PROTECTING YOUR EYES FROM UV DAMAGE The damaging effect of UV radiation on our skin has been proven and accepted for many years. But how many of us give our eyes the same kind of protection that the ‘slip, slop, slap’ campaign has given to our skin? What are the consequences of ignoring sun protection for our eyes? Research has shown that UV radiation is one of the main causes of eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, growths on the eye and cancer. Not everyone realizes that all sunglasses do not provide equal protection from UV radiation. Sunglasses rated 100 per cent UV absorption were once thought to provide maximum protection for our eyes. However, recent research has indicated the peripheral light effect and reflections off the back surface of lenses are factors responsible for causing the most damage. Anytime of the day can potentially cause damage to our eyes. However, effects are worse when the sun is lower in the sky. UV exposure is greatest at 9-11am and 4-6pm and these times are typically when people are less likely to wear sunglasses. “Many people continue to wear the wrong type of sunglasses and this is why people still develop skin cancers around the eyes and suffer eye diseases such as pterygium and cataracts despite wearing sunglasses,” explains Optometrist Corrine Fraser from Eyecare Plus in the Whitsunday Shopping Centre.

FREE UV PROTECTION OFFER To help increase the awareness of irreversible eye damage due to UV, Eyecare Plus practices* are offering UV-Blocker eye protection at no additional charge. Simply present this CORE Life Magazine article to claim this offer. Where UV protection is not already an included feature of the lenses ordered, it will be provided at no additional cost – in addition to any other benefits. (Valid to 31 December, 2015) *Available only at Eyecare Plus practices at Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Ayr and Aitkenvale

“The best eye protection is a pair of wrap sunglasses that block 100 per cent UVA and UVB plus blocking peripheral glare. Unfortunately, wrap frames are not always appropriate due to face shape, personal taste or prescription requirements. In these cases, alternatives such as back surface UV coating can be used and work together with custom-fitted frames to maximize protection.” Eyecare Plus encourages people to come into a practice for professional advice on their eye protection and sunglasses, and to take a look at the range of customised prescription sunglasses, including designer and fashion brands. Protecting your eyes from the sun’s damaging effects is an extremely important part of health care, so don’t overlook it this summer. Children’s eyes are also more susceptible to retinal damage, so proper fitting kid’s sunglasses are extremely important too.

I have been participating in “Ocsober”and, by the time you read this, I would have had my first drink in 31 days. So, where to from here? They say it takes 21 days to change a habit. However, I believe it’s how you spend those 21 days which will ultimately determine if your change will stick or if you will go straight back to your comfortable relationship with Mr “H”! I decided when joining “Ocsober” that I would spend the 31 days changing everything about my daily routine. This included keeping a journal and not the kind of journal you’re thinking of. I was given it as a gift for my birthday and, for those of you who don’t have time for a journal, you need to get your hands on the “5min journal!” By taking 5mins to complete a couple of simple questions, I discovered so much about my mindset and how much easier I found change when I understood how much your mindset influences your entire life. Basically, I found it difficult to list what I was grateful for each day and how my daily happiness depended on “so many” things outside my control. Find happiness in what you have and be grateful for your lot! It will change your world! Have a safe, merry and happy Xmas, filled with gratitude.

THE PLAY AND SHINE PROJECT GROUP ARE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT HAVING FUN! THEY HAVE THE CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS AND, ALONGSIDE WHITSUNDAY REGIONAL COUNCIL, TO MANAGE LOGAN’S ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND (LAP) TO ITS COMPLETION. After receiving their Community Purpose Sanction, the entity launched their first fund raising effort at an up market marquee event titled “Play in Style”, at Bowen Cup. “By simply purchasing a ticket to our trackside event, our guests raised $10,613.00 for the playground! No fund raising was done at the event. We were there to have a fantastic day at the races and to profile and thank our sponsors!” Play In Style event sponsors were Noel and Sharon Gardner, of Think Water Whitsunday, and Lisa Christofersen. Sharon taught Logan at C & K Cannonvale, so her link goes beyond sponsorship. Lisa is president of Play and Shine Project Group, and is also Logan’s mum. “We are fund raising for a community project, which has a beautiful thread of Logan through it. He was the inspiration for the Playground but, beyond that, the playground represents the goodwill, strength and solidarity of our community. We saw this first hand when Logan was having chemotherapy and then, after Logan became an angel, the way this community supported our campaign called “Logan’s Run”. Logan’s Run raised $61,000 for Childhood Cancer research.” “Community focused businesses and groups are the backbone of this project, and also strike an emotional chord within me. There are businesses in the Community who have been instrumental with their support to help with LAP, such as Bec at Core Life.” “Core Life is a sponsor in kind for our project. We could not have hoped for a better way to update the community on the project’s progress, and the Play and Shine Project Group. It’s like wise with our Bowen Cup Event. The following businesses extended discounts or extended complimentary product or gifts to use as our fabulous door prizes and best dressed prizes: Fish D’Vine,Prickly Pineapple, Core Life Magazine, Sea FM’s Jay and Dave, Mantra Boathouse, Foot’s Artworks, Adam and Eve Salon, Jo Sweeney, The Event Company, Tropical Designs, Graphic House, Loll Doll Make Up, Jono Anderson, Elite Security & Coles Cannonvale. Thank you to all our sponsors – Doctor 2 You, George Christensen, Think Water Whitsunday, Whitsunday Christian College & Whitsunday Family Practice! As LAP Silver Sponsors, Noel & Sharon from Think Water summarise it “Our business relies on The Community, so why wouldn’t we, in turn, support such a great community cause?” Without such extensions of goodwill, these events would not be able to return so much revenue to the playground. For sponsorship information, or to find out more, please contact 0427 761975.

WHO IS THE BLACK SHEEP OF YOUR FAMILY AND WHY?

If not the black sheep, I am certainly the envied one!

“Isn’t the black sheep generally the most interesting one? Back in Quebec, Canada, my grandpa, my dad and my brother are all doctors and my mum was a heritage minister for the federal government.

I would say I’m probably the worst for keeping in contact

As a child growing up in NSW, I am one of sixteen children born to the 8 brothers and sisters on my dads’ side of the family. Every year would bring about the Spence family reunion where we would all gather on neutral territory and run amuck.

So, leaving my family to settle in the Whitsundays and marry a skipper might put a bit of black on my own sheep skin! If not the black sheep, I am certainly the envied one!”

Out of all the first cousins, aunts and uncles we never really had a stand out black sheep. However, over the years I would probably say I am the worst for keeping in contact with my extended family, which now numbers over 65. If not for Mum and Dad giving me updates I would have no idea how everyone is!! “No news is good news” Right?

TALK ON THE STREET

To push the boundaries, to be out spoken and at times be damn right naughty

I was actually dreading the question I was going to get. Expecting to be handed a short and curly one, something to do with government or world forum, not my cup of tea. But, I got this one. It’s easy. It’s ‘Jordyn’ my second daughter. I have four wonderful children and, after asking this question to them all, it was indisputable. “It’s Jordyn” they all shouted. (As we had a chuckle). Three of my children are all similar in nature and looks, with dark hair and brown eyes. But Jordyn is different, fair hair and blue eyes. As gorgeous, funny and vivacious as Jordyn is, there is a little black sheep in her. One that makes her want to do things a little differently. To push the boundaries, to be out spoken and at times, be damn right naughty. But hey, everyone has a black sheep in their family. I love my black sheep just as much as I love all my lovely children. Iconic Lifestyle Changing your company brand to a bold name like Icon, requires a special determination, drive and conviction. An attitude which long term locals, Michael and Clace Brady definitely possess, along with their passion to build homes which truly reflect the iconic Whitsundays lifestyle. Previously the franchise owners of Cavalier Homes Whitsundays, after 5 years of building an enviable reputation and an impressive portfolio of homes in the area, Michael and Clace have now made the move to develop their own business and company brand, Icon Homes Qld. Driven by their passion for the region and a move, they plan to make their own iconic mark on the Whitsundays home building scene. Their new company brand name, Icon Homes Qld, is both motivational and aspirational. “The name Icon is motivational for us, it represents where we want to be and the type of homes we want to build,” Michael Brady explained. “It also reflects the aspirational attitude of our clients – they want an iconic home, specially built to suit their personal style and lifestyle.” Under their own, independent banner, Michael and Clace will have greater flexibility in tailoring home designs to suit both the true Whitsundays lifestyle and the client’s living requirements. “Cavalier was a great launchpad for us, and we are proud to continue to deliver high level service and remain exceptionally competitive with our pricing under our new brand Icon Homes. “We want people to start visualising their ‘Icon Homes Qld’ lifestyle before the build phase, which is a key factor which we can now offer,”

Michael said. “We will tailor designs to suit the customer and they can have their own input into many facets of the process so the finished home is truly their iconic residence.” Icon Homes Qld is launching a new collection of homes which are specifically designed for the NQ lifestyle. New designs and facades will suit all budgets and floor plans designed for the tropical way of life including breezy open planned living spaces with larger outdoor entertaining areas. “We want to appeal to both ends of the market and have top of the range designs for large, spacious homes with luxury inclusions through to affordable house and land packages for first home buyers across the region,” Michael said. Icon Homes Qld is based in Cannonvale, and with their large and experienced team, the company will be building in the local Whitsundays and Mackay area as well as into the Proserpine and Bowen regions. A signature of Icon Homes Qld designs will be the lifestyle inclusions with every build such as stainless appliances, stone benchtops and climate control air-conditioning. Icon is also offering new home builders a larger range of final finishes to select from, for example tiles, carpet Michael is a registered licenced builder with over 16 years of experience in the home building industry both locally and interstate. Getting ready to renovate? 1 KNOW YOUR BUDGET

The thought of spreadsheets might make your eyes glaze over, but a renovation budget doesn’t have to be boring – think of it as a gateway to your dream home. Creating a budget is a really important first step in the renovation process, as it can help you identify exactly what you want to do, and how you’re going to tackle it. Consider speaking to professionals to get a more accurate picture of your costs. This will give you a much better idea of what you’re up for, and help you make more informed decisions about where you can save, as well as the areas where you want to spend a little bit more. Good planning in the early stages might save you money down the track and could help you avoid unexpected costs. Depending on how big or small your plans are, you may want to consider breaking up the renovation into stages and starting with the most important improvements. To help you stay on track, keep all your receipts and update your spreadsheet as you go.

2 DON’T OVERCAPITALISE

Understanding your home’s value will help you structure your renovation budget. As well as the cost of doing the renovation itself, it’s important to think about your property’s value and the risk of overcapitalising. Put simply, overcapitalising is where you spend more money on your home than you are likely to get back if you had to sell it soon. For example, if you bought your house for $300,000 and then spent $150,000 renovating it and the average price for similar houses in your area is $400,000 – then you could find yourself out of pocket. It’s important to know what your house is worth now, and what it could be worth once your renovation is done. Look at the prices of similar houses in the area to get a good idea. If your planned renovation takes your costs too high – and you want to sell soon afterwards – then you may need to rethink your strategy.

3 CREATE A SAVINGS PLAN

Knowing your budget will also give you a better idea of how much you need to save. There are a number of options available to help kick start your savings plan including online savings accounts and term deposits. Some savings accounts can even offer bonus interest depending on the circumstances. These can be attractive to customers who are saving regularly towards a particular goal such as a renovation. Remember, renovations don’t always go to plan so it’s worth considering saving an extra 10 to 20 per cent as a buffer.

4 SEE YOUR BANKER OR BROKER

Sorting out your finances can be daunting and individual circumstances vary, so it’s important to sit down with your banker or broker to work out the right plan for you. They can help you think about the long term plans you have for your family and, therefore, your home.

5 USE YOUR EQUITY

Equity is the value of your home minus the amount you still owe. This can build up over time either because your home has risen in value or you’ve paid down your loan balance. The equity you’ve built up in your home can give you the power to access funds for your renovation. The amount of equity you can access to pay for your renovation will depend on how much your lender will let you borrow. Of course, you need to be able to service any increase in debt, so just because you have $100,000 equity doesn’t mean you can borrow all of this for your renovation project. There are many calculators which can help you get an idea of how much equity you’ve got like NAB’s home equity calculator on nab.com.au.

6 BUILDING LOANS

If it’s a big renovation, you could consider a building loan. The benefit of this type of loan is it may allow you to draw funds from the loan progressively as the invoices come in. Another advantage is that you’re only charged interest on the progressive loan balance, not the full amount. It’s also usually interest-only during the building stage of up to 12 months. This might help your cash flow as you’re renovating, especially if you’re renting while you do it. Once your interest-only period has finished, you will start paying principal and interest.

7 REDRAW

Redrawing from your existing home loan for renovations may be an option and depends on how much available redraw you have. Not all loans have a redraw option. Keep in mind, the balance on your loan will increase if you do this and would mean you might pay more interest.

8 PERSONAL LOANS

A personal loan might be just the help you need to get smaller renovations underway, like a new kitchen or bathroom. Once you have an estimate of the cost of your project, you can apply for the loan and receive the funds as a lump sum. The interest rates on personal loans are higher than home loans because they’re unsecured. But, because the loan term is shorter, the interest charged over the life of the loan may be lower. Keep in mind it also means your loan repayments are higher the shorter your loan term is.

9 CREDIT CARDS

Credit cards can be used to pay for renovation materials as needed. If your card has an interest-free period, you can reduce your interest charges by paying the full closing balance each month by the due date. Keep this in mind if you’re renovating on a tight budget. Like personal loans, the interest on credit cards is generally higher than a home loan because they’re unsecured credit. If you have a 100% offset arrangement with your home loan, keep the money in the offset account as long as you can to reduce your home loan interest. Consider using your credit card to pay for your materials then pay your credit card account using money in your offset account.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO HAUTE DESIGN, METRO TILES AIRLIE BEACH IS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF TRADE AND TRANSFORMATION. Managing Director, Rebecca Ross, began with a small selection of stylish tile designs, determined to bring a point of difference into the Airlie Beach community. “Like any new business, it took dedication and determination to get up and running. The business began with just me and now we have a wonderful team of five, an expansive range of beautiful tiles, many exclusive to Metro Tiles, as well as a thriving and well respected business. “The majority of our tiles are imported from the world leaders of ceramic tiles in Italy and across Europe. Not only can you be guaranteed of choosing from exclusive ranges of tiles, but your selection is backed up by many years of experience and professional training of the people behind our products,” Rebecca said. Locally owned and operated, Metro Tiles Airlie Beach offers an expansive range which often surprises first-time visitors. “From our luxury exclusive Italian masterpieces to our basic builder’s tiles, there is a range to suit every taste and budget. What’s more, we offer the tools and advice for the job, from tiling tools and accessories, adhesives, grout, sealers and cleaners,” Rebecca said. In 2012, Metro Tiles Airlie Beach introduced an industry show-stopper, an interior design service in their showroom. This innovative approach incorporates each interior design facet, from walls, laminate, stone benchtops and carpet to finer touches such as door handles and, of course, the

tiles. The selection takes an average of three hours to complete and it’s all done in the showroom. This means no travelling from place to place for the client, reducing stress and saving time. Its interior design service also extends to pre-sale styling, to help home owners showcase the best of their property, as well as colour consultations for those looking for fresh ideas. The showroom was awarded ‘Best Showroom North Queensland’ by Australian Tiles Councils in recognition of its expansive services. As a businesswoman, Rebecca has grown from strength to strength as the business has flourished. Her contribution to the local business community was recognised last year when she was awarded Women in Businesses – Business Champion Airlie Beach and Islands. Rebecca and Metro Tiles support the local Whitsundays community where possible through sponsorship and volunteering. Rebecca joined the Reef Festival Committee and organised the event, “Revvin the Reef”. In celebration of how far they have come in 10 years, Metro Tiles Airlie Beach will host a 10th birthday celebration on November 14, from 9am ‘til 1pm at their showroom. Grab a bargain with special birthday sale prices and entertain the kids with face painting and tile art. There will also be a sausage sizzle and a prize giveaway. When it comes to the best in tiles, choose from a trendsetting and highly desirable exclusive range, only offered by Metro Tiles.

LOCAL MAN AND LOCAL SINGLE-DAD, KEN THOMPSON, LOVES HIS BUSINESS ALMOST AS MUCH AS HE LOVES HIS KIDS For Ken, his business and all his staff are part of the family. It is not unusual to find Ken’s son learning how to break things down and re-build, just like his dad. His daughter is more of the brains behind the business, constantly asking her dad how the business works. Ken loves the connection he has with his business and his kids. It reminds him of the times he shared with his own parents and siblings, all taking it in turns to mind their family-owned sandwich store in Sydney. Running a locally owned independent business has been something Ken aspired to from the age of 17 and now, 20 years on, something he can proudly say he’s achieved. When you buy your new air-conditioning unit from Ken you receive a high level of care and commitment as well as a superior product. The service and after-care are so good you could almost say you’ve become a part of the family.

TOP 10 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU ARE BUYING A NEW AIR-CONDITIONING UNIT • You spend more time with your air-conditioning than you do with your car so make sure you take your time deciding. Make an informed decision. • Longevity. How long do you want your air-conditioning unit to last? Pick one with a good reputation and a good warranty. • Efficiency. How many energy stars does the system boast? Look for incentives such as tariff selections from your energy provider. You can get up to $500 off with some companies if you ring them up and ask about their tariff for peak smart air-conditioning. • Brand awareness. Select a brand that has a good reputation and has been in the industry a long time • Warranty. What sort of warranty do you want your new unit have? Parts only, labour and parts or labour only warranty? Daikin offer 5 year parts and labour and Ice cool offers 7 years labour only. • Think quality more than price. This is a long-term investment and a partnership with your supplier. The quality of the product and the after-care service should be priority. • Size matters. Consider the area you are cooling/heating. Think of the size of space, where the sun rises and sets plus the thermal insulating qualities of your home. • Are you looking for a unit that heats as well? Reverse-cycle air-con is the most efficient form of heating. Ice Cool recommend you consider heating for living areas and not bedrooms in this climate. • After-care. What happens if your unit breaks down? Will the company you are buying it from repair it too? Can you be assured of quality after-care for your purchase? • Who you are buying from? Choose a local supplier with a good reputation. A local company that will keep your money in the region.

Narellan Pools Mackay has won six national awards at Narellan Pools National Conference hosted at the Intercontinental Hotel in Sydney. The six awards represent the highest number of awards won by any regional pool builder, out of the forty franchisees who attended the conference. In accepting the awards Mackay Franchisee, Rob May, said the awards represented many hours of hard work by his local team. “These awards prove there is no substitute for hard work and that good pool building design does not have to be expensive . We work with our clients. The most important thing is to listen to what our clients want and then to work with them to deliver those ideas in a cost effective way.”

The judges were looking for attention to detail, build quality, overall appeal in various divisions with the photos to be taken both day and night. We were lucky to have Pam Pattemore, a local photgrapher produces our amazing images. The local winning awards included national gold, for the best lifestyle pool, best federation, best maderia and best federation designs. Narellan Pools Mackay also took out a silver award for the best madeira and bronze for best spa or alternative pool. “We submitted 12 entries and we have completed some truly fantastic work over the past twelve months. There were several other local entries I thought we were very unlucky to miss out.

However, it goes to show the high standard of work we are up against at a national level. “Many of the other entries had larger build budgets than ours, which again proves it’s how you spend your money and not how much money you spend.” “We have a great relationship with our clients both during and after we complete our pools,” Rob said. Narellan Pools usually install a turn- key package including, paving, concreting, fencing, water features, Bali huts, heaters and umbrellas. However it’s usually the clients who complete the final landscaping. “Narellan Pools is a great company to be involved with. We’re a National Franchise Group which gives us a distinct market advantage and offers our clients unrivalled security.”

“Like most things, technology is advancing all the time and, with our large group of pool builders, it allows us to compare notes on what clients want and how to deliver business excellence. The end result being a beautiful pool that’s easy to maintain and, importantly, has minimal running costs.” “My local team is made up of officer manger, Cheryl Hughes and pools installers, Davin Jensen and Adam Schapp, all of whom have many years of expertise in their various fields. We’re all local people and it’s that local knowledge which is vitally important in pool design.” “We have long term relationships with our clients and that’s why we continue to lead the market both on a local and national level.”

LOOKING AT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN BRISBANE? “My Dad was a client of Steve’s for over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.” Mark (Fitter)

WILL BRISBANE JOIN THE $1 MILLION CLUB?

YES

FUTURE HOUSING PRICES IN BRISBANE ARE NOT DIFFICULT TO PREDICT WHEN THERE IS A CONSISTENT HISTORY OF BRISBANE TRENDS FOLLOWING SYDNEY.

E T A E CR ALTH X E A W ET V A S

The average price of a Brisbane house in 1972 was $15,000 and today it is $520,000. This is a trend of Brisbane house prices doubling every 7-8 years. Such a trend has to be seen over several years to be in perspective. Whilst Melbourne and Sydney prices rise and fall on their ever upward general trend, Brisbane historically has been more stable with rises and plateaus. An exception was in 2011 when prices were at the current levels, but dropped by 4%. This was due to a combination of two floods and a slowdown in interstate migration. With Sydney now experiencing average prices in excess of $1 million Brisbane is again seeing exceptional interest from Sydney buyers. In July this year, NAB Chief Economist, Alan Oster, said Brisbane home owners should record increases of 5% by 2016. Also at that time Bis Shrapnel said Brisbane had the best investment potential with an average price of $520,000 and predicting a 13% increase by 2018. They also predicted that Brisbane will be the only capital city in Australia that will NOT experience a decline in medium house prices in real terms in the next three years. Brisbane already has its $1 million plus suburbs of Teneriffe, Ascot & New Farm enjoying average prices of $1.4 million. For those looking for a crystal ball, consider that in June 2012 Australia had 220 suburbs with an average price over $1 million and today there are 437 such suburbs! - STEVE TAYLOR

(07) 4987 7567 2 Borilla St, Emerald office@stevetaylor.com.au

I predict Brisbane will reach an average house price of $1 million before 2025.

Once a fortnight, the Whitsunday Sailing Club becomes a source of adventure and fun for local people living with a disability. Endeavour Foundation in partnership with local nonprofit organisation Sailability, teach people with a disability how to sail in the beautiful Whitsundays. In the process, the program promotes social inclusion by allowing people with a disability to learn new skills alongside others in the community. Sailability has been operating since 2009, with a fleet of 10 boats and generous volunteers who devote their time showing people with various disabilities how to enjoy the art of sailing. The whole day is full of joy and laughter for everyone involved, with people keen to jet around on the open sea and let the sails gently push them along. Throughout the experience, the sailors have a big smile on their faces. “I enjoy spending time with the volunteers and sailing the catamaran” said Jim Tzatzalos, a keen sailing participant. When they’re out of the water, there is a sausage sizzle to sate appetites after a fun, productive day. Anyone can be a Sailability volunteer. All you need is motivation, spare time, a sense of humour, patience and kindness. In return, you experience laughter, fun, action and a sense of satisfaction. If this sounds like something you would like to do call Sailability on 0433 989 044. If you are a local business you can buy Sailability a new boat, and even have your name printed on it. Endeavour Foundation and Sailability are keen to continue working together in the community, by supporting people with a disability and the volunteers that dedicate their time.

EXPERIENCE THE SYNERGY DIFFERENCE TODAY

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL

SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

Employee Issues AFTER A FEW EVENTFUL MONTHS, I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LARGE AMOUNT OF TENSION IN THE OFFICE. After discussing the issue with the team, it turned out that the grumpy noises coming from my office had been upsetting everyone, even though it wasn’t directed at them. A few days later, a client asked if they could bring their puppy in for their appointment as they weren’t leaving it at home yet. It was the perfect opportunity to brighten up the office – who doesn’t like puppies! The team loved having her there and took turns taking her out for walks. This gave me the idea to implement pet therapy and allow them to bring in their dogs now and again. On our first trial, my boxer, Brandy, had a puppy accident, leaving us a smelly surprise. She must have planned her timing – right as we were expecting a client. There was no time for the girls to play Rock-Scissors-Paper to decide who got clean up duty, my dog, my clean up. A smelly surprise aside, Brandy was a welcome distraction and she cheered up everyone in the office, even the few clients who she was more than happy to greet at the door! Before we are able to claim Synergy as a pet friendly office, we are in the process of confirming health and safety regulations. Hopefully soon, we will be able to re-introduce bring your dog to work day – only for the toilet trained dogs of course! CASH FLOW IS KING I know I keep harping on this but it’s true, your Profit & Loss alone will not tell you if you are in trouble, neither will your budget. In a recent meeting with a client and an independent consultant, the consultant suggested updating their budgets to give them an idea of their current position and that I simplify my cash flow to make it easier to understand. However, what he was suggesting was a historical look at where the cash had gone.

At Synergy, we pride ourselves on being Self-Managed Superannuation Fund specialists, providing strategic advice for any stage of life. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. To experience the Synergy difference, come in and meet with our friendly team to discuss your financial and taxation needs.

A cash flow gives a truer picture on a business’ position moving forward by estimating the available cash at any given time. A budget, however, will only advise if you are meeting particular income and expenditure targets, not the effect on the liquidity of the business. This is not to discount the value of having budgets within a business. However you just can’t rely on them solely to track your business’ financial health. A business can combine their cashflow and budgets into one living document, which not only helps them to understand where expenditure overruns are occurring, but also whether or not there is enough money in the bank to meet upcoming payments.

less is MORE OFTEN, WHEN PAYING FOR ADVERTISING, WE WANT TO INCLUDE AS MUCH AS WE CAN FOR OUR CUSTOMERS. WE WANT TO GIVE THEM A FULL PICTURE OF OUR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES AND GET THE BEST BANG FOR OUR BUCK! HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT THE TIME OR THE PLACE (SPACE). We all recognise the value of a dollar and every dollar is hard earned. As a business owner, you choose to invest your hard earned dollars in advertising space. Effectively, you’re buying an opportunity to reach your audience and educate them. The normal reaction is to want to include as much information as you can, so the customer gets a full picture of all the features and benefits you are offering. However, this isn’t always the best way of thinking, or the most effective. Less is often more! Think about the way you consume advertising. What do you do when you see an advertisement which is busy, cluttered, very colourful or just jam packed with text, does it engage you to read every last skerrick of detail or do you find yourself drifting away from it, shifting your focus elsewhere as it is too overwhelming and difficult to quickly digest? Recall the average human attention span is 8 Seconds. It would take longer than that to read an advertisement which could be mistaken as an essay!

Next time you are advertising, give some serious thought to the one, at most, two key messages you would like to get across to your audience. Consider space, colour and positioning. Consider the average human attention span (8 Seconds, it really isn’t very long!). Consider also the ease at which you recall a website address versus a phone number. Which do you think your clients will remember more easily? Although the intent is to give the customer as much information as possible in an convenient place, often this is overwhelming and has an adverse reaction. For something different, consider using an intriguing teaser to peak the readers interest and engagement, sparking them to look for more info. Boom, they are visiting your 24/7 store, your website! Compliance Queens

With glamorous pink power suits, warm smiles and friendly natures the ladies from Bookkeeping and Taxation Solutions in Airlie Beach are certainly not what you’d expect from your average accountant. This dynamic pair certainly know how to turn a stereotype on its head. They explain everything in easy to understand language and love nothing more than relieving their clients of the stress and burden of tedious paperwork and obligations. The favourite part of their day is seeing the smile of relief on a customer’s face.

Julie started the bookkeeping side of their business 20 years ago and Rachel worked as a part-time accountant while studying at university. Then, seven years ago it felt like a logical step for the pair to join forces and grow the business together. Both women are now qualified accountants as well as registered tax agents. They can look after the needs of businesses and individuals, and add their personal touch to the accountancy trade.

The two work extremely hard but when they do have spare time Julie likes to get out into her garden and Rachel likes to hang out with her hubby and two children. Rachel is building a new home with her husband and is looking forward to moving in soon. In the little spare time she has Rachel is developing her skills by studying to become a financial planner. Their warm characters and caring approach to accountancy certainly gives them the edge. They proudly own their own office and are the only accountants in the Airlie Beach CBD. It’s the little touches that matter most to Julie and Rachel, like bringing fresh barista style coffee to every customer. Working together as mother and daughter gives their business a unique connection. Together with their efficient, precise and highly qualified level of service they are accountants you can really trust to do the job right. www.corelife.com.au 37

Lured by convenience yet wooed by natural beauty, it was simply milk and bread the Harvey family needed when they sailed into the Hamilton Island Marina almost 30 years ago.

marina arms. During the late 80’s it was an exciting time to be on Hamilton Island, with plenty of opportunity for a young, dynamic family to make their mark on the island.

Richard and Gail Harvey made the epic decision to sell everything they owned in Melbourne, in 1982, to buy a 52ft ketch to sail around the world. What makes this decision more remarkable is that their four children, Chris, Mark, Andrew and Stacy, would join them on this adventure. Stacy, the youngest, was eight years old when the family set sail for new horizons.

When they were offered the opportunity to operate Hamilton Island Watersports, they jumped at it.

The ketch, Gai Charisma, is a combination of all six names. Not only did the family become very close, but they learnt how to work together as a team. Something which stood them in good stead for running Hamilton Island Water Sports, a business they would operate together in years to come. Sailing from port to port across the world sparked an entreprenurial spirit which is still prominent in the family’s business ventures today. When the family arrived in port, their husband and father, Richard, would set about finding a job. As an electicrical engineer by trade, and a jack-of-all-trades by nature, it never took Richard long to find a profession he could be useful in. Richard’s first position on “Hammo” was moving the cleats on the 38 www.corelife.com.au

In those early days, Hamilton Island Watersports consisted of one boat, used for water skiing and parasailing. The family also operated the War Canoe for many years, running popular day trips to Dent Island, home of Bill and Lean Wallace and their amazing coral art studio. During the 90’s, they expanded their operations to include a tandem skydiving business on Hamilton Island. This paved the way for their son Chris to become a pilot and encouraged Stacy into an early career as a competitive skydiver. The Harvey family had found their paradise, which made the following tragic circumstances hard to comprehend. Richard, at only 48 years old, died in a light plane crash. The close-knit family were devastated, that the man who had given them the world was no longer a part of it. As the family mourned, the four children rallied around their mother to support her through the unthinkable. They focused on the

business, a legacy of their father’s. “He was a barefoot water skier, a scuba diver and an adventurer at heart. “Watersports was one of his biggest passions in life, and showing off the majestic Whitsundays to guests from all over the world was something which brought him immense joy,” Gail said. Hamilton Island Watersports has now grown to include a fleet of eight vessels, taking on average of 20,000 people out on the water annually. Gail and her four children are incredibly proud of the growth of the business, which includes parasailing, water skiing, tube rides, fishing charters, snorkeling trips, day cruises to Whitehaven Beach as well as their latest thrill seeking tour aboard a jet boat. Richard would most certainly be proud. Hamilton Island Watersports is still operated by Gail, with her sons Mark and Andrew. Chris and Stacy both live and work in Airlie Beach. Chris is the operations manager at Whitsunday Transit, while Stacy and her partner Andrew own and operate two businesses in Airlie Beach, Mama Africa’s Bar and Niteclub and Lotus Boutique.

Gail laughs at the irony of Stacy owning such a feminine boutique when she was such an energetic tom-boy growing up. “Growing up on a boat with three boys plus her father, Stacy became a self-confessed tom-boy. She learned how to rough it with her brothers. I could never get shoes on her, now she owns the premier fashion destination in Airlie Beach!” Gail, or ‘Gi Gi’ as she is affectionately known, has chased uncharted horizons on her own adventure, producing a series of 10 adventure stories for children. The series is called ‘Angie’s Adventures’, made up of educational books designed for grandparents to read to their grandchildren. With seven grandchildren of her own, Gail is experienced in what young children respond to and what helps them learn. The next generation of Harvey’s include Sailor, Ryder, Pebbles, Charlie, Tiah, Noah and Piper who no doubt all have a bit of the ocean, and their grandfather’s adventurous spirit in their blood. As Christmas draws near, hold your family tight and cherish every moment. Like the Harveys, no doubt you will face all sorts of weather, but it’s how you ride out the storm together as a family that will see you sail into the sunshine. www.corelife.com.au 39

Sisters are like different flowers from the same garden. Beautiful individually but even more glorious when bunched together. It was one sister’s floral creativity and another sister’s business savvy which launched the original platform for these three sisters, Alexandra, Bianca and Viginnia, into business together. Bianca, a well-known resident florist in Bowen, went into business with Alexandra. As the business flourished, the sisters leased a store and opened Floral Finesse in 2012. When the sisters needed to find a new location, the concept of combining the florist with a coffee house was born. The decision to renovate an old fish and chip shop was ambitious at the least, but Alexandra had a vision of the kind of community hub and chic café she wanted to create. With the help of their father and husbands, who are all carpenters, Le Sorelle Coffee House and Florist was carved out of three months of grueling work. “We strive to be ‘the place’ you can’t wait to come back to! We pride ourselves on the quality of fresh ingredients, boutique roasted coffee and the experience of our staff to provide consistently excellent food and service, every time,” Alexandra said. The floristry side of the business is building its strength and reputation as a quality provider of all things floral. SPECSAVERS CANNONVALE

Four eyes are better than two at Specsavers Cannonvale. British duo Laura and Fiona opened their shop two years ago and are the only Specsavers between Mackay and Townsville. “We couldn’t believe how busy we got straight away” said Laura, who is so proud of how far they have brought the business in the last two years. “We are excited to announce we will be opening our second testing room at the beginning of the next year”. Fiona is the on-site optometrist while Laura looks after retail and the dispensary. Together they make up the only all British Specsaver partnership in the state. Although they miss their families and the way the seasons change back in England, they love the Aussie lifestyle. “Everyone is so friendly out here and we meet so many interesting people in our job. I love the way Airlie Beach attracts so many different types of people” said Laura. In their spare time, the pair love going to the gym. Fiona enjoys doing free-weights whereas Laura prefers to do a few classes. When they are not at the gym, they love the normal things in life like reading books,

watching T.V. and movies. Fiona is a huge Dr Who fan and is going to the Dr Who convention in Sydney next month with her long-term partner, who works as a fly in fly out quantity surveyor. Laura on the other hand is jetting off to Bali to get her dive ticket. The girls love Specsavers because it is a people focused company that believes in its staff and really listens to what its customers want and need. “What makes us different is that we have something for everyone in our store from kids to the elderly, different styles and for all budgets” said Fiona. Specsavers Cannonvale, are also the only optometrist in the Whitsundays to offer free Digital Retinal Photography. This service takes a picture of the back of your eye to test for eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. The test can even pick-up retinal changes that may be associated with diabetes. “Your eyes tell a good health story” said Fiona, who recommends you call the store to make an appointment for the free service and a bulk billed sight test. www.corelife.com.au 41

The Power Of Mum

WHITSUNDAY HEALTH CLINIC

As a country girl from Rylstone, NSW, Rowena’s aspirations of creating a health hub for the local community blossomed from observing her parents own and manage pharmacies and medical centres in regional communities. It is this experience and background that drove her to create the Whitsunday Health Clinic in Cannonvale, with the help of some very passionate and like-minded ladies. With the Whitsunday Health Clinic now in its sixth successful year, it has become known as the place to go when having problems that mainstream medicine cannot answer. The clinic’s strong reputation for results for health concerns including fertility, digestive problems, insomnia, anxiety and weight loss see patients traveling from as far as interstate for treatment ‘There is nothing more satisfying than seeing Rowena solve a patient’s health issue when they are completely frustrated and think there is no solution!” says Polly. Family values form the foundation upon which Whitsunday Health Clinic thrives. Rowena employs people who reflect her same level of passion and values for health and achieving results. Onyx Schultz, the Receptionist, is currently studying Naturopathy. Polly Muller manages the day to day running of the clinic and is also a Yoga Teacher at Yoga Therapies. 42 www.corelife.com.au

This dynamic group of ladies help to manage a team of 9 health professionals. “Working at the clinic is not just a job, it is an commitment towards educating the wider community on what it is to be healthy and the science as to how to do it. It gives us a vehicle to showcase our values” says Onyx. “I believe this innate responsibility to help and heal others comes from our mothers, and I am sure the ladies will agree. Despite our fathers all being involved in businesses as well, it is our mothers who have instilled the values of health, nurture and compassion into our lives, and we are so grateful for that.” says Rowena Rowena’s mum and dad have both been heavily involved in serving their communities. “I am proud that I see my own values instilled Rowena, in the way she conducts herself and cares for others, and the genuine interest she has in science and its importance in understanding in good health,” commented Roshni, proudly smiling at Rowena. Rowena was quick to reply, “of all the gifts from my mother, her lessons on health and the inspiration she gives me are the best of all”.

Jane Muller, Polly’s mum is her inspiration as she divides her time between the clinic and teaching yoga. Polly’s passion for the core principles of yoga and health is a reflection of her upbringing and it is this passion that saw Polly and Jane travel to Nepal to work in an all girls orphanage in 2010. “The experience opened my eyes and heart to my own blessings and health. Having the opportunity to share this with my own precious Mum was incredible, it was the first time in my life I experienced genuine perspective and deep appreciation. I have never been the same since,” says Polly. Amber Schultz, mother of Onyx has taken her caring nature and placed it into all aspects of her life. From raising Onyx, working with children as a Youth Counselor to caring for all creatures great and small for the RSPCA and her own business. Onyx’s drive to study Naturopathy and share her knowledge of health within the community was passed on to her from her mum. Onyx states, “Mum inspired me to share that love and support with others – it was impossible to not pass that on.” The clinic has been the conduit between these young professionals, providing an environment where friendships have been forged between the staff with more of the overtones of a connected family.

“I place such a high value on my family, and I see Onyx, Polly and the rest of our team as a key part of our working family. I feel we are successful because we have the same goals and vision. Seeing our beautiful mothers together made us realise how much our families have in common and how they have inspired us to be the next generation of helpers, movers, shakers, influencers and motivators.” said Rowena.

The team at Whitsunday Health Clinic would like to invite you into the family. Pop into the clinic and meet Rowena, Polly and Onyx first hand and you will be cared for like a family member. “And you can thank our mums for that skill! ” laughs Rowena.

LOOK WHAT’S TRENDING

Are you looking for the perfect Christmas present? If so, Professor Karen Pine from Hertfordshire University in England may have created the perfect formula to help get you there. This is what it looks like: (L x 2) + O + E2 - PD + EM = PP L = LISTENING, this means paying attention to any little hints

IN STORE NOW

that they may be consciously or subconsciously dropping about what they like

O = OBSERVATION, watch what it is they like when they are out shopping or browsing online. Watch what excites them, what they keep returning to and yearning for.

E = EFFORT, this is time spent and the thoughtfulness involved. Research has shown that the amount of effort that goes into the finding/creating of a gift hugely enhances the value to the recipient. PD = PERSONAL DESIRE, assuming that because we love something our loved one will too. The problem is that as human beings we over-estimate our understanding of others. We often allow ourselves to be driven by personal desire instead of using skills like listening and observing. EM = EMPATHY is the ability to pick up on another’s emotions and

imagine what they may be thinking or feeling. The perfect gift shows a depth of love and understanding for the receiver of your gift.

horoscopes LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 22

You may meet the love of your dreams through your friends at a social gathering. The ones that are already with a lover will experience a new surge of romance with their mate. Your business and career matters need more attention from yourself. You could be getting yourself all worked up about a relationship that is only in the doldrums at the moment. Things will move a lot faster as this period progresses and gets better. VIRGO AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 23 Now is the time to ask for favours from the boss or people who can help you in your career. Try to keep your money as tight as you can as funds will be needed soon. If planning a break very soon, this could be a good time to change a few things in your personal life. Check your personal behaviour during this period as wrong tactics could ruin your chances. A sympathetic person will improve your moods considerably in the near future. LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23 You have plenty of time to contemplate your relationships. Maybe it’s time to take a little vacation or just relax together and really enjoy each other’s company. A chance of promotion is indicated. It could be a good time to start that diet now and try to keep away from junk food haunts. People will be looking for your company and domestic matters will ease a little. It is a time that you could find out who your real friends are.

passionate romance. One of the most progressive periods of the year is coming up and your plans and aspirations should now be coming to conclusions. People will be willing to help you and most of your work should be plain sailing. You should be feeling much better and happier about most things and your love life should also be on the improve. Decisive action is what’s needed in your career matters and new prospects are coming up soon.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 - NOV 22

ARIES MARCH 21- APRIL 20

You should spend more time and pay more attention to present relationships. An old flame may re-enter your life and may bring an old sparkle back. Some surprises are in store for you. Someone you thought you knew could turn out to be completely different. Do look after your health. Do not put yourself in a position where someone could steal from you. It is a period of uncertainty and deceptive influences. If you are planning to start something, make sure you know all about it before you sign on the dotted line.

Your romantic affairs are taking a turn for the better. There will be plenty of sparkle and hot passion. All this heavy attention may leave you a bit bewildered at first but then you will start taking part in all the games. Don’t take anything for granted where career matters are concerned. Take charge and make sure everything is running smoothly. Some surprising happenings in your emotional life. If you handle things in their order of importance, it will be quite an easy ride for you. There will be some luck with an Aries person. If planning something for the future, make sure you know all the ins and outs of your partner’s situation. It is a good period for improving relationship matters and domestic situations.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 20 Plenty of social activity is indicated. You will be meeting people who can help you with your career. Your natural charisma will help you in this way. If dealing in real estate or other property matters, make sure you get expert advice. Romantic notions could turn into something more important during this period. It will be a period of good luck. Also, work you have done some time ago could now start to bring in some profits. CAPRICORN DEC 21 - JAN 19 Your latest conquest may start to make unrealistic demands. It is best to tell this person where to get off. Chase up an old lover and have a nice quiet dinner by candlelight and all the toppings that go with such romantic evenings. You may meet up with interesting new people whose ideas you could find confusing and not quite to your taste. There will be many lucky breaks during this period and, to take advantage of this good luck, try your chances in games. People from far away places could become very important to you very soon. AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19 This period is a real humdinger. There is going to be plenty of passion and energy to burn. If in the past you weren’t too happy with your life, now is the time to make amends. Try not to get too tangled in a secretive love affair. Your friendship with someone is in danger. Keep away from irritating and argumentive people. With a very busy period ahead you will need to be very strong about your rest and relaxation. You will need to make sure you get it. There are people who are willing to give you a hand. PISCES FEB 20 - MARCH 20 You will be feeling all romantic and mushy. You want the romantic treatment and all the loving and rumblings that go with it. You will divest yourself of all the inhibitions, shed a few more items in the process and enjoy the

TAURUS APRIL 21- MAY 20 An old flame is reappearing and you will have the chance to rekindle past passions. You could make it into a permanent relationship or just a nice bit on the side. More travel is indicated which will be very rewarding. Tie up any loose ends. This is a period in which money runs from your fingers faster than it comes so take care of urgent expenses first. There could be a sudden attachment with someone you already know. There could be some problems with relationships during this period but you will find it easier if you do not get involved too much. There will be lots more to learn in your love affairs. GEMINI MAY 21 - JUNE 21 The goddess of love has chosen you for special attention and you can really let yourself go and indulge in your fantasies. Differences from the past now can be smoothed over with a lover. At work, be tactful and don’t take any risks with other people’s feelings. Even if there are some problems with your domestic issues you will have to handle career problems first. If people are really on your side they will understand. Affairs of the heart might not go as you planned but you will still have a very good time during this period. CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Your love life has hit a bit of a snag lately. You are feeling a bit left out and turning down any social invitations isn’t going to help the situation. This is, luckily, only a temporary thing and later on you can make up for lost time with cosy evenings in front of a roaring fire with a partner wearing nothing but a smile. Try not to criticise your loved ones as their heart is in the right place. Pushing people will not always work the right way, so try tact instead. www.corelife.com.au 55

AFTER MODEL Jenna >STYLIST Larissa Anderson > MAKE UP ARTIST Bonnie from Beauty Worx Mackay

HAIR Larissa firstly lightened up Jenna’s ends to brighten it up to for a gorgeous new pastel toner. Larissa then used Schwarzkopf Professional Pearl Essence toners to soften Jenna’s hair to gorgeous pastel pink and violet keeping her roots and intense red. Larissa then cut Jenna’s hair short, strong and blunt. A trend that you will see plenty of this season. To complete Jenna’s look, Larissa styled her hair with soft curls using the Cloud Nine Wide Iron. Brushing them out to add gorgeous movement and waves.

MAKE UP When Jenna arrived at Beauty Worx with her new luscious red locks, I decided to emphasize her eyes with a classic, modern day smokey look. I used a range of Gorgeous Cosmetics pressed eye shadows in urban tones and a shimmer dust in Suede. I also applied Gorgeous strip lashes in ‘minis’ to excentuate Jenna’s lovely brown eyes. Jenna’s skin was flawless so, by using a foundation application technique, I buffed the Gorgeous Base perfect foundation on and contoured with the new cream Anastasia contour kit followed by a light dust of powder perfect. I applied medium brow duo powder in Anastasia to define her nicely arched brows and followed by a Rhubard blush and a natural lip colour to finish off her look with a nice, fresh radiant glow.

eXQisit transformations We’ve witnessed their heartwarming progress and now the transformations are complete. However, as ‘The Faces of eXQisit You’ explain, their journeys are still progressing.

One male and, one female were chosen to become The Faces of eXQisit You in October 2013, to partake in a two year complete transformation of the body, mind and spirit. Simone Baker and Nikolai Romanov were chosen for this incredible journey, where they departed from their old self and, two years later, have arrived at their ‘eXQisit’ new destination. eXQisit You Aesthetics and Skin Clinic owners, Doctor John McIntosh and his wife, Elizabeth, explain how the transformation had a greater impact on everyone involved than was originally anticipated. “We provided the platform for Simone and Nikolai to become the best versions of themselves possible. Like any individual journey, each person concentrated on what they most wanted to achieve and that included many personal challenges.” “The interesting surprise which unfolded was the far-reaching impact the journey had on everyone else surrounding Simone and Nikolai, from our staff to their own friends and family. We all embarked on the journey with them and, as a result, found our own positive learnings and challenges to take on board,” Dr. John said.

bef or

“The positive coaching sessions held strong importance throughout the transformation as both Simone and Nikolai had endured incredible challenges in the past. Through empowerment we gave them the tools necessary for them to discover they are the masters of their own destiny.”

e

The transformation was far from just physical. As well as being introduced to the best non-surgical anti-ageing skin treatments available, Simone and Nikolai were treated to health and fitness coaching, hair treatments, makeup and deportment techniques, as well as life coaching and stress management. “Simone and Nikolai are definitely not the same people we met two years ago.”

“For Simone and Nikolai, it is a new and exciting chapter in the rich tapestry of life, where they know, the only limitations are the ones they place on themselves.” “We wish them heartfelt courage, wisdom and love,” Elizabeth said.

Simone’s transformation

“When one is happy they radiate true confidence and beauty.” If you ask Simone Baker how she has changed in the past two years, her answer reflects her glittering personality. “It’s my sparkle. My sparkle is coming back, internally and externally. I’m learning to be happy with who I am, while setting goals to make the most of what life can be for me,” Simone said. Q: How has becoming the Face of eXQisit You changed your life? Mentally I am more in tune and balanced within myself. I have a broader sense in my self-belief and a clearer view of what I can achieve. Q: What was your favourite part of the journey? The willingness to open up and try new experiences, from new beauty treatments to meeting wonderful people in Mackay through events. Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned? Controlling the power of my negative impulsive thoughts (NITS) and not taking other people’s opinions of me to heart. Q: From your learnings, what advice can you give our readers on changing their lives? Take opportunities that come your way and learn from the fun experiences. Look outside the box and delve deep within yourself to discover who you really are as an individual and what you have to offer the world. Take timeout and heal from the inside to allow your sparkle to radiate through your daily life. Acceptance is the key and believe 100% you deserve the best in life.

Nikolai’s transformation

“If I was 20 years younger and knew then what I know now, would I have done things differently? YES!” Through becoming a Face of eXQisit You, Nikolai Romanov has discovered his own internal fountain of youth. “Day by day, month by month, the physical changes I experienced made me feel and look younger. My fine lines completely disappeared and people I meet now think I’m in my 30’s!” Nikolai said. Q: How has becoming the Face of eXQisit You changed your life? A big change has been an emotional one and this is a work in progress. I approach situations, past and present, differently. I feel stronger; physically, emotionally and psychologically. Q: What was your favourite part of the journey? My radical hair styles, being bold, taking a chance and challenging my concept on age-appropriateness. However, most of all, my face being transformed back into my youthful self. It was a revelation. I thought, “Oh, there you are. Where have you been?” Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned? The youthfulness I feel within myself doesn’t have to stay in there. It can come out to say hello. Life coaching taught me how to own my emotions and how to deal with them. Q: From your learnings, what advice can you give our readers on changing their lives? Don’t let your psychological age dictate who you want to be through social conditioning and negative thoughts. Your emotional age is your voice of reason, but, unfortunately, can become the voice of reasons not to try new things. Find that balance between your emotional, physical and psychological age and challenge yourself to achieve more. www.corelife.com.au 59

Starsign: Aries Favourite colour: Red Favourite number: 7 Favourite food: Lasagne Favourite beverage: Rum Meet a man who is as passionate about boats and sailing as he is about this beautiful area we live in. Clayton Matthews is the Marina and Operations Manager at Port if Airlie. He, like many other people, first came to town for a short holiday and loved Airlie Beach so much he decided to stay. That was almost fifteen years ago now. These days he loves spending time with his 6 year old son, Maveriux, and he enjoys his job. “It embraces everything I love; connecting with people that share my passion, being outdoors and,of course, boats!” Clayton is originally from Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW and grew up in Terrigal, on the NSW Central Coast. One of his proudest achievements is completing four Sydney to Hobart races on a boat called Merit. “The best place finish was the first year we raced south which was a first in the PHS division in 2008. The core crew were a group of mates, all commercial skippers that had previously worked in the Whitsundays. I could not have imagined or asked for a better crew or group of people to do my first Hobart.” Q: What do you love to do in your spare time? A: Water based activities. The Whitsundays is the perfect place for it! Q: What do you love doing while you’re on holiday? A: Getting outside, unwinding and enjoying our beautiful backyard of Australia. Starsign: Virgo Favourite colour: Yellow Favourite number: 3 Favourite food: Jerusalem Artichoke Favourite beverage: Champagne

Is there anything more beautiful than the sound of children’s laughter? A giggling kid is the epitome of happiness and happiness is exactly what Giggle Kids Child Care Centre is all about!

Say hi to Bec, Walter’s First Lady. She is the manager and host of newly opened Walter’s Lounge at Port of Airlie. Bec is an expert on wines and passionate about what she does. She loves guiding customers through Walter’s extensive wine list and recommending just the right wine. She also oversees the day to day front of house operations, focussing on the development of their boutique wine list and introducing guests to their delicious flavours.

Owner, Elyse McNichol, lived in the Whitsundays as a teenager, before expanding her experience in the child care industry. Together with her parents, Suzanne and Peter, they have strived to create an intimate and homely child care facility, where children receive constant support to reach their full potential. “Giggle Kids has a homely feel, with only two rooms. It has been completely refurbished, inside and out, with plans to include a wet play area as part of the playground. The equipment and toys are all brand new. Our qualified staff are enthusiastic about making a difference in children’s lives,” Elyse said. Elyse is also a primary school teacher’s aide and has a 4 year old son, Zavier. Q: What can we find you doing on the weekend? A: Although they drive me nuts sometimes, I would be completely empty without my family. They mean the world to me, so I like to spend a lot of time with them. My partner and I love to take Zavier to the park or the beach and we take him to gymnastics on the weekend. Q: What has been your favourite holiday destination? A: A trip to Melbourne when I was in my senior year of High School. We saw fairy penguins coming in from the ocean to their nesting boxes. The Great Ocean Road was spectacular, even if it did take us 12 hours!

“I love my job because I have the freedom to explore new wines and I’m enjoying the opportunity of developing my skills as a cocktail bartender too” says Bec, whose favourite wine is BillecartSalmon Brut Rose. “I was given a bottle from a guest when I was on Hamilton Island and it has become a special occasion wine for me ever since”. Q: What do you love to do in your spare time? A: I love getting out on my road bicycle. It gives me time to clear my head. Q: What is your mantra for life? A: Don’t waste time drinking something you don’t like. Q: Where is the best place you have visited? A: Burgundy - France. I had lunch sitting next to the vines of one of the best Pinot Noir producers in the region.

SCOTT WATERS Fast 4 facts about Scott Starsign: Capricorn Favourite Colour: Red Favourite Food: Home cooked BBQ’s Favourite Beverage: Craft beers As Chief Executive Officer of the Whitsunday Regional Council, Scott Waters’ role is both challenging and diverse, but presently one project is receiving his undevided attention, the Whitsunday Coast Airport. “I’m extremely proud and privileged to be afforded the responsibility by our Councillors to work on the airport project on a dedicated basis to deliver economic prosperity and growth for our region.” You couldn’t ask for a better man for the job. Scott has a passion for all things aviation, in fact his first position with the WRC was as GM of the Whitsunday Coast Airport. Born and bred in Mackay, Scott is also dedicated to strengthing the local economy and tourism. “A fully redeveloped Whitsunday Coast Airport will boost tourism expenditure by over $300M per year, create 2054 full time equivalent

jobs, inject $108M in wages and salaries into our community. That’s a boost our region needs,” Scott said. We put Scott in the hot seat to find out more about his position with the WRC and what he enjoys outside of work.

Q: What has been your favourite part of the CEO position so far? a: Working closely with our Mayor and Councillors to return financial stability at Council has been an extremely important achievement. This has been in tandem with providing a commercially, forward thinking work force that is focused on community outcomes. After achieving stability and a commercial focus at Council, the next steps have been to deliver the future development of our region. A key platform has been the growth and development of our airport which has achieved phenomenal growth over the past four years and with the current growth trend the achievement of 77% growth in passenger numbers over the same period of time. Q: What can we find you doing when you’re not working? a: Spending time with my beautiful family is top of the list. Having a position close to my family in Mackay is also a tremendous bonus. Otherwise, I like to hit the gym when time allows. I love to travel and I have a passion for all things aviation.

Whitsundays Primed For Takeoff Securing funding to fulfil the Whitsunday Coast Airport Master Plan is vital for the future of the region. On its own the injection of over $100 million in airport construction will be a big win for our local community at a time when we desperately need it.

During the construction phase the upgrade will:

Create 446 full time equivalent jobs

Generate over $37 million in wages and salaries

Add over $72 million to our gross regional product

But it’s the flow on effects that are truly remarkable. A development of this scale will have positive ripples throughout our entire region. Improved facilities means more flights and more competition amongst the airlines. This will be a win for our residents who commute south for business and to see family, but will also catapult the Whitsundays into the top tier of tourism destinations on the globe.

Whitsundays Primed For Takeoff The additional flights will result in our region’s businesses soaking up the tourism dollar as the visitors soak up the rays of sunshine.

An upgraded airport will:

Boost tourism expenditure by over $300 million per year

Create 2054 full time equivalent jobs

Inject $108 million in wages and salaries into the community

Independent economic analysis has found the project will also create an infrastructure demand to accommodate and entertain tourists.

This will underpin construction in the region for the next two decades and will:

Create 2753 full time equivalent jobs

Inject almost $215 million in tradies wages and salaries

Add over $425 million to our gross regional product

The potential for an export hub based around agriculture adds further weight to the proposal and plays to the strength of why it makes sense for investors to have faith in our region. No other area has the natural attributes of the Whitsundays; A place of unmatched tourism potential, of fertile agricultural lands, proximity to resources and a lifestyle that is unmatched. Fulfilling the Whitsunday Coast Airport Master Plan will create jobs and broaden our economy. It’s an investment that will ensure our region is primed for takeoff.

Little can compare to the thrill of flying a helicopter. From the initial adrenalin of takeoff to mastering the hover, it’s a challenge and a skill appearing on more people’s bucket lists. While the thought of learning to fly may seem daunting, Des Davey from Helibiz explains how achievable it can be. “You don’t require any previous experience to give flying a go in our one-on-one training. You can obtain a private helicopter license with a two week theory course, 50 hours minimum of flight time and an exam,” he said. Des’s passion for flying came while he was running a catamaran sailing business in the Whitsundays. “I met a local heli pilot who flew in Papua New Guinea. He came out on the boat for a cruise and I was captivated by his stories. I told him he could come out sailing any time he liked for free if he told more heli adventure stories.” “One day he flew the old Air Whitsunday Bell 47, landing on the water near Daydream Island next to the boat on fixed floats. He took me for a flight and I was bitten by the heli bug.”

businesses, Whitsunday Helicopter Group Mackay and Hamilton Island Aviation, offer, each day brings a new challenge and a new thrill. “The ship transfers are always interesting as there’s no holding up a marine pilot. This means we operate in challenging conditions and need to keep a cool head.” “Sling loading takes a lot of precision, delivering

“From that point forward I schemed and planned how I could turn flying helicopters into a business. We started Helireef on New Year’s Day in 1994,” Des said. Helireef first operated from the front lawn of Des’s and, his wife, Karyn’s family home in Cannonvale, before moving to Shute Harbour Airport later that year. The business has since grown into a multi-faceted company, incorporating everything from the sales and service of helicopters to chartered flights, community event assistance, pilot training and taxi service for seamen. Des’s business became the official Australian Robinson helicopter Dealer in 1997, and has since sold in excess of 500 machines. Its affiliated company, Whitsunday Helicopter Group Mackay specialises in marine pilot transfers, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including instrument flight rules night flying to ships 120 miles offshore, sometimes in challenging weather conditions. This area of expertise includes Des’s son, Jackson, who was taught how to fly by his dad. “Jackson has been in helicopters for most of his life and he was an absolute natural. I liken helicopter flying, especially hovering, to playing the drums. You can’t just pick it up on day one, but Jackson proved me wrong, on both counts! He could play drums from day one and he hovered a helicopter on day one. He’s a complete natural with his hands and feet.” “He obtained his commercial license in early 2013 and flies from our Mackay base servicing the ships at sea as well as general charter and construction air work.” “He will be progressing to multi-engine and IFR next year, which is twin engine night flying,” Des said. No two days in the helicopter are the same. Because of the diverse range of services Helibiz and its affiliated

construction materials too hard to access sites on Whitsunday Islands.” “With the tourism side of the business, we love showing off our beautiful back yard, Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef through the windows of our Hamilton Island choppers and seaplanes. It’s the only local helicopter business with daily access to all island resorts. “We have transported many interesting people, including Muhammad Ali, Mariah Carey and Bill Gates, along with a long list of Hollywood A-list celebrities and royalty. It’s a pleasure to showcase the best of Australia to the world,” Des said. With more than 60 employees and 27 aircraft, Helibiz and its affiliated companies have grown to become one of Australia’s premier aviation groups. However, Des and his family still plant their roots firmly locally. They provide helicopter flights to community charities and events, including providing airsupport for the Run the Great Whitsundays Walk. Without this support from above the event couldn’t happen. Helibiz also provides support for the local Bowen and Whitsundays Air Cadets and have development plans to keep growing strongly in the region to further strengthen the local economy and community. Take to the sky, with professional advice, sales and service from Helibiz, Australia’s premier Robinson Helicopter dealership and the Whitsunday’s leader in helicopter services. www.corelife.com.au 69

THE SKIN IS THE LARGEST ORGAN OF YOUR BODY . . . LOOK AFTER IT!

Acne scarring, fine lines, uneven pigmentation, breakouts and enlarged pores are conditions so many of us suffer from. As a result there is a vast array of chemical treatments out there. If you are looking for something 100% organic though, now is the time to experience Collagen Induction Therapy. For adults the production of collagen slows down with age leaving the skin with less structure. These skin changes occur naturally, so it makes sense that the best way to turn back the skin’s clock is the generation of new cells. Collagen Induction Therapy, otherwise known as derma rolling or needling is a process where tiny puncture channels are made in the skin. The skin’s automatic response is to produce more collagen, creating new fresh skin, essentially healing itself. Collagen Induction Therapy also increases product penetration up to 400 times! In other words your moisturizer instead of just sitting on the surface, will be fully absorbed in multiple layers of skin as opposed to just one. This treatment is also effective on wrinkles, scarring, ageing, capillaries, even stretch marks, reducing the appearance of previous problem areas. Collagen Induction Therapy is one of the latest skin renewal techniques today. Interested? Book for a free consultation. Before

Angel Zoo is the brainchild of local business woman Jacqui Angel who, together with her supportive husband, Kelby Angel, have dreamt about making this a reality for years. “We are going to have two of the most spoilt kids in the Whitsundays” she laughs as she takes me through the spectacular vision she has for the new play centre. The Whitsunday weather is often too hot in the summer months and followed by weeks of rain in the rainy season so an indoor entertainment venue for kids has been in hot-demand from mums and dads throughout the region. A Melbourne based company called ‘Imagination Play’ has designed the soft play pieces, all built to strict Australian standards and tested for the safety and comfort of all customers. There will be an inflatable jumping castle, a two level main structure that has tunnels, slides and a mesh

bridge, plus an indoor sports court, bike track and a large toddler’s area with a ball pit. Angel Zoo has two children’s party rooms that can be decorated to suit popular themes with various packages available and the entire premises can be booked after opening hours for private parties. All the staff are qualified child-carers and hold current first aid training certificates. They all love children and are eager to bring a barrel full of fun and laughter to every kid that comes through the doors. The vision doesn’t stop there though, Jacqui has created a wholesome café serving nutritious, healthy lunches, snacks and drinks. There are some homemade treats available with a cold display filled with yummy things to choose from. Parents are well looked after too with barista coffee free for every adult with their entry voucher. The school holidays promise boundless fun with activities such as cooking classes and craft workshops. Jacqui’s vision is to create a community hub as well as a play centre. Angel Zoo is a place for kids, mums, dads and guardians to relax and have fun away from the extreme Whitsundays weather. The community spoke and Angel Zoo listened. It is now up to all of us to get behind it.

Family Matters Mr Jamie Novosel Director of Admissions

Roles of Parents and Teachers

‘You can choose your friends, though you can’t choose family’, is usually an adage sympathetically heard in conversation when a negative experience is had with a family member. Families, no matter their social status, will always have their ‘ups and downs’, confrontations and clashes of personalities.

Introducing THE HEALTH MOMENTUM, WHERE ARE YOU POSITIONED?

Everything we do has either a positive or a negative impact on our health. There aren’t many things, if any, that would be considered neutral. At the end of the day, we are the ones who are in control of which way our health is heading. For example, if you are wondering which way your health is going, imagine a balance scale. One side is for the healthy things you are doing daily and the other is for the things that impact your health in a negative way. It could be anything from a physical, mental or chemical perspective. Everything you do can be considered a weight on one of the balances. If the activity or thing overall is healthy, then it is placed on the healthy side. If it is overall unhealthy, even if slightly, then it is placed on the unhealthy side. You really want the good to outweigh the bad. If you want to be heading in a positive direction, that’s the bottom line. We need a healthier community and society, one that spurs each other on to make the better changes towards the right direction in health. If your scales are currently tipped towards the unhealthy side or if it is just balanced and stagnant, you need to ask yourself, is this where you really want to be? Are you satisfied with your health or the way it is going? If the answer is no, there is no better time than now to make a change towards the positive direction, with healthier lifestyle choices and healing interventions! If you are looking for a healthier change, and would like to find out how your body is functioning overall, we can be a positive help to your health. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at Little Sprouts Chiropractic. - Dr Anthony Ngo

However, when it comes to the crunch, family members generally support each other in times of need. Analytically, due to the fact of how many ‘positive’ experiences they have had together and more deeply, the cultural endurance is built over the course of generations and time. Though we may not be able to choose our family members, a lot of choice within a family’s make up, in terms of its fundamental structures and beliefs, can be established and tended. These include: Family Values – What the family deems as the sacred beliefs to live by overall. How members treat and respect each other, accept differences, interact with others outside the family unit, set and uphold expectations are all examples of what make up better Family Values. Family Rules, Responsibilities and Routines (3 R’s) – These help reinforce the values of the family and develop the family culture on a daily basis. For a family to institute authenticity and richness in its 3 R’s, the leaders of the family need to ‘practice what they preach’. The establishing of roles and responsibilities (formally or informally) do change with time for each individual member, sometimes dependant on age, position within the family, ability and personality. In the busyness of life, it is always a good idea as leaders to periodically converse with each other and then the members of the family to reinforce and connect with shared values. The Family Feel – This is the feeling beyond words. The sentiment of being loved, supported, nurtured and encouraged to take positively calculated risks in learning experiences are ways to create a sense of value and belonging for individuals within a family unit. I believe at times, ‘choice’ can bring with it even more headaches, particularly with important decisions like education. Though a clear understanding of your family’s values, 3 R’s and feel, is a great starting point when matching a school environment and offerings to what you are wanting to continue, foster and extend within your family. Where the s––≠≠chool becomes your family and there is no other choice.

NUTRITIONIST TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Its nice to think that we can keep aiming for our health & fitness goals during the festive season, and avoid the trappings social gatherings & holidays throw at us. Fat loss goals in particular are difficult to keep sight of during this time. The key to festive happiness without killing your hard earned results so far is to aim for maintenance rather than fat loss. Keep your expectations realistic, make balanced choices, and aim to enjoy yourself a little!

Here are some tips to help... • Be strategic with your portions. Use an entrée plate instead of a dinner plate, you will be less likely to over eat if it’s not in-front of you. • Eat more of the festive colour; green! Make vegetables the first food group to make it onto your plate. Aim to fill half of your plate with vegetables. • Make healthy foods convenient. Keep healthy snacks in the fridge so it’s easy to stay healthy when unexpected guests drop in. These may include, mini quiches, vegetable sticks e.g. carrots, capsicum, cucumber and asparagus with tzatziki, hommus, avocado and vegetable dips i.e. beetroot or pumpkin, and natural yogurt rippled with berries, cacao nibs and chopped nuts. • Make healthy foods fun. Encourage kids to use their creativity with healthy snacks like vegetable kebabs for the BBQ and fruit kebabs for dessert. • Freshen up your refreshments with fresh fruit. Avoid the temptation of soft drinks. Try adding citrus fruit or frozen berries to jugs of water and keep in the fridge. Unleash your festive spirit and add some Christmas favourites like cinnamon sticks or mint leaves.

No matter how hard you train, you can’t outrun your fork! Nutrition support has never been so easy or affordable..

Different Types of Hearing Tests Advertising for “Free Hearing Tests” are very common these days so it is important to understand the different types of basic hearing beep tests commonly used. Most “free” hearing tests are actually screening tests. These are a basic pass or fail test designed to ascertain if a hearing loss may be present or not. You can download these as an app or do them online and can be administered by yourself or commonly at hearing centres by an administration employee, this is why they are free as it requires little or no skill to do. Basically four different beep tones are presented at a level considered to be within normal limits and if you hear it you pass, and if you don’t you fail. However, one should keep in mind these tests are more often extremely inaccurate and many people with normal hearing fail. The assessments are commonly effected significantly by ambient noise, incorrect administration, poor calibration or equipment malfunction and finally skewed results by commissions being paid for failed screenings.

Let’s say, theoretically, you “fail” a hearing screen. You would then look at getting a basic hearing assessment completed to see if there is indeed a hearing loss, how severe it might be and what area of the hearing system the problem may stem from. Because this is a significantly more time consuming test and relies on the skill set of clinician there is usually a charge. This can be directly or commonly built into the price of hearing aids.

results with bone and air conduction then we know that the middle ear and outer ear are letting all the sound through to the inner ear. This means that if there is a hearing loss it would be in the inner ear. If there is difference between the bone and the air conduction results then we know the middle or outer ear is the source of the hearing problem as the inner ear is hearing better than when we go through the outer and middle ear.

This test is called Puretone audiometry and involves finding the point where you just start hearing ten different pitched beeps through a set of head phones. By measuring these thresholds we are testing how sound is being detected through the outer ear, middle ear and then the inner ear, this is known as air conduction. We then find these points again with a special set of headphones called a bone conductor. The bone conductor directs the beeps directly to the inner ear without going through the outer and middle ear.

Now although a hearing test has been completed, this is just a small amount of information and is not meaningful until we determine what this test is for, and then what other assessments may need to take place. Basically there are two reasons for having a hearing test, either for diagnostic or for rehabilitation/treatment purposes. A diagnostic test is solely to ascertain if there is a hearing loss present, where that problem is, what could be could be causing the problem, are there any other areas of the ear of audiotory/balance system that are also effected and finally assisting

with formulating treatment options, whether that is surgical or rehabilitation (eg Hearing devices, Cochlear implants etc). This can involve numerous test batteries sensitive to finding out the above, however it does not measure the difficulties a you are experiencing with communication or the impairment the hearing loss may be giving. A rehabilitation assessment is different in that it is focuses on assessing not just the hearing but also the impairment and communication difficulties. It does use some of the same assessments as a diagnostic assessment, but also includes a lot of tests that measure other things important to communication such as auditory processing and cognition, to name but a few.

CHECK OUT WHAT’S ON FOR NOVEMBER & DECEMBER! ISLAND Hamilton Island, Australia’s premier island destination located at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, will host Northern Queensland’s only Tropfest event - and 2014’s most picturesque! Hosted on the island’s Outrigger Lawn overlooking Catseye Beach, the screening will be made complete with live music and food stalls and a stunning view to match. It’s great the Tropfest team have a Whitsundays venue on board this year, particularly given this year’s Tropfest partnership with GetUp!, the advocacy agency behind the 2014 ReefReels competition. It’s only fitting the best short films from around the country, including the Great Barrier Reef centric Reefreel winner, be shown at the edge of the reef itself! So if you feel like watching the 2014 Tropfest finalists from an idyllic island paradise, pack your bikini, blanket and picnic and come along on Sunday evening, 7 December, for the ultimate evening of Tropfest entertainment.
