What is Facilities Management?
The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) describes the facilities management sector as “an organisational function which integrates people, place and process within the built environment with the purpose of improving the quality of life of people and the productivity of the core business”.
The FM industry separates services into two broad categories – hard and soft. Many providers and clients are now favouring total or integrated delivery models that see providers building a true partnership with their client’s business(es).
Hard FM services
Hard services relate to physical items, from a door lock to a whole building.
Examples:
Building maintenance
Access system (security)
Wire testing
CCTV
Fire safety
Air conditioning
etc…
Soft FM services
Soft services are those that involve the management of people to carry out services
Some key services include:
Cleaning
Catering & vending
Grounds maintenance
Waste management
Security services
Concierge/reception
