As we move into spring, the days are getting longer and the weather warmer. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of all the new amenities in your community. The City of Coquitlam is committed to ensuring its residents have as many opportunities as possible to get and stay active. We’ve been investing in your future, with recent improvements to our parks and facilities across the City. In southwest Coquitlam, the newly opened Poirier Forum is a multi-purpose facility ideal for sports such as lacrosse, ball hockey and soccer and provides a great new space for community events like craft markets. Take your dog for a run in an off-leash park, catch a tournament at Town Centre Park or enjoy the fresh air on a hike through one of our many trails. Whether your interests are in fitness, yoga, arts and crafts, dance, swimming, woodworking or computers, there is always something new to learn or a new friend to meet through Coquitlam recreation. Now is the time to try it, live it, learn it!

Volunteer Services If you are interested in becoming a volunteer you must be 13 years of age or older, successfully complete the application process which includes an interview, criminal record and reference check, and attend an orientation training session. Recreation Inclusion Coquitlam Parks, Recreation and Culture strives to include participants of all ability levels and attempts to provide volunteer assistance to those individuals who require additional support.

Our volunteers assist with crafts, games and sport activities; they cannot provide personal care. Availability of volunteer support varies. Families looking for one-to-one support for registered programs need to complete an information form 2 – 3 weeks prior to the start of the program. HIKE: FIVE FALLS FUN ON BURKE MOUNTAIN (12 YRS +) This hike takes in no less than five significant waterfalls on Burke Mountain. Intended for experience hikers, the hike will start at the end of Harper Road ending with a steep down and up to take in the spectacular Crystal Falls. Total distance 16km. Elevation gain 1000m. at Pinecone Burke Provincial Park 514717 Su May 17 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. $8.00 HIKE: LOWER SLOPES OF BURKE MOUNTAIN (12 YRS +) Join us on a guided hike through a variety of forested trails in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park. The group will travel undulating trails taking in the reappearing spring vegetation in a mature second growth forest. Roundtrip distance is 5.5km with a cumulative elevation gain of 110m. at Pinecone Burke Provincial Park 512636 W May 27 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. $5.00 HIKE: MILLER RAVINE & THE CHINES (12 YRS +) Join us on a guided hike through the lush Miller Ravine then descend into the steep forested area of the Chines before regaining elevation to make a loop back to the starting point. On a clear evening, great views of the mountains to the north can be seen. Roundtrip distance is 4km with a cumulative elevation gain to 130m. at Miller Park Community School 512633 W May 20 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. $5.00 HIKE: BEGINNER HIKING PROGRAM (12 YRS +) This progressive hiking program will help you gain the confidence and stamina to hike to the top of the High Knoll in Minnekhada Park. Start the program off with an information session followed by a short walk. Progress with shorter hikes before the final hike to the High Knoll (Distance 10km, elevation gain 755ft). Diez Vistas, offers spectacular views of Vancouver’s waterways and mountains. The trail is steep and can be demanding (Distance 15km, elevation gain 455m). Start the program off with an information session followed by a short hike. Progress with shorter hikes before the final hike. Prior hiking experience recommended. OUTDOOR RECREATION Hiking programs require a waiver form. Visit coquitlam.ca/outdoors to find waiver form and information.. Levels of Intensity BEGINNER INTERMEDIATE CHALLENGE YOURSELF

HIKE: SUGAR MOUNTAIN & EAGLE BLUFFS LOOP (12 YRS +) This loop will take in a seldom walked route around Anmore. Starting at the Equestrian parking lot near Buntzen Lake, hike up to the Eagle Bluff viewpoint before traversing a brand new trail to Halvor Lunden and then down to Buntzen. Part two of the hike climbs up to the saddle and then follows the infrequently used trails of Sugar Mountain before returning to the start. Take in spectacular views along the way, on a clear day. This strenuous hike is intended for experienced hikers. Total distance 15.5km, total elevation gain 750m. at Buntzen Lake 514444 Su Apr 19 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. $8.00

TRAIL RUNNING TRAIL RUNNING: BEGINNER (12 YRS +) This program will include a series of evening runs in and around the hills above Coquitlam and Tri-Cities. Each week increase distance and trail difficulty. By the end of the series you will be comfortably running 10km + on various backcountry trails. Not only will you have a great workout, you will also become better acquainted with a huge network of trails close to the City. Prerequisite: Ability to comfortably run 5km continuously. Good trail running shoes, a headlamp, hydration, reflectors and a small pack is recommended. Locations will vary. 514551 W Mar 25 – Apr 22 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. $25.00 TRAIL RUNNING: INTERMEDIATE (12 YRS +) This series of runs is intended for those who have gone through the ‘Trail Running for Beginners’ or are comfortable running approx 1.5hrs on backcountry trails. Explore with ‘fast feet’ many trails the Tri-Cities have to offer. After completing this series, participants should feel confident enough to tackle many of the medium distance trail races that are held around the Lower Mainland. Good trail running shoes, a headlamp, hydration, reflectors and a small pack are recommended. Locations will vary. 514555 W May 13 – Jun 10 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. $25.00

TRX is a type of suspension training using resistance bands to tone and shape your muscles. This class combines the TRX suspension trainer in a boot camp style to target your core while toning your entire body.

MORNING BODY SHAPING

This class is one of a kind and it starts with a half hour of Zumba速 routines, followed by boot camp style exercise.
