ENTER ONLINE NOW AT: This month CORE Life discovers the Mind, Body and Soul, and in doing so we have discovered some amazing stories about life and the challenges it brings. I don’t know if it is because I have been so focused on this issue, or because life itself is done trying to spell out the obvious to me, but the last three weeks have left me wondering. I was watching a program the other night, about a skydiver whose passion is to live on the edge, all of the time. Even after losing the love of his life, and watching her fall to her death, his attitude towards life was nothing short of amazing. When questioned about why he continues to walk a fine line between life and death, it was his answer that had me wondering. He said that the only thing that is assured and guaranteed for us all, is that one day we are going to die, but how many of us truly live? I am living my life, and if I die doing that, then that’s just fine with me. This made me think about my life, and if I am truly living it. In some respects I can say yes. I love what I do and the challenges it brings, but if I had to be honest, I don’t believe I “truly” am. Are you? Enjoy April

TALK ON THE STREET

I wouldn’t smack someone else’s child.

When I was a child my parents gave me a smack on the backside if I was out of line.

Do you believe you have the right to discipline someone else’s child, and why? If the parent is present and the child is doing something they shouldn’t be, or is possibly putting themselves or others in danger of getting hurt, a verbal “please don’t do that” I believe is ok. What are you thoughts on smacking? When I was a child my parents gave me a smack on the backside if I was out of line. My boys get the same discipline and I believe it works. ASHLEY MATTHEWS, OWNER/ SKIPPER, SEA FEVER SPORTSFISHING WHITSUNDAYS

I don’t believe smacking is going to assist a child at all. Children must be accountable for their behaviour and actions.

Do you believe you have the right to discipline someone else’s child, and why?

Do you believe you have the right to discipline someone else’s child, and why?

I think people certainly need to step in to stop someone else’s child’s inappropriate actions, but as for the next step, which would be discipline, I don’t think we really have the right to make that call.

No, I do not have the right to discipline someone else’s child. We don’t teach children to be responsible for their actions or reactions. In a PERFECT WORLD a child would be brought up by parents and extended family and have a strong respect for society and others.

Discipline when necessary should be the sole responsibility of the parent, however this also depends on your relationship with the child. Are you an Aunty, Uncle or Grandparent? In this scenario, there may be an exception to the rule. Kids can take in a lot more than what a person’s intentions can be when disciplining, and I certainly would not like to be the one who leaves a terrible ‘mark’ on that child’s mind. What are you thoughts on smacking? I wouldn’t smack someone else’s child, but as for the parents, it’s completely their choice as to how they raise their children. Smacking a child in public is not my favourite thing to see; I think there are certainly more appropriate times for this. JENNI WEST, ACCOUNT MANAGER, HOT FM EMERALD

What are you thoughts on smacking? I don’t believe smacking is going to assist a child at all. Children must be accountable for their behaviour and actions. Taking out our frustrations on them is not the answer, I believe this is only teaching them about violence and that it’s all right to hit another. Punishment can be formed and measured in many other ways. Getting to the root of their reaction or why they have or haven’t done something also teaches them to be responsible adults and how they will deal with issues in life.

XC COUPE - 2012 STREET MACHINE OF THE YEAR

THIS YELLOW HOT ROD is owned by Ian Gibson of Canberra. This car was the most capped hot rod for 2012 throughout Australia. Although Ian has already qualified for Meguiars Super Stars, he is making the trek to Mackay to show support for car enthusiasts in North Queensland. Adam LeBrese owns this amazing XC COUPE. Adam was awarded Street Machine of the year for 2012. This award is voted by the public and is regarded as the pinnacle within the street machine circle. The XC competed in SEMA in America last year and, since its return, has had another makeover. The Australian built Ford Coupe is now left hand drive with suicide doors and sports some outstanding engineering.

EVENT FEATURES: Qualifying round for Meguiars Superstars / Street machine of the year with over 15 elite show cars / Showcasing cars from Tasmania to Cairns / Undercover venue / Children’s activities and multiple food and beverage outlets / Alcohol free event. Mackay Showgrounds, Saturday 11th from 9am - 5pm and Sunday 12th May from 9am - 3pm. $15 cover charge, $10 pensioners when card is present. THE MOST ELITE SHOW CARS EVER SEEN IN MACKAY! 8 www.corelife.com.au

These are just two of the cars that will adorn the fully enclosed pavilion at the Mackay Showgrounds. At present we will have over 15 cars that have either been in the elite Street Machine top 20 over the last two years or being unveiled on Saturday morning for Meguiars Superstars qualifications which will be held in Sydney, July 19, 20 and 21. Other cars include David Keen’s FJ Tudor, Leisa Chinook’s XF two door Falcon from Tasmania, Adrian Woodley’s 68 Camaro and many more. Gauging previous bi annual shows, the new location in town and the calibre of cars on show, we are expecting more than 12,000 people over the two day event. With an acre of undercover area, the event will cater for all weather conditions and with trade stands including Sh-boomm clothing and Wildsider from Brisbane, Performance and Carbie Centre from Townsville. Coupled with local business stands, the event is shaping up to be a real cracker. It is always hard to follow up each show with new and exciting cars, however we have well and truly exceeded the quantity of high quality cars that will be on show this year. 2011 saw Peter Fitzpatrick bring his FC Holden, (six time Summernauts Grand Champion) to the event which was a great success. Peter enjoyed the event and Mackay so much that he is coming up from Canberra this year, not as a contestant but as the Judge which adds another element to regional car shows.

SERGEANT KELSIE HENDERSON SERGEANT KELSIE HENDERSON HAS A LONG HISTORY WITH PCYC MACKAY, HAVING BEEN INVOLVED AS A VOLUNTEER FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS AND PROVIDING RELIEF MANAGEMENT FOR THE PAST THREE. Kelsie has worked as the Acting Branch Manager for the past 18 months and has recently been promoted to the substantive role of Branch Manager on a permanent basis. With these facts alone, it is obvious her commitment to PCYC is steadfast. “I see my role being to bridge the gap between youth and police interaction by enhancing Queensland communities through engagement. It is by gaining the confidence of the youth through positive engagement and positive interaction that a trusting relationship is built.” Kelsie said. Sgt Kelsie’s vision for the future is to enhance and expand the facilities we have. This will capture a broader range of people, who for various reasons do not know about or have access to our services. Each PCYC is unique and offers a range of community activities tailored to meet the needs of their local community. PCYC Mackay is well known in the community for its out of school and vacation care programs in North Mackay, Marian, Walkerston, West Mackay, and recently Eimeo, centres. What may not be as well-known is the huge variety of community events and programs that are delivered within the centre, such as; Kids’ Playtime, Mums and Bubs Fitness Classes, Aspidown Basketball, Basketball Wheelies, Seniors’ Exercise Classes, Badminton, Archery, Bushaikai Karate and Mixed Martial Arts, there is something for everyone. As the business expands, so too will the programs and activities. PCYC Mackay now offers conference and function facilities for hire. They cater for all your needs, whether it is a business convention, training course, meeting, wedding or fundraising event. Mackay PCYC has four function rooms, with a range of facilities to suit your requirements. “PCYC Mackay provides appropriate, affordable and accessible youth development programs and services to support our local youth. We 10 www.corelife.com.au

give young people a real opportunity to make positive life choices and to develop to the best of their abilities in the community. Our programs, such as Girls With A Purpose, engage youth in a positive and supportive environment, encouraging interaction with police officers and positive role models, and providing a forum for young people to make good decisions about their future,” said Kelsie. A study by the Australian Institute of Criminology observes that sport and physical activity can reduce crime by providing accessible, appropriate activities in a supported social context. All PCYC programs are modelled on the supportive social context on which and are delivered through events such as our monthly Blue Light and Roller Discos and our upcoming ‘Build Up’ Program. PCYC relies solely on the generosity of individuals and businesses to help raise funds for their community programs. Events such as Time4Kids allow them to raise the funds they need in a fun and community-minded way. business I read a brilliant article the other day by John Kotter, a teacher at Harvard Business School. He had been asked to comment on management leadership and he highlighted the mistake people make by thinking that the two words are interchangeable. A great manager is able to plan for a business’s future, they can execute budgets, allocate staff and jobs, measure performance and problem solve. They deliver the business’s products or services consistently on budget, day after day, week after week. They are crucial to a business’s success and without them, business would cease to function. But far too often they are also required to be the business leader, and leadership requires a different set of skills. Leadership needs vision, it means looking for the future opportunities and

finding out how to take the business there. Seeing the opportunities as they present themselves and making the most of them. It’s about seeing change before it’s needed and looking at the big picture. These distinctions need to be recognised so we don’t end up with overmanaged under-led companies that risk our country’s productivity. The notion that a few extraordinary leaders at the top can take a company forward in today’s world is unreasonable, and a recipe for disaster. business

However as advised (in February 2013) by REIQ Managing Director and CEO, Anton Kardash: “The Queensland real estate market maintained its momentum during the last three months of 2012.” The REIQ December quarter medium house price report, showed sales activity was robust for the historically quieter December quarter. Compared to the same quarter in 2011, the preliminary numbers of house sales in Queensland increased by 8% in the December quarter last year. The latest quarterly result demonstrated that the second half of 2012 was one of improvement. This is the second consecutive quarter where the market has exceeded expectations. Historically the December quarter is quieter than the September quarter – and we did have a very strong September quarter last year – but what these figures are showing us is that buyers continue to be more active than the year before. There is no doubt that the Queensland market is improving due to the low interest rate environment, increasing confidence levels, an element of pent-up demand, as well as a more settled economic outlook here and overseas. The Brisbane median house price increased 0.4% to $510,000 over the quarter – the second quarter of positive price growth. The numbers of house sales also increased 8% compared to the same period the year before.” We have been telling our clients by print media and radio for the last six months that the Brisbane market has begun its upswing. The property clock is now at 6:33pm”.

BRISBANE HOUSE PRICES HIT THE BOTTOM AT THE END OF THE JUNE QUARTER 2012 BY DROPPING 1.3% IN THAT QUARTER AND 3.7% IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

WATCH VIDEOS, SEE PHOTOS AND BOOK YOUR SESSION AT FLYBOARDINGMACKAY. COM.AU

IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? NO, IT’S YOU, ON A FLYBOARD. INVENTED IN 2011 BY FRENCHMAN FRANKY ZAPATA, THE FLYBOARD IS A JET PACK ATTACHED TO A JET SKI BY A KEVLAR HOSE. FLIERS CAN GO AS HIGH AS TEN METRES AND DIVE UNDERWATER, USING THEIR FEET TO CONTROL THE BOARD DIRECTION AND THEIR HANDS FOR STABILITY. FOUNDER OF FLYBOARDING MACKAY COREY EGAN TELLS CORE LIFE THAT THE EXTREME SPORT IS EASIER THAN IT LOOKS. Q: How did you discover the Flyboard? A: I found videos of the inventor Franky Zapata on YouTube. It was amazing. It was a must-have for me. I wasn’t big into water sports before, but now I’m all for it. Q: How did you learn to fly it? A: I got my instructor certification at Flyboard X in the Gold Coast, the first place in Australia to get the Flyboard. I also bought my Flyboard equipment there. Q: Where do you ride in Mackay? A: I perform my lessons at Kinchant Dam, which is the best location since it’s fresh water, no stingers and you can always find a safe spot away from other boats. I also do promos at Airlie Beach in front of the lagoon and Dolphin Heads Resort. Q: How to ensure your safety and the safety of other riders? A: When I got my certification, I learned proper safety management. The biggest thing is helping people that are struggling to get up and keeping them out of the way of obstacles. Q: We heard that the Flyboard is valued at over $10 000 AUD. How much does it cost for a session with you? A: 30 minutes sessions are $150 per person and 60 minute sessions are $250 per person. Q: How does a session work? A: We start with a safety brief and then clients strap in. As I drive the jet ski while clients fly, I have control over how high they can fly. Everyone I’ve taught so far has been up in the air in five minutes. 18 www.corelife.com.au

for the boys YOUR POPPER HAS BEEN ENGULFED AND EVERYTHING HAS COME UP TIGHT AND NOW 80LB BRAID LINE IS POURING FROM YOUR REEL. MOMENTS AGO YOU HAD A RELAXED GRIP ON THE ROD AND NOW IT ALL FEELS OUT OF CONTROL AS YOU STRUGGLE TO HOLD ON, THEN IT HAPPENS…THE PRESSURE HAS GONE AND YOU ALMOST FALL ON YOUR BACK. WHAT HAPPENED? DID THE FISH GET TO THE REEF? WAS IT A FAILED KNOT? DID THE LINE JUST PART? OR DID THE HOOKS COME OUT? That unmistakable feeling of emptiness has just come over you, the fish is gone. All the time, effort, planning and let’s not forget costs, have just come to your mind now that the fish is gone.

to prevent a line failure when you hook that once in a lifetime fish. Leaders at the “working end” closest to the fish also need to be in perfect condition, if in doubt-cut off and replace!

This feeling can happen with any style of fishing. The thought of what could have been. Holding up a trophy fish for the camera. Maybe it’s the thought of the “hunter and gatherer” who could have just landed a fish that would feed the family for weeks to come?

KNOTS are the same. I like to re-tie my knots almost daily so you know that you eliminate the possibility of yesterday’s knot that may have got damaged letting you down today. It also makes you super proficient at tying them so you should never have a failure.

These are the things that come to mind if you have a preventable failure when chasing trophy fish and your gear lets you down. Or is it an operator error for not ensuring the gear was in perfect condition? Was that line old and deteriorated? Or was the knot not tied 100%, or maybe that partially rusty hook just wasn’t that sharp after all?

HOOKS these days are getting very expensive but so is boating in general. Is keeping a hook that may be $1 worth risking next time you go out? Ok you can sharpen hooks with a file, and I do this with many hooks on lures etc, but for me when I go bottom fishing it’s a new hook every day. Sharp hooks are paramount and need to penetrate, sometimes through jawbones, to be able to get to the barb to stay connected so they must be super sharp.

These are the issues that arise and any good fisherman knows it’s about stacking the odds in your favour. If line has been used regularly on your reels, you will find it will not last forever. Sometimes just stripping a couple hundred metres off and “top shotting” with some new fresh line is all it takes 20 www.corelife.com.au

REELS also obviously have a huge amount of “responsibility” in the targeting of trophy fish. Drags must be smooth and roller bearings spinning

freely. These are the two most important areas when a good fish is hooked. Handles also need attention to ensure smooth operation. I like to wash my reels in fresh water and detergent after each use then dry down with a rag then a spray in those vital areas with WD40 or similar. RODS also need to be checked. I had a tip runner that had the slightest bit of abrasion once and every time I hooked up my line, it was parting at the tip. I replaced the line thinking it was faulty. It turned out that when the line was under pressure upon hook up it was enough to cut it through when it ran over the abraded rod tip guide. So it always pays to check all your runners to prevent these types of failures. So next time before you head out fishing, take a moment and think, is your gear really ready for that trophy fish? Or could it need some TLC?? Ashley Matthews - Sea Fever Sportfishing Whitsundays

OPAL VAPOUR By Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal in collaboration with Paula van Beek and Ria Soemardjo Against a shimmering terrain of shadow and sand, a contemporary dance, music and light ritual, inspired by ancient Java, awakens mountains, bones and a ghost river. Opal Vapour is a mesmerising new contemporary dance work exploring deep connections between human origins and nature, ceremonial cleansing for purification, rites of passage and embodiment in performance. Moving fluidly between powerful physical states, Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal balances graceful Javanese mystical traditions with adventurous contemporary dance territories. Her sinuous transformation is held by Ria Soemardjo’s pure voice and evocative music score resonating ancient Javanese gamelan. Both artists are transported through time by Paula van Beek’s sublime lighting landscapes and haunting shadow play. ‘Exuding sensuality from every pore – her strong technique a mere vehicle for her expressive power’ Margaret Jolley, Dance Australia Magazine. MAIN EVENT: 19 APRIL

“ THE BYRON SESSIONS” TOUR Pete Murray, one of Australia’s most loved singer-songwriters has revisited the brilliant album Blue Sky on his latest project, “The Byron Sessions”.

Blue Sky Blue “The Byron Sessions” features songs from an album that Pete loves, infused with the flavor and friendships from his adopted hometown of Byron Bay. Musicians who we have all come to love lend their talents to Pete’s songs, creating a mesmerising sound that is familiar yet refreshing. Byron locals Ash Grunwald and Scott Owen (The Living End) lend slide guitar and bass respectively to make Hurricane Coming unmistakable coastal. Katie Noonan’s vocals on Hold It All For Love are beautifully haunting and new kid on the block Fantine takes Pete into uncharted territory on lead track Blue Sky Blue with a rap written by indigenous roots queen Natalie Pa’apa’a (Blue king Brown). Another Byron local Bernard Fanning takes time out of his busy recording schedule to sing backing vocals on Led. Busby Marou contribute vocal harmonies and guitar on Let You Go and the track Free features Darren Middleton (powderfinger) playing his recognisable guitar licks on H.O.L.L.A.N.D. For the first time since his independent artist days, Pete Murray will be touring the country for some up-close-and-personal shows, partly solo and partly stripped back acoustic with some of his muso mates. IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD FLUME ON THE RADIO OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND. WITH HIS TRACK HOLDIN’ ON CURRENTLY HITTING THE AIRWAVES, FLUME IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST YOUNG ARTISTS OUT THERE AT THE MOMENT. CORE LIFE CAUGHT UP WITH THE 21 YEAR OLD ELECTRO MUSIC ARTIST TO TALK ABOUT HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS, TOURS AND WHAT’S COMING UP NEXT!

Q: So you’ve been producing your own music since you were 13 years old – how did you stumble on this great talent for electronic music? A: I’ve always been into music but when I was 13, I came across a production program in a cereal box where you can write an entire track including instruments; it was a very cool experience!.

U C N

K e

W

Q: Your debut album debuted on the ARIA charts at #2 behind One Direction – then moved up to the #1 spot (the 1st electro album to do that since Sneaky Sound System in 2008), how does that feel?

D O

A: Wow I didn’t even know that, so I’m the first electro album since Sneaky Sound System? That’s great!.

T c c e g

Q: You’ve certainly got your own way with music – your single Holdin’ On scored the #4 spot in 2012’s JJJ Hottest 100, along with tracks at #12, #18 and #67 – how does that feel? A: That’s great; I try not to get caught up on the stats. I like to focus on the music! Q: You’re making an appearance at GTM in Townsville in May – are you excited for this festival tour? A: Very excited! I’ve never done these type of shows, so it will be good to see what response I get from the fans. I haven’t done any regional shows, only city shows so it will be something fresh! Q: Are you looking forward to any one act in particular? A: I like The Kooks, so it would be good to see them. Q: Do you have a favourite collaboration that you’ve had so far? A: I have worked with a few different artists on my album but I have recently been working with Chet Faker in a holiday house. He is great to work with and it is a lot of fun making music together. It will be good to continue working with him - we bounce off each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Q: What’s next for you? A: I’m headed to North America and Canada in the next couple of days, then come home for Triple J’s One Night Stand (in Dolby), Groovin The Moo and then back to Europe to write music – it’s pretty full on!

JULY 23 - AUG 22

You could be forced to change your mind about a close and personal friend and this could be very unsettling. Someone in authority who recognises your potential will be doing battle on your behalf. You could be changing address too. Something which has bothered you in the past will now be cleared up. Things that might look mighty big in the distance seem to get smaller as you get nearer to them happening. Anticipating problems could just bring them on so keep smiling and think positive.

AUG 23 - SEPT 23

Big plans about travel could affect you in a surprising way. Many could be meeting the partner of their dreams and have a rollicking good time. Something you have been planning for a while is now coming to fruition. A debt owing will now be paid to you. A newfound romance is quickly cooling down. Don’t let this depress you too much; best to keep a positive attitude.

Do not try and force issues with loved ones. Consider your partner’s feelings. Keep a close watch on your valuables as a loss or theft could occur. If you take life as it comes, you’ll make progress. Don’t mope around but think positive. Your finances should take a turn for the better. However, keep the spending urges under control and do not lend money.

for the girls Hairstylist Kailee Potter shares with us how she transformed Samantha for this month’s makeover.

BEFORE

When Samantha came into the salon it was obvious that she had a beautiful, bubbly personality, so my first thought was to really brighten up her hair and give her a more vibrant style - like her personality! After a full consultation with Samantha, I found out that she is a working mum who works in the food industry, so I still wanted her to have the versatility of a style that was easy to manage but with a modern edge. She also told me that she doesn’t spend too much time on her hair and it was quite curly so I needed to choose a style that she could wear curly as well as straight, if she was to style her hair for a special occasion. I chose to keep Sam’s hair darker, because I felt if we went lighter she would look too washed out. I did a dark panel around her whole hairline and dark feature panels throughout her whole hair so it would still all blend together but make her facial features pop. To add vibrancy and another level to the colour, we did some bright red panels so Samantha’s hair would then match her beautiful, bubbly personality and brighten the whole look. Samantha had said to me that she needed to be able to tie her hair up for work, so taking that into consideration I gave her a look that is concaved and one side cut around her ear for a bit of trendiness and style that would still suit her colour and that she could wear out or up. I freshened Samantha’s look up with our Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics makeup range, still achieving the natural look that Samantha likes and could manage herself and also tinted her eyebrows so they complemented her overall look.

cover story

ROWENA KISSUN HAS A DARK SIDE. SHE WOULDN’T BE OUT OF PLACE ON A CRIME SCENE - HER FASCINATION FOR IDENTIFYING HER PATIENT’S KEY SYMPTOMS BY STARING AT THEIR BLOOD CELLS IS NOT JUST A JOB, IT IS A PASSION.

“I leave no stone unturned,” Rowena told Core Life, “I get excited when I study a patient’s blood and I can see the potential it holds for good health. I get even more excited when I sit with that patient and show them the simple things they need to do to attain their health goals.” The Airlie Beach-based medical scientist, naturopath and herbalist believes the key to optimum health can be found in the hidden details of our blood cells and offers her patients guidance as to how they can feel fantastic with a few minor changes to their lifestyle. Rowena is a country girl, growing up amongst the organic wineries in nearby Mudgee. “I didn’t realise it then, but clearly an organic theme was going to be an influence throughout my whole life! I do love a drop of organic wine, but it is all about finding a balance.”

44 www.corelife.com.au

With a strong medical history in her family, Rowena was destined to take a similar path. She was initially inspired by her grandfather, an entomologist himself and “the most intelligent person I will ever know”. It was her father however who motivated her interest in medicine. When he and the family migrated from Fiji to a small rural town in NSW in the late 70’s to manage pharmacies and medical centres, Rowena saw the amazing diversity this role could include. Anything from the local marriage counsellor to veterinary assistant, “there was never a dull moment!” laughs Rowena. Rowena completed eight years of university in Sydney and then a further two years study in India, where during this time she worked in a clinic which treated patients with sexually transmitted diseases. “Sadly the majority of our patients were young children, 10 or 12, who were either abused or working in the sex trade. We just don’t realise how great Australia is.” It was during her time in India that she also observed the benefits of combining eastern and western medical practices. “I appreciate eastern medicine is sometimes viewed negatively as it still remains relatively unknown to the majority of people in Australia, however a large number of my patients have come to me frustrated that the traditional western methods have not been able to identify or solve their health problems. The results speak for themselves.” When she arrived in the Whitsundays, post working on Daydream Island at the Rejuvenation Spa for a few months initially, Rowena recognised a need for a natural healthcare practice in the Whitsundays and opened her clinic in Airlie Beach two years ago. Since then the business has grown from strength to strength, with highly qualified staff educating clients about the lifelong benefits of naturopathic medicine. “I am not here preaching to my patients or demanding I see them every month for the rest of their life! My philosophy is to help people help themselves by giving them educated guidance and information for the long term. There are a lot of health messages out there, I tell my patients to ignore them all and seek advice from those who are qualified in science and natural health... Google is definitely not qualified!” “There is nothing more that I love than helping someone feel good, whether by eliminating the constant feeling of being tired, or other health issues including fertility, weight loss, mood swings, food allergies, acne... the smallest changes to diet and lifestyle can make all the difference!” Rowena’s drive is not limited to helping others; she is constantly driving her business into new areas. “I like a challenge; I love mountain climbing for that very reason!” Rowena applies this same enthusiasm to her practice, recently expanding to add Whitsunday Medical Tours, where she will personally escort clients to Thailand for elective treatment including dental, ophthalmology and cosmetic surgery. “The travel bug caught me early, and this aspect of my business has allowed me to combine two areas that I love, travel and helping people realise their dreams. Whilst local practitioners may offer negative opinions of an overseas alternative, be aware that there are major benefits that come with choosing surgery overseas. All procedures are conducted by fully qualified practitioners in internationally accredited hospitals with no waiting periods and for a fraction of the price you would pay in Australia. And we do all the hard work, from booking flights and accommodation, to taking you to and from your appointment.” Her next tour for 2013 departs on 24 May, with several tours later throughout the year as well. “If something is concerning you, whether a weight issue, constantly upset stomach or just feeling permanently exhausted, don’t discount it. You know your body better than anyone else, and with some minor testing and diagnosis, you can enjoy some of the greatest changes in your health and, as a result, your lifestyle! You will be surprised!”

ALLURE AESTHETIC REJUVENATION CLINIC A new option to look after our skin As we age, skin imperfections on the face and body begin to appear. This can be in the form of sun damage, pigmentation and broken capillaries. There are a number of different treatments available but we now have the Palomar Emerge Fractional Laser, which is an advanced laser technology that can target the skin imperfections without harming the surrounding tissue. Fractional Laser uses laser micro-beams to target very small areas of skin, leaving normal skin surrounding the region. The body’s natural healing process then rebuilds the treated tissue with new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of youthful looking skin. The Palomar Emerge Laser is a non ablative Fractional laser so there is little or no downtime, which can help treat wrinkles, sun damage, pores, pigmentation and overall texture and quality of the skin. It can even treat new or old stretchmarks with great results. It also means there is minimal discomfort during the procedure. Fractional laser skin resurfacing represents a great advancement in caring for our skin, helping us to look our best without having to undergo painful invasive surgical procedures which then need significant recovery time.

DANIEL POPOVICH OSTEOPATHY & SCENAR CLINIC Are you ‘out of whack’? Pelvic problems can be more that just a pain in the backside. Many of our clients are all too familiar with pain or muscle spasms across the lower back as a symptom of pelvic dysfunction - but unaware that many other seemingly unrelated symptoms may also be caused by this same pelvic problem, which include radiating ‘sciatic’ pain into the buttocks, hip, thigh, calf and even into the foot. To understand the importance of a level pelvis is to understand that the pelvis is vital as the foundation of the spine and also as the ‘cap stone’ of the legs. If the pelvis is ‘out of whack’ – which is often how patients describe they feel both physically and mentally - then so can be any part of the spine causing pain up to the head, neck and shoulders, and may also effect the legs by creating the effect of a ‘short leg’ - causing knee pain, hip pain or foot and ankle pain as the body favours one leg and overworks the other. Other associated symptoms include tender lower abdomen or groin pain, bloating, digestive problems or protruding stomach as the deep muscles in the abdomen attempt to counteract muscle spasm in the back. The gentle elimination of this imbalance may restore balance and function and may eliminate some or all of these symptoms.

LOST THAT LOVING FEELING? PICK UP THE SECRET SAUCE OF LOVING RELATIONSHIPS: A BETTER ME, A BETTER US WRITTEN BY PROSERPINE RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING SPECIALIST MIRELLA DEBONI. IT’S A PRACTICAL GUIDE ON IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS.

“I wrote The Secret Sauce to reach more people who are looking for help in their relationships and for answers to common relationship issues,” she said. Mirella, who runs Whitsunday Professional Counselling and Hypnotherapy, says that the most prevalent concern couples come to her with is communication. The book includes questionnaires about communication, intimacy, anger and jealously along with exercises on how to change those behaviours. “You already know what it feels like to be angry or jealous,” said Mirella. “The Secret Sauce gives you tools to fix it.” While mostly women read Mirella’s work, she’s very conscious of her male audience. “The book gives it to them straight. It’s full of lists and answers. You only have to read the sections that are relevant to you,” she said. “The take - away message of the book is that if you work on what you can change, and your partner works on what they can change, then the relationship will thrive,” said Mirella. “It’s all about what you bring to the relationship and what you can do to change it. You are 100% in control of how you think, feel and act.” The Secret Sauce is a meaningful title for Mirella. As an Italian, her family has a traditional secret sauce that they pass from one generation to another. “The secret to the sauce is the love that goes into making it,” she said. Like a great sauce, a great relationship has many ingredients and takes time to get it right. One of the secrets of The Secret Sauce is finding reasons to fall in love with your partner. “Look for all the positives they bring to the relationship,” said Mirella. The Secret Sauce of Loving Relationships, published by Balboa Press, is available for purchase on Amazon.com and at Mirella’s office in the Whitsundays. The book was showcased in March at acclaimed selfhelped author Louise Hay’s conference in Texas.

COREY WHIBLEY AIRLIE FITNESS

Most of us are aware of the improvements regular exercise can make to our physical health, but what about its positive effects on your mental health? Strength training has been shown to be extremely useful for patients undergoing chemotherapy – giving them a sense of control over their bodies that the cancer and treatment has taken away. This is in addition to the physical benefits like less muscle wastage, improved appetite and increased strength and stamina.

SO, FOR WHATEVER REASON YOU DO IT, JUST KNOW THAT THE MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS OF EXERCISE ARE MANY.

Exercise also has a meditative effect. A recent university study measured stress and anxiety levels in people before and after 30 minutes of exercise compared to 30 minutes of meditation. Exercise was found to be as effective as meditating in instantly reducing stress and anxiety, and actually MORE effective at keeping the stress levels low in the hours that followed! Really, most of us don’t need a study to tell us about the meditative effects of exercise - strength training, swimming, cycling or running involves getting your body into a steady rhythm and focusing internally on breathing and control – sounds like Meditation 101 to me! So, for whatever reason you do it, just know that the mental, physical and social benefits of exercise are many. Exercise really can do it all – mind, body and soul.

Chiropractic has been around in its current form for over 115 years now, so no surprise that most people fully embrace it.

Mackay families are now able to benefit from an Australian first health program aiming for a healthier Australia and it’s free! Launched by the Mackay Mayor, Deirdre Comerford.

The “manipulation” of joints to ease pain has been around since before the earliest healers such as Hypocrates. What many people do not realise however is that chiropractic is one of the most studied and documented health professions, with thousands of positive peer reviewed papers provided to top journals over the decades thanks to the constant harassment by some in the medical fraternity.

MACKAY GP SUPER CLINIC

As a parent, we know that children’s habits are formed by their parents behaviours so we are approaching the family unit together to address health and lifestyle issues. For only a gold coin donation to charity, we provide a family health and risk check and provide ‘prescriptions’ of education and family exercises that can be done as a group together.

As to what we do, well it’s simple really! We help people get well and stay well without drug intervention and the way we do this is through the move well, eat well, think well philosophy.

With parents leading by example, the children will learn and understand from the specifically targeted kids education sessions how their choices in life affect their future in a fun and exciting way.

If your body is not moving as it should due to poor posture, past or present trauma, we try to maximise function. If a joint does not move as it should, then it will cause damage to itself and surrounding structures such as the soft tissue and nerves, and over time this can lead to nerve interference, bone and joint degeneration. This type of degeneration will eventually lead to pain or some sort of symptoms. Remember symptoms are the only way for your body to tell you something is wrong. Covering them up with painkillers can only delay the problem. We fully assess movement patterns, range of motion, posture and take X-rays, CT or MRI if needed. Then with this information we proceed to adjust (mobilise) fixated joints and stabilise hypermobile joints and help the body heal itself!

Education sessions cover the full range of issues that affect quality of life from stress management, achieving target weight, maximising your energy levels, easy dietary tips, goal setting, eliminating negativity and the secrets of exercising for heart health and weight loss. The exercise sessions are based around the “Super Walking Circle”, which allows families with different fitness levels to exercise together and reach their target heart rates to get the benefits of increased energy, weight reduction, reduced heart risk and maximising personal effectiveness. We are looking to make Mackay families fitter, healthier, more vibrant and energetic and happily in control of their lives and future direction!

IN OUR LAST ARTICLE WE SPOKE ABOUT A LOT OF THE MISINFORMATION AND CONCERNS PEOPLE HAVE IN RELATION TO COLON HYDROTHERAPY. SO WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY, LET’S LOOK AT WHY YOU WOULD BE CRAZY NOT TO HAVE COLONICS AS A PART OF YOUR HEALTH REGIME. ‘The build up of fecal material causes the colon to malfunction in many ways, including reducing the peristaltic movements (the waves of contraction) that are necessary for efficient elimination. Build up also changes the pH (acidity/alkalinity) of the colon materials, and causes neighbouring organs, such as the liver, prostate, and spleen to become toxic as well. This waste also increases the toxicity circulating in the blood. As this old toxic material builds up, the colon becomes enlarged and distorted (and in some areas constricted from poor function), disfiguring the torso. We speculate that it may alter the balance of blood flow to other organs. As the colon enlarges, taking up more space in the abdominal cavity, you can appreciate how it may put pressure on other organs, such as the bladder. In addition, in our opinion, the valve between the small intestine and the colon can be compromised by mucus strands, causing back up of toxic material into the small intestine, which is designed to bring nutrients, not toxins, directly into the blood stream. Unfortunately, this is the way that the majority of us are walking around. We have a situation in which an acid toxic environment is throwing the body out of balance. Toxins are entering the blood stream. There

is increased stress on the lymph system, designed to clear the body of toxins. The body is in a heightened state of stress, in general. The toxic effects are far-reaching and may include conditions ranging from colon cancer to autoimmune disease; from low energy to cloudy thinking; from skin conditions to mood disorders; and from urinary frequency to inflamed hemorrhoids. No wonder many complementary specialists believe that disease starts in the colon.’ Luis Rojas and Sally Schutz. Luis Rojas, a certified Colon Hydrotherapist, has been nicknamed the “Colon Whisperer” by his clients because of his extensive knowledge and his caring ability to work with the colon by colon soaking for purposes of detoxification. IT WAS IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE THAT LOCAL TEACHER AND MUM NYRIE CONTOR’S LIFE WAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. THE VIBRANT AND SUCCESSFUL MACKAY WOMAN WAS 28 WEEKS INTO HER PREGNANCY WITH TWINS WHEN THAT FATEFUL DAY STRUCK IN AUGUST 2012.

“I was about to shower after attending our beautiful niece’s wedding when I found the lump during a self examination,” Nyrie told CORE Life. “Oh how I wish I’d found it earlier, but unfortunately for me, it just didn’t actually present until then.” That lump was soon diagnosed as Infiltrating Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, grade 3 Breast Cancer, an extremely fast growing cancer that was being fed by her pregnancy hormones. “The oestrogen and progesterone positive cancer simply ‘took off’ just like a weed.” Contor said the lump was around the size of a five cent piece, but was aggressive enough to force the removal of all of her lymph nodes under that arm. A week later Contor was undergoing surgery to remove the cancer, and the road of anguish was just beginning. The twins Brynn and Asher were delivered at 32 weeks, just three weeks after surgery and with little time for the new mum to recover. “When the twins were three weeks old I started chemotherapy. I was unable to touch Hudson (our 5 year old) and the babies for seven days following each of the six rounds of chemotherapy which were given in 21 day cycles. I guess the toxins from the chemotherapy drugs could compromise the health of my children, and so for these weeks I would wear long sleeves and pants and use gloves (one of my friends brought me some lovely pairs of long evening gloves).” Despite common myths about breast cancer, as few as five percent of all cases are hereditary and as far as Contor knew, there was no immediate link. However recent data suggests one in nine women will develop a form of breast cancer in their lifetime. Contor credits her army of supporters, including her husband Wayde and sister Vhari Kelly, for helping her get through the initial turmoil. A recent fundraiser raised more than $40,000 to help support her with the twin babies while she underwent treatment. Contor is amazingly positive and already looking to how she can use her experience to educate and help other young women who may find themselves in a similar situation. But her journey is far from over, she has six weeks of radiation ahead of her and years of hormone treatment to help reduce of the risk of the cancer returning. But this amazingly positive and inspirational mum of three healthy children has a lot of wonderful times ahead of her too. “I would like to think I will live long enough to meet my children’s children, living with cancer makes you realise how precious each day is.” 58 www.corelife.com.au

The use of acupuncture with IVF treatments is becoming commonplace throughout Western society, with an increasing number of specific clinics devoted to this outcome. 14 different randomised controlled trials over the last few years in Australia all conclude that there is a clinically significant outcome of higher pregnancy rates when acupuncture is used in conjunction with IVF procedures. Treatment protocols have since been put in place for acupuncturists as a result of these trials. Traditional Chinese medicine treatments “offer high hopes for couples everywhere who are seeking to overcome fertility problems” one IVF doctor said. The success of live births using IVF can soar to 87% if Chinese medicine is used for up to five menstrual cycles prior to implantation. After a study released in a British medical journal, one associate professor said,”As a doctor practicing in Australia, what this new study shows is that this effect (acupuncture) is statistically significant and real, and should be incorporated into standard IVF practice.” CHINESE MEDICINE CAN IMPROVE THE SUCCESS RATE OF IVF IN A NUMBER OF WAYS:

MY BOMBSHELL FELL ON SEPTEMBER. 11, 2002 WHILST VISITING A PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE WHO SPECIALISED IN EXOTIC DISEASES. I HAD BEEN ILL FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND I WAS GROWING WEAKER BY THE DAY.

“I have good news and bad news”, he said. “The good news – we know what your problem is. You have contracted a bird flu virus. Its bacteria, pseudomonas areginosa, has invaded both your lungs. The bad news – nothing can be done to help you. You have months to live. Go home, get oxygen, a wheelchair, and get your papers in order.”
His words resonated through the corridors of my mind. I was not prepared. I felt numb, frightened and angry. Modern science had placed man on the moon yet it could not help me? This must be wrong! Prior to that visit, the wide net I had cast for help, both medically and otherwise, had proven futile. This disease was the complete package. It came with lupus, sinus, hepatitis, high blood pressure, bronchiectasis, emphysema, Ross River Fever, Bhama Forest viruses and a blood disease.
My immune system was non-existent. I became a prescription drug junkie. But nothing helped. My search continued. I read self-help books. I had an almighty fight on my hands – I

had to reinvent myself and my thinking. One day I met a brilliant medical masseur who offered help. Within five months all of the diseases, except the blood problem (that took 13 months), had disappeared. I felt fantastic and I was drug-free. I was happy, grateful, but angry. My natural therapist questioned: “Why the anger?” I replied: “It’s fantastic for me. But what about all those who don’t have access to this information and are going to die, like I almost did? Something must be done.” We worked together. Six years later my book titled: “Don’t Follow The Herd” was complete. This book exposes the truth about the sickness industry and the truth about common diseases such as diabetes, cancers, childhood diseases, viruses that don’t stop at the border, etc.
Most times, with correct information and intervention, the body will heal itself given time. The cures are simple but not easy because discipline is the key. Another important factor is correct diagnosis.
