Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com It will likely be a bull’s-eye for shoppers in B.C., as a major U.S. retailer opens up across the province this week.

Yesterday (Tuesday) marked the soft opening for 10 new Target stores, including the lone TriCities location in the Coquitlam Centre mall.

And when the first customers filed through the doors at 8 a.m., Target Canada president Tony Fisher was expected to be the first to greet them.

“It’s just an incredibly exciting time to be at

Target and have our first stores out west here,” he told the media on Monday.

The president was on hand to take the media through a guided tour of the Coquitlam store.

In all, 24 new Target stores will open in Western Canada by May 14, with a grand opening planned for May 24 that will be accompanied by the retailer’s first flyer.

Replacing the former Zellers store, Fisher said Target would be a “one-stop shopping destination” offering everything from personal apparel and accessories to grocery products, adding most CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

The race in Port Moody-Coquitlam REPORTER JEREMY DEUTSCH INTERVIEWS JOE TRASOLINI AND LINDA REIMER

NDP candidate Joe Trasolini is a former Port Moody mayor, and the incumbent.

Liberal candidate Linda Reimer is a Coquitlam city councillor.

Some childcare advocates have been pushing for $10-a-day daycare.

How would you address the daycare issues facing parents?

We’ve announced some help, but at this time $10a-day daycare would be in the neighbourhood of $2 billion; we just can’t afford it.

Hopefully in the future we might be able to do more, but right now that’s all we can afford.

We spend $290 million a year on childcare, up from $211 million in 2001.

The previous NDP government has focused on supporting unionized childcare, which drives up the costs.

We continue to build on our record of increasing spending on childcare. Over 5,000 licensed childcare facilities across the province receive funding.

With respect to $10-a-day childcare, we would have to look at the costing of that in order to make our decision.

We do know that building a strong economy will allow greater revenues that will be used toward health care, education, childcare and social services.

How would you, as an MLA, make government more transparent?

I think when reports are tabled they should be made public. Where there’s communication in the premier’s office, they should be recorded.

When monies are spent they should be made aware.

We have announced, in fact, to have a commissioner to review and approve government advertising much like the Ontario government.

That would give it transparency.

We are proposing to ban

NDPer Joe Trasolini union and business donations for elections. Those all go toward trying to address the many questions that are being asked about transparency in government.

How should large transit infrastructure projects be paid for?

If you’re talking about Metro Vancouver, we have TransLink.

We would change the governance of TransLink. Right now there is no representation from local government.

It’s an unelected group of people with no connection with the decision makers at the Metro Vancouver board who plan growth and shape communities.

I think if you look at my experience as a business owner, somebody who’s been in municipal politics for 15 years as a councillor, as mayor, chair of police board and been on the Metro [Vancouver] board and committees and been in the community for as long as I have being engaged, with the skills and experience, I think I have something to offer.

How would you, as an MLA, make government more transparent?

We have started posting all of our expenses online. We

Anytime we talk about transparency and accountability, we talk about providing information to the public in the forms that will best be suited for the public, such as on the Internet and in written print. As a city councillor in Coquitlam, I’ve been very transparent with my expenses. I have been contacted after the disclosure of some of my expenses and have provided citizens clarifications of my expenses, and I will continue to do that in my role

as provincial MLA. How should large transit infrastructure projects be paid for?

There’s a lot of controversy between constituents on how to do that and therefore our party position is we would like to work with the mayors’ council to come up with some funding options that will be placed out on a referendum in the November 2014 municipal elections. Those funding options would be voted upon and might provide some clarity for elected officials on how we ought to proceed.

What do you offer that the other candidates in the riding don’t?

I have been unusually open, accessible. I return all my e-mails, I return all my telephone calls; so I offer that to my constituents. In addition, as a provincial MLA I offer my years of experience as a city councillor. It’s really important because many of the statutes that we operate under municipally are actually provincial legislation so I think it’s very helpful in understanding being a provincial MLA, that your representative understands city issues.

Reimer and Trasolini debate riding issues TWO HOPEFULS THE ONLY ONES TO ATTEND MEETING IN BURQUITLAM

Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com Proving it’s a two-way race for the job of MLA in Port Moody-Coquitlam, just two candidates were on hand to square off at an allcandidates forum hosted by the Burquitlam Community Association.

The forum gave the roughly 70 residents

who turned out to Banting Middle School Thursday night a chance to hear the two main opponents’ views on a variety of topics.

When asked to defend a tax on banks and credit unions being proposed by the NDP, New Democratic Party candidate and incumbent MLA Joe Trasolini noted the Liberal government originally repealed the tax to spur hiring in the industry.

He suggested employment in the industry dropped, and then added that banks need to pay their fair share.

“I’m sorry, you know what, I’m not going to cry for banks,” Trasolini said.

His counterpart, Coquitlam city councillor and Liberal candidate Linda Reimer, argued the cost of the tax would just end up being

passed along to the consumer.

Sticking with the economic theme, both candidates weighed in on the potential impacts the construction of the Evergreen Line will have on local businesses for the three years it’s expected to be underway.

Reimer noted as a member of Coquitlam city council, the city has been working with the businesses along the line, adding she doesn’t want to see what happened to businesses a few years ago during the construction of the Canada Line along Cambie Street in Vancouver.

“We will continue to do whatever we can to facilitate their business and to assist them in maintaining the business they have,” she said.

Trasolini suggested there was a plan a few years back by TransLink to urge people working along major construction projects to buy their goods and services where they work, but the idea disappeared after the transit authority lost responsibility for construction projects.

He promised if re-elected to promote consultation and urge the Evergreen Line construction group to meet with community representatives and businesses.

There was also debate on other local issues like the future of the Riverview lands and the Coquitlam school district’s $12-million budget deficit.

Paul Geddes, the Libertarian Party candidate for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, isn’t pinning his hopes on election night victory. Instead, he’s running for MLA to bring about a philosophical change to the idea of government.

An economics instructor at Columbia College in Vancouver, Geddes sees the

government as an “unresponsive middle-man.”

More specifically, he wants to see the government out of the business of health care and education, and individuals given the choice of which kinds of service they want.

“We want to give people an opportunity to negotiate on their own for the particular services that they might

want,” he said.

He also clarified comments he made at a recent all-candidates debate about helping the less fortunate.

Geddes argued the government doesn’t trust citizens to be generous, adding most people are generous and want to help. However, he believes the government is not the right mechanism to

Instead he favours a system of competing charities to address the issues of poverty and help people struggling economically.

“We are making some headway,” Reimer said.

Trasolini said there should be an audit to find out what went wrong with the School District 43 budget, then argued teaching conditions in the classroom have deteriorated because on a lack of funding.

He said the NDP intends to spend $100 million to improve

classroom conditions.

The two candidates also came out with opposite views of the Foundation Skills Assessment tests given to B.C. students, with Reimer saying her party would not eliminate the tests.

“It’s just one tool in the toolbox; you can’t rely on the FSAs entirely,” she said.

Trasolini said he supports some form of testing students, but not the FSAs. The NDP candidate also usedthetopicoftheRiverview lands to blast the Liberals over plans to sell excess government property. He suggested government lands need to be leased to generate a revenue stream, not sold to balance the budget.

Reimer said the provincial

government plans on moving ahead with the recommendations from the Riverview Heritage Conservation Plan.

Trasolini was also asked to defend his party’s leader, Adrian Dix, regarding the backdated memo scandal from the 1990s.

He said Dix owned up to his mistake, seemingly forgiving him because of his age at the time, which was 35.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves … we have to be more charitable to each other,” Trasolini said.

But Reimer didn’t appear to buy the age excuse.

“To blame something because you were age 35, I’m not sure about that,” she said. “It doesn’t seem appropriate.”

Chief who oversaw Drover case dies

LEN MCCABE WAS ‘ONE OF THOSE GUYS THAT CAN DO ANYTHING,’ SON-IN-LAW RECALLS

Jeremy DEUTSCH jdeutsch@thenownews.com It was the story that shocked the entire nation and the sleepy community of Port Moody.

But the kidnapping and eventual discovery of 12-yearold Abby Drover back in 1976 might not have had a bigger impact on anyone other than the city’s police chief at the time, Len McCabe.

The chief had a daughter the same age, and for a longtime after the Drover case came to a close, he would personally pick up and drive the young girl to school.

“It affected him very deep-

“It was one of those things that stuck with him simply because of the resilience that Abby showed.”

Drover’s captor, Donald Hay, died last year in a psychiatric hospital in Saskatoon.

Macdonell said Hay was a suspect from the get-go because he was a known pedophile, and it was at McCabe’s insistence that police kept after Hay and didn’t give him too much of a break.

Macdonell also shared some of the lighter moments in McCabe’s policing career, like the time the Irishman hit a horse in his police car along Clarke Road hill.

McCabe, who served as Port Moody’s police chief for 16 years, died last week at the age of 87 at the Crossroads Hospice.

While the months between Drover’s disappearance and discovery were dark days for the community, Macdonell said her rescue remained one of the proudest moments in McCabe’s career.

“It really moved him. It touched him,” he said of the

Macdonell explained the department’s jail cell was small and full at the time, so McCabe handcuffed the miscreants to City Hall.

There were calls at the time for the officer to be charged with cruelty, but ultimately the five kids ended up being convicted and nothing came of the incident for McCabe.

“That was, ‘You lean on the bad guys and you give the good guys a break,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW, adding if you were a law-abiding citizen, he had all the time in the world for you.

Besides his dedication to police work, Macdonell said McCabe was the true patriarch of the family and a devoted father who would make sure he was home for all the big events.

An avid fisherman, the former police chief could be seen using his hands to build everything from a dock to doing renovations on his home.

“He was one of those

guys that can do anything,” Macdonell said.

Born in Ireland, McCabe moved to Canada in 1953.

He joined the Port Moody force in 1959, rising through the ranks to become police chief in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1986.

Macdonell said McCabe battled cancer for the final 15 years of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene, five children and 12 grandchildren.

The family is holding a public funeral service this Friday (May 10) at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Coquitlam, at 1636 Regan Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Crossroads Hospice Society.

The search for a new chief took the board across the country, as it received about 30 resumes from qualified candidates.

But the head of the board and Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay explained the police board first decided what it wanted in a candidate.

That profile meant surveying 30 stakeholders, from the police union to city council.

Clay said all indicators pointed back to Rattenbury, whom he described as having “amazing morals,” knowledge of the budget process, a deep understanding of the challenges facing police, and excellent labour

After a search across the nation, the Port Moody police board didn’t stray too far to find the city’s new top cop. On Monday, the board announced Chris Rattenbury as new chief constable for the 100-year-old department.

The long-time officer has been with the force for 23 years, after starting his career in 1982 with the Vancouver Police Department.

Rattenbury said policing has changed in recent years and he wants the force to be a leader in the transformation.

“I have a real vision [for] where I’d like to go in policing,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW, after a swearing-in ceremony Monday at the police station. More specifically, he said he wants to make the department more operationally and fiscally efficient.

On the operational side, he sees a future where certain parts of the department will integrate with specialty sections of other police forces, leaving the core patrol police work with the home agency.

Rattenbury has already knocked one item off his to-do list. The department recently signed on to the RCMP’s emergency response team (ERT). The force had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the beginning of the year with the VPD to join its ERT. However, shortly after, the VPD informed the Port Moody Police Department the MOU would expire at the end of June.

Dental clinic takes a bite out of misery

K

udos to the husband-wife dentist team of Kevin Lauwers and Candice Woodman, who plan to offer free dental services to local homeless people at a new clinic in PoCo, set to open in early July.

“We both grew up in this area and are very fond of the Tri-Cities,” Woodman told the Tri-Cities NOW. “I think sometimes people can get caught up with what’s happening overseas or in a different country. I think it’s important to always recognize local need.”

She’s right. There are plenty of people who need a helping hand in the Tri-Cities, especially members of the local homeless population.

Others have pitched in to make this project a reality, from electricians and plumbers who donated their time to dental professionals who gave equipment. The building materials were also given free of charge.

While groups like the Hope for Freedom Society and the Tri-Cities Homelessness & Housing Task Group have worked for years to alleviate conditions for the homeless, it’s great to see individuals coming forward to lend a hand.

As not-technically-a-recession-but-still-tough economic conditions continue, there’s sometimes not that much separating those who seem to be doing OK from those who are down and out. It’s nice to see Tri-Cities residents coming together to help pull the people who’ve hit bottom back up.

VICTIM SERVICES MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE Re: “Lending a hand to victims of crime,” Wednesday, April 24.

I came to tears when I read the story of Gail Bonner's retirement and the years she has given to victim services.

I know the importance of these people, what they give emotionally and spiritually — and certainly know what they save.

I have been a recipient of victim services in another small town in B.C. I was in a marriage for 25 years and beaten occasionally. We were both known in the community as contributors and had the “perfect” marriage; the last and worst time I was beaten I called 911, awakening after being knocked out and needing to go to the hospital.

The RCMP connected me with victim services the next day, and when I walked in the office the first thing the woman said to me was “You know that today your life has changed forever.”

I cried and knew I wasn’t going back to my home as I knew it. It was scary to know everything I knew was gone. I didn’t know where I would go, was shaky, couldn’t even go for groceries with my face bruised — it was too embarrassing.

In the meantime the RCMP charged my husband and placed a restraining order on him. He went to his mother’s, and cut off the power/phone to the house, etc. because everything was in his name. I lived there without service for two months.

In the end those words kept my chin up and kept me from going back — “my life changed forever.”

I moved to the Lower Mainland and haven’t looked back. If it weren’t for victim services and those words that I thought tore my life apart, I would have gone back to the only thing I had known.

Here are the ones to watch

T

here are 85 ridings being fought over in this election campaign, and trying to keep track of even half of them can be a daunting task for anyone not a political operative or a journalist assigned to election night duties. But in a close race that separates the top two parties by three percentage points or less (in other words, the usual B.C. election result), it’s safe to say that about 60 of those ridings are locks for either the B.C. Liberals or the NDP. The rest of them (again, in a close result) are in play, in terms of the chances of them being won by either party. Some tilt towards one party more than the other, and some are potential three-way races involving third party or independent candidates.

Of course, if the NDP hangs on to its lead in the polls and wins by five or six percentage points, the B.C. Liberals will be lucky to hang onto 20 of their existing seats. But history suggests elections in this province are usually much closer than that (and therefore more interesting to anticipate!).

There’s not enough space in this column to look at all the potential key races, but there a number of them in Metro Vancouver that may signal which party is headed for victory — and by how many seats — when all the votes are tallied. They are all currently held by the B.C. Liberals, and if they slip into the NDP’s hands it will indicate it’s all over for the ruling party. But if the B.C. Liberals can hold them, they may not be dead yet.

• Vancouver-Point Grey: this is ground zero of the election for both the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. Both parties are desperate to win here (more than one senior person from either party has told me if they don’t win this seat, they don’t win the election). Christy Clark

barely won this seat in the byelection (she won by 500 votes, compared to Gordon Campbell’s 2,300-vote winning margin in 2009) at the height of her personal popularity, and she’s less popular now. Her chief opponent is David Eby of the NDP, but the B.C. Conservatives are running a credible candidate in Duane Nickell, and he will likely drain votes from Clark.

• Vancouver-Fairview: a classic “swing” riding that has gone back and forth between the two parties over time.

The B.C. Liberals won by a little more than 1,000 votes last time and the NDP is running environmentalist George Heyman against incumbent Margaret MacDiarmid. Heyman is a former BCGEU president, and he’ll no doubt have a vast army of union volunteers working for him on election day. But the fact there is no B.C. Conservative candidate should work in MacDiarmid’s favour.

• Burnaby North: for some reason, low-profile Richard Lee of the B.C. Liberals keeps winning here, albeit by smaller margins (just 258 votes in 2009). The NDP’s Janet Routledge is his chief opponent, and the NDP has almost got this marked in their win column.

• Surrey-Tynehead: long-time B.C. Liberal MLA Dave Hayer isn’t running, leaving this one wide open. Two IndoCanadian newcomers, Avtar Bains of the NDP and Amrik Virk of the B.C. Liberals,

are squaring off, but given that Hayer only won by less than 1,600 votes and that a Conservative candidate is running, the NDP has to like its chances for victory much better than before.

• Maple Ridge Mission/Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows: is there a community in B.C. more polarized than Maple Ridge?

For years, elections in the region have gone down right to the wire. Last time, the NDP won MR-PM by 274 votes, while the B.C. Liberals won MR-M by a mere 68 votes. If either riding is at all close, it may be a sign the B.C. Liberals may be more popular than they now appear to be.

• North Vancouver-Lonsdale: on paper, this would seem like a fairly safe B.C. Liberal riding. Naomi Yamamoto won by 2,500 votes last time, but the NDP has won here before and long-time city councillor Craig Keating is running for the NDP. So, in a close race, the path to victory would seem to begin on the west side of Vancouver, take a brief detour to North Vancouver and head through Burnaby and down to Surrey. We’ll see which party can stick to that path with the most success.

LETTERS NDP HAS MADE VOTE CHOICE AN EASY ONE

With the election pending, I feel compelled to express my sincere gratitude to the NDP Party for so clearly coming out in support of our environment. By doing so, they have made my task as a voter an easy one.

The Liberal Party continues to skirt around the difficult issues at hand and in doing so is complicit in supporting irresponsible and unsustainable projects that would effectively lock B.C.’s economy into an environmentally devastating boom-and-bust scenario.

The forward-thinking NDP, however, have recognized that the time has come to build a secure and sustainable economy founded on viable jobs and healthy communities.

My vote goes to the NDP and a future full of hope for the environment and people of British Columbia.

READERS TAKE ISSUE WITH NOSHOW GREEN Re: “It’s a two-way race in this riding,” Friday, May 3.

I was not able to attend the allcandidates meeting in CoquitlamMaillardville last week, so I was looking forward to your reporter’s story.

I was interested in hearing about the Green Party candidate because I have had difficulty finding information on my own.

This is what I know: • He did not show up at the allcandidates meeting.

• He is the only candidate on the Green website who doesn’t have a photograph.

• He is the only candidate on the Green website who doesn’t have a personal biography.

• When you call the phone number on the website and want to leave a message, you get a strange response, to say the least.

I thought I must have the wrong number but when I redialed, I got the same message, or lack thereof. I don’t know what it is supposed to be, but it certainly does not provide any information.

I guess the headline is correct — there are only two serious candidates in this riding.

How disrespectful of the hundreds of other candidates throughout the province who are putting their lives on hold to campaign because they believe in the political process.

I won’t be voting Green, that’s for sure.

••• It’s important to be an informed voter, which is why I attended the all-candidates meeting for Coquitlam-Maillardville on April 30. I wish to thank the candidates for an entertaining and informative evening.

Unfortunately, the Green Party was represented by an empty chair. I, as were many others, was looking forward to hearing what “Ed” had to say.

He will continue to be a man of mystery, a name sitting in front of an empty chair.

If ordinary citizens in Coquitlam-Maillardville could make the effort to be there, surely someone who wants to be elected and has put his or her name on the ballot should have the courtesy to attend. I am left wondering, what kind of an MLA would a candidate who can’t be bothered to attend the all-candidates meeting in this riding be?

To add insult to injury, there was no apology forthcoming from a representative of the Green Party to address the issue of a no-show candidate on such an important evening. I guess it is only a two-way race in CoquitlamMaillardville — NDP versus Liberals.

Is this what the Green Party intended all along? If so, why bother at all?

••• I live in Coquitlam-Maillardville where we have three candidates in the provincial election. I’m familiar with the NDP and Liberal candidates, thanks to media interviews and the all-candidates meeting, but the Green candidate remains a mystery.

I fail to understand why someone would put their name forward and then disappear. But that appears to be exactly what the Green candidate has done. He has not provided information to the local media, and when I tried to call him to talk about issues that are important to me, I gave up after getting a strange message that didn’t even give his name.

Coquitlam to test UV-resistant asphalt PILOT PROJECT ON MARINER WAY WILL BE FIRST OF ITS KIND ACROSS THE GLOBE

The pilot project along Mariner will be the first instance in the world where the two technologies — EZ Street Asphalt with UV Reflective Technology — are combined for long-term testing.

“It’s a cold mix that goes down cold [and] potentially has significant advantages to it,” said Jamie Umpleby, Coquitlam’s director of engineering, at Monday’s council in committee meeting.

The UV Reflective Technology includes specialized binding material that makes it both UV and heat resistant. That specialized material allows for roadwork to be done at lower heat levels, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and increases durability. According to a city staff report, the new technology also reduces road noise, increases durability of the road sur-

face and saves on wasted asphalt. It’s also said to increase the safety of crews laying it down, since it doesn’t expose them to high heat and fumes, and to enhance road visibility.

The city will be required to pay the up-front installation costs — up to $150,000 — while all monitoring and testing costs will be picked up by the Mainroad Group.

“I love seeing how technology can make our roads safer, and this is a way that technology can do it,” Mayor Richard Stewart said Monday.

The clinic for homeless and low-income people was unveiled in Port Coquitlam over the weekend at the Northside Foursquare Church on Kingsway Avenue.

It represents a partnership between the Hope For Freedom Society and the local husband-and-wife tandem of Kevin Lauwers and Candace Woodman. Though the facility won’t be fully in use until July, last weekend’s unveiling was more about showing off the facility and highlighting its potential benefits.

“With some of our clients, one of the things that kept them from attaining employment and kept their self esteem in the ditch was their smile — they didn’t have one,” said Hope for Freedom Society managing director Rob Thiessen.

“It’s been recognized in other jurisdictions and in

The Port Moody couple will also offer their services — treating tooth pain, extractions, root canals and dentures — for no cost.

“We both grew up in this area and are very fond of the Tri-Cities,” said Woodman, 31. “I think sometimes people can get caught up with what’s happening overseas or in a different country. I think it’s important to always recognize local need.”

The facility will initially target the local homeless population. As that need gets filled, the service will broaden to other vulnerable

Faced with a lack of choices that suited his own political ideology, Brent Williams set out to spearhead his own party. Eight years later, Williams is running under the Your Political Party of B.C. banner in the riding of Port Coquitlam.

Williams is one of only two candidates running for the party, and initially ran as a Your Political Party of B.C. candidate in 2009.

He’s representing the party alongside his friend and party co-founder James Filippelli, who’s running in VancouverFalse Creek.

“We wanted to keep going with our interests after school and we always talked about politics,” said Williams, 30.

“We decided that you can’t really complain unless you do something to change.”

An SFU grad with a degree in economics, Williams said the main tenets of his party platform are to increase government transparency and accountability.

“We really want all government budgets and contracts published so anybody has easy access to information,” he said. “It’s our money, so we should see how it’s being spent.”

Williams said he hasn’t aligned himself with any of B.C.’s mainstream political parties because he prefers elected officials to vote based on conscience, rather than along party lines.

“We believe people should vote for the best interests in their community, and be allowed to vote with their conscience,” he said.

Fellow Port Coquitlam candidate Jogender Dahiya, who’s running for the B.C. Libertarian Party, did not respond to an interview request.

We would have enjoyed her great meals and all the holidays that she would make special, and every one of my birthdays would have continued to be a celebration.

But I realize that my mother has been with me all along. Though she has not been here to teach my children, I have tried to pass her lessons on to them. I can only give forward what she has given to me.

I often remind my patients to be good moms to themselves.

I ask them to channel their inner mom. We all have one deep down inside — just like the inner six pack. Some have to take a big breath in and dig deeper.

Most of us tend to be hard on ourselves — critical, judgmental and unforgiving. We could all use a little more compassion for others and ourselves. Many of us don’t give ourselves the care we need.

Here are four ways to be a better mom to yourself — direct orders from your inner mom.

Go to bed. Make sure you get enough rest. You’ll perform better at school and work in the morning, and you won’t get run down and sick.

Go out and play. Get some physical activity every day.

It’s essential for your emotional and physical wellbeing.

Eat your vegetables. Don’t skip meals and don’t ruin your appetite with junk food.

Though not everyone can eat an early breakfast, we all need regular snacks and meals to get through the day.

You can do better. Your inner mom may not be talking about your partner or spouse. See the best in yourself and be inspired to do your best. Move towards your positive potential.

Parents work hard to create memorable birthday party experiences for their children. But faced with the planning process year after year, throwing a memorable birthday bash can be challenging. This year, take much of the work out of the party process by following these tips for success * Change the menu. What is the food staple at kids’ birthday parties? You guessed it: pizza. Acid Erosion. What is it?

Q. Is laser therapy effective for stress?

Acid Erosion is the loss of tooth structure due to the action of acid acting on the surface of the tooth. Acid etches the tooth structure and when something rubs against this etched surface, the weakened tooth material is easily worn off. Typically, erosion lesions look like smooth, concave surfaces with a more yellow appearance as the enamel is worn off exposing the dentin underneath. On the biting surfaces of Dr. Myrna Pearce the back teeth, there may be “potholes” evident. When the dentin is excessively exposed, the teeth may become sensitive. Acid Erosion can be caused by acids entering the mouth from dietary sources such as juice, pop, citrus fruit, and red wine or by gastric acids from the stomach coming up because of acid reflux disease or bulimia nervosa.

Seeing one flea on your pet often translates into 100’s of flea eggs within your home.

HEALTH CONCERNS FOR YOUR PET: 1. Excessive scratching does not necessarily occur when your pet has fleas. However many pets are allergic to the flea saliva and in these cases intense itching occurs and pets often develop hot spots, balding and severe irritation.

2. Female fleas can consume 15 times their bodyweight in blood. Therefore, if left untreated and a flea infestation occurs D r. If your pet remains indoors and you do not have other pets that come in from the outside, environmental treatment is relatively easy. However, if your pet is outdoors regularly it may be impossible to completely rid the environment of fleas, though a flea treatment should still be attempted. Even strictly indoor pets can contract fleas. Humans or other pets may bring them inside or the fleas themselves can migrate indoors. PREVENTION: The best treatment is prevention. There are many successful monthly flea programs sold by your veterinarian that prevent the flea life cycle and infestations from ever occurring in the first place. jdeutsch@thenownews.com School District 43 officials knew they would have to make cuts to deal with a ballooning deficit, and on Tuesday employees and the public learned just how deep the reductions will be once the budget is done.

To make up for a $12.1-million projected operating deficit for the 2013/2014 school year, the district is looking at cutting six per cent of its staff across the board.

More specifically, it’s proposing to cut 142 pos-

itions within the district.

A further breakdown of the numbers has the district cutting 81 teachers, 19 teacher assistants/special education assistants/youth workers along with 32 clerical/custodial/IT and facilities positions and 10 from administration.

The staffing cuts add up to $11.5 million in savings.

Some of the positions being cut will be offset by attrition, with as many as 30 staff in various positions already putting in their retirement papers for the end of the year.

Anne answers your garden questions “Last year only 20 per cent of my carrot seeds grew. How can I increase the germination rate?”

Kimie Takusagawa via e-mail Carrots tend to have several problems with germination — sometimes all at the same time. First, the seed doesn’t keep well in storage, even if that’s only for one year. Seed stored in a refrigerator has a slightly better germination rate, but the safest tactic is always to plant fresh seed.

Unfortunately, the germination rate of carrots isn’t great anyway compared to the rate of most other vegetables. It’s best to plant twice as much carrot seed as you need.

Also, carrots germinate very slowly. This means that birds and anything else that eats carrot seed can clear it out before it gets around to sprouting. Birds are the most efficient carrot-seed eaters.

They will actually sit nearby, watch you planting it and scratch it up as soon as you’re gone.

Row covers are a good protection against birds and also against slugs, which love munching on carrot seedlings. Just make sure you don’t have a slug or two already hiding in the soil under the row cover.

“I have so little yard so I’m going to do a couple of pots this year. Do you think I could put some peas in a pot and have them grow nicely?”

Donalda Madsen via e-mail “Yes, you can grow peas in pots. But the size of the pot has to suit the height and the number of pea plants you’re going to grow in there. A deep pot is much better than a shallow one because peas like to stretch their roots down in cool soil. The lower part of the pot should be protected from heating up in hot sun.

Half-barrels are best of all.

But deep plastic pots that are 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) wide are good homes for medium-height pea plants.

Some types of peas have been developed especially for containers. The plants and the peas they produce are relatively small, but you can be more sure of a crop with these than if you try to grow a tall pea that really needs more root space.

Snow peas or pod peas are an especially good bet because you can jump the gun and eat some pods first, or wait and eat the peas inside. West Coast seeds offers quite a few peas especially bred for containers.

These include the heirloom shelling pea Little Marvel, described as having four-inch pods containing from six to nine peas on bushes 12 to

Another is Paladio, which has double pods on an 18-inch (45-cm) bush and doesn’t need trellising.

Also offered is the Dwarf Grey Sugar snow pea with two-tone purple flowers, reddish leaves and stems and a height of 30 to 36 inches (76 to 90 cm) and the snap pea Cascadia, with plants about two feet (60 cm) tall. Then there’s the Sugar Ann dwarf snap pea, with vines that also are two feet (60 cm) long and don’t need trellising.

Containers tend to dry out quickly. Make sure your peas get lots of water, especially when they flower and pods develop. You don’t need high-nitrogen fertilizer with peas, but they’d like an organic fertilizer containing phosphorus and potash.

“The flowers on our Phalenopsis orchid are mostly gone and we are left with five flowers and very long stems and roots. Should this be repotted and cut back with new soil? Can it be taken out to a sheltered patio with partial sun and much light?”

David Chia via e-mail Orchids are usually kept in the same pot for two years before repotting. Normally phalenopsis has surface roots. But if there are many roots and they’re wandering down the side of the pot it should be repotted.

Repotting should be every two years because the old bark begins rotting. The main element in the potting mix is orchid bark. You can buy this in garden centres. A little spaghnum moss is sometimes added to the bark but isn’t really necessary.

Orchid bark is used because Phalenopsis orchids need exceptionally good drainage. But they also need daily watering and misting because their roots are used to humid conditions in the native tropical forests where they grow on trees.

Overwatering kills orchids, so be discreet but frequent in watering.

The flower stems should be cut down to the base once the flowers have faded.

A position outside on your balcony could go wrong.

Phalenopsis likes day temperatures approximately 70 to 80F (20 to 25C) and night temperatures around 60 to 65F (15 to 20C).

Day and night temperatures will often be too cool

for your orchid.

I wonder which way your balcony is facing. Partial sun is OK if it’s the gentle morning sun. But sun from the west or south can be far too hot in summer for such a shade-loving orchid.

Your fertilizer should be diluted to one-quarter of the recommended strength.

Phalenopsis roots are very sensitive to salts and don’t demand heavy nutriments.

It’s also best to fertilize only once every two waterings.

“Each spring I get an increasing amount of moss. I de-thatched three years ago and overseeded last year. I aerate and apply dolomite lime, moss killer and fertilizer every spring and overseeded last year. Should I get my soil tested?”

Noel Gosal via e-mail Getting your soil tested is a good idea. It’s probably very acidic despite the dolomite lime — and moss loves acidic soil as well as moist, compact soil. Could yours be compacted by a heavy mower?

Moss also loves shade. If

partially sunny, you could try white clover. This is a drought-resistant nitrogenfixer.

For a shady lawn you might try Bugle (Ajuga reptans), Speedwell (Veronica reptans) or the green form of London Pride (Saxifraga x urbium).

remedies could help. For instance, have you ever topdressed your lawn with compost or good topsoil before re-seeding it? If your lawn is overly moist (clay soil perhaps?) you could top-dress with sand.

Lawns are always healthier and need less water when the grass is cut longer than normal.

FOX IN PLAYOFF FORM

The Terry Fox Ravens launched the senior boys rugby playoffs with a gritty 7-5 victory over Fraser Heights last week.

Bryce Rickaby’s convert bounced across the crossbar late in the first half, completing a scoring drive that saw Jason Shamatutu power into the end zone for a game-opening try.

Playing a role in Shamatutu’s score was Isaiah Stevens, who created just enough space for the fleet-footed runner to bolt for the five points.

Fraser Heights narrowed the gap in the second half but failed to find the equalizer.

Terry Fox now heads into the tier II Fraser Valley semifinals this week.

Turning in strong efforts were Taylor Poitras and Chris Borghardt, who adjusted to a new position admirably.

In junior boys action, the Ravens rumbled past Aldergrove 39-15, with two tries each from Taylor Poirtras ansd Mike West.

TAEKWONDO GOLD

Port Moody’s Ashlyn Arnold secured first place at the 2013 Canada Open Taekwondo championships in Toronto last week.

The victory, which featured international competition, also served as a qualifier for the Canadian cadet national team.

The 13-year-old entered the tournament having won nationals in January.

Arnold will now represent Canada as a member of the sparring team at the junior/ cadet Pan Am Taekwondo championships in Mexico this fall.

A student at Taeguek Taekwondo in Port Moody, the teen is planning to spend time in South Korea this summer to prepare for the Pan Am competition.

SFU WOMEN POP OUT

Needing a two-game sweep to claim the throne, the Simon Fraser University women’s softball team made it halfway before bowing out, falling 6-1 to Saint Martin’s Saints in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship final.

Coquitlam’s Cara Lukawesky pitched well in relief in both games, but the club just couldn’t sustain the drive over the doubleheader. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first game to preserve the win.

Lukawesky, a senior, was named a GNAC second team all star.

SFU finished second in the GNAC for a second straight year with a 30-23 record.

Now the pair are eager to build on it.

Dove and Morris-Reade experienced the highest level available to 15-year-olds when they joined the Fraser Valley Phantoms roster for the Esso Cup national under-18 female hockey championships last month in Burnaby.

Amongst the youngest on the squad, the pair had their eyes opened, and then opened some eyes as well, at the spotlight event.

Red-hot bats

Max Hollingworth is hammering his way to a hot start.

The Coquitlam Reds outfielder lashed out four hits over two days — not that impressive on the surface — including his league-leading fifth home run, drove in six runs, stole two bases and scored five times in a pair of doubleheaders on Vancouver Island on the weekend.

In Nanaimo on Saturday, the Reds pulled out a 2-1 win in the opener, with Hollingworth stealing second and third en route to scoring the decisive run in the seventh. Ryan Mose was sharp in six-and-a third innings, fanning 10 Pirates.

In the nightcap, Hollingworth went 2-for-5 and pounded a three-run homer in the 10th to lift Coquitlam to a 5-2 win.

On Sunday in Parksville, the Royals eked out a 7-6 decision off a home run in the seventh. The reliever who gave up the homer, Austin MacDonald, stayed on the mound for the second game and was near-perfect in a one-hit 12-0 victory.

Hollingworth was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in.

“We deserved to win that game so badly, we threw everything at them,” noted MorrisReade. “It was incredible how close we came to making the semifinal and playing even with a very-hyped Ontario team.”

Prior to the tournament the pair served as affiliate players to the Phantom all season long, with regular call-ups.

Over those games each had to establish both a place and a role on the team, but both were happy in how they progressed.

“My role was mostly defensive,” said Dove. “I had to just keep them away from our net and clear the puck from the front.”

“On my regular team I’m a goal scorer,” added MorrisReade. “But I’m not a finesse player — I tend to get the dirty goals. The crease is my zone.”

Their routes in the sport have been mirror opposites — Morris-Reade started in female hockey and switched to play with boys this past season, while Dove’s beginnings were with boys, but in recent years she made the move over to the Tri-Cities Predators female program.

“It was difficult this year, I don’t know how to put it into

words,” noted Morris-Reade of her inaugural season with a PoCo boys midget team.

“It was a big switch for me [and] it was harder mentally.

You don’t have the girls locker room where as a team you get pumped up, so I had to do that myself. I enjoyed the experience all in all.”

A triplet with two brothers, the sibling competition fueled her passion for the sport at an early age.

“I have two brothers so I like the whole physical part of [hockey] and how every moment of the game is different.”

Dove’s journey saw her shift to the Tri-Cities Predators’ program two years ago after starting hockey back in Ontario at the age of six.

The benefits of playing and practicing among the boys was countered by the camaraderie and acceptance found on girls teams. As the girls programs improved, the on-ice benefits have grown, too.

What excites the girls now is being a part of the new wave of B.C. girls hockey, where a breakthrough is conceivably around the corner.

“We are making strides,” said Morris-Reade. “I think the girls would agree we’re closing the gap.”
