Sometimes you can be the perfect friend and other times you are not. However, it is knowing that no matter what is unfolding in your crazy world, someone loves you beyond what is right and what is wrong, what is perfect and what isn’t, but simply just because, that keeps you going.

I am lucky to spend time, laughing, crying and growing with two of these friends every month and it amazes me how much you can learn about yourself when surrounded by true friendship. Then of course there is that one “bestie” you have known forever and, despite all your imperfections, dramas and lack of time, she is still there with her arms wide open waiting for you, anytime you need her. “I love you Jules!” My friends… “You may not remember the time you let me go first, Or the time you dropped back to tell me it wasn’t that far to go, Or the time you waited at the crossroads for me to catch up. You may not remember any of those, but I do and this is what I have to say to you: Today, no matter what it takes, we ride home together.” unknown Enjoy April and your friendships!

get that new phone feeling

every year

Telstra is introducing the option for customers to get a new smartphone every 12 months as an add-on with selected handsets across their new 24-month consumer plans. The feature, dubbed ‘Telstra New Phone Feeling’, allows customers to trade to a new smartphone after 12 months, instead of waiting two years. Customers simply pay $10 per month on top of their plan and return their existing phone, undamaged and in good working order, to trade up to a new model on a new two year handset plan. Telstra is the first carrier in Australia to make this offer available across a range of plans for consumer customers.

New plans with peace of mind built in

‘Telstra New Phone Feeling’ launches alongside Telstra’s new Mobile Accelerate Plans, which bring together generous allowances, greater cost certainty and a connection to Australia’s largest and most reliable national mobile network. Each plan comes with a safety net for excess MMS and voice charges so customers will pay no more than $130 per month on eligible call types. Excess data rates in Australia have been reduced from 10 cents to 3 cents per megabyte – one of the lowest rates in Australia.

“Our new plans cater for the continued demand for voice calling and the growth in mobile internet use and because customers tell us cost certainty is really important to them, they offer peace of mind that they won’t face big surprises should they exceed their included allowances,” Mr Bray said.

Tanjala Gica / Shutterstock.com

The new 24 month Mobile Accelerate Plans range from $55 per month, with an option for light data users who want a new phone with their plan and tops out at $130 per month, with a plan for avid communicators, which comes with unlimited national voice, SMS and MMS to standard Australian numbers, and 3GB of data to use in Australia.

“We think our new $70 Mobile Accelerate Plan will be particularly popular with customers. It includes $700 worth of talk and MMS, unlimited SMS to standard Australian numbers while you’re in Australia and 1.5GB of data to use in Australia. Plus, for $10 more a month customers can trade up to the latest flagship smartphone on a new 24 month handset plan halfway through their plan, when they return their existing handset undamaged and in good working condition.

Mr Bray said that whichever Mobile Accelerate Plan customers chose, they will enjoy the benefits of being connected in more places on Australia’s largest and most reliable national mobile network.

“We also know that a great performing network is central to value from a mobile plan. That’s why the Telstra Mobile Network offers four times the 4G coverage area of any other Australian mobile network and we’re investing $1.2bn in our mobile network this financial year to ensure customers continue to enjoy a superior coverage area, more reliable speeds and fewer dropouts.”

The Sarina Rural Skills Centre is a well-equipped engineering, rural skills and computer training facility owned by Sarina State High School. The facility is not only available for our local Sarina State High students but also to the public for after school and weekend training. The centre was built originally to provide students with an alternative to standard academic courses in agriculture and engineering, which is why the $7,500 to purchase new cattle yards was a huge benefit to not only Sarina students but also to the wider community supporting our agriculture. This is just one of the many projects supported by your local Sarina Community Bank® Branch.

Thinking of buying the worst house

on the best street? To “look for the worst house in the best street, not the best house in the worst street” is an age-old cliché” that you will hear almost any time anyone mentions buying real estate. Location is just as important as what to buy when it comes to making a real estate purchase. Where a property is located generally is much more important than what a property looks like, as it’s something that you just can’t change. Properties that are closer to public transport and infrastructure such as schools, shops and sports facilities tend to achieve a higher value due to convenience and lifestyle. So in saying this, compromising cosmetic features for a better location is in most cases a wise decision. Remember a house costs roughly the same to build regardless of where it’s built, unless it’s being built on the side of a cliff or in a remote location.

properties have attracted the largest gains in recent years. You will notice homes for sale near the beach around Dolphin Heads have a much higher asking price. Many of these homes have already been renovated and offer larger blocks. A great example of this is our latest listing at 31 Ian Wood Dr. Dolphin Heads, check it out on realestate.com dee@mrre.com.au | 0409 434 259

The reason a house may be more expensive to purchase than a similar house in another location is the value of the land. The reason buying the worst house on the best street is often good advice is because big gains can be made in the future, though it is still important to do your due diligence and obtain a building and pest inspection before purchase. You don’t want to discover additional expense in your renovations robbing you of the profit you expected to achieve! If you have done your research correctly, after renovations you could end up with the best house on the best street. Older homes close to the city centre are generally in strong demand. cash flow Cash flow is one of the most important factors in managing your business, especially in our recent economic downturn. Even profitable businesses can fail because of poor cash flow management. So how does a business manage its cash flow better? The first step is to prepare a cash flow forecast and one of the excuses businesses use for not doing this is that they don’t know when their income is coming in. When it comes to putting it on paper, most business owners are surprised by how much they do know. We regularly prepare cash flow forecasts for many businesses including builders, developers, manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors and, of course, ourselves. It helps you plan ahead, it allows you to see the state of your bank account/s at any particular time so you can plan for capital purchases, advertising campaigns, new projects that may require upfront expenses or capital investment and, of course, tax liabilities. A smart cash flow forecast will have lots of clever formulas in it so you can plug in things like; ‘what if we win this project?’, ‘what if we raise prices by 5%?’, ‘what if we improve our gross margin by 1% or take on an extra employee?’. It is a living document that is constantly updated so the actual results flow through.

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

Once this valuable business tool is in place, you are able to make informed decisions about the direction of your business. We recently helped one of our clients determine which type of job was the most profitable for his business and showed him the flow on effects of this type of job in his cash flow forecast. It was clear that the business needed a change in direction, and it was an easy decision for our client to make, and follow through with, as he could see the positive changes in his bank account with each passing month. This business is now more profitable and has a steady cash flow, with the owner working smarter, not harder.

Advanced Algal Technologies Limited / Futura Holdings

What does Bowen have in common with Micro Algae & Environmental Responsibility?

The old salt works in Bowen is about to go through a transformation, a Sydney based company, Advanced Algal technologies limited, will be operating their business out of the salt works within the next few months. The requirements to grow micro algae are flat land, water and sunshine, Bowen has these three components in abundance, the climate allows production 12 months of the year and there is no shortage of sunshine. The availability of the old salt works provided the flat land which is already zoned for this activity. The operations of Cheetam salt and Ridleys Corporation considered the sale to Advanced Algal technologies in January. The Sydney based company’s chairman was introduced to the site by the Local Landmark Agent Mr Gary Johns during a visit to Bowen. Mr Kevin Murphy immediately saw the potential for his company to move into commercial algae production at the salt works site.

“Algae have the potential, in future years, to feed the world.” Murphy said, “Besides being natural and quick growing it can be harvested every day, 365 days of the year. To give an example, If a farmer had 1.5 hectares of land and decided to grow wheat for animal feed, he would plant it in May and harvest it in late November. In a good year he would harvest approx. 6 tons on a good patch of ground. Wheat is 11 percent protein so additives need to be added to bring the animal feed up to 20 precent. Algae on the other hand growing on 1,5 hectares would harvest over 3000 tons in the same 12 month period at a protein content of over 50 percent. Algae farming is the agriculture of the future.

Mr Murphy said, “The location is about as good as it gets, when you see large algae operations in Israel and the Mojave Desert in the USA you appreciate the potential for Bowen. Besides the climate Bowen is about the prettiest place I have ever seen during my travels. We would be proud to bring overseas visitors to Bowen.“ The company, Advanced Algal technologies Limited developed over 7 patents in the past four years on the commercial production of micro algae, to best explain what micro algae are, Mr Murphy said, “If you have ever owned a swimming pool and forgot to put in the chemicals , it goes green over night. That green stuff is what we grow.”

Besides being used for animal feed, algae can be used for human food, Mrs Takako Hutchings a Japanese food specialist, uses algae to make muffins, bread, ice cream and the best omelettes you have ever tasted. Takako is based in the Sydney office and believes algae can unlock a huge future for human food production.

It is the fastest growing plant on earth, 300 times quicker that any other, and besides growing fast it consumes huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it is growing.

Algae have been widely researched by many countries for renewable fuels such as Bio Diesel and ethanol. However AAT have focused their technology on growing algae for human and animal food. Micro algae, besides growing very fast, are over 50 percent protein and contain all 12 soluble amino acids and natural Omega 3 oils. Most health food shops carry Spirulina and Chlorella in tablets and capsule form. These algae are highly desirable for athletes and high protein diets, most of our Olympics contenders use algae in their diets. Algae are ideally suited for animal diets. Several Australian companies have analysed the algae grown by AAT such as Ridleys, George Weston’s and Riverlea pork and see algae as an important component in animal diets and welfare. It is completely natural.

Algae are also highly desirable for pharmucital production as some species of algae contain valuable compounds for treating neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and muscular dystrophy.

“There is a whole new world to be discovered in the uses for algae,” Mr Murphy said. Bowen is fortunate to be blessed with the climate and the algae farming will create many new jobs for the area. The salt farm is far bigger than we need for our commercial production of algae Mr Murphy said and he has suggested that to me of the old ponds at the rear of the farm be filled and returned to natural ground levels. The old ponds would be ideal to take the mud from Abbot Point instead of dumping it at sea where potential contamination could occur to the reef, this possibility has been put forward to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Queensland Bulk Ports for consideration. The salt works is already set up with the old bundled ponds and has a spare capacity to take over 3 million tons of the dredged material. The technology needed to treat the mud and neutralise the sulphuric acid is well within the capability of AAT as they employ specialist scientists and chemists during the development of their technology in treating coal fired flue gas. It is not rocket science, treating and neutralising acid sulphate mud and as we intend to fill the old ponds, this seems like a simple solution to Abbot point mud problem.

How long do you have to get your client’s attention?

8 seconds is the golden rule of the Internet, the time you have to cut through and get your message across before your online visitor loses interest. Think about your own behaviour. What do you do when you land on a website which isn’t what you were looking for or one that is loading slowly? You bounce out! The average person is exposed to approximately 5000 advertising messages daily. With all these distractions, this rule not only applies to the Internet, rather all marketing activity. So, how do you cut through? Identify your goal. That may sound obvious, but it is often not defined before businesses spend their valuable marketing dollars. Identify your audience. Think about how you can gain exposure to them. What are their interests or hobbies? What do they read, watch and listen to? What publications are available within your target market?

With your goal and target market defined, consider the opportunities and decide what marketing vehicles will give you the best reach. Be sure to measure your efforts, otherwise how will you qualify your campaign as a success or failure? All these questions aim to stimulate your thought process around your marketing strategy. Clear goals and strategies as well as constant finetuning based on previous campaign results will crystalise your marketing strategy. This will in turn cut through to your audience. If this has encouraged you to think a little harder about your own marketing strategy, feel free to touch base. Let’s get your business busy! When it comes to your health there’s no compromise, which is why we make it easier and more affordable to take charge of your well-being today.

business After opening the doors to his Mackay surgical practice in 1995, Dr Cody Fitzgerald has given his patients the flexibility and comfort of having their procedures done in the comfort of his dedicated operating room. With his cheerful practice nurse Roxy, patients are given personalised care in a relaxing environment.

We also perform sclerotherapy, for varicose veins and spider veins, which requires no anesthetic at all. In fact, all procedures we conduct have no anesthetic or theatre fees. Most varicose veins don’t require surgery and scelotherapy is a convenient and cost-effective way of removal. As the colder months are nearing, it is a good time to consider varicose vein removal, as compression stockings need to be worn for two weeks after the procedure for best results. We excise a range of skin lesions and can give expert advice on a range of skin conditions. As Queensland has a higher than average rate of skin cancer, getting your spots checked is one of the best things you can do for your health. The only costs involved are for the consult, the surgery

and pathology. We offer an efficient service, with the added convenience of not having a hospital visit. Our post-operative charges, including the removal of sutures, is free of charge. We charge concessional fees for aged pension, disability and health care card holders. We welcome you to visit our comfortable rooms at the North Mackay Private Hospital, where your health, comfort and peace of mind is our number one priority.

it comes to “ When your health there’s no compromise..

Vasectomies are conducted under light IV sedation, making the experience more pleasant. The consultation and surgery are performed on the same day, reducing the number of visits. This method results in no anesthetic fee, no theatre fee and a reduction in the overall time a patient needs to stay in care. Dr Fitzgerald is the only specialist surgeon who can offer a vasectomy outside of hospital.

A rainbow will only form after drops of rain have fallen and while it can be difficult to see past the storm, every cloud does have a silver lining. Sophie Camm and her family faced a difficult time when they were told that her stepfather had cancer. After several years of him battling the disease, Sophie made the decision to leave Brisbane, the city where she was born and raised, to support her mum in the Whitsundays. She was a vibrant 22 year old, with a promising career with an advertising agency, but she applied for three months leave for the love of her family. The silver lining to Sophie’s cloud was that this fateful decision led to her meeting her future husband, Lawson. She never returned to her advertising position in Brisbane and has now been part of the local community for 19 years. The couple live with their five children at Cambil Brahmans, a Brahman cattle station which also incorporates fields of sugar cane. Farming was in Lawson’s blood and Sophie fell in love with the lifestyle. Soon after they first met, the couple lived on one of his parent’s cattle properties for three years. It was a four hour drive to Proserpine from the 100,000 acre station with only a weekly visit from the mail man. A far cry from chaotic city lifestyle Sophie was used to. The couple then returned back toward the coast, to Cambil Brahmans, to purchase their own cane farm at Mt Julian. Their eldest child, Georgia, attends boarding school in Mackay, with visits home on the weekend. Sophie and Lawson followed with four

boys, Mitchell, Charlie, Liam and the youngest, James, who is six years old. With five children under the age of 10, Sophie set up an online business selling children’s clothes, allowing her to have a career while she raised her children and helped on the farm. In 2012 she went into business with a close friend to purchase Cherrie Baby in Proserpine and, in 2013, purchased the other half of the business, which she runs with the help of four fantastic ladies. Cherrie Baby is far from just a boutique for babies, stocking a large range of clothing and shoes from newborn up to children aged 12. It supplies quality wooden toys, to last the test of time, just like the ones our grandparents gave us. Also, not forgetting the wonderful mums, Cherrie Baby supply fashionable maternity wear, handbags, giftware and home décor items, making it a one-stop boutique shopping destination. Cherrie Baby have expanded their range so much that they have moved to spacious new premises at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre in Cannonvale, an exciting new chapter for Sophie and her team. Juggling a career, life on the farm and five children hasn’t always been a piece of cake but Sophie loves the challenge of business. Being able to offer other mums beautiful bargains is the cherry on the top that makes it all worthwhile.

Hitch a Ride

Mackay airport, Rob Porter

Imagine if you had the ability to ride a unicycle over a tight-rope, while spinning plates on your nose and juggling batons of fire. Being General Manager of Mackay Airport requires just as much multi-tasking but replace the batons with planes in the air and the balancing act with ground operations, asset maintenance and administration. Rob Porter began his aviation career 27 years ago, as a rescue firefighter. He was stationed at a number of airports, from Sydney and Canberra, to Alice Springs and was lucky to represent the ARFFS, (Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Services), in visits to international airports, including Saudi Arabia, India, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Fiji. After years of experience under his fire-fighting belt, Rob took up a position at Gold Coast Airport as the General Manager of Operations. During his five years on the Gold Coast, Rob led the operations team through a $100 million terminal redevelopment, among other major improvements, and the introduction of three A330 services to Japan. He later applied for the position of General Manager at Mackay Airport, to build upon his passion for Australian regional aviation, with Central Queensland and Mackay at its heart. As Mackay Airport’s General Manager, there is never a dull moment. Rob oversees every department to ensure the airport provides an efficient experience for travelers and understands that first impressions for the district can start as soon as a visitor steps off the plane. As a major economic driver for the region, Mackay Airport’s focus is on the continual development of the airport itself, as well as supporting Mackay’s business and tourism sectors to increase opportunities for Mackay and the surrounding region. The recent inclusion of a direct Mackay to Gold Coast route, through Jetstar, is an example of the continual movement forward to provide more options in and out of Mackay. Rob is a board member with Mackay Tourism and devotes time to engage with industry-related organisations, such as the Mackay Whitsunday REDC and Australian Airports Association, to ensure Mackay Airport remains at the forefront of aviation innovation and development. Rob is supported at home by his wife, Cheryl, and three children, Ben, Sarah and Kyle. His children are all gifted athletes and are particularly good at softball. Rob was also a talented basketballer growing up in Canberra, and trialed with the Canberra Raiders as a 20 year old. He was the leading scorer in Canberra’s A-grade competition for a number of years. He’s a keen supporter of his children’s sporting passions and recently climbed Mt Kilimanjaro with his son Kyle. With exciting plans for the continual development of Mackay Airport, Rob is keen to see the airport through its future planned developments, to keep Mackay’s future flying high.

Doctor Dolittle

David Lemmon, Northern Beaches Vet Hospital

From extracting a fish hook from the throat of a tortoise, to relieving a blocked salivary gland of an Indian porcupine, no creature is too great or too small to be seen by Northern Beaches Vet Hospital’s very own Doctor Dolittle, David Lemmon.

as a locum. He was amused when the Englishmen apologised profusely for giving him a ‘hard job’ on his first day, giving injections to 20 head of cattle. He didn’t have the heart to tell them right away that he had previously been used to 2000 cattle.

Dr Lemmon grew up in the north-west rural town of Cloncurry. He automatically had an inherent love of animals but, when his little dog was run over, he had thoughts of becoming someone who could save the lives of animals.

When he returned to Australia, David moved to Mackay and he and wife Paula now have five daughters, the youngest of which is also currently studying to become a veterinarian.

He went on to study at Townsville Grammar School, and then enrolled with the University of Queensland in Brisbane. As he sat on the steps of St. Johns College, at the University of Queensland, pre-enrolled to study a Bachelor of Arts/Laws, he asked himself what he was doing. He stood up and chose to follow his heart instead of his head and enquired if it was too late to register for veterinary science. This was a decision he never once regretted, as throughout his career he has sustained the same inherent love of animals he felt as a child. After his studies, he jumped back into the rural setting he had grown up amongst and worked on a grazing station in the Gulf of Carpentaria. He mucked in with a bit of everything from veterinary work to mustering and fencing, and was instrumental in the Tuberculosis eradication campaign. The hours were long and the work was hard. David spent two years working in Mackay, before embarking to England 26 www.corelife.com.au

Dr Lemmon has performed an ovario-hysterectomy on a baboon who had ovarian cancer. He assisted a 75kg python with a sore throat and, when the circus came to town, he helped Jumbo the elephant who had developed a tummy ache. It’s a varied position where, on a day-to-day basis, he never knows what animal he will see next. David is a keen thoroughbred breeder and has developed a specialty when it comes to caring for horses. He also enjoys a good game of golf, but admits that he spends more time waving to the course as he drives to work than he does teeing off on the fairway. One day he hopes to live his dream of volunteering his veterinary skills on a game reserve in Africa or with the orangutans in Borneo. Whether it’s a koala, kangaroo or loved family kitty, David is dedicated to seeing it climb, bounce and pounce back to full health.

Sandi Cant Hypoxi Body Studio, emerald

Emerald is a community full of people achieving world-firsts and Sandi Cant is no exception. Her Hypoxi Body Studio is the only home-based Hypoxi studio in the world, an exception which required special permission from Austria to attain. This has allowed the revolutionary weightloss and cellulite reduction technique to come to Emerald, technology which is rarely seen outside of larger cities. Sandi grew up in Roma but her adventurous spirit led her to travel overseas when she turned 18. During the late 80’s she worked in England for a record store, where she encountered a range of rock stars who came in store for appearances. She met REM, Green Day, UB40, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. A perk of the job meant she went to numerous concerts and fondly remembers seeing Van Morrison in Manchester, who walked down the aisle and stood beside where she was sitting. After time in Canada, she moved to Emerald with her best friend. Her friend moved to Cairns but Sandi stayed, where she met her husband. The couple have three children who were raised in Emerald, but now attend boarding school in Brisbane. Their oldest son, Oran, is in year 12 and they have twins, a boy and a girl, Ethan and Emmerson in year 8. Her children used to compete at Pony Club Gymkhanas but that has now been overtaken by a love of campdrafting. The family have a number of

horses and cattle and have recently purchased a stallion to breed with. Just before her children had all left for boarding school, Sandi completed a Health Coaching course through Integrative Nutrition (USA) and felt she could help people achieve their goals, just as she was trying to achieve some of her own. She contracted Leptospirosis in 2010 and struggled to regain her health. While in Sydney, she saw an advertisement for Hypoxi and had 8 sessions over 10 days. She was impressed with the results and began the process to set up Hypoxi in Emerald. Hypoxi combines alternating high and low pressure with exercise to target fat in areas that are often difficult to lose from. It boosts circulation and oxygenates blood to remove toxins and fatty acids. Results are fast, with most clients seeing an average loss of 35cms in 12 sessions, some seeing that result in only six sessions. Sandi’s studio has three Hypoxi machines to cover the entire range of benefits that Hypoxi can achieve. Hypoxi can greatly improve skin tone and the appearance of cellulite, which exercise rarely helps to achieve by itself. Her passion for travel hasn’t faded, and in four years she plans to celebrate her 50th birthday in Italy. A dream made possible due to the new lease of life she has discovered from Hypoxi.

Ross & Andrea

Central bike centre emerald

From souks and sand to sunflowers and sapphires, Central Queensland’s Emerald is a far cry from the Middle East’s United Arab Emirates, but Ross and Andrea Drayton are still living life at full throttle. Ross was born into a rural lifestyle within a farming district of New South Wales, while Andrea grew up in Brisbane. The couple spent most of their lives in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast before heading off on the adventure of a lifetime, 10 years working and living in the United Arab Emirates. Living in the Middle East opened up endless travel possibilities, and allowed the couple to share a passion of exploration. They have visited more than 25 countries and have not finished yet. The travel bug is something which they have passed onto their family, as Ross’s youngest daughter completed her university degree in Dubai. Their children visited them in Dubai to celebrate Ross’ 50th birthday, including their wee granddaughter Ella, who was only 10 weeks old when she made the journey. Living and working in the UAE provided the opportunity for many memorable moments, especially for Ross who fondly remembers one particularly celebrity-laden trip. “Traveling from Dubai to Scotland via London, our aircraft departure was delayed, as we waited for late passengers. Finally, three people emerged to board the plane, including a gentleman wearing the most vivid purple suit I had ever seen. “I remembered thinking you would have to be pretty brave to wear something like that and then I recognised him as Sir Paul McCartney. Paul spent much of the flight pacing past my seat trying to settle his baby to sleep, so I spoke with him during the majority of the flight. One of the nicest guys I’ve met. “Once I had arrived in Scotland, I was told by staff that I was to host two guests who would be appearing at the Glasgow Jazz Festival. The following morning I had the pleasure of hosting an intimate breakfast for

Tony Bennett and B.B. King, again, they were fantastic people,” Ross said. Ross also had the pleasure of dining privately with the First Minister of Scotland, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi as well as other members of ruling families in the UAE but, after 10 years and with aging parents to consider, the couple decided it was time to head back to Australia. With a passion for motorcycles, particularly Harley Davidson’s, Ross was keen on purchasing a motorcycle dealership to allow the couple to run their own business. After considering a few options, Andrea and Ross chose Emerald as the location of their next adventure. A decision they say has been an extremely enjoyable one. In 2010, they took over the ownership of Central Bike Centre, a wellestablished motorcycle and ATV dealership, which has serviced the Central Highlands region for more than 40 years. Through strong brand recognition, Central Bike Centre has established a reputation for quality bikes, which are built to stand the test of time, even in the rugged and dry conditions of the Central Highlands. The dealership is the local franchise for Yamaha, Suzuki and Polaris, high-performance brands with a reputation for tough. Although performance is important, people make the difference. Central Bike Centre prides itself on the quality of workmanship due to factory trained technicians and having the latest diagnostic tools available to expedite problem solving. “Our most important asset is our loyal and hard-working staff. Their industry knowledge is second-to-none and their dedication is impressive. We appreciate how hard they work to keep our customers smiling,” Andrea said. When the couple aren’t hard at work, they enjoy nothing more than entertaining friends and hosting dinner parties. A celebration of good food and great people. Whether it’s hosting dignitaries in Dubai or good friends in Emerald, when it comes to fine cuisine, life’s too short for anything but the best.

A popular fossicking spot because little machinery was used to strip the area of most of its gems. Known for its green sapphires and large yellow sapphires, some of the world’s most famous sapphires have been located there, including a 332 carat rough yellow, aptly named the “Golden Willow”.

Emerald

With an array of fine restaurants, great shopping and historic points of interest, Emerald is the centre-point of the Central Highlands and an exciting destination to discover. The annual Sunflower festival attracts participants from all over the world.

Van Gough Sunflower Painting

Located in Morton Park is an enormous reproduction of one of Van Gough’s seven sunflower paintings. The painting itself is 7 by 10 metres and sits on a massive easel. It is one of three located worldwide in places with either a connection to sunflowers or Van Gough, himself. The other two are located in Canada and America, with hopes that one day all seven will be recreated. A mosaic walk, depicting 100 years of Emerald’s history, leads to the painting.

Fossilised Tree

At 250 million years old, this fossilized tree, which now sits outside of the town hall, is an impressive sight. It was unearthed in 1979 during construction of a new railway bridge across the Mackenzie River for Gregory Mine. It was presented to Emerald for its centenary celebrations by the mining company.

The region’s lead economic development agency Central Highlands Development Corporation (CHDC) says there are more than 3000 registered businesses in the Central Highlands region. “When showing potential investors and developers what the region has to offer their businesses, we regularly hear the comment “More than you expect,” so that has now become our tag line when promoting the region,” CHDC General Manager Sandra Hobbs says. “We have an exceptionally broad range of thriving businesses, which take a pro-active approach to developing and enhancing their practices to ensure they have the capability to respond to the forecast growth potential.” More than $12 billion worth of projects has been recently planned, progressed or completed in the region, according to CHDC’s latest Development Register. Furthermore, the latest Central Highlands Economic Profile states the region boasts a low unemployment rate of 2.8 percent and, while the mining sector has eased, agriculture, construction and wholesale trade have improved considerably.

“The current economic climate, whilst it is providing challenges, it’s also motivating operators to look at new, innovative ways of doing business and expanding their market,” Ms Hobbs says. The recent Central Highlands Business Excellence Awards demonstrates this point. The judges were impressed by what they called the “exceptionally high standard” of entries and found the finalists “displayed great passion, professionalism and commitment to excellence.” Businesses receive extensive support from CHDC’s Business Development Officer, including assistance to local suppliers to develop the skills needed to meet the demands of the resources and other sectors. CHDC has also expanded its free, online Central Highlands Business Directory to provide extensive, up-to-date information on businesses’ capabilities. “It’s an effective way to market their capabilities to the relevant industries and consumers more generally,” Ms Hobbs says. For more information, including the full list of award winners and a short media clip of the Central Highlands’ economic profile, visit www.chdc.com.au.

Real Solutions real results

As a teenage acne sufferer, I stumbled upon my career in an effort to find a solution to my acne. I had no idea it would lead me on a 27 year career (and counting). From my early training as a beauty therapist, I was driven to learn more. The more I learned, the more I knew how little I knew. Whenever I came across something I could not treat, I went out and advanced my education so that I could treat it. Today, this means the clinic is at the forefront of advanced techniques, treatments and education to support our clients and improve their lives. And I love it! I’m naturally a solutions based person and I like to find the answers. Together, Shardae, Yvonne and I, with the front desk support of Emma, share our passion and provide our services to the people of Emerald and surrounds.

Everyday we deal with things we don’t like about ourselves. This can take a toll on our confidence, our self-esteem and affect our whole lives. But more often than not there is a solution. You just have to know where to find it. Here at Central Highlands Laser and Dermal Therapy Centre, we can help you!

Your skin is your largest organ and as such its role is as much protection as it is working for your entire well-being. With this in mind, we offer a range of treatments to keep it not only looking good, but functioning well. I’ve been working with biomodulating lasers since 1999 and, with this modality, am able to treat a wide variety of skin conditions such as pre and post operative work, skin grafts, bone grafts, wounds, scar remodelling, musculo-skeletal issues, lymphatic drainage and much more. Often we incorporate multiple modalities to get the best results for our clients, whether we’re treating acne, age related conditions, general skin health or wounds. We have many tools to get the end result, plumping, tightening, removing, rebuilding, healing. We also look at the total picture. Often what you see on the surface is a reflection of what is going on inside the body, so we take a wholistic approach to make sure we are getting to the cause of the problem. We do this with supporting products, treatments and wellness professionals with referrals to other professionals when something is out of our skill range.

Range of Services Biomodulating laser therapy - For the treatment of acne,

pimples, wounds, burns, scars, scar remodelling, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, warts, fungi, cold sores, pre and post operative therapy, ageing, musculo-skeletal issues, lymphatic drainage, pain management and much more. Paramedical Skin Revision Treatments - And products for acne, pigmentation, ageing, congestion, redness, sun damage, lines and wrinkles, open pores and everything in betweeen. Removal of benign skin lesions - Such as warts, skin tags, cherry angiomas, damaged capillaries etc. IPL for hair removal - We also provide a large range of age management treatments designed to restore skin function, structure and rebuild ageing skin so that it looks healthy and fresh. Looking and feeling your best, no matter your age, is all about confidence, and with confidence comes the self-esteem to be the best you can be.

hope for forever homes CQ Pet Rescue

When we are feeling sad, the gentle nudge of their nose can make us smile. They don’t judge us based upon monetary value, only how kind our actions are. They show us the true meaning of unconditional love. They are smarter than we give them credit for and can teach us a lot about what is truly important in life. When these loving animals are mistreated, tossed aside like an outdated gaming console, it shows how cruel we, as people can be. Thankfully, there are also great people who restore faith in humanity, like the volunteers at CQ Pet Rescue. With no RSPCA presence in Emerald, three founding members began to help the Emerald community with the re-homing of unwanted pets. The local pound couldn’t afford to hold cats and dogs for longer than their holding period, so the helpless animals would, more often than not, be euthanised. This began in 2012 and from these humble beginnings, CQ Pet Rescue’s role within the community has now grown immensely. The executive committee is made up of seven volunteers and a further 24 foster carers regularly look after animals until their forever family can be found. More volunteers assist with fundraising activities to help fund vet bills.

Miss Indy was a two-month old pup who was brought into the centre with extensive injuries including an open head wound which looked like she had been shot. Despite her injuries and being slightly wary of people, she still wagged her tail in happiness. After six months in care, her confidence grew, her wounds healed and she became a playful, affectionate dog. For the team who had nursed her back to health, it was an emotional day to see her re-homed to a loving family who have taken excellent care of her. Without a team of dedicated and loving volunteers CQ Pet Rescue wouldn’t have been able to come to the rescue of so many pets. Vicki Ferguson, president of CQ Rescue, became involved by initially volunteering time during an adoption day. “I was up to my elbows in dog wash! From then, I helped at other fundraising events before going to an AGM to see how I could help further. Being part of a group with so much passion for animals is inspiring,” Vicki said. Foster carer, Tammy Donachy, knew she needed to help when she heard how many dogs and cats had been put to sleep the previous year by the pound.

In its first 13 months of operation, CQ Pet Rescue managed to re-home 140 animals and in the past eight months, already 135 animals have been re-homed, some as far afield as Ballarat in Victoria.

“Even if it was only a small number of dogs I could foster, it was better than them dying in the pound. I don’t believe any animal should be put to sleep because their previous owners haven’t acted responsibly,” Tammy said.

CQ Pet Rescue now have a strong relationship with the CHRC Pound and have significantly increased the re-homing rate of cats and dogs.

To view the beautiful pups and pussy cats who are looking for their forever homes, visit www.cqpetrescue.com to apply to become a foster parent today.

At any one time, the rescue centre usually has 30 pets looking for homes but, over the busy Christmas period, that number can increase to more than 50.

rotary club of emerald sunrise Every child should experience the joy of riding a bicycle, but with more and more traffic on the road, it’s not the safe learning environment it once was. The Rotary Club of Emerald is actively making this life skill safer for its young residents. “Sunrise Rotary Park in Emerald is a multifunctional park developed by Central Highlands Regional Council and Queensland Government Sport and Recreation grant. “It boasts a bicycle education track, including traffic signals, road signs and markings they will encounter, a world class BMX track, half basketball court and a tennis hit up wall. All encouraging an active outdoor lifestyle for our Community. “This is complemented by shade faculties, BBQ’s and toilets.” “This year, the Rotary Club of Emerald Sunrise has a couple of exciting initiatives coming up. Immediately, we are commencing a road safety training course targeting 9-10 year old students to complete a 10 hour bicycle safety program. This is supported by a Queensland Government road safety grant. This will ensure these participants are proficient and safe road users. “The course will soon be advertised throughout Emerald schools. Participants will undergo supervised instruction in the safe operation of a bicycle in a protected environment. “The completion of this course will coincidence with another exciting event at the Sunrise Rotary Park. On 7th June we are having a Queensland Week Day at Sunrise Park celebration. Again, this is possible by assistance from the Queensland Government and local sponsorship.

stopping crime

Crime Stoppers is a partnership between the community volunteer organisation Crime Stoppers Queensland Limited, the Queensland Police Service, the media and the public.

Crime Stoppers is successful in Queensland because of the 500+ volunteers spread throughout the State who contribute their valuable time to ensure the success of each local area committee. The Emerald community and police reformed a Crime Stoppers Volunteer Area Committee in April 2013. The role of an Area Committee is to raise awareness of Crime Stoppers in their local community, the 1800 333 000 phone number and www.crimestoppersqld.com.au website, and to raise funds for the rewards paid to anonymous information providers. If you would like to become involved in this organisation as a volunteer, please contact Crime Stoppers Queensland on 1300 309 355 or go online to www.crimestoppersqld.com.au/volunteer and find out some more information.

Words from Andrea Crossan

“

I became involved in Crime Stoppers because I wanted to find out more about illegal drugs being offered and available to our children. I have three teenagers and was surprised to learn these new synthetic drugs can be bought on the internet and on the street quite readily. These drugs can come in the form of pills, powder, organic material or liquids and are packaged in a confectionery style packet featuring party scenes, colourful designs and catchy names.

“

Crime Stoppers is a community organisation that provides and promotes communication mediums for the general pubic to report information or suspicions of crime, anonymously if they wish.

It is important that everyone in our community is aware that every piece of information helps to solve crime and that Crime Stoppers guarantees anonymity for its information providers, thereby removing any fear of retaliation from reporting. Anonymous reports to the Crime Stoppers Queensland program since 1989 have led to over 26,000 offenders being arrested.

Rickilee

discovering the real me Many women will dream of achieving a desirable bikini body, but unfortunately for the majority, the desire begins and ends with that dream. There’s no magic genie who can grant us that wish and, as Rickilee Venardos explains, fitness is the result of determination, hard work and passion. The Emerald-based beauty wasn’t born with a beach-ready body and shared with Core Magazine how she overcame schoolyard taunts to become toned on the outside and tougher on the inside.

What does it take to develop a toned body like yours?

“My training and diet changes depending on whether I am close to a competition or not. Generally, I lift weights five days per week and I do cardio based training four to five times per week in my off season and six times per week as I lead up to a show.” “My diet is really simple! I eat six times per day and each meal contains protein heaps of vegies or salad. I have healthy fats, like avocado, with my eggs for breakfast and I eat carbohydrates before my weight training sessions, to fuel my workouts.”

How does your career with Aussie Supplements enhance your training?

“After eight years in the fitness industry I have gained a lot of experience in fitness and nutrition. Since learning about supplementation and using my own body for experimentation, I can honestly say I am in the best shape of my life.” “Every body is different and not everyone will need to take a multitude of supplements to reach their goals. I do believe there are a few key products that are essential. You have to love what you do. I love my job at Aussie Supplements in Emerald, so I’m the happiest I’ve ever been!”

Were you a natural-born athlete or was there a turning point that turned you toward fitness?

“In high school I was bullied a lot about my weight and the way I looked. While I wasn’t obese, I was definitely that chubby, frizzy haired, awkward girl. I was bullied pretty much my entire schooling life.” “I wasn’t living a fit lifestyle at all, until my last year of high school. My martial arts instructor took me under his wing and I trained every night after school. We would do crazy things like run up mountain ranges with car tyres, but the weight fell off and I became fit. I ended up competing well in sports carnivals and became an age group champion at high school. I was hooked and have remained fit and competitive ever since.”

Every body is different and not everyone will need to take a multitude of supplements to reach their goals...

How did you progress into modelling and body-building competitions?

“After I gained that competitive bug, I needed an outlet for my fitness and determination.” “My first fitness competition, I placed 1st in the INBA Tropix Bikini. That was a massive achievement for me because it was something I really worked hard for. It gave me confidence that I had found a sport I could do for the rest of my life. I’d finally found a place I fit in.” “I recently placed 5th at Fit and, while I didn’t win, it was a great achievement because I can truly say I was in the best shape of my life and I’ve never worked that hard for anything before.”

Other than modelling and competing, what’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done? “I think the scariest thing was walking out on the platform at the Grand Canyon in Las Vegas. It extends over the canyon and has a clear floor. It was terrifying looking down and seeing how high up I was!”

When you’re treating yourself to a food indulgence, what is your ultimate cheat meal?

To anyone trying to get fit and lose weight, what would your ultimate piece of advice be to them? “Diet is key. I can’t stress enough how important diet is in losing weight. You can walk on a treadmill or sit in a gym for as long as you want but if you don’t watch what goes on your plate for the rest of the day then you are not going to get anywhere near the results you are chasing.”

“Keep your diet simple, plain lean meats, fill up on vegies, drink plenty of water and eat frequently. Don’t starve yourself. People don’t believe me when I tell them how much I eat. Protein is so important to lose weight, so if you are a picky eater or can’t eat a lot of meat, then supplements are important for good results.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I’m passionate about body building and fitness modelling, so that industry is my focus. It’s a lifestyle I love and can see myself doing for many years to come. My current plans are preparing for Australia’s first Arnold Classic in March next year. It will be a massive show and I’m looking forward to my training and working towards bringing a better version of myself in the next 12 months.”

I love a good burger! Not one from a fast food restaurant but a homemade burger with sweet potato fries. For dessert, I can’t go past Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Tim Tams!

the future has arrived Polaris, as the world’s leading ATV and Side by Side off road manufacturer, has listened and spent the past two years developing what can only be described as the market leader in ATV safety. The Polaris ACE burst onto the market two months ago and has taken it by storm. This ATV has to be seen to appreciate the host of practical and functional safety features built in to enhance rider safety including; adjustable seat and steering wheel, seat belt, mesh doors and rollover protection bars. All this safety, coupled with an ATV that has a 650kg towing capacity is outstanding. Government agencies, Family Members safety and employers wanting to provide their staff with the safest ATV in the market can’t go past the ACE.

“ From the moment you enter this vehicle... It’s just brilliant “

POLARIS LEADS THE WAY WITH SAFETY A concern over the safety of All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) has resounded through the halls of Parliament, Government Departments and Farming bodies for many years now. Albeit rider training has a great deal to do with the safety, it is not the sole solution to the problem.

Ross from Central Bike Centre in Emerald recently had the opportunity of testing the new ACE at the Polaris Off Road Test Centre in Melbourne. “From the moment you enter this vehicle, adjust the seat (fore/aft), the steering wheel up or down and click that seatbelt on you feel safe and confident to tackle, the task ahead. The power is more than enough to satisfy most users’ demands as well as its ability to take on the hard four wheel drive tracks. It’s just brilliant”. Polaris have also developed a wide range of accessories to fit the ACE including a sun top roof, windshields, brush guards, body armour and much more to meet users’ specific requirements. This new ATV represents brilliant value for money with rider safety at the forefront. Feel free to drop into Central Bike Centre in Emerald for a test drive of their demonstrator ACE and they guarantee you will see the benefits.

Battle of

The battle is heating up as local bands from across the region gear up for The Lanes and River Sessions Battle of the Bands, in the Mackay City Centre, on Easter Sunday (April 20).

Some of the bands locked in to perform include Lloyd Saunders, Forgetting November, Viper Syndicate, La Mont and Modern Day Mayhem. A full list is available at festivalmackay.org.au.

The roof-top concert will take place on the Mackay Grande Suites car park and promises to rock the city, with up-and-coming local acts taking to the stage for a chance to perform at the region’s biggest festival, River Sessions on June 28.

The Battle of the Bands forms part of a feast of activities Mackay Regional Council has planned as part of The Lanes Easter Carnival, which also features a family-friendly street party from 10am, along Victoria and Wood streets, and an outdoor cinema screening of ‘Rise of the Guardians’, at the Civic Precinct.

Organiser of River Sessions and 4EVA Young Entertainment director, Adrian Young, said the line-up of the local talent set to perform was looking fantastic and of a high quality. “This competition is an incredible opportunity to really ignite a local act and get them some amazing exposure.” “The venue itself will be something to see, overlooking the city. The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed Sunday session and to enjoy great local music.”

The roof-top party kicks off at 12noon on Sunday, April 20, and will rock on until 9pm, with a licensed bar and food on offer.

She holds your hand from the moment you are born and holds the rest of you in her heart forever. She gave you the most precious gift that there is to give, life. The most precious gift you can give her in return is simply your loving company. Mother’s Day is celebrated across the globe in one form or another and has been since as far back as historians can account for. It goes by many names, and falls on different dates, but the expression of love and appreciation remains the same. Women have always been celebrated for their ability to give life. With celebrations usually occurring in spring, the time where the land itself was most fertile, ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks held festivals to honour the goddess who represented fertility and motherhood, with festivities and gifts extended to honour the goddess within all women. Mother’s Day, as we recognise it today, can be traced back to the United Kingdom in the seventeenth century. Many denominations of the Christian faith practiced Lent which was roughly forty days between Ash Wednesday

and Easter Sunday. During this time the faithful would fast or give up on many forms of luxury as penitence for their sins, in a time of prayer and forgiveness. Mothering Sunday was a special day, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, where the strict rules surrounding fasting and penance were put aside. Children who had left home and had become servants or were learning a trade were permitted to return home for a feast where the mother was the guest of honour. Children would bring their mother bunches of wild flowers, nuts or baking to show their love and respect. In a time when the mother rarely saw her children, it was one of the most special days of the year. Although the world has changed significantly since the seventeenth century, a mother’s love has remained unconditional. She still looks forward to when you walk through the door, and above all else, cherishes your love and happiness.

Our beautiful model, Dayna, came to our salon looking for a makeover for an informal engagement party she was attending and wanted to add a touch of glam. Dayna started with an all over natural brown so we decided an ombre look, to soften her face and highlight her features would best suit her. We also touched up her natural brown eliminating the copper tone. We toned her ends with an ash blonde to eliminate the undertones.

for the girls

MODEL Dayna > STYLIST Casey Kelland > MAKE UP ARTIST Casey Kelland

AFTER

With her eyes, I used a soft natural beige over the whole lid and, to darken them up, I used a black eyeliner and shaded it up into her eye socket area. We framed the eyes with black mascara.

To add a pop of colour, we did Dayna’s lips a soft pink shade.

Dayna has naturally curly hair and complained that she was not able to do anything with it, so to give her a completely different look, I blow dried her hair straight with a large round brush which gave her both body and volume. The foundation of the blow dry was assisted by using Keune Root Volumizer. We then created some large soft curls with the GHD Eclipse Styler, directing the front curls off the face. I finished off with Keune’s Brush Out Lacquer and before finishing her look I let her hair set while I applied her makeup.

Styling!

Dayna had previously had a spray tan so I used a Napoleon Base with a golden tone to compliment her bronzed skin. With her fair complexion I wanted to keep the tones in her cheeks and eyes very natural. For the cheeks I used a small amount of bronzer with a touch of shimmery pink to highlight.

With the make up complete and the hair set, I returned to finish the style. With a large paddle brush I brushed the entire head of curls. This may sound daunting but it gives an amazing celeb bounce. I finished the look by applying some some Keune Shine Serum to my fingertips and ran my fingers through her hair to piece it out. I then finished the total look off with Keune Brush out Lacquer for hold. This look is great with all types of hair, but especially with very fine hair such as Dayna’s as it gives the illusion of having thicker hair.

The reality of the majority of families living and working in the Bowen Basin is that one or sometimes both parents work in rostered employment. The standard 9am-5pm employment seems to be the exception rather than the rule in these parts. This means that modern families have had to adapt to the changing environment. When families separate, these rosters don’t change and the time that children spend with their parents can and often does work around a roster. The Family Law Act 1975 states that children have a right to have a meaningful relationship with both parents. To determine how this happens a number of factors need to be considered. In particular, arrangements need to be reasonably practicable in all circumstances. The concept of “rosters” was addressed in the Federal Magistrates Court (now the Federal Circuit Court) in the matter of Lees [2012] FMCA fam 1074. In this case, the father asked the court to take into account the reality of when he was able to spend time with the children, because of his roster, and sought a pattern of care that reflected his availability. The mother sought that the children live with her and spend alternate weekends with the father. The court considered that although a routine which revolved around the children’s school hours may be ideal, in this particular set of circumstances it would not result in the children spending time and having a meaningful relationship with the father. This decision highlights the court’s willingness to make orders that reflect the individual circumstances of each case. If you are separating and need advice about arrangements for your child/children, contact one of our experienced Family Lawyers today.

SUSTAINABILITY it’s child’s play! “Are you sitting down?” Those were the words that Kay Zimmermann from South Mackay Kindergarten remembers fondly, as she received a phone call from Core Life Magazine as the winner of a solar package, from Green Energy Technologies. “We were absolutely rapt to discover we had won. I called our Director straight away to pass on the exciting news. I still had butterflies of excitement in my tummy when I made the call,” Kay said. Environmental sustainability already played a pivotal role in the learning environment at South Mackay Kindy, with recycling, composting, maintaining a worm farm and chicken coop already part of the children’s learning experience. The kindergarten had previously installed solar panels but the panels hadn’t been operating to their full potential, and the kindergarten were still receiving power bills in excess of $700 quarterly. “James from Green Energy Technologies, came and looked at the system we already had in place and replaced our old solar panels with 10 new ones. He will come back in a month to see how well they have been performing. We are hoping our next electricity account will show a zero balance,” Kay said. With the money saved on future electricity accounts, South Mackay Kindergarten are hoping to be able to fund new projects of sustainability, such as a bush tucker garden, and a water tank. Green Energy Technologies directors, Kon Flaherty and James Webb, enjoy the opportunity to give back to organisations in need. “Where we can, we give back to the community with the gift of renewable energy. This support for not-for-profit organisations means we can help them in a bigger way than a cash donation, by providing them with long-term financial assistance. By dramatically reducing their energy costs for years to come, it will assist their cash flow long term,” they commented. With the gift that keeps on giving, Green Energy Technologies are helping to create a brighter, more sustainable future for our community.

I felt great throughout my pregnancy and I really believe Scott’s methods helped immensely...

Our miracle, Audrey

Giving birth is one of the most emotional gifts a couple can give to the world and while it can be a straightforward process for some, many others struggle to conceive. It can be an emotionally draining process, especially when it seems that hope is lost.

Scott continued acupuncture throughout the pregnancy, initially to lessen the risks of miscarriage and then to help Melissa’s body condition for the birth.

However, many couples are finding success through the use of alternative therapy, even after traditional medical options have been unsuccessful.

“I felt great throughout my pregnancy and I really believe Scott’s methods helped immensely with that. He was easy going, down to earth and didn’t baffle me with technical details. I always felt comfortable and, thanks to him, we now have a beautiful baby girl,” Melissa said.

Melissa and Michael Chambers knew from the outset that falling pregnant would be difficult. Melissa was diagnosed with PCOS, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, and had always had a very irregular menstrual cycle. After three years of trying, the couple visited an obstetrician and gynecologist and tried assisted fertility with the use of a fertility drug. Melissa developed hyperactive ovarian syndrome and fell ill. After eight months of injections, multiple scans and hefty medical bills, Melissa didn’t want to feel unwell anymore and went to her GP for advice. Her GP recommended Scott Martin from Australian Natural Fertility, as he had achieved excellent results with other couples in a similar situation to Melissa and Michael.

Melissa and Michael’s daughter Audrey is 16 months old and the couple take every opportunity to enjoy time spent with her. They will look at having another child in the future but, for the moment, are enjoying every moment with their miracle. “We will definitely head back to see Scott when we feel it’s time to begin trying again,” Melissa said. For more information contact Scott at Australian Natural Fertility on 07 4944 1279

“I didn’t know what to expect. I had never tried acupuncture before and I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical but I had reached the point that I was willing to try anything. “Scott was fantastic at understanding how I felt. I was at my last tether and had become depressed from the illness and no result so initially my acupuncture sessions were more about making me feel better and healthy again. “During the acupuncture I felt a tingling sensation and Scott assured me that this meant it was working. It was incredibly relaxing, and often I fell asleep, and waking up feeling incredibly refreshed. “When I was ready to try for a baby again, Scott changed the acupuncture and I also took Chinese herbal medicine. He used a cupping technique to draw toxins away from the body and it wasn’t long after that when we fell pregnant,” Melissa said.

TURN BACK

your beauty clock Over the last few years we have found that increasing numbers of people are coming into Allure to enquire about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or the Vampire Face Lift. So what exactly is this procedure? Essentially, it is the most natural injectable available to help stimulate new collagen growth in the face or anywhere on the body. Your own plasma which is yellow fluid from your blood, contains many types of skin, collagen other types of growth factors. When this is re-injected back under the skin it helps to reduce fine lines, improve tone and texture of the skin, dark circles, increase volume and helps give it that more youthful appearance. PRP has also been used very successfully to treat injuries that involve muscles, tendons and ligaments. The process of PRP is very simple. The procedure takes approximately half an hour. We begin by taking your blood, spinning this in a centrifuge and extracting the platelet rich plasma. This is then re-injected into the region being treated. I have found that it works very well all over the face, but is fantastic in those hard to treat areas that once were left alone. This includes the eyelids to reduce the fine lines and dark circles, the neck and décolletage to freshen up the skin, and the backs of hands. Used in conjunction with other treatments including anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, laser, optimised pulse light, cosmetic medicines and more PRP, can really help reduce the appearance of ageing and start turning back that clock.

Wouldn’t it be just great if we could come back and let you know we are finally at peace

We are so much more than just a physical entity

Well! I’m sure everyone would just love to know the answer to that, wouldn’t it be just great if we could come back and let you know we are finally at peace. I do however believe that there is life after death. This life can be a bit daunting at times and we are put to the test constantly. I believe that when we “pass on” it is to a place of peace and total comfort. No pain, no anxiety and best of all you get to see those loved ones that you lost while here on earth. TALK ON THE STREET

Everyone dies but no one is dead

Tibetans say...”Everyone dies but no one is dead”.

Heartbeat, circulation and breathing cease, but we are so much more than just a physical entity. It is only at the moment of death that the final revelations of our existence are written and sealed, and the non-tangible aspect to our life and body lives on. Death is the moment that our life story completes itself, a story that is left for those still living to enjoy. Hopefully we leave an idea, an inspiration or a legacy which means the world will never be the same again because YOU were in it.

I believe that when we die, our physical body ceases to exist but our spiritual body remains and continues to occupy its original space. In other words we are still here but on a different realm. So we no longer communicate verbally or be seen, but our energy can be felt. We are then given the opportunity to return as many times as we need, to finish our journey and reach enlightenment (or marry Chris Hemsworth... Same thing really!). our biggest challenge How our lives have changed in the past 18 months.

After being contestants on the Biggest Loser 2013 we weren’t prepared to slip back into our ordinary lives that got us onto the show, so we had to make some big choices, ones that were going to affect both our families. Jess & I lost nearly 70kg between us on the show and we didn’t want to pile it back on, we weren’t going to go through that pain and agony for nothing. So after some sole searching and discussions with our families we decided to help people who needed and wanted it, which in turn would keep us on the right path. There’s not too many trainers out there that have been overweight, unfit and unhealthy. So while some know how to be fit and some know how to be healthy and some know how to be fit and healthy not many of them know what it is like to be unfit and unhealthy.

So you’ve been turning up the heat in your training and you noticed a niggling ache in your knee... Or maybe you’re finding yourself dreading the thought of walking the length of the shopping centre, as you know how sore you’re feet are going to be by the end?

This is why Jess and I started R.E.D. Health & Fitness, to give the people who are afraid to go to a mainstream gym or to a PT that has never been overweight and doesn’t understand, a place to go to that has the right advice, understands, has heard and used all the excuses there are.

“Finding someone you can trust and who understands your goals is part of a successful patient- doctor relationship”, says Phil Marshman, owner and practice principle of Pioneer Podiatry. As a long-time resident of the Mackay area, with an interest in living a healthy lifestyle, Phil knows the rewards and challenges that come with pushing yourself in the pursuit of fitness.

Since opening R.E.D. Health & Fitness last October we have helped quite a few people in their quest to lose weight and become healthy, not just through training but through nutrition as well. We give our clients the advice they need not the advice they want to hear. We are about lifestyle change not belting you up in the gym, at boot camp or one on one. You need to be on the right path to being healthy before trying to get fit.

“This time of year I tend to see those people training for the numerous sports events on the local calendar, such as the Mackay Marina Run, as well as those participating in the sports leagues that start getting serious around this time. Once you start pushing yourself, your likelihood of injury is drastically increased. When you do, you need to make sure you’ve got the right team of health professionals you can trust to play their parts in getting you back on track.”

Having said that we do conduct regular boot camps, gym training and specialize in one on one sessions, we are not main stream PT’s, we are Health, Fitness and Lifestyle coaches.

Podiatrists are university trained from day one of their education to specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and leg injuries. However, the value of this specialisation is best seen when working within a medical and training team. “When I work alongside the many doctors and therapists in my network, we all understand our strengths and limitations. I might know all about how and why your foot is sore, but I’m also looking for cues that tell me you’ll need help from another therapist. It’s all about getting the right people on the job at the right time, for the best result.”

We also cater for junior members as well through our boxing club ‘The Northern Beaches Boxing Club’, we currently have over 40 members in the boxing club and we’re only getting bigger. Don’t panic though you don’t have to jump in the ring, you can just come along and train if that’s all you want to do. So if your 8 years or older and want to get fitter or stay fit come on in and see us. So to all those people out there that are sitting back wondering how they are going to lose that weight they’ve been carrying around for so many years, drop in and see us, we’ve got the solution.

The study of human movement and locomotion is a science called biomechanics, and this field of study is of particular interest to Phil Marshman. He has equipped his clinics with advanced equipment for high speed gait analysis and 3D optical foot scanners for orthotic design. When it comes to orthotic materials, Phil says the options are limitless. “I have patients often ask me, ‘Do you make hard orthotics or soft orthotics?’. For me, it always depends on what we are trying to achieve. Some people need a harder orthotic to fix their problem, and others will need softer ones. However, I will always make sure they are comfortable and are suitable for the kinds of footwear you like to wear. If you’re not happy, I’m not happy.” PHIL MARSHMAN B HTH SC (POD) MAPA Principle Podiatrist and Director

Forward planning is well advanced at Holy Spirit College to welcome our first classes of Year 7 students in 2015. We are committed to supporting parents and students to develop a sense of safety, security and connectedness (belonging) at HSC and to supporting and encouraging them to achieve high academic standards commensurate with abilities. JUMP IN... speak to the feet experts Growing bodies need the right support to prevent problems in the future. What are often dismissed as “growing pains” in the foot, ankle and legs are signs of real injury and that the feet may be in need of support.

the

funky burger restaurant Burgers, stand up and take a bow. The humble Aussie meal that you can eat with your hands is taking its moment in the spotlight, and we don’t mean the ones that you grab from a drive-thru window. Bakery fresh buns, real meat made from, whole cuts of beef and fresh salad. It’s a simple equation but, get it right, and it’s an addictive taste. Burger Me has discovered the formula to a great burger, and that’s to keep it simple. Fresh, quality ingredients made from scratch. Made with love. The funky burger restaurant made a splash at the Black’s Beach shopping centre, Turtle Shores, little over a year ago, but it quickly became a favourite with those who had discovered its fresh attitude to taste. It’s not like a traditional burger joint. There’s not a checkered square to be seen anywhere. The décor is as fresh as the sea breeze that blows outside. The bright pop of lime as zingy as its homemade sauces. With a selection of burgers and wraps on the menu, it’s hard to immediately choose a winner. They all look mouthwateringly delicious. The Black’s Beach burger is your classic Aussie burger. Australian beef patty, fresh salad, melted cheese, caramelised onion, pickled beetroot and homemade tomato sauce. Burger me, it tastes sensational! The chicken caesar is a burger Gaius Julius himself would have approved of. Succulent grilled chicken breast, tasty short cut bacon, a fried egg and a punch of tasty parmesan cheese with homemade caesar dressing. For a man, or a woman for that matter, who loves a good steak, the steak burger is a feed and a half. Wrap your laughing gear around prime rib fillet, short cut bacon, onion, egg, beetroot and melted cheese. Dare to be exotic and take a ride on the magic carpet. Ground lamb, caramelised onion, grilled halloumi cheese and pesto are the flavour stars of this magic burger. So delicious you’ll be rubbing your lamp in the hope your genie will bring you another. Some like it hot, and if that’s what you crave, ask for a hit of “death by chilli”, guaranteed to give bite to every mouthful. What’s a good burger without chips? Add a side of amazing hand cut potatoes or spicy sweet potatoes and you have yourself a meal-match made in heaven. The potatoes are peeled and cut on site, not frozen, and the difference is evident in the taste. To top off the perfect burger, treat yourself to a refreshment from the old-fashioned soda bar. The fruit smoothies are packed full of a passion-filled punch, while the Nutella thick-shake is a guilty pleasure that takes you back to your childhood. From ice cream spiders to traditional sundaes with chopped nuts, it really is the cherry on the top to a great lunch by the beach.

THE NORTHERN BEACHES FOR MANY YEARS HAS BEEN CONSIDERED THE GROWTH CORRIDOR OF MACKAY. WITH A LIMITED AVAILABILITY OF HIGH DRY FLAT LAND, MACKAY HAS TURNED TO THE NORTHERN BEACHES TO PROVIDE SECURITY AND A LIFESTYLE ALTERNATIVE TO TOWN LIFE. The region has the environment and services sought by many. That is why it has developed an unsurpassed choice of homes not offered in any other suburb in Mackay. It presents pleasing combinations of established dwellings, new estates, luxury architecturally designed homes and entrylevel homes. All this is set against the backdrop of seamless golden beaches and rugged shorelines that provide the backyard playground for its residents. To top that off, the region is well serviced by primary & high schools, childcare options and a medical super clinic. New shopping precincts offer as many choices as you would find in the Mackay centre, plus a few surprises. The Northern Beaches locality comprises of the suburbs of Rural View, Eimeo, Blacks Beach, Dolphin Heads, Bucasia and Shoal Point located only 15 mins drive north of Mackay City. Population projections indicate that approximately 34,000 people will be living in this part of the Mackay region by 2030. those who can, do. those who can, do more, VOLUNTEER. When it comes down to it, every human life is worth the same and every life is worth saving. Life is the most precious commodity known to man, so those with the ability to save it are naturally paid the highest regard, six figures made up of S.M.I.L.E.S. No one is a born lifesaver it is a learned skill and a precious one at that. The Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club may be the youngest surf life saving club in Queensland, but it has already turned many everyday people into community lifesavers, dedicated to making our tropical beaches a safer place to be. Despite being a young club, the establishment has a rich history, as it was previously known as Mackay Surf Life Saving Club from 1948 to 1960. It then operated as a catamaran club before officially becoming Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club in 2000. The club patrols Eimeo Beach on Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday during summer, with a full time lifeguard on patrol throughout the school holidays. With beautiful golden sand, crystal clear water and views toward the southern islands of the Whitsundays, the beach is popular with locals and visitors alike, who all benefit from the added safety of having a patrolled beach. All of its members are volunteers, with a family-friendly view toward encouraging membership from a young age. The Nippers train from 3pm until 5pm on Saturdays, from September through to March. The Under 6’s can be spotted wearing bright orange caps, while the Under 7’s wear green. The focus for these young lifesavers is to teach surf education and safety, with water activity restricted to shallow water. The U8-U14 year olds wear a blue cap with a dolphin logo and learn everything from beach sprints, flags and surf swimming to board paddling, lifesaving, CPR and water rescue techniques. Lifesaving is one of the few sports that combine humanitarian goals with elite competition, making it both fun, educational and great for health and fitness. The lifesaving cadets are aged from 14 to 19 years of age and are the future of the club. Due to their skills, strength and attributes, many of them will have assisted in water rescues and are a valuable part of both the lifesaving community as well as the local Northern Beaches community. The Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club couldn’t operate without the generous businesses who support their cause, or the volunteers who are dedicated to helping the community. The next time you see one of the members patrolling the beach, don’t forget to pay them a smile and say thanks for making the beach a safer place to swim. www.corelife.com.au 69

Save Your Skin “Out West”

With the stats showing us that 2 out of 3 people in Queensland will get skin cancer, between you and your partner, statistically one of you will get skin cancer! That is the average and it is worse as you go further north and west. This was reinforced by a recent trip performing skin cancer checks “out west” in the Queensland coal fields, 30% of the people seen either had an active skin cancer or pre-cancerous sun damage! The breakdown was 10% had skin cancers and 20% pre-cancers. Amazing stuff! SCARY FACT 1 - Just wearing a hat does not prevent sun damage. Look at the guys at work with hats on all the time that have been working out there for 20 years... Red, blotchy, scaly skin with lines from the sunnies and the V on the chest from the shirt. Reflected light is really dangerous. You really should be putting on sun block every day routinely after you clean your teeth and ideally topping it up at breaks. SCARY FACT 2 – Being inside a vehicle does not stop the UV. UV rays go through glass so drivers will usually have more skin cancers on their right arm and right side of their face. You have to wear sun block in the car and the dump trucks! NOT GREAT NEWS BUT TO CHEER YOU UP, HERE IS THE GREAT NEWS ABOUT SKIN CANCER: • Recognise them early and the treatment is easy • You can see skin cancer so check your partners skin monthly • Treat the damage early and prevent skin cancers • Reduce your risk by the simple protections (s,s,s,s,s) Doing monthly checks on your partner is effective to recognise early changes of a skin cancer and what you are looking for is a spot or blemish on the skin that is progressively changing each month or two. A skin cancer will progressively change, so that will be the give away that you need to see the doctor. Everyone after puberty should get annual skin checks for skin cancer as melanomas can occur at any age. Get the pre-cancerous scaly spots treated, with freezing, creams or photo-dynamic therapy, to not give them the chance to change into a skin cancer. They don’t need to be cut out but can be treated effectively, even if covering whole areas of your face, arms or legs. These treatments are also effective for some skin cancers, so cutting things out is not the only answer! We are striving to reduce the terrible statistics but that needs everyone to take part and making the changes to protect your skin and the skin of your children. May we see you in the streets and workplaces with beautiful, soft, smooth, unblemished skin and not on our operating tables!

Over the past two and a half decades, Robert O. Young has been widely recognized as one of the top research scientists in the world. Throughout his career, his research has been focused at the cellular level. Having a specialty in cellular nutrition, Dr. Young has devoted his life to researching the true causes of “disease,” subsequently developing “The New Biology™” to help people balance their life. He wrote “The pH Miracle”, which has sold more than 400,000 copies and has more than ½ million copies in print as of April, 2009. The pH Miracle books have been translated into 17 languages and are gaining a widespread following internationally. His research suggests that to keep disease at bay we need to keep our body alkaline. Sounds simple doesn’t it? The issue is that our world of supermarkets, take aways, medications and processed foods are all highly acidic.. so what does this mean for your health? “In a nut shell it means that you are more susceptible to yeast overgrowth, viruses, parasites, and other unhealthy cells to thriving. Every meal should contain no more than 20% acid-forming foods combined with 80% alkaline-forming foods. Stress, too, is acid forming. Add stress to an acid-forming diet and you wreak havoc on your body’s chemistry, creating waste products that only produce more acidity. Soon, your red blood cells can’t deliver oxygen and nutrients as efficiently to all your cells. Your body craves minerals and leaches them from other places in your body, even your teeth and your bones, leaving you at risk for osteoporosis. These minerals are vital for healthy adrenals and without them pulling for you each day, you will find that your energy levels drop. Low energy and mineral-deficient blood set the stage for systemic viral and fungal infections, like candida and herpes.” Donna Gates Body Ecology Diet For those of us a little more vain, red skin/face/nose, bloated and tight large belly’s and age more quickly. It can also affect weight not allowing your body to lose weight due to inflammation and bloating. Doesn’t sound good does it? So what can you do to reverse this and how do you know. To test your pH you can get pH strips from somewhere like a chemist. You pee on these and notice the colour as measured against the chart on the bottle. One important way to promote healthy alkaline blood (with a pH right around 7.35) is to eat a meal that has an abundance of alkaline-forming foods. When your blood is alkaline it will function at optimum efficiency, processing toxins and disposing of them properly, absorbing nutrients and providing life-giving oxygen and energy to hard working cells. The best forms of alkaline food are fermented vegetables, green vegetable juices, sea weed, fermented green powders such Super Vitality greens. And don’t forget the 80-20 Rule..

a picture speaks a thousand words “

Coming into Mackay Skin Clinic, I had previously tried numerous other treatments, be it via Doctors or TV infomercials, all of which were unsuccessful. They either irritated my skin further or caused mood swings. Being 21 years old, with my self-confidence deteriorating, I decided to finally do something about my skin. I had a consultation with Toula at Mackay Skin Clinic and the treatment began. After identifying the type of acne I had, Toula assigned certain treatments including facial treatments, extractions, the Herbal Active Peel and Dr Spiller Biomimetic Skin Products that would most benefit my acne. The state of my skin required a commitment from myself and the skin clinic team.

Toula Haas, Manager AFTER

Toula’s guidance shows she truly wants the best for me and her drive, desire and passion is emulated by the other staff, when they need to assist. A picture speaks a thousand words and after a year with Mackay Skin Clinic, my only regret was waiting so long. My face, which hurt whenever I touched it, is finally smoothing out and healing. My confidence is back and I know, as long as I stay committed, Mackay Skin Clinic will be there to help me every step of the way.

DRINK 20 CUPS OF GREEN TEA PER DAY?

DESIGN YOUR perfect BODY.

DO YOU HAVE EXCESS KILOS ON YOUR BUM, TUM, HIPS OR THIGHS YOU JUST CAN’T SHIFT? Do you diet or exercise but can’t seem to lose weight from your stubborn areas? Or perhaps you’re looking for a cellulite solution that really works? Then HYPOXI is for you. At HYPOXI, we tailor a workout program in one of our advanced machines. We add vacuum and compression while you exercise to help target fat in those areas which just won’t budge. The simple 30 minute workout is easy and completely natural. Every HYPOXI session supercharges your workout, so you get slimmer and smoother in those problem areas faster than regular exercise. We measure you along the way. After 12 sessions, you can lose up to 20 - 30cm’s from your trouble spots and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Thats a lot of tea... Most of us are aware that green gea is a healthy thing to drink. Its low in caffeine (about 27mg) and high in an antioxidants. We all know antioxidants are good, and the ones contained in green tea polyphenols and catechins include EGCG, resveratrol and others. What if I said drinking 20-40 cups of Green Tea per day will help you burn fat, improve your insulin resistance, fight the effects of aging, give you more energy and generally make you healtheir and more vital? You would grab the kettle and start drinking right? My guess is after about 5 cups you will be sick of green tea, going to the bathroom too often, and thinking its all too hard to be healthy. Every now and then a game changing product comes along that makes it so much easier to be healthy - GREEN TEA X50 is one of those. GreenTeaX50 is a great tasting instant green tea energy drink full of powerful antioxidants which may help stimulate metabolism, assist fat oxidation, and help burn calories by increasing energy expenditure and burning body fat thermogenically. GreenTeaX50 gives you more energy than energy drinks without the sugar, caffeine or gaurana

WHAT’S UNDER THE HOOD? Resveratrol - A super antioxidant found in the skin of berries, nuts

and red wine that fights the damaging effects of harmful free radical and helps to prevent insulin resistance . Each sachet also contains resveratrol.

EGCG - The most powerful antioxidant that is exclusive to green tea which is clinically proven to improve overall health and wellbeing, increase energy as well as promote weight loss by increasing energy expenditure.

Trace Minerals, Amino Acids & Electrolytes

Derived from sea water, Trace Minerals are essential for maintaining good balance of health. Trace minerals have a positive effect on immune system function, energy, metabolism and antioxidant protection. GreenTeaX50 is also made up of ingredients that contain naturally occurring amino acids & electrolytes to help rehydrate and replenish.

Heres the amazing thing:

A SINGLE SACHET contains the antioxidant and health benefits of up to 20 cups of regular green tea! And there is only the same caffeine as in ONE cup of green tea. Take once a day for good health and twice daily for the antioxidant, detoxing, thermogenic fat burning and weightloss benefits found in up to 40 cups of green tea. Each box contains 60 sachets which is approximately 1 month supply. Just mix a sachet with 600ml of icy cold water, shake and enjoy! You can also drink it hot, or make up cold jugs to sip through the day. My favourite flavour is natural (green tea flavour), but it also comes in Raspberry and Tropical.

Extended GBR fishing trips There is a lot of thought and planning that must go into an extended fishing trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. I could say I have done a few over the years and have learnt plenty of lessons along the way, which I can share with you. This information will hopefully help you enjoy a safe and successful fishing trip and is just from my experiences and certainly not always the rule. Of course the saying “practice makes perfect” or “ya can’t buy experience” and that is also true, but the more time you spend out there the more knowledge you will get of the most fantastic fishing location this country has to offer!

Preparation is the key. Firstly, I like to know how many days I am planning on staying out for and, most importantly what is the weather forecast looking like. It goes without saying that you plan on carrying enough fuel to get you through the trip plus 20%. If the weather comes up unexpectedly, you may be in for a very long trip home which could see you burn a lot more fuel than you originally anticipated. So it’s best to be mindful of that before you leave. Your vessel certainly needs to be suitable for the trip also. Extended trips I’m talking about two or more days so 4 blokes on a 16 footer is probably not the best scenario! The boat needs to have a good reliable VHF radio and good battery power also. Most reefs from the Whitsundays are still in VHF range of the mainland, or one of the Reef pontoons, if you did require emergency assistance. Good operational VHF should see you able to pick up to date weather forecasts. Logging on with the VMR is also a good idea. Your engine must be in good working order because it’s a long way home if something breaks down. Always make sure you tell someone where you’re going and expected return and if you have a plan “B” reef destination just incase.

Next, I also factor in what the tides are doing? Are we on the neap tides? Or are we building to big tides over the new moon or the full moon? As a charter operator, you have several factors to consider and the fishing one is not the first priority. Passenger comfort and safety takes priority so I plan my trip on heading to a reef area where I know, firstly, once I get there it is going to be reasonably comfortable and

conditions suitable for the fishing method requested? The reef system must have a suitable lagoon for an overnight anchorage, or at least another reef near by that you can get to in any time of the tide? This is a big one. You do need to plan well in advance on where you are planning on dropping the anchor at night for a safe over night stay. It’s always good to have a plan “b” just in case the weather comes up or fishing may take you to another reef system. Also be mind full of the tides during the night and what influence it may have on your overnight location. Some lagoons have more tidal influence then others and it pays to study them prior to anchoring at night. Big tides at night will see most lagoons exposed to some sea swell coming over the top of the reef. This will be the most rolling part of the overnight stay and it’s good to be aware of this. At the opposite end of the tide is when the lagoon will be at its calmest and is a great time to catch a few hours sleep between fishing sessions!

It’s not advised to move around inside a reef lagoon at night as most lagoons have scattered bommies and you certainly don’t want to run into any of them.

The only reason you really would be moving at night would be if your anchor has dragged and this is not a good feeling. Anchoring in a lagoon for the night is relatively easy as long as you follow a few basic rules. Firstly understand the area you plan on anchoring for the night. Is it completely scattered with bommies? Will I have enough swing room when the tide changes or if the wind changes direction? What happens if the wind glasses out. Will I drift up onto the reef? You need to factor in all these scenarios before

deploying the pick.

The biggest mistake I believe boaters can make is not having enough chain on the main anchor.

Not just any chain either. Have a decent size link so that you know when you deploy the pick it’s not going to move in the night. I run a small reef anchor with a small length of chain during the day around the reef. But when anchoring for the night, my main anchor has 15 mtrs of chain attached and this gives me plenty of weight to support the anchor when secure. Scope is the next thing. If I’m anchoring in 15 mtrs of water and we have a bit of breeze, I will pay out 15 mtrs of chain and 100 mtrs of rope. This gives good scope and very little pull on the anchor itself. As the boat pulls back with each wind gust the chain gently lifts up and down and the stretch in the rope also assists with keeping the boat reasonably stationary. Now every GPS unit has an anchor alarm. If you don’t know how to use it, you should learn! It could save you from the unexpected bump in the night! Fresh water is often overlooked on an extended trip and it’s alarming how quick you can go through it especially up here in summer. Dehydration is a big trap and comes on very quickly. I know from experience and it’s not fun. Slabs of bottled water are cheap these days and I take two for each day that I plan on going out. That calculates to around 5ltrs per person a day. Then I also have the boat fresh water tanks as a back up. The next thing is ice. I guess there comes a point were you can be carrying a lot of extra weight but, for me, it’s the more ice the better.

the best way to maintain the best quality product is to have you fish iced as soon as possible after capture. Fish looked after this way will last a long time, taste great and minimize any chance of spoilt fish or food poising! Now I hear you say what about the beer? Well of course you need ice for amber fluid or there would be a mutiny!

Now what about the fishing? We really are so blessed here on the GBR. We have so many species of fish to target with so many styles to target them with! I’m a nut and carry all styles of gear for any opportunity but even then I leave some gear at home because ya simply cannot cover everything! Maybe it’s GT’s on poppers? Mackerel off the troll? Or the reefies off the bottom? You have to take gear to cover it all. Every now and then you may get a trip where you want to target a specific species so it does you good to leave some “other gear” at home so you can’t be distracted by another possible opportunity. It can keep you more focused on the select challenge ahead. Best of all is absorb the experience. The GBR really is such a special place and it still wows me even though, luckily, I can call it my office :-)

An active car enthusiast, Bob Calcutt has only been selling cars for four years. However, having owned well over 63 vehicles himself, he’s not short on product knowledge.

introducing

BOB CALCUTT Mackay Land Rover

Bob started his working career off as an apprentice carpenter, working through his apprenticeship and staying with the trade for 12 years until a fall resulted in a recommendation to use his brain and not his hands for future work. This resulted in Bob moving to Mackay and going into real estate. After this move he helped put an extension on his brother’s home and meet his wife Toni, a local from Sarina. He sold her a home and the rest is history. Bob and Toni have six children and seven grandchildren and this, along with purchasing a local real estate business in 1992, has kept them busy over the years. Of course, everything hasn’t been work and no play. Bob also raced jetskis for six years and was Mortem Bay champion for two years. He and a mate have also managed to outrun a few large sharks for 6 hours on what was supposed to be a relaxing outing. Bob furthered his interest in cars and raced a speed car in Mackay for two years. Bob has also been serenaded by Marilyn Monroe! She sat on his lap and sang “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” for 30 minutes. But for now, Bob is happy to take it easy in his spare time and enjoy his new journey selling Land Rover. He’s coming to Mackay Land Rover, bringing previous experience from the luxury car market, and is ready to work with you to build your dream car. So come and say hello, go for a test drive and you will be impressed with the full range. Present this article and receive Window Tint when you purchase a new Land Rover from Mackay Land Rover.
