While Australian Hip Hop continues to break new ground, there is only one act synonymous with the term ‘groundbreaking’. Within a genre that is growing at an exponential rate, Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods will always remain leaders. CORE Magazine caught up with MC Suffa for a chat… You’ve been labelled the Q leaders of the Hip Hop genre, how does that feel? Umm I don’t know, alright A I guess. As long as there’s no responsibilities or paperworlk, that’s cool [laughs]. There’s so many artists around that are deserving of that title, so it’s really nice to be considered among them. With your previous album, Q ‘State of the Arts’ being so freakin’ popular, were you worried how the new album ‘Drinking from the Sun’ would be received? I guess you say that you A don’t, but you do worry about that kind of thing. We were just worried about how it would be received musically, but we’ve been really lucky so far. Your first single from Q ‘Drinking From the Sun’, ‘I Love It ft. Sia’ is a big hit – how was it working with Sia on this track?
10 • www.coremag.com.au
We knew Sia growing up. We A used to see her play in a jazz band called Crisp. She recorded her side in LA. We’re all massive fans – working with her was a pleasure. She’s super easy going and just a quirky person. Towards the end of your Q latest album, it hints that you were working on two albums from the start. Is there truth behind this? We’re definitely releasing A another album a lot sooner than it took us to release this album. That’s all I can give you! [laughs] You have an impressive Q track record with hit singles, do you have a favourite among your own songs? ‘Chase The Feeling’ would A have to be my favourite, I don’t know why, but I guess it was a good time in my life, not that now is a bad time [laughs].
Q
How does your new album differ from your older stuff?
Hopefully it’s more mature! A [laughs] I don’t drink or anything anymore, so there’s no more party anthems. I’ve been told it’s a darker sound, which I guess is true – less of a party vibe and more serious. You’ve recently supported Q Eminem on his sold out Australian Tour – what was Slim Shady like to tour with? Well we didn’t even see A him. He would rock up 5 minutes before the show started and go straight on stage. Then after the show finished, he got straight in the car and left. I would’ve hounded him for sure though! [laughs] You are obviously Q a festival favourite, what attracts you guys to Festivals? When we’re a live act, A we’re essentially a party band, so festivals are perfect for
us. Its pretty much one big party with wasted people everywhere.
Q
How did you enjoy River Sessions in Mackay? How did you find the crowd?
Yeah we had a brilliant time! A Rowdy! Mackay peoplein particular know how to get loose and have a good time! Did you get a chance to Q explore the region while you were here? Last time I was here I went A swimming on a beach and had it to myself. I was thinking ‘Why do I have this beautiful, pristine beach all to myself?’ It wasn’t until after I got out of the water that someone told me that I was swimming in shark-infested waters!
Q
Any chance you’ll be back after River Sessions?
I don’t know our plans that A intimately! Hopefully we’ll be calling in again in the near future!

A polished, golden yellow beer with 5% alcohol. Phoenix beer is pasteurised after bottling, according to natural conservation methods.
Luxurious and at the same time with a hint of decadence, this Stout has it all, delivering a satisfying, indulgent taste without ever becoming overly sweet.
The quality of the underground water also allows us to produce a beer with no chemical additives. Time of maturation before distribution is meticulously controlled. A clean and refreshing crisp style pale lager.
Pale Ale and Crystal malt, Chocolate Malt, a special blend of sugars, Fuggle and Golding hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence are combined to deliver a stout with real credentials.
Brothers Tutti Frutti is a combination of all of our other flavours. A fruit explosion of pear, strawberry, lemon, blackberries and passion fruit.
In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public.
Six fruits using your tongue as a bouncy castle.
It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this, the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Find fine dining at Cape Gloucester Resort Bar and Bistro Follow your nose down the bitumen to Cape Gloucester Resort Bar and ‘The Oar’ restaurant at Hydeaway Bay north of Airlie Beach. You’ll find delectable cuisine with an ocean-front view. Without windows or screens on their open-plan wooden deck, the view of Passage Island, Middle Island and Gloucester Island is unobstructed, which makes for quite a dining experience. Stop by ‘The Oar’ restaurant for their gourmet lunch. Enjoy comfort food like their beef and Guinness pie with Coffin Bay oysters, Szechwan salt and pepper calamari or beer-battered fish. Vegetarian meals feature on the lunch menu, such as the deconstructed pumpkin salad with boccocini, fresh rocket, balsamic reduction and generous splash of olive oil. For a memorable evening out, book dinner at ‘The Oar.’ “We’re about relaxed, al fresco, family-friendly dining,” said head chef Cal Patience, who has catered for the likes of ET from ‘Escape with ET’ as well as Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. The crown jewel of ‘The Oar’ menu is the seafood platter which includes green curry roasted bugs, champagne and caviar oysters, sashimi of yellow fin tuna served with wakami, Bowen mango and avocado crusted scallops, chilli lime and sesame king prawns, fresh king prawns, cooked oysters, local barramundi, local reef fish, white wine & garden herb steamed mussels, black lip clams & soft shell crab.
“My speciality is in seafood,” said Cal. “I like to think it’s the best seafood platter on the east coast.” He recommends white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay to top it off. “We try to source everything if possible from local providers,” said Cal. “Lots of the fish comes out of Bowen or Shute Harbour and most of the Barramundi comes from Conway.” The menu at ‘The Oar’ changes every three to four months, keeping in mind the local favourites. “Coming up on the winter menu we have some beautiful Tasmanian lamb shanks and racks as well as amazing Kimberly red beef rump, eye and rib fillets that we do with a green peppercorn crust topped with a mushroom and Jack Daniels sauce.” said Cal. Indulge on the weekends with the daily cocktail special or the four beers on tap plus many more different beers available at the Cape Gloucester open-plan bar. They boast an extensive wine list as well. “We have a heap of new wines that people may not be familiar with.” said Cal. Looking to treat the special lady in your life? Take her to ‘The Oar’ for a full breakfast, offered every Sunday. She can indulge in crepes, eggs Benedict, French toast and more. There’s also the big breakfast for the guys. If it’s corporate or event catering you’re after, Cape Gloucester has got
you covered. “We have over 38 weddings booked for this year,” said Cal. “Weddings are one of our specialities. We work with the bride and groom to design the menu to include exactly what they would like.” Don’t miss out on this hidden haven; Cal, Julie and team at Cape Gloucester have the art of hospitality down pat. Beauty from Walkerston shines worldwide. Recently appearing in the video for ‘I Love it’ by Hilltop Hoods featuring Sia, fashion model SARAH TODD has made quite the name for herself. She’s been the face of Pantene, Gucci and Seafolly, to name a few of the famous brands Sarah has represented in Australia and around the world. In all her travels, Sarah stays true to her roots. In 2011 Sarah starred in the Tourism Australia campaign aimed at bringing tourists back to Queensland after a stormy summer. When she’s not modelling, Sarah works as make-up artist and hair stylist. To top it all off, Sarah is a loving mum to her one-year-old son Phoenix. CORE caught up with Sarah on battling leeches, seeing Robin Williams do a spontaneous stand-up routine, and buying her Pop beers at Wests’ League Club.
Q
How did your modelling career begin?
When I was 18, I was given A tickets to an Escada fashion show in Sydney. One of the magazine editors approached me in the audience and suggested I should be a model and recommended an agency. The following day I went into the agency and was offered a contract on the spot. I moved to Sydney three months later.
Q
Which designers have you worked with?
I’ve been modelling for seven A years now, so that list is quite long but the memorable ones would have to be Gucci, Nicola Finetti, Marni Skillings, Seafolly, Jets and Pantene.
Q
Which shows have you most recently appeared in?
The most recent jobs for me A would be starring in the Hilltop Hoods recent film clip for ‘I love it’ featuring Sia and a television commercial for Pantene. I have to say that being the ‘Pantene Girl’ has been one of my goals since I began modelling, as
24 • www.coremag.com.au
I do have torturously (or to some, amazingly) thick hair.
Q
What challenges have you faced as a model?
One shoot in particular A lasted 16 hours straight. I battled leeches in a national park and was bitten by a spider, but it was worth it knowing I would be in ‘I love it’ video. Another would be shooting winter fashions in summer and vice versa. One shoot was done in the very early hours of the morning to get that perfect moment of a beautiful sunrise for the backdrop. It was so freezing it was almost impossible to stop myself from shaking. The photographer told me that when he was retouching and zoomed right in on my face he could see all of the tiny hairs on my face standing on end!
Q
Over your seven years of modelling, have you had any celebrity encounters?
One of my favourite A nightspots in Sydney is the comedy show at the Sugar Mill in Kings Cross. You can get dinner
and a show for $15 and sit at a table right in front of the stage with an intimate crowd of about 50 or so. One particular night Robin Williams popped up mid-show doing one of his first stand-up comedy routines in Australia. He was here recording the voice for Happy Feet 2. On the work front, I’ve worked with Trinny and Susannah, Tina Arena, Esther Anderson and Asher Keddie; fun, fun fun.
Q
When you’re not in front of the camera, how do you spend your time?
For the past year, the A majority of my time has been spent raising my ridiculously cute baby boy, Phoenix, who lights up my every minute with his cheeky little grins. He is full of so much happiness and energy. I never thought it was humanly possible to love something as much as I love him. I’m fitting into the mum role really well, baking and cooking more than I ever have before for my partner Devinder, Phoenix and myself. Throughout my modelling career I have also been working on my beauty skills assisting top make-up artist Rae Morris and studying, as I hope to move into becoming a full-time professional makeup artist once I’m done with modelling. I’m also a blogger. During my pregnancy I felt I needed a creative outlet aside from the pregnancy modelling, so I joined the social media bandwagon and created my own makeup and fashion focused blog. It’s becoming more and more of a passion for me, enabling me to share insider tips from my years of working with top makeup artists, designers and stylists. You’ll have to check it out: www.sarahpatricia. com.au. I love it because it is something I can continue no matter where I am and pick it up whenever I have the time.
Q
Your blog looks awesome, Sarah! Tell us about growing up in the Mackay region.
I was brought up in A Walkerston, just outside of Mackay. We had such a close family, not just emotionally but literally too. My Aunty who was like a second mum and my cousin lived about a five minute walk away and my Nan and Pop five doors from them. My best friend was also a five minute walk away. Along with my beautiful Mum and brothers, I had a very happy upbringing, playing almost every sport known, wanting to be like my brothers and in turn becoming slightly tomboyish. Sounds like a wonderful Q childhood! When you visit home, where are the places you’re sure to visit and the things you’re sure to do? I phone ahead of time and A book my Nan in with me to have her nails done and bring home the on-trend colour of the moment. I’m not sure how the pastel blue that’s in at the moment will go down with her, but I’m sure she’ll give it a go. She’s pretty cool like that. We have the best roast dinner of all time at my Aunty Cheryl’s, crackle and all, and Mum makes me a caramel tart. I do some ‘tough lapping’ out to the beautiful marina at the harbour and eat a crab sandwich. A coffee every morning at the best coffee shop in Mackay ‘Traffic’ is a must. I get my nails done by Mel at Natural Body and Beauty and go for a naughty tan out at the harbour. I have a night out with friends to all four clubs. Finally the whole family gets together for dinner at West’s Leagues Club and I buy my Pop a beer.

In past articles I’ve mentioned the different areas of the Lake that I fish at varying times of the year. This month I thought I would talk more about the tackle and rigs used to fish in the Lakes for the big Barra. These days everything is available purpose built for particular styles of fishing. Sure you can still get general purpose type rods and reels but once you start using a combo set up for a particular fishing style you soon appreciate how much easier they are to use and how much more effective they can be. This goes for boats as well. There are a lot of boats around these days that are set up with the lure fisherman in mind. For example, casting decks fore and aft are very handy and are often standard on a lot of the tinnies these days. I have a Nitro Z7, which is an American Bass boat and it is fantastic to use on the lake. These boats are built specifically for this style of fishing. It has a shallow deadrise and a wide beam, which makes it very stable and easy to walk around. With the raised decks it also allows for a lot more storage and keeps the decks clear, again making moving around the boat easier. Probably the most important addition on the boat is the electric motor. These are a must if you are going to get lure casting whether it is in the salt or on the Lakes. Having the constant quiet motor to hold you on snags or maintaining a slow drift over the shallows is very important. The impoundment Barra can be painfully slow to react to lures sometimes
26 • www.coremag.com.au
and it may take a number of casts into a snag from different angles to get the bite and in situations like these the electric motor makes life a lot easier. Not to mention how much easier it is to chase a hooked Barra through and around the submerged trees with an electric. The newer models around now like the Minn Kota I-Pilot I use have the additional features of the GPS, which can hold you on one spot or move you along a saved track. An electric motor to a lure fisherman is like a mig welder to a boilermaker, I don’t know how we got by without them. I have already touched on the Sounder in the past. In my opinion, it’s not as important as the electric motor, but they can make life a lot easier whether it’s locating fish or showing the depth when trolling or just showing the water temp. All these things certainly help catch more fish. I use a Humminbird 998 unit, which has the Side Imaging feature. The pictures you can get out of these things are unbelievable and in most cases it shows me if there are any fish in the area whether holding in snags or swimming past. It doesn’t make them eat but certainly gives you the confidence to stay longer in an area and work it till they bite, where as in the past I would have driven away thinking they just weren’t there.
Barramundi are thought to live to around 20 years of age.
I have spoken how the fish hold in the main basin in summer. Being able to cover a couple of hundred feet each way is a distinct advantage when you’re out in the open and the fish aren’t holding to any particular structure. The majority of the rods and reel combos for this kind of fishing are 6-12kg baitcaster or spin outfits. Personally I use predominantly baitcast, but there has been a big swing back to spin gear over the last couple of years. I think this is because we do a lot of casting in shallows and open points where distance and covering more ground is more important than accuracy. Long casts and working very quietly is important when fishing skinny water. Spin reels have toughened up a lot also and in a lot of ways, need less maintenance than the baitcasters. Fighting big fish on spin gear especially in a prolonged fight the spin rods are more comfortable as they don’t twist in the hand like the baitcaster or overhead. Whether it’s spin or baitcaster though it’s good to have a nice balanced combo, as you will be able to cast for much longer before your arms and hands start aching. Braid line is also a must for lure fishing. With the lack of stretch and fine diameters, lures work a lot better and you get a lot more feel through the rod. There are quite a few different leader materials and styles around these days. I use 80lb mono leader and lately have been using wind on leaders. I’ve used a lot of different brands but find the Jack Erskine leaders are tied the best and don’t show signs of wear even after a lot of casting. A lot of people are using Fluro Carbon leader but I find it doesn’t suit my knots so I stick to mono. I could get into the lure choice thing but everyone has his or her own favourites and I could go on for hours. I think it’s important though to have a selection of hard bodies, deep and shallow in different sizes and soft plastic and surface lures. Just remember to upgrade the hooks and split rings if necessary.
This Barracuda was caught at Repulse on bait [squid and pilly] on a handline by JACK BARRY, 11 years of age, ‘absolutely amazing fighting predators’ we were pulling up only halves of fish until we hooked the beast.
May 18th to 20th saw the 2nd round of the Motorworks MVD Racewear QLD SuperMoto titles come to the Whitsunday Motorsports track in Proserpine, so CORE took the chance to catch up with the current Australia Champion, Beau Laing. The 24 year old from Caloundra, sponsored by Motorworks, rides a supermoto converted TM450. Beau has been racing motorbikes for 15 years, originally motorcross before making the jump to Supermoto a couple of years ago, and has never looked back. Now for those of you that don’t know what supermoto is here is a quick rundown. Supermoto – A form of motorcycle racing who’s track alternates between 3 different types – flat track, motorcross and road racing. Most courses have a 50% to 75% road section, with the remainder being off road, and include the usual jumps, berms and other obstacles seen on motorcross tracks. The bikes are generally dirtbikes with road tyres as the road section of the course is the longest. Now enough of that, here is how the interview went down just as Beau was getting ready to fly out to Europe (but more on that later)… Alright Beau, let’s jump Q right in, how did you get into Supermoto? A friend took me along A actually. I used to race motorcross for years, but after a friend was killed in a bad crash my head was shaken and I couldn’t get back in it. So when a friend dragged me along to a supermoto race, I gave it a go and the staggered field start let me ease my nerves of racing again. Since then I’ve been able to race motorcross again, but I just love supermoto. What would you say has Q been the high of your racing career so far? 28 • www.coremag.com.au
Well that has to be my first A ever supermoto race to tell the truth. Basically when my friend dragged me along, it was to a practise day. After doing well at the practise, they told me I really should get a bike together and come race the last round of the Australian titles in Perth, which was two weeks away. So we quickly converted the 250cc motorcross bike I had been using and headed to Perth. I ended up winning every race. I was stoked.
Q
Have you had any major injuries you can tell us about?
A
How long do you have, and how much paper? (laughs)
Ok point taken, how about Q just some the worst then? I tore my AC joint in the A shoulder, and it’s now held together with a rubber band and some screws. I’ve got a plate in my ankle with 7 screws holding it together.
Q
Wow you’re going to have fun at the airport security.
No it’s all titanium so it A doesn’t set it off. I’ve torn the ACL and PCL in my knee and shattered the top of my tibia.
Damaged my hips pretty bad, and I’ve dislocated both my shoulders twice. But that’s just how it goes racing for 15 years. Now I was going to ask Q about what sort of fitness training you do to keep in shape for competition but you’re a fitness instructor for your day job? Yeah we own a gym down A here in Caloundra, so I train twice a day, except for weekends.
Q
A
Twice a day? Yeah one strength and one cardio. The strength is
CASH DRUGS & CASH DRUGS & CASH DRUGS & CASH DRUGS & CASH DRUGS & CASH
usually about an hour and 20 minutes, and the cardio is about 45 minutes to an hour.
Q
What about training on the bike?
A
Every chance I get. (laughs)
Q
So I’d take it you ride daily?
No not as much as people A might think. It’s hard to get out and find the time obviously, and getting access to the tracks is sometimes difficult. So I generally just convert the 250cc back to a motorcross setup and ride that every weekend. I do a lot of dirt practise mainly. Now you recently raced Q at the Whitsunday Motorsports Track up here in Proserpine, and came in 2nd overall? Yeah I had a bit of a crappy A weekend, I was leading by 35 points I think, heading into competition on Sunday, and ended up crashing Sunday morning, bent the bike up a fair bit and threw the nerves a little. I think I was just trying to be too careful before heading off to Europe etc. but that’s just racing.
Q
Do you have a favourite track to compete at?
I think I would have to say A Collie over in WA. They got the miners involved and covered the dirt section with about $100,000 worth of crusher dust, which just made it a dream to race on. Now you are, as we speak, Q getting ready to fly out to the Netherlands to compete in a round of the Dutch Supermoto Championship in Valkenswaard.
Yeah I’m pumped, very A excited. It’s been a mad dash organising everything, and it’s the first time leaving the business etc. so it’s been busy.
Q
A
Is your first time competing overseas? Yeah unless you’d count Philip Island? (laughs)
Being the current Q Australian Champion do you get recognised, and I was going to ask if it helps with the ladies, but I believe you’re happily married is that correct? (sorry ladies) Yes I am happily married, A but as for being recognised, it depends. In the motorbike world yeah sometimes, but it’s not like I go to the pub or anywhere and have everyone know who I am. Except for at my gym that is. (laughs)
Q
What can we expect from you next Beau?
Well hopefully some good A results in Europe would be nice, we are also heading to New Zealand to compete in the Supermoto race of Wanganui which is a street circuit race and basically New Zealand’s version of Isle of Man so that should be fun, and my sponsor Motorworks are talking about some events in China too, so that will be something to keep an eye out for.
Yeah we own a gym down here in Caloundra, so I train twice a day, except weekends.
Well thanks for talking to Q us Beau, and best of luck in the Netherlands, and hopefully we can catch up again soon to see how it all went. A
Yeah thanks that sounds good guys.

Meet Lara Louise Mitton, an incredible 20-year-old horse lover turned model from Airlie Beach, with the world at her feet. I caught up with Lara to find out how she remains grounded in the world of fashion, modelling and horse poo!
36 • www.coremag.com.au
Born and bred in Airlie Beach, Lara, the youngest of three, found her passion for horses at an early age. This passion stayed with her throughout her school years and is still what she escapes to, when needing time out from her busy life. Lara boarded at Townsville Grammar during high school, and would commute 4 hours by bus between Townsville and Airlie Beach so she could ride her horse Cruize every weekend. “Leaving home and attending boarding school was where I found my independence.” Lara said. Although still at a young age, this independence saw her relocate to the country town of Warwick, where she attended an agricultural school. “I decided to move to Warwick because it enabled me to finish my education and ride. I could even ride my horse as one of my subjects! This was one class I would never skip.” she said laughing. “It wasn’t long before Cruize was expelled from school and I bought a new horse, Bandit.” This winning combination went on to become 2nd in Australia at the QISEA National Finals for dressage, even though Lara’s focus and passion was in show jumping. After spending just a few hours with Lara on shoot for this article, I knew that there was so much more to her than just a pretty face. Having the privilege of working with models everyday in the world of CORE, I was taken back by Lara’s maturity, well beyond her years and my expectations. This Delta Goodrem look-alike, lit up the camera when she smiled and what was captivating about her, was that her inner beauty was Issue 11 • 2012 • 37
as equally impressive as her outer beauty. It’s no surprise to hear that she is in hot demand for modelling work, both locally and nationally. Lara was selected to compete at the Miss Universe Australia preliminaries, where she made it through to the Queensland State Finals. “I have also been selected in The Miss World Pageant. I have made it through to State Finals and into the semi finals. I have my fingers and toes crossed that I will progress further to the national finals.” Lara said.
“I am someone who is in love with life! I love the outdoors, different experiences and adventures. I have recently got the taste for travelling and this is something I will surely do more of. If I am fortunate enough to succeed in my modelling career and combine this with my zest for life and adventure, then I would be well on my way to being content. However it will not ever be something I would measure my whole happiness on.” Lara said. Airlie Beach will always be home to Lara and Bandit will remain the most important man in her life for the time being. While her current adventure is still unfolding, Lara will continue to work hard and simply enjoy the process. Good luck Lara!

DDITION OUR NEW A ET TO THE FLE
Celebrating its 10th edition, QME returns to Mackay in July 2012. Originated in 1993, Reed Exhibitions identified a need for a high quality mining exhibition in what was becoming a rapidly growing resources region in Central Queensland. As the key hub for the mining sector in the region, Mackay was chosen as the ideal location for the expo, and for the past 20 years has proven to be a phenomenally successful exhibition for Mackay and Central Queensland, the industry and Reed Mining Events. It is an opportunity for visitors to source the latest products and services aimed at assisting their companies in boosting productivity and efficiency, improving safety and reducing costs. QME is also a great networking event and a chance to catch up with colleagues, peers and friends in a trade-only, industry-specific event. This year, there is a strong focus on further engaging with the “mining community”, encouraging everyone involved in the mining industry, at all levels, to come along to the exhibition. It includes a program aimed at “frontline” miners (operators, supervisors, foremen, leading hands, maintenance personnel, etc), recruitment and careers, men’s health sessions, a Women in Mining Day, and advice and support sessions for DIDO/FIFO miners and their families. These elements all include free seminars and information sessions held within the exhibition. It provides an unparalleled opportunity every two years for the Queensland mining industry to source the products and services that keep their mines and projects state-of-the-art, operating at maximum capacity, and with a high degree of safety.
40 • www.coremag.com.au
QME 2012 will feature a wide range of exhibitors, from major suppliers such as Caterpillar, Atlas Copco, Sandvik and others, to small national and local suppliers who see QME as the perfect opportunity to meet face to face with key decision makers in the mining industry. The event will also include the QME Mining Industry Conference, a twoday conference at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre on July 24-25. On July 26, the Mackay Area Industry Network (MAIN) will hold a one-day safety conference. There will also be a number of onsite free seminars, presentations and information sessions aimed at all facets of the mining community.
Queensland is no doubt one of the most thriving states in our Country, pumping more than $25 billion dollars into the economy last year enjoying a 13% rise over the previous year showing the dust has not settled yet. With bauxite, copper, gold, lead, zinc, tin, phosphate, coal, oil, natural gas, coal seam gas, and LPG gas being 12 of the most produced resources in Queensland, we are actually the largest coal exporting state in the country, and the largest coal exporting country in the world. With Mackay and surrounding areas being the leaders of the coal producers, it puts regional Queensland on the map for significant economic contribution on a national scale. The current plans for Queensland Mining see a profit growth over the next 20 years, with the state government investing in further exploration and extending resource provinces, like the recent milestone of the new Galilee mining province and have predicted in last year’s budget the Queensland economic growth will only further accelerate. Newly elected Mayor, Deirdre Comerford said the region needed to take advantage of the opportunities that growth and the current mining boom represents.
We need to manage the challenges associated with growth but look to embrace the benefits. Deirdre said. Mayor Comerford said strong leadership and a “vision for the future” remained her key priorities to ensure Mackay retained its identity and continued to capitalise on the buoyant economy.
Of course our future so far seems to shimmer gold with the promise of further growth and influx of mineral discovery around the region. This of course creates the uncontrolled wave of population increase with thousands of Australians rushing to Mackay and surrounding areas hoping to partake in a piece our coal enriched pie. As of 30 June 2011, Mackay’s government area was recorded at 121,072 persons, a growth of 2.1% over the year. According to the Office of Economic and Statistical Research, “by 2016 the expected population of Mackay Regional Council will be between 134,336 and 142,715 persons. By 2031 this is expected to change to between 168,236 and 203,302 persons.” With our mining, farming and tourism pulling so many numbers to our area, Mackay will be needing to buckle up and prepare for further needed infrastructure challenges being amongst a few hurdles to be tackled by our local governments. “Our infrastructure, housing and skills shortage are certainly issues that need addressing, but there is no silver bullet,” Deirdre said. “We have a thriving, vibrant economy but need to be
With our region’s population pulling these kind of numbers, it seems the days of our sleepy tropical towns will now be lost once and for all, making way for the inevitable further boom coming in from all directions which has, and will continue, to turn Queensland into what will possibly be the most populated state in our country. 42 • www.coremag.com.au

mindful that not everyone is sharing in the mining wealth.”
With mining’s long arm stretching all across Queensland, local governments such as Whitsunday and Issac are also feeling the growth, with the Whitsundays receiving a 1.1% growth at 35,063 with a population projection of up to 60,428 by 2031. Issac copped a 1.6% growth with a projected population of up to 42,832 by 2031, almost doubling its current population of 22,956.
There is huge potential for growth in the Whitsunday region with a high likelihood of greater job prospects and new people settling in the area, Mayor Whitney said. “With this much anticipated development, particularly in the Abbot Point and State Development Area, there is also a need for major expansion of infrastructure to embrace these projects. Although the costs to deliver this infrastructure will be significant, the benefits that the expansion will bring to the region will far outweigh these costs.” she said. “We are fortunate to be able to boast an assortment of industries including tourism, mining, agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, grazing, manufacturing, construction and retail. As the Mayor of the Whitsunday region, my focus will be on strengthening and supporting the diverse range of industries that sustain our local economy and our communities.” she said. “There are exciting times ahead for the Whitsundays and I am ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead for the benefit of our communities.” With our regions population pulling these kind of numbers, it seems the days of our sleepy tropical towns will now be lost once and for all, making way for the inevitable further boom coming in from all directions which has and will continue to turn Queensland into what possibly will be the most populated state in our country. Even though not everyone may directly benefit from the mining boom, it seems with the population increases, it will help fuel the ripple effects that will continue to spill out and benefit our housing, retail and other business opportunities helping them profit and grow in our resource enriched area. Seeing what the rapid growth has transformed Mackay, Airlie Beach and our western areas into in only a few years, it can only be assumed the best is yet to come for our booming region.

Try getting your head around this – how do I get into the mines if I don’t have mining experience when I need mining experience to get into the mines?
We all get swamped with endless stories about how the mining sector is screaming out for experienced workers, but seriously – unless they have been under a rock for the last couple of years (possible), chances are these experienced workers already know that they’re in demand. So if they’re not knocking on the door of your next big mining project, maybe it’s time to look at different avenues for getting a skilled workforce. There are a huge chunk of available workers out there who are keen to work in resources, each with their own unique skill set or willingness to learn and be moulded. But – they don’t have mining experience, they’re Cleanskins and they need a bit of extra effort and support so that they can be dropped into the large amount of jobs that currently need filling. Trying to get into the mines can be a disheartening, drawn out process when you can’t tick one of the big boxes – “experienced only need apply”. Being a Cleanskin is extremely limiting to your chances of even getting to a first-stage phone interview, let alone actually getting the job. And this desperation is felt on both sides, non-mine experienced applicants putting in resume after resume vs mining and labour hire companies going through resume after resume trying to find someone with a bit of mining experience. Two groups of people – same basic problem, mining experience needed! One method gaining some traction at the moment is the use of training facilities, such as the new underground training complex just opened in Pinkenba, Brisbane by Mastermyne. Launched as “Myne Start”, this instructional facility is focused on providing course entrants with hands-on training, safety-first attitudes and real, useable qualifications on completion. Following the success of the Mackay complex, the new Brisbane centre is supposedly massive and will be capable of training up to 700 people a year. At the launch itself, the benefits of the training facility were praised by some pretty heavy duty mining bigwigs – namely Andrew Cripps (Minister for Natural Resources and Mines) and Michael Roche (Director of the Queensland Resources Council). The word from the men at the top is
44 • www.coremag.com.au
that skilled mining labour is on the critical list, and that new methods and a fresh mindset are needed if Australia is going to get a handle on such a prominent source in our economy. Another mining heavyweight, Anglo American, is also getting behind the project by donating the equipment to be used in the underground training facility. This type of support shows that the mining giants are fully twigged to what is happening and looking outside the box as to what can be done about it.
Open to both
individuals looking to up-skill and companies wanting to repurpose their workers (eg contracting companies), the Brisbane and Mackay training facilities might be part of the answer to Australia’s top-dollar question – where are we going to turn next to keep the mines running? Importing overseas labour is often baulked at, especially considering the 1000’s of Aussie applications that mining recruiters say they are receiving for a single job posting. For more information on the Myne Start underground training complexes in Brisbane and Mackay, logon to www.mastermyne.com.au/myne-start-training-complex.
The Myne Start training courses are actually part of a recruitment process, so yes – you will need to submit another resume. Make sure yours stands out with the following key points:
Visit the Mackay City Centre website today!
• Highlight any trade or labour experience that you have gained, whatever the industry. It still counts as labour and that’s what working in the mines will be if you’re successful. • When listing the skills and tasks for your previous positions, try to include teamwork and a strong safety focus as often as applicable. Eg worked as a kitchenhand? Point out the daily maintenance you undertook to ensure a safe working environment for all kitchen staff (if you weren’t there, they’d have piles of dirty dishes and unhygienic work surfaces – not cool!) • Don’t get caught up in useless info – list all your jobs but recruiters don’t need to know that you have used your super dooper EFTPOS skills at every single retail position you’ve held. Unless it’s important to the application, take it as a given that they know that retail involves money-handling. • Include a goal or objective statement at the start of your resume, under your contact details. Recruiters can then see if your aims would be achieved with them and what type of expectations you have. Whether you’re shooting high or just content to do the everyday stuff, a few sentences on what you are looking for may just get you past the first stage over someone with no direction. • Keep it simple, stupid – clean and clear fonts, basic formatting and normal spacing and margins. Yes – your resume will look like stacks of others. However, recruiters will be able to find the info they need quickly and easily in your CV and that’s what’s important – content is key! No matter how crazy you want to go with laying out your resume, it won’t hide the fact that you have no experience. • Be clear, upfront and positive – attitude can go a long way and that can come across on paper just as easily as it can in person. Your cover letter doesn’t need to be over-the-top sunshine, but don’t even think about writing that you’ve put in 100’s of resumes (you can say you’re keen, but don’t be a nagger). And yeah, you’ve got to do a cover letter!

How times have changed! We took a look at the mining industry over the years and how it’s developed. As the world plunged in to the Industrial Revolution, coal became a highly sought after commodity for the powering of steam engines. The first coal discovered in Australia was in 1791 and by 1801, Australia’s first commercial coal mine was in operation.
At the turn of the century the safety of the miners underground was the sole responsibility of the mine owner and miner themselves. Safety equipment was primitive and often not used at all. Only after several mine disasters, the Australian government began to regulate the industry and introduce safety regulations. It wasn’t until an outburst of carbon dioxide in 1954, that caused the death of 7 men and 2 pit ponies that safety was considered a real issue to address. A lack of
Back in the 1900’s, there were no restrictions on the length of shifts that the workers were expected to work, sometimes working up to 18 hours a day. Compared to these days, 12-hour shift restrictions are now in place, as part of a safe work practice and fatigue management. It’s still a long-ass day in our opinion!
Now-a-days, between gloves, boots, work vehicles specifications, fatigue management, MSDS, noise management, some are debating whether these precautions hinder the workers and their ability to do the job… It begs the question, did we have it right back in the day?
In the 1800’s, miners did not have hard hats to protect their heads. Instead they wore cloth miner’s caps like this one or simply used their everyday felt hats. Note the metal plate on this hat with a small hole at the top. The hook of a candlestick or an oil wick lamp would fit into the hole, allowing the miner to light his way while keeping his hands free for other tasks. www.darylburkhard.com
In the early years, miners adopted hand-mining techniques that were common across the world. Working in pairs and at contract rates, miners used simple tools and pit ponies to bring the coal to the surface. With open flames torches attached to the workers’ helmets in the 1900s, it’s clear how much things have changed. 46 • www.coremag.com.au
safety equipment and communications hampered the rescue, reinforcing the need for better safety conditions, communications and equipment.

With the combination of “Call” from Michaels last name Callander, and “Corr”, Melissa’s maiden name, “Callcorr,” was created on a Sarina property workshop in 2007. “We started operating from a workshop on Michael’s parents Sarina property. We made the decision to create Callcorr, as we felt there was a strong demand for off site machinery workshops, that could not only deliver a high quality off site service, but a service that was undertaken by handpicked quality tradesman.” Melissa said. Michael, being a qualified Diesel Fitter with an impeccable reputation in the industry, was the reason they decided to take on this business venture. Hoping that his reputation alone would be instrumental in the growth and success of the business, they registered their business and literally overnight, Callcorr became a house-hold name! Michael was born and bred into the industry. His parents owned and operated Callander Earthmoving and Mining, a business that specialised in Civil and Mining for more than 39 years. “No wonder Michael lives and breathes this industry!” Melissa said. With only a humble crew of four, including Michael who managed just two other qualified tradesman and Melissa learning the administration and accounting side of the business, all whilst trying to balance their most important roles as parents. They knew that this venture would be both challenging and rewarding. “With our new born Layla, by our sides and two other children, Madisson and Travis demanding all our attention, Callcorr took on its first job. We bought a large pump motor and did it up to sell, so we could purchase our first work ute. I guess you could say we were our own first client if that makes sense!” Melissa said. “Within a year we went from a team of four to a team of eighteen! Michael continued to take on more and more fitting work, doing component rebuilds for our growing clientele base, whilst I was still getting my head around being a mum of three and tackling the expanding administration, HR and accounting departments.” “Growing up around Moranbah and Dysart, you could say that I am a true country girl. Michael and I met at Sarina High when my family relocated to Sarina. After school, I didn’t meet up with Michael again until I was in my 30’s. I went from working in a local pharmacy, to a sales assistant at Camping World, where I felt more at home, selling and promoting everything outdoors! When Michael and Melissa met up again it was inevitable that they would find their greatest happiness living and working on their Sarina property. It wasn’t long before the demand for their business out grew the humble home workshop, so in 2011 they decided to make the move into a bigger and more elite workshop. “We now have a dedicated crew of 52 and are still recruiting! Its just amazing how much we have grown! Since we decided to relocate to our new premise in Mackay, we have tripled in size. We are not about numbers, we are about quality. Quality attracts quality.” Michael said. Tyring to balance family life with the demand of a growing business, would still have to be their greatest challenge today. Both Michael and Melissa work hard to ensure that their children still receive as much of their spare time and focus as possible. When they get time away from the business, which has now become a lot easier to do with the right staff in place, they put all their energy into their family and friends. “Ensuring that the business has a minimal effect on our family is of the upmost importance to us both. Even after a hard week at work, we make the time to do family stuff together. We love to get out on our motor cross track, riding horses, camping, swimming, fishing in the creeks, raising calves and our veggie garden. You would think that having three children, a demanding business and a cattle property would be too much to take on, but coming home to our property is what keeps us balanced.” Michael said. “We understand that this industry is growing at a rapid pace, and with it the expectations of our clients, this is always forefront in our minds. 50 • www.coremag.com.au
CORE Magazine caught up with Melissa and Michael Callander. We found out that behind their successful company, everything has a personal meaning, even their name “Callcorr”.
Although some would say that the industry has become competitive, the only thing we really are competing for is quality staff. Our staff are like family to us, and we enjoy spending time with them all. It is the respect we have for them, both on a personal and professional level, that we believe sets us apart from others. Without a doubt, our crew are the reason that Callcorr has become the successful and respected company it is today.” Melissa said. Every business in our industry should appreciate its assured growth, as it
continues to grow and evolve beyond all our expectations. We never want to lose sight of how lucky we are, or take our clients for granted. Safety and ongoing training are our priority. We strive to have pride in our work and our staff. ” Michael said. This is the foundation in which Callcorr is built on, a foundation that assures their ongoing success and growth in the future.

A miniature to scale replica of a dump truck may sound like a bit of fun, but Bushie from Bushie’s Mining Models is all about the serious side of safety. With over 30 years’ experience in mining machinery operations, Bushie has devised a new and innovative training method to enforce the ‘Zero Harm at Work Program’ and promote safe work practices.
cost effective, and easily integrated into your training procedure. Bushie’s models are available for purchase or rent through Priority Funding. Zero Harm is a noble vision, and one that requires a modicum of common sense applied for any chance of success.
“About16 years ago I was working on a site in WA. We were having a lot of accidents, so on my break I made my first model to test at site. It only took a couple of weeks to see the change it made on site, instances down and production up. Bushie is a member of the Zero Harm at Work Leadership Program to promote safe work practices. His extensive career is evidence that implementing models in conjunction with SOPS will help to achieve zero harm targets, achieve better production and reduce tyre wear, which is a huge benefit when considering the current global tyre shortage. Most importantly, Bushie’s models will bring students and skilled operators together to show and share operational procedures that will increase safety awareness and enhance productivity on site. This will inevitably increase profitability whilst creating a safer work environment. With an approved patent and IP protection, Bushie’s models can be custom made to suit your needs. They are carbon neutral and 100% tax deductible when used for training purposes, making it very achievable,

ABC Heavy Engineering is one of Mackay’s leading engineering companies, owned and operated by locals Maurie, Rick and Paul Smith. The company is modelled on “Reclamation & Rebuild Lifecycle Engineering” which helps dramatically lower the cost of asset ownership.
We are located at 35 Commercial Avenue in Paget offering 10,000 square metres of workshop floor capacity and 3 hectares of lay down area. We have CNC machine tools capable of handling 150 tonne components up to 14 metres in length. Along with our existing Slew Bearing section, the factory also comprises an Induction Hardening and Heat Treatment Section as well as General and Heavy Engineering Sections. ABC Heavy Engineering have a Site Service Division enabling the company to carry out a range of services including long term and short term breakdown, shutdown and contract maintenance. They are able to quickly respond to breakdown requests and have a range of capabilities with experienced Dragline Boom-welders, including fully equipped welding trucks, boilermakers, riggers / crane drivers, electricians and more. Always looking out for their clients’ needs, ABC Heavy Engineering offers the best project management skills available and can provide planning and maintenance strategies to optimise the production performance and maintenance costs of any operation. ABC Heavy Engineering saw its roots as Australian Bearings Corporation Pty Ltd identifying opportunity in the form of manufacturing and repairing large diameter slew bearings. In Australia at the time the only option was to purchase new bearings manufactured in Europe and Asia. Securing component supply lines out of Europe and China and aligning with a fellow Australian Company, BMT WBM to provide Australian Bearings Corporation with the engineering and metal science requirements necessary for bearing manufacture and refurbishment were fundamental to the Slew Bearing business. Ingenuity played its part along the way as the company progressed from bearing manufacturing and refurbishment to broader engineering capability including research and development. Maurie Smith takes . particular pride in their latest patented in-house invention: has been designed and created by ABC Heavy Engineering to provide a combined wear reclamation weld layering / cladding and machining process that allows for the weld application, finish
64 • www.coremag.com.au
machining and immediate self hardening of highly wear resistant weld metals which are completely compatible with the parent or base component material, all in one continuous process. The process can be used for wear reclamation of existing components as well as a new manufacture and can be applied to a broad range of mining and industrial equipment. The new revolutionary welding process was patented in September 2011 and is currently being commercialised. It will reduce certain component refurbishment timeframes by up to two thirds, dramatically cutting equipment down-time. “For example, this new process has enabled us to reduce the factory turn around time for dragline rope drum rebuilds from six weeks to a little over process inside the dragline two weeks. We can also take the and repair the drum insitu without the requirement to remove the rope drums from the dragline, which is an extremely costly and time dependent exercise.” is something that can be adapted to a range of different “ applications and we do intend over time to make the whole process modular so it can be containerised and taken offshore to other parts of the world as we get our world wide patents in place.”

Q
How did the business start, Dan?
Basically my father Bob A started out delivering support to maintenance professionals in the Bowen Basin in the form of CMMS, which are computerised maintenance management systems. To put it in a nutshell, he came into the business of developing maintenance practices which implement required change management processes, reducing operating costs and increasing productivity. When did you become the Q Business Development Manager for The Wisely Group? I started in the business in A 2006 when I became Health & Safety manager and from there I moved into my current role. Before The Wisely Group, I worked for Hastings Deering building the first 797 trucks that went to BMA Goonyella River Side mine. I then pursued a degree in OH & S and worked at BMA. Not only is your father the Q Director of The Wisely Group, but your sister, Sarah is a Human Resources Coordinator with Wisely. What’s it like working with your family? It keeps us on our toes. The A key to it all is that everybody in our family has a genuine care and responsibility for the business. It’s
always interesting working with your family. At the end of the day, we all have the same goal. All in all, I’ve been involved with business since I was 11 or 12 years of age. What are some of your Q early memories of the business? Dad used to go out early A Monday morning and he wouldn’t return until dark at the end of the week, then Mum and Dad used to work in the home office on the weekend. Dad was forever working. All of his hard work has started to pay off now. He always said to me, “You have two ears and one mouth: use them in that order.” At the end of the day, I got the motto of doing what I say I’ll do and providing good services to our clients. Not just any services, mind you, but the best services. We hear that your family Q has been involved with drag racing for a number of years. Those who work hard, play hard? For a long time now the old A man has been involved in drag racing, both in building cars and in driving. He’s built many a car throughout my childhood. We just completed our new car, a 1967 Camaro. It’s been about three years in the making. We’re really looking forward to getting back into the sport. We competed in the Winter Nationals this year and we intend to race the Pro Street Race

Wisely Asset Management also provides various resource support services throughout all vocations to assist the client to maximise the performance of their assets. Wisely & Associates Pty Ltd service the requirements of clientele requiring specialist professional maintenance support services in the form of Planning, Scheduling, Design, Engineering and Project management throughout Australia. Their personnel consist of highly skilled CMMS specialists who provide a range of maintenance services. 66 • www.coremag.com.au
Series in the coming season. We also race at Palmyra when we can. Back to The Wisely Group. Q Why is the company split into two sections, Wisely Asset Management and Wisely & Associates? It’s a diverse industry that we A work in. The mining and resource industry isn’t run of the mill. We’re always looking to improve and make things better from a business perspective. We work with a wide variety of people, so it’s important to be adaptable and flexible. The different elements of Wisely & Associates and Wisely Asset Management allow us to do this by specialising in what our customers require.
Q
How do you think makes the Wisely Group stand apart from the rest?
We’ve been around for 17 A years now. We do what we say we’ll do and we carry a very professional attitude towards our clients and our people. In one sense, what makes The Wisely Group stand out from others, are the people who work for us. We built our name on providing the best of the best people for the right professions.
Q
Who are some of those allstar people?
We have Jenny Ritchie our A senior HR coordinator, Neil Green, Manager of Wisely and
Associates, very good payroll people such as Dealia Walsh. We have other key people located at various mine sites who put in the hard yards to get the job done. We would not be where we are today without all of the people who work for us. Our business is only as good as the people who work for us; it wouldn’t be possible without them.
Q
Who have been your highest-profile clients?
All clients carry the same A value to our business; however our longest established relationships stand with BMA and Rio Tinto. We’ve had a long established relationship with these two companies since Wisely Group`s inception back in 1995. We’ve supplied resource personnel to both these organisations as well as strategic advice within the maintenance field.
Q
What’s next for The Wisely Group?
Continue business growth by A supplying professional services to the resource and industrial sectors as well as working with our clients to grow with them and strengthen our working relationships.
Q
And what’s next for you, Dan?
Carry on with the good A reputation our name has and continue to do what we say we will do.
“A” Altered: The altered is based on a 1923 Ford body with a 632Ci Nitrous injected Big Block Chevy engine which develops around 1400 Hp. “67 Camaro”: The 1967 Camaro was built to run in the Pro-Street bracket which starts off as a basic vintage street car then you add a roll cage, race seats, big rear end, race transmission, fat tyres and a whopping big Nitrous snorting Big Block Chevy engine.
Dan and Sarah Wisely carry on the family name at The Wisely Group For the past 17 years, The Wisely Group has supplied expert support services to the mining, construction, engineering, and industrial sectors across Australia. Specialising in providing support services including strategic planning, maintenance execution and human resource support services, The Wisely Group is made up of two well-established companies: Wisely Asset Management and Wisely & Associates. CORE magazine caught up with Dan Wisely, who is the eldest son of the founder and director of The Wisely Group, Bob Wisely.

Unlike standard brazed blades, the revolutionary MARATHON® with WeldTec™ saw blade from IRWIN® has welded carbide teeth. Welding fuses the carbide teeth to the blade, making the bond as strong as the steel plate. This bond is unaffected by the build up of heat, resulting in greater life and durability. WeldTec™ welded carbide teeth are much tougher than standard brazed blades, and offer superior tooth retention. They are sharpened to finer, more durable cutting edges that stay sharper for longer, and every other tooth is ground thinner, making this the FASTEST FRAMING BLADE. EVER.

With hefty weight issues arising from the mining sector, employees can now breathe a sigh of relief with the new “Weight Management Program” being coordinated by Dr Gert Maree and Dr David Cleveland at Occupational Health Alliance. Due to employers trying to combat the health and wellbeing issues of their employees, Dr Maree and Dr Cleveland have created a new medical program to help guide employees and individuals to manage their weight issues. There has been debate regarding the use of BMI (Body Mass Index) as a tool to determine a person’s fitness level while applying for jobs within the mining industry because of 120kg weight restrictions listed for certain types of machinery. With the discussion of these new changes in mind, Dr Maree and Dr Cleveland have created a weight loss management program to help assist individuals via the use of a tailor made program designed to change an overall lifestyle instead of targeting eating habits. “We decided to sit down together, and discuss the factors involved around an individual’s weight issue. We both have a special interest within
weight management and felt this program would be beneficial not only to individuals, but an entire workforce within Mackay and the Bowen Basin region.” Statistics have shown that individuals, who go on a diet, result in an increased weight of 10 – 20% within 2 years after completing their diet. This is due to the fact that the individual’s lifestyle has not changed, allowing the individual to commence old habits again. Weight management is not only important to the individual, but should also be considered apart of any company’s workplace health and safety program. Obesity is one of the leading causes associated with health problems which may result in a lowered life expectancy. Health risks associated with obesity, include but are not limited to, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon), erectile dysfunction and prostate disease.
We are not here to replace your normal Doctor, but to assist you in changing your lifestyle to accommodate weight loss.

The solution: the “Weight Management Program” being implemented at Occupational Health Alliance from June 2012 onwards. This program is designed to suit all individuals and work industries. There are no contracts or obligations, just Dr Maree and Dr Cleveland and their knowledge to assist in your weight management needs. “We are not here to replace your normal Doctor, but to assist you in changing your lifestyle to accommodate weight loss. We of course, administer the relevant tests, and if anything unusual arises, we will ensure a copy of results is given to the individual to pass onto their own Doctor in order for a treatment plan to be created.” All consultations are with Dr Maree or Dr Cleveland and include monitoring of the individual’s body measurements, (eg, waist circumference) weight, height, BMI and body fat%. This is achieved via the latest technology in weight management through the use of a Body Composition Analyser. Each individual will receive a folder containing their tailor-made weight loss management program, reading material and results from each consultation. Individuals will be seen and reviewed at week 1, week 2, week 4 and week 8 leading to monthly follow ups thereafter with a 6 monthly final review when goal weight has been achieved.
Occcupational Health Alliance is located within the Paget area and is available from 7.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday to assist with your occupational health needs. Apart from the new weight management program, Occupational Health Alliance can provide Surface and Underground medicals involving thorough medical examination, lung function (spirometry) testing, urinalysis and urine drug screening, alcohol breath testing, vision testing (long, short and colour vision), BMI screening and audio (hearing) testing. Their principle founders Dr Norman Dawes and Dr David Parker are nominated medical advisers under the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Regulation 2001 and provide this service to several industries and companies located within the Bowen Basin region. Occupational Health Alliance can provide management of work related injuries to your employees, including but not limited to, lacerations, foreign bodies in eye, crush injuries, burns and muscle strains. Their facility has a large fully equipped treatment room allowing fast and easy access for work related treatments and procedures.
Occupational Health Alliance has the ability to offer onsite consultations including preventative health screenings, health risk assessments, travel medicine, advice relating to workplace health and safety, skin screenings and patient care plans. With obesity, or the associated risks within a workforce, this could possibly lead to an increase of workplace injuries resulting in staff having extended time away from the workplace for work injury management and rehabilitation. This unfortunately leaves employers to source and train extra staff or try to complete projects within designated time restraints without a fully functioning workforce.

Well, the short answer is yes and no. But first, lets talk about who “they” is. “They” is the Therapeutic Goods Administraion (TGA) which is the body in Australia that controls everything that we might take, or use, for any kind of health or supplemental reason. The TGA watches over every clinical therapy, every medical product, every therapeutic treatment, every medicine and classifies most every chemical we might come in contact with. They even control breast implants and walking sticks! The TGA wants to reclassify a stimulant called Dimethylamine (DMAA) that is found in more than 200 different supplements on the market at present. DMAA is a substance that can be derived from the stem of the Geranium plant that has stimulant properties. The TGA has decided to attempt to reclassify DMAA as a “Schedule 9”, which means it’s a pharmacy or prescription only product. What this means is it can only be imported or sold in Australia under strict conditions once the change comes into effect. Why they are doing this is not entirely clear, except to say that the TGA often likes to control stimulants, and has a history of doing so.
Oxy Elite, while containing many wonderful natural ingredients, includes some caffeine and a very small amount of DMAA when compared to many products. So it too will be a casualty of this TGA control. Other products affected (of more than 200) include Jack 3D, Mesomorph and nearly every pre workout on the market!
IS OXY ELITE SAFE? Absolutely. Consider this: In the U.S. alone, last year an estimated 1 Billion doses of DMAA were sold and consumed, with no adverse reactions on record.
So it’s likely that our BELOVED OXY WILL DISAPPEAR for a while until it’s REFORMULATED. As will many other products. I’ll leave you with this thought…. High caffeine energy drinks have been linked with scores of health problems including serious seizures and open to abuse by a reckless few. Yet kids as young as 6 or 7 can buy them at any corner shop… Food for thought.
For a thousand years, Yoga and Meditation were the exclusive right of the male. The ancient wisdom being handed down through the generations - male to male. Fast forward to the 21st century and we find the opposite to be true. In recent years the physical practice of yoga has exploded. Millions of people worldwide are now benefitting from their yoga practice. But what we know to be true is that is it now mostly women!! Looking for leaner, stronger and more flexible bodies, the fairer sex are now promoting the awesome experience that is Yoga! So Gentlemen, its back to the mat! Yoga is not about standing on your head or contorting yourself into an unrecognisable shape. Its more about the self discipline, strong breathwork, and being
present. Yoga can certainly be a challenging workout, buts it’s also a very enjoyable experience. A typical physical class takes the participants throughout a series of asanas (postures / poses / positions). Sometimes flowing, sometimes still, the asana will balance, stretch and strengthen the body. Each class finishes with a short period of relaxation where each participant simply lies or sits.
The first practitioners of yoga were men.
72.2% practicing yoga are women; 27.8% are men.
A male who practices yoga is referred to as a yogi or yogin, whereas a female who practices yoga is called a yogini.
Professional football and sports players are encouraged to do Yoga as part of their training regime in the lead up to a game, and also for general well-being.

Tough Mudder was created in 2009 by a couple of of British fitness fanatics who had the courses designed by a former member of the British Special Air Service (SAS). It runs over a 20km track with obstacles thrown into play such as high walls to climb, claustrophobic tunnels, making your way up steep inclines to ice water baths, down treacherous declines to pass 1.2m high flames, through gritty swamps and crawling through mud ridden trenches. But you do get a beer at the finishing line of course, you just have to pass through a 10,000 volt electronic shock therapy obstacle before you get handed your hard earned brew. To make your way through the 25 Military standard obstacles over 2.5 hours, takes determination, dedication, a lot of physical hardness and wit. But a massive part of the whole regime is your camaraderie skills, living the standard “no man gets left behind”. Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge and it is recommended that participants work together to get the course completed and as such 80% of participants complete the course as part of a team. When asked about the first event on Phillip Island in March, Will Dean, one of the creators of Tough Mudder was quoted as saying, “Internationally, there’s a perception that Australians consider themselves to be a nation of athletic and resilient men and women. Tough Mudder is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and we’re expecting up to 10,000 Aussies to put their money where their mouth is by signing up to our first event in March.” And put there money up they did, more than 21,000 people participated in the event on Phillip Island including the hard-core obstacle which runs the following day, and made Tough Mudders debut in Australia the most 76 • www.coremag.com.au
successful event yet amongst its 35 events being held internationally in cities across the US, Australia, the UK and Canada. The founders have also obtained charity partnerships in their respective countries giving participants the option of raising money for taking on the gruelling challenge which in Philip Island’s case, $47,000 was raised for Legacy Australia, the official charity partner for Tough Mudder 2012. With the contestants pulling the stinging nettles from their chests after finishing the Tough Mudder debut on Phillip Island, Australia received a job well done from Dean stating, “This is the biggest Tough Mudder event since I founded the company two years ago. I think it proves that Aussies are truly amongst the toughest in the world.” After a day of putting your body through one of the biggest challenges on offer today, the after party makes up for the mud you may never be able to remove from your glutei maximi. Offering a live band, concessions, strength contests and a complimentary mullet haircut, you can even get the Tough Mudder logo tattooed for a resilient badge of honour for your accomplishments with the Post-Party offering the permanent inking. With the second event being held at Sydney in September, all you need at the moment is a good level fitness and the readiness to train hard. Tough Mudder will punish you no matter what your fitness level is at the time and as long as you are over the age of 18, you qualify for the event. Contestants who participate, man or woman, range from lawyers, mechanics, florists, gym junkies, tri-athletes, hairdressers to Iron Men. The challenge does not discriminate fitness and endurance, as long as you have the mental stability needed to conquer this course, you can test yourself and see how tough you really are.
Day Sailing Adventures SO, ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE? Local guy Warren Borg will be competing in September at Sydney and is on a training frenzy to conquer Tough Mudder in record time.
Sail The Legend
TRAINING DAYS: Currently seven days a week, I try to give myself a day off a week but way too determined to relax. But maybe once a week I’ll have an easier training day than the rest. TRAINING TIMES: Usually twice a day, a run in the morning with some interval training and then cross-fit style at night, though on my days off (from the mines) it’s three times a day. TRAINING REGIME: Interval training every day - Power-Lifting
mixed with Aerobics (compound movements going from one to the other without stops) with a two minute break in between for five rounds which include 20 reps bench pressing, 20 reps squats, 20 reps of snatch lifts. Cross-fit style training every night which involves flipping tyres, using sandbags, gymnastic rings, burpees, pull-ups and hill climbers on a time trial training circuit. Running for 30 – 60 kms a week challenged by time. Muay Thai training a few times a week.
DIET: Low-carb, High Protein. Definitely no junk food. I’ll have lots of
fish and protein shakes and if I’m feeling like a snack I’ll have mixed nuts and sultanas, they’re an appetite killer and really work.
If you’re planning on competing and thinking of a training regime for yourself, go to toughmudder.com.au/training-prep for some great tips and advice.

Australia’s most infamous Motocross race happened last month in June at Alice Springs and local guy LUKE HENDRY was there to take up the challenge of one of the most difficult, two day multi-terrain track in memory of his late father Shane Hendry, a fellow motocross enthusiast, father and friend. Being a Motocross competitor for most of his life, Luke gave up the thrill seven years ago when he suffered severe injuries during an Australian Title Meeting resulting in six broken ribs, a punctured lung, a cracked sternum and internal bleeding. After hanging up his dirtencrusted helmet he found an alternative in waterskiing, purchasing a Matirx Sorrento Ski and Wakeboard boat replacing the speed and thrills of his beloved Motocross. “I had just started my business when the accident happened and I was laid up for about three months, dad covered for me while I was out but I realised I had to give up the sport...I couldn’t afford to do that again.” “Dad knew that I had to give it away when I started the business and when I got hurt he knew it was the best option, but I know it broke his heart when I actually did give it away.” Being “the best of mates” as well as a father and son team, Luke and his father Shane travelled the state and country together for over ten years racing competitively. Shane was always there to cheer on his son and being a mechanic by trade as well, did all the mechanical work on Luke’s bikes when he was out on track. Sadly, almost a year and a half ago on the morning of Luke’s 28th birthday, Shane suffered a severe heart-attack and unfortunately passed away. “I woke up the day of my birthday to find my dad having a major heart attack and was unable to save him. My dad has been there by my side with my racing my whole life and losing him has changed my whole out 78 • www.coremag.com.au
look on things.” “He always wanted me to do this desert race but I’ve never been able to make the time to do it properly...always been too busy with work to make the time to go..since that happened I have just made the time this year to go across and dedicate it to him.” Since being out of the game for so many years, Luke had put aside the hours needed to prepare physically, mentally and mechanically to race the challenging track, one which his father had travelled to every year to watch but never participated in himself. “Its over 450 kms in two days plus all the qualifying on the first day, physical fitness would have to be the biggest thing, so heaps of time was needed at the gym.” Not being a novice to Motocross, Luke participated in all the Australian Supercross series, the Australian Motocross Titles, the Australian National Titles and even rode together with famous Motocross rider, Chad Reed. After months of preparation for the big race, which happened over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of June, Luke took his brand new Suzuki RMZ 450 to Alice Springs and under the support and sponsorship of Patsmith Welding, Hendrys Performance Engines, Sunstate Motorcycles, MSC Products Australia and IMS Products, fought it out for the big win. But unfortunately Luke’s stellar start to the race ended abruptly during the race with a flat tyre taking out his chances this year, but, of course this is
only the beginning of his revived racing and career and Luke will continue on racing in memory of his late father. “I’ve got some awesome sponsors on board as well as supporters and crew that have stuck by me for years. I’m keen to concentrate on Enduro as Queensland has a great central off-road series.” “It’s not just about the racing, racing at Alice Springs was awesome, last month I met some amazing people who will now be life long friends. On the track everyone is there to win but when the helmet comes off it’s time for a beer, a laugh and re-cap the race.” “My dad, we’ve always been the best of mates, and have always been side by side. So coming back to Motocross, this is for him.”
Physical fitness would have to be the biggest thing, so heaps of time was needed at the gym
Max Payne is having a pity party, and you are all invited. Let’s get the negatives out of the way first. I found myself thinking at one point “Oops, I’d better pick up the controller, I might have to do something soon.” This was not some insane deathwish I had for Max. This was a reaction to the lengthy early story cinematic cut scenes. At first, everything looks kinda crappy. At first, the lack of control by the player is a little frustrating. At first. Max Payne is on a path of destruction. Not just in a literal sense, but in a much more personal sense. Still deeply haunted by the horrific events of his past, he drowns his sorrows with drinking and prescription pills. His state of mind seems to effect how we view the world of Max Payne, with a stylistic flicker and grainy outlook. As he is pulled from his seedy life in New York to work security for Sao Paulo aristocracy, everything becomes clearer. Max’s drive returns, the world around him sharpens, everything starts to make sense in a frenetic, fast paced way. This is where the real fun starts. In combat, Bullet Time® is a cool effect that allows you to slow down time to line up a series of shots, often necessary to take down a group that are trying to riddle your body with bullets. Using Shoot Dodge whilst in Bullet Time® does what the name implies. You can move out of the line of enemy fire, fast. Together they work really, really, well and
can totally save your bacon in a tricky situation. When it’s Max Payne against an army of enemies, you’ll be glad you have them. Single handed and duel wielding options provide some variety in gun play, and when you run out of ammo there are still a number of melee attacks to keep you going. Hard lock provides the most aiming assistance and with soft lock you need to at least be looking in the general direction of the enemy first. The right place to find cover is so important in this game, but you can’t stay anywhere for long. The enemies will try to flush you out by any means necessary. Max’s addiction to painkillers actually becomes useful during gameplay, becoming a life-saving health boost. If you are about to die and still have a painkiller in your stash, you are given a chance to take out the enemy who shot you. If you can kill him, you take the painkiller and live to fight another day. Nearing the end of an intense battle you are rewarded with a beautiful cinematic slow motion of your last kill. The graphics for these wounds are brilliantly violent and beautifully detailed. The sequence is also quite useful for letting you know it’s safe to move on. The single player story develops into a complex, interweaving full-blown crime mystery action thriller. Max himself can’t keep up with who is trying to kill who and why in more than one instance. The soundtrack is engaging, the voice acting convincing, the characters realistic and the plotline is gripping.

Coming this month... Dry July is a pretty appropriate description here. There are only a couple of new 3DS titles out and a couple of High Definition re-releases. My recommendation: This might be the time to get back into Skyrim, hone your Tekken skills or learn how to pay Guitar Hero on Expert. 80 • www.coremag.com.au
