jdeutsch@thenownews.com To say that Tanner and Teka are glued to Tricia Thomas would be an understatement. The two tiny Chihuahuas never leave the senior’s side. Thomas has had the now 11- and 14-year-old dogs since they were puppies. So giving them up is something she wouldn’t consider. But as the Tri-Cities resident quickly found out, her unwillingness to part with her pets could
leave her out of a home. Thomas is also learning first-hand just how hard it can be to find affordable housing in the Tri-Cities. For the better part of four months, Thomas has been looking for an apartment to rent, with her two dogs — with no luck. The biggest obstacle is finding an affordable place that will take her two dogs. No landlords appear willing to take all three of them. “I don’t know what people do with their pets CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Candidates squaring off in the riding of Port Coquitlam include, from left, Ryan Hague (Conservative), Mike Farnworth (NDP) and Barbara Lu (Liberals).
Talking politics in Port Coquitlam THE NOW INTERVIEWS THE THREE POCO CANDIDATES FROM B.C.’S MAJOR PARTIES — Conservative Ryan Hague is a 32-year-old electrician
• What’s your view on funding for education? “I am very much for more funding. The party’s stance is that we don’t know if there’s any more money, so we can’t guarantee any money. But my feeling is, if there’s money, education is one place that we need to invest.” • How would your government balance the budget? “As a government, we need to be transparent and we need to spend wiser. We need to look through the whole books, find out what we need, what we don’t, what programs are working, what programs aren’t, and decide where we’re going to allocate the money.” • How can we fix the TransLink governance model? “The TransLink model, I’m not fully versed in, but I will say that if you don’t respect your employees … that’s where you get stung. I don’t know if they need more money, I don’t know if they just want a better work environment, but if a business has turnover and if a business has problems within the people that are working together, it’s the direct result of poor management.” • What do you offer that the other candidates that you’re running against don’t? “I am one of the hardest workers I know and I guarantee that I can govern and serve with integrity, with loyalty and respect towards the people of Port Coquitlam and British Columbia. I have business values, but I also want to protect the environment. I grew up here, I love it here and I don’t want to leave.”
— Mike Farnworth, 53, is the NDP incumbent • What’s your view on funding for education? “Our platform has announced $372 million over three years for education funding; $265 million is earmarked for additional teachers, counsellors, librarians and we think that will help in terms of dealing with class size and composition.” • How would your government balance the budget? “We’ve laid out a fiscal plan for how the next four years are going to do: the revenues that we expect to come in and the expenditures we expect to make. We would like to balance the budget over the business cycle and we would like to have it balanced by the next election.” • How can we fix the TransLink governance model? “What we have to do is recognize there are some key principles when it comes to governance with TransLink, and that is accountability and transparency. Those are missing right now. We want to work with the mayors, and restore local control to TransLink so that decisions are being made by elected officials who actually have the ability to make a decision, which is not what you have right now.” What do you offer that the other candidates that you’re running against don’t? “A lifetime of experience here in Port Coquitlam: I’ve grown up in this community, I went to school here, I know this community, I know its streets, I know its trails, I know the river and I know the people. I think I’ve established a strong reputation as someone who can work with people of differing political stripes, whether at the local, provincial or national level.”
— At 24, Barbara Lu is the youngest B.C. Liberal candidate • What’s your view on funding for education? “I think the government has done a great job thus far. We’ve actually increased funding despite what a lot of people believe. The enrolment has actually gone down, but we’ve increased funding. There’s been more [educational assistants] added, there’s been more hiring going on.” • How would your government balance the budget? “Controlling spending is the No. 1 thing we have to focus on and that’s what we are doing with our platform. We have controlled spending. With the NDP, Adrian Dix is up to $3 billion in spending promises without a fully costed plan about how he’s going to pay for it all. Today’s B.C. Liberals are working on a platform that controls spending.” • How can we fix the TransLink governance model? “Working together between all levels of government and TransLink to find out what the best options are for them. They are doing their best. But like any organization, they have to go back in and look at what their inefficiencies are and try to improve. And they’ve had a little trouble with that … but any organization has issues with that.” What do you offer that the other candidates that you’re running against don’t? “I like to tell people that I have the courage to step out, be bold and bring some fresh ideas to Port Coquitlam. I grew up here, so I can relate to young people really well, but to parents also because they care mostly about their kids and their education, and those are things that I’ve recently gone through.”
Corner stores the target of robbery suspect Jeremy DEUTSCH
jdeutsch@thenownews.com Once again, Coquitlam Mounties are on the hunt for an alleged serial robber. Local RCMP note the investigation is in its early stages and they can’t release much information, but say a man is responsible for a robbery spree in the last week targeting convenience stores and corner stores across Coquitlam and PoCo. Though police wouldn’t divulge exactly how
many robberies the suspect might be responsible for, RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung noted it was “more than a couple.” “All I can say is we’re in the process of linking him to a number of them,” he told The Tri-Cities NOW. According to Mounties, the alleged robber, described as tall and slim, has demanded money from cashiers and, in some cases, carried a handgun. The suspect has also struck at all times of the day.
Chung said the case is a top priority for the detachment. “There is a potential for people getting hurt and we don’t want anybody to get hurt,” he said. On Wednesday night, police were called out to another grocery store robbery in the 500 block of Gatensbury Street. Police said two men robbed the store before fleeing the scene. Chung said no one was hurt in the incident
and investigators are still trying to determine if the robbery is related to the others. The most recent rash of robberies has the RCMP reminding the public and convenience store employees to stay calm and follow the commands of the suspect if they are being robbed. Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP detachment at 604-945-1550 and quote file 201310413.

when they have to live somewhere. Unless you buy, you can’t have a pet,” she said, noting her frustration at rental ads that state pets are not allowed. Thomas believes landlords are prejudging her because she has two dogs, but she insists they’re clean and she’s a responsible pet owner. “It’s just unfair,” she said, pointing out that she’s willing to put up an extra $1,000 damage deposit. However, she is resolved to keep her dogs that have been together for years. “I’m going to be feeling so guilty for the rest of my life,” she said of the thought of handing them over to a shelter.
Thomas owned her own home for 30 years, but two years ago decided to sell and rent an apartment because it was getting harder for her to maintain the house as she got older. She said she didn’t realize at the time how difficult a task it would be to find an affordable — and decent — place to rent. The places she’s looked at are either too expensive for her budget, or as she puts it “a dump.” Currently, she’s living in a basement suite in a home with her adult kids, but due to family circumstances, needs to move out by the end of the month. With a few days left, she’s still not sure what she’s going to do.
“It’s terrible out there trying to find affordable housing,” Thomas said, adding she believes she’s not alone in her struggle. “Especially if you have pets.” According to the BC SPCA, owners not being able to find pet-friendly housing is the number one reason pets are surrendered to the organization. Craig Naherniak, the SPCA’s general manager of humane education, noted 12 per cent of surrendered dogs come into the organization because of a lack of accommodations. That’s more than double the amount of canines that get surrendered due to behavioral problems. Naherniak explained there CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Landlords can charge deposit SPECIAL PROVISION EXISTS FOR PET RENTALS
CONT. FROM PAGE 5 are usually two aspects to the issue, in which either the pet owner is moving and can’t find accommodations with their pet, or a landlord won’t allow pets. He said a few years back the provincial government came up with a compromise that would allow landlords to charge a pet deposit to waive an animal restriction,
but noted that still, only a fraction of rental housing allows pets. However, Naherniak argued there is an incentive for landlords to take on pet owners, suggesting they tend to live in a place three times longer and are willing to pay more. “What we would call for is people to be a bit more forgiving; the Lower Mainland is a very pet-loving community,”
Who knew the most exciting man in my life…

Thomas said she understands there are irresponsible pet owners, but she’s asking landlords to consider each situation individually. “See the person and animal and then make a fair decision,” she said. Chilko Drive will be under construction for paving works starting late April for approximately four weeks (weather dependent). Expect major congestion as Chilko will be configured to single lane alternating traffic between Mariner and Lougheed. Expect longer delays during key construction activities when the road will be completely closed except for local traffic. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes and watch for informational signage along route. Suggested alternative routes are United Boulevard to Mariner Way or Dewdney Trunk Road to Mariner Way.

Despite being left with more questions than answers Monday, PoCo council gave a preliminary go-ahead to a sprawling 11-acre redevelopment in the Dominion Triangle. The proposal is being spearheaded by the Foursquare Gospel Church of Canada and Conwest Developments and is spread across five parcels of land located at 2220 Freemont St., 579 Nicola Ave. and 570 Dominion Ave. Its centrepiece would be a new, 750-person church that would include an auditorium, gym, kitchen, meeting rooms, café, book store
and outdoor amenities. On top of those additions, a 600-person banquet hall would be situated on the site. Some councillors wondered how much of the property would receive tax-exempt status, and how parking concerns would be dealt with, particularly if functions were happening in the church and banquet hall at the same time. Coun. Michael Wright, on the other hand, called the proposal an “exciting project” with a “great concept.” “Everything that I’ve heard so far and read about this particular concept, I’ve liked,” he said.

It appears parents in the Tri-Cities are going to have to get used to a school district and its staff trying to do more with less. On Tuesday, School District 43 officials offered greater detail about the cuts being proposed to deal with a $12.1million deficit for the 2013-14 school year. To balance the budget, some of the big cuts the district is proposing include chopping 22 teaching positions by increasing class sizes at all levels, cutting 17 teaching positions from international education, cutting another 12 learning support teachers, and reducing six positions from its high incidence staff. The proposed cuts also includedroppingfiveprincipal and vice-principal positions, six administration positions, 12 clerical positions, 10 custodians, seven from facilities and maintenance, and further cuts and a reorganization of support staff such as youth workers, teachers’ assistants and special-education assistants. In all, the proposed cuts would save $12.5 million. School District 43 Supt. Tom Grant noted the district has already begun identifying and notifying individuals of potential cuts. District officials first started
this time we have to make those difficult decisions and have a fulsome discussion about it,” she said. However, Hyndes suggested any changes would not be long term, adding School District 43 has always been the envy of other districts. “I believe we will rebuild what we had,” she said. As for an audit, Hyndes said the board will have a discussion on the idea. She said the board needs to figure out first what kind of audit is needed to get the answers it’s looking for in terms of the errors made in the budget process. Though Hyndes didn’t offer a specific timeline for when the board would OK an audit, she suggested it would come once the budget is finalized and before the end of the school year. The next school board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 in the gym at Winslow Centre, at 1100 Winslow Ave. in Coquitlam.

US border fee proposal a toll too far
E
veryone’s in a tizzy since the Americans announced they’re considering charging a fee to Canadian border crossers. While bridges across the Lower Mainland, including the new Port Mann, are springing up with tolls, we’ve always taken it for granted that a trip to the States will be gratis. Well, for a certain value of free. A border crossing fee, especially one of $1 to $10, won’t deter anyone from making a once-a-year trip to see Disneyland or their American friends or relatives. But there are those who cross the border every day — truckers, mostly, and some choose to live here and work there, or vice versa. Then there are those who cross once a week or so, to get cheap gas, maybe pick up some milk and eggs. For those frequent crossers, it will be the equivalent of a significant toll. Even a dollar a day adds up — especially if the exchange rate slips over the years. That’s in addition to the non-monetary costs we’ve endured along the borders over the past decade. Increased security has meant the need for more ID, including passports or enhanced driver’s licences. If the U.S. puts a border toll in place, they’ll be taking a small chunk out of the Canadian economy. We could put up a tit-for-tat fee of our own, but that would also hurt us. Do we want to discourage American tourists and film crews from coming up here and pouring money into our coffers? Definitely not. It’s ironic that, with free trade thoroughly entrenched, the United States is now considering putting a price on the movement of individuals through the world’s longest undefended border.

In the past women had different priorities, but it is no use complaining about the past. In The Lion King, Rafiki says “Yes, the past can hurt sometimes. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it,” and I think this is the way Disney movies should be taken. People can see the flaws behind the movies but still appreciate and enjoy the movie as a whole. The entertainment industry is losing the art of family programming. There are few programs on these days that the entire family can sit down to and have every member genuinely enjoy. This is a staple of Disney, and when I’m 80 years old I hope that they are still producing movies that I can sit down and enjoy, with characters that I will proudly display on my Christmas wrapping paper and catchy music that I will not be able to get out of my head. A THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS
Re: “Why the double standard when it comes to sex?” My Generation column, Friday, April 5. I wish to commend most highly Jonah Park on his insightful, wellwritten and accurate column. He is right: the long-standing sexual double standard is unfair and demeaning to women. I speak as a woman who is 74 years of age and who has watched and experienced the shaming of women for my whole life. I am thankful that at least now there is safe and reliable birth control; it used to be that young women who were sexually active often became pregnant, which meant being forced into marriage at an unsuitable age, or being put through the pain and shame of being sent to a Home For Unwed Mothers, where they were forced to relinquish their newborns for adoption. I hope to see a time when Jonah’s attitude prevails. Please convey my admiration and support to this fine young man. Mary DeVoretz Coquitlam
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 21 to 27), Canadian Blood Services thanks the 17,000 volunteers who dedicated 215,000 hours of their time in the last year to help support Canada’s blood system. In B.C. and the Yukon region, 1,800 volunteers invested nearly 35,000 hours to assist in more than 2,300 community and clinic events that enable our organization to keep expenses low. Nationwide, our volunteers are involved in leading positive change in a variety of ways, all of them vital: They coordinate and host blood donor clinics, greet and assist donors, promote key campaigns throughout the year, and speak about the need for blood and stem cell donation. Our volunteers provide considerable value to the donation experience, which is recognized by many of our donors. Their combined efforts and commitment help us to deliver daily on our organization’s services that are so important to many Canadians. We put together a special message of thanks for our volunteers from blood donors across the country: http://www.youtube.
com/watch?v=alKRux0i1XQ&fe ature=youtu.be. Thank you to those who currently volunteer with Canadian Blood Services and other charitable organizations. Your efforts and enthusiasm are truly appreciated. Ed Yee, Director of Donor and Clinic Services, Canadian Blood Services, BC and Yukon Region
BC BEHIND ON STRATA ISSUES In speaking with condo owners and their advocates in Alberta and Ontario, I found something quite interesting. It was not about the similarity of their issues with those in British Columbia, and there are many similarities one could write about. It is that each of those provinces has a member in the legislature who frequently speaks up on behalf of condo owners, something sadly lacking in B.C. Alberta recently began a major review of its Condominium Property Act. Coincidence? In Ontario, MPP Rosario Marchese even went so far as

to present a private member’s bill to address major problems with condo law in that province. Ontario is now undertaking a major review of its Condominium Act. Coincidence? In B.C., condo or strata properties are far more common than in Alberta and Ontario and unfair actions perpetrated against B.C. strata owners are equally egregious. However, there has not been a major review of the B.C. Strata Property Act since 1998. I have more copies than I can count of letters and e-mails sent to MLAs by strata owners. When I search Hansard I find that none of these MLAs has ever stood up in question period and asked a question of the responsible minister. None of their names ever turns up in my search of strata stories in the media. When it comes to representing strata owners they are both silent and invisible. There are over 700,000 strata owners eligible to vote in this election. Strata owners can and should make it clear that they will not vote for a candidate who is “silent and invisible” on the need for strata legislation reform. Deryk Norton www.strataadvocate.ca

TO THE WONDER Starring: Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem Directed by: Terrence Malick Running time: 112 minutes To the Wonder is the furthest thing I can think of from mainstream filmmaking. In fact, I didn’t even give it a star rating. This is not a film for those who want to talk, text or put their brains in neutral. Nor is it for those who solely consume movie-movie pablum. Instead, it requires deep attention and sensitivity to symbols and metaphors. Don’t go in thinking Malick will spell things out for you. To the Wonder is an abstract artwork that evokes and examines humanity’s hunger for love through a Roman Catholic sensibility. The best possible way to describe it is as a mixture of poetry and photography. Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life, Days of Heaven) is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. His uncompromising vision has been ever-present in all of his feature films since his 1973 debut, Badlands. Despite the economic and studio pressures surrounding our age, his career has seen him make only six films in over 40 years. Throughout his evolving career, Malick has always tried to stretch the way we define cinema; from his dreamlike, narrative-bound Badlands to the climax of his experimentation in To the Wonder, Malick has always been an auteur whose art is of great beauty. The sparse narrative consists of two separate stories — a priest (Javier Bardem) pondering his lack of intimacy with God, and a couple struggling through their passion-filled relationship. The couple, Neal (Ben Affleck) and Marina (Olga Kurylenko), are growing more distant. Marina is codependently in love, while Neal begins to lose interest in her. When their relationship finally breaks apart, Neal attempts to rekindle his sentiment with an old friend (Rachel McAdams). (Please do not think love triangle. The film is not about the exploitation of its characters or narra-
on humanity’s hunger for love, whether that’s a priest’s thirst for God’s presence or a man’s love for a woman. There is within each of us a love tank that yearns to be

found in any human but must surely be experienced from a deity. The film keeps portraying God’s love as mediated through humans to other humans, but the real solution is in an unmediated direct experience of God’s love. This is the love that fills and keeps filling our love tanks. Malick continues his experimentation in his new labyrinth, To the Wonder. Love it or hate it, I dare you to experience it.

Injury woes put Adanacs on alert
W
hile the Coquitlam senior Adanacs’ fate may not completely rest on one injured knee, it sure does cloud their hopes. With sniper Dane Dobbie awaiting the results of an MRI taken last week, his Western Lacrosse Association club is furiously adding pieces that can either complement the diminutive offensive pitbull, or help replace his tallies. “Obviously I’m worried about this because he’s a guy we don’t want to lose — no team can afford to lose a player of [Dobbie’s] calibre,” Adanac general manager Randy Delmonico said. In 14 games last year, the 26-year-old led the team with 29 goals and 29 assists and stood ninth overall in league scoring. Dobbie was a force in the playoffs, contributing 25 goals and 20 assists in just 11 games as the club marched to the league final. If the righthander’s season is in jeopardy, then the outlook will require some adjustment. “I’m just trying not to think about it,” added Delmonico. The fleet forward suffered the injury to his right knee nearly two weeks ago while cutting to the net for the National Lacrosse League’s Calgary Roughnecks. A diagnosis has had to wait until the swelling subsided. The team announced some acquisitions meant to complement a crafty offence and an intimidating defence. They picked up righthander Jeff Zywicki and lefthanders Jesse Guerin and Zach Palmer. Zywicki, 32, played last year with New Westminster, scoring 13 goals and drawing 25 assists over 14 games. “He’s an older, experience guy who can help out our younger guys,” noted Delmonico. “Zywicki knows how to score.” All three are expected to inject some more offence into a defence-first lineup. Guerin comes in having finished second in Ontario major league scoring last season with 22 goals and 37 assists despite playing on last-place Ajax. “It’s another lefthander, but this became an important move if we have to go without [Dobbie] for any period of time. He’s got a great stick and we expect him to complement Dobbie on the floor.” Palmer, meanwhile, will join the Adanacs mid-season after wrapping up commitments at John Hopkins University. He also comes via Ajax, which drafted the 22-year-old with its first pick in the Ontario Major junior draft. CONTINUED ON PAGE 35

Dream final one win away Dan OLSON
sports@thenownews.com For both the Coquitlam Metro-Ford junior Wolves and Port Moody Lordco Gunners, extending the run to this weekend’s Under21 Doug Day Cup provincial semifinals is just fine, thank you. One more win for both and they’ll have a date in the championship final. The two clubs prevailed last week in the quarterfinals, with the Wolves blanking Estrella de Chile 2-0, while the Gunners topped the Highlanders from Victoria 4-1. Cole Almond netted what proved to be the game winner for Coquitlam, cashing in a strong cross just 20 minutes into the contest. Almond would also set up Dalibor Plavsic for the insurance marker. “Chile is a good team and I think they’re underestimated around [the Vancouver Metro] league,” said Coquitlam coach Russel Huggon. “We worked real hard to get that early lead but they certainly forced
Security Screens
the issue.” Huggon noted that netminder Cam Frost was locked in, turning back what was a game-tying chance late in the first half when the Wolves were up 1-0. “He made just a cracking save, it was a big time stop,” added Huggon. Next on the docket for the Wolves is another VMSL rival, Guildford FC, who posted a 10-4-2 regular season record. The Surrey squad, which hosts Saturday’s semifinal, was responsible for one of Coquitlam’s two losses during the regular season — a 30 stinger early in the season. “We know what they bring,” said Huggon. “They played us tough and we met again in the League Cup [round-robin] and just beat them with a late goal, so they weren’t happy.” Guildford would bounce back and win the U-21 Cup title, while Coquitlam was knocked out in last month’s semifinals. The team that knocked the Wolves out of that tournament, West Vancouver,
is the opposition for Port Moody in the other Saturday semi, 2 p.m. at North Van’s Ambleside Park. Gunners assistant coach Rick Sayers knows that as defending champions, Port Moody should be carrying the torch into their semifinal matchup. However, no one can look past West Van. “They are one of the elite teams [of Vancouver Metro league],” remarked Sayers. “They are very aggressive and hard tackling. We expect them to come at us hard but we’ve been preparing for this.” Port Moody surged through its quarterfinal challenge last week behind a two-goal effort from Santiago Vasquez, who opened the scoring at the 15-minute mark. Jack Livesey and Jason Yoo also tallied. Now, the focus is squarely on West Van, which finished second in the Metro circuit with a 12-1-3 record. The victors of each semifinal will square off for the Doug Day U-21 provincial cup on May 11.

Honest racers win
Coquitlam’s Susan MacRae ran an honest race Sunday at the Vancouver Sun Run and placed second overall among the women’s 50-54 age group. A few days later it was revealed that MacRae’s time of 42 minutes 29 seconds was actually the fastest time, after officials stripped Neena Cheema of her first-place prize. Cheema, who crossed the finish line 45 seconds ahead of MacRae, was deemed to have taken a short cut along the 10kilometre route. MacRae’s time was two seconds quicker than Irene Jonker of Delta. Mohammed Razak, who topped the men’s 55-59 age group, was also relieved of his first-place award for the same reason. In the men’s 54-49 category, PoCo’s Dave Frilund moved up to third place with a time of 38:18 minutes, just 2:14 behind winner Gary Duncan of Victoria. Overall, along with Port Moody’s Natasha Fraser, who won the women’s race in a time of 32:42, Coquiitlam’s Kevin Friesen posted the eighth fastest time overall, at 30:32, and finished fourth among men 25-29. Other winners in their respective age groups include Eino Kyynarainen of Coquitlam, who finished first in the men’s 85-89 group in 1:36.20, and Port Moody’s Verna Conrad, who topped the women’s 60-64 division with a time of 45:50. Also posting top-three times were Tatsuya Hatachi, 34:29 and third among men’s 45-49; Peter Barrington, 49:04 and third in men’s 70-74.

OUT OF REACH: The Coquitlam Lions’ David Scheier, right, pressures a rival for the ball during the Lower Mainland Water Polo League Tournament, hosted at the City Centre Aquatic Complex. Sheier’s squad won the under-14 bantam division, while Coquitlam also carted off gold in the senior division.
A forward with Whitby last year, he registered five goals and 10 assists in four Minto Cup series games. On the backend, the squad has also claimed Jeff Sproule after he was released by the Salmonbellies. Perhaps the most significant ‘get’ would be health for both Dobbie and Peter Veltman, the 30-year-old sniper who missed all of last season due to an injury. He is recovering from doubleankle surgery and remains on the injured list. “We’ve been adding players on both sides of the floor, and defensively we look really solid,” added Delmonico. “Some of our players may not arrive until later, but we should be OK — however we definitely are hoping for some good news (on Dobbie).” Coquitlam opens the 2013 WLA season May 17 in Victoria, with the home opener May 25 against Maple Ridge.
