FOR THIS DAY CDA Rhetoric Students Gather for “Be Lifted” Group

by Mrs. Shannon Burton, CDA Parent Thirty-four CDA high school students showed up at our house on the evening of September 9th for Be Lifted, a student led Bible study. I wasn’t really sure what to expect as I set out snacks on the kitchen table and made room for a few kids in our living area. I was blown away by how many students came and how kind and respectful each one was. After visiting for a few minutes, they entered into a time of worship led by Logan, Faith Anna and Kathryn Crawford. It was clear that most of these students have a deep relationship with Jesus by their attitude of worship. Many eyes were closed, and hands were raised as they were only focused on our Savior. It was the sweetest sound as the praises were truly being lifted up to God. Then senior Olivia Harrison talked to the kids on tithing. As I heard her begin, I have to admit I wondered about this subject with teenagers. It was such a beautiful thing to hear a young adult her age encouraging her peers to give back to the Lord what is already

His. She talked about all the blessings that come from taking the first fruits of their wages, time, and resources and giving it back to the Lord. She shared a recent personal experience where she was frustrated because it seemed she was spending most of her money on going out for food with friends and the money was running out quickly. She told her mom how empty it all felt, and her mom encouraged her to start tithing. She told Olivia to watch and see the blessings the Lord would bring her way by posturing her heart and life in an attitude of generosity. I don’t think there was any other better way to encourage our kids in this spiritual discipline than to hear it from one of their own friends! I was also overcome by the way our students joined in discussion at the end of the talk. I am so used to our kids coming home from church small group and sharing that they are the only ones who will interact when a question is asked. Last night was evidence that the CDA model works! When Olivia finished her talk and asked if there was any discussion, about 20 different kids shared their hearts with something they had been learning lately from the Lord. I know this is because they are encouraged and trained at CDA to make public speaking and discussion a habit. By the Rhetoric level, these kids are able to enter into this beautifully, offering great insight for others to hear. They ended the night by talking about different ways that they could go out into the community and serve. They talked about wanting to be a light not only at a night of worship like last night, but also making a difference out in the community. God is truly raising up a generation of warriors that will positively affect the kingdom for Him! _____________________________________

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
