The celestial show saw the lunar disc almost completely cast in shadow as it moved behind the Earth, reddening 97 per cent of its face. It was visible throughout North America and parts of South America, with later parts of the show visible in Polynesia, Australia and northeast Asia. Pictures have been shared of the red moon, known as the ‘beaver blood full micro moon’, from around the world, showing various degrees of totality.

They were spotted sitting on the second ring of the ancient gladiator stadium at about 05:30 local time. But entry to the almost 2,000-yearold landmark is prohibited overnight. And while the drinks and the scenic surroundings may have been enjoyable at the time, it is unlikely to be something they repeat.
