Wilier in 2012 Few companies can match Wilier`s long history of creating bicycles. Since 1906 Wilier have been honing their skills & refining geometry so that today they are able to produce some of the finest handling bikes on the road. They also have a proud heritage of success in the ranks of the pro-peloton including wins in the Giro d`Italia, World Championships & the Classics. However, heritage alone counts for little without innovation; throughout their long history, Wilier have always embraced new technology and have never been afraid to try new ideas. In the year 2000, Wilier provided Marco Pantani with one of the first full-carbon monocoque frames, and, in 2003, created a bike with one of the first tapered headtubes.
Last year, this combination of heritage & innovation gave us the Cento 1 SLR, a bike developed specifically for the Lampre Pro Racing Team and a fine example of just what can be achieved with modern carbon fibre technology. However, even this was not enough; the SLR was constrained by UCI minimum weight regulations. Wilier wanted to explore just what was possible with state of the art materials & manufacturing techniques. They also looked at all aspects of the frame design and decided that it was possible to improve the frame even further. One area that Wilier felt could be optimised was the BB and crank system. As none of the systems currently on offer completely fulfilled their design requirements, they collaborated with FSA to develop a completely new crank system. The result of all this work can now be revealed: the Wilier Zero 7 incorporating the FSA 386 Evo Crank. Weighing in at less than 800g, the Zero 7 frameset is the lightest ever frame produced by Wilier. It is a tour-de-force of cutting edge materials, design and manufacturing technology, and, as it is a Wilier bike, sublime road manners and handling are a given. It goes without saying that Wilier are extremely proud of their achievement in creating the Zero 7.

Wilier are extremely proud of their long heritage and there is no substitute for experience, but they will never stop striving to improve their products and will never shy away from taking advantage of new technology.
The Twin Foil is designed around a revolutionary new front fork concept which uses 2 side foils to devert the air around the frame effectively reducing drag. Any TT frame made uses expedients to reduce drag as much as possible. Examples are the pointed nose in the head tube, very narrow head tubes ectetera. This is all good except for the fact none of these expedients can effectively control the air flow once the head tube penetrates the air. Using 1 foil on each side of the fork we are able to effectively direct the air around the frame tubes, therefore eliminating any turbulence.

However, for Wilier, the Zero 7 was not enough; they also decided to give the Lampre Pro Team a state of the art TT bike, the brand new Twinfoil. Featuring a radical new fork, high clearance / low turbulence stays, adjustable rear dropouts and integrated seatpost binder, the Twinfoil is designed to cut through the air with as little drag and as much speed as possible. The new Twinfoil has already been used in anger at the Giro d`Italia and will soon be on course at the Tour de France.

CARBON FIBRE TECHNOLOGY There is so much buzz about carbon fiber. If you are like most cyclists, you want to better understand why it has become the ultimate standard in bicycle materials composition, construction and manufacturing. “Carbon”, of course, can refer to many different things, and the structural properties of carbon fiber can vary depending on the following parameters: - Young’s modulus (also and incorrectly known as the elastic modulus) is the measure of a material’s stiffness under stress. - Tensile strength is the amount of longitudinal stress a material can bear before breaking apart. - Elongation to failure is a measure of how much a material will stretch before failure/breaking. The higher the modulus, the stiffer the carbon, but the lower its tensile strength and elongation to failure (i.e. the more brittle and less elastic it will be). The goal with every frame and fork we develop is to determine, test and implement the best combination of raw carbon fiber materials for a magic balance of characteristics – so that you get the perfect ride. To differentiate between the various types of carbon, the industry refers to them as K1, K3, K6, K12, etc., (with “K” serving as the abbreviation for 1,000) signifying how many thousands of filaments comprise a single carbon fiber/thread/yarn. For example, a K1 carbon fiber is comprised of one thousand filaments, while a K6 fiber is comprised of six thousand filaments. These are the specifications of the raw fibers themselves. Superior manufacturing comes into play when the fibers are joined together by aerospace-grade epoxy resins. The closer the fibers are laid, woven and compacted together, the greater the resulting composite material’s integrity and strength. And the lighter it will be! The number of filaments per fiber, however, does not necessarily have an effect on the quality of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber, the most advanced and best suited to frame construction. We implement UD carbon in the construction of all Wilier Triestina carbon frames. As the name suggests, the fibers in UD carbon fiber are oriented in the same direction.
CARBON FRAME TECHNOLOGY
For our external layers we utilize plain weaves, with fibers oriented at 0° and 90°, as well as at 45° and -45°. It is a demanding process because of the density of the layup, but provides a nice aesthetic. For the Cento1 Superleggera we went a step further, creating a three-dimensional layup we apply as the final layer. Unlike traditional finishing layers, our proprietary Special Weave enhances the tubing’s structural properties, such as lateral and torsional stiffness, as well as impact resistance.

technical glossary What we commonly refer to as “carbon” is actually a composite of fibers and epoxy resin. The resin’s function is to join and bond the fibers, as well as predect the overall structure from external forces. In order to avoid potential points of weakness that could result from micro-gaps in a composite layup, we’ve implemented an ultra low density nanoparticle Zinc Oxide (“ZnO”) resin. This results in a stronger composite with higher resistance to impact while enabling us to reduce the weight of our frames due to its superior structural integrity. What this means out on the road is improved durability and amazingly responsive handling – the hallmark of our frames.
We’ve also leveraged LIT (Large Inflation Tube) technology in the making of the Cento1 Superleggera. Our prepreg carbons benefit from even higher and more uniform compaction through the use of industrial, high pressure bladders. The bladders expand from within the frame’s tubing, pushing against the inner walls of the tubes as the frame mould exerts opposing pressure from the outside. The combined compaction-forces result in a precision, lower-void construction and consistent wall thickness of the tubes throughout the frame’s construction. More traditional carbon manufacturing processes fail to optimally compact a composite, resulting in varied wall thicknesses, or voids (undesirable resin deposits), along a frame’s tubing that compromise structural integrity. That could translate into reduced longevity and strength. So the advantages of the Cento1 SL’s construction are obvious: increased capacity to handle stresses, optimal torsional stiffness, and unparalleled responsiveness.
To build a great monocoque carbon frame, we look for the perfect balance of stiffness, comfort and responsiveness at the lightest possible weight. Carbon fiber is an ideal material for bicycle frames because of its qualities of elasticity, capacity to withstand stresses, and its strength-to-weight ratio. The higher the modulus, the stiffer the composite. On the other end of the spectrum, the lower the modulus, the more elastic it will be. In the construction of the Cento1 Superleggera, we implemented MR60H for stiffness in the critical stress areas where lateral stiffness equates to greater efficiency. Then we used T800H and T700SC, with more elastic characteristics, to ensure comfort and sure-footed handling. Each was used as minimally as possible once our demanding strength and durability standards were met, ensuring the lightest weight frame possible.

TECHNICAL GLOSSARY
Although striking, the Cento1 Superleggera carbon “skin” is not merely aesthetic! Through extensive testing, we established a combination of layup and weave density to reach an ideal critical stress intensity toughness (KIC). The layup configuration of T800H carbon fibers forms a three-dimensional outer weave that increases strength and stability, dampens road vibration and makes the frame more impact-resistant.
Our unique rear triangle concept has been influenced in part by advanced motorcycle design. We have created a seamless, integrated monocoque unit that unifies seat and chainstays, as well as all-carbon dropouts, for more immediate power transfer and superb handling.
Our proprietary oversized bottom bracket design works with standard components while at the same time providing better power transfer, more strength and increased stability where it counts the very most. We have increased the dimensions of the bottom bracket area by 39% over traditional designs without increasing weight.
The seatmast is an integral part of the frame, gradually tapering to oversize dimensions until it comes into contact with the bottom bracket. Countless technical editors have praised this feature for the responsive handling it provides. The interior diameter of the upper portion of the seatmast is 31.6 mm so that it can be cut and used with a traditional seatpost, if necessary.
Seamless construction that does away with joints, glues and bolts. The dropouts are part of the unified rear triangle and an essential component of the carbon monocoque frame mold. As part of the continuous seat and chainstays, the angles of this area of the frame structure have been relaxed to dissipate road vibrations and improve comfort as well as handling.

The oversized, squared profile that characterizes our fork crowns and that flows into the base of our head tubes maximizes strength and stability at a key fulcrum point.
An incredibly strong and resilient carbon fibre. The name of Mitsubishi’s wonder-composite conveys its ability to withstand 46 tons of pressure per cubic millimeter. We implement 46 TON in the construction of our bikes for unequaled strength, stability and durability.
