” We will inevitably run out of road. As time inevitably slips through our fingers, how do we make use of this time? Everything should be made as simple as possible, advised Albert Einstein, but not simpler. Let our hearts and spirits be young! How cool and crazy it is to act our shoe size sometimes! Continue to bank

wonderful experiences in vaults of our memory. Live with a calm mind and with hearts easily made glad. Stay healthy and positive. String together a bouquet of good deeds. Intellectually engage and seek out mental stimulation. Set ourselves do-able and realistic challenges. Extend ourselves beyond selfimposed margins. No longer take anything or anyone for granted. Forgive – because life is now shorter and we can no longer carry a poisonous cargo of grievances. Generously stretch out a helping hand. Do stuff – with people we have just come to know, with those we love and like. Enjoy our revels! Let us be kind more than is necessary – for as Philip Larkin wrote: “We should be careful of each other; we should be kind while there is still time.” Let us be grateful. Pray. And may our lives be all we could want and hope them to be. As we emerge into blindingly marvelous sunlight, I wish for you and your loved ones good health, peace of mind, calm and serenity, fragrant sprigs of joy and hope. Happy Golden Anniversary! Until next time, whenever then.

Batch ‘71 were my first students in 1969. I was 23 years old when I became their Literature teacher, later class advisor, much later groupmates or “barkadas” even, “Kumadres”.

My friends ’71, together we journeyed through life. Where this will lead, I don’t know but for certain, you my friends, were there when we needed each other. I pray that all of you may always be healthy and safe.

I considered my work as a blessing being able to be of service to these young students.

My final message:

To all my Batch ’71, you will always be special because we both grew in heart, mind and spirit. Until this day we meet up, whether it is in Manila or in the US. It was always

ongratulations on your 50th reunion. It just seemed like yesterday that I was giving you x + 2y – z = 0 on the board, quizzes and tests. Seriously, how time has flown. But we did quite well, didn’t we?

50 years have passed by and looking at all of you, I am so proud that you made it outside the premises of Siena, living your yesterday’s dream. Having said that, I would like to say that it has been a privilege and honor to have been a part of your lives.

“We all take different paths in life but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere” Tim McGraw We have seen a lot of changes in our lifetime, and I can’t believe it has been 50 years since we graduated from Siena College. As we look at our Alma Mater today, we see the tradition continues, a fine education updated to match the needs of tomorrow. So much has happened and it seems to have passed so quickly. We got an education that prepared us for the future. Most of us went to college, married, have children and now grandchildren. Let’s face it, we are older, I mean mature and wiser with wonderful memories and more frequent senior moments. But most importantly, we remain friends and connected. It’s all good. We are strong, resilient and beautiful. We are accomplished women. In the inspiring words of Mother Sofia at the 2018 Global Siena Reunion “Stay connected and take care of one another.” To the ones who we have seen recently and to the ones we have not seen for the last fifty years, I propose a toast to the class of 1971. Once a Sienan, always a Sienan! Hail Beloved Siena! Highlights after High School: After many years of Catholic education in an exclusive girl school, I decided to explore the real world. I went to Far Eastern University where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Right after graduating in 1975 , I left for an exciting venture to California. Not being able to survive a long-distance love relationship, I went back home 6 months after and married my high school sweetheart, Jun. We are presently settled in Camarillo, California where we have two beautiful children, Jennifer and Jason, 5 adorable grandchildren who keeps us young, Trinity, Lotus, Thomas, Tyler and Elijah and of course an adorable Sheep - a - doodle named Novo. I recently retired from the City of Simi Valley Water Quality Control as a Chemist and an Environmental Advocate. I am a firm believer of giving back and I volunteer my time to church and community outreach programs. Now that I am retired, I enjoy hanging out with hubby at the golf course putting balls. I also started going out in the backyard working on my vegetable garden. Most of all my favorite pastime is hanging out with the family as much as Jun and I can. Life is good.

y life after High School graduation was full of excitement, dreams, decisions, and planning. After months of researching on what college degree will I take, I decided to take B.S. in Electronics & Communications Engineering (ECE) at the University of Santo Tomas. During my first year in college, I started suffering symptoms of my congenital heart problem called ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). Fortunately, there was a Medical Mission from Canada, led by a FilipinoChinese Cardiologist, (Dr. Yap) who was a UP graduate. Luckily, I was one of the selected patients to undergo a surgery, which was performed on Dec. 7, 1971.It was my second life. On Oct. 7, 1975, I married my long-time boyfriend, Ruben Seeckts-Constantino. He was working for the US Navy as a Quarter Master. On Dec. 7, 1976, I joined my husband in Charleston, South Carolina. We were blessed with three (3) children and 2 grand children. For 35 years, I worked for different banks and retired on September 30, 2010 at Union Bank in San Diego as a Business Development Officer, VP. I had been involved with various community organizations and been active in Church ministries & volunteered in some Non-Profit Associations. After retirement in 2010, my husband & I did some traveling, in which we visited most of the Asian countries, South America, Europe, Mexican Riviera, Cuba, and many more. On May 22, 2020, my husband died of liver cancer, which was very unexpected, because he was diagnosed only 6 months before that incident. For a few months, after Ruben’s death, I felt so empty and lonely. I keep myself busy and started doing succulent gardening, continued volunteering in the community, spending more time with my family, my siblings, and friends. God is good.

SIENA COLLEGE: THEN & NOW By Loma Rodriguez Flojo

H

as it been fifty years since we marched out of the halls of Siena College (SC) in March 1971? All fiftysix of us with faces lit up wearing smiles of hope on our lips, ready for the adventures that college promises. Fast forward to today, we wonder what happened to our alma mater and what significant changes were made when we stepped out of Siena to spread our wings. Here’s what I gathered:

That the curriculum now offers in addition to the regular courses: BS in Tourism Management, BS in Hospitality Management and Master of Arts in Religious & Pastoral Ministry.

DID YOU KNOW...

That the cafeteria is still in the upper quadrangle, but currently, there is another one located in the lower quadrangle.

That Siena College has a new logo.

That the stage in the quadrangle where Finian’s Rainbow directed by Fr. Reuter was performed, has been enclosed, and an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was placed in front of it while the interior has been converted into offices.

That SC’s official motto is “Passion for Truth and Compassion for Humanity.” That the Vision of SC is “By 2022, we envision to be an innovative, a relevant and resilient provider of a quality Catholic Dominican Filipino Sienan education.” That the Mission of SC is “Inspired by the virtues and values of Mother Francisca del Espiritu Santo de Fuentes, the community of Siena College Quezon City commits itself to the integral formation of persons promoting a quality Catholic Dominican Filipino Sienan education.” That SC has been co-ed since 1972 for elementary; 1998 for high school and 1992 for college. Current population in elementary and high school has a ratio of 42% males to 57% females. In college based on 1st Semester 20-21-22 the ratio is 33% males to 67% females.

That the grotto where we used to have masses and processions still stands, but the remains of the departed nuns have been transferred to “Tahanan” in San Jose, Bulacan. In front of it now is an area called a “Haven of Peace Garden.” That a swimming pool was built, but since the pandemic, it has now been converted into a fishpond where the sisters harvest tilapia.

That beside the chapel stands Sta. Caterina da Siena Training Hotel and Events Place with four big bedrooms and a large function rooms which the students use for their practicum, but they are open for the use of the alumni and Siena College visitors. That the “hill” where we posed for our class pictures is now the site of Siena Hall, a large covered multi-purpose structure, where the graduations, reunions, performances and other big activities are held.

That the Red Lily which is the official school publication, is now being handled by the College Department. That its patroness Mother Francisca, founder of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, has been declared by the Vatican as ‘venerable,’ two steps away from sainthood. A miracle would have to be attributed to her intercession in order for her to be beatified. Another miracle would be needed for her to finally be canonized and declared a saint of he Roman Catholic Church. That the Four Graduates Attributes are: A Sienan is God-Centered, a Community Builder, a Truth Seeker, and a Servant Leader. So dear classmates, exciting changes have occurred in our alma mater, and each one of us has taken different paths into becoming women of substance and character in our own ways. SC has given us, if I may quote a Netflix film, “…memories that shape us, mold us into what we become---a mosaic of our different experiences…particularly those that either traumatize us, or change us, uplift us and those that really define us. It is true what they say that “you can take us out of Siena, but you cannot take Siena out of us”. Let us try to live our lives the way our soon-to-be-saint, Mother Francisca did --with trust, in joy, and with total devotion to its mission.

That other added interesting sites include a Butterfly Garden, a Liturgical and Marian Gallery, the SCQC Gallery, a Computer Area in the lobby, an Outreach Center, a Siena Hall and the St. Martin de Porres Hall.
