MEET MR AND MRS COLLIS

Brian and Rebecca Collis are tasting success in the Emerald food business. As owners and managers of Char House Bar and Grill, Le Porte Rosse, Emerald Airport Cafe and Collis Catering, the couple is busy building up the local dining scene. It all started on the Gold Coast. Brian, who owned his first restaurant at 21 and trained in Echuca, Victoria, was managing a number of cafes. Rebecca was training as a graphic and industrial designer. “I sort of dragged her into the restaurant business and we incorporated our backgrounds,” said Brian. After travelling to Emerald for a job interview five years ago, Brian saw great potential in the food business. Together they made the move inland and created Collis Catering, originally designed for a tender advertised in the regional newspaper. In addition to catering, Brian and Rebecca bought and opened two restaurants in Emerald, including Oscars Brasserie at the Meteor Motel and Blah Blah Sandwich Bar. After moving on from Oscars and selling Blah Blah, they turned Red Orchid restaurant into Char House Bar and Grill. At the same time, Brian and Rebecca opened La Porta Rossa, the first Italian restaurant in Emerald, and the Airport Cafe. “Our business model has been to match excellent locations with the appropriate style of business,” said Brian. Running three restaurants and a catering business is a carefully-planned process for Brian and Rebecca. They use yearly, quarterly, weekly and daily plans and share the workload. Brian spends most of his time in the 8 www.corelife.com.au

kitchen at La Porta Rossa filling in where needed while Rebecca manages the accounts, designs menus and works at Char House. To top it off, they have three small children. After renovations to Char House are completed in early 2013, Brian and Rebecca will keep looking for great locations to match with new restaurants. “We draw inspiration from our peers and restaurants throughout Australia,” said Brian. To enquire about their Private Chef service, wedding catering or corporate catering, visit colliscatering.com.au. To book a table or view a menu at Emerald’s finest bar and grill, visit charhouse.com.au or find them on Facebook by searching ‘Collis Catering’ or ‘Char House’.

IVE GEARING ABOLISH NEGAT

THE ABOLITION OF NEGATIVE GEARING IS A HOARY OLD CHESTNUT THAT RAISES IT’S HEAD EVERY FEW YEARS, BUT THOSE POLITICIANS WITH LONG MEMORIES SOON SHUT IT DOWN. Whilst from some tenant’s unions, politicians and economists there are calls to abolish the tax advantages of negative gearing, it is most unlikely that either side of government would change the current situation. In 1983, with Bob Hawke as Prime Minister and Paul Keating as Treasurer, a decision was made to abolish negative gearing in the future. There was no effect on those investors who had negative geared properties at the time. Prior to this event, the Federal Government had little idea of the amount of rental accommodation that was provided by private investors. It was like turning off a tap! Investors stopped buying houses and an extreme shortage of rental accommodation put pressure on housing commission type rentals, which still exists today. Within two years Australia had a shortage of rental accommodation and there were not enough houses being built to keep up with a growing population. Rather than lose face by readmitting negative gearing, Paul Keating tried to solve both the rental and housing shortage by allowing investors to depreciate the cost of a new building at a flat rate of 4% per annum. This was introduced on 18/7/1985. Whilst investors welcomed this tax incentive that they had never had before, they still demanded the reintroduction of negative gearing. After two years of pressure, the government gave in by again allowing negative gearing from 15/9/1987 and the BONUS was that flat rate depreciation which was reduced from 4% to 2.5% was still included. If, for example, the building cost today is $300K, you now write off $7,500 from your taxable income every year you retain that property in addition to tax incentives for negative gearing. The whole point of this is that, if you buy an existing house for investment, it does not help the economy, whilst the building of a new house increases the total number of houses and in the process increases employment and stimulates the economy. If you are concerned about the possibility of the reintroduction of negative gearing, buy now - as historically the existing tax benefits will continue to apply.

for the boys MOTORSPORT ENTHUSIASTS AND ESPECIALLY FORD FANS ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE XY GTHO PHASE 3 FORD FALCON WIN AT BATHURST AND THE AUSTRALIAN TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE EARLY 1970S WITH ALLAN MOFFAT AT THE WHEEL, GAVE A GENERATION OF RACING FANS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING ERAS IN AUSTRALIAN MOTOR RACING HISTORY. Lakeside and Queensland Raceway host the Qld Group N Historic Touring Car Racing Series and 40 years on this era has been reborn, with door handle to door handle competition alongside Monaro’s, Torana’s, Escorts and Mustangs stirring the hearts of fans Australia-wide and drawing large crowds. Mackay local, Clinton Arentz, who has secured the role of driver of the McGrath Racing/Yager Performance prepared 1971 XY GTHO, which is personally autographed by Allan Moffat, is making the most of some high caliber mentoring and racing experience, behind the wheel of one of the greatest race cars ever built. Those who know Clinton Arentz know he never shy’s away from a challenge, and on the back of the successful entry to tarmac rallying at the same time, the offer to competitively drive a GTHO Phase 3 Falcon was irresistible. Car owner Garry McGrath purposely sourced and built the Falcon to replicate the ‘71 XY GTHO Falcon that won Allan Moffat the Hardie Ferodo 500/Bathurst 1000 in 1971. Clinton says that “he took a 20 year break from the sport to focus on building his business, Winston Group, and is delighted to have reunited with the team for a program of Group N racing, including preparations to race at the legendary Mount Panorama race circuit in March next year. Racing is in Clinton’s blood as Clinton’s dad, Barry Arentz, and co-driver Brian Michelmore, raced as a team alongside the greats of the era in the late 60s early 70s and have chalked themselves into the history books as 12 www.corelife.com.au

great drivers in their own right. Brian and Barry make every race event and provide support and strategic race craft advice to Clinton along with expert technical support to enable Clinton to race hard and stay safe. Last weekend Queensland Raceway hosted the last Historic Touring Car Group N event of the year, with two sensational days of great racing. The Falcon GTHO outperformed at the hands of Arentz to take pole position in qualifying. Clinton and the GTHO went on to take four wins out of four races at the weekend, and Arentz has left the crowds and fellow competitors with no doubt he is going to be back next year and a serious contender for the championship. The outright win in the event at QR makes it three outright wins for the last three race meetings, so car and driver are in form. “Driving her is challenging. This is my fourth event in her, we have a little catch up for a few testing laps and then we race for grid placement, and then it is race on. Winning is important but equally so is getting her on the truck and back into the garage without a scratch. Everyone goes home happy!”. Clinton noted “the GTHO is capable of incredible acceleration and feels like a rocket when the throttle is planted”. “At peak revs of 7000 rpms, it screams down the straights but with no power steering and running the original 1971 brake package, it takes some doing to get her to stop and point into corners, driving her at full noise is not for the faint hearted”. Clinton Arentz’s next outing in the Falcon is set for Bathurst next year and

preparations are underway to have the car and driver ready for serious competition. “The GTHO Falcon is best suited to the Mount Panorama track, she will take it in her stride. Fortunately I had 5 days of training with Bathurst master, Jim Richards at Sprint Bathurst in my Evo 10 rally car last year so I know the track and the race lines fairly well. The team all wants to do as well as we can at this upcoming iconic event!”, Arentz says. Clinton Arentz’s father Barry raced the Hardie Ferodo 500 (now the Bathurst 1000) in 1966, 67, 68, and 69. He and co driver, Brian Michelmore raced a Falcon GTHO of their own in 1969, taking delivery of the very first of the GTHO Phase 3 Falcons that rolled off the Ford Motor Company production line. Winston Development services sponsors Clinton’s racing activity. Follow the Winston Racing team and see racing from the drivers seat at: www.winston.com.au

for the boys THE STREETS OF EMERALD AND THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS WILL BE PEPPERED WITH PINK WHEN CENTRAL HIGHLANDS AUTO LAUNCHES THEIR NEWLY DESIGNED NUMBER PLATE FRAMES THIS WEEK, TO HELP CANCER COUNCIL QUEENSLAND RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS TO BEAT BREAST CANCER. Featuring the message “Proudly Supporting Cancer Council Queensland”, the pink plates will frame the number plate of each car sold, with Emerald’s Central Highlands Auto donating $20 per plate set to Cancer Council Queensland. Central Highlands Auto General Manager Michael Anstee said their new pink number plate frames were an opportunity to support a cause that was close to the heart of their community. “Traditionally, motor dealers brand the cars they sell with their business details to help our customers feel connected to their local community. “It has long been a part of Craig Black’s business philosophy to demonstrate his commitment to the community by giving something back to our friends, neighbours and customers whose lives have been affected by adversity, in this case breast cancer. “We sell around one thousand cars each year, so during the next 12 months, with $20 donated per car, will equate to a $20,000 donation to a very worthwhile cause. “Having lost both my parents to different forms of cancer it also means a

lot to me personally, and I am very proud to know our team will be doing what we can to support the fight against breast cancer all year round,” he said. Cancer Council spokesperson Victoria Bradshaw said it was great to see a local business taking the initiative to support local cancer patients and their families. “Thanks to generous support and the hard work of our local supporters like Central Highlands Auto and their communities, Cancer Council Queensland can continue to invest in potentially life-saving research, prevention and early detection programs and support services for the 130 central Queensland women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. “We know early detection is vital to surviving a breast cancer diagnosis, and this will be a great eye-catching way to drive this message home, so to speak, to all local women,” she said. WHITSUNDAYS’ GAME FISHING SEASON STARTED WITH A BANG! Game fishing season in the Whitsundays has started and what a huge start it was! With exceptional numbers of billfish showing up with the first of the warm water currents to pass by the Whitsunday islands. Reports of 6-7 hook ups at North Molle Island, one awesome Friday had guys in tinnies hooking a lot of billfish. Some lucky enough to land them, some not so lucky. A lot of the marlin caught around the Whitsundays during this time, where caught or hooked inside the islands, giving anyone and everyone a great chance to catch their first or maybe just add another strike to their tally.

Eyes: Keeping an eye out for bait schools on the surface, fish feeding and current lines; these are a few things which will attract billfish and are prime areas to spend some time trolling. Keeping an eye on teasers and baits/ lures is a must so if a billfish comes up in your spread and doesn’t crash tackle what you have to offer, you can then free spool baits/lures to try and entice a strike.

Bait: This is a catch 22 situation and depends on who you speak to. Some anglers love to rig baits and use natural baits like garfish, mullet, slimies, Queenfish and ribbonfish but the catch being, with using these types of baits, trolling speeds are slow-between 4-6 knots. Advantage of using baits, it is a lot easier to get a bite out of a fish that is not striking aggressively.

Sounders: Your sounder is important to find schools of bait, which are not being fed on by birds and schools of bait that are not on the surface, Once you have found these bait schools, these are also great areas to find billfish and time should be spent trolling in these areas.

Lure: Anglers who like to use skirted lures which have higher trolling speeds of around 6-12 knots. Those who troll skirted lures cover a lot more ground than the guys trolling baits. But the catch being, it is a lot harder to free spool and feed a skirted lure to a fish that isn’t striking at your lure aggressively.

Keeping the boat slowly moving forward as you bring the fish up beside the boat is the safest and easiest way to land a billfish as the fish will always be swimming. When trying to land a billfish in a stationary boat, the fish start to sink from not swimming and as the fish starts sinking, it will start to swim again but with the bill in your hand and the fish sinking and trying to swim, the bill will be heading towards your upper body and is extremely dangerous to the angler.

Eyes, birds and sounders are the three VERY IMPORTANT things to have when trying to find a Billfish. 16 www.corelife.com.au

Birds: Birds are a great way to find surface schools of bait and fish feeding from a long distance away.

Dolphin Point (northern point of Hayman Island) A great spot which produces a lot of billfish during the season. Hannah Point (N/W point of North Molle Island) This spot has produced a lot of billfish this season and still seem to be fishing extremely well. Nara Inlet (west side of Hook Island) Normally famous for Spanish Mackerel, another great spot to chase a billfish. The Oval (east of the Edwards Group) An awesome spot but a big boat is needed with a lot of fuel as this spot is very close to the reef, it is the size of an oval and located in the shipping channel with deep drop offs and a lot of bait.

THESE ARE SOME BASIC SPREAD IDEAS FOR LARGE AND SMALL BOATS. THESE ARE JUST IDEAS AND AREN’T THE ONLY WAY TO SET YOUR BOAT UP BUT ARE A GREAT START.

Pioneer Rocks (heading east from Able Point. This is the rock with the pole and light on them) This place is very underestimated for game species but after this billfish season this spot will be a favourite with a lot of people with a huge amount of billfish caught here this year. Choosing the right motorcycle or ATV for your child can be a difficult and sometimes daunting task for parents. Apart from price and quality, parents can be unsure as to what type and style of bike would be best for their young one/s. On many occasions, parents are looking to purchase one bike that can be used by a number of their children who range in age and size, therefore selecting the right bike is a very important exercise. Some would suggest it is like buying a child a new pair of shoes, therefore try to get something a little larger so that they can grow into it. Central Bike Centre in Emerald are specialists at assisting parents in making that very important decision.

DON’T

MISS OUT!

It is very important that a child enjoys the experience of riding their new bike and not become frightened through having a bike that is too tall or powerful for them. The last thing parents want is a bike sitting, being unridden as the child is too frightened to ride it.

Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki have a range of motorcycles and ATV’s especially designed for their young riders. Many are fitted with restrictors which allow parents to manage the amount of acceleration that their young ones can have. As their riding skills improve, parents can adjust the restrictor to increase or decrease available power. Always remember it’s safety first and ensure the children are fitted with the appropriate safety equipment when using the motorcycle or ATV. If the child realises that riding their new bike goes hand in hand with putting on their safety equipment, this will ensure a safe riding experience. And always ensure they are supervised by an adult. Come in and see us at Central Bike Centre where we will take the time to help you make that important decision.

cover story BORN INTO A FAMILY OF DOCTORS AND A POLITICIAN, ANNE-MARIE OXLEY WAS SURELY DESTINED FOR THE SAME FATE. BUT THIS STUNNING 29 YEAR OLD CAUGHT UP WITH REBECCA ATKINSON THIS MONTH TO TELL US WHY SHE HAS NO REGRETS ABOUT HER MOVE TO AUSTRALIA AND HOW SHE LOVES BEING THE BLACK SHEEP OF THE FAMILY.

Anne-Marie grew up in the French Canadian city of Quebec in Canada. Her childhood was jam packed with sporting activities. If she wasn’t ice skating, skiing or snowboarding, you would find her shooting hoops on the basketball court. At 6 feet tall, Anne-Marie was considered one of the smaller players on her team, but this didn’t stop her from scoring a scholarship to McGill University. “I was quite the reputable basketball player! I represented my province and my country, through national junior teams, and played in both the national and international competitions for many years,” she said. Anne-Marie was a dedicated student, to say the least. Even spending her 21st birthday in the library eating cake and studying, the night before her final accounting exam. This dedication continued for a number of years and saw Anne-Marie graduate on the Dean’s honour list, with honourable mentions for her academic performances, and not to mention the international recognition from the US Consulate General. “I received a special mention for the work I did as part of an international business internship. I found out later that this was a well-paid position, a position I had volunteered to do for free! What can I say, my first real business negotiation was not so good, but the experience and knowledge was priceless,” she said laughing. 24 www.corelife.com.au

With the promise of a great career and future ahead, Anne-Marie could have jumped straight into her pick of jobs, but instead she jumped straight on a plane bound for Airlie Beach in Australia. “I wanted to take advantage of the good old one year working holiday visa! However my business career ambitions were slightly diverted, and I found myself working as a hostess on sailing boats in the Whitsundays,” she said smiling. Like so many other locals in the Whitsundays, it’s the discovery of beautiful islands, clear waters, and the feeling of freedom, fun and life that draws you here, but it is, as it was for Anne-Marie, finding the love of your life that keeps you here. “I fell head over heels for the skipper of my boat! We have been happily married for 6 years, and I can honestly say that in finding him, I found my everything!” she said. Finding unconditional love and support in her marriage, and with her new Australian family and friends, Anne-Marie now considers Australia home. Looking back she recalls her life in Canada and how different it would have been for her, if she didn’t get on that plane. “I guess you could call me the black sheep! I grew up in a very driven and ambitious family,

whose ideas and expectations were not necessarily the same as mine. I took the risk, going against everything that was expected of me, and found happiness and a life I had always dreamed of. If this makes me the black sheep, then that’s just fine with me,” said Anne-Marie. With her current position as the Project Manager for the Whisper Bay Development, Anne-Marie’s business ambitions are well and truly back on track. “This is definitely a fantastic challenge and a great leap in my career. I work directly with the owners, a Chinese development group, who are based in Melbourne. I manage the strategic use of local assets, which range from the hotel management, marina berths, real estate and body corporate departments.” Anne-Marie is looking forward to turning 30 this month, and Christmas in the Mornington Peninsula with her Aussie family. There are no 5-year plans written out somewhere for Anne-Marie. She believes that life itself is your only true plan. “What I love about life is that it can change dramatically and quickly, and take you on journeys you never would have imagined being on. I embrace that in my personal life and I can only hope for the same in my career. If you asked me right now, I’d say that in 5 years I would like to manage my own business. What that business will be, I don’t know, but it will be very cool and exciting, but most of all - very successful.”

WE ALL KNOW CHRISTMAS AND THE FESTIVE SEASON IS A STRESSFUL TIME… HERE’S CORE’S GUIDE FOR YOUR MINI-BREAK, WHETHER IT’S A COUPLE’S RETREAT, A BOYS OR GIRLS ONLY WEEKEND OR IF YOU’RE TREATING THE FAMILY TO A GET AWAY!

Cruising through the 74 islands of the Whitsundays is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list. There’s scuba diving on the GBR, relaxing at Whitehaven beach, or (our pick) chilling at Daydream Island. With so much to do, you’ll never be bored these school holidays! Between the free activities like catamarans, kayaks, the gym, aqua aerobics, guided forest walks and live musical entertainment every night, there’s sure to be something that tickles your fancy. If you’re more inclined to stay in Airlie Beach, there’s a variety of great accommodation options. Our picks are Waterfront Whitsundays Retreat, Blue Horizon Resort Apartments, Waters Edge Resort, Marina Shores and Whitsunday Vista Resort. Airlie Beach Hotel is also a great option – complete with Capers at the Beach Bar & Grill, Cactus Jacks and Mangrove Jacks Café/Bar, you’ll be spoilt for choice! IF YOU’RE CENTRALISED IN MACKAY… Eungella: Located approximately an hour west of Mackay and 686 metres above sea level, Eungella boasts many unique attractions. Check out the magnificent views of the Pioneer Valley, 22kms of bush walking tracks within sub-tropical rainforest, platypus viewing and camping and resort accommodation, just to name a few! Eungella is the perfect destination for a day trip or an extended, relaxing stay. Bluewater Lagoon: The Bluewater Lagoon is a free family-friendly leisure facility, which overlooks Pioneer River in the heart of Mackay’s city centre! Perfect for barbeques with mates or your nearest and dearest. Soak up the sun and take a dip in stinger-free bliss. 32 www.corelife.com.au

Bluewater Trail: Get on ya’ bike! A key component of Council’s Bluewater Activation Strategy, there are six key sites along the Bluewater Trail pathway. A great option for the fitness enthusiasts! Caneland Central: Shopping, shopping, shopping! These are the words that come to mind when we think of Caneland Central! With a convenient location, the Centre offers the widest variety of stores and services and over 230 stores collectively with Myer, Target, Big W, Woolworths, Coles, JB Hi Fi and Best & Less. IF YOU’RE A LITTLE FURTHER SOUTH IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS… Emerald is now considered the hub for the Central Highlands. Here’s a little list of the essential things to keep the kids entertained during the festive season! Central Queensland’s Sapphire Gemfields: Make the discovery of a lifetime when you go fossicking for gems at the largest sapphire fields in the southern hemisphere. Fun for the whole family, who knows what treasure you might dig up? Van Gogh Sunflower Painting: The world’s biggest Van Gogh sunflower painting is situated in Morton Park, Emerald. The superstructure is 25m high with approximately 13.6 tonnes of steel involved in its construction. Fishing Hotspots: Grab your line and experience some exciting freshwater fishing in the waters of the Central Highlands. DON’T MISS REECE LIVE @ THE MECC ON 9TH JANUARY! MACKAYTIX.COM.AU

REMEMBER THAT GUY WHO WON X-FACTOR IN 2011? WELL AFTER A TREMENDOUS YEAR, REECE MASTIN IS NOW BEING DESCRIBED AS THE BREAKOUT STAR IN THE POP MUSIC GENRE FOR 2012. Sam from CORE caught up with the tween heart throb to have a chat about his journey into fame over the last few years, how things have changed and what’s coming up!

Q: You’re considered the breakout star of 2012, how do you feel about that title?

A: There’s no method, it [songs] can come from any situation in life, so there’s no structure to it. It just happens.

A: Well, that’s very flattering! It’s just awesome to have my music taken in like that – it’s a great feeling.

Q: Your new album, Beautiful Nightmare, debuted on October 19, are you happy with the response so far?

Q: How much has your life changed since your first appearance on X-Factor in 2011?

A: Yeah it’s awesome – it’s good to get more music out there!

A: Absolutely everything has changed. Nothing for the worse though – everything’s sweet as. Q: You certainly know how to work the stage – did you have any direction, or does this come naturally to you? A: It’s just a natural thing, I think. I didn’t have any training or anything like that, so I just did what kinda felt right and went with the flow. Q: You were mentored by Guy Sebastian [on X-Factor] – do you still keep in contact? A: Yeah we try and see each other as much as we can. With the new season of X-Factor and his new album, there’s a lot going on, so we don’t get to catch up as much as we’d like to.

Q: In the ‘Behind Closed Doors’ DVD release, how did you swindle collaborations with Benji Madden, Kelly Clarkson, the Jonas Brothers, Delta Goodrem, Bruno Mars, the front man from Puddle of Mudd and Hinder? A: It’s all about the writers. We went on a trip to LA and it just kinda shot off from there. Q: So you’re off the market, currently dating Rhiannon Fish from Home & Away – how did you two get together? A: We met on the clip for Shout It Out! We hit it off on set and it just started from there. Q: You’re heading to Mackay in early January – have you been to the area before?

Q: Do you have any inkling as to who will take it out in 2012?

A: No I haven’t! It’ll be my first time!

A: No idea – it could be anybody! We’ll just have to keep watching to find out.

Q: Do you think you’ll have time to explore the region, or are you in and then out again?

Q: You’ve been writing songs since the age of 12, do you have a particular method?

A: Hopefully I’ll have some time to look around – I love exploring new places.

entertainment EXQUISITE CONTEMPORARY INDIAN CUISINE THAT BURSTS WITH INTENSE FLAVOURS AND INTERESTING TEXTURES – THIS PHRASE CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THIS FANTASTIC RESTAURANT. Owner Ajay is excited to introduce dishes to Mackay that are only just being created in India, “We’ve got an extensive menu, which you wouldn’t normally see in other Indian restaurants, featuring dishes that are new to India.” With a Head Chef from India, with over 15 years experience in 5-star hotels under his belt, Saffron Lounge is offering contemporary and traditional Indian options. So what’s the difference between ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ Indian food? Basically a traditional Indian dish is made only from ingredients found/grown in India, whereas contemporary dishes are created using ingredients found elsewhere. Ajay goes on to say why the contemporary element of the restaurant is important. “We wanted to offer something that Mackay hasn’t seen before, and that’s why we’re very interested in exploring fusion in food.” An ideal example of how Saffron use fusion (and one you definitely have to try) is the Fish Sartaj (speciality). With oven-roasted salmon, ‘Tulsi and Sulva’ yogurt, golden garlic, lemon juice and garam masala, capsicums and prawn toppings, dill mustard mash, lemon-turmeric reduction, served with mint chutney, this is truly an amazing dish. Using Mediterranean ingredients and Indian herbs and spices, this dish packs a punch of flavours! Another stand-out dish is the Chicken-65, which (you guessed it) involves over 65 different ingredients to create this beauty. ‘But I’m a vegetarian,’ you say – no problem! Saffron Lounge also offers an extensive array of mouth-watering vegetarian options for your pleasure. Also available is a desserts menu that will have you unbuttoning the top button of your pants! A selection of fresh juices and Kulfi (ice cream) made on site. Now, if you’re a chocolate lover (and so many of us are), then you can’t go past the infamous Chocolate Naan Bread. Served with cream and drizzled with honey, this is one delectable masterpiece and a perfect end to your Indian feast! These guys also provide an outdoor catering service and home deliveries. In addition to these services, Saffron Lounge is open for lunch and dinner, so any time you have a hankering for some incredible Indian cuisine, they’ll be waiting for you! CLOWN SHOES BROWN ANGEL DOUBLE ALE

MOINETTE BLONDE

A dark brown backbone with notes of chocolate and coffee, American hops provide bitterness and some citrus, while a more delicate floral finish is achieved from the use of the classic English hop. This is NOT your old school brown, but rather a sexy American interpretation.

Coppery blonde with many fine hop aromas, the “Moinette blonde” is a very refreshing beer, thanks to its subtle balance between sweet, bitter and fruity. The selection of yeasts gives this beer its typical aroma and taste.

Who would have thought that rum and beer would work so well?

INNIS & GUNN RUM CASK OAK AGED BEER

TRIPEL KARMELIET A very refined and complex golden-tobronze brew with a fantastic creamy head. Tripel Karmeliet has not only the lightness and freshness of wheat, but also the creaminess of oats together with a spicy, lemony, almost quinine dryness.

BOTTLE TOP RATING

It’s the unique combination of specially brewed beer, rum and oak that just makes this beer sing! With soft fruits and malt, balanced by a lively spiciness from the rum, this brew finishes with a mellow and oaky flavour, with just a lingering of spice.

THIS MONTH WE CAUGHT UP WITH BROC CASEY, THIS EMERGING YOUNG TALENT HAS HER SIGHTS SET HIGH ON AN INTERNATIONAL CAREER, BUT FOR NOW SHE IS CONTENT TO STAY WORKING ALONGSIDE HER DAD IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS, STIHL SHOP WHITSUNDAYS. Q: How long have you lived in the Whitsundays? A: I moved here in December 2011, so it has been nearly a year now. I think that qualifies me as a local. Q: Where did you grow up? A: Weipa (Cape York) Q: What did you love most about living in Weipa? A: The freedom of the lifestyle Weipa offered. We would go camping for weeks at a time and not see another person. School life was also very laidback. We never had to wear uniforms or shoes to school. I never knew how much I loved it, until we relocated to Glenden. Q: How did you cope with the move to Glenden? A: Having to leave my friends and change schools was hard. Not only did I have to learn to wear shoes and a uniform, but also the school was very small. There were only three students who graduated with me in year 12, and I was one of them. You couldn’t help but to become close to everyone, and because of this, I have made many life-long friends. Q: What do you do for a living? A: I currently work at the Stihl shop Whitsunday in the family business. I am 48 www.corelife.com.au

a Stihl mechanic; studying for Stihl Bronze level training. I also work shifts at the Reef Gateway hotel a few nights a week. Q: What’s it like to work with your family? A: I absolutely love it. I know that many people say it’s hard to work with family, but not in my case. I get to spend the day working alongside my Dad, who is also my teacher. My Dad has always been the teacher in my life. If it wasn’t hunting, fishing or motorbike riding, it’s pulling apart motors and servicing equipment. For me it’s the same as it has always been, and I wouldn’t want to change it. Q: Was it always your dream to work in the family business? A: It has always been an ambition to work as a mechanic, but my dream would have to be finding a level of success in the fashion/acting industries. I got a taste for it when I was younger, and it has stayed with me. Q: You want to be a model/actress? Have you done any work in this field? A: Living in such remote regions has limited my opportunities, however I have managed to gain some work and experience. I have just signed up with Exquisite Model and Talent Management agency in Sydney and I’m excited about the possible opportunities that may come from this in the future.

Q: They say it’s a tough industry to be in, what do you think it takes to be successful? A: It most definitely is, I think if you really want to be in the industry you have to have a very thick skin. You can expect to be knocked back a lot and it’s a lot more work than people think. I believe if I continue to pursue my dream and put in the work necessary, than I have as good a chance as anybody. Q: So when you are not working in the Stihl shop, or in front of the cameras, what do you like to do? A: When I have free time, I like to spend it motorbike riding, hunting, fishing or just going to the beach with my dogs. Q: Besides your Dad, is there another special man in your life? A: Yes, there is my boyfriend Zac. We have been together for four years now. Q: If we were to catch up again in 5 years, where do you think you would be? A: Ultimately I would like to be working internationally in the entertainment/fashion industry. Understanding the challenges of breaking into this industry though, you may also find me managing the family Stihl shop and still enjoying a Whitsunday lifestyle.

for the girls STAR SIGNS, WHAT DO THEY SAY ABOUT YOU?

SAGITTARIUS

NOV 23 - DEC 20

GEMINI

MAY 21 - JUNE 21

Sagittarians can be optimistic, broad minded and tolerant. They can also be philosophical at times. Very moralistic, they possess sound judgment and are sincere with a lot of scruples. But on the other hand they can be radical, overly optimistic, noisy, irresponsible, careless and tactless.

This sign never seems to grow up. They’ll stay young at heart. Very changeable and restless, they are extremely talkative and seemingly have a split personality. They can get out of a difficult situation by talking. They seem to have a flair for languages and should make good reporters or television comperes.

CAPRICORN

CANCER

DEC 21 - JAN 19

JUNE 22 - JULY 22

Capricorns are dependable, cautious, ambitious and determined. They possess a great sense of humour and are patient and persevering. On the negative side there is only black and white, no shades in between. They can also be pessimistic, conservative and sometimes a bit of a wet blanket.

A strong imagination, kind and sensitive, Cancerians possess a strong mother hen feeling. Shrewd and a good homemaker, but they can also be over-emotional, over sensitive, moody and indulge in self-pity. They are easily flattered and untidy.

AQUARIUS

LEO

JAN 20 - FEB 19

JULY 23 - AUG 22

They can be an independent and humanitarian person. They are friendly, loyal, idealistic and progressive. They possess inventive minds. On the other hand they can be moody and contrary. They can be tactless at the worst times and quite perverse.

Leo’s can be generous, creative, broad minded, ostentatious and a good organiser. However, in the negative sense, they can also be dogmatic, intolerant, tyrannical, self-opinionated and pompous.

PISCES

VIRGO

FEB 20 - MAR 20

This sign is modest, compassionate, tolerant and understanding. They can also be quite impressionable and easily influenced. They have a tendency to be vague, secretive, scatterbrains, and border on the impractical side, at times.

ARIES

MAR 21 - APR 20

This sign is an impulsive, spur of the moment type. Always trying to prove they are better than others and even trying to improve on their last performance. They seem tireless; they tend to be a bit self-centred and egotistical. They get easily fired up about an idea, but can lose interest very quickly too. Like the ram, they keep butting in. Aries are not very tactful and prone to losing their temper with slow, indecisive people.

TAURUS

APR 21 - MAY 20

Like their element suggests, they are down to earth, practical people who like the comforts of life. They don’t have their head in the clouds. They prefer solid, true friendships and they can be very generous. Taureans have an affinity with the land. They are rather possessive, conservative and dependable. Sometimes they may seem too pleased with themselves.

AUG 23 - SEPT 23

Discriminating, yet precise is the Virgo. Being exact, neat and tidy obsesses them. They are modest in their success and can be rather finicky and hard to please. They are born to worry.

LIBRA

SEPT 24 - OCT 23

They can be charming, like the nice things in life, romantic and refined. Librans can also be a little too idealistic and tactful. They are also indecisive, like flirting, trifling and seesawing through relationships. Others have a great influence on them.

SCORPIO

OCT 24 - NOV 22

Scorpions have strong feelings and are rather emotional. They have a great imagination and sense of purpose. They can be insidious at times and have greatness in sight. They can also be jealous, stubborn, vengeful, secretive and not docile.

This season is all about bright neon colours and having the right lashes will help you pull off this look! When I first caught onto this latest trend, I had to suppress a shudder, but I was pleasantly surprised at the modern twist behind this new craze. So what make up do you put on when you are wearing bright colours? Not much! Let’s face it, the colours are a statement in themselves, however putting on a pair of flirty lashes with a nude lip and neutral eyeshadows will help you pull off this hot new look. The right lashes will make your eyes stand out without getting lost in all the colour. The lashes should be pretty fluttery, quite obviously fake. This was the look for Gucci, Versace and Giorgio Armani in this seasons spring summer launch for 2013. Ease into it and try a half lash, which I find the easiest to apply. Individual lashes are great too if you have the patience. Full strip lashes are the best though, if you can manage them. Tips and Tricks: > Put a small amount of glue along the lash and let it dry slightly. Then, using tweezers, apply them to the centre, first taking care to get them as close to your lash line as possible. > Then attach the sides using your tweezers. Press together your natural lashes with the falsies to help blend them together. > Put your eyeliner on before the lashes, then after they are dry (takes a minute) make sure the lashes blend by going over your eyeliner again. Have fun and experiment! Rachelle Barrett, servicing Mackay and The Whitsundays

for the girls WELCOME TO THE FIRST EVER CORE MAKEOVER. THIS MONTH WE SENT TALITHA TO J&R HAIR DESIGNERS TO UNDERGO AN EXTREME MAKEOVER! Talitha came to us with long, curly hair that had had its fair share of colouring over time. It was decided to give Talitha a more modern and sophisticated style that suited her job!! We wanted a versatile style that could be worn curly or straight and was relatively low maintenance on a day to day basis. STYLE CUT: We decided to remove a lot of the length in favour of a shoulder length textured style, that would look awesome curly or straight or in between. COLOUR:

AFTER BEFORE

For something a little different we opted for a darker plum perimeter to frame Talitha’s face and then went to a cool red tone to veil over the fringe and the rest of her hair. To break up the colour through the top area we sliced through very fine pieces of copper and vibrant red to offer a little more texture to the style. MAINTENANCE: To keep Talitha’s style fresh we recommend re-styling every 5 - 6 weeks and also refreshing the colour every 5 - 6 weeks to keep its vibrancy. To also help to keep the vibrancy with colour, we recommend using a colour safe home hair care. Talitha, as part of her makeover, was recommended and received Schwarzkopf BC Colour Freeze Shampoo, Conditioner, Coloured Ends and styling products Osis Twin Curls. Talitha is rapped with her new look. If you want to be next month’s makeover then flick us an email with your picture to: makemeover@corelife.com.au Be sure to check out the January issue of CORE Life next month to see who gets made over and how it looks...it could be you!

WHILE NO ONE HAS YET FOUND THE ELIXIR OF ETERNAL YOUTH, PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO STAY LOOKING YOUNGER IF THEY CHOOSE TO.

SOLUTIONS FOR GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP We’ve all had a bad night’s sleep or a day where we have run on little to no sleep at all. Trying to function on days like these can be a struggle. Energy is low, irritability is high and it can be hard to concentrate. For some, this is a once in a while occurrence but for surprisingly many, this is an everyday occurrence. At the Whitsunday Health Clinic we help a lot of people with their frustrating sleep issues. Sleep is an essential component to our survival, as important to us as oxygen, food and water. But for some reason so many people ignore their sleeping problems or simply put up with them because they don’t know what else to do about it. You wouldn’t let yourself starve to death, would you? We need good sleep for stress reduction, growth, immunity, memory, rational emotions and healing. Prolonged lack of sleep can increase your risk of the following: • • • • • • •

Cardiovascular disease, heart attack, heart failure High blood pressure Depression Lowered libido, loss of interest in sex Weight gain, difficulty with weight loss Concentration & memory loss Irritability, lack of reason, difficulty with problem solving

Our sleep can be disrupted from a variety of reasons, such as: • • • •

Imbalanced chemicals in the brain Stress/Worry Alcohol or stimulants, such as caffeine Environmental factors e.g. too much light in the room, uncomfortable bed, fresh air flow

Over 5 million people in Australia are currently taking sleeping medication. A study released in 2011 found that 95% of patients who visited their GP regarding sleep issues were prescribed with sleeping pills. But they are not the best answer. They often leave us feeling drowsy, they impair our ability to concentrate and have been showed to increase body weight. And that’s not the worst of it. Recent research has likened the use of sleeping pills to be as damaging to our health as cigarettes! Here at the Whitsunday Health Clinic we have a number of health solutions that we can prescribe to assist you in achieving a good night’s sleep. These products are all natural, so you know they are safe to take and won’t give you any nasty side effects and best of all, they REALLY work! Speaking to a qualified Naturopath is essential in finding the best natural product that will help you get your best night’s sleep yet. 56 www.corelife.com.au

When a person looks at you, they are able to mainly use the appearance of your skin to judge your age. Of course there are other factors but the quality of your skin is the most important one. Skin, like all body parts, ages according to your biological clock. If you are lucky enough to have good skin genes, this helps to slow down the process. Even if you only have average genes (like most of us), there is plenty you can do to help your skin look better. Firstly, it’s a good idea to have some knowledge of what happens to your skin as it gets damaged and ages. We know that 80% of damage is caused by excess sun exposure. The remainder is due to obligatory cell ageing. The message is clear - avoid the sun on your face, neck, décolletage and backs of your hands. SUN DAMAGE AGEING CAUSES: • • • •

Thickening of the outer layer of the skin, which becomes rough. Increasing pigmentation with freckles and blotches. Decrease in collagen and elastin. Sagging and wrinkle formation in the skin.

The trick is prevention. Limiting sun exposure with slip, slop, slap, cessation of smoking, a good healthy diet with vitamin supplements if needed and exercise, as this increases the blood flow to the skin. Next, it is important to have a good home skincare regimen. I consider Jan Marini Skin Care products to be the most all-round scientifically advanced products available. Consider that your daily programme should contain a fat soluble Vitamin C, a non-greasy sun block, a Vitamin A and/or a glycolic and a product from the Age Intervention line. Supplementary procedures that would enhance this regimen would include “lunchtime” peels using Trychlorectic acid. These are more powerful than hydroxy acids, but there is no downtime. Micro-dermabrasion is used to remove the outer, thickened layer of skin, followed by an ultrasonic facial, which drives the products deep into the skin and increases blood flow using ultrasound. There is a large range of wrinkle fillers (which are given by injection), though your own fat is one of the best fillers. Fillers last from three months to semi-permanent, depending on the material used. Another much loved injection is the muscle relaxer that gives such good results for frown lines, crows feet, bunny lines, eyebrow lifting and even lifting of the corners of the mouth. Results usually last three months to start with, but can lengthen out to six months with time. Where necessary, strong chemical peels or laser can be used to beat wrinkles, scars (including acne scars), pigmentations and strong sun damage. These are much more powerful modalities that produce readily noticeable results, with downtime being up to one week.

THE TOP 5 NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2012 WERE: 1. Lose Weight 2. Getting Organized 3. Spend Less, Save More 4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

5. Staying Fit and Healthy

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO MAKING THE POWER OF NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS WORK FOR YOU, AND HELP YOU ACHIEVE HEALTH AND FITNESS SUCCESS IN 2013: MAKE IT MEASURIABLE

MAKE IT PERSONAL

A lot of people forget that a resolution is really just a GOAL. Give it a start and most importantly, give it a measurable finish. Don’t set a goal that has you working forever without actually achieving it. Replace “I want to lose weight” with “I want to lose 10kg by the end of the year” and you have a target you can aim for, hit, and feel the joys of success.

Enlist someone that can help you with good advice, planning, motivation and expertise. Choose someone who isn’t too close to you to be brutally honest, and let them mentor you to success. Your favourite fitness professional at your gym could make a great mentor - it doesn’t have to be personal training (though that would also be a great idea), just a regular conversation to check your progress, plan the next step and keep you on track.

MAKE IT ACHIEVABLE & REALISTIC Unrealistic goals breed failure! Pick a target you can hit – don’t make it too easy of course, but choose a benchmark that you can work towards, hit, and again feel the joys of success. IF YOU ARE FAILING TO PLAN, YOU ARE PLANNING TO FAIL Think about what it will take to achieve your resolution (which is now realistic, measurable and achievable), plan the steps you need to take to get there. Think about and plan for the obstacles. Fitness goals will require exercise, recovery, and nutrition planning. FUEL YOUR MOTIVATION List the reasons why you want to achieve your goal and write them down. Keep the list handy and look at it to stay motivated. These reasons were important enough for you to dedicate a whole year’s resolution, and should have the power to keep you going! SHARE YOUR RESOLUTION Draw on the power of social networking to keep you committed. Share your resolution with all of your Facebook and Twitter friends, and ask them to track your progress and keep an eye on you. Share your successes - every trip to the gym, every personal best, every successful measurement and upload a photo of every awesomely healthy meal. Share your setbacks too. Post your little failures confessing will make you feel better, and your friends and followers will pick you up again.

HUGE RANGE OF DISCOUNT SUPPLEMENTS 58 www.coremag.com.au

FINALLY, and probably the most important tip, is to BE PATIENT. Many of us get a little over-zealous around the New Year. We want to make huge leaps of progress overnight, but real growth is a slow and steady journey. Good luck in 2013! - Corey Whibley, Personal Trainer and owner of Airlie Fitness.

health + fitness The year has nearly come to its’ end, one more month to get through, but what a busy one it is! Christmas parties, shopping, negotiating with families about who’s place for Christmas day... The year’s work on diet and exercise seemingly looks like they are going out the window. But NO, we can do some simple things to have a little bit of balance in our festive time to keep that energy rolling in all the way to New Year, not to mention keep the skin glowing and hold the waistline at bay. How, I here you ask? Superfoods, the foods taking us into 2020 that have a dozen or more unique properties with profiles covering complete proteins, immune-stimulating polysaccharides, liver cleansing betaine, anti-ageing sesquiterpenes, antioxidants, over twenty trace minerals and much, much more.

By the end of the year our brain can feel frizzled, we know the brain is made of 90% fat so we need to feed it very good fat. Coconut oil contains a medium chain fatty acid being 90+ raw saturated fat – a rare and important building block of every cell in the human body. It also supports the immune, thyroid and nervous systems, the skin and provides fast energy. Cold pressed raw offers the most health benefits.

Full of minerals, amino acids, fermented sea and land grass’s enzymes, pre and probiotics, alkalizing to the body, removing and balancing your body after drinks and nibbles, if our body isn’t acidic, it can have more energy.

TO HELP YOU GET THROUGH CHRISTMAS, COME AND ESCAPE FOR TWO HOURS AND HAVE A FOOT SPA AND MASSAGE.

Known as the love fruit in Peru where it originates, great for the obvious but also great for balancing hormones for woman menstrually or when going through menopause or for men’s prostate health. It has too many health benefits to mention here but enough to know it will get you through Christmas feeling sexy with an abundance of energy.

Our bodies do not function this way and never will. If there are bits you are wanting to improve or tone – you need to realize that you can’t “spot reduce” or in other words, target a specific area and exercise like crazy hoping to reduce or completely overhaul the area. Ladies and men often want a toned bottom or legs or abs – so they believe that smashing the area and starvation diets will give them what they want. You need to do a good, balanced, functional whole body weight training programme at a good steady pace, with good posture for starters. Myth - Cardio does not burn fat – I have never smelled it in the gym yet – that is a fallacy and anyone who tells you that does not know basic physiology and biology.

THE MINDSET THESE DAYS IS BIGGER, STRONGER, AND FASTER – EVERYONE WANTS IT YESTERDAY. WITH TECHNOLOGY THESE DAYS EVERYTHING IS GETTING QUICKER TO ACCOMPLISH. REMOTE CONTROLS, MOBILE PHONES, PRESS A BUTTON AND SOMETHING HAPPENS INSTANTANEOUSLY.

Reddening in the face and elevated heart rate is a histamine and stress response – only good if you want to have a heart attack at some point. Example if you were to find a loved one in bed with a heart rate of 180bpm, sweating profusely, red faced, gasping for air – what would you do? Call an ambulance! Symptoms mean the same thing – there is no neurological pathway for exercise and one for when you are sick. So monitor yourself while training. So a whole body weights programme with a great variety of exercises, done with composure (all elite athletes talk about composure and being relaxed while training) and good posture, eat clean, drink water, and have some damn fun is the best way to live your life and look and feel your best. health +fitness RECENTLY HI ENERGY RAN AN INTRODUCTORY AFTERNOON TO YOGA AND FITNESS DURING PREGNANCY. Hi Energy owner and Yoga instructor, Michael Hodgkinson, said that in recent times he has seen an increasing number of pregnant ladies attending his classes, and given the amount of interest it was inevitable that a program needed to be designed for mums-to-be. The afternoon was very popular and was enjoyed by the 22 people in attendance. “This has given us a lot of confidence to move ahead with a pregnancy-based class format in the New Year,” Michael said. Ladies are realising the benefits of staying healthy, fit and relaxed during their pregnancy, but there is a big information gap as to what’s safe and what’s not. Whether itis weight training, aerobics or Yoga, pregnant ladies must appreciate their own limitation and always put the health of the baby first. During pregnancy, the body releases the hormone ‘relaxin’. This hormone makes the tendons and ligaments more pliable to accommodate the baby and, at the same time, make the body more susceptible to injury. So with mindful modifications, mums-to-be can enjoy exercise right through the pregnancy. Yoga + pregnancy has some additional benefits, which include: •

Relieving fluid retention

Strengthening the abdomen and back muscles

Relieving tension fatigue, aches and pain

Awesome relaxation

So if you are already pregnant or planning to be, then please call Michael at Hi Energy on 4953 1133 to register your interest in starting a class in the new year.

Q: What attracted you to the role?

Q: What was your career path to your current role?

A: I was drawn to the challenge and wanted to be a part of a large, diverse service operation.

A: I first started out as an apprentice diesel fitter with the former TNT Komatsu forklifts. From there
I had various roles with companies like Scania/Volvo, Westrac, Roche Bros and Zinifex. Scania is a Swedish automotive industry manufacturer of commercial vehicles, Roche Bros is an Australian mining and civil engineering contractor and Westrac is a Caterpillar equipment dealer in WA.

I started with Hastings Deering five years ago as a Product Support Rep in a fly in, fly out role in Townsville. After that I moved to Moranbah and had a role as a resident Product Support Rep. I eventually moved into the Service Support Manager position at Hastings Park Mackay. Q: Congratulations on winning the 2012 MAIN Industry Young Leaders Award. Who nominated you and why? A: Thanks, it was great to win. Brendan Webb, the Area Service Manager, nominated me. I guess it was because he saw my potential as a future leader. In my role, I’ve achieved new efficiencies and improved relationships and this award recognises that. Q: How do you relax after a long day of work? A: I like to go home and spend quality time with my wife and kids. They help to keep things in perspective and remind me of what’s most important in life.
