The forecast is calling for nothing but sun and warm weather and, while that’s welcome news for sun-starved Lower Mainlanders, it makes the people whose job it is to rescue individuals when they’re in trouble a tad uneasy.

“The first warm spell really makes us nervous,” said Dwight Yochim, Coquitlam Search and Rescue team manager.

He explained that though temperatures may be warm, there is still a lot of snow at the higher levels of both Burke Mountain and Eagle Mountain.

Yochim said people tend to head out to the backcountry in shorts and sneakers, but if they get lost or injured, they’re unprepared to spend a lengthy time out in the snow.

“We always run into problems with this situation,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW. “We get more hypothermic calls at this time of the year than any other time of the year CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

1 - What’s your view for the future of the Riverview Hospital site?

The commitment that the NDP made a number of years ago is to keep public lands as public lands. It’s really about not carving it up.

Keep those lands in public hands.

1 - What’s your view for the future of the Riverview Hospital site?

Having grown up next to Riverview, it’s certainly been a landmark and a very historic place within the community. It also provides a lot of greenspace for the community.

For me, it’s one of those things that at this certain point in time, to see about keeping Riverview as is, in its current space.

2 - How would your government make housing more affordable in the Tri-Cities?

From a provincial perspective, there’s a commitment to build 1,500 units a year over the next couple years of affordable housing. I would like to see some of that come to us, because I think we have some real challenges in our community, and that includes co-operative housing and rental housing for low and moderate income families. We also need to work in partnerships … we need to bring everybody to the table who has a stake in housing.

3 – What would your government do to help combat climate change?

We need to get people out of their cars.

We know that’s one of the biggest challenges we have. We need to put proper funding into TransLink because people aren’t going to get out of their cars unless it’s easy to get around, so we need to make it easier. So what we’re going to be doing is taking a part of that carbon tax that we all contribute to through our gas … and use it for sustainable funding for TransLink.

4 – What do you offer that other candidates in your riding don’t?

I offer a business mind, but also one that is very open to new ideas because I’ve always been a change agent as well. It’s about communication and creating an air of inclusiveness so that everyone is heard. I can represent the voices of everyone out there.

Though the standard provincial talking points were also touched on — health care, education and job creation — Liberal candidate Steve Kim and NDPer Selina Robinson faced questions that were centred predominantly within the city limits.

The issue of the Bailey bridge standstill was one of the first questions put to the two candidates — more specifically, what each of their parties would do to ensure that a new bridge is built.

Kim suggested he would work in tandem with City of New Westminster officials directly to get a deal done, while Robinson suggested the province will have to intervene.

“I’m not confident that the two municipalities, without some support from the province, will be able to resolve this,” she said.

Both candidates also said they would make a point of alleviating signage concerns — by adding local names as opposed to

route numbers — along the Lougheed Highway and near the Cape Horn Interchange.

Byelections, and their associated costs, were also highlighted, with each candidate asked if their parties would pay for costly byelections when sitting municipal councillors move on to serve at other levels of government.

Neither candidate answered the question directly, though Robinson suggested she would push for changes to the Local Government Act. “If those types of funds are available, it might be worth having a conversation,” Kim added. “But at the same time, we’re always looking for the best people to represent each riding.”

More than a year and a half after its demise, the closure of Rochester Pool continued to resonate. Both candidates were asked what they would do to keep outdoor pools open.

“If they can be maintained at a very low cost, it’s something that we should take a look at,” Kim said.

Robinson suggested the city is in need of more recreational facilities, but added that building and operating outdoor pools isn’t viable financially.

School district deficits were also a topic of interest, though the question posed asked each candidate how they would control rising labour costs.

Robinson said the NDP would directly invest in education spending to the tune of $100 million annually for hiring teachers.

“If we don’t invest in education, there will be no economy, there will be no jobs,” she said.

As was the case with many of Kim’s responses, he pointed

to the economy, suggesting that a Liberal government would produce a viable enough economy to pay for education concerns.

When asked to prioritize three areas of government spending — education, health care and job creation — Kim selected job creation as his first area of concern, followed by education.

Robinson refused to answer the question, and said that being asked to do so was akin to being asked to name her favourite child.

The issue of party lines was also examined, with the pair being asked whether they would vote against the wishes of their party’s caucus.

Neither would do so.

“What it comes down to, is teamwork,” Kim said.

“When you’re on a team, there are times when you have to act as a part of the whole collective.”

Youth engagement in the political process was also a point raised by moderator Richard Rainey. He spoke to how his 18year-old son not only refused to attend Tuesday’s meeting, but also how he isn’t interested in voting.

Kim said the issue could be alleviated by reaching out to young people early in their development, and stressing the ideals of democracy and engagement.

“We need to be able to treat other with respect, have good dialogue across the table [and] recognize that we are people doing the best we can,” Robinson added.

Green Party candidate Edward Stanbrough did not attend the debate. Voting day is May 14.

City spokesperson Dan McDonald noted that those are plausible possibilities in the future, though the technology isn’t configured for those uses yet.

“This is meant to be what I would consider passive information at this stage. But anything is possible,” McDonald said.

Coun. Lou Sekora was the lone councillor opposed to the use of the codes, suggesting he couldn’t support the initiative without knowing the full costs around replacement or incidents of vandalism.

Living wage out of reach for many

W

hat’s the hourly wage a family of two working parents with young children needs to earn to stay afloat in Metro Vancouver? According to the Living Wage for Families Campaign, it’s $19.62 an hour — and the costs of raising a family in Metro Vancouver are increasing faster than the rate of inflation.

The 2013 Metro Vancouver living wage rose by 48 cents from the 2012 figure of $19.14 an hour, representing an increase of 2.5 per cent — almost double the inflation rate of 1.3 per cent, according to the campaign.

The living wage is defined as the hourly rate at which a family with two full-time earners and two young kids can meet basic expenses (rent, child care, food and transportation) after government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies are taken into account.

Transportation, child care and food costs are some of the biggest factors behind the increase to the living wage, with the cost of owning a car jumping by $28 per month, a 13-per-cent hike in transit fares, child-care costs rising by $28 per month, food costs by $17 per month, and MSP premiums by four per cent in 2013.

Low wages are a key contributor to child poverty in B.C., the campaign says, with 43 per cent of poor kids living in families where at least one adult had a full-time, full-year job. All of this, as sad as it is, is not overly surprising.

We know it’s expensive to live in B.C., or “Bring Cash” as they call it in Alberta. But it’s sobering to think that even families with parents who work full-time may not be able to provide the basics for their kids in this expensive region.

We don’t have any easy answers, but this is definitely an issue that candidates from all of the provincial political parties should be looking at.

A pair of brown blurs amble from one blind spot to another, and with the passing of black, beady eyes and a snort, I know that the time to strike has come.

I had not planned on the bear being with a cub, but by the time she realizes my presence, it will be far too late for protective action. Delicately, I place the 12-inch blade between my teeth and begin my approach.

“Stop,” a familiar voice says from within my mind. My heart skips a beat.

“You?! I thought I ditched you back in Taiwan,” I reply with my thoughts.

“No, that was your dignity; you can’t ditch your conscience, although your little stunt in The National Palace Museum did convince me to take a much-needed vacation.”

“Huh, so that’s why I’ve been living on the bleeding edge recently.”

“Living? Man, you’ve stooped over to use the blood as war paint! I mean … you were going to kill that bear cub, weren’t you?”

“Well … yeah …”

I glance over at the bears, which still haven’t moved or noticed me. Satisfied that I haven’t ruined my chance, I plop down on a rock.

“A cub that young can’t survive on its own; it’s a matter of mercy.”

“Is it? Is it really? Tell me, why is it that you feel the need to stick a bear with a blade in the first place?”

“Oh please, I don’t have to explain myself to myself. This …”

I sweep my hand in the bear’s direction, momentarily unaware that I’m by

“This is the way of nature. Animals get killed every day.”

“Prey gets killed every day, by predators, out of necessity. You don’t see a bear walking around looking for animals so it can walk out of this forest draped in their fur.”

“Oh that’s not fair; you know what I’m thinking but I don’t know what you’re thinking,” I counter with a hint of annoyance.

“My thoughts are your own, sans stabhappy ego. If you want to know what that’s like, then shut up for a minute and listen.”

I heave a sigh.

“Fine, you have the floor.”

“I didn’t come back to tell you not to hunt; hunting happens. But every human being on this earth has a set of lines that they don’t cross; and one of the most dangerous, irresponsible and foolish things you can do is refuse to define or contemplate your own.

“That bear cub over there might not be capable of telling someone how much he loves them, but he deserves a chance to live and love all the same.

Perhaps all living things deserve that chance; but that’s not where your line is. You drew your line right here, in this forest; it has just taken us both a little time to realize it. Forgive me if you think I’m a little late in doing this.”

“What?” *snap* I blink and look around. The bears are shuffling away from me. Sheathing the knife, I turn and head toward the forest’s entrance.

Re: “Two people trapped in SUV by fallen tree,” Wednesday, April 21.

On Sunday, April 21, my husband, son, his fiancé and I enjoyed brunch together at one of my son’s favourite restaurants.

We left shortly after noon with a light rain falling.

We were on our way to check out some furniture that my son was interested in and, as we made our way through Sunday traffic, waiting our turn nearing the stop sign at Crabbe and Kitchener in PoCo, the unthinkable happened.

While we were stopped, our vehicle was struck by an enormous tree.

In those terrifying moments as it was happening and realizing we were all trapped to varying degrees, our screams for “Help!” and to “Call 911!” were immediately met with witnesses jumping to our assistance. There were a handful of strangers who did not hesitate to help us.

These were horrifying moments as we were unsure of all of our injuries and there were many times through the course of those first precious minutes that my son’s fiancé, myself and other

eyewitnesses believed we had lost our loved ones.

The driver that was behind us, and other witnesses, pulled my future daughter-in-law and I out of the vehicle from the back.

There were, I believe, two men who helped me rip branches away from the vehicle to gain access to my husband, who was not only trapped but pinned and motionless. My son, too, was pinned and trapped.

There was a gentleman from the neighbourhood who ran to get his chainsaw and immediately started to alleviate pressure on the vehicle by cutting through portions of the tree.

Consts. Blakeman and Gill were at our sides very quickly and stayed close to support us throughout the ordeal.

The first responders, fire department units, EMTs and other RCMP were quick to assess the needs of our family members and got to work in extricating them both from the Jimmy.

Minutes felt like hours but there were many hands and what looked to be two teams working hard for both of our men.

It was such a relief and blessing to see my husband and son, not only out of the twisted metal and broken glass, but conscious and

conversant.

We want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the individuals who helped us during some of the darkest moments of our lives.

To the witnesses who were the first to help us out of the vehicle and with the tree, to the RCMP members who were quickly on scene, to the fire department units and the EMTs, to the staff of Royal Columbian Hospital ER and to our own family members and friends who were a constant source of comfort throughout that day and who continue to support us — we are and will remain forever grateful.

dragging, reluctant and shallow revision of this Act in the last couple of years.

However, arguably the most pressing matter — that is, the creation of a mechanism (such as is provided for tenants versus landlords in the Residential Tenancy Act) by which condo owners may obtain swift and fair justice without having to launch costly, tedious and highly stressful Supreme Court action — has not been achieved. Instead, an equally ponderous arbitration process is being put forward.

B.C.’s Strata Property Act is archaic and, what is worse, it is toothless. This should not be the case when so much money is involved. The results of inadequate legislation are serious, as condo owners in Toronto discovered when massive fraud was exposed. Can B.C. be much different?

So, the question I would like to put to Port Moody-Coquitlam candidates Billie Helps, Jeff Monds, Linda Reimer and Joe Trasolini is: If you are elected, what will you do to support the condo owners in your constituency against dishonesty, corruption, fraud and unfairness?

jdeutsch@thenownews.com Coquitlam Mounties have been offering few details about a body discovered floating in the Pitt River in Port Coquitlam Wednesday morning.

The body was found at 7 a.m. by someone on the water, not far from shore near Harken Towing. By noon, a tarp was still visible at the edge of a dock on the Argue Street business’s property.

Police can’t say how long the body might have been in the water, the gender or whether foul play was involved.

“There isn’t a lot of information at this point,” RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung told the media Wednesday afternoon.

He did note the body was found in the river and then brought closer to shore.

Mounties said it could be quite some time before they identify the body if no identification can be found.

Chung said investigators would also be looking at recent cases of missing people as

New recruits and trucks at fire halls

Brothers Nick and Tony Delmonico, fire chiefs in Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam respectively, have been touting a series of new additions to their respective forces, as both municipalities added new equipment and personnel.

In the PoCo context, the department hired six new recruits, including a pair of females — a first since 1996. In fact, those new recruits represent the second and third female firefighters in the force’s history.

“It’s a universal problem in the fire service in general — there’s not a lot of women applicants,” Nick Delmonico said. “I think it’s compounded by the fact that we’re small and we only hire, as a general rule, one or two people a year as people retire. A place like Vancouver hires 40 or 50 a year, so they have a bigger scale to choose from.”

The recent staff increase was the first since 1991, a time when the city had 27,000 residents and averaged three calls a day. Today, the population is approaching 60,000 and the department averages 13 calls a day.

Each of the six new employees has been undergoing a four-week training process, and is expected to be called into frontline duty this month.

Between now and then, they will be trained in procedures and protocols specific to PoCo.

As for the older trucks being taken out of service, the city will likely auction them off or donate them to smaller firefighting services located elsewhere in B.C.

PoCo, Kwikwetlem working to reopen trail Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com For the better part of three weeks, the Traboulay PoCo trail that runs through the Kwikwetlem First Nation reserve has been closed to the public, but that could soon change.

Both the City of Port Coquitlam and the first nation are working on a new agreement that would see the trail and dike reopened to the public.

Dale Lessoway, the band’s lands and resource manager, said lawyers are currently looking over the contract, as are PoCo city staff.

He couldn’t offer a firm time frame for when the agreement would get done and the trail reopened, but he

did note it would be open for this weekend’s Wheel2Heal event.

Lessoway noted the new contract, which would be in place for three years, is similar to the previous agreement in that the city would maintain the dike, but give the band a bigger say and control to make sure the work is being done.

“Before we would just hand it over and they took over all this stuff, but now we want a better hand in ensuring that everything is being done in a proper manner,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW. Signs along the Traboulay PoCo Trail through Coquitlam Indian Reserve No. 2 went up April 15, indicating the dike would be closed to the

general public. Officials with the band at the time said the dike needed to be closed until proper maintenance and liability issues were addressed.

The band had hoped to get funding to maintain the trail from the province’s dike authority, but the plans fell through.

The City of PoCo had a three-year agreement with the band to maintain and repair the dike, but that agreement ended in February.

Under the agreement, PoCo would maintain the dike through the reserve, provide signs on the trail, two picnic tables and an advertisement in the spring parks and recreation brochure promoting the band’s tour and bike rental business.

The band would then provide unrestricted access to the dike for the trail and be allowed to close it for a funeral or other ceremony.

On March 1, the band advised the city it would be taking over the maintenance and repair.

However, Lessoway said it made sense for the band to sign a new agreement with PoCo. PoCo Mayor Greg Moore said the objective of the city is to keep the trail open, but noted he didn’t have specific details on the agreement.

“It seems as though it’s [the agreement] been working fine for the last three years.

Childrens’ vitamin deficiency signs

A healthy diet is supposed to provide all of the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to sustain a body. But thanks to finicky eating habits and limited choices, many children are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy.

Although many foods are fortified with certain vitamins, they still may not be enough to provide the level of nutrition required for a growing body. Parents may be well informed of a child’s needs of vitamin C to boost immune system function, but they may not be as readily informed about other vitamins that are essential to human health.

• Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system and proper eyesight function. A child lacking in vitamin A may be tired and weak and experience weight loss. Other symptoms include dry eyes, skin scaling and respiratory infections.

• Vitamin B6: Hyperactivity and impulsiveness are often blamed on an underlying medical condition, such as ADHD. But such conditions may be the result of a deficiency in vitamin B6.

• Vitamin B12: Nervous system function is largely governed by proper levels of vitamin B12. Children who do not receive enough vitamin B12 may experience weakness, insomnia, edema, and abdominal pain.

• Vitamin D: Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced in the body after exposure to the sun. Children who spend many hours indoors or wearing thick layers of sunscreen may not get enough vitamin D. Irritability, muscle cramps and even late teething could be tied to vitamin D deficiency.

Parents should consult with pediatricians about the proper levels of vitamins children need.

hen exiting the cinema after the intensely excruciating Pain& Gain I emerged

enraged and outside myself in anger at everyone involved in the making of this distasteful sewage.

My emotions of dirtiness, depression and disgust were all evoked by this irreverently unfunny, distractingly stylized and “mass entertaining” movie. I don’t know what shook me more: the reality that the majority of the audience was laughing or the events on screen.

I don’t understand Michael Bay’s thought processes in wanting to make this movie.

In the early 1990s a group of steroid monkeys kidnapped, tortured and murdered rich people in order to steal their belongings. And now Bay wants to make light of the situation by making a comedy based on it.

Told in the same manner as a Scorsese crime drama like Goodfellas, Pain & Gain hardly possesses a plot. The film presents three fiends: Daniel Lugo (the brains of the operation), Paul Doyle (a born-again coke addict) and Adrian Doorbal (a ster-

oid addict with an erectile dysfunction). All without money! All bodybuilders who believe their laborious physical training entitles them to the American dream of living the good life at someone else’s expense!

The following are three trenchant criticisms of this film. First, it is morally offensive. A truck steam rolls over a person’s head and afterwards the characters utter some sexual slur. Where is the humour when the film CONT. ON PAGE 22

A group wine tasting You don’t need a mix to make guacamole

O

ne of the challenges of reviewing wines is that usually, reviewers have to rely on their individual tasting skills and on an off day this can be a challenge.

Recently, I invited the Port Moody Wine Club to review some wines on a group basis.

This involved the 20 members tasting a wine and then putting their thoughts on paper. I gathered these notes and found that there were many accurate and interesting observations that I may have overlooked, so I thought I would review the wines of Perseus using these notes gathered from club members.

Perseus Wines hail from the Penticton area of the Okanagan. They have vineyards in a few sub-regions in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. I had not tasted the wines of this smaller producer before, but I was glad I did and so were the members. We were all impressed by the consistent quality these wines showcased.

The reviews below are based on the tasting comments of the 20 members participating, so they truly reflect a wide spectrum of tasting experience as many members have been honing

their tasting skills for years outside and inside the club.

The Perseus Pinot Gris 2011 exhibited crisp green apple, pear and grapefruit on the nose. The taste was crisp, clear, creamy and smooth.

One member described it as, “a summer breeze in an apricot orchard.” I think that member should be working for an advertising agency!

Next up in the tasting was the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. Members picked up on the fresh herb, perhaps tarragon, and the mineral nature of the wine. Smooth, dry and fresh in the glass, it is perfect for fresh, in-season halibut.

On to the red wines, beginning with the 2011 Merlot.

A fruity nose leads off with blackberry, raspberry and cherry scents, followed by hints of plum, smoke, spice and dark chocolate.

The members accurately described the taste as dry, but firm due to its youthful-

ness. With lots of up-front flavour, all agreed it would be a great match for slow cooked barbecue.

A fairly unusual blend for the Okanagan is the Cabernet/Shiraz 2011, which showed black cherry, berry, spice and anise on the finish. Full, with dark red, smooth tannins and well balanced, it was a “symphonic dance of complex, subtle flavour explosions,” wrote one member.

The final wine we tasted was certainly the highlight of the evening. The Invictus 2009, a complex blend of Cabernets, Merlot and Petit Verdot, revealed cassis, sage and fresh tobacco tones.

Silky, smooth, orange to the rim and with a super long finish, this wine is well worth the $32 price tag. Comments on this one included, “pure indulgence, luxurious and magical.” I also agree with another note from a member: “not surprised it’s their flagship.” Thanks to the wine club for their insights, which prove that many heads are better than one, especially when it comes to describing and commenting on wines.

love experiencing the tastes of different cuisines, and use any excuse I can find to switch things up a bit at the dinner table.

Celebratory dates from around the globe are perfect for this, and May 5 marks Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually on Sept.

16. Cinco de Mayo is simply Spanish for the Fifth of May, and is a regional holiday that commemorates Mexico’s defeat of the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Regardless, it is a perfect day to prepare and enjoy Mexican food.

I have tasted a number of homemade salsas and guacamoles and many of them have fallen short of being incredible, let alone worthy of being called “Mexican cuisine.”

True guacamole (pronounced gwahk-ah-“MOLE”lee) does not consist of avocados that have been mashed together with an envelope of powder called “guacamole mix.”

I know there are a number of people who may struggle in the kitchen, or don’t

believe they have the time in their schedules to successfully chop a few handfuls of ingredients, but once you try this recipe you will never want to go back to the powdered mix.

The only ingredient in this recipe that may seem foreign to you is “sambal oelek.”

It is a crushed chili product that comes in a liquid/paste that is basically a rehydrated form of the dried crushed chilies you have on your spice rack. It can usually be found in any major grocery store down the Asian or imported food aisle or in any gourmet food store.

Even if you have always made your guacamole from fresh ingredients, I am certain that you will still appreciate the complexity and balance of flavour this recipe has to offer, as well as the texture.

Eat, enjoy and be merry this fifth of May … but try not to dance around the sombrero too much.

“Avocado salsa at its best — chunky and full of flavour!

The lime juice will help to keep the avocados from oxidizing (turning brown).”

Ingredients: 2 soft avocados Juice from 1 large lime 1/4 yellow bell pepper, finely diced 1/4 red bell pepper, finely diced 1/4 red onion, finely diced 1/2 jalapeño pepper, minced 1 garlic clove, crushed 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp sambal oelek 1/2 tsp sugar Salt and pepper to taste Method: Cut, pit and peel the avocados. Mash them in a medium bowl with the lime juice. Add all of the other ingredients to the bowl and mix together. Refrigerate until needed.

The History of Rotary International T he world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.

Rotary’s popularity spread, and within a decade, clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg, Canada. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents. The organization adopted the Rotary International name a year later.

As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization’s dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.

By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members. The organization’s distinguished reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks — among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, and composer Jean Sibelius.

The Four-Way Test In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later.

The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotary and World War II During World War II, many clubs were forced to disband, while others stepped up their service efforts to provide emergency relief to victims of the war. In 1942, looking ahead to the postwar era, Rotarians called for a conference to promote international educational and cultural exchanges. This event inspired the founding of UNESCO. In 1945, 49 Rotary club members served in 29 delegations to the UN Charter Conference. Rotary still actively participates in UN conferences by sending observers to

major meetings and covering the United Nations in its publications.

“Few there are who do not recognize the good work which is done by Rotary clubs throughout the free world,” former Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain once declared.

Dawn of a new century As it approached the 21st century, Rotary worked to meet society’s changing needs, expanding its service efforts to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk.

In 1989, the organization voted to admit women into the clubs worldwide. Today, women are an integral part of Rotary’s membership.

After the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed or re-established throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

The first Russian Rotary club was chartered in 1990, and the organization underwent a growth spurt for the next several years.

park — whatever it may be — can be a nice outing.

• Treat her to a special dinner. Ask about favourite foods and create a meal at home. If dining out is a must, choose a day other than Mother’s Day to avoid the crowds and have intimate moments with just the two of you, especially if you are also honouring your own mother on Mother’s Day. • Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that. Maybe you met up due to a hobby or interest.

Remember the first day you met and reminisce by heading to that place for a celebration.

• Have an extended family fiesta. Host a Mother’s Day party at home and single out all the special women in attendance. Serve cocktails and enjoy the time spent together.

WOLVES STALL IN SEMI It was a tough hole dug in the early going, but the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves put together a hungry rally and nearly made it before losing 3-1 to Guildford FC in the B.C. under-21 Provincial Cup soccer semifinals.

Guildford took its first lead at just six minutes, capitalizing on a miscue, then doubled it a handful of minutes later.

Fahim Karmali put the Wolves on the scoreboard late in the first half and the U-21 regular season champions appeared to gain a bolt of momentum heading into the half.

But the Surrey squad cashed in what Coquitlam coach Russel Huggon described as “a weak goal” to restore its two-goal lead. From that point on, it was uphill.

“It was a hard way to end it... It was just one of those days where the soccer gods weren’t smiling our way,” noted Huggon.

NO GO FOR GUNNERS There will be no repeat champion in the B.C. Under-21 Provincial Cup. The defending champion Port Moody Lordco Gunners saw their run halted last week in a 4-0 blanking at the hands of West Vancouver FC. West Van added two late goals to lock up its Provincial Cup final berth.

While disappointed, Port Moody had plenty to celebrate after going undefeated in league pay.

“As a season, it was a success,” said Sayers.

But even in hockey, fate has a way.

A day after Coquitlam’s Mathew Barzal confirmed his commitment to the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, the club reached out and chose fellow Burnaby Winter Club product Dante Fabbro with the eighth overall pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft on Thursday.

It’s hard to say who was the happiest on Thursday morning — Fabbro, Bardal or Seattle GM Russ Farwell.

championships next week in Surrey, and put the squad in a good position to pick up momentum and a chance to defend its provincial title.

“It wasn’t easy this time around as the other school’s have gotten stronger and not all of our top players were able to attend,” noted Talons coach Brian Unger in an email.

“We do have two budding stars however who made the difference in Grade 9 student Henry Lee and A.J. Ewart, who is a Grade 8 student at Summit [Middle] who is playing up.”

For the T-birds, Fabbro’s well-rounded skillset made him an obvious choice when it came to their first selection. “[Fabbro] is a very exciting offensive defenceman and can be a game changer all by himself,” Farwell said in a media release.

“We really like him as a player,” added TBirds director of player personnel Colin Alexander. “He’s a impact defenseman who is very competitive and when you combine skill and competitiveness you get a special player.”

A Centennial student, Fabbro is weighing his options as to where he’ll play next season — as 15-year-olds can only play a handful of games in the WHL during their first midget year. But there’s no doubt in Barzal’s mind that he’ll be a big asset when he’s ready for the jump.

“He’s a competitor and he never lets you beat him. For me he’s tough to get around. When we did one-on-one drills he was a monster to work against,” added Barzal.

In the sixth round, Medicine Hat selected Coquitlam Minor Hockey product Caleb Fantillo, 123rd overall.

The five-foot-10 right winger was among the top players selected to compete in last month’s under-16 B.C. Cup.

In Loving Memory of Turner, Charles Henry "Chuck" May 03, 1935 - Apr 24, 2013 Chuck, 77, of Coquitlam, B.C., passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 24, 2013 with his family by his side after a very brief illness. Loving husband and companion of 50 years to Pat, and devoted father of son Scott (Kerrie, Sydney), and daughters Sharon (David, Connor, William) and Susan (Gregg, Madison, Jaxon). Loved by extended family in England and many friends. Chuck was born on May 3, 1935 in Surrey, B.C. to Petra and Richard Turner and studied engineering at U.B.C before heading to Montreal where he met his wife Pat who had come from London, England to work at the Royal Victoria Hospital. After Montreal, Chuck moved to Sherbrooke where he married Pat and they lived for three years before spending five years in Ocean Falls. They relocated to Clearbrook and then Coquitlam to make their home and raise their family while Chuck pursued his engineering career. Chuck’s biggest joy was spending time with family. He also enjoyed curling, lawn bowling, golf, camping, travelling to sunny and exotic places, the grad group, music, and all sports, most notably the Canucks. Chuck was known by all for his cheerful personality, kindness, and sense of humor. A celebration of Chuck’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday May 4th, 2013 at Burkeview Chapel, 1340 Dominion Ave, Port Coquitlam.

Much loved and will be greatly missed.
