Describe Your Personality In Three Words: Passionate, caring, determined Being busy is something that Scout Fraser has always welcomed, deciding to open her own dress hire business whilst studying her Bachelor of Nursing degree and also being a support worker.

Born and raised a Mackay girl, Scout knows the city inside and out, often attending events which allow her to dress up and hit the town.

But Scout soon realised there was a huge gap in the market for Mackay, one that she could help fix.

“As a size 14-16, I noticed in Mackay there wasn’t many dress hire companies which stocked bigger sizes and I wanted to start a dress hire company which was inclusive of all sizes,” she said.

With an extensive dress wardrobe steadily growing, and an ever-increasing range and style of options, Scout’s services have proven popular with her clientele in Mackay and the wider region.

“I currently stock sizes 6-18 which I have had such a positive response to!” she said.

Describing herself as workaholic, Scout’s dedication is palpable and her enthusiasm is contagious.

“Nursing has always been my passion as my grandma was a hospital-trained nurse. After watching my grandma and then aunty pass away from cancer, it fuelled my passion to help people.”

When she’s not working on bettering her own business or dedicating herself to her nursing studies, Scout is spending time with her boyfriend and their fur baby, a kitten named Sooty.

For Scout, the challenges that she has faced have helped her grow into the strong and capable young woman she is.

“I believe that everything happens for a reason, to help define you as a person.”

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? Serial killers fascinate me

With a hearty laugh and a touch of British charm, Andrew, or as most know him, Andy, is a recent arrival in Mackay, having moved to the sugar city just three months ago. Born in South London, the accent and brilliant banter comes as part of the package.

Weekends find him immersed in his passions: sports, particularly football, and spending quality time with his kids and grandchildren. When it comes to loved ones, Andy's got a bustling family. He's a proud father of two girls and a boy, all in their 20s, and dotes on his two grandchildren. There's also Chumlee, his trusty dog, by his side. He values friendships dearly, with two best friends and a slew of others he's glad to call mates.

He has an interest in American politics while his passion is to try and make people laugh and not take life so seriously.

Andy's career journey has been diverse. He spent three decades in the Financial Futures market, trading for renowned financial institutions like JP Morgan and ANZ. He started working as a barrow boy selling fruits and veggies in Northcote markets. His current role at Gardian involves overseeing the real estate arm of the business, ensuring its seamless operation.

For him, significant life moments range from the heartwarming to the thrilling. The Cowboys winning the championship in 2015 stands out, alongside his unforgettable trip to New York at Christmas. When asked about his biggest challenge, he quips, "My height," with a wink.

As for the wild and weird moments of the '80s, Andy wisely claims selective memory.

With a wide range of skills and trades under his belt, it is no wonder that Brett was able to rise through the ranks to his current position of Fixed Operations Manager at Whitsunday Auto Group.

A career in the automotive industry was not always on the horizon for Brett who left school in Redcliffe in South East Queensland, to start out as an army apprentice in the Australian Defence Force. While the work was tough, Brett thrived with the challenge, sparking a passion for mechanical work and the industry.

Fate, however, moved him in a different direction and he began working in the IT sector before returning back into the automotive industry where he worked on all sorts of equipment including cars, trucks, and boats.

Taking some time out over the years, Brett has now been consistently involved in the automotive Industry for the last 20 years now, finding vehicle dealerships are the best workplace for his skill set and offer a place where he can thrive within this dynamic and demanding sector.

At Whitsunday Auto Group, Brett has flourished with the responsibility of Fixed Operations Manager, managing both the service and parts departments of the dealership, as well as overseeing facilities, business development and specialist recruitment.

In his down time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Sonya, and his close family and friends, and of course Ellie, the family’s golden lab.

Brett says his most significant life moment was meeting Sonya and being a father to his two children.

When time allows, Brett also spends time riding his motorbikes, and sailing, and tinkering away on various projects to enjoy some well-deserved downtime.

A GOOD MATE AND YOUR PROSTATE

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, but despite its prevalence, it is not a subject many people choose to talk about, especially around the dinner table. This means that many men are living undiagnosed with uncomfortable symptoms that could potentially become life threatening. The mystery surrounding treatment and the exaggerated concerns about invasive medical procedures often mean men live in fear of presenting at the doctors. Fortunately, here in the region, there are two dedicated support groups, one in Mackay and one in the Whitsundays, that bring those affected by prostate cancer together. The groups offer men the opportunity to sit in a safe environment, talk openly about their experiences, share stories, swap tips, and offer helpful advice to make each journey more comfortable. John Ryan started the Cannonvale group a few years ago when he was first diagnosed with prostate cancer and could not find any other local support group. Held on the third Wednesday of each month, the group usually consists of about seven men and their partners.

Determined to help those who have been recently diagnosed, John says this can be a confusing and overwhelming time, one that can be helped with the support of others going through a similar experience. Operating under the umbrella of the Prostate Cancer Foundation in Canberra and

sponsored by the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach, John kindly imparts his knowledge and can offer a variety of brochures, connections, and helpful ideas.

When John was diagnosed in 2018, he was given two options - to have his prostate removed or undergo radiation. Presented with the advantages and disadvantages of both, he elected for removal and, for the past three years, has lived a relatively normal life. Unfortunately, prostate cancer has a roughly 30% reoccurrence rate and John was re-diagnosed earlier this year. He is currently going through two months of radiation in Townsville, and after a period of recovery, life will be back on track. Fellow Whitsunday local PJ Tell, who is also going through prostate cancer, only met John recently when he attended one of the monthly support group meetings, and a strong camaraderie between the two men instantly formed. PJ was diagnosed four years ago, but doctors advised a watch and wait treatment protocol. After years of careful monitoring, his PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) count has risen high enough to warrant removal of the prostate and he is now on the waiting list for this procedure.

Prostate cancer is slow growing in most cases and 100% of men survive the first five years, 90% living for the five years after that, and many recovering completely. If caught early and constantly monitored, prostate cancer can be managed, and

life expectancy is very high.

PJ first started noticing symptoms when he began urinating too frequently, a single car ride down to Mackay would see him stop several times. A visit to the doctor and a quick blood test revealed a high PSA count and prostate cancer was later confirmed following a scan.

Many men are known to avoid going to the doctors because of the fear of having to endure a ‘finger up the bum’, but the initial test is simply a blood test. If you are worried about your health, make sure your doctor includes PSA count in your blood test and prostate cancer can be flagged straight away.

Both John and PJ say that unfortunately there are a lot of myths, inaccuracies, and exaggerations surrounding detection and treatment of prostate cancer, and these are regularly discussed at support group meetings. Big topics include sexual function and urinary incontinence, which can be largely minimised with a good surgeon. Lesser-known issues of debilitating fatigue in the immediate aftermath of the operation and tips for ‘special underwear’ are also normalised by sharing stories at the support group.

If you are over the age of 50, or under this age but having symptoms, please contact your doctor or simply go to your local support group and ask a few questions.

Picture this: an ambitious young woman, a bunch of wild dreams, and a sprinkle of entrepreneurial magic. Meet Rebecca Douthwaite, the powerhouse behind Core Publishing. Core Life is a name that has been beating at the heart of the Mackay and Whitsundays’ communities for more than a decade, and with this very magazine, marks its 100th edition.

Bec’s remarkable journey as the owner of Core Publishing has been a saga of triumphs, from forming a men’s magazine to the zenith of mainstream media through community newspapers. The crowning jewel of this journey is the 100th edition of Core Life magazine, a testament to her determination and unwavering passion.

From the outset, Bec’s trajectory has been a story of success. At a tender age of 21, she embarked on her maiden venture, crafting City Life Magazine—a lifestyle publication that swiftly expanded from Cairns to Townsville and the Whitsundays. In a decisive move, she sold City Life to APN Australian Regional Newspaper. Amid this transition, a new chapter commenced—her son Kaylem arrived, infusing her journey with a profound purpose.

As Kaylem grew, so did her aspirations. The launch of Core Life Magazine was a transformative moment, serendipitously aligning with the closure of APN’s City Life—a shift that paved the way for Core Life’s ascendancy. And here we are in 2023, marking the 100th edition.

Not content with resting on laurels, she embarked on launching Tripping Magazine—an ode to her dedication to the Whitsundays where she resides, to bring a tourism and travel publication direct to visitors by strategically positioning it in hotels, airports and other experience providers. However, it was the birth of Mackay and Whitsunday Life Newspaper that truly exemplified her vision. When News Corp halted printing a host of regional newspapers, including in Mackay and the Whitsundays, Bec rallied to return the community’s voice to print.

It was an assertion that media is more than ink and paper; it’s a lifeline connecting communities.

While the journey to 100 editions of Core Life was marked by unparalleled dedication, it was punctuated by financial ebbs and flows, unrelenting late nights, and all-nighters to meet print deadlines. Then came the unforeseen challenge—the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst uncertainty, Bec’s passion found new expression. Instead of faltering, Core Life Magazine launched an online platform to unite the community during trying times. Without missing a beat, they swiftly transitioned back to print, reaffirming their commitment to their readers.

Bec’s thankfulness shines through as she reflects, “It comes down to two things, people and passion.

“The people who’ve been a part of Core Life Magazine’s journey, pouring their dedication and heart into every edition, really show their passion for what they do. My editors in particular, Rachael and Amanda, have both been with me for around a decade each.

“I’ve been fortunate to have had a mix of talented and dedicated people as part of the team over the years.

“Just as importantly, our clients have been there right from the start, backing us up with their own excitement for their businesses. Some have been with us for more than 10 years, never missing an edition. They are the true champions, without their belief in what we do, we wouldn’t be able to deliver our free news platforms to the region.

“And you know what? The communities we serve trust us to tell their stories in a real and authentic way. Having the privilege to share their stories is the real blessing.

“It’s all about people and their passions that make Core Life Magazine what it is. Without that, we’d just be going through the motions.”

As the 100th edition comes to life, it’s like capturing the heart and soul of our community—a place where stories, dreams, and progress live. It embodies the magazine’s strength, not letting challenges quiet its voice.

And the journey is far from ending. While Core Life marks 12 years in the region, Tripping still going strong after 8 years and Mackay and Whitsunday Life surpassing three years in the news realm, a new publication is about to be born. Burdekin Life, a weekly newspaper based in Ayr and Home Hill, will make its debut in a matter of weeks at the end of September. Along with the creation of a new regional newspaper, Core Life Magazine will also be distributed throughout the Burdekin, further strengthening the media ties across the greater region. The magazine is already distributed in Townsville and Magnetic Island.

Like Mackay and Whitsunday Life, Bec felt compelled to answer the call of a community who were crying out for a publication they could feel was their own. A free, weekly community-style publication in print and online, sharing the stories that matter to them.

As the pages of Core Life continue to unfold, we can only anticipate the vibrant stories yet to be shared. With its 100th edition, Core stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the dedication of a business owner to empower the impact of community spirit.

THE WINNING

RACHAEL SMITH

Position: Editor

Time with Core: 8.5 Years

Favourite Moment: I love it when the team gets to enjoy the perks of the job - tickets to events that we all enjoy, glamorous photos shoots where we can be silly, travel experiences to amazing places – it’s all incredible!

Most Embarrassing Moment: When I realised I’d dropped my son off at school with my skirt split at the back and showing my undies. I only discovered the tear when I had nearly reached the car and felt round the back to straighten my skirt but there was nothing there!

REBECCA DOUTHWAITE

Position: Publisher

Time with Core: Since Inception

Favourite Moment: Reaching this

100th issue! Such an amazing milestone for a publication that has stood the test of time, despite the economic ups and downs for more than a decade.

Most Embarrassing Moment: Tripping on the stairs, whilst delivering magazines to a client and falling into their glass sliding doors, and their entire team watched.

AMANDA WRIGHT

Position: Editor Time with Core: 10 Years

Favourite Moment: The nicest interview I’ve ever had was a lively chat with singer Daryl Braithwaite. Surprisingly, our dialogue drifted from melodies to the Whitsundays’ best kept secrets; he was more than keen

Most Embarrassing Moment: A highlight has to be my less-thangraceful banana boat rodeo at Daydream Island, when I sailed into the water. When I couldn’t get back on the inflatable, I had to be towed halfway to shore to swim to the rest of the way. Bec was convinced I’d become shark bait.

BRONTE HODGE

Position: Cadet Journalist

Time with Core: 5 Months

Favourite Moment: I love the ‘team bonding’ moments, like testing out Viper with Crissy and Rach, or the photoshoot, stuff like that. The feeling that this is a community, a little family is something that I like.

Most Embarrassing Moment:

I remember not knowing anything about the area and having to have conversations with big wigs in the area and talk off the cuff about things.

CRISSY BOTTRELL

Position: Production and

Administration Manager

Time with Core: 3 Years

Favourite Moment: The Women in Business photoshoot in 2021 was one of my most memorable moments. It’s a surreal feeling having a face full of make-up and a fancy hairdo, then answering the phones like there’s not a major photoshoot going on in the background.

It was a day of make-up, hairspray, funny poses, and lots of laughs. The first of many fun days I’ve had here.

Most Embarrassing Moment: There have been so many. It’s hard to pick just one.

SAM GILLESPIE

Position: Journalist

Time with Core: 1.5 Years

Favourite Moment: Winning an award for a feature I wrote about homelessness was a highlight, but the favourite moments come when sourcing, researching, and writing those pieces, hearing, and sharing the stories of those who are just looking to be heard.

Most Embarrassing Moment: Every time I confidently attempt to remember someone’s name and get it horribly wrong.

MARC EVANS TARNATE

Position: Graphic Designer

Time with Core: 6 Years

Favourite Moment: Getting the opportunity to be creative with Core Magazine.

Most Embarrassing Moment: When me and Bec’s son went on a jetski tour and got lost on the water, because I didn’t have my glasses! Bec’s son would have been 10 years old, and he drove the jetski back to the dock!

JESSICA CLARK

Position: Sales Account Manager

Time with Core: I worked for Core 8 years ago, then left and came back 2 years ago.

Favourite Moment: Would definitely be our staff trips to the Islands, and watching Amanda come off the banana boat ride!

Most Embarrassing Moment: I was

distributing Core Life Magazines in Emerald and I didn’t see these two small steps leading into the store. I managed to trip and fall into the entrance, but when I tried to get up, I tripped on all the magazines I dropped. The owner of the store had a giggle.

TAYLOR TREWARTHA

Position: Graphic Designer

Time with Core: 1.5 Years

Favourite Moment: Our 2022 Christmas party! We had a ball out on the water, and the most spectacular view over Airlie Beach from the afterparty. The hors d’oeuvres and games were the topping on the cake.

Most Embarrassing Moment: It’s hard to think of a stand out moment, but working for a newspaper has revealed how little I know about sports. Who would have known Rugby Union

and Rugby League are very different sports!

MIKE MCCANN

Position: Sales Account Manager

Time with Core: 2.5 Years

Favourite Moment: The chaos that ensued following the infamous Steve and Jenny ad, speaking on Sunrise and The Today Show and subsequently picking up Marketing Campaign of the Year at the QCPA Awards.

Most Embarrassing Moment: Turning into Captain Cook after a few beers on Hayman Island and making a beeline for Langford Island aboard a mini catamaran, with the Hayman staff sending out a rescue party after me.

ANDREW WILLCOX WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

For someone who spends his time between his hometown of Bowen, his workplace of Canberra, and every other corner of the Dawson electorate, Andrew Willcox is one prolific political leader. With the amount of time the Member for Dawson spends immersed in his community, you’d be forgiven for thinking he has a clone. But Andrew assures us that there is indeed only one of him and, over a year into his role in federal politics, he’s proud of what he’s learnt and achieved. A loyal supporter of local business and industry, including this very publication, he continues to share his political journey with Core Life, and sat down to share his reflections for our very special 100th edition cover story.

Andrew is no stranger to life in the community. From stacking chips at the Bowen tennis club to serving on the Whitsunday Regional Council, he is always looking for the next opportunity to create change. A passionate representative of his people, Andrew understands what the region of Dawson deserves and works tirelessly to get it. Climbing the ranks from councillor to mayor, where he served for six years, the opportunity for him to do more arose when he ran for federal politics.

“There were a lot of things I wanted to do and probably one of the biggest difficulties with council is there’s never enough money to go around,” Andrew said. “To have access to a bigger bucket to bring home to the community, that opportunity was too good to pass up and I was fortunate enough that people backed me, and I thank them for that. We are achieving things through opposition, and I’ve been working hard every day since.”

It’s been just over a year since Andrew was sworn in, and he’s proud of the significant strides he’s made during his first term so far, particularly in securing vital funding to support the region. Most recently, funding was secured for upgrades to Volunteer

Marine Rescue (VMR) Whitsundays, a promise that became a pillar of his election campaign.

“I’m very happy that we ended up being able to get the money for VMR Whitsundays,” Andrew said. “That was something I pledged during the election campaign, and I was proud to be able to do that from opposition. While we have our debates, I also spend time going to see the government and constantly pitching our case for the seat of Dawson.”

After a year dotted with highlights, Andrew’s proudest achievement has been his adaptation to federal politics and having his wife Raylene by his side every step of the way. He says while he’s still new to the role, he’s embraced the challenge and learnt at every possible opportunity. When he goes to Canberra, he represents his people and arms himself with the most accurate information to make the right decisions for his constituents. Andrew Willcox has proven that he’s a man of his word and strives to get his community, its people and its industries what it deserves.

If you could invite any historical figure to a dinner party, who would they be, and why?

“I’d like to have dinner with John Howard. I just felt he was one of the best political leaders this country’s ever seen. When I was younger under his leadership, I always felt like we were in a safe pair of hands, and I’d like to spend some time with him.”

What would your dream automobile / vehicle be if you could own anything?

“It’d have to be a Ferrari, a red one.” How does Andrew Willcox unwind at the end of a busy week?

“My favourite thing to do at the end of the week is, if there’s a Cowboys game on, I just love sitting down, having a beer, cooking a steak and watching the mighty Cowboys – that’s my ideal Friday night.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

THE PERFECT PROGRESSION

WITH KALEIGH AND ASH ROWE FROM PRECISE CORPORATION

Watching their family and their business grow and mature through the pages of Core Life Magazine, Mackay powercouple, Ashleigh and Kaleigh Rowe have celebrated milestones, welcomed innovations, survived downturns, and showcased their achievements through the power of storytelling. As the articles have evolved over the years, so too has their respected local business, Precise Corporation, transforming from humble beginnings as an automotive mechanic to now servicing entire vehicle fleets for the ever-expanding mining industry.

Celebrating 20 years in business in 2020, the company’s longevity is a testament to its versatility, quality of service and diversity. During the various ups and downs of the mining industry, Precise has proven they can continue to deliver, and it is this level of trust in their services that has seen them survive, year after year. From fleet servicing to complete mine vehicle fit outs, Precise Corporation are leaders in this area and now specialise in mine compliancing and brake testing for most equipment on most sites. They are at the forefront of all aspects of mine site inspections and can service and repair both private and lease vehicles for both small and large fleets with approvals with most vehicle lease companies.

With over 40 brand new vehicles booked in for complete mine site fit outs and compliance over the next couple of months, Precise has become

a leader in the industry, with several new mining companies asking and granting them compliancing approvals, some of which are exclusive. This confidence has fuelled Precise in this area.

“Ash often comes up with solutions and offers consultancy for our clients when we do come across compliancing issues. As opposed to simply failing an inspection and moving onto the next customer. We prefer to and have the ability more often than not to assist in the rectification of defects allowing customers to safely get their equipment to work quicker,” said Kaleigh.

Priding themselves on their industry knowledge, adaptability and can-do attitude means that Precises’ reputation is far-reaching and respected. And while they are high achievers professionally, Kaleigh and Ashleigh are also high achievers personally, with four beautiful children adding to the richness of life.

After, 23 years in business, the couple are now dreaming of greener pastures and while they remain at their peak professionally, overseeing most aspects of the business, they are also looking to diversify into other business avenues. Having purchased a 70-acre property on the outskirts of Mackay, the family have been busy establishing hundreds of trees and palms with the intention of turning the property into a special event venue. With an air strip under construction and plenty of space for camping, they hope the location will oneday become a truly unique destination.

If you could invite any historical figure to a dinner party, who would they be, and why?

Probably Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie, the man who created US steel, to better understand what drove them to become such titans of industry. But more importantly, Nicola Tesla to try to understand some of his pure genius.

What would your dream automobile / vehicle be if you could own anything?

We just purchased a V8 6-seat RAM to tow our new caravan. We chose a caravan a bit smaller than our last one and it’s like a transformer, expanding out and popping up, as we want to go more off road, fishing, and crabbing that sort of thing. The kids love calling it a transformer!

We love the caravan parks for the kids especially with waterparks but wanted a bit more freedom to go off grid in more remote harder to get to places. What is a book you’ve read, movie or documentary you’ve watched or podcast you’ve listened to that left a lasting impression and why?

I like watching my reality tv as it helps me unwind from our wonderfully busy life, but Ash loves his podcasts and older books about the law of attraction. He loves anything to do with being happy and healthy. precise.com.au

HEALTH, HEART AND HOLISTIC HEALING

For the past 16 years, Rowena Kissun has been at the heart of local health, leading the way as an Integrative Practitioner and carving out a reputation for helping people take control of their health through natural medicine and science-backed advice. With innovation at the core of her business, Kissun Clinics has introduced many ground-breaking practices over the years – from Intravenous Vitamin Therapy, to Genetic Testing and Functional Pathology assisting those with questions around autoimmunity, gut health, fibromyalgia, viral illnesses and issues relating to chemical and heavy metal toxicity.

A trusted and knowledgeable voice within the health community, Rowena has reinvented what it means to be a naturopath, redefining her services by regularly working alongside local GPs, oncologists, chiropractors, and other allied health professionals. By providing this inclusive, holistic advice she ensures each of her patients receive the best targeted health solutions to maximise their quality of life.

“Liaising with our client’s specialists, GP’s and other members of the care team creates a holistic approach which is needed. We are all experts in different areas. Dropping the ego and putting the patient first is most important,” said Rowena.

“16 years ago, I never thought there would be so much integration between a clinic like mine which focuses on natural health and other practitioners who practise western conventional medicine. It is really exciting because people deserve to receive the benefits from both sides of medicine.”

Originally from the small country town of Rylstone in New South Wales, Rowena studied at University in both Australia and abroad, then embarked on a working holiday to the Whitsundays. When she arrived, she was surprised to discover there were very limited natural health options in the community, so she decided to start her own venture.

Fondly remembering the first year, before she could employ a receptionist, Rowena would run the phones, make the bookings, and deliver consults while placing a note on the front desk telling

walk-ins she’d be back soon.

From humble beginnings, Kissun Clinics grew substantially in a short amount of time as the community heard about Rowena’s abilities. Within four years, it had taken over three adjacent commercial spaces and the business was operating with several staff and a variety of other allied health professionals on-site. More recently, Kissun Clinics has expanded

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

WITH TIM PERKINS, WHITPRO GROUP BARING ALL FOR BUSINESS

Known for his readiness to have a laugh and willingness to bare-all for his business, Tim Perkins is an upfront, real and honest person whose naked prowess is matched only by his business acumen. Always ready to strip down and get real for fun and lively photoshoots with Core Life Magazine, Tim shows that having a laugh is a big part of business life and a unique marketing tool that definitely grabs your attention. Over the years, Tim has appeared naked with a chainsaw and also convinced his male staff members to do the same for a subsequent shoot. This year, to celebrate 100 issues of Core Life Magazine, he has done it again to showcase over 100 new pots that have just arrived and are currently in stock.

A respected operator Tim is also a man who mucks in with his crew, drives the deadlines and oversees each project. A dynamic force within his business and well regarded in the industry, it’s hard to believe Tim started a landscape and garden maintenance company with just two staff and two vehicles. Over the past 18 years, this has grown to an incredible 38 staff and 59 vehicles. With long hours, dedication and a passion for every aspect of the business, Tim has, alongside his business partner and wife Norina, grown Whitpro into the powerhouse it is today.

It was 2005 when Whitpro began its life as a contracted delivery business, employing couriers to deliver parcels around the community. Within a few years Whitsunday Professional Delivery Services, as it was known then, was shortened to Whitpro, making it versatile and easy to adapt to other business models. For several years after this, the garden maintenance side of the business ticked along while both Tim and Norina worked in other roles to supplement their incomes.

“As soon as we had the confidence that the business could bring in enough to pay myself a wage, I knew I could work on it full time, it had

me secure employment,” said Tim. This was back in 2013, and with Tim dedicated to the full-time running of Whitpro’s landscape and garden maintenance department, growth was steady. It was three years later in 2016 that Norina closed Iconic Bride Photography and also dedicated her full attention to Whitpro and its growth. Just a few months later, Cyclone Debbie tore through the region, causing untold damage to property and the community and Whitpro found its services in high demand. Working tirelessly around the clock to help the community recover, Tim and Norina along with their dedicated team, had one of the toughest and busiest time of their working career. In the year following, together they took on new staff and diversified to include water deliveries, irrigation supplies, a small café and additional trucks and earth moving equipment.

Fully established, constantly busy and able to give staff secure employment, Tim and Norina soon moved their focus to purchasing a property to facilitate the next stage of their expansion. The couple’s focus now on creating a garden centre, a relaxed on-site café, and a community space where people could come together for events or to simply enjoy nature.

In 2019, the dynamic duo purchased an ambitious project that was in desperate need of beautification, moving the Whitpro headquarters to 124 Paluma Road. The site was previously owned by a hoarder who had accumulated more than 200 truck loads of rubbish, and it took the couple almost six months to clear the yard, expose the beautiful Queenslander central house and signature fig tree which is the centrepiece to the garden grounds. For the past three years, they have been operating a demanding business which covers a multitude of facets from Australia Post deliveries, garden maintenance, bulk landscape yard, water

ECLIPSE FINANCIAL

Two Decades Of Financial Advice

For the last 20 years Eclipse Financial Planning have been inextricably linked to the ebbs and flows of the Whitsunday community, guiding their clients through the challenging times, celebrating their successes and always remaining at the pulse of predictions. The dedicated team are experts in helping their clients carve stable financial futures, but more than that, they are community focused individuals that pride themselves on connection and a high standard of service.

Owner, Justin Butler believes these values are at the heart of the business’ success and his community

focused ethics are deeply entrenched in every aspect of what he does, both at work and in his free time. For the past two decades, Eclipse Financial Planning has included annual face to face reviews as part of their service. This protocol eventually became law a few year ago, but has been part of their practice since inception.

“One of the reasons we set up Eclipse was because the banks and a lot of financial advisers at the time were charging ongoing fees and not really providing an ongoing service,” explains Justin.

“If you’re being charged an annual fee, we believe you deserve more than that, so we’ve always prided ourselves on completing ongoing annual reviews with every client, every year for the past 20 years.”

Justin, his wife, Susan and two accountants, started Eclipse in 2003. Having worked for Westpac Bank, the team predicted very early on that banks would soon separate from financial planning, a prediction that came true four years ago. Getting a head start on crafting their own, customer focused firm, the business has been there for their clients and survived many challenges along the way.

34 | www.corelife.com.au

PLANNING

Challenges 2007-2008

This period was significant for two reasons. Firstly, it marked the moment that Justin and Susan bought out the two accountants and officially became the sole business owners. Secondly, it was the period when the Global Financial Crisis hit, just a few months after the couple bought out the other owners.

“At that time, if you were in a big city, you might have just closed the doors and re-opened a few

years later. But being in a small community, in a small town and being invested with our clients, we stuck it out,” said Justin.

“We felt a responsibility to steward as many of our customers as possible through the GFC to a successful outcome, some didn’t have a successful outcome, but we knew continual communitication was the right thing to do.”

COVID 2020

The year that will be forever remembered for the pandemic, where the world came to a halt and the business landscape changed forever. Fortunately, for Eclipse, this period of time offered the breathing space the business needed to reflect and recalibrate. location and opening a brand new office space in Cannonvale later this year.

Growth 2012–2018

Weathering the storm paid off, and Eclipse was soon back in calm waters and ready to expand its reach. This period of time represented growth and consolidation for the business and in 2012 two satellite offices were opened in Bowen and Proserpine allowing Eclipse to service their clients right across the Whitsundays. Then, in 2018, the first Eclipse Office

was opened in the Gold Coast, following a conversation with a longterm friend and fellow adviser, Greg Morianos, who expressed a desire to expand the Eclipse brand and services. Over the years, the new office has slowly gained traction and become a stable business in its own right, planting the seeds for new opportunities in the future.

Celebrating 20 Years 2023

With fresh views in sight and 20 successful years behind them, Eclipse is embarking on an exciting new era by moving location and opening a brand new office space on the corner of Carlo Industrial Estate in Cannonvale later this year.

Expansion 2024 and beyond

Like many business owners, after 20 years in a fast-paced and demanding sector, Justin is now looking forward to slowing down and working ‘on’ the business instead of ‘in’ the business. With his two trusted Financial Advisers, Steve Obst and Jake Flaherty working from the Cannonvale branch, and Greg down in the Gold Coast, Justin has strong foundations from which he can now grow his business further.

With his three children in their teenage years, potentially moving south for university or employment in the future, Justin plans to open opportunities for the firm and extended family time down in the Brisbane area. While he will still live in the Whitsundays, oversee all advisers and remain working closely with small business and complex matters, Justin is relishing the extra time to focus on this new and exciting expansion.

STEERING THE SHIP

With Owner and Business Financial Adviser, Justin Butler

Overseeing the integrity and direction of the business for the past 20 years, Justin has kept his foot on the pedal, constantly changing gears as global climates shift and local landscapes change. With over 30 years of financial planning behind him, Justin is now taking a more consultative role in the business, where his experience and depth of knowledge are drawn upon to help whenever needed.

This new structure means he can focus on complex issues without getting bogged down in the detail and can also work on the future expansion of the business. Determined to leave a legacy behind, both in the world of financial planning and within the local

region, Justin is a deeply valued community champion who has spent the last seven years as the driving force behind the redevelopment of the Whitsunday Sportspark Complex.

A passion project for Justin, the Sportspark has taken many hours, but time he has gladly given in the hope of propelling the future of sports and community forwards in the Whitsundays. The complex also has a personal connection for Justin and his 17-year-old son whose soccer, touch, and rugby teams he has enjoyed coaching or managing over the past few years. Justin also has two daughters who he looks forward to spending more time with as his hands-on workload gradually decreases.

DISCOVER A BETTER WAY

With Eclipse’s Financial Adviser Jake Flaherty

Determined to give clients the level of service he wished he’d received when first seeking a financial adviser’s help, Jake offers a tailor-made approach, ensuring hopes, dreams and ambitions are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

“Managing finances can be quite a confusing area for a lot of people,” explains Jake.

“Often, they come into money very quickly through something like inheritance or they’ve finally got their super pension, and working out how to best use it can be quite confronting. It’s definitely not one size fits all. Some people are coming into

retirement and want to sit in the shade and read books, others want to travel the world!”

Working closely with each client, Jake can establish what is most important to them.

“When you tell them that they will have 20 years of comfortable retirement and see the relief on their faces, it’s very rewarding.”

A father of three boys, Jake is as busy in his home life as he is at work, but that’s the way he likes it. With a passion for both sport and the community, he spends a lot of his free time managing the local junior and senior soccer teams.

“We have a really lovely client base, which makes my job easy!” said Steve.

“I find working with our retired clients really satisfying because I can help them negotiate fairly complex Superannuation and pension issues. Getting positive outcomes is very rewarding

and I love that every week is different.”

Justin and Steve have been both colleagues and friends for over 30 years and when Steve decided to change location, he was thrilled when a position at Eclipse became available. Despite always dreaming about become a police officer, and unfortunately failing the medical, Steve says that helping people with their finances is a fulfilling job and one he takes great pride in.

Over $105k raised for charity!

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the 2023 Mayor’s Annual Charity Ball raised an incredible $105,828.58, making it the largest amount ever raised since the first WRC Mayor’s Ball was held in 2015. A special presentation was held on Thursday 24th August where we presented $52,914.29 each to my chosen charities RACQ CQ Rescue and Whitsunday Housing Company Limited.

I am elated to have raised such a huge amount and the generosity from sponsors and the community in our region is nothing less than remarkable.

The decision to support these charities was simple, because ultimately, Council, RACQ CQ Rescue and Whitsunday Housing Company Limited all want the same thing. That is, to serve the needs of our communities. As a Council, we are focused on doing the best by everyone living, working or visiting the Whitsundays which includes keeping everyone safe.

I am extremely grateful for the support of our Platinum Sponsors Hillery Group, PDM, Bishopp Outdoor Advertising and Top Shelf International, our many Gold and Silver Sponsors and a big thank you to those who donated prizes or services.

THE DYNAMIC DUO

RYAN

JACOBSON AND MATT CAMILLERI OF VEX ENGINEERING

From school and soccer mates to subcontracting sidekicks and business partners, Ryan Jacobson and Matt Camilleri share a wealth of engineering knowledge and experience. When the boys met over 17 years ago, they had no idea they’d go on to join forces and create one of the region’s most exciting mechanical and structural support solutions providers. Vex Engineering has been operating for just over 12 months and has already established a reputation for high quality work, attention to detail and personable customer service. The team at Vex are young and enthusiastic, driven by two directors who foster young talent and nourish those valuable skills.

Ryan and Matt went their separate ways after school to complete their apprenticeships, Ryan as a boilermaker mostly in construction and Matt as a fitter in hydraulics. Upon both entering the mining industry, they each decided to establish their own businesses and would often cross paths on the jobsite. Realising that they each offered unique skills and qualities, they combined forces, filling each other’s gaps and creating a one stop shop clients can depend on for projects big and small. “We were always working alongside each other at different jobs and eventually we just merged together,” said Matt. “I was more the mechanical side and Ryan looked after a lot of fabrication and structural.”

“It was pretty cool when we both started subcontracting to see someone else your own age that you knew from school doing the same thing, having a crack, and we helped each other where we could and it developed from there,” added Ryan.

Vex Engineering have formed a young, talented and tightknit team, working onsite to repair equipment including electric shovels, draglines, wash plants, heavy mobile equipment, pumps, LV departments, drills, infrastructure and excavators.

A major milestone for Vex was executing a major 21-day shutdown on a 4100 XPC Shovel, with 95 people being inducted to site in 3 and a half weeks. The shutdown was executed exceptionally well, safely, on time and under budget, and is one of the many operational achievements of the business so far. The team is also equipped with the knowledge and tools to complete jobs in other sectors like agriculture, ports and construction. The offsite facility in Paget supports the onsite teams with fabrication, overhauls, planning and innovative design for multiple

projects.

The company brings youth and enthusiasm to the industry, with a talented and trustworthy team driven by two young directors who aren’t afraid to get out on the job site themselves. Ryan and Matt have created a hardworking yet friendly and familyoriented culture in the business. They understand the work-life balance and provide employees with the flexibility required, creating a workplace where people want to go to work, and it’s earnt Vex Engineering a finalist position for the 2023 Resource Industry Network Champion Culture Award.

Both family men, Ryan and Matt appreciate the “best of both worlds” that Mackay provides. Matt, who is Mackay born and bred, enjoys spending family time with his wife Bree and their two sons Ryland and Kai. Ryan was born in Tasmania, moving to Mackay with his family at the age of ten, and has three sons with his partner Kyra of a similar age to Matt’s, De-yontrae, Sail and Banx. The coastal lifestyle keeps them busy with fishing, boating and beaching on weekends. The social atmosphere of Vex Engineering also often extends past the working week, Ryan and Matt priding themselves on it being a place that people want to work.

DELIVERING THE WESTHILL DIFFERENCE

When a chance meeting in a quaint coffee shop turned into an exciting business venture, how were Dom and Lauren Dennis meant to turn it down? It was back in 2021 that the couple sat down with the previous owner of Westhill Engineering in a Mackay coffee shop to open discussions about leasing his business. But by the end of the conversation, it became clear that their passion, drive and ability enticed the owner to sell instead. Two years on and the couple have not once looked back to that exciting moment that marked the beginning of their venture.

Having always dreamt of being their own bosses and business owners, Dom and Lauren, knew it was something they could do well and relished the opportunity to dictate their own hours and to control their own success.

“It was something we’ve always wanted to do, but the timing was never right. But then, just by a fluke, when I met the owner of Westhill, he was willing to sell.” explained Dom.

The past few years since purchasing the business have gone by like a blur and during the time, Lauren and Dom have overseen a whirlwind of success, expansion and growth. They changed the name from Westhill Engineering to Westhill Services so they could broaden their range of services and diversify the business’ reach. They now deliver expert fabrication, onsite repair, maintenance, and

much more.

While focused on delivery and production, Westhill Services has also carved out a solid reputation for providing qualified and excellent long- and short-term labour and personnel. No matter the industry, be it in diesel fitters, boilermakers or auto electricians, Westhill Services has the connections and the capacity for quick backfill labour.

Specialising in more unique projects and equipment maintenance, Westhill Services delivers where competitors cannot.

“We tackle jobs that people don’t want to do because they’re too big. That’s our point of difference,” said Dom.

With his background as a fitter, Dom oversees the entire operation of Westhill from the workshop to field services. Meanwhile, Lauren is overseeing the books, accounts, and HR. Together they manage a strong crew, comprising of industry tradesmen and quality labourers.

As evidence of the business’ rapid expansion,

Dom and Lauren have increased the workforce drastically since they took over. What started with only small crews onsite and in town has now expanded, more than tripling the amount of employees since 2021.

Initially, the expansion was nerve-wracking for the couple, but they soon learned to take challenges in their stride.

“This has always been the dream, to run something this big,” Dom explained.

“Initially, it was a struggle. It was the balance of managing cash flow with growth, at first, but in the last few months, we’ve really seen the product of our hard work,” added Lauren.

“The growth came naturally once we were able to balance everything out. We just continued to do what we do, and do it well, and our clients are happy with our product.”

When not in the workshop, Dom and Lauren spend time with their three children, ferrying them around to weekend sport or training, as well as spending quality family time together. When the busyness of life and the business does slow down, Dom likes to spend his time with one of his car projects and Lauren in her other love of Midwifery.

To link commercial property owners with their ideal buyers or lessees, while guiding investors and tenants towards the ideal commercial spaces to meet their needs.

With a history steeped in media, management, politics and community service, Chris has solidified his presence in Mackay’s business landscape. He joined the Gardian Commercial Real Estate team in February 2021, leveraging his extensive network and local understanding to facilitate successful outcomes.

What sets Chris apart is his profound connection with the local business community, cultivated over many years, including a four-year term with the Mackay Regional Council. Backed by a strong work ethic and an impressive track record, he’s known for delivering results.

“The Gardian family works together to achieve results and have an authentic team environment,” Chris notes, highlighting the agency’s collaborative spirit and commitment to success.

Amidst a tapestry of diverse encounters, one particular memory shines brightly for Chris. In the back streets of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, an unexpected meeting unfolded with Tony Currenti, the former AC/DC drummer. Seeking ties to his Sicilian heritage, Chris found a connection in Tony, the sole English speaker available at the time, who was able to help him with local history relating to his grandfather.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Chris is deeply involved in his community. His passion for helping others extends to various roles, including his involvement with Rotary, Crime Stoppers, Mackay Italian Street Party, and Pine Islet Lighthouse Preservation Society.

Reflecting on his life journey, Chris acknowledges a pivotal moment—a motorbike accident in Mackay years ago that ultimately led him to his wife, Lynnis. This twist of fate paved the way for a loving family, including five grown children and two cherished grandchildren.

PEN TO PROPERTY DAVID FISHER

With a career journey that smoothly transitioned from wielding words as a journalist to unlocking opportunities as a seasoned Sales Consultant at Gardian Real Estate, David Fisher brings a unique blend of communication finesse and real estate acumen. With more than seven years in the industry, his narrative shifted from storytelling to story-creating, all while prioritising the trust and satisfaction of his clients.

“Having worked as a journalist in Melbourne, Hong Kong, and a political reporter in Sydney, I then came to Mackay as the editor of the Daily Mercury,” David recounts. After four years at the Mercury, he was ready for a new challenge but wanted to stay in Mackay, which is when he entered the realm of real estate.

Trust forms the cornerstone of David’s approach.

“It is important that my clients, people whose properties I am selling, know that my marketing, write-ups, negotiation skills, communication and hard work will produce the best possible price for their property,” he said.

Beyond the real estate hustle, David finds his joy in running, gym sessions, and passionately

following AFL footy. His cherished family moments with his wife, Sonia, and two children bring balance to his busy life. His daughter, Bianca, is in her second year of a law degree in Brisbane and son, Lincoln, is in year 11 and enjoys playing AFL and soccer.

A unique life experience shaped David’s outlook early on.

“When I was a younger bloke, I lived in Madrid for six months and studied Spanish and then travelled for a year in Latin America by myself.

“It was an adventure and helped me understand that I could overcome problems and deal with life’s challenges by staying calm, thinking things through, staying positive and backing myself.”

These traits have become pillars of his professional journey.

LEAGUE MEETS LISTINGS BADEN ROBINSON

In a field where real estate and rugby league connections converge, Baden Robinson stands as a pivotal player within the Gardian team. Kicking goals on both fronts, he adeptly navigates the role of Sales Associate/Buyers Agent, orchestrating deals and creating winning strategies for clients.

Baden works with Kelsey Webb and Bryan Loft in a multifaceted role, assisting in the administrative aspects of sales and close collaboration with buyers to secure their dream properties.

With a tenure of two years in the industry, Baden’s entry in 2021 was prompted by a close connection with Gardian Director, Ben Kerrisk, through rugby league. Seizing the opportunity, he embraced the world of real estate which has provided a professional platform allowing him to also play rugby league for the Mackay Cutters Hastings Deering Colts.

His dedication to absorbing knowledge from diverse sources allows him to deliver a personal and exceptional experience to each client.

“Being in the industry for a brief time, I’m keen

TEEING UP SUCCESS JOE RICKMAN

From fairways to front doors, Joe Rickman is no stranger to strategic play.

As a Sales Agent at Gardian, he approaches the purchase of every dream home with the same precision and patience instilled in him from his former career. You see, Joe’s journey wasn’t always paved with “For Sale” signs; he spent a decade as a professional golfer before trading his clubs for contracts.

“I am a qualified golf professional, and this was my profession for approximately 10 years before real estate,” he shares, a testament to his versatility and drive to excel in diverse domains.

For Joe, Gardian Real Estate isn’t just an agency; it’s a continuation of a family legacy.

“My father, Eric Rickman, was a founding director of Gardian Real Estate when it opened its doors in 2013,” Joe said.

And just like mastering the perfect drive, Joe believes the real estate journey should be stress-free for his clients.

“I’m here to do my best for them by making this important part of their life as successful and stress-free as possible. I’m systems-driven, thorough and proactive to achieve the best

His wife Erin and two children, Parker and Lexi, form the heart of his journey. “The simple things matter most, getting a hug and a kiss from them, in particular if it has been a hard day at work, or seeing their smile after picking them up from school or daycare.”

PURSUIT OF PROPERTY MARK KELLY

Within the ever-evolving realm of real estate, Mark Kelly, a seasoned Commercial Property Agent at Gardian Real Estate, stands as a testament to experience and insight. With a career spanning over two decades, Mark’s journey from residential property to commercial real estate showcases his flexibility in the field.

Originally focused on residential sales in Central Queensland, Mark’s fascination with figures and calculations led him to specialise in commercial properties and development projects in 2001.

“I found accounting very interesting, which led to strong interests in the commercial property sector,” Mark recalls.

Having joined Gardian 7 months ago, Mark quickly established himself as a key asset. His proficiency in defining property needs for businesses, both large and small, has facilitated practical matches for investment owners. He credits recent successful transactions to Gardian’s high service levels backed by brand promotion and complementary services.

Reflecting on cherished life experiences, Mark shares, “Among the many memorable moments in my life, marrying my true soulmate Allison in

2019 stands out as the most remarkable. Life has been truly fantastic since meeting her.”

Recounting further adventures, he adds, “Years earlier, while riding a motorbike around Phuket, I was unexpectedly invited into a Buddhist temple by monks. They draped a prayer robe over me, and we engaged in hours of conversation at two remarkable temples.

“Another fond memory was witnessing my wife master the art of surfing in Hawaii. I still remember her triumphant moment of standing up on the board.”

Between them Mark and Allison have five grown children in their 30’s and five lively granddaughters, aged between 13 and 4. The children span across different cities - with the eldest based in Mackay and the rest spread between Sydney, Brisbane, and Rockhampton.

“The granddaughters are full of energy, their amusing remarks and mischievous escapades never fail to fill our lives with laughter.”

Personal and professional milestones intertwine for Mason. “A memorable moment in my life would be buying my first home in 2019 with my partner Chloe,” he recalls, highlighting a pivotal achievement that marked a new chapter in his life.

As they anticipate the arrival of their second child on Valentine’s Day 2024, Mason’s story continues to write new chapters, both within the real estate arena and his cherished family circle.

Venturing into the world of electric vehicles with charged enthusiasm, the path of Scott Hession and Casey Tiller led to the emergence of Volt Car Rentals. Captivated by the potential that electric vehicles offered, they founded the business in 2019, kickstarting their venture with electric vehicle trials. Fast forward to 2022, they hit the accelerator and acquired their first fleet of rental EVs, sparking a new era of clean and exhilarating travel based in Mackay.

Vehicles have always been a passion for Scott and Casey, having purchased locally renowned Torrisi’s Garage in 2016. With his automotive mechanical background and history with rental vehicles, Scott was more than ready for the new business venture.

“We were always keeping up with the latest in technology and had been monitoring the electric vehicle releases for years before starting the process. As longer range and better tech vehicles started hitting the market that are suitable for our area, we knew it was time to start getting our car rentals up and running,” explained Scott.

The success of Volt Car Rentals has been a

welcome reward for Scott, who continues to oversee operations with Torrisi’s Garage as well.

With a budding fleet of three electric cars, including the brands Tesla and Volvo, and one hybrid vehicle, Scott has also included two petrol SUVs into the fleet as an alternative option.

“Being an owner operator is one of the hardest jobs I have ever done across my working career, but it is also rewarding in many ways,” Scott said.

“You put your heart and soul into everything you do for your business. It is not always as easy as people think it is, there is a lot to balance on a daily basis and there is always something that suffers as a result. The daily achievements and smiles on faces make it all worth it.”

Having shared 11 years as a couple with seven of those as business partners, Scott and Casey stand united in every facet of life. Accompanying them is Chloe, their loyal eight-year-old rescue Bull Arab cross, completing the circle of their bond.

When they’re not steering the business, Scott and Casey rev up their lives with travel escapades,

shared adventures, and treasured moments spent alongside friends and family.

Something Scott wished he knew before he started in business:

“That work life balance would be one of the hardest things to ever concur, you either have time or money, it is very rare that you ever have both.”

A piece of advice Scott would give to someone starting in business:

“Be ready for a long hard commitment to your work. It doesn’t stop when you leave work for the day, it will consume a lot of your time and you have to be ready for the long commitment of being self-employed. You don’t have to please everybody. Do what you do well and work on the rest as time goes on. Make sure you have a good accountant and financial planner and talk to them before any venture. Know the commitment is worth it. Look for the daily positives in any situation rather than concentrating on the negatives.”

HAVE YOU BEEN TRAINED BY BULL?

WITH CLAYTON (BULL) PEARSON FROM PITBULL TRAINING

Apassion for heavy machinery began at an early age for Clayton, who remembers sitting on the guard of a dozer with his dad when he was just six years old. Growing up on a farm, he was driving tractors as a youngster and always had a fascination with how vehicles operated. This skill and experience is now something he brings with him into his new business, Pitbull Training, upskilling and training mine workers on how to drive a range of vehicles, from electric shovels to dozers, diggers and graders.

Opening the doors to the business just six months ago, Clayton is a critical and proficiency trainer and assessor. Experiencing an already strong demand for his services, he is beginning to expand his team. Within a few months he hopes to employ more trainers and infuse their skills and high standards with his own to create exceptional work ethics and excellent results.

Prior to opening the business, he had seen a few issues with the level of training available, and it was these observations that sparked an interest in helping the industry improve the quality of training given to the workforce.

“I’d seen a lot of problems with operators getting trained, a lot of green operators training each other, and a lot of bad habits had been created,” said Clayton.

“Instead of seeing the problem and doing nothing about it, I thought maybe I could be part of the solution, close that gap and offer quality training through safe operation.”

With their knowledgeable, safety-focused delivery, Pitbull Training can get your team up to a high standard so you can relax, rest-assured they will have the right tickets and licences, and the ability to use them proficiently.

Originally from Moranbah, but moving around a lot as a kid, Clayton left home at 15 and has worked across many different trades, from

stockman to timber cutter, slaughterman to earth moving in western Queensland. Remote work, however, soon took its toll and he dreamt of a life closer to civilisation. This pathway opened up for him when he received a fortuitous phone call from a prestigious mining company, offering him a job.

Accepting the position, he began working in Rehab, turning spoil into habitat, shaping, seeding, and planting old mine sites to replenish the land. He has progressed steadily within the mining industry for the past 20 years, from operator to supervisor, mastery and training. He also ticked off a bucket list item, driving roadtrains. The inevitable next step for Clayton, was to branch out on his own and actively help in an industry he loved. And so, Pitbull Training was born.

“We are a local family run business in Moranbah,” said Clayton.

“We have a lot of experience that we want to put back into the workforce and are really enjoying helping out.”

A family man, Clayton has a beautiful wife of 21 years and two children, 16-year-old Madyson and a 13-year-old son, Soren. His wife also pursued a manual career and is a train driving supervisor. When they get time off together to spend with the children, they can often be found watching their daughter captain the local Rugby League team or they love heading out into nature, fishing, camping, or bow hunting.

Affectionately known as Bull by most of his friends, Clayton feels like his business is an extension of himself, a true calling to help educate and better train future generations, raising standards and ensuring safety for all.

Mackay is a hub for industrial innovation, and it’s businesses like iQ Solutions who, through streamlining processes and promoting efficiency, are keeping the industry moving forward. By providing a sustainable welder qualification system created by and exclusive to iQ Solutions, Managing Director Paul McNeill aims to eliminate double handling, time wasting and exorbitant costs, saving local businesses time and money when inducting new workers.

“We’re doing things a lot differently than any other company in Mackay or Australia for that matter,” Paul said. Welder qualifications are regarded as one of the more expensive and time-consuming qualifications for a business to maintain. Unlike first aid, working at heights and working in confined space qualifications, welder qualifications are traditionally held by a business. If a boilermaker was to do their welder qualification with one company, and then leave to start at another company, they’d have to complete another welder qualification, delaying their start onsite and costing the company in the delay in works and the requalification.

Paul has developed a new system unique to iQ Solutions where qualifications are managed by iQ Solutions via their nationally recognised qualification register, freeing up companies from additional and unnecessary quality assurance labour, ensuring their boilermakers qualifications stay valid for the full three years and allowing a streamlined onboarding process for new workers. iQ Solutions’ system also allows them to ensure their prices are affordable for their clients and is often half, if not far less than their competitors.

“Boilermakers move around a lot, and repetitive retesting is extremely time consuming and costly. We’ve improved the process so companies can contact us when onboarding, and we can identify if a boilermaker is already qualified. This allows the worker to go straight onto a paid job and not have to waste money requalifying to something they already have. This ensures that their company’s obligations are maintained, optimising their position commercially, and safeguarding their company in the unlikely scenario of an incident.”

Over the last two years, iQ Solutions has established itself as a qualification specialist, servicing mining, construction, agriculture and marine sectors. iQ Solutions are building a prosperous and resilient resource the industry can rely on to maintain their welding requirements, create increased employment opportunities and reduce the wastage of resources and materials. Specialising in welder qualifications, the business also offers welder procedures and specialised labour hire including welding inspectors, supervisors and coatings inspectors.

IQ Solutions have recently had the fortunate opportunity to onboard and team up with Stewart Hughes, who is one of the region’s leading welding machine, processes and filler metals experts. Stew has been involved internationally with

106 | www.corelife.com.au

PAUL MCNEILL AND STEWART HUGHES OF IQ SOLUTIONS

teams developing both welding consumables and machines to help improve the characteristics and efficiencies of a weld. This will significantly benefit iQ Solutions with what they can offer their clients, and also increase their client’s success.

With over 40 years of experience, Paul and Stew draw on their industry knowledge and understand what it takes to keep the industry advancing. Their keen eye for quality and detail drives their passion for progression and their knowledge of industry standards allows them to maintain the highest standards.

“You’ve got to know what issues there are,” Paul said. “If there is somewhere we can improve what the industry needs then we will make it happen. I want to ensure we support the industry and make the qualification sector sustainable. If we support the industry, then the industry will recognise that and support us as well.”

iQ Solutions have proven their capabilities time and time again, most notably through collaborating with construction company McConnell Dowell on a major shiploader and berth replacement at Hay Point Coal Terminal. The internationally renowned project included the disassembly and replacement of one of the existing shiploaders and berths to improve materials handling and cyclonic wave immunity, iQ Solutions were up to the task and eager to work with likeminded professionals.

“McConnell Dowell have been so innovative with the way they do things, and it was fantastic to come onto a project where they’re progressing the industry,” Paul said. “That’s exactly what we want to do. We want to make things simpler, easier, cheaper and better for people rather than them having to waste money and time every single time they need to do something happens.”

Located to Tennyson Street in Mackay, iQ Solutions have been busy developing a purpose-built, world-class facility to enhance their services to the industry. They also offer workshop inspections, and assistance with equipment set up to ensure their clients works are running efficiently and productively. iQ Solutions continue to grow and diversify their depth of services, truly establishing themselves as a one stop shop.

Paul has built a team and a reputation backed by his knowledge of the region and the sector. Despite growing up in an army family and living in many different parts of the world, he returned to Mackay in 1994, and his family originates from Mackay and has strong roots in the region. It’s this close relationship he has with the region and its industries that drives Paul to innovate. He aims to support an ever-expanding industrial hub, evolve with it, and sustain it through progressive, efficient and market-leading ideas. He’s aiming to restructure the industry, and he’s inviting you to come along.

BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY M&P SERVICES

From its early days as a modest auto venture to its present stature as a pioneering force in transportable building manufacturing, M&P Services has navigated the currents of change with unwavering determination. Today, the focus is squarely on creating innovative transportable structures that meet diverse needs.

In an exciting step forward for the business, M&P Services is venturing into uncharted territory, collaborating on the creation of fully off-grid cabins—an advancement that promises to address Australia’s housing challenges while embodying their commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.

But where did it all begin?

In the year 1986, when Mackay was a bustling sugar town and coal was starting to boom, a mechanic named Peter Brayshaw (dec) and a skilled panel beater, Max Lamb (Snr), came together with a vision. Thus, M&P Autos was born, its initials standing for Mechanical and Panel Beating—a fitting match for both the business and its founders. Their inaugural shed stood proudly on Archibald Street.

Just two years later, in 1988, M&P Towing emerged, establishing a stronghold in transportation. With the mining boom of the early ‘90s, they ascended as the preferred transporters for prominent Mackay businesses serving the thriving mining industry. As the town evolved, so did M&P. Adapting at a moment’s notice, they transitioned into becoming one of the region’s largest transport and logistics companies.

Max Lamb’s son, Max Lamb (Jr), entered the picture in 1990, solidifying his role as a Director by 1997. However, it wasn’t handed to Max Jr easily. He got on the tools as a mechanical apprentice straight out of school, his father determined to ensure his son had an appreciation for all aspects of the business from the ground up.

In 2005, the company ventured into manufacturing transportable buildings—a significant risk that paid off remarkably.

Max Jr explains, “We lost a big revenue stream as we could no longer transport and install for what became our competitors. That was a huge risk and change of direction for the business.”

This decision was pivotal, positioning them as Central and North Queensland’s largest manufacturer of portable buildings.

A seismic shift took place in 2021, when the transport side of M&P’s business was sold. The focus pivoted towards their signature product: transportable buildings. The transition wasn’t without challenges, yet Max Jr reflects, “Fast-forward two years later and it was the best decision the business could have made.”

From their signature mobile cribs to a growing line of static buildings, M&P’s client base diversified, partly due to the ripple effects of COVID.

Max Jr said, “Four years ago, our business was perhaps 90 per cent servicing the mining

108 | www.corelife.com.au

COMMUNITY SWING BY SWING

industry, whereas now it’s 50/50.

“With COVID more people were choosing to holiday closer to home, so the caravan parks up and down the coast used the opportunity to refresh or increase the amount of cabins they have to offer travellers,” Max said.

“The cattle industry has been strong so providing rural living quarters has also been a big market for us.”

Max Lamb Jr’s journey is intrinsically tied to M&P’s growth. Joining as an apprentice fresh out of school in 1990, he honed his skills under his father’s mentorship. By 1997, he became a Director, driving the company’s foray into manufacturing. Max Jr’s pride lies in witnessing the evolution, from panel beating to transport to manufacturing, and realising his father’s vision.

Max Lamb Snr may have retired three years ago, but he still keeps a finger on the pulse of the progression, and he has (and always will) have an office at M&P. Both Max’s children are eyeing off positions via the school-based VET pathways program at M&P, which will see them enter the workforce later this year and next.

Amid the busyness of business, Max Jr cherishes family moments. He juggles his roles as a business leader and father, making time for his children, Max and Emersen.

Teeing off in 2016, M&P Services drove into action with a remarkable event—the Annual M&P Services Charity Golf Day.

At first, it was all about rallying the community during a tough time caused by the mining downturn. Max Jr, a big golf fan, saw a chance to mix some friendly competition with a dose of good deeds.

“We wanted to have fun and support the local community at the same time,” Max shared.

As years rolled by, the event grew bigger and better, reaching more people and helping more causes. It’s no small feat that the golf day has raised a whopping $150,000, making a real difference for our local charities.

Even when the going got tough during the COVID period, M&P Services stuck to their promise of supporting the community, lifting everyone’s spirits along the way. The 2022 event was the biggest to date, raising an incredible $45,500. The eighth edition took place on September 1, as this publication was readying itself for print. You can visit M&P Services – Quality Transportable Buildings on Facebook for an update on this year’s success.

Max Jr’s journey is a testament to the enduring success of M&P Services. From humble beginnings on Archibald Street, they’ve emerged as pioneers in the realm of transportable buildings, embracing risks, and challenges to create spaces that cater to diverse industries, from mining to tourism.

The Lamb family legacy continues to shape M&P’s future, one built on the foundations of resilience, innovation, and a commitment to delivering excellence.

THE KEY TO TAILORED ENGINEERING &

In the world of industrial engineering, challenges are abundant, and solutions must be as unique as the problems they address. Key Solutions Group (KSG), located in Mackay’s Paget industrial estate, stands as a testament to the power of adaptability, innovation, and a resolute commitment to offering tailor-made engineering solutions.

From its humble origins as a one-man operation, KSG has evolved into a regional leader, forging an enduring impact across diverse industries. The bedrock of their success lies in their “bring us a problem, and we’ll find a solution” philosophy, solidifying their reputation as the go-to partner for tackling the most complex engineering predicaments.

A TURN-KEY APPROACH TO ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

At the core of Key Solutions Group’s identity is their turn-key approach to engineering challenges.

From mining to civil construction, their comprehensive service encompasses the entire spectrum of project development.

Frank Attard, owner and founder of Key Solutions Group said the business was founded on being able to unlock the potential of projects by providing end-to-end engineering solutions. This approach

means clients can entrust their challenges entirely to KSG, knowing that no gap will be left in delivering a complete, innovative solution.

Frank said, “Being those people who say, ‘bring us a problem and we’ll find a solution’ means we get a lot of the hard jobs, not too many easy ones, but that’s shaped who we are as a business.

“Our clientele generally have the more challenging engineering jobs that need doing.

“With our engineering experience, fully equipped workshops with experienced tradespeople and a large field division, we can take care of the total problem so the project gets done safely and efficiently.”

This emphasis on tackling complex challenges head-on has been instrumental in shaping KSG’s identity.

MASTERING UNDERGROUND EQUIPMENT, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, AND FIELD SERVICES

KSG’s expertise in fabrication and repairs extends to underground equipment and washplant spaces. With tight repair windows during shutdowns, their precision-driven approach ensures effective solutions.

“Rapid response repairs are our specialty,” notes

Frank.

“It’s about ensuring a good plan is in place to complete the job within the tight window.”

As new mine areas emerge with two under construction, KSG’s role in meeting industry demands becomes even more pivotal.

From longwall equipment overhauls to stacker reclaimer repairs, KSG’s Field Service capabilities span diverse scenarios. The team’s skill set extends beyond repairs to encompass steelwork erection and material processing plant enhancements, showcasing their versatility in tackling multifaceted challenges.

“A unique challenge we had recently was jacking a stacker conveyor that was leaning over,” Frank said. “We had to complete ground testing and engineering to ensure the process would work, then mobilise to site with special equipment and specialists from the USA to oversee the process.

“The job went off without a hitch and the client went back to work as planned.”

KSG also provides project management and labour staff, from Project Engineers to Trades Personnel and Management Teams. Their track record of providing project-based experts highlights their

TAILORED TRADE SOLUTIONS

commitment to comprehensive solutions.

DESIGNING THE FUTURE, SOLVING THE UNSOLVABLE

One of KSG’s standout strengths lies in their conceptual design prowess. The ability to transform an idea into a practical reality is a testament to their innovative spirit.

“We can develop a design from scratch or fix/ modify existing equipment or a process issue,” explains Frank.

This bespoke design approach allows them to provide the key to unlocking even the most complex problems.

The recent integration of a 3D printer into their operations has further elevated their design capabilities, facilitating rapid prototyping and efficient validation of designs.

Frank said, “We use the 3D printer to print parts that are normally not in production, concept phase, or have an extended lead time from an overseas supplier.

“We can quickly get a design off the drawing board and into reality to make sure it fits with trials, speeding up the overall process.”

EMPOWERING THROUGH PEOPLE

A company’s true strength is reflected in its people. With a diverse team of over a hundred professionals, including seasoned veterans and aspiring apprentices, KSG thrives on a culture of continuous improvement.

“We’re only ever as good as our last project,” Frank acknowledges.

This principle demonstrates the company’s strong dedication to supporting its employees’ growth and consistently discovering avenues for enhancing their abilities.

A team that embodies the spirit of innovation and problem-solving is central to KSG’s identity.

Frank added, “When we have a good team, like a good football team, you’re always looking to improve no matter what skillset comes along.”

This unyielding commitment to excellence, paired with a diverse range of skills, ensures that KSG is well-equipped to handle the most intricate challenges across industries.

PIONEERING THE FUTURE: ADVANCEMENTS IN ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

As part of their unwavering commitment to innovation, KSG is on the cusp of unveiling a groundbreaking SMART Manufacturing

These advancements will not only elevate their capabilities but will also pave the way for new frontiers in engineering design, fabrication, and project management. This new facility is slated to open by the end of the year and is poised to redefine the industry’s standards for engineering excellence.

This strategic investment reaffirms KSG’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and setting new benchmarks in engineering innovation.

In a world where engineering challenges are diverse and complex, Key Solutions Group emerges as a leader of innovation, adaptability, and unparalleled problem-solving. With an exceptional ability to provide turn-key solutions that span industries and a commitment to empowering their people, KSG continues to shape the landscape of engineering solutions.

“We unlock the potential of projects by providing end-to-end engineering solutions.”

With each project, KSG solidifies their reputation in industry, reshaping the future of engineering excellence one tailor-made solution at a time.

A GOOD JOB GUARANTEED WITH BRENTON ELLIS OF ELLICO GROUP

With a reputation for providing exceptional trades people and delivering quality work, Ellico Group is more than just electrical and mechanical maintenance, servicing, repairs, and installs. It is about a strong, proficient workforce that excels in every aspect of the job.

At the helm of the operation is director Brenton Ellis, who has forged Ellico Group from the ground up and carved out a reputation for being one of the best names in the industry. A central hub of labour hire for the mining, industrial, agricultural, and automotive industries, the company services sites right across the region, from Mackay to the Bowen Basin.

Growing from a desire to be his own boss, Brenton established Ellico in 2018, working as a one-man band, before bringing his siblings into the mix to support the initial growth of the venture. A trained and qualified high voltage electrician, Brenton brings with him an extensive history in the industry, including mining electrician, commercial and agricultural experience, and install and repair.

Now five years on, Brenton has continued to diversify, with the skillset offered from his employees always expanding as demand commands. With about 45 tradesmen on the books, and another 45 employed as contractors, the extensive range of qualifications and experience provided by Ellico means no project is

too big or too small.

“We do a bit of everything, from electrical projects to machine rebuilds and automotive repair,” Brenton explained.

“I’m still on the tools today, and every morning I just get up and go, and keep taking every job I can - that’s how we managed to grow, people know we will always deliver.”

Brenton only grew the business slowly, by only employing a new person every three to six months, during the initial years. By ensuring that new staff are thriving and supported in the wider team, Brenton was able to continue to grow the business, seizing opportunities to expand when they presented themselves. Ellico continues to flourish with each new step and is now a name synonymous with quality and exceptional product and tradesmen.

Looking back over the course of his business so far, Brenton is proud of the reputation that Ellico has garnered.

“I never wanted it to be this big. I always said to myself ’10 guys is fine’, but then I took the plunge and chased every bit of work, and within six months, I went from someone who no one had ever heard of to someone who had vendors across a lot of pits

in the basin,” said Brenton.

“Through it all, I will always maintain my quality; I’d rather turn down a job than provide something that’s not suitable for the role and I think people respect that.”

Always looking to his next project, Brenton now has his eyes set on another industry expansion, taking on big contracts to supply mine sites with invaluable resources. He also intends to expand the business interstate, pioneering the growth of the Ellico Group name across Australia.

Despite his ambitions, however, Brenton is always turning his sights back to the Mackay homebase, with his sister and brother still close to central operations, as well as his wife overseeing critical aspects of the business. Family is important to Brenton, and he is consistently checking in on his staff making sure they are the best they can be.

“My boys know I have their back, I’ll go to site at 2am to make sure they’re okay, if they need me. Because they look after me too, and without them, this operation would never have grown the way it has.”

Although being on call close to 24 hours a day, Brenton spends quality time with his wife, Amy and close friends and family, as well as riding his motorbikes.

FOOD IS FAMILY

WITH JOE PANUCCIO FROM PARADISO RESTAURANT

La Familia is at the heart of Italian cuisine and authentic family recipes, fine-tuned and finessed over the years, are often brought to life by the loving hands of future generations, bringing the rich tapestry of the past to life. Local restaurateur, Joe Panuccio, understands this more than most, having spent the last 15 years working alongside those closest to him. His father, Angelo, can often be found hand-rolling pasta or making meatballs in the kitchen of Paradiso, his sister Vanessa spends her days mixing delicious gelato flavours for Gelatiamo Dolce and his wife, Deanna, loves creating extravagant Italian cakes for their patisseries.

A successful businessman who owns three restaurants, two gelato dessert bars and one express takeaway, Joe started from humble beginnings, working part-time at a Pizzeria in Melbourne on the weekends. At the same time, his career at Optus during weekdays was taking off and he was soon promoted to manager at the store, but it was on the weekend making pizza where Joe felt happiest.

“Our family has this beautiful background of food, and I was loving making pizzas – so I was happier on the weekend,” said Joe.

“This was when we decided to bring all the beautiful food we can cook at home into a restaurant, and that’s what we’ve continued to do to this day.”

It was 15 years ago that the family opened the doors to their first restaurant, Lazy Joe’s, in the tourist mecca of Mornington Peninsular. This was also the first time any of them had run their own restaurant. Joe was just 18 years old and, while his mum worked at the restaurant full-time, the rest of the family had second jobs to supplement their income. Soon enough though, Lazy Joe’s popularity spread, and the whole family worked together full time, with the business flourishing.

They soon opened a second business, a pizzeria nearby, and one of Joe’s proudest moments is watching it become a “real hit!”

Almost 10 years ago, when Joe and Deanna were married on Hamilton Island, the idea of living in the Whitsundays was first discussed. The family looked to the mainland and jumped at the opportunity to start La Marina Italian Restaurant at Port of Airlie. Soon, Joe’s mum, dad, brother, and sister also moved up to the region, but just eight weeks after opening the doors, Cyclone Debbie hit the Whitsundays, putting unprecedented stress on their new venture.

Despite this, Joe continued to push forward and his business story soon became one of perseverance, resilience, and seizing opportunities in a downturn.

“We opened Paradiso 12 weeks before the pandemic!” says Joe.

“We then expanded during COVID, opening our Gelato shop right in the middle. We expanded before we were ready but at the time, I saw an opportunity and we invested heavily at the worst possible time, but it paid off. When you see opportunities, you’ve got to grab them, it’s all about trying to see things before it happens and making calculated risks.”

Two months ago, when Joe opened the doors to his third restaurant, Lazy Joe’s Cantina, aptly named after the family’s first restaurant but with a Mexican twist, Joe was nervously wondering which natural disaster would hit the region.

“But it’s so far so good!” said Joe.

With his three signature restaurants, local gelato shop, a newly opened gelato venture in Townsville and the Express takeaway in Cannonvale, Joe is a busy man who credits his success to his family and broader team of “core people” he also considers family. Employing over 60 staff, Joe is constantly on the move, but when he does enjoy downtime, he loves returning to Hamilton Island for short getaways with his wife and their 18-month-old son Noah.

Adynamic leader and a hands-on boss, Marcus Taylor is the new face at the helm of Daydream Island and Living Reef, in charge of bringing one of our favourite boutique resort islands into a fresh new era. Opening the island up to new opportunities and connections with the mainland community, Marcus is dedicated to innovation, and it all starts with creating a solid team of staff.

“The first thing I want to do is consolidate, do what we are doing and do it really well, build a great team and then we can start thinking bigger,” he said.

“This starts by creating a community, a fun environment for people to work in and this naturally feeds into customer satisfaction - happy staff, happy guests, happy owners!”

Originally from South Africa, Marcus met his Australian wife in the UK and the couple spent a few years in his home-country before moving over to hers in 2003. A diving trip to the Whitsundays shortly after their arrival sparked a passion for the region and they returned to Brisbane to pack their bags, deciding to move here before they’d even got jobs. Fortunately, Hamilton Island offered them both an opportunity and they spent the next 14 years on the island where Marcus upskilled in every aspect of hotel and resort operation.

During this time the couple also had three children who were all born at Proserpine Hospital. The family eventually moved down to Port Macquarie where Marcus began working for the Rydges brand, but he always had his eye on returning to the Whitsundays one day. Soon fate intervened when the position of General Manager for Daydream Island presented an opportunity too good to resist.

“The project ahead is something that is really exciting and from a professional level it’s very fulfilling to me,” he said.

“I finally get something to make my own, it’s an amazing opportunity to have free reign and I am looking forward to making it a success.”

While many managers prefer to sit in the office and run operations, Marcus likes to be active and can often be seen out and about at the resort, pitching in with the rest of his team.

“I’m not someone who will manage from the office, I think you can only really drive a hospitality team if you are in there with them,” he said.

“This morning I was running breakfast service and it reminded me of the reason I love this industry so

much!”

“I love the high energy, the social aspect of working with teams and the insane half an hour then it goes quiet. I’ve done it all and I’m not scared to pitch in, and I think the team respond well to that.

“I can’t walk past tables that are dirty, I need to jump in and help, I could never walk away and see a team fail.”

Marcus is self-confessed introvert who shines with enthusiasm in his professional role but likes to retire to nature and solitude to recharge in his personal time. He loves quiet early morning paddles on his surf ski or relaxing anywhere near the water.

Daydream Island has 240 rooms and employs over 150 staff, all of whom report to Marcus. Bringing this team together is a central focus in the first six months and so is opening the Island up, both to passing yachties looking for a resort stay and Whitsunday locals for day trips and weekend escapes. The resort is also offering moorings for boats and yachts off its jetty. A short 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland makes Daydream Island the perfect getaway.

SERVICE WITH A SMILE AT MIRAGE WHITSUNDAYS

Giving customers the gold standard service they deserve is at the heart of every holiday at Mirage Whitsundays, where General Manager Michael Quigley infuses every element with memorable moments that whisk you away. Putting a high value on both the property and the delivery, Michael ensures that the smile you receive as you walk through the doors, transcends to the small touches and creature comforts in the rooms, and extends right down to the manicured lawns and the delightfully extravagant buffet breakfast. “I’m a big believer in value for money and while the type of customer we attract isn’t necessarily counting every dollar, I still think there should be good value in what they pay,” said Michael. Originally from Townsville, it was 10 years ago when Michael embarked on a working holiday around Australia, but only made it three hours south where he became captivated by the Whitsundays and the career opportunities offered. Starting his working life as a qualified counsellor, Michael spent much of his early days working long hours in two separate jobs, one where he helped people work through their problems by offering his counselling services and the second in a holiday park where he helped people have fun. When it came time to choose, Michael was on the cusp of quitting hospitality to focus on

his counselling career, until a life-changing epiphany took hold and set him on a new trajectory towards the fulfilling life he has today.

“I decided I would rather be around happy people on holidays, than around sad people in hospitals,” said Michael.

While relinquishing his role as counsellor, Michael still loves helping people and his vibrant energy was something others soon recognised as he swiftly moved up the ranks to command managerial positions. Starting out managing a holiday park in Townsville, Michael then moved onto managing a little motel where he took the reins for the first time, running and renovating the property himself.

Through this experience, Michael uncovered a passion for innovation and improving properties, one he was able to explore further when he helped the owners of the Airlie Cove in Jubilee Pocket with an extensive post-cyclone rebuild. From here, Michael was offered an opportunity to change pace slightly and moved into the Front Office Manager’s role at Coral Sea Resort. Once again, his abilities were quickly noticed, and he soon became Rooms Division Manager overseeing all hotel operations. After mastering diverse roles at such an iconic property, when the role of General Manager at Mirage Whitsundays became available, it strongly

resonated with Michael’s ambitions and existing skill set. He eagerly embraced the challenge of redefining a local industry leader and infusing a unique touch into the bespoke experience for all Mirage Whitsundays guests, boasting 104 luxury apartments, 38 Pools, A Gin Bar and Whisper Restaurant

As a strata managed complex, managing Mirage Whitsundays requires new levels of expertise including Michael obtaining his real estate licence. He now has the opportunity to liaise directly with multiple private owners every day including bringing three new owners into his letting pool. Michael has found this new dimension in client connection very rewarding and is now proud to have brought three additional private owners into his letting pool. He is also working closely with the body corporate to spearhead maintenance which includes the repainting of the exterior walls of the complex later this year.

In his free time, Michael loves being with his wife who he married just last year and the couple love playing with their new Corgi pup. When they get the opportunity, they enjoy travelling and sampling new hotels and experiences, although Michael says he is always pleased to discover Mirage has, in his opinion, the best rooms and staff in the world!

NICK BENNETT MINDS ALIGNED

In a world where alignment is the secret to unlocking potential, Minds Aligned serves as the master key.

At the helm of Minds Aligned stand Nick Bennett and Rowena Hardy, a dynamic duo on a mission. Their goal? To unlock potential by harmonizing actions, goals, and purpose. At the heart of this mission lies a fundamental question: Why? Yet, the journey doesn’t stop there. More than just asking; it’s about creating a space where voices resonate. Minds Aligned ensures a secure platform where each individual’s story is heard, fostering open conversations that bind people together.

At its core, Minds Aligned focuses on people. Without people, a business is directionless. Rowena explains, “Our goal is to help you discover your business’s essence and align people with it.”

Their approach is far from just process-driven; it’s about acknowledging that people drive processes.

Nick elaborates, “Culture exists whether you pay attention to it or not.”

Their process involves gathering everyone to define what success looks like and shaping the foundation of a thriving culture. They work hand in hand with businesses to craft a clear purpose, vision, and set of values, defined as behaviours that resonate at the core of the defined culture.

But Minds Aligned’s philosophy reaches beyond corporate corridors. It’s about individuals, too. Through one-on-one coaching conversations, both personal and professional, they unlock untapped potential, fostering ownership, effectiveness, and fulfilment.

Nick and Rowena don’t simply facilitate, they coach, and as coaches they act as catalysts for personal transformation. Their expertise spans generations, making a positive impact on individuals ranging from eight-year-olds to those in their eighties.

At the heart of Minds Aligned lies the foundational belief that true enlightenment arises not from having all the answers, but from asking the right questions.

“It’s about people in business,” Rowena said.

“Without people, the business isn’t going anywhere so it’s important to get the best from

your people, and that is achieved by aligning them to what your business is all about.”

Rowena explains that creating a space for conversations is crucial for success.

“People often underestimate the value they bring to the overall organisation and the difference they make,” she explained.

By providing a framework for individuals to connect with their purpose, Minds Aligned empowers them to feel more engaged, take ownership, and ultimately find greater purpose in their roles.

Nick emphasised their role to guide both organisations and individuals towards shared objectives.

“We are a facilitator for organisations to develop their teams to align their thinking toward a common goal,” he said.

“We’re helping people build their business through their people, and helping people build themselves.”

Ensuring the well-being of your workforce isn’t just a good practice—it’s a legal responsibility. According to recent legislative changes under Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, businesses are obligated to address psychosocial hazards in the workplace to prevent psychological harm. These hazards encompass various factors, such as job demands, inadequate support, and issues like sexual harassment or bullying.

To help businesses meet their legal obligations, Nick is accredited with a specialized tool designed to measure psychosocial safety. This tool equips organisations with the means to effectively recognise, manage and mitigate potential risks, fostering a healthier and more supportive work environment.

By addressing these crucial aspects, companies not only comply with the law but also create a conducive atmosphere that nurtures the overall well-being of their employees.

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF PROPERTY INVESTMENT USING YOUR SUPER MAXIMISING YOUR FINANCIAL POTENTIAL THROUGH PERSONALISED SUPERANNUATION STRATEGIES

When it comes to creating wealth, many people are now using self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) to invest in property. This approach offers a range of benefits, giving you control over your financial future.

With SMSFs, you can make smart decisions about how to invest your money, which can make a big difference in growing your wealth.

One great thing about using SMSFs for property investment is that it doesn’t have to strain your personal budget. You can become a property owner without feeling financially burdened. And if you see success with this strategy, it might even inspire you to invest in more properties outside of your SMSF.

When you invest in property through your SMSF, you can benefit from both the property’s value going up over time and the rental income it generates. Combined with your super contributions, these funds can help you pay off any money you borrow very quickly, strengthening your financial position even more.

SMSFs are designed for the longterm, which is a perfect fit for property investments that typically grow in value over many years. By making strategic investments, you can build a solid foundation for a secure retirement.

Investing in property can also protect you from inflation. As the prices of things go up, property values and rental income usually increase as well, so your purchasing power stays intact.

The best part about SMSFs is that you have complete control over your money. If you’re passionate about property, this means you can shape your financial journey exactly the way you want.

SHIRLZ’ KEY TAKEAWAYS:

1.Take Control: With SMSFs, you’re in the driver’s seat and are in charge of your money.

2. Choose Wisely: Investing in welllocated property is the key for lasting wealth gains.

3. Budget-Friendly Investment Pathway: Investing in property through SMSFs won’t put a strain on your wallet.

4. Double Benefits: Enjoy asset growth and steady rental income with SMSFs.

5. Think Long-Term: SMSFs match property’s long-haul growth, securing your future and protecting against inflation.

6. Get Help: Find someone you know, like and trust who is successfully using their super to build wealth through property and leverage from their expertise.

“Genes load the Gun, Environment pulls the Trigger.”

With Nutritional Therapist Rhonda Muller

Did you know? 44% of the population have a gene mutation that cannot detox effectively, process many chemicals or synthetic supplements.

Diet, supplementation, activation and lifestyle factors impact whether these genes are expressed or activated. Lifestyle changes help to protect the body from negative health consequences impacted by stress, medication, toxins and genetic variants.

Each generation is becoming weaker and weaker. We’re witnessing a shocking growth of chronic illness and disease, especially in children!

Autism 1 in 36, ADHD 10%, Asthma 10%, Autoimmune Disorders 20%, Cardiovascular 1 person dies every 33 seconds, 15-20% Eczema, Infertility 1 in 6, Obesity increased fivefold, Mental Health 44%. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity has increased by over 300% in 10-years and is a chronic medical condition triggered by various

chemicals, pollutants, aerosols, perfumes, etc leading to symptoms like anaphylaxis, inflammation of airways and skin, nausea, fatigue and more.

What’s driving this alarming trend? Is it our food, environment, toxins and chemicals in our homes? Is Big-Pharma and Agribusiness hijacking our health?

Let’s look at the Chemical Load. Every day, we’re surrounded by thousands of chemicals in the air, water, soil, food, clothes, furniture, toys, cosmetics and medicines. Approximately 6% of the world’s disease burden, including chronic diseases, cancers, neurological and developmental disorders — 8 % of deaths are attributed to chemicals.

Did you know?

A 2005 US Infant Umbilical Cord Blood Study detected 287 Chemicals!

180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 known to be toxic to the brain and nervous system, 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.

What can you do?

I advocate a holistic yet scientifically grounded approach to healthcare, identifying the root cause, supporting my clients towards longterm good health. This wholistic client-focused approach better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century.

Introducing our new Comprehensive Genetic Testing alongside general and functional testing (allergy, bloods, urine, microbiome), this new tool helps elevate your family’s health-span and longevity.

Genetics hold the key to unlocking insights into your health, this new test zooms in on Vital Health Categories: Athletic Performance, Cardiovascular Health, Cognitive Performance, Detoxification, Digestion, DNA Protection & Repair, Energy, Hormone Health, Immune Support, Inflammation, Metabolism, Mental Health, Methylation and Stress. It shows where vitamin, mineral requirements may be higher, which foods, drinks, drugs, and toxins you’re sensitive to, how this applies to your family history and current blood work. Gain in-depth knowledge into the root-causes of health issues based on your personal genetic and biochemical makeup, guiding you to make informed modifications to your diet, lifestyle, and environment working towards a healthier you from the ground up.

THE BACKBONE TO EXPERIENCE HEALING THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Much like the family car, the human body requires regular check ups to avoid future pain, discomfort and injury. The team at Experience Healing have built on almost a decade of service to provide the Mackay community with careful, considered and committed chiropractic care. Patients are welcomed into their warm and inviting space where helping people is the number one goal.

Chiropractor Dr Mathew Tibbitts brings a unique perspective to chiropractic. He draws on his extensive experience in personal training and implements his practical understanding of the human body, ensuring patients are equipped with the tools and techniques to continue their recovery long after their initial appointment. Dr Mat thought he’d found his calling as a personal trainer, but discovered he could help people more outside of the gym. He embarked on his chiropractic degree at the age of 27, working with Experience Healing while he studied as a Chiropractic Assistant, upskilling with massage therapy before graduating and taking over the business in 2022. It might seem like a rapid career rise, but Dr Mat’s knowledge allows him to draw on techniques from physiotherapy and massage with the added benefit of chiropractic adjustment.

“The key things we’re trying to promote with people are movement, strength, posture and balance,” said Dr Mat. “If there’s a lack of movement or strength somewhere, that can easily lead to a pain signal. If we keep improving strength and movement, their posture improves, and with that, the balance within their body improves. We’re trying to get people out of pain but we’re also trying to correct overall posture and balance, maintaining this by encouraging our patients to continue regular care. We do that through chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, dry needling, cupping therapy and laser.”

Experience Healing is the only chiropractor in the region with laser capabilities, their K Laser technology allowing them to accelerate healing from sprains, strains and superficial injuries by up to 50% through the stimulation of cell repair. It’s yet another example of the practice’s commitment to customer care and recovery.

Dr Mat is aided by a strong, caring and dedicated team, including Manager Kristy and Chiropractic Assistants Tanisha and Miranda. Miranda is also a full-time chiropractic student, proving Experience Healing’s dedication to fostering the next generation of chiropractors in the region. As the business continues to grow, so too will the team as they look to expand and recruit a dedicated Massage Therapist and a second full-time Chiropractor. It’s exciting times at Experience Healing, with recent renovations and refurbishments creating a welcoming environment for patients and staff alike. Moving forward, a big focus for the team will be its community involvement through sponsorship, fundraising events and building relationships with other local businesses.

It’s that patient care that motivates Dr Mat to do what he does. He thrives on creating a bond with his patients, ensuring they are happy and comfortable, even if they may be in pain. No matter the ailment, whether it’s back pain, a headache or an injured ankle, Experience Healing can help.

“In this job, hearing people’s feedback on how much I’ve helped them keeps me determined and motivated to be here for their needs every day,” said Dr Mat. experiencehealingchiro.com.au
