THE CANELAND CENTRAL FACE OF THE RACES RACE DAY
JULIA STONE Julia Stone needs little introduction! After blitzing Australia and the world with brother Angus, she’s now touring with a new solo album and show.
Love the races? Then don’t miss out on your opportunity to officially represent the Mackay Turf Club as Mackay’s racing ambassador!
Her beautiful and haunting vocals have earned her a strong international reputation and following. In May this year, Julia released her second solo album By The Horns and announced a national tour to promote it. Triple J say the album is “emotionally fraught, stunningly beautiful, chilling and evocative…[it] will give you goosebumps”. She’s sold out around the world, (London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, LA, New York and more!) Don’t miss her in Cairns.
Together with the Turf Club’s fashion partner Caneland Central, the search will be on throughout August and September for Mackay’s face of racing. This exciting new initiative is sure to be one of the top social events of the year, with final contestants taking to the stage at the Caneland Central Face of the Races Race Day on Saturday September 22, 2012. One lucky winner will walk away with thousands of dollars in prizes and the high profile task of representing the MTC for the next year in racing, fashion & events.

A LITTLE HISTORY... In the spirit of our Pub Feature, we thought we’d educate you on some of the historical pubs around the place. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come!
Located in Wood St, the original was built in 1882 and known as the Belmore Arms. The hotel was a well-known site for Barney McGuire’s private zoo and museum. The original building was demolished on 1938 to make way for present McGuire’s hotel. The hotel name was again changed to CBD Hotel in 2010.
Built as a two-storey hotel around 1883, it is one of the many hotels to spring up around Mackay during the sugar boom of the 1880s.
The first hotel was originally a two-storey wooden building. Another hotel was built in the late 1930s.
Originally known as The Gympie Hotel, it was virtually destroyed in the big cyclone of 1918 and was rebuilt and renamed The Austral on 19 February 1923.
This hotel was designed by local architect Harold Vivian Marsh Brown and stayed in the Day family until it was sold for £14,000 in September 1949.
Located at the start of the Forgan Smith Bridge, the current building was built in 1937. It was constructed to replace the former Tattersall’s Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1936. Known by locals as The Spotted Dick Bar, the hotel was closed in mid 1990’s. It operated as a bar for a number of years before being renamed and operated as the Ambassador Hotel in the mid 2000’s. The Ambassador is now considered one of the leading starter’s bar in Mackay.

The town’s first pub, Bush Inn was erected in 1856 on the site of the current Criterion Hotel. After a few years of operation, there was a long period of inactivity until Leah Johnson bought the hotel. It was then demolished then reopened as the Commercial Hotel and Chambers in 1897. Johnson, alongside her new hotel became a 12 • www.coremag.com.au
local icon, employing a manager to drive her to and from the hotel each day in a hooded sulky drawn by a stunning white horse. Talk about pampered princess! In the early 1970s, the Grieve family took over the hotel and then sold it again a decade later. The current owner purchased the site in October 2005 and re-opened it as the Heritage Hotel.

Well it’s that time of year again, the festival we have all been waiting for is finally here, OKTOBERFEST! The worlds largest festival saw its beginnings in Munich, Germany in 1810 as the wedding festival of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. It’s grown over the last 202 years into a spectacular event celebrating all things Bavarian... BEER (oh, and some other stuff as well)! Yes the world famous Bavarian festival kicks off this month on the 22nd and runs through to the 7th of October featuring the finest in German brewing, culture, clothing, beer, frankfurter, wine, beer, baking, babes in dirndls (our favourite blouse, bodice and that oh so short and full skirt) and yes we can’t forget beer, beer and more beer. This is however not Germany’s 202nd festival as it was cancelled from time to time due to a few inter-country “disagreements.” Nothing a few steins of frothy cold brew wouldn’t fix, and I think us Aussies have a bit of catching up to do on our German comrades as the 2010 festival in Munich (marking 200 years since its first festive keg was tapped) saw over 7.1 MILLION litres of amber goodness consumed, not to mention almost a million bratwurst! That’s a lot of sausage. Now I know what your thinking, six and a half million people drinking that much beer means a lot of police handing out a lot of public urination violations right? Wrong. The Munich festival provides a relieving 850 metres of urinals and almost a thousand toilet seats, the cleaning of which would wipe the smile of even our own ‘Kenny’s’ face.
Nobody raises a glass until the mayor says so! Since 1950 the festival has only started after the mayor shouts “O’zapht is!” and offers the first mug to the MinisterPresident of Bavaria.

Oktoberfest in Munich only offers beer brewed inside the Munich city limits. The beer in festival time is on average 1% stronger than normal german beers.
In 2010, over 500 crutches were brought in to the lost and found, not surprising considering after a few steins its hard enough to operate your eyelids let alone a set of crutches!
Oktoberfest is a family event, they even have a lost and found children office on site. Seems losing your children is a common side effect from drinking beer. So we suggest a sitter this year!

Since the release of his sophomore album The Chase in late 2010, Melbourne emcee ILLY has become one of the most prominent hip-hop acts in the country. And his journey is showing no signs of slowing down. The Chase received glowing reviews from all corners (“…one of the country’s best hip-hop releases” – J-Mag) and catapulted ILLY to the forefront of the greater Australian music community. The album premiered as Triple j’s feature album the, week of it’s release. Lead single ‘It Can Wait’ (feat. Owl Eyes) took music lovers by storm, being voted in at #29 in the station’s Hottest 100 count for 2010. Proving that all the rave reviews were no exaggeration, ILLY took the album on the road with a huge 21-date national tour, with ARIA Award Winning DJ/Producer M-Phazes at his side. The Chase Tour showcased ILLY’s impressive live show to venues packed full of fanatic fans (“…his sold out gig delivered everything expected, and just a little more” – Junior Magazine). The new single, and title track from the album, ‘The Chase’ is currently creating a stir at radio and setting the scene for ILLY’s continuing rise to the top.

Joe’s Bar at Airlie Beach welcomed new ownership last month with local Steve Burton taking over. CORE took the chance to catch up with Steve about what he’s changed and where the bar is heading. Wiping the bar clean, Steve hired a “Gordon Ramsey” in the form of Melbourne’s very own hotel and restaurant consultant John Cincotta to come up and reform the outfit and menu, sprucing up the establishment to a crystal clean and welcoming environment. With the old bar resurrected into a new “locals watering hole”, even the name will be changing in the near future with the local radio station Airlie’s SeaFM 92.3 running a competition for its new name, with the winner landing themselves a party for six at the newly named restaurant. “We’re here to support the local community, offering a menu and environment that will suit our everyday families and singles that want a great place to meet, drink and catch up,” Steve says. With a function room out back perfect for meetings and service club catch ups, the bar itself is also family friendly with those perfect light and simple snack meals for after a days work or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
We BURN THE BILL for One Lucky Table every Thursday Night between 7-9pm. You could Win and Dine for FREE!*
Keeping the best pizzas in town, the new menu is simply mouthwatering with all the produce sourced from local suppliers and the seafood fresh off the Airlie boats. Dishes from chicken and fresh calamari tubes to Angus beef burgers, battered fish and fries, coconut chilli prawns to our very own Aussie favorite; bangers and mash. The prices are more then reasonable and the food sensational. Local chef Tim Attwood has picked up some extra tricks from their “Melbourne Ramsey” with food techniques you would usually need to travel to your nearest big city to taste. Opening from 4pm on weekdays and 3pm to midnight on weekends; Steve says his new restaurant will always be based on a local get-together spot where you would go to enjoy yourself in a great atmosphere. With its new philosophies and doors only anew, keep your eyes open and ‘watch this space’ as the new owner is planning some fun nights ahead for locals including jazz Sunday sessions, jag a joker nights, membership draws and even classic date night for those who want to check the kiddies in with a sitter

and have a special night out. Best-on-the-ground nights will also be in operation soon with the local sports clubs of all kinds able to come in for an on-thehouse treat for their efforts. “Our own community and locals are our prime interest, we want to support everything and everyone local from our clubs, sportsmen and businesses.” But lets not stray to far from the subject, basically if you want that perfect place to eat fantastic food and enjoy a quiet catch up with friends and family, Joe’s Bar (soon to be renamed) is the place to meet!

Ever made plans for a date, night out with the boys or a family do and aren’t sure where to go? CORE susses out the best spots to take your lady, mates and family! Your Lady
Your family
Now, we all know that the ladies don’t appreciate having to walk over crushed nuts to get to the bar and have to deal with smelly toilets on a date, so it’s best to take her somewhere classy!
With a massive shaded outdoor kids area, it’ll keep them entertained for hours, while Mum and Dad watch on in air-conditioned comfort!
Your mates Whatever you’re into, we have a pub for you! If you’re keen for embarrassing yourself with Karaoke, then head to Gordi’s in Mackay.
Not your cup of tea? Check out Down Under Bar or Magnums in Airlie Beach and get on it with the boys! If you have taste for beer, then you can’t go past Denman’s Beer Café. With over 500 beers to choose from, you’ll be in for a treat!
Beer Pong is played in teams, with each team beginning with a number of cups filled with beer on their side of the table. The object is to land your pingpong ball in one of the opposing team’s cups. They must drink from their cup when you score.
Flip a coin and while it’s in the air, call heads or tails. If you guess right, pass the coin to your right. If you guess wrong, pass the coin to your left and prepare to strip or drink! If you choose right, you can choose to flip again. Another successful guess lets you pass the coin to anyone of your choosing! A wrong guess has normal consequences – strip or drink! Cross your fingers you play with some women, or it may be awkward…
When it starts getting late in the night and everyone’s pretty toasted, many drinking games become too challenging and people just stop giving a sh*t. This is why You, Chug, was invented. The rules are simple, at the beginning it is decided who has ‘The Power of Chug’. ‘The Power of Chug’ allows you to command any other player to chug their drink at any time. In chugging, this player also gains ‘The Power of Chug’. Games that span days and weeks are the most fun! 20 • www.coremag.com.au
Fathers Day!
After a quiet place to enjoy a meal with the Family? Known as ‘The Family Tavern’, you can’t go past The Jubilee Tavern, Jubilee Pocket.
ZeBar on Victoria St, Mackay is a good option to go with. With fruity cocktails and pumping beats, it’s a safe bet and will keep you out of the doghouse.
One of the best-known drinking games, Beer Pong is messy by nature.
Make a day out of it and Celebrate this
BS’s simple rules make it an ideal drinking game. In BS, you have to discard one or more cards of the same suit face down each round, and declare how many you have put down. If another player doubts your claim, they can declare BS. If they’re right, you drink, if they’re wrong, they drink. It’s that simple!
It’s like Truth or Dare, but with less time spent wearing someone else’s underwear… ‘Never Have I Ever’ is a fun way to learn some dirty secrets about your friends – especially after a few bevvies! To play, all you’ve gotta do is name a naughty or sexual act. Whoever has done it raises their hand. Whoever hasn’t, has to drink!

The sounder was showing plenty of bait holding at 30 metres with some big fish marks all around it. We had trolled this spot a couple of times with surface lures and baits with little success so it was time to unleash the secret weapon. A gang rigged garfish on a wog head was attached to the downrigger and deployed down to 20 metres for another run past our mark. It was instant - the rod tip bounced and then came tight and we now had a big Spanish Mackerel on! Downrigging is, in basic terms, a method of trolling deep baits or lures when fish are holding deep in the water column. Methods described here work for me and are by no means the rules, but, it will definitely help you catch more fish when things are tough on the surface. Most fishermen and women probably believe that Spanish Mackerel are surface feeders hence most lures on the market are targeting fishing the top 5 metres of the water column with the odd deeper variety. THESE LURES CATCH A LOT OF FISH BUT ARE THEY FISHING THE RIGHT AREA FOR MOST OF THE TIME? From my experience, Spanish Mackerel spend the majority of their time mid water or even deeper and are only coming to the surface to feed at certain times in the tide. This surface feeding time may vary from location to location but is usually at the start or towards the end of the tide run. During the main part of the tide, the bait is usually pushed deeper around the pressure points of the reef, hence the Mackerel and other predators follow. Downriggers come in many shapes and sizes and are used all over the world targeting other fish species. They are usually mounted on the gunnel of your boat towards the back so the lead weight that is attached can hang over the back of the boat and have no chance of hitting the hull, motor, or anything else attached to the boat. They usually hold around 200 metres of Multistrand Wire or Heavy Braid or Dacron. The weight that 24 • www.coremag.com.au
is attached to the main line is usually a lump of lead shaped like a cannonball hence the name the, Downrigger Bomb! Most quality downriggers have an accurate counter so you can know how many metres or feet of cable have been paid out. BEST BAITS FOR DOWNRIGGING: There are many types of bait that you can use for Downrigging but my favourite is the Garfish. We also have a lot of success with medium to large Mullet and definitely, if you are fishing the inner island and reefs, then Ribbonfish or Wolf Herring is the number 1 bait. I usually swim my bait or lure out about 10 metres then attach a rubber band to the line. A lot of downriggers come with release clips in which you attached the rubber band too, but I tend to just have a short length of venetian blind cord attached to the rear of the bomb which I then attach to my rubber band with a simple slip not.
DEPTHS TO FISH WITH A DOWNRIGGER: I find that by watching your sounder and seeing where the bait is holding is your best indication of where you need to deploy your bait. A general rule I always use is to start at 20 metres then work from there. Once hooked up: This is the exciting part your downrigger bait has just been eaten and everything has come up tight and the line is pouring off the reel. Don’t wind in your other surface lures or baits yet as you may get a double, triple or even quad hook ups as his mates come to the surface following the hooked fish. Then you will have some fun! But in all the chaos and mayhem, don’t forget to wind up the downrigger bomb, which will be sitting at depth. They can easily get snagged if you drift in on the reef whilst fighting a fish! Using a downrigger for the first few times can be quite tricky and it is best if there are two of you so one can deploy the bomb and the other control the rod with the line feeding out. Once you get the hang of it you can do it solo, and one thing is for sure, you will catch more Mackerel!

With a car collection that most of us would only ever dream of, it would be fair to say that Emerald local Darryl is living the dream. Darryl, who runs a house removal company in Emerald, and is an avid car collector, was kind enough to share some of his collection with CORE Magazine this month. When we spoke with Darryl, the first question was a simple one, how many cars do you have in your collection – “I’ve got about 15 nice cars, and a few others around the place too”. Darryl tells us that his first car was a Model T that he wishes he still had today. So what is his favourite, you ask? Well, he explains that he doesn’t really have a favourite, he likes them all, but he does have a GT Falcon that he has had for 20 years, and then theres the GTHO. Yes, Darryl is the proud owner of a 1971 Ford Falcon XY GTHO Phase III. The GTHO Phase III, often referred to as a HO, a GTHO or simply a Phase III, is arguable the holy grail of Aussie muscle cars. At the time, the GTHO was the fastest 4 door production car in the world, and in 1971 Allan Moffat won the Bathurst 500 in one. The GTHO was basically the race version of the GT, with the HO coming from “Handling Option”, as it included bigger brakes with a stiffer suspension set up, a choice of 3 differential options and an optional closeratio gearbox, making the GTHO very close to the actual race car. The GTHO’s ran a heavily modified 351 Cleveland V8 with a Holly 780
4 - barrel carburettor sitting proudly on top pushing out approximately 380 brake horsepower (283kW), although at the time it was advertised at 300hp (224kW). Butting up to the Cleveland was a 4 speed top-loader, (and as mentioned earlier, had a close ratio option) and finally delivering it to the ground was a 9inch Traction Lock differential. In 1971, Ford made 300 GTHO’s, and they sold new for $5 300, which in comparison, was more than double the price of a standard Falcon which retailed for $2,500. So as you can imagine being a 41 year old Aussie muscle car, and only having 300 made (a lot of which haven’t survived) they are going to fetch a fair price. You might remember Darryl’s GTHO, because when he purchased it in 2007 at auction from Bonhams & Goodmans, it set a new record for an Australian muscle car, going for $680,000. In the months following Darryl’s purchase, a second GTHO was also auctioned for $750, 000, both of which are a fair jump from the original $5,300 you would have paid if you were lucky enough to get one off the show room floor. Darryl is no stranger to Fords including GTHO’s, as he completed a mechanic apprenticeship at a Ford dealer in Emerald, so you would be

fair to say he grew up working on these cars, and even laughs admitting that it shows his age. But let’s face it, if anyone deserves to own one of these Aussie classics it has to be him.
(which is just a little over 3 times the show room price) and with all the money going to the Leukemia Foundation, it set a new record for the highest bid on the Australian eBay site.
On top of the other Fords Darryl owns, he also has two Mini Mokes, with BMC license plates so close to each other you couldn’t have planned it better if you tried. The BMC, referring to the British Motor Corporation, manufactured the Mini Moke from 1964 to 1993.
Now even more interestingly Darryl has also tracked down and purchased the very first VZ Monaro manufactured to add to his collection, thus meaning he has the first and the last of the third generation Holden Monaro’s.
There are two other cars in Darryl’s collection that will also attract your attention. While they aren’t anywhere near as old as the GTHO, they’re just as interesting in story. In 2006 Darryl purchased the last ever VZ Monaro CV8 to roll off the production line. What makes it even more interesting is that he purchased it off eBay. Yes, the very last Holden CV8 Monaro to be produced was sold on eBay, for a cool $188, 355.55,
Darryl explains that he never drives the cars in the collection, but he does do the car show circuits with them. Recently he’s taken them to Charters Towers, Townsville and Maroochydore. He is off to an all Ford show in NSW soon, and then hopes to take the GTHO to the GT National at Bathurst next year, adding that he’ll find out what she goes like then.

There’s wheelies, stoppies, high chairs, spreaders, stand-ups, elevators, rolling burnouts, chainsaws, acid drops and the list goes on. So if you still have no idea what I’m talking about, sit back and relax while I take you on a ride of what is known as Stunt Biking. It can be said that inside every group of motorbike riders there are the odd few who are just a little crazier than the rest, the odd few who enjoy pushing the limits just a little bit more, the adrenalin junkies who love to have fun on two wheels, and, sometimes just one. Now let me be very clear about this, CORE Magazine in no way condones any of the actions discussed in the article to take place on the streets, and we can guarantee the guys we catch up with have a private facility to practise all of these weird and wonderful tricks. So what is stunt biking? Well, put quite simply, motorcycle stunt riding, or simply, stunt riding/biking, is a motorcycle sport made up of performing “stunts” often involving acrobatic manoeuvring of the bike and rider. Think back to when you were a kid, and you would wheelie your push bike. Now think of all the other tricks you may have tried to perform. Then skip forward a few years (a few more for some of us) and try to imagine doing these tricks on a sports bike, and you’ve pretty much got stunt biking. Most stunters will use a 600cc sports bike with a few modifications. A 600 is lighter and smaller, making it easier to throw around, while still having enough herbs to pop a wheelie easily enough. One of the first modifications you’ll see on a stunt bike is the addition of a rear brake leave to the handlebars. This allows the rider to apply the rear brake without needing his foot to be on the pedal, because it’s the rear brake that allows you to control a wheelie and stop from over balancing and flipping. Other modifications usually include a short pull clutch leaver to allow for 1 finger application ensuring the rider is able to retain a firm hold of the bars while popping the clutch to start a wheelie. Once you start to look at stunting it will become quickly evident the first thing one must learn to master is a wheelie, as most of the tricks in some way or another revolve around this. The addition of a crash cage, or crash bars, is also very common. A crash cage is basically a couple of bars that protect the motor and frame from hitting the ground in the event of a crash, trust me when I say this, no matter how good you are, you will 30 • www.coremag.com.au
crash, everyone does. However, the saving grace is that most crashes are at low speed, resulting in less severe injuries. The list of common modifications goes on to include: 12 o’clock bars – a bar that protrudes behind the seat to allow the rider to stop the bike at “12 o’clock” (vertical), and a rear foot hole in the passenger seat to allow the rider to stand while wheeling. Generally, stunters will lower the tyre pressure as this helps with balancing the biker in slow manoeuvers, such as slow speed wheelies, and by low, I mean around the 10 to 15 psi mark. At 10 to 15 psi most riders will notice the bike start to wag its tail at speed and cornering, but it’s a sacrifice most stunters will make. A lot of riders will also change the handlebars to a motorbike style to allow for easier use when tricking, and with tricks like stoppies requiring a fair portion of the riders weight to be applied to the bars, this seems like a practical choice. So, the question that remains, and possibly the most common one heard from non-stunters, is simply why? What makes a person decide to learn to stunt, what makes them want to go out and throw their bike at the ground over and over again until they learn to master that one trick? Well it’s not for the money, it costs more than you’d ever make from it. It’s not for fame, most of our best stunt riders names wouldn’t mean anything to you. So it has to be for the love of it, the love of riding, the love of the adrenalin rush you get, and the love of knowing that there is nothing you can’t do on your motorbike. PHOTO: Chris Peachey

The sight of an Australian reptile will send most Aussies running for the hills, but for David and Wendy Williams from Radical Reptiles Training, working with venomous snakes is just another day at the office. Radical Reptiles was established in 2006, primarily as an Entertainment business. David and Wendy have been teaching Reptile Awareness and Safety at various venues, as well as providing extended information sessions to different businesses and Industry Groups. It was glaringly apparent that there was a definite need for an accredited course in this much neglected area of Workplace Health and Safety. Wendy explained that “the ever expanding Mining Industry means that a large number of workers in remote locations mean that more and more people come in contact with reptiles.” In response to Industry requests the Information Session was expanded into a Nationally accredited course, David and Wendy spent 18 months designing and developing a Course that met all Industry requirements. 30976QLD Course in Reptile Awareness and Training was given National Accreditation in October 2011. On completion this course grants successful participants a Statement of Attainment. The course can fit into any Training Package or be a Stand Alone unit. This is the only accredited course of its kind in Australia. “We all have the possibility of running into a reptile in any situation, and not everybody knows the safest way to deal with the situation. David said that while some businesses may have someone licensed to relocate reptiles, this does not licence them to display them and to do so is illegal. Our course includes a live reptile display; this allows participants the opportunity to identify snakes and lizards using identification techniques taught as part of the course.
“There are many benefits to this training being part of your program: Zero Harm – to workers and environment, reptiles are all protected by law, increased productivity, personal responsibility, increased retention rates, risk management, due diligence, duty of care and working safely.”
Not many people would fancy driving across the state with a vehicle loaded with venomous
With the new accreditations in place, David and Wendy Williams are the first to offer this latest component of Work Place Health and Safety.
I was thinking ‘This place is tattoo central’, but I guess it comes with the look. You do come to expect it - it’s like anything that’s different really. With your love of all things Q ink are you looking to make a career out of it? No not at all… well not A just yet [laughs]. I’m really just cruising at the moment. I’m loving everything so much how it is right now, my friends, my job, it’s all great. I’m not looking for anything in particular just now, I’ll see what the future brings. Right now I’m just enjoying the art form.
Q
So what do you get up to outside of work?
I’m just loving being the A age that I am, doing all the things 19-year olds do. I go skating and cruising around, I try to go to as many music festivals as I can. I also spend a lot of time just creating things, I don’t just stick to paint and pencils, and I also craft a lot and
just make things really. Love it. So there’s still plenty of Q canvas available for some more inking? Are you planning for more? Yes definitely! Though I’m A trying to slow it down now as there’s so much time left in life and I don’t want to just fill it all out quickly and leave no room for anything else as I get older. I’m going to really start taking my time and perfecting the pieces before they are inked. One last thing, what do you Q say to people who ask the same old thing ‘Yeah they’re great now, but what are you going to do when you’re old?’ I’m going to be fabulous A and rock my tattoos [laughs]! Just because they are going to age, it doesn’t mean they’ll lose their beauty to me. They’ll just age with me and become pictured memories of moments in my life. I’ll always love them.

Funky hair, pint sized and totally inked out, local Mackay gal Amber Conlon has a zest for life and a passionate appreciation for the beautiful art she proudly displays on her skin. Only 19 years of age, she already has had her tats featured in Australian Tattoo Magazine, as well as having a few trophies tucked under her belt for the painstaking works of art. CORE catches up with this Sun Beat Now employee to see what’s behind the ink. At 19, you already have a Q bit of a celebrity status amongst the tattooed world, how’d that come about? I’ve been doing tattoo shows A for a while now. I actually started getting tattooed when I was 16, believe it or not, so there’s been a lot of work gone into them, so far about 40 hours all up. That’s an incredible amount Q of ink time! I’m guessing you’re not finished yet? I have two projects ‘under A construction’ at the moment which are my left leg and my right [torso] side, I’m concentrating on designing the rest of my leg at the moment which will feature a pirate theme then I’ll move onto the side. My leg probably has another three hours for shading and colour, then the inside and front filled in. Another ten hours and I think I’ll be done with that section. The peacock is amazing! Q This was featured in Australian Tattoo Magazine; can you tell us a bit about it? A
I’ve won two trophies for it in local tattoo shows, 1st

place in 2011 and 2nd place in 2010. The colours are just beautiful, I chose Mel from Mad Monk to do this piece for me as she has incredible colour technique. The Peacock is quite special as it represents me, my youth and my boldness and individuality. All of my tats are ‘moments in time’ and my peacock represents now. You also recently competed Q in Inked Beauties, a tattooed model competition, how’d that go? I really stepped out of my A comfort zone for that, it was a statewide competition, where I actually came second so that was really cool. I got a paid flight to compete in the next round but had to work so I didn’t end up going which was OK for me as I received some pretty amazing prizes, a designer bikini and a bunch of other crazy stuff. You’re also a really Q awesome artist; do you design your own tats? No, not really. I design the A concept but I let the artist create their own interpretation of
the piece, but I have designed a few for some friends, not for cash or anything, I just enjoy doing it. Looking around, Mackay Q is a more diverse region of ‘individual display’, but what’s it like from your side being a part of the tattoo culture? I find the tattoo scene can A be really superficial sometimes, but saying that, there are a lot of people here that do appreciate it for the art form that it is. I do sometimes walk around and get some pretty weird looks but all in all I think it’s becoming more accepted so that’s good to see, but it still has a long way to go. What about outside of Q Mackay, do you find you’re treated differently at all? Not really, but I did go to A the Gold Coast recently and I found that I was getting a lot of looks there which I thought was strange.
Don’t miss the fourth spectacular Coal to Coast Festival on Saturday 8 September 2012, Sarina MAIN STAGE: In 2012, the Coal to Coast Festival main stage will play host to a dedicated tribute to four of the greatest country music legends of all time; Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash & Kris Kristofferson. Together they were legendary, known world-wide, as The Highwaymen. Bruce McCumstie is well-known around Australia for his outstanding performances as “Willie” in his production shows, Luv Ya Willie, Stardust, Waylon, Willie and Me and sell out performances at Crown Casino in Melbourne, Burswood-Perth and other major venues in the Nelson/ Cash tribute Ring of Fire Tour. When Bruce McCumstie walks on stage, you will not only hear but see Willie singing to you, and The Man Willie Nelson Sings Like have been some of the great reviews following his performances. Bruce and Bryen Willems have performed to sell-out audiences for the last three Tamworth Festivals in their up close and personal show Willie & Kris - Songs of Nelson and Kristofferson. Bryen who is an expatriate American from Louisiana, has the accent and laconic sense of humour that personifies Kristofferson to a tee. Audiences love when he introduces Waylon’s “Duke of Hazzard” with where I grew up we thought that series was a documentary!! When putting together the 4 Highwaymen show, Bruce & Bryen invited the very best Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash tribute singers they knew to join the crew. Rob Wilson, as Waylon Jennings, is as close as you will get to seeing Ol’ Hoss again. Rob’s vocals are reminiscent of those Waylon Good ol’ Boys days and he has cultivated a look that will have you believing Waylon has returned to join us. Rob’s deep voice and dedicated performance brings both that Waylon voice and guitar sound back to life. Alan Bowles completes the group as Johnny Cash. Alan has been paying tribute to Johnny Cash throughout Australia with his very successful The Australian Johnny Cash / June Carter Show. Alan has performed and recorded with many national and international recording artists including appearances on TV shows such as Countdown, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, The Great Outdoors and others. This month in Corporate Pathway to the Mines, we caught up with Dean Everson, Area Manager for FSI Mackay and the Bowen Basin, to ask how he got to where he is today and where he’s heading. So Dean, you’re not from Q around here are you? I’m from Brisbane, I A moved up here with FSI about 3 years ago to start the Mackay Branch and I’ve loved every minute of it. I used to holiday in Mackay as a kid, so I’ve always liked it here, although it has changed a lot since then. It’s certainly a lot bigger than it was and is still growing.
Q
Tell us a bit about FSI
FSI was formed in 1991, by A Ross Chidgey and Peter Redman, who still work in the business. We are a leading global supplier of quality Fire Suppression Systems for every application. We work closely with distributors, OEM’s and end users to offer a wide range of solutions for any fire application. I’m guessing you Q started out on the tools, would I be right? Yes, I’m a trade-qualified A mechanic and started out working for the Advanced Performance Centre workshop approximately 12 years ago now. I moved on to start working for FSI about 7 years ago.
Q
Why the change?
I think there is only so long A some people can be a mechanic before they get bored [laughs]. Plus, I was looking for a career that offered growth and potential for both myself and the company I work for. That is one of the best parts of FSI. Everyone in the company has a career growth plan, and when I say everyone I mean from the storeman right through to senior managers. FSI is big on making sure everyone is getting to where they want to be in their careers. That is what really attracted me to them. FSI truly is the best company I’ve ever worked for.
Q
OK, so after leaving the mechanic job, you started with FSI?
40 • www.coremag.com.au
Yes, I started with FSI 7 years A ago in Brisbane, where our head office is located. I started out as a Field Tech, eventually becoming a Field Supervisor, and now I’m the Area Manager for Mackay and the Bowen Basin. During the 7 years I’ve been with FSI, I’ve watched them grow from 12 employees to 70, and when I moved to Mackay to become the Area Manager, we had 3 staff and now we have over 30 in the region. Do you believe starting Q on the tools has given you an advantage, and if so how? I really do. Starting on A the tools gave me a better understanding of how everything worked, as well as what our field technicians go through, plus our client’s needs. Our greatest asset is our staff, and by understanding what they go through I’m better able to help them. At the end of the day happy staff are productive staff, I’m a big believer in giving people responsibility and not micro managing them. We have to be flexible to meet our client’s needs and requirements, and a big part of making sure that happens is the staff. By having a happy work place, we also manage to retain staff, which has always been a problem in this area.
Q
What would you say your business principles would be?
1] Surround yourself with A good people, 2] Do not micro - manage, 3] Be flexible to your clients’ needs, and 4] Create a positive work environment – happy staff are productive staff.
Q
So what can we expect to see next from Dean?
That is a good question! A I’d like to stay in Mackay. I really enjoy it here, and I would like to continue to grow within FSI, I’d like to be in a manager’s role with a larger geographical area.
PHOTOS: Caroline Everson
FSI – Fire & Safety Industries are a leading global supplier of quality fire suppression systems. FSI have grown substantially over the past decade, and the area manager for Mackay and the Bowen Basin, Dean Everson, is working to ensure this growth continues.
What are the chances of 3 kids who grew up in the same court all becoming pro golfers? Or perhaps even the chances of 6 kids who all played together regularly as part of the same coaching program all turning pro? You would have to say very slim at the least, but that is exactly what Kane Nusteling told us when CORE Magazine caught up with him this month to welcome him to the Whitsundays. Kane has recently taken on the Club Professional role at the Proserpine Golf Club, and moved here with his wife Marjorie, and daughter Taylor who had just celebrated her 7th birthday [Happy Birthday Taylor].
worked at Anglesea’s Golf Club for 10 years, working his way up to Head Professional for the club. In 2011 he returned with his family to Scotland where he worked for a year as the Head Professional at Pitlochry Golf Club.
Kane is a “AAA” Australian PGA Professional, who brings with him a long list of experience from some of the most prestigious golfing locations. Kane tells us that he is excited to be here in the Whitsundays and has big plans for the Club and golf in the region, but let’s start at the beginning.
March 2012 saw Kane accept the Head Professional job at our own Proserpine Golf Club, and having been over 10 years since the club has had a pro on its staff, you can be sure he was welcomed with open arms. When I asked Kane what made him consider the Whitsundays, he said that firstly he wanted to return home to Australia and also joked that the weather up here is a lot better than in Scotland where in March its -10° and you’re playing in the snow. I guess we forget how spoilt we really are.
Growing up in Geelong, Victoria, Kane was introduced to golf at a little public course at the age of 8 or 9. The course he played at had a great program for coaching kids, which has to explain why 6 out of the group he regularly played with turned professional, 3 of which (including himself) all lived in the same court. Kane goes on to explains that they were all very competitive, and having that mateship only helped to drive them. Reflecting on the time he spent playing golf as a kid, only goes to show the love he has for the sport. After finishing high school, Kane started an apprenticeship at the world renowned Anglesea Golf Club in Victoria. After completing the first year and a half of his apprenticeship, Kane decided he wanted to travel, so taking a break from the apprenticeship he left for Scotland with a backpack and set of clubs. Having his heart set on going to St Andrews Links, widely regarded as the “home of golf”, and one of the oldest courses in the world. Upon arriving at St Andrews Kane tells us he was lucky enough to get a game. He played with 3 professionals, and over a beer after the game one of the pro’s offered him a job, which he happily accepted, staying for 4 years. Returning to Australia he completed his apprenticeship and 42 • www.coremag.com.au
Kane goes on to say that the profile of golf in not only the Whitsundays, but North QLD has been somewhat lacking over the past few years, and he looks forward to helping to grow it in the coming years.
Kane is currently in discussions with the Australian PGA about hosting a Pro-Am in 2013 at the Whitsunday Golf Club, so make sure you watch this space for more details on that one. So what goes into being a Professional Golfer? Well it’s not all about the touring circuit, Kane explains he has done the tour, but the Club Professional was more what he was after. He tells that as a kid, from the age of 9 to about 12 he wanted to be a Pro and do the full tour circuits, but as he grew that shifted slightly to being a Club Professional. Kane’s love of golf can easily be seen with his coaching, and it would be impossible to calculate the number of people he has coached. He also
provides a free coaching for kids every Tuesday and Friday afternoon between 3:30 and 4:30 at the Proserpine Club. WHAT’S NEXT FOR KANE? Well he has clearly set his targets on growing the sport in the region and North QLD. You can expect to see him continuing to introduce kids to golf, with his plan to get every primary school student in the region to experience golf in some form as part of their schooling. He is also working to get a Pro-Am in 2013 at the Proserpine Club, and on top of all of that he is looking forward to getting out on the green with the fellow members of the Proserpine Golf Club.
So if you haven’t already met Kane, or you would like any information of the coaching services, including the free clinics for kids, drop in and see him at the Pro Shop, or give the shop a call on 07 4945 1337
Most people may be aware of the good contributions their local Rotary Club makes to their community, but for Emerald residents the contributions have come in the form of a $1.5 Million park these locals can enjoy. Conceived four years ago by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Emerald, the main focus for the idea was the townships children and adolescents, says club President Steven Taylor. “The main concept was the cycle training track for little children to create safety and awareness by learning the rules of the road while learning to ride their bikes, the park also includes an international standard BMX track for the older children, practice basketball courts, single player tennis practice area as well as free electronic BBQ facilities for families.” Located at the northern end of Opal street, the childrens training area has cut no corners when including all possible road scenarios such as rounda-bouts, all your standard road signs and a recently installed working traffic light intersection. Having been a part of Rotary for 12 years, Steve has had the pleasure of seeing Rotary International declare India a Polio free nation as of 13th January this year. “It’s a very proud moment to be apart of a club that not only participates in a worldwide fight to eliminate Polio, but also concentrate on benefiting your own community in such a way.” Built with the assistance of the Local, State and Federal government, the Emerald Sunrise Rotary Club has spent years fundraising the much needed cash to have the park built bit by bit to the almost complete stage it is currently.
“The support from all levels of government who have helped aid the project have been great and extremely appreciated, but the fundraising efforts were vital to it’s construction.” 44 • www.coremag.com.au
“We’ve had a few fundraising events throughout the years to achieve the adequate funds, last year we raffled a car which was successful, having the park be a working progress rather than set a completion date makes the process a little easier but of course we’d like it to be sooner then later.” “The last remaining piece to completion is the Sunrise Rotary Club house which is still in it’s fundraising stages.” Coming to the Emerald Club’s aid in obtaining a clubhouse, the International standard Choir of Esk is putting on a statewide tour in September to cheer up flood affected areas and will be visiting Emerald on Thursday 27th this month at the Town Hall and will be donating the funds made to the development of the Sunrise Rotary Park. “It’s an incredible to have someone come to your region and donate their time and have no expense charged to help a community.” “This park was developed because of the number of families Emerald has now, there’s so many little-ies here riding and learning to ride on the streets which is so dangerous.” “The Reaction to the park from the community has been great, a lot of families come here for birthday parties since the park is fully fenced and also has bathroom facilities, it’s ideal for families with children of all ages to spend the day in complete safety.” Once the Park sees the construction of the Sunrise Rotary Club House within it’s grounds the local Club will be able to celebrate an official opening and a job well done with members of parliament present enjoying the latest addition to the Emerald community. Also being a member of the Emerald Chamber of Commerce, Steve Taylor says the development in Emerald has been phenomenal with other new additions including international standard Netball and Tennis courts as
well as an Aquatic Centre, the park was nothing less then necessary given the growing number of young families in the area. “I take a lot of pride in how Rotary assists locally and internationally, it’s a great thing to see in our well deserved community.” The Sunrise Rotary Club of Emerald meets every Tuesday morning from 6:30am – 7:50 at Route 66 Motel, Emerald.
Why not head down to the Park this Father’s Day and check it out if you haven’t already.
CORE Magazine – a Men’s Lifestyle Magazine that touches on work and industry, but focuses on the fun side of life, bikes, music, cars, camping, fishing, video games, girls – all the things that run through your mind when you wake up on your day off. And who is responsible for the creation of this mag? Two business chicks, a partnership that started from a first meeting that sparked an idea that is sitting in your hands right now.
Rebecca Atkinson has founded, owned, managed and sold businesses since she was 19 years old throughout Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Rebecca was the original founder of City Life Magazine, which was established in Cairns and grew to cover the Townsville, Mackay and Whitsunday regions. While living in the Whitsundays, it was when covering a staff member’s shift at ASAP Mackay that she thought to take the opportunity of meeting a long-time client – Jody, from redhotblue. Jody Euler opened her first business 15 years ago in her parent’s spare room, a graphic design service that is still known today as redhotblue and which has grown into a full creative agency. Winning multiple awards for management, design and advertising campaigns, Jody has now taken redhotblue a step further by expanding into Townsville and opening an event management division - redevents. But one year ago, she was getting ready for a nice night out to meet a long-time supplier for the first time – Rebecca. Having only “met” over the phone, Rebecca and Jody – and the redhotblue crew – went for dinner and drinks to get to know each other. What ended up happening was entirely unexpected. After some stories, laughs and a few glasses of wine – discussion of a new publication idea came up. A mag that would be specifically tailored to the region – mainly for the boys but with enough lifestyle content that girls could enjoy it also. Two weeks later, Rebecca and Jody decided to head out for dinner again – they knew something was brewing, an entrepreneurial bond that had them sharing the same vision for an exciting new project. That night they decided to form a business partnership, and within four weeks they were full on into market research, focus groups and brand development. In September 2011, the first edition of CORE came out and it has been a whirlwind ever since. With endless ideas and opportunities, the girls discovered early on that they were the yin to the other one’s yang – two very different personalities that complemented each other and created a business partnership that was more fun than work-orientated. Both Rebecca and Jody have a strong passion for the creative, and they have surrounded 46 • www.coremag.com.au
themselves with a team that have the same feeling that they do – that CORE is not just a magazine, it’s a good time! The past 12 months have been anything but dull, including regular long-distance trips, networking functions, launches, interviewing legends in sports and music, going to bizarre locations for zany photo shoots to get the perfect shot, and much more. “It’s been a rollercoaster ride but even with some very long days and both of us being working Mums, I wouldn’t give it up for anything,” Jody said. Rebecca agrees, “We’ve worked around the clock, and drunk countless bottles of wine, to make CORE what it is today – and we’re both very proud of our accomplishments.” The CORE team is a young, vibrant group of talented individuals who will do what needs to be done to make sure they hit deadline with the best mag possible for that month. This amazing team, backed up by the creative energy and business backgrounds of Bec and Jody, has made CORE what it is today – a publication that has hit one year old and is nowhere near finished. The main concept of CORE was always to focus on the reader, and it is this drive – to deliver to the reader what they want to read about – that has seen CORE go from strength to strength. With the circulation recently getting boosted from Bowen, the Whitsundays, Mackay, Sarina, Collinsville, Moranbah and Dysart to expand into Emerald and Blackwater also – there really seems no stopping them. Along with the distribution expansion, the CORE team have also recently had a growth spurt and moved into their new premises on the corner of Shakespeare and Peel Streets in Mackay. With their trademark gnarly designs splashed across the windows – it’s pretty hard to miss. One year on and the publication is still FREE and still growing, and Rebecca and Jody still have a seemingly endless supply of creative ideas and nifty projects to keep CORE focused and entertaining for all. Because that is what CORE was intended to be. Sure it has the obligatory, sensible, business foundation – but mainly it is about loving what you do, enjoying life and, when you find the time, having a damn good read!

Steve Taylor & Partners has over 30 years experience in providing individuals, couples and families with the right strategies to create wealth and change their lives. Having experience in banking and finance, and studied Real Estate Practice, Real Estate Law, Valuation and Management, his company provides the knowledge and keys to obtaining a successful and debt free retirement. Coming to the area in 1982 Q must of ignited quite a different impression from what it is now. What made you want to stay and set up business at the time? Between 1976 and 1982 A my business grew by word of mouth with the majority of my clients being in the mining industry and spread all over Australia. In 1982 I structured some property investments for a senior mining manager with Utah who was based in Brisbane. He in turn asked me to assist some of his senior staff at Moranbah. Shortly after this, BHP purchased Utah’s mine and amalgamated Goonyella and Riverside. When Gordonstone Mine (now Kestrel) was being developed their young management team included some of my clients. Among the many targets they set was to set a record for the best industrial relations. This was the first mine to have only one union – UMFA. The Union asked management to assist their members with “wealth creation” who asked for my assistance. My business in the Central Highlands in general and Emerald in particular grew to the extent that I found myself spending more time in the Central Highlands than at my home in Inverell, NSW. My ex wife decided I must have had several girlfriends since I was here so much of the time, we subsequently divorced and I
have lived in Emerald permanently since. With 2012 marking 30 years Q in the region for you, what have been the main changes in the area you’ve seen? What kind of advantages do you have for seeing the region change over such an extended amount of time? Over the last 30 years A there have been many changes in Emerald and the Central Highlands with Emerald back then being predominantly an agricultural area, ie. each year we have a sunflower festival. When I first visited Tieri from Moranbah I had a V12 Daimler, and it was recommended that I use a hire car for the trip as they were a lot tougher. There was a dirt road to Dysart and only a rough track beside the railway line south to the lagoon and then a variety of unmade tracks through the scrub west to Tieri. After deciding to reside in Emerald permanently I was asked to become President of the Emerald Chamber of Commerce. We were possibly the most successful Chamber of Commerce in QLD with over 400 members and in excess of $100,000 in the bank. One of our main objectives was to improve the quality of health care and hospital facilities. We managed to have the then Premier Anna Bligh and Health Minister Stephen Robinson visit Emerald
and were successful in having local businesses donate funds for badly needed equipment. You’re a member of the Q Rotary club and the CQ Circle and chamber of commerce to name a few (not to mention your past associations), what would you say would be some stand out moments within the communities? One of the standout moments A of my time as President of the Chamber of Commerce was the installation of a $100,000 donated steriliser to the hospital. To install it, a crane had to be used, and a section of the hospital roof removed. As past President of the Rotary Club of Emerald Sunrise, member of the CQUniversity Advisory Committee and now a member of the CQ Circle I have seen our community become one of Queenslands most liveable communities, and I am very proud to call it my home. Setting up business in the Q 80’s and seeing it through to the thriving corporation it is now, what have been your key secrets to success? The main secret to the A success of Steve Taylor & Partners has been an insistence on quality in all aspects from location, building and services, and a true desire to help individuals, couples and families secure their future
and their family’s future. Our main asset is our reputation. What do you think are Q some of the most important factors that the people of regional Queensland are looking for when it comes to using Property Developers? The most important factors A that the people of Regional QLD are looking for when investing in property is someone they can trust, with the expertise to do in a few hours what would take them months to research and put together and in a manner that maximises the efficiency of the funds and time employed. With three decades of Q experience, what’s an important piece of advice you can give to our readers? a) Getting into or out of a A market you are better off being a year too early than a week too late b) When choosing between investments keep it simple! • Ask how much money will you invest up front? • Ask how much will I contribute each week/month? • Ask how much will your investment be worth after 10 years? c) Do not buy and sell but buy and accumulate.

Few things are as irritating as mobile drops outs and network coverage issues. However, like most performance problems this can be solved with a little bit of knowledge and the right device. Your mobile network coverage depends on where you are, the mobile phone you are using and whether it has an external antenna attached. It is essential that you consider these factors when selecting your next mobile phone, especially if you find yourself in an area where you need to really maximise your network coverage. Different mobile phones have different capabilities and how the phone performs on your mobile network depends on both your network coverage and your particular device. If you need to maximise your coverage there are a few things you can look for when purchasing or upgrading your device. LOOK FOR THE BLUE TICK The Blue Tick symbol identifies handsets that are tested and recommended for rural handheld coverage. Every guy wants to be the Alpha male – the one the women flock to & the other blokes revere. Your “alpha” status comes down to one thing – testosterone. We all have it, we all need it – its just some of us have more of it than others. For guys in the gym, the bottom line is the more testosterone you have, the bigger, stronger and leaner you will be. The problem is, how do we get more of it without compromising our health or breaking the law? USP Labs are the world’s leading supplement guys that changed the game with Jack 3D and Oxy Elite. They have been researching this question for years and have come up with their latest game changer: Test Powder. Test Powder promised to be a revolution in test boosting. For the first time ever, it combines several of the only proven testosterone increasing compounds together in one awesome tasting powder. Those of you that know your test boosters will be amazed at the 3 grams of D Aspartic Acid, and 1 gram of Agmatine Sulfate in each serve of Test Powder, in addition to several other compounds that have been proven to increase athletic performance, boost test, strip fat, open up your hormone receptors and regulate catabolism - and there is even an anti estrogen in there! Testing in the US has been getting huge reviews!
USP Labs Test Powder has just been released in Australia and is available at Airlie Fitness.
By the time you read this, KARL BURCHARDT will have already stepped on stage for the first time. Hi Energy caught up with Karl a few weeks out from competition… Karl, your currently five Q weeks out from your first Body Building competition, how are you feeling right now? I’m excited but quite A lethargic. Following a low calorie diet and keeping intensity in all workouts runs your energy levels into the ground. My strength is quite low and my body takes twice as long to recover from my workouts but the results are there, I’m happy with where I am. How long have you been Q training for and when did you decide to take the step into competing? I have been training for ten A years, always with the thought of competing in the back of my mind. I was lucky from the beginning to have the right people around to point me in the right direction. This time last year, I set a goal and made the decision that I would compete in the next ANB comps. I made a 12-month plan and that’s what I have been following. How much has your Q lifestyle changed since deciding to compete and what do you enjoy about the change? Training and eating right has A always been a priority to me but coming into comp, every gram of food and water you consume is important so I cant leave the house without two prepared meals, supplements and water, making spare time minimal. I enjoy the lifestyle, its not just going to the gym, your training and diet follows you 24 hours a day.
Through my diet, protein has A been coming from chicken breast, kangaroo and fish. Sounds good right? Do u know what sixteen weeks of chicken breast tastes like [laughs]? Carbohydrates from sweet potato, brown rice and whole grain oats. Healthy fats from peanut butter, almonds, avocado, fish and flaxseed, plus plenty of greens; asparagus, broccoli, silverbeet. Grape fruit and blueberries. That’s about it. What supplements Q are you presently taking to help you reach your goal? I’m A currently taking a WPI Protein, Casein Protein, Branched Chain Amino Acids drink, AAKG, Better Alanine, Creatine, waxy maize, and a fat burner that contains green tea and caffeine. I use a lot of
supplements all year round. I always ask Michael’s [from Hi Energy] opinion before adding a new sup – he’s very knowledgeable and up to date with what is happening in the supplement industry. Every supplement has its place and it’s about choosing what will fit your personal needs and goals. What does your weekly Q exercise routine consist of? My routine changes every A three or four weeks, at the moment I do cardio five times a week and resistance training five times a week. But you have to listen to your body - if I need more rest I take more rest if I feel I can do more, I do more. Thanks for the insight Karl, good luck with your first comp!
What has been the most Q surprising thing you have learnt on your journey so far? Defiantly the importance of A diet - once your diet is on track everything just clicks. Lets have a closer look Q at the types of meals you are enjoying…

Driving alongside his father and navigator Warren Morton, the two are set to make history this year hoping to take out the Championship as the youngest competitor driving in what may be one of the oldest cars in the race, his 1983 Ford Laser is set to be an official Classic next year. Starting his racing career at 14 years old in 2010, Wayne first honed his skills at the Whitsunday Sporting Car Club competing in and taking out first place at the Junior Khanacross Championships in his Ford Laser that same year and again in 2011. Keeping it in the family, his father Warren is a rally champion for twenty years starting his career in his homeland of South Africa and keeping a love of the sport alive. He also participated in the same Championships winning outright in 2010 and 2011 North Queensland Khanacross Championships. “We are now both presently leading the Central Queensland Championship and the North Queensland Championships for 2012”. “This year, we decided to also take it up to the top level of dirt motor sport and compete in the International Rally of Queensland, but we had to start late in the season as the legal age for competitors is sixteen. It was a mission since Wayne’s birthday was two days before the event started and also the final day for registration.”
The first two legs of the Championship transpired in May and consisted of thirteen stages over three days where Wayne, Warren and their service crew carved through the tracks finishing up in fifteenth position under the much needed sponsorship of WM Thermal Engineering, Battery World Mackay, Jax Quick Fit Mackay and Total Off Road. “We’re grateful to our sponsors, every bit counts and helps Wayne further his career.” With three legs to go in the second half of the year, Wayne is hoping that his talents may be noticed through the course of the Championships and land him the major Sponsorship he needs to start a professional career. “I’m currently doing a school based apprenticeship but once school finishes, I’m hoping I’ll have sponsorship and have a professional career in Rally Cars.” Although Warren happily sits by his son’s side, it’s more of a necessity than a dedicated father and son team, with the laws of the road still applying to Rally Car racing. “We have to display L plates on the car when racing and an open licensed driver must be in the vehicle, but once he no longer needs that, hopefully he can have a navigator around the same age so they both can take the racing career together over the long haul. I can be the father taking photos on the side line cheering him on.”
“He had to take his Learner’s test in the morning of the deadline for registration.”
Right now, your average 16 year old guy might be gaming it up on Battlenet, talking about their alter ego on WOW or spending hours brushing their sturdy emo-Bieber fringe to the left. But not local kid WAYNE MORTON. He is busy preparing himself for the next leg of the Queensland Rally Championship, having competed in the first leg of the race just 2 days after his sixteenth birthday made him the youngest driver in the Championship to date. 60 • www.coremag.com.au

With driving skills that outdo most 40 year old drivers, Wayne finds the funny side to having L plates on his race vehicles. “I should have my log book filled out in no time with the hours I’ve clocked up racing as well as getting to the races and back.” “The other competitors at the Championships laughed thinking that the L plates on my rally car were a joke, they had to ask if that was for real.” Unlike many other sports in our area, practice for these competitions are almost non-existent, and fellow competitors are scarce, making the time in between races a challenge to remain focused, fit and dedicated for a teenager. “I rip around the farm on the motorbikes and buggies as well as work on my rally car to keep busy in between events.” Unfortunately, unlike countries like the UK and South Africa, there aren’t opportunities such as Rally School or other like organisations which help competitors sharpen their skills and enjoy mentorship from top drivers during time off. Lucky for Wayne he has help keeping focussed with the help of his local mentors Keith and Daniel Callinan. “He’s been awesome, he taught me how to left foot brake.” “I’m just hoping that we do really well this year to attract a major sponsor, that way we’ll be able to upgrade to a more competitive motorcar and show what we can really do and make it to the Australian Rally Championships.”
My dream competitive car would be a VW Polo, or a Ford Fiesta, they’re really coming out as awesome rally cars. “It’s really exhilarating racing, I love doing it, and this year during this competition I’m feeling confident.”

There’s a time in the middle of the year where there is an obvious gaming slump. It’s usually a good time to revisit an old favourite or start working your way through that “pile of shame”. I’ve been playing through the Dead Space series in anticipation for Dead Space 3. I had a short hands on recently at the EA offices in Sydney, and besides the door opening mechanism being different, there weren’t really any noticeable gameplay changes to comment on. So what do you do when you find yourself in a gaming slump? Where can you find new content? One often overlooked possibility for the hardcore gamer is the humble mobile phone. Here’s a quick wrap up on some downloadable goodies that will help you kill the time between titles:
Mobile Platform: iOS and Android Rating: PG Developer: GLU Mobile Genre: Action Arcade In order to protect her people from a Zombie invasion, The empress forged her soul with a gate to create a sacred protective entrance to the city. Now in order for the empress to survive, you, (powerful samurai) must recruit warriors, townspeople and soldiers to fight the zombie hordes and prevent them from reaching the gate. It’s a surprisingly challenging and strategic game.
Mobile Platform: iOS and Android Rating: MA15+ Developer: GLU Mobile Genre: Action Arcade Set in a run down post-apocalyptic world, those pesky mutants are causing havoc on the roads. Jump in your trusty old car and run them down, racing though the destroyed city trying to escape with your car (and life) intact. The controls are simple, using tilt to steer and swipe for the sharp corners. 64 • www.coremag.com.au
Mobile Platform: iOS and Android Rating: G Developer: Mojang Genre: Action Arcade Warning: This game will have you playing when you shouldn’t. It seems harmless enough at first – a game where you can build anything you want. At night, monsters come out, and there are an immense amount of discoveries to be made. Although not having all the capabilities of the desktop version, this pocket edition still feeds your need to play. Then you find yourself playing in the middle of the night, hiding under your desk at work, or missing your bus.
Mobile Platform: iOS only at this stage. Android in development. Rating: PG Developer: Wicked Witch for Chillingo Ltd Genre: Arcade I had a good chat to the Aussie developers of Catapult King while I was at E3, and they have totally succeeded in what they set out to do. An accessible, cheeky, fun and bright 3D Angry Birds-esque game that is a lot of fun and simple to play.

Flametree Retreat This unique, irreplaceable and magnificent 12 acre property lies on Flametree creek, running some 10 months per year. It is in a peaceful hollow, completely hidden from all directions and neighbours and yet only 4 kilometres from the main street of Airlie Beach, the central hub in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands where it is nestled between Jubilee Pocket and Shute Harbour. The main house has two large bedrooms within its main walls, an executive office and ensuite and a very generous walk in robe space. A large additional bedroom opens off the covered entrance to the front door adjacent to the garage making a great teen’s semi-get-away. There are two impressive bathrooms within the main house and generous wardrobes and cupboards throughout. There is a very user-friendly laundry and the open-plan kitchen has a massive walk in cold room. There is a fully air-conditioned 4 bedroom, fully self-contained cottage adjacent to the house, with it’s own outdoor lounge area overlooking the creek. The main bedrooms and study are air-conditioned, as is the cottage lounge opening onto all the 4 large bedrooms. Both the cottage and the main house were completely renovated some 10 years ago. The Main house has featured very high raked pine ceilings and this living area extends on to a massive veranda looking down through the gardens over to the creek and the forest beyond. The cottage has a very spacious outdoor living balcony area, which is level to the lawns and gardens down to the edge of the creek. In addition, there is a modern separate bed sitting room lying offset behind the main house with its own quirky private outdoor shower/toilet. The sitting area also has easy access to any bathrooms within the main house. All the water in the main house is solar heated by two separate rooftop units. The cottage has LPG heated water and stove like the main house and cottage kitchen. Some 50m beyond the cottage again is a modern four bay steel shed. This has been set out with storage shelving within two bays and is powered. Between the cottage and sheds are more landscaped areas, partly planted out with fruit trees including oranges, lemons, limes, mangoes, oranges, grapefruit, nut trees and many others, but with very spacious areas for vegetable gardens too. There are numerous and plentiful water supplies from the creek, or any of the five large water tanks. There is generous electric power through an underground cable from the front of the property, also carrying a 10 66 • www.coremag.com.au
Unit 222 - Peppers Coral Coast Resort AIRLIE BEACH - Only $499,000 3 Bedroom / 3 bathroom luxury apartment with fantastic views out to the Coral Sea & Islands.
The surrounding sub tropical rain forest rises on all sides around you with the most magnificent specimen trees exposed to make a absolutely striking view.
This is a great investment and perfect for a long term or holiday rental. You also get 4 weeks a year for your own personal use, so with Tides restaurant and Endota Day Spa literally at your doorstep, so why would you want to holiday anywhere else? Contact Kelli Medford - 0448 601 694
pair telephone connection and ADSL Internet. The Internet is wired throughout the property, as is independent satellite Austar TV. The gardens immediately around the houses comprise some one and a half acres and contain a huge number of interesting and exotic species as well as some that all Australians would recognise. The mature landscaping is absolutely magnificent and there are artificial creeks and ponds throughout the landscaping. There is no swimming pool but the creek has a generous swimming hole. The rates are low as you supply both water and a simple self-caring sewage disposal. There are no EPA regulations within the boundaries and the creek and gardens stretch hundreds of metres beyond the garages upstream, where they meet the Conway National Park. An all-weather concrete driveway through an easement approaches the property via two downstream properties and then over a picturesque wooden bridge of solid construction to the main area of the homes, gardens and out buildings, some 400m in all. We have 500m of pristine creek frontage. We are as alone, unseen and secure as we could wish to be, yet in the very middle of the Whitsundays. This is an incomparable, unique and special place, which is also a refuge and wildlife oasis, having, for example, 13 species of frogs within its bounds, monitors, snakes, bilbies, echidnas, Proserpine rock wallabies and so much more. The dingos and wild boar frequent the forests nearby. The forest birdlife is ever present and sea eagles soar above. The butterflies, dragonflies and moths are magnificent. The forest trees are well displayed and indescribable in variety and massive stature. In all these things you are virtually just a part of the Conway National Park, so little explored as it is. The best thing about this amazing property is that the sellers are serious and ready to make a move.
The house is on the market as Expressions of Interest and all offers are welcome. If you want more information regarding the home or interested in a closer inspection please contact Brad Sabott on 0411 236 507 or Kelli Medford on 0448 601 694.

HENLEY-ON-TODD They may live in the middle of nowhere, but that doesn’t mean the people of Alice Springs can’t appreciate the finer things in life. Modelled on the ever-so-posh Henley Regatta in the UK, this festival of rowing is hampered only by one thing: the Todd River is usually bone dry. This means that all the boats have the bottoms cut out and the participants race along on foot, carrying the shell of a longboat. The prestigious event is split into various categories and is held in September every year.
