Since 1976
Bruce Barnes and Howard Sneddon started making outdoor furniture in an old tin shed in Newmarket, Auckland in the 70’s. With Bruce’s design qualifications and Howard’s youthful exuberance they set out to build the “best outdoor furniture money could buy.”
The business has changed dramatically over the years and Devon furniture has been exported all over the world. One thing that hasn’t changed since the 70’s is people continue to buy Devon furniture now, for the same reasons they did all those years ago. ‘Style, comfort, colour and durability.”
Devon fulfill these criteria by using raw materials and methods of construction which are as timeless as the designs themselves.
The old tin shed has long since been demolished, but Devon is satisfied in the knowledge that the furniture they made back then is still out there, surviving everything that mother nature can throw at it.

Teak Teak is a durable tropical hardwood timber, regarded for centuries as the ideal timber for boat building and furniture making where strength and longevity are required. Teak wood will survive for many years outdoors with little or no structural deterioration, thanks to its highly water-resistant quality – it’s even repellant to insects. Devon’s teak furniture is finished by fine sanding and/or brushing. We then buff the surface of the teak to draw out the naturally occurring teak extractives. A coat of Devon Timber Furniture Shield is applied to repel water and dirt and protect .
Teak Care If your furniture is inside, the natural honey colour of the teak will slowly darken, while your outdoor teak furniture will fade to a silver-grey patina. To maintain the natural honey colour of the teak use Devon Furniture Care products.
KWILA Kwila is a strong and durable hardwood found across Southern Asia and the Pacific. Devon was the first manufacturer to recognize Kwila’s potential for outdoor furniture thanks to its stability and resistance to decay and insect attack. Before we turned it into high quality furniture, it was commonly used in wharf construction, house pilings and decking. Over 30 years later Kwila is still a popular timber for the ‘Down-under’ markets of Australia and New Zealand.
Kwila Care Kwila has a rich golden brown hue, with varied grain patterns. The timber colour may vary from ‘blonde to brunette’, but as each table is hand made, we select and match table planks so the varying colours are complimentary. Kwila has a high resin content and the excess resin will bleed out of the timber. This bleeding process can be accelerated by frequent hosing and it’s best to place the furniture on the grass so as not to mark your patio. Any resin marks on concrete will disappear over time. If left untreated Kwila will weather naturally to a silver grey colour. To maintain the colour of your Kwila furniture use Devon Furniture Care products.

Devon Furniture is covered under warranty for any manufacturing defects discovered in materials or workmanship. All fabrics, chair covers (excluding synthetic weave) and umbrella covers are covered under warranty for five years against the loss of colour or strength, under normal usage and exposure conditions. Devon will replace or repair such defects for a period of five years (excluding synthetic weave and umbrella fabric) from the date of purchase provided that the product has not been subject to accident, abnormal use, or lack of reasonable care. Surface coatings are not covered by warranty as they rely on the customers’ maintenance program to ensure their performance. Seasonal cracking that may occur is also not covered by warranty. The warranty does not cover product sold as ‘seconds’, product damaged in transportation or furniture used in commercial, contract, or nonresidential use. 5 year warranty excludes aluminium frame umbrellas which have Olpin fabric, these are covered by a 12 month warranty only.
