Worldwide Cobber Network With 32,000 alumni across the nation and globe, the Cobber community extends well beyond the borders of our campus. Cobbers worldwide connect to network, socialize, learn and support each other and the college.

ConcordiaCollege.edu/goldgivers Launched in fall 2016, the GOLD (Givers of the Last Decade) Society is a young alumni leadership giving group focused on monthly recurring gifts. Alumni who make a monthly contribution at a set level receive certain perks: a welcome gift, bookstore discounts, event invites, and special messages from the president.
Scholarships
Scholarship gifts have a direct impact on today’s students and their ability to afford a Concordia education. Scholarships may be endowed or given as a one-time Legacy Scholarship.
Science Renovations The Integrated Science Center will open for the start of classes in fall 2017. Faculty and staff will move into their new spaces later this summer. Finish work is already underway in many parts of the complex, with about 150 workers on site each day.

Corn Feeds The Corn Feed tradition began in 1974 with events in the Twin Cities and Moorhead. Do-It-Yourself Corn Feeds continue to be a hit among Concordia family and friends, as alumni host them in their local areas. This year, we have Corn Feeds planned across the country and warmly invite current and potential students to gather with alumni at the one nearest to their home. Each event is personalized by the event hosts, but rest assured that there will always be corn and Cobber community! Want to plan your own Corn Feed, or similar event? Everyone is welcome at International Day! International Day is a gathering of roughly 2,000 villagers, staff, parents and guests. It is also a day that we welcome back former villagers and staff and invite them to “renew their passports” by reliving some of their favorite memories. International Day will be held from 1-5 p.m. at Waldsee, the German Language Village (8659 Thorsonveien NE, Bemidji, Minn.), and is open to the public. Let Dr. Polly Kloster, associate professor of nursing, and Dr. Gay Rawson, professor of French, lead you on this mixed adventure of city and country life as you tour Vietnamese temples, archaeological sites and the Cambodian countryside. Ride a xe loi (motor cart) amid the bustling streets of Saigon or sampan (wooden boat) through the canals of Cai Be’s colorful floating market, on your way to museums and French colonial palaces.
Celebrating 40 Years of Salolampi and 30 Years of Les Voyageurs Concordia Language Villages is celebrating 40 years of language and culture at Salolampi, the Finnish Language Villages. The official celebration will be held prior to International Day on July 7 and will also recognize the 100th year of Finland’s independence. The event will feature a greeting from a representative from the Finnish Embassy. On Aug. 11, a special luncheon will be held to celebrate 30 years of Les Voyageurs, a French wilderness camping experience based on the history of the French Canadian fur trade.

Alumni Achievement Award Recipients
The National Alumni Board recognizes alumni who are notably carrying out the mission of the college and who have distinguished themselves in their careers and service to others by conferring upon them the Alumni Achievement Award (alumni of more than 20 years) and the Sent Forth Award (alumni of less than 20 years). We also honor alumni of any age who are devoted to local community service with the Called to Serve Award.
Mary (Sorenson) Ranum ’78 is chair of the board at Fredrikson & Byron, P.A. Ranum joined the Minneapolis law firm in 1984 becoming a partner in 1990, chairing the firm’s real estate practice group. Ranum became the first board chairwoman in 2010, making her one of few female law firm leaders nationally. She served on the board of directors of The Advocates for Human Rights and assists OneVillage Partners, a nonprofit in Sierra Leone, West Africa. As a member of the Concordia College Board of Regents, she recently co-chaired a task force exploring new ventures for Concordia. She has also been noted as an industry leader and volunteer of the year.

Sent Forth Award Recipients Dr. Meelad Dawlaty ’04 is the youngest faculty member in the department of genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where he teaches graduate school curriculum and mentors doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. He leads a research program concentrated on understanding the epigenetics of stem cells and cancer with a focus on enzymes that modify DNA and regulate gene expression to define cell fate during development. His work has been published in multiple scholarly journals. Dr. Susan Webb Yackee ’97 is a tenured professor of public affairs and political science and the director of the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 2015, the university named Yackee a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in honor of her exceptional research contributions. An award-winning expert on policymaking, regulation and bureaucratic politics, Yackee’s work is published in many academic journals.

Concordia College is both rooted in the Lutheran theological tradition and open to students from a variety of backgrounds, joining us in a common educational mission that ultimately seeks to serve our neighbor in love. An ELCA task force has drafted a mission identity statement for the 26 ELCA colleges. President Craft has charged a campus committee to review their work and our own mission identity. Ultimately, summer efforts will seek to provide a coherent narrative of all the faith expressions active at Concordia such as Campus Ministry; Dovre Center for Faith and Learning; Forum for Faith and Life; Lorentzsen Center for Faith and Work; and the Faith and Leadership concentration.

Dr. Philip Noss ’61 served more than 40 years in Bible translation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon (ELCC), the Eugene A. Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship of the American Bible Society, and the United Bible Societies with Bible translation projects in 34 African nations in 200 languages. He earned a doctorate in African languages and literature from the University of WisconsinMadison and taught in that department, the first of its kind in the world. Noss founded the Gbaya Translation Center, serving as its translation exegete, and established programs in African languages and literature at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Dr. Allan Carlson ’61 is widely recognized at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the U.S. Department of Energy and the world as a leading expert in neutron cross section data development and evaluation. As the foremost U.S. physicist for the standards on the effective cross sectional area of the nucleus of an atom, his work is vital for understanding the performance of nuclear power reactors, nuclear defense systems and nuclear medicine applications. Carlson worked for Gulf General Atomic, the General Atomic Division of General Dynamics, as a research assistant in physics at the University of Wisconsin and the Argonne National Laboratory. Karan Armstrong-Friedrich ’63 trained under operatic experts Lotte Lehmann, Fritz Zweig and Tilly de Garmo. She made her debut at the San Francisco Opera and built her repertoire at the New York City Opera and in many opera houses across the U.S. In 1974, she made her European debut and in 1986, she and her director husband, Götz Friedrich, co-founded The American Berlin Opera Foundation, Inc., which awards scholarships to American singers wishing to study at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Armstrong is also recognized as a champion of early 20th century opera. She gives master classes and most recently performed at the Komische Oper Berlin.
