GREETING

GREETINGS FROM CONCORDIA COLLEGE Greetings from Concordia College and welcome to our 2017-18 series of cultural, musical and educational events designed to inspire, educate, inform and entertain. As in prior years, our series begins with the Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium: “Reformation: Transforming the World One Door at a Time,” which this year celebrates Martin Luther and the 500 years of Reformation – its impact on our world: our past, our present and our future. Our 91st annual Christmas Concert continues our long tradition of sharing the promise of Christmas through music. The many and enriching facets of the liberating arts will be found within these pages that reflect a carefully selected series of visual and performing arts, lectures and presentations performed by our students, our faculty and renowned guests from across our region, country and world. Please join us and experience the life-affirming impact of the cultural arts. Bruce W. Vieweg Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Concordia College

LANGSTON HUGHES PROJECT 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 Centrum, Knutson Campus Center Tickets: $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18 The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia performance featuring the Ron McCurdy Quartet of Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite “Ask Your Mama,” his homage to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at the beginning of the 1960s. It is a 12-part epic poem scored with musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel, boogie woogie, African drumming, and more – a masterwork left unperformed at his death. This performance links Hughes’s poetry to images of Ask Your Mama’s people, places, and events, and the works of visual artists Hughes admired or collaborated with over the course of his career. Together the words, sounds and images recreate a magical moment in our cultural history.

APOLLO CHAMBER PLAYERS 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 Christiansen Recital Hall, Hvidsten Hall of Music Tickets: $20 General Admission; $10 Students under 18 The Houston-based Apollo Chamber Players has “found fruitful territory” (Houston Chronicle) through its mission to explore the cultural and folkloric influences in classical music. Apollo presents thematically programmed concerts regionally and nationally including two recent tours of the East Coast. The ensemble’s debut album earned Album of the Week honors by WQXR in New York City. Passionate about arts education, the ensemble curates culturally enriching programs for performance through Young Audiences of Houston, and it has performed concerts and presented master classes for schools and festivals across the country.

SYMPOSIUM

2017 Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium Tuesday, Sept. 19-Wednesday, Sept. 20 The Protestant Reformation was one of the major turning points in Western history and encompassed not only the relationship of faith and reason in religion but also impacted many other dimensions of society including economic, political, social and educational. As we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we will take some time to examine the lessons learned from history while debating how best to reform our current world. We will explore questions such as: • What institutions need reforming today? Our churches? Our colleges? Our political system? • How do we speak truth to power? • How do we act on our conscience? • How do we find the causes that make us want to act? • Why should we want to force change? Join us as we explore the concept that we, as a community and as individuals, are always reforming. The symposium is open to the public. There is no registration and no tickets for this free event.
