jdeutsch@thenownews.com The Mossom Creek Hatchery in Port Moody was always open Sunday. The volunteers never knew who might walk through the door. It could be someone who volunteered as a child 20 years ago and was back to show their own children what they had done. This Sunday, the hatchery won’t be open. A fire Wednesday night destroyed the buildings that housed the hatchery and the education
centre that accompanied it. “We’re very sad. This holds memories for so many people,” Ruth Foster told the Tri-Cities NOW as she surveyed the destruction Thursday morning. Foster, along with Rod MacVicar, started the hatchery when they were both biology teachers at Centennial Secondary back in 1976. She recalled the two teachers wanted to do field work with the students. They were looking for place that would offer a “rich experience.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Ex-sled dog adapts to new home SPCA IS STILL TRYING TO FIND HOMES FOR 17 OTHER FORMER WHISTLER SLED DOGS
John KURUCZ jkurucz@thenownews.com Weasley’s transition from sled dog to house dog appears to be going just fine. Gone are the days of lapping it up for tourists, let alone reports of the horrific cull that claimed 56 other dogs in Whistler three years ago. Instead, his priorities these days are going for runs and working on his relationship with Chip, a 14-year-old Shepherd-Rottweiler cross that currently sits atop Vicky Robinson’s pet hierarchy as the alpha male. “I was worried before adopting him that he wouldn’t get along well with all my other pets, but they all get along great,” said Robinson, a Coquitlam native who adopted Weasley in August. “People are surprised that he’s so sociable.” A six-year-old HuskyGerman Pointer, Weasley

News of that cull, and the subsequent help offered,
re-emerged late last month when it became known that the Whistler Sled Dog Company will be closing its operations. The SPCA issued a press release noting that 17 more dogs still need to find permanent homes, which prompted Robinson to tell Weasley’s

Join us for a live forum Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com There’s something about the holiday season that makes people in the Tri-Cities eager to give. Whether it be the SHARE food bank, Salvation Army kettles or school-run events, there is no shortage of worthy groups and campaigns to give to at this time of the year. But with so many people and groups doing their best
to bring holiday cheer to those less fortunate, it’s not always easy for charities to get the public’s attention. So building off a successful Twitter town hall last month, the Tri-Cities NOW is once again hosting an online forum on Wednesday, Dec. 18, from noon to 1 p.m., this time focused on the charities, groups and events raising money and goods throughout the Tri-Cities during the holiday season.
Using the hashtag #TCNOWforum, the TriCities NOW is inviting all groups and individuals across the five communities to share their fundraising endeavours with the public. If you’re not on Twitter, let us know about your special event or Christmas charity and we’ll give it a plug during the forum. Contact us at jdeutsch@thenownews.com or 604-444-3092 by noon on Tuesday (Dec. 17).

istic” labour contracts signed in 2011 with city employees have started to work in bringing down budget costs. “We’re having to make back some goodwill with the taxpayer to say ‘Listen, we are always trying to do what’s in the best interest of the taxpayer in Port Moody and sometimes it’s easier and sometimes it’s harder,’” he said. While the picture looks pretty rosy for taxpayers in 2014, Clay warned it might not be that way in future years. He noted the city has a $10million infrastructure deficit that will have to be addressed at some point. The mayor said city council has opted to take on those projects as they come, rather than take extra from taxpayers each year. As for this year’s budget, city council typically gives final readings to the budget in the spring, with the rate set into law in May.

jdeutsch@thenownews.com It looks like Port Moody is set to steal the budget thunder from its friendly neighbour. Recently, the City of Coquitlam set its tax rate for 2014 at 2.42 per cent, one of the lowest rates in years. But the folks at Port Moody City Hall are on track to beat their city-limit rivals. According to the city’s preliminary budget, Port Moody residents could be looking at just a 1.5-per-cent property tax increase in 2014. That figure drops even further when the utilities are included to form what’s called a blended rate, which right now is at 0.99 per cent. That works out to an extra $28 for the average homeowner with an assessed property value of $547,500. It should be noted, the numbers are still in the early stages and council has yet to begin deliberation. Still, the numbers are encouraging for Mayor Mike Clay. “It is unheard of in the City of Port Moody,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW. Clay credited staff at City
will,” he said. A breakdown of the preliminary budget shows a 1.15per-cent increase, or $21 for general government and a 0.35-per-cent jump, or $6 for police. A line item in the budget called the asset renewal levy and a couple of bucks more for storm drainage increases the total to $47, or 2.5 per cent, but a $19 drop in the utility rate brings down the total to $28 for the average assessed household. The increase would have beenevenlower, butthepolice department missed its target because of an operational change that sees the force move from the Vancouver Police Department’s homicide team to join the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. The change in teams cost the department roughly $183,000. The budget for 2014 is in a much different state than it was at this time last year. The city was looking at a nearly seven-per-cent tax increase. Eventually that figure was whittled down to slightly more than five per cent. Clay suggested more “real-

So many ways to help
T
here’s no shortage of ways to help others at this time of the year. This Saturday in Coquitlam, Mounties will attempt to “Cram the Cruiser” — aka fill a police car full of non-perishable food donations for SHARE. You can drop by the parking lot at Westwood Street and Lougheed Highway (between Superstore and the tanning salon), from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 to make a donation. On Monday, Dec. 16, the CP Holiday Train will roll into town, with stops scheduled for 5:25 p.m. in Port Moody and 7:15 p.m. in PoCo. Both locations will feature live entertainment, family-friendly activities and a chance to donate to SHARE’s food bank. See Page 13 for details. Another fundraiser for SHARE happens throughout December: the Tri-Cities NOW’s very own Caring for TriCities Kids campaign (formerly known as Pennies for Presents). This fundraiser allows Tri-Cities residents to donate coins (yes, we still accept pennies), cheques, paper money and, new this year, Coquitlam Centre gift cards, to SHARE. Proceeds are used to buy Christmas gifts for kids whose families cannot afford to do so. And donations made at any one of five local ScotiaBank branches will be matched up to $5,000, making your contribution stretch even further. Another worthy cause is the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign, with volunteers collecting outside stores and other locations across the country. To learn more about the range of opportunities to help others this holiday season, check out our “Twitter town hall” forum, from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18. If you have a Twitter account, sign in, type “TCNOWforum” into the search bar and you can ask questions of local charities, or let residents know about others. If you don’t have a Twitter account, visit us online at www.thenownews.com between noon and 1 p.m. on Wednesday to watch the conversation unfold. The number of local charities is astounding, but so, unfortunately, is the need, so please consider helping out.

If only we could “Freaky Friday” it, you would realize that that crazy teacher I can’t stand is actually insane. You’d realize why I can’t seem to focus in class anymore — trust me, once you see his eyes you’ll never look away either. You’ll realize that those 15-minute bathroom breaks are very necessary for me not to lose my mind hearing that chick talk about her boyfriend for an hour. You’ll look at her as a petty, dramatic teenager but, Mom, remember that’s me too. You’ll recognize that the War of 1812 isn’t as interesting as you think it is. And you will understand why when I come home I don’t want to wash the dishes, take out the garbage, clean my room and do my homework. You’ll figure out that I lie to you about most of my marks — sorry I can’t compare to the perfect child you want me to be. “Older sibling’s name” may have got an A but remember I’m not them, and though you think I don’t try hard enough it’s not fun being the stupid one. You’ll finally realize that the boyfriend you see the polite, nice side of doesn’t actually treat me very well. Maybe when I come home, lock the door and play music you’ll stop convincing yourself that I’m just “doing my homework.” You’ll realize that some of those friends you think I should be more like aren’t so smart after all, and that I wouldn’t do half the things that they would. You may actually believe me when I say I’m the responsible one for a change

instead of diminishing me when I truly try — and trust me, it’s not easy sometimes. You’ll see that when I don’t respond I’m not ignoring you; it’s just my brain holding too much information that I shouldn’t have to worry about, and that is way above my maturity level. Mom, I know that you don’t think I care enough about my future, and I know you think that the brochures you left open on my desk have gone unread, but if you could be me for one day, and just one day, you’d realize that I’m scared out of my mind to grow up. That I am terrified and so afraid that I won’t end up like you. You’ll realize that “going to sleep” really means staying up for hours just … thinking. I bet you had no idea that I worry so much and how constantly acti-
ve my brain is. I bet you wouldn’t have realized how much crap someone you think “has it so easy” goes through. It’s nothing against you; honestly, how would you know, right? I seem so happy on the outside, and I guess there’s no reason for me not to be. I guess you’d never suspect and you still don’t realize it, but I want to tell you everything. I want you to know what happens during my day, even when I say “Nothing.” I want you to know why I can’t sleep at night, why I’m constantly looking at my phone and why sometimes I just want to be alone. You’ll see that my world isn’t all rainbows and butterflies, that I do appreciate all you do for me, and even if I don’t show it sometimes I couldn’t imagine being without you. And, Mom, as sad as it is to say, you’ll finally realize that my smiles are hardly ever real anymore. Shantelle Chan is a Grade 12 student at Dr. Charles Best Secondary in Coquitlam.

LETTERS ANTIBULLYING EFFORTS ARE HEARTFELT
Re: “#antibullying is too trendy,” My Generation teen column, Friday, Dec. 6. To Joey Chan: I read your column; it is very well written and you have put a lot of thought into the content. You are very right. A lot of people jumped on the anti-bully bandwagon and it got to be “cool” to be against bullying. Facebook and Twitter allow it to happen and the phrases to those suffering are clichés — “I’m here for you” — but not all of the people who say those words are just saying them. Some of us do mean them. Some of us try our hardest to stop harassment. I’m one of those who have tried. I have met with New York State Channel WIVB 4 news anchor Lou Raguse in an effort to expose the horrible things out there on Facebook, and I spend at least an hour a day reporting offensive content. However, to succeed, we need more people saying, “This is not acceptable” and truly meaning it and putting some time into the
effort to stop it. Carol Todd is a wonderful lady and has been working non-stop trying to get legislation into place that will help prevent tragedies. It takes a lot of time, energy, and effort. We need people like you to write more columns and support the cause. It is so very true that a lot of people just say what people want to hear; now we need strong young people like yourself to speak out and mean what they say. I have no problem with calling schools, parents or authorities for any child who needs help; in fact I have done just that. I have helped many on Facebook individually. There are a lot of us that do help those in need, that’s why we made the ATRT (Amanda Todd Reporting Team) in the first place, to help others. There were many successes and some failures but we have to be the change we want to see and you know how people say “I wish someone would do something?” Well we have to be that someone who does it. Joey, keep your writing up and make people think, wake them up, and if you ever need help you know where to find us on Facebook. Christine Budnack Buffalo, NY
LEFT-TURN SIGNAL IS TOO SHORT
To Coquitlam mayor and councillors: I am writing to express my concerns regarding the short time frame for a vehicle to turn left on Johnson, from the two dedicated left lanes on the Barnet Highway, in order to access the West Coast Express (WCE) station parking lot in Coquitlam on weekday mornings. Given the heavy volume of traffic that turns left on to Johnson from the two left lanes of Barnet on weekday mornings, the duration of the left turn signal is surprisingly short. On average, only three or four vehicles complete the left turn in the time frame allowed by the current traffic controls, and the wait for the next left turn signal is several minutes. In reality, the duration of the left-turn signal is even shorter than it appears (or is intended to be) because of the dangers associated with making a lane change, from the outside to the inside lane on Johnson, after a vehicle has cleared the intersection. In practice, it is safe to access the road from Johnson to the WCE parking

lot only from the inside left lane on Barnet. The simple solution to this issue is to increase the duration of the left-turn signal at the Barnet and Johnson intersection. Unfortunately, based on my past experiences with City of Coquitlam staff, it would be pointless to bring this matter to their attention. By raising this issue with the mayor and council, I hope our elected municipal representatives will help to alleviate the frustrations of WCE commuters and convince staff in the appropriate department at City Hall of the need to modify traffic controls at this busy intersection. A Coquitlam woman has been found guilty of murder in the death of her boyfriend at a trailer park in 2010. On Dec. 5, a B.C. Supreme CourtjuryinNewWestminster found Darlene Daigle guilty of second-degree murder in the death 38-year-old Peter Markus. The 46-year-old was arrested and charged a couple of weeks after Markus was found dead on Jan. 4 2010, in his Wildwood Park trailer home. During trial, the jury was told Markus was last seen alive in the early morning

Markus’s cellphone, which he had last used shortly after midnight on Jan. 1, was also recovered at her home. Daigle’s Toyota Corolla was examined and blood was found in the driver’s area of the car. Help ‘cram the cruiser’ MOUNTIES SEEK FOOD DONATIONS FOR SHARE
Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com Normally their cars are filled with crooks and other criminals, but for a day, one Coquitlam RCMP cruiser will be stuffed with donations. Local Mounties are hosting an inaugural “Cram the Cruiser” food drive for the SHARE food bank this Saturday. The public is invited to bring a non-perishable food donation to help fill up the police car. “I know it’s hard for some to make ends meet, especially those in need during this time of the year,” said RCMP Const. Justin Christofferson, who will be taking part in the campaign. “This is why my colleagues and I are lending a hand to the food bank by doing the food drive.” The event takes place Saturday (Dec. 14), between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the parking lot between Superstore and the tanning salon (3000 Lougheed Hwy.), at Westwood Street and Lougheed in Coquitlam. The public is being asked to look for Christofferson, Const. Chris Payette and RCMP volunteers collecting
food donations near a police car parked in the lot. “We are so grateful for the support of our Coquitlam Mounties,” said SHARE CEO Martin Wyant in a statement. “This is a time of year when hunger is more keenly felt by the vulnerable members of our community. Thank you, everyone, for helping us build strength in people who need our help.” Anyone who wants to contribute is being asked to pick up one or two extra non-perishable food items while they are out grocery shopping. ••• Port Moody police are looking to speak to the driver behind an alleged hit-andrun earlier this week. Police said the incident happened just before 10 a.m. Tuesday as a 17-year-old was crossing northbound across St. Johns Street and Moray Street using the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection. The girl, who had the walk signal, was making her way through the crosswalk when a white mini van came up to the intersection and made a right turn southbound. According to police, the teen was able to jump away from the mini van after being alerted by another motorist. She was hit in the thigh, but did not receive any serious injuries. Police alleged the vehicle did not slow or stop and continued to drive eastbound. While no licence plate

number was taken down, the driver was described as a Caucasian man with grey hair, a white beard and glasses, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. Police want to speak to the driver of the van and the driver of a newer model blue Toyota Landcruiser who alerted the pedestrian during the incident. Scotiabank matches donations to SHARE Jeremy DEUTSCH
jdeutsch@thenownews.com For the good folks at Scotiabank in the Tri-Cities, it wasn’t enough just to collect the coins. The company and employees wanted to take their holiday giving to the next level. So once again this year, Scotiabank has offered to match the donations for the
Caring for Tri-Cities Kids campaign up to $5,000 given at the five participating locations in the community. North Road and Austin branch manager Bill Leung said the bank wanted to do more than just offer its branches as a place to collect coins, noting they’ve even put together goody bags to entice people to donate.
“It’s a good way to show people Scotiabank is an important member of our community not just from a business perspective but from a community welfare perspective,” he said. Leung explained the campaign is a good fit for the bank and its employees, since most live in the Tri-Cities. The annual Caring for Tri-Cities Kids fundraiser, a partnership between the Tri-Cities NOW and SHARE Family & Community Services Society, allows SHARE to buy Christmas presents for local children whose parents are
unable to do so. It replaces the Tri-Cities NOW’s Pennies for Presents campaign, which has raised more than $150,000 since its inception in 1990. The new campaign still welcomes coins like toonies, loonies, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, as well as cheques, and also allows donors to buy a gift card at Coquitlam Centre to donate to the cause (details are available at the mall’s information booth). Leung said it was an easy decision to support SHARE, adding the need at the food bank increases each year.
“There are more and more people in our community that require the services of SHARE, we recognize that,” he said. “It’s just an organization that we feel good about supporting one way or another.” In all, five Scotiabank locations in the Tri-Cities are taking part in the campaign, including: • 953 Brunette Ave. • 465 North Rd. • Coquitlam Centre • 4100-2850 Shaughnessy St. • 2501 St. Johns St. Other drop-off locations
include several RCMP and community police stations throughout the Tri-Cities: • The RCMP detachment at 2986 Guildford Way • Burquitlam Community Police Station, 560 Clarke Rd. • Ridgeway Community Police Station, 1059 Ridgeway Ave. • PoCo Community Police Station, 2581 Mary Hill Rd. • Port Moody Police Station, 3051 St Johns St. Donations are also accepted at the Tri-Cities NOW’s office at 216-3190 St. Johns St. in Port Moody.

TOTL Building and Design Ltd.
Greet the CP Holiday Train
The CP Holiday Train will make stops in PoCo and Port Moody on Monday, Dec. 16. Stops are scheduled for 5:25 p.m. in Port Moody, and 7:15 p.m. in PoCo, and both cities have activities planned around the visit. In Port Moody, the fun starts at 4:30 p.m. at Trasolini Field behind the Port Moody Recreation Complex at 300 Ioco Rd. Ward off the cold with a cup of hot chocolate, then cosy up to the roaring bonfire. Getting a little overheated? Grab a scoop of seasonal eggnog ice cream. Port Moody’s Community Band will be on hand to fill the night with festive holiday music. The most important thing to remember before you leave home? Dress in layers, grab the Santa hat and don’t forget a food or monetary donation for SHARE. When the train arrives at 5:25 p.m., it will have a very special visitor on board, as well as tens of thousands of LED lights adorning 14 brightly decorated rail cars. At 5:45 p.m., a modified box car will become a stage for two Canadian performers, Juno-award winning singer songwriter Melanie Doane and Juno-nominated crooner Matt Dusk, who will sing classic holiday tunes. After you wave goodbye to the train, make your way to Port Moody City Hall (100 Newport Dr.) for even more holiday cheer, including carollers. Chow down on chili, pizza, chowder and popcorn, then get your sugar fix by decorating a cookie. Free screenings of Disney’s holiday film Prep & Landing will show in the Inlet Theatre. The goal of this event is to collect as much money and food as possible for the SHARE Family & Community Services Society. Port Coquitlam is also rolling out the red carpet for the train, linking its arrival to the city’s centennial and a free holiday skate at 6:15 p.m. at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex. The train is set to arrive at the West Coast Express Station at 2125 Kingsway Ave. at 7:15 p.m. “What a fitting end to our year of centennial celebrations,” Mayor Greg Moore said in a press release. “We encourage everyone to come out to enjoy some holiday cheer, and show your community spirit and generosity with a donation of food, cash or a toy.” This is the CP Holiday Train’s 15th anniversary. The three-week, 10,000kilometre journey began Nov. 26 in Beaconsfield, Quebec and will visit more than 150 communities before its final performance in Port Coquitlam featuring Doane and Dusk, from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
Free cocoa and cupcakes will be served and firefighters will be collecting donations of food, money or unwrapped
toys for SHARE. Free parking will be available at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex and in the east part

of the WestCoast Express parking lot. For details about the PoCo events, visit www. portcoquitlam.ca/100.

Latest Hobbit journey is not worth taking THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

our feet go numb; your bladder screams for release; your throat longs for a single drop of water — long road trips can be an agonizing experience, but by comparison the new Hobbit film makes the former discomforts seem like a firstclass plane ride. The director, Peter Jackson, ups the torture in all of these bodily displeasures considerably. The screen adaptations of Tolkien’s revered “Middle Earth” series have finally been exhausted and suc-
cumb to the abysmal pit of the franchise’s equivalent of Rocky 5. The original trilogy was heartfelt and epic. The fourth film, The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey, was lighthearted and entertaining (despite losing some of the steam of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy) but none of the previous four entries could have prepared me for this colossal miscalculation — a failure from beginning to end. I desperately wanted Smaug to excel; instead, it is desolate and one of the year’s most disappointing films. Most of the movie’s flaws derive from the Hobbit series’ division of one story into three separate strands, each taking three hours to tell. But one third of a story does not have a three-act structure; it is by nature only one act.
Consequently, it is impossible for Smaug to be a satisfying standalone work. It lacks a beginning, middle and end (story wise). At the start of the film, Jackson seems stranded, unaware of how to set his story in motion. He decides to begin with a flashback of Gandalf and Thorin seated in a tavern rehashing a discussion regarding the purpose of their journey. This opening scene offers no hook for the viewer and does little to progress the story. And for the first hour the plot lazily sits there, stuck in the mud of Jackson’s self-indulgent and overlong running time. In the sequel to An Unexpected Journey, the ensemble of dwarves and a single Hobbit are midway on their journey to take back the riches of Erabor from an avaricious and tyrannical dragon who long ago stole CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

COMMUNITY&LIFE
eing a man, I am sometimes mistakenly slotted into the stereotype of a last-minute shopper. Nothing could be further than the truth. Hurriedly pushing my way through the crowds at the mall on Dec. 24th is not how I want to spend the eve before Christmas. Therefore, to help you avoid this ordeal I am offering you some stocking stuffer ideas for the hobby chef on your list.
Zester This is a hand tool that removes the aromatic coloured segment of the peel from citrus fruits while leaving the white bitter pith part on the fruit. Great for adding extra citrus flavour to almost any recipe, or to enhance garnishing presentation. We like our holiday ornaments and party dresses sparkly. Our face? Not so much.
You knew the inevitable was coming: an invite to an ugly sweater party.
Aversion to shimmer is what makes us skeptical about products deemed “illuminating” or “luminizing.” Call us crazy but a face full of glitter is a far cry from a J.Lo glow.
But with the plethora of options, it seems that 6&"B&F E#(ICDB&F CD;C BE C;$>' I&#AFD C# EC;&" #AC D;E 9I$#(I B&$GI;EB&F<' "BH6$A<C+ =DBE year, you can DIY the fug with with the Ugly Christmas Sweater Kit. Finally, we’ve found a keeper for the lit-fromwithin look: Josie Maran’s Argan Illuminizer (included in the Escape to Morocco Holiday Lights & Brights Set. We love it mixed into our foundation but it’s also gorgeous as a highlighter. Another beautiful thing about this formula? It’s rich in moisturizing, vitamin E-rich argan oil. $35 at www.sephora.com

I have gone through many poorly made garlic presses in the past, but there is one brand that has never let me down. I highly recommend the Switzerland made “Zyliss” brand. I have literally crushed hundreds of cloves with this brand, for the past five years, without fail.

Silicone spatula Silicone kitchen tools like spatulas and bowl scrapers are great because they can withstand high temperatures and they are very flexible. Fantastic for omelets, where ones made of rubber or plastic would melt in the hot pan.

Dough scraper A flat-edged tool that easily scrapes dough or flour together on the counter. They are available in metal or plastic. Great for anyone that likes to bake.
Put time back in your hands
Lemon reamer A wooden hand held tool to efficiently juice lemons or limes. I hope this helps relieve some of your shopping burdens. The kitchen sections of department stores and smaller specialty stores are filled with many great gift ideas — who knows, you may even run into me! Dear Chef Dez: I noticed that many chefs on TV use a flat grater that lays across a bowl to remove zest from citrus fruits. Is that the best way to do this? Charlotte E. Surrey Dear Charlotte: I actually recommend using a “zester.” It is a hand tool that has five little circular blades at the end. When it is dragged across a citrus fruit, it produces beautiful curls of zest while leaving the bitter pith behind. Although flat graters remove the zest in small bits, and thus prevent further chopping, there is no guarantee that
Choir sings Dec. 17 Get into the spirit of Christmas at the new City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library with the Emanuel Romanian Baptist Church Choir. Regular toll rates For the last year, as construction along Highway 1 has been wrapping up, drivers who registered early have been eligible for low introductory toll rates. In January, with extra lanes open west of the Port Mann Bridge and drivers able to save even more time, the low introductory rates will be replaced with regular toll rates. For drivers already paying the regular toll rates, there is no change. Tolls will stay the same.

THE TRI-CITIES NOW | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013
Caring for Tri-Cities Kids Since 1990, the Tri-Cities NOW has partnered with the SHARE Family & Community Services Society to raise money for local kids. SHARE uses the funds to buy Christmas gifts for children from low-income families whose parents cannot afford to do so. This year, we have some exciting changes to announce. While pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies, toonies, bills and cheques are still welcome, we’ve partnered with Coquitlam Centre to offer Tri-Cities residents another way to give — by purchasing a gift card to donate to the cause. We’ve also updated the name of this year’s campaign to Caring for Tri-Cities Kids, in recognition that the old name, Pennies for Presents, focuses on a coin no longer in circulation. The goal is the same, however. We want to help SHARE buy gifts for kids who would otherwise go without, to offer them the joy of the holiday season other families take for granted. There are several ways to help. Cash donations are accepted at the locations below, including the Tri-Cities NOW’s office in Port Moody and all Scotiabank locations in the Tri-Cities.We are pleased to have Scotiabank partner with us again this year. All money collected at their locations will be matched by Scotiabank to maximum of $5000. And if you’re in Coquitlam Centre buying a gift card, you will have the opportunity to donate another one to Caring for Tri-Cities Kids. It’s that easy.

their homeland. They encounter gigantic spiders, bitter elves and, in the payoff, the hibernating and menacing dragon himself. There is so little plot, character development and tension in this film; every scene and montage bear the weight of only a transitional sequence to the overlong and joyless CGI action set pieces.
Jackson has made a picture as mindless, gratuitous and cynical as Michael Bay’s Transformers series. Don’t be fooled by the abundance of meaningless, monologue sermons that employ obscure old English words without ever establishing a theme. They just preach for preaching’s sake. Bilbo should have remained content to abide in the glories of his comfortable and luxurious Hobbit hole.
It would have been wise for Jackson to act on his own hero’s advice: “I should have never have come … I don’t know what I was thinking.” The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a journey not worth taking.
