CORELIFE.COM.AU Kaylem: “Mum!” Me: “Yes Kaylem” Kaylem: “Can I ask you something?” Me: “Sure, what is it?” Kaylem: “Well, hmmmm.” Me: “What is it Kaylem?” Kaylem: “Is Santa really real Mum?” Me: “What?” After hearing this, my heart sank a little. Not only was my baby boy growing up, he was also questioning the magic that is Christmas. “YES, of course Santa is real.” I replied. Knowing all the while, that deep down he already knew the answer, but would go along with it for me. Do you remember doing that as a kid? As the years past it got harder and harder to run around excited about the sound of hoofs on the roof, when it was dad throwing stones, or the sound of a bell ringing and noises in the garden or finding the half eaten carrot and empty glass of milk. There was a shift of unspoken knowing. First it was about the magic of Christmas for us as kids, then it became about keeping the magic going for Mum and Dad, then creating magic for your own kids and now for me it’s shifting again. Kaylem will happily move into this new understanding, knowing he can now manipulate the situation to get exactly what he wants out of it. “Mum, I really want a new Xbox for Christmas I know it’s expensive so I will ask Santa for this present!” lol You cannot deny that the festive season brings a sense of magic and wonder to us all, no matter how old. The magic of fun, holidays and family, and not forgetting the gift of giving. Merry Christmas to you all Enjoy December xoxox

What are your favorite family Christmas traditions?
Every year we always complain of having a full stomach but you always find room for plenty of Christmas Cheer.
“Christmas Tradition for my family starts with us all getting together to decorate the Christmas Tree. This always brings the Christmas spirit into our home. Christmas Day always begins with the gathering around the Christmas Tree for the sharing of presents. My children are teenagers now but they are still the first to sit around the tree every Christmas morning before the sun even comes up. Our traditional Christmas dinner is always a hot roast lunch but the Baked Ham is the highlight of the table.
Tabagganing or Ice Skating and a highly competitive board or card game
My customs and beliefs surrounding the Christmas season all come from my upbringing in central Canada. Absolute musts on Christmas day are Rum and Nog (Eggnog), a “REAL” Christmas Tree and a Turkey Dinner. Tabagganing or Ice Skating and a highly competitive board or card game – winner takes all! dawn Romanella, prd whitsundays
My Grandma started a tradition is making the old fashioned Plum Pudding and Custard. This always completes the perfect lunch. Every year we always complain of having a full stomach but you always find room for plenty of Christmas Cheer. Christmas for our family is about being with the people you love and it’s a day that always brings family and friends together”

Your local ANZ Mobile Lender. Whether it be refinancing, buying a home to live in or an investment property, looking to build, or if you just want to discuss loan options, contact me wherever, whenever.
Being born in the mid 50’s in Bundaberg, having grandparents north and west of the Burnett River, 7 uncles and aunties and around 50 first cousins, Christmas was fantastic. Starting with midnight mass, then Christmas Dinner, which included plum pudding with shillings in it, eating watermelon and then cricket down on the beach at Agnes Waters. All of these simple things I guess were my favourite traditions. I guess we have changed a lot and these traditions are not as common as one may wish for (in my case anyway). These days I do like to catch up with family and friends when possible. Tony Carmichael, T.C Bricklayers

What is a hashtag? #getreadytolearn Do you dabble in social media? Or have you heard the term ‘hashtag’ referenced on television? What is it? How does it work? Hashtags allow you or your business to join an online conversation by including a word with the symbol # preceding it. Using hashtags turns any word or group of words into a searchable link, allowing anyone searching that label to easily find other related messages within the same social media platform. Hashtags let users find similar content on a topic or search word. Hashtags Whilst they apply to all social networks, hashtags are effective when searching for a topic that interests you, or to follow a current event as it unfolds. Think of our most recent cyclonic event. By following a hashtag thread, you would have seen updates by anyone who is posting related to this topic, which could offer a valuable insight on the cyclone’s position and activity. Hashtags are not limited to big news stories. In fact, its simplicity and ability to unify campaigns across different social networks and websites make it a staple of modern marketing. By using hashtags, you can reach out to a specific audience, one that has confirmed their interest in the topic by following the thread. When using hashtags, no grammar, spacing or punctuation applies, leaving the reader to digest the hashtag and the message it carries. If you click on a word, which has a hashtag in front of it on platforms such as Twitter, you will see the full and most recent conversation where the same hashtag is used. Hashtags also allows the community to voice our opinions unlike ever before. Australia’s Q&A program on the ABC brings Australia’s democratic spirit into the studio by using hashtags. By tagging tweets with #qanda, the national audience can join the discussion on the program, including asking their questions and making their own opinions heard, all by using a hashtag! Businesses can also set up a specific hashtag to include your brand, which becomes an easy way to reference all related posts, such as #coremag. Alternatively, target by location, simply hashtag the region you are targeting, such as #mackay. If you would like to know more about how to effectively use hashtags as part of your marketing toolbox, contact Tolita on 0488117728 or tolita@8seconds.com.au. 8 Seconds, Marketing for your business. LOOKING AT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN BRISBANE?
dance to your own tune STEP OUT AND TAKE A RISK
IN THE TRAIN OF LIFE BE THE ENGINE, NOT A CARRIAGE I was in my mid 20’s before I decided I wanted to achieve in life more than my contemporaries. The first step was to study the lives and attitudes of those that had achieved more than normal. While they differed in sex, age, race and occupation, they all had one thing in common.
THEY DID THEIR OWN THING.
My wise mother said to me “Son, life is like a train traveling through the heat of a desert, the cold of a blizzard, the long pulls up hills and the easy down slopes – but make sure you are the engine and not a carriage”.
“My Dad was a client of Steve’s for over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.” Mark (Fitter)
(07) 4987 7567 2 Borilla St, Emerald office@stevetaylor.com.au
If you want to achieve outside the norm, you must act outside the norm.
The gold medal in life always goes to the contrarian. The man or woman with the courage to dance to their own tune, to step out, to risk, to ignore the jeers from the crowd on the sidelines and walk (as Scott M Peck so eloquently put it) the road less travelled. If you accept that the average person rarely achieves excellence, then, if you seek greatness, it makes absolutely no sense to do what the average person does.
I wish all a safe, happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year. Steve Taylor

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL
SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS
I am not an expert on marketing, even after completing several marketing subjects and attending lots of seminars.
Advice given to clients about marketing is usually more to do with the figures, such as comparing the amount spent with the cost of a full time sales rep, or analysing the sales against the dollar spent. The decision to go out on my own involved making lots of marketing decisions. My determination to open an accounting firm that was different and better than the traditional offering resulted in lots of marketing dilemmas. I knew we needed a website but the budget was tight so I got a basic site developed by a firm that specialised in designing websites for accountants (mistake number 1). Of course we (my team and I) said we were different and then we filled the web site with all the stuff that traditional accounting firms have on their web sites (mistake number 2). You know we listed all our boring services and our boring qualifications and experience.
At Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions it’s all about you, we believe that working together with our clients achieves better results. We listen to what you want from your business and what you expect from us to help you achieve that.
Synergy. Working together, achieving results.
Then we needed a logo and letterhead, so I decided I needed a marketer and was put in touch with someone from Brisbane by a client and he designed our logo and letterhead. We needed to get business cards printed so we went on-line and ordered the highest quality business cards from (****)Print (mistake number 3). While we were there we ordered some calculators with our phone number on and some fridge magnets (mistake number 4). When they turned up the business cards were such poor quality I threw them straight in the bin. The fridge magnets had our number on them but not our name and the calculators when open hid our name and phone number. Our new office required signage, so I sent off our logo to the sign writers (mistake number 5). It looked very pretty on our letterhead but is almost invisible on our building and it cost about $4,000. I soon realised that I needed to get educated about marketing because I was being approached all the time about marketing and I really didn’t know what to do. Accounting firms traditionally don’t advertise because most of their work comes from referrals. One day, I got an e-mail from a website developer who promised to fix our websites. We had two by then and by the way, two bad websites do not equal one good one. They said they would increase the traffic, increase the hits and contacts and put us on the first page of Google and, if they didn’t, we would get our money back. How could I lose? I thought mistake number 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 because I signed up for everything twice. After several months of even worse websites, links not working, information not correct, zero contacts and still being on page 10 of Google, I tried to get my money back. “Oh no”, they said “We got you on page one back in June” and sent me the proof. Apparently, if you googled ‘financial accountant Whitsunday’ Synergy came up on the first page. Tricked! I had approved a list of words they wanted to embed in the website and when someone googled them in the right way Synergy would pop up on the first page. Of course if you googled ‘accountant Mackay’, we are still on page 10. Then I started advertising in Core Life and five marketing books, several conferences and coaching later, I now know it’s the only thing I got right.

The moral of this story is that when it comes to marketing you need to educate yourself because some of our mistakes were small ones but some were quite large and expensive.
CHANGE
is as good as a holiday
Just as a change can be as good as a holiday, a renovation can be as refreshing as a new home. Transform your home into the space you desire, with a renovation or extension to suit your lifestyle now and into the future. From design concept through to project completion, Smith & Sons are Mackay’s renovation and extension specialists. From an overhaul of your bathroom or kitchen, an exterior touch-up or a renovation of your entire home, Smith & Sons provide expert advice and skilled tradesmen so you can expect nothing short of exceptional finishes. Brett and Leah Hargreaves joined the Smith & Sons team early in 2014, after establishing a local reputation for quality workmanship. With more than 13 years in the construction industry, Brett’s experience ranges from large commercial development to new homes, renovations and outdoor living spaces. With the assistance of his wife Leah, the couple have developed Smith & Sons Design Centre on Malcomson Street, a specialist design hub where clients can visualise the look they want to achieve with assistance from design and renovation specialists. “I work closely with each client to determine their individual vision. Our design centre allows people to view and touch displays, browse project boards and chat about what is achievable within their budget. “Their house becomes their home when they fall in love with it, so it is important to me that we get it perfect,” Leah said. The Smith & Sons team is passionate about building, and go above and beyond to ensure you have an exceptional renovation experience. “Renovating shouldn’t be stressful which is why we make the process exciting. Seeing incredible transformations and knowing that I created them is why I love building. Positive feedback from excited clients who love the results is the cherry on the top,” Brett said. Take the first step towards creating your dream home by visiting the Smith & Sons team at the design centre!

Whitsundays 2 Everywhere
When travel and adventure is a passion from a young age, it makes sense to capture the excitement and turn your experience into a career.
grow it from a two vehicle transfer service to a five vehicle transfer and charter business.
Matt and Trudy Pitt have dedicated most of their lives to travel and tourism. Their combined experience is now helping visitors to our region get from A to B, from the Whitsundays to…well…everywhere!
“We realise that we are often a visitor’s first and last impression of their holiday. We have systems in place that double-check each booking to ensure we offer a reliable service.
Matt and Trudy met in the Northern Territory, where Trudy was a tour guide in Litchfield National Park and had come into trouble with a loose wheel. Matt came along and gave her, and her passengers a lift, and the relationship started from that chance occurrence.
“We use smaller vehicles to get people to and from their destinations quicker. We run office hours that suit the travelling public and we offer extra advice to help promote the region,” Matt said.
Trudy’s first job at a ski resort sparked her desire to travel. “Travelling opens you up to experiences and cultures which you would never experience at home. It made me realise that all over the world we are all the same, just different colours and shapes,” Trudy said. The couple sailed into Airlie Beach in 2005, with their oldest son, Will, who was 1 year old at the time. They spent their time part working and part sailing through the Whitsundays, and left two years later on the Dent to Dunk Rally. They fulfilled a lifelong dream of sailing to another country, and maneuvered their vessel through 5m swells on the Coral Sea, to sail to Papua New Guinea and return. They had their second child, Chaz, and moved from Cairns to the Whitsundays. They saw an opportunity to purchase Whitsundays 2 Everywhere and 24 www.corelife.com.au
Whitsundays 2 Everywhere isn’t just an airport transfer service. The company also services the local marinas, and can tailor private charters for mining, business and leisure groups, to take you just about anywhere you want to go. Trudy and Matt are grateful for the enthusiastic staff they have working for them. A small team who are as passionate about customer service and the Whitsundays. “A lot of our team also run their own part-time businesses, from mobile hair salons to pool fencing. They are also entrepreneurs who understand the attention to detail it takes to run a successful business. “They also paddled their hearts out at the Outrigger Whitsunday Battle of the Businesses challenge to win third place. We’re so proud to have each and every one of them working for us,” they said.
The first year in business can be a rocky road to travel, which is why Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions is celebrating its success. Refreshingly, Synergy isn’t your typical accounting practice. Instead of counting your beans, it is more interested in nurturing them, to then watch them grow to phenomenal heights.
late December. As well as making a difference in the lives of her clients, Gillian encourages her team to live their life with purpose, and asked Tamara and Emily to write a ‘bucket list’, to help them establish a balance of personal and professional goals.
“These two girls I have here by my side make the difference,” Gillian said.
“I believe everyone has a purpose in life, and it should align with what you do as a career. My purposes in life are to help people and make a difference, as well as encourage people to think differently and change the status quo.
Tamara McMillan and Emily Lawrence complete the accounting team, and describe Gillian as a supportive role model, who has shaped them into the accountants they have become.
“By thinking outside of the box, we open up new possibilities and come to unique solutions. This is something I can help clients with every day to improve their business,” Gillian said.
“I couldn’t ask for a more supportive work environment. I’ve been working with Gillian for 10 years, and without her encouragement and flexibility, I wouldn’t have been able to return to work after having children. She’s made it possible for me to be a working mum,” Tamara said.
Emily loves to make people smile, which is usually easy to do when it comes to tax refunds, while Tamara is a problem solver, and likes to do something in a different way every day, whether it’s in the office or at home.
Director and professional accountant, Gillian Sandhoff, believes it is the strength and unity of her team which gives her business the edge.
The three accountants have more than a love of numbers in common, they all have a passion for the fur babies in their family. Gillian’s Boxers Rocky and Brandy are almost as fanatical for shoes as Gillian is, however they have a horrible tendency to use them for chew toys. Tamara has a menagerie of animals at home, including two Staffies and too many fish to count.
“There’s always a better way, if you take the time to try different approaches to your routine,” she said. In the New Year, why not take the opportunity to look at your own finances to see if there’s a better way, a more profitable way. Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions will be able to offer investment advice for self-managed superannuation funds in 2015, so make an appointment to see how a fresh approach can set your year up for success.

Rising from the ashes Better Pet Vets
26 www.corelife.com.au
“The firefighters were able to get the animals out of the burning building, and our team immediately started reviving and resuscitating the pets from the smoke inhalation they had suffered. “We can’t thank the QFRS enough for their efforts, without them this would have been a tragedy for many more pets and families,” Holly said. One of the pets who didn’t make it through the fire was Holly and Ashley’s cat, Wallace. “He was out little soul mate. He loved spending time with the girls at the clinic and always gave them lots of hugs and amusement throughout the day. Although it’s a funny thing to say about a cat, he truly had a great sense of humour and loved a practical joke on the girls. “We were absolutely inconsolable when we heard that he hadn’t made it out of the building alive and wasn’t able to be revived,” Holly said. While dealing with their own grief and heartache, the Better Pet Vets team had the agonizing call to make to Misty’s mum, the owner of the other pet who had not made it through the fire, to tell her of the terrible tragedy. “It was difficult to handle. We all cried, and we still do. “Grief is a process and we are still walking through it.” To close the chapter on what was a senseless tragedy, the Better Pet Vets team held a memorial service for the two pets who died that morning. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd who had attended to pay their respects and grieve with the owners. “We felt it was important to acknowledge what had happened and provide the team and the clients a forum that was respectful and reflective. “It was a beautiful day with memorial readings for both pets, and a Scottish bagpipe tribute of Amazing Grace for them both. “A lot of people in the community were angry and upset about what had happened to the animals and their families. It was an opportunity for them to connect with us and for us all to move forward. “In many ways, our clients and patients are what got us through this ordeal. We are very lucky to be surrounded by people who have shown their love and care and we cannot thank them enough,” Ashley said. Just as a Phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor, Better Pet Vets have risen through their own ashes, with strength and determination to provide a service even better than before. Their new ‘pop-up-clinic’ is now open, located directly behind their old premises on Oak Street. It was important to get their services up and running quickly, to continue to offer their services and support to their clients. It was a team effort, one that Holly and Ashley are grateful to have been a part of. “We cannot speak highly enough of our whole team. Without them we couldn’t have achieved what we have so far and will in the future. “We have invested heavily in professional development and training for the entire team, focusing on resilience, adaptability, emotional intelligence, trust, compassion and forming deep connections with one other, patients and clients. This has been invaluable in the way that we have been able to deal with this tragedy and our positive attitude we will carry into our future. “Ashley and I have both tried to be strong and positive leaders and want to look back on this time of upheaval, proud of how we have lead our team. We also want our team to be proud of how they have handled this adversity,” Holly said. “The next chapter for Better Pet Vets is going to be dynamic, innovative and exciting and will continue to bring leading edge veterinary care and services to the pets of Mackay and beyond.” Inspirational words from Better Pet Vet’s owners, Holly and Ashley Goldring, who are still coming to terms with the fire which left their veterinary clinic destroyed and took the lives of two beloved pets. The couple had only left Mackay the afternoon before the blaze, to celebrate Ashley’s birthday at Airlie Beach. The celebrations were short lived as at 1:30 a.m. that morning they received the call to say that a fire was burning out of control at the Oak Street shopping complex, and it had spread to their veterinary hospital. “Our nursing and veterinary team had already been mobilized. However, on arrival the fire was well involved in the hospital, and only firefighters were allowed to enter and exit.
Looking forward with positivity, Better Pet Vets are expanding to include a new practice in the Northern Beaches Shopping Centre, as part of the Coles complex. This is for the convenience of their Northern Beaches clientele, who will soon have a closer clinic. “Having two completely new and separate building projects on the go at the same time has had its challenges and it has been very busy. However, this tragedy has given us the opportunity to redefine what our practice can offer now and in the future. “We are proud to offer more than what people expect from a veterinary clinic, and in light of what our clients have shown us in terms of loyalty and passion for what we do, we want to return the favour by giving even more back. “Watch this space!”

Many dubious bets are placed on Derby Day during the Melbourne Racing Carnival. Some end in triumph, some result in tears, but the rarest of all are those that end in true love. In 2004, after being introduced by a mutual friend, Holly Goldring and Ashley Young knew by the end of that fateful day that the safest bet they could place was on each other. Three years later, the couple decided to leave their stressful city jobs behind, to explore Australia in a Landcruiser. Their travel led them to Mackay, where they saw the opportunity to run their own veterinary hospital, a dream they shared since completing their veterinary studies.
Man’s best friend Holly Goldring and Ashley Young
“We saw an opportunity to provide something new and progressive. We felt that despite being geographically remote from capital cities, this shouldn’t compromise the level of veterinary service available to people’s fur babies here in Mackay,” Holly said. They opened their Oak Street practice of Better Pet Vets in 2009, and later traveled to Holly’s family farm and winery in Western Australia to marry in 2011. Growing up on a farm led Holly into competition showjumping and eventing. This took her to the UK for five years to work with some of the best horses in England, alongside one of the British Olympic Equestrian vets. She took the opportunity to study equine sports medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic and performance muscle therapy, before moving back to Australia. Ashley’s passions extended from land to sea, where he raced dinghies in state and national championships. “I enjoyed the speed and rawness of racing dinghies. When you get it wrong, you find out pretty quickly because you end up in the water. It taught me plenty about being resourceful, overcoming personal fears, resilience and determination, and those are skills I carry with me today,” he said. The couple have made a difference to the lives of pet owners throughout Mackay that reaches further than their veterinary hospital. They set up the first Facebook page in Australia to coordinate the re-homing of lost and found pets in Mackay. The Mackay Lost, Found and Foster page has made a huge impact on getting lost pets home again, quickly, safely and simply. “We are proud of creating such a simple solution to a complex problem which helps people reunite with their mischievous fur babies every day.”
Christmas has come early for the Bowen Basin. A welcome change for communities who have been through a difficult year. Owners of Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, Jamie and Carolyn Fritz, have purchased 10 acres of land on Goonyella Road in Moranbah, to create an automotive hub to service the rural mining communities. The news of a stronger economy and more employment options is a welcome Christmas present for a community who have been dealing with loss of jobs in the mining industry. The concept evolved from the couple’s love of their local community, and the desire to bring the city to the bush, by attracting customers from Mackay and Emerald to shop in Moranbah. “Once we became the only Ironman 4X4 distributor in the Bowen Basin, we attracted customers from Mackay, Emerald and further afield to shop with us in Moranbah. We want this trend to continue, to bring further economic opportunities to Moranbah, so we are tendering interest for businesses to join Moranbah Auto Hub, a shopping centre which encompasses everything automotive,” Carolyn said.
Jamie & Carolyn Moranbah Discount Tyres & Mechanical
MDTM will be relocating its original business to the Hub, which will continue to include mechanical services, auto electrical, tyre sales and repairs centre, Ironman 4X4 accessories and parts centre and fitting shop,Repco Auto Parts sales centre, Holden Colorado,Isuzu, Toyota and Volkswagen Amarok Service Outlet, and more recently Moranbah’s Towing Service. Jamie and Carolyn are asking for expressions of interest from other businesses who wish to be a part of this automotive hub, including windscreen and window tinting businesses, panel beating, truck parts, a service station and also a café, just to name a few. “It will be a supportive environment where businesses can join together to provide a one stop location for people needing automotive assistance. The idea is to share business and keep it local. “If we stick together as a community, we will get through the hard times. This adjustment period needed to happen, as previously the cost of living and inflated wages made it very difficult for small businesses to keep people employed.
“We have been here before many times, and we have come out the other side. This time won’t be any different. Our community will come out the other side, but better for it due to lessons learned along the way. “Our community spirit is what keeps families here,” Carolyn said. When times get tough, the tough get going, and while tough times may still be ahead, it will be local community support that sets a stronger Moranbah up for the future. Jamie and Carolyn wish their clients, colleagues and community a safe and happy holidays.

“I have fond memories of watching the Rabbito’s play from our balcony.” Born in Turkey, Ali Zengin was brought to Australia when he was 2 years old and grew up in Redfern, Sydney, across the road from Redfern Oval, the home of the Rabbito’s. With an interest in fashion, Ali managed an exclusive men’s fashion boutique underneath the Hilton Hotel called Clifford Gordon. “We would supply high-end suits and outfits to television shows such as Star Search and Perfect Match. We had a lot of celebrity clientele as our stock featured many one-off original designs,” Ali said. It taught Ali the importance of personal service and he soon found the courage to freelance for a fashion agency, representing Australian and international labels. “I launched Scotch & Soda in Australia and had three, unisex clothing shops in the western suburbs of Sydney named RitAli. “Some of my best clients were car salesmen, who would come in looking for a tie and walk out with a complete wardrobe. I was often told that my talents were wasted in retail and that I should be selling cars, so I closed my shops and began my career with Blacktown Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Mazda, 24 years ago,” Ali said.
Ali Zengin Goodalls
Ali moved to the Gold Coast in 2001 and, throughout his 24 years in the automotive industry, has enjoyed numerous accolades and awards recognizing his commitment to the industry. Most memorable was a week’s holiday to the island of Sabah in Borneo with Chrysler Jeep and Dodge. Then after improving his result the following year to win a week in Vietnam for achieving a top five salesperson result throughout Australia. In May this year, Ali moved to Mackay to take on the position of Used Vehicle and Wholesale Manager for Goodalls Motor Group. “Goodalls feels more like a big family than a company. We have a sense of unity, purpose and belonging. I can honestly say that I am proud to be a part of the Goodalls Family,” Ali said. Since arriving at Goodalls, Ali has worked towards making used cars more affordable, with prices in line with large cities. “Our competitiveness means we are selling cars to people across the country. We don’t believe you should have to travel to a big city to find a great deal. People from the cities are finding their deals at Goodalls,” he said. Ali has three children, Jaylan his eldest son is 21 and finishing university this year, Jarnay, who is Ali’s princess, is 18 and studying graphic design, and his youngest son, Jyran, is 16 and a talented hip-hop artist who is known as Tiny Tones.

FIXED RATE DEMAND SPIKES TO eight month high
With interest rates sitting at record lows, and set to stay this way for the short term, an increasing number of borrowers are opting to fix their mortgage, causing demand for this loan type to hit an eight month high.
Local Mortgage Choice mortgage broker Graham Bowling said with further cuts to the official cash rate in the coming months unlikely, borrowers seem intent on fixing their mortgage while rates are low. “No doubt borrowers’ appetite for fixed rate loans has also been provoked by the ongoing competition for business among Australia’s lenders who continue to offer sharp pricing, significant mortgage discounts and other borrower incentives,”Mr Bowling said. “It is pleasing to see that borrowers are taking advantage of the current home loan market by actively responding to lender incentives and making informed home loan choices.”

Overall, fixed rates were particularly popular in Queensland, with this loan type accounting for 31.25% of all loans written in this state in October - 3.51% up on the month prior. Despite a 1.19% drop in demand month on month, variable rate home loans continue to prove most popular with borrowers overall, accounting for 73.36% of all loans approved in October.
“Regardless of whether borrowers choose a fixed or variable rate mortgage, they will be sure to secure themselves a sharp deal,” Mr Bowling said. “With record low interest rates and ongoing lender competition, the prospects of getting a great deal on your home loan couldn’t be better!” For more information contact Graham Bowling on 07 4957 7786

According to national home loan approval data from Mortgage Choice, fixed rate home loans accounted for 26.64% of all loans written in October - up from 25.45% recorded the month before.

SELLING YOUR HOME?
HO! HO! HO! Is it time to go? December has arrived and so has the need to sell your house through the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Don’t be concerned, it may be a little more challenging though there are some advantages. 7 advantages to selling your property this time of the year: 1. Most buyers are feeling happy and more relaxed and in a better frame of mind to make a final decision. Why.. often you hear of people buying a property while travelling through a town while on holidays. Some past clients tell me they bought their home in Mackay while stopping here on holidays. 2. Less properties on the market to what there could be otherwise. For sellers who have been too busy to prepare their property for sale before Christmas are likely to do so late January, early February.
houses have lights and decorations and looking their best. 6. More time off work for buyers to look. No need for them to rush back to work. They can continue to look until they find the right property and make a final decision to purchase. 7. Buyers have been pre approved by their financier with finance in place and often prefer a short settlement to move in as quickly as possible.

3. Serious buyers will be looking during this time. In my years in real estate, serious buyers are keen to find a property to call home. This urgency often leads to purchasing sight unseen from the internet. This is why I choose to market properties with video as well as photographs, to show more features and attributes.

4. Your home may be looking its best during the holidays as you have prepared to welcome family and friends. A house often feels more welcoming at Christmas time. Though, go easy with the decorations and remember when selling it’s a must to de clutter. A lovely tree as a focal feature, a wreath or two and bowls of baubles with simple fairy lights is enough. 5. The neighbourhood may look more appealing if other

Christmas Cocktails Perhaps the real reason that Rudolph’s nose is red is, because like many of us, he enjoys a tipple of something special during the silly season. Show your holiday colours and give your guests a party to remember with a selection of themed holiday cocktails. This collection of magical mixology will make your spirits bright, so you can jingle all through the night. Drink responsibly.
Candy Cane Nothing brings back memories of Christmas glee quite like the first lick of a candy cane. This dessert cocktail is not so light on the hips, but playfully delightful on the lips.
Method
Crush candy canes and lay them out on a flat platter. Rim your glass by dipping it in a sweet syrup, such as golden or maple, then coat the rim in the smashed candy cane. In a shaker with ice, mix one shot of a berry vodka, or a berry liqueur; one shot of peppermint schnapps; one shot of white crème de cacao, or any white chocolate liqueur and half a shot of grenadine. Strain and pour into your glass and top up with a half milk, half cream mixture. Add a spritz of creaming soda to the top and stir. Garnish with candy cane.
Oh Christmas Tree A naughty and indulgent twist on an after dinner mint, delight your guests with a decadent after dinner cocktail.
Method
Crush chocolate mint biscuits and lay them out on a flat platter. Rim your glass with the crushed biscuits by dipping in a sticky chocolate sauce first. In a shaker with ice, mix one shot of crème de menthe; one shot of white crème de cacao and half a shot of vodka. Strain and pour into your glass and top up with a half milk, half cream mixture. Stir to achieve a creamy green colour. Add chocolate flakes to the top for decoration as well as a floating mint chocolate.

TROPIC Temple Bek Roberts, Mark Roberts, Pete Venarie “It’s where we are, it’s what we do.”
Bringing you heavenly tunes from the tropics, Bek Roberts, Mark Roberts and Pete Venarie make the talented trio, Tropic Temple. Mark and Bek have been performing together for more than nine years, with the melody of music bringing them together. They were two members of a trio band, and as Bek described, love blossomed. Pete is a drummer for another local band, the Corey Harris Trio, and had the opportunity to drum with Bek and Mark earlier this year. “With no chance to rehearse together, Pete joined us onstage and the gig absolutely went off. We were onstage for three hours, but it felt like we’d been playing together forever. He brought an amazing energy, so no questions asked, he was our new drummer,” Mark said. The merging of artists has meant the covers playlist has grown, to include the alternative rock anthems of Paramore and Alanis Morissette, as well as crowd favourites such as All the Boys in Town. “We have a few mashups of popular songs to keep people on the dance floor. We have a lot of fun with our music, and we’re here to entertain, so we make sure our audience is loving what we’re playing,” Pete said. The trio performed at the recent Airlie Beach Music Festival, a weekend they all describe as the best of their lives.
“It was a very special time for us all. We’re still on a high, we’re pumped to continue, the vibe was incredible,” Mark said. “It wasn’t so much as a who’s who of music, but more like wow who’s that? The talent at the festival was mind-blowing. We stood there a couple of times and pinched ourselves, not believing it was real,” Pete said. “We wrote three originals to perform at the festival, and they were really well received. The enthusiasm from the crowd was electric, and people were still singing one of our originals after the concert had finished,” Bek said. Bek had written the lyrics when she was 24, and she describes the sound that Pete and Mark added as giving it a dirty edge. “It’s a song you can really get into, with a good beat, a bit of rock gravel,” she said. With the popularity of their originals from the festival, Tropic Temple are now setting their sights on recording their debut album. Tropic Temple have both acoustic and digital drum kits, to tailor the sound level depending on the noise restrictions of the venue. They can perform as loud or quietly as desired. Visit their Facebook page, Tropic Temple, for contact details to secure bookings. With a bit of sass, and a lot of musical talent, Tropic Temple are rocking the heart of Airlie, having fun at every gig. “That’s what we’re all about. Enchanting etiquette how to be the life of the party
Making a douchebag of yourself at a Christmas party never ends well... Ripping your clothes off and pouring Champagne over your head as you streak down the main street may be a laugh at the time, but you will probably find yourself being greeted with a demotion rather than a promotion when you drag your hung-over body through the door Monday morning. The office becomes awkward and, all of a sudden, you realise your shenanigans have damaged your image far more than you had anticipated. This is completely avoidable of course. You can still be the life of the party while keeping your dignity intact.
Mingle
Time to put on your beautiful smile and make the rounds. You may not like every person you work with, but it’s an opportunity to show you’re mature enough to engage with everyone in the office. Your positive attitude and friendliness won’t go unnoticed and, at the very least, you may make someone’s night by giving them the time of day.
Drink responsibly
If you’re not the sober driver, then finding a balance between bored and blotto can be tricky. On one hand you want to join in the frivolity but, on the other, you don’t want to be ‘that person’ who spews over the boss and needs to be carried to a taxi. Eat a decent amount of food to help absorb the alcohol you drink, and consider nonalcoholic mixers in-between drinks. A glass of cola in a short glass doesn’t look any different from a rum and cola.
Don’t be stupid, Cupid
Office hook-ups are rarely classy. While you are both adults and entitled to a bit of fun, there are a few factors to consider. Pashing Adam from Accounts. Will you be able to look him in the eye Monday morning? Will the romantic rendezvous only result in a broken heart? You know the rest of the office will gossip about it. How will you handle that?
Zip your lip
Office relationships can sometimes be hostile. We weren’t put on this earth to get along with absolutely everyone. However, the office Christmas party isn’t the occasion to unload a magazine of verbal bullets. No one likes a negative nelly It may have been a tough year. You may be upset that you were overlooked for a promotion and you might not like the way that some policies have been handled at work. However, this occasion isn’t the time to bring up those concerns. Remember that the invisible line dividing real friends and colleagues can become blurred after too many drinks. So choose your words and actions wisely.

After performing at this year’s Whitsunday Reef Festival, singer and entertainer, Tahlia Tabone, watched as a new life opened up before her eyes. The 18-year-old performer from Melbourne was feeling unsure of who she was or where she was heading, until Airlie Beach opened her world. “Airlie was a blessing in disguise. I had been working two jobs in my hometown of Berwick, before I spent two weeks here for the Reef Festival. I fell in love! Making the decision to move to Airlie Beach was the greatest thing I have done for myself both musically and mentally.” “It’s the people, the place and the person I am when I’m here. I have amazing people to guide me, including my manager and dear friend, Tracey Lord, who have encouraged my independence,” Tahlia said. Tahlia grew up in a musical family and it has always had a strong influence on her life. As a toddler, she watched her parents rehearse theatre and from age five she was singing at her father’s shows. She was cast in numerous musical theatre productions, including The Melbourne Musical, ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’. “In most productions I would normally be cast in a ‘diva’ role. However, when I was given the chance to play Snoopy, it gave me the opportunity to show my quirky side. I loved not taking myself seriously,” Tahlia said. At age 16 Tahlia starred in her own successful one-woman cabaret show, consisting of jazz, swing and lounge, 60’s Motown and rock hits from the 80’s and 90’s. “I have always been an entertainer and performer as well as a singer. I love interacting with the crowd in an intimate style show using comedy. Making people laugh is the ultimate,” she said. She experienced the powerful highs and lows of the television series, The Voice, when she auditioned for the series earlier this year. “Auditions, flights back and forth to Sydney, photo shoots and interviews, the journey was intense. On the last day of auditions I competed against some amazing singers and it just wasn’t meant to be. “When no chairs turned, that moment was a realisation for me that I had so much growing up to do, mentally and musically,” Tahlia said. Tahlia performs at many Airlie Beach venues, including Beaches, Sorrento’s, Barcelona and more. She is in the process of writing her own music and you can send her support on her Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TahliaSingerEntertainer or to contact for bookings phone 0400181248. She will be available to be booked for entertainment and events from January. “I’m loving every second of living here, doing what I love for a living and sharing that with such a beautiful community.” www.corelife.com.au 47
Twas the night before Christmas… and all over Mackay, families gathered with excitement, looking for reindeer in the sky.
Every family celebrates special occasions in their own way. Christmas Eve is no exception. Some families host a party to welcome Christmas at midnight, where others will try to get the children off to bed as early as possible. Many cultures celebrate Christmas Eve as much as Christmas Day and, given the excitement and anticipation it brings, it makes sense to capture the magic of Christmas for longer, with a sacred or sentimental tradition on the 24th.
Here are a few suggestions to turn Christmas Eve into as much fun as Christmas Day.
Pyjama party gift box
Romance for two
In the afternoon, gather the family together to open their special Christmas Eve gift boxes. Suggested contents can include; Cookie dough mixture to make cookies for Santa
If you’re escaping the madness of a large family Christmas this year, make the most of the peace and quiet by enjoying a romantic evening.
New summer pyjamas A special ornament to hang on the tree A Christmas movie and instant popcorn A new Christmas mug with a sachet of hot chocolate A special key for Santa if you don’t have a chimney Bake cookies in the afternoon, then everyone puts on pyjamas before watching a holiday movie with popcorn. Hang your special ornaments on the Christmas tree and sing a favourite Christmas carol. Hang the special key near the front door so Santa can get in. Enjoy a mug of hot chocolate and a warm cookie, before setting out the snacks for Santa and
Purchase a small and meaningful gift for your loved one and then enjoy a walk along the beach or an afternoon at the movies. Find a restaurant that’s open for a romantic dinner, where you exchange your special gifts. Finish the evening with a drive to look at beautifully decorated homes, and enjoy the beauty of Christmas lights. No clean up or cooking, just relaxation on a magical night.
Leaving evidence of Santa The belief in Santa Claus is ultimately what creates magic and excitement on Christmas. At some point in time, you’ll have a child return home from school proclaiming that Santa isn’t real. You can give Santa a helping hand in keeping the belief for a few more years, by starting these traditions on Christmas Eve. Muddy footprints and glitter – while it may take a bit of cleaning up, there’s nothing more magical for children to wake on Christmas morning to see Santa’s footsteps through the house. Recreate the reindeer – it’s hard for children to sleep on Christmas Eve, so announce Santa’s arrival by jingling bells in a glass jar, softly at first and gradually make it louder and louder. When the bells are at their loudest, scrape the ceiling using a broom handle to sound like Santa’s sleigh landing on the roof. After a quick rustle in the lounge, scrape the ceiling as Santa takes off, with bells ringing loudly, fading out to a soft jingle. As the eldest of three children, my parents pulled this trick on me, which converted me back into a believer for at least another three years!

The gift of giving While it’s fun to receive gifts, there’s no doubt that the real joy in Christmas is giving. There are a number of ways that you can instill this into your children by making it a tradition. To make room for new Christmas clothes and toys, use Christmas Eve morning to bundle up old clothes and toys that are no longer needed. Explain to your children that there are needy children who may not receive anything on Christmas, and this is a way you can help them. Donate food, clothes, toys and money to local charities of your choice that accept these donations. Take your children shopping for a new toy that you can donate to a hospital or children’s organisation who can gift it to a child in need on Christmas.

Shopping for her? Here are 5 simple rules to follow She’s your leading lady. Your biggest fan. Your loudest cheerleader. She could be your mum, your grandmother, girlfriend or wife. You want to buy her that perfect gift. The one that says everything that words can’t, to let her know just how much she means to you. We’ll admit, we’re not the easiest of creatures to buy for. So, we’ve developed the ’5 rules of Christmas shopping’ to guide you toward success.
We appreciate effort
Know that you will already score points for trying. If we can tell you’ve made a genuine effort to buy something from the heart, we will most likely love it. If you’ve grabbed a discounted DVD from the sale aisle at Big W on Christmas Eve, we’re probably not going to love that.
Step away from the home ware department
If it’s a utensil that we use to cook or clean, then we don’t particularly want it as a gift, unless of course, we have specifically asked for it. If the vacuum cleaner is broken, then by all means, buy a new one. However, it shouldn’t appear wrapped under the Christmas tree.
Keep it family appropriate
We love it when you buy us lingerie, but no one feels comfortable when a pair of crotch less panties is unveiled ceremoniously in front of great aunt Betty. AWKWARD. Perhaps keep the embarrassing gifts for an intimate and private occasion.
Diamonds truly are a girl’s best friend.
Lavish and lovely, every girl loves the sparkle of classy new jewellery. Take hints from what your lady already wears to see if she prefers gold or white gold. Take one of her necklaces, bracelets or rings into the store with you to ensure you purchase the correct size.
Go one step further
We love it when you remember our favourite things, but we love it more when you take our favourites to the next level. As an example, our favourite lipstick is a gift we appreciate, but if you purchase a pretty compact mirror and had a romantic message engraved on the back to accompany our lipstick, that’s going one step further. It’s that additional thought which will touch our heart and be cherished forever. We love it when you take the sentiment to the next level. www.corelife.com.au 51

The Andreou Opal Family
“Whitsunday Opals and Didgeridoos” is a second generation family owned and operated business that spans from a passion originating more than half a century ago. “I saw opals for the first time in London in 1959 and developed a passion that has never left me to this day and never will. It has coloured all the days of my life” comments father Tony Andreou. Together with his wife, Suzanne, they first headed out to the Sapphire mines of Anakie and Emerald in the late 60’s then Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy and Queensland Opal mines soon after in 1971. Since then they never looked back. Before long they were wheeling and dealing, buying opal mines and loose stones and selling wherever they could to support their growing family of six boys (Anthony, Dean, Chris, Alex, Isaac and Imran) and later their only girl Sofia. “I remember being dragged around from opal mine to sapphire mine, living out of a Panel van, swapping opals for other gems, accommodation, food, whatever we needed to get by…It was a tough life in those days but WOW! What an adventure and what an education.” Comments son and manager Alex Andreou. “We learnt at a young age how to cut opals, how to sell and how to survive under any circumstances… My parents still laugh about me stealing their customers at 5 years old!”…Ha ha! Over the years, the Andreou’s have had businesses in Sydney, Cairns, Coolangatta, Mermaid Beach and Byron Bay before finally settling in Airlie Beach 16yrs ago. “Later in the 90’s, I met my wife, Danielle, an Aboriginal lady from the Wiradjuri Tribe of New South Wales. Since then Aboriginal art has also become an integral part of our business. I just had to learn how to play Didgeridoo” says Alex. Each of the family members have played their part and added their own personality and touch of insanity to contribute to the success of Whitsunday Opals. Chris took the lead in Opal cutting then everyone had a go. Isaac paved the way to jewellery design and customisation and Sofia took it into the new age of computer animated CAD design whilst Dean was the reliable backbone keeping everyone in line. Today, Whitsunday Opals is an Airlie Beach institution being one of its longest standing local businesses. “Customisation is our specialty. Hand select your own gemstone and have our family custom design your own unique piece of jewellery” Alternatively, tell us your travel experience and have award winning Aboriginal artists paint your story on a Didgeridoo or canvas painting with free airmail worldwide. It’s a blast, we have a Didgeridoo lesson at the shop everyday at 5pm! Come and meet the family and see one of Australia’s greatest collections of gems, Aboriginal art and jewellery. “Its not just a job to us. Our work is a part of our heritage and that is the passion that we look forward to sharing with you.”

Lachy and Ted Griffiths Swimming with Tiger Sharks, kite-surfing open water to French Polynesian atolls, scaling unclimbed mountains and teaching Inuit’s how to drag sleds with kites across Alaskan glaciers. To most of us, this seems like the ultimate adventure bucket-list, but to brothers Lachlan and Edward Griffiths, it’s the adventure they live for. Known to their mates as Lachy and Ted, the brother’s often are mistaken for twins, but Lachy is two years older. The brothers grew up in Mackay, with McCready’s Creek and the Coral Sea on their back doorstep. They grew up in or on the water, learning how to camp, fish, swim and boat from a young age. Ted continued his passion for the water by working at Hayman Island, while Lachy lived to kiteboard, when the sport was still in its grass roots stage. Lachy’s most recent adventure was off the coast of Tahiti in French Polynesia. He and a companion, Jay Whittem, kite boarded between Islands in the Tuamotu Archipelago, 60 www.corelife.com.au
the largest chain of atolls in the world, 300 nautical miles east of Tahiti. This adventure is believed to be a world first. “We spent about a month kite boarding from atoll to atoll. The atolls are relatively bare, just a thin stretch of reef which used to be the rim of a volcano. “They aren’t elevated, so we had to trust a hand-held compass to guide us through the open water. We knew if something went wrong then we would be in trouble. All we had was a VHF radio and some flares, water on our back, a lighter and a spear gun to catch our food. “We got hit by a violent rain squall at one stage where my mate lost his board, it took hours to wait it out and continue. No matter how prepared you are, you can’t account for every failure that could happen, but that’s what makes it an adventure,” Lachy said. From one extreme to another, Lachy has also taken his kite board to remote frozen islands in Alaska. During a month off from work, Lachy flew to Seattle where a local magazine caught his attention. He
read about a man who had been kite boarding a remote Alaskan glacier, so he got in touch with the magazine who told him how to locate the Alaskan. “He told me he was always looking for people to have expeditions with, so we planned a trip to Nunivak Island, which is covered in snow nine months of the year. “We travelled 160 nautical miles on our snowboards, with a sled harnessed to us, getting towed by our kites. It was too cold for our GPS devices to work and our water bottles would freeze even if you tried to keep them thawed against your body, so when we got separated in a blizzard it was a rough experience. “We made it to a hunter’s cabin where we based ourselves for daily expeditions. The wildlife and scenery was incredible. It island is inhabited by Inuit’s, whom we had to get permission from to venture through their land. We gave them kite lessons and they were intrigued by using it to get around,” Lachy said. Ted’s love of the ocean has led to
him pushing the boundaries with what he can accomplish on the water. He sailed a 14ft catamaran solo from Mackay to Airlie, in swells where men in 60ft boats chose to stay in dock. His journey took four days and three nights, where he camped on some of the remote islands along his journey. When he heard that the Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club was going to dispose of one of their old lifesaving row boats, Ted grabbed hold of it to restore. Working alongside his dad, they chopped the rear end out and installed an outboard motor, and fully restored the wreck into their pride and joy. “It’s taken us thousands of miles, to all the local islands and on countless journeys. My mates give me a bit of grief, asking if I’m going out in ‘that canoe’, but it adds an adventure element to going out on the water. “It’s a 40-year-old piece of Mackay history, an old row that we were able to save,” Ted said. Ted and Lachy hope to take the

The brothers have shared many adventures at home and across the globe together. They swam with Tiger and Bull sharks off the coast of Tahiti, and discovered schools of smaller, more aggressive sharks on remote reefs while they were sailing in-between the Cook Islands and Tonga. Despite their many overseas adventures, they love coming home to Mackay, where just as many adventures await. While working at Cape Gloucester doing carpentry, Ted and his dad talked about a mountain they saw regularly, Mount Bertha. They asked at the local pub if anyone had ever climbed it, but it appeared it hadn’t been scaled. Ted and a few mates set off to scale the 560 metre peak. With no walking tracks they had to bush-bash their way to the top, past waterfalls and through creeks.
They took a plaque to leave at the summit, and then descended that same day. Ted and Lachy have a relationship closer than most, brothers who rarely have an unkind word to say about one another. “He’s my wingman. If ever in doubt, or if ever we’re in trouble, he’s got the level-headed, clarity of mind necessary to get us out of it,” Lachy said. Ted commented, “We put ourselves completely at mercy of the elements, so there will be scary situations, but it’s challenging yourself to come out of it alive that puts you to the ultimate test. “It awakens intelligence you didn’t even know you had out of sheer necessity. You’re not thinking about tomorrow, all you’re concentrating on is the here and now. You live in the moment. “It brings out your best, and nothing else matters, except right now.

Iconic Bride of the month
EMMA CARR “One of the first things we were told when we started planning our wedding was the importance of a quality photographer. After all, the only thing left from your wedding when everything is said and done are the photos. We are more than happy with the decision we made choosing Iconic Bride. From not only their professionalism on the day, but also the way they’ve looked after us following the wedding in the development of our album. “Norina has a way of keeping everything moving and making everyone happy without adding stress to the day. She told us some of the horror stories that she had encountered at past weddings so we knew that she could handle just about any situation.” “Glen and I were able to relax on the photo tour knowing that Norina had everything under control. “It was amazing the amount of feedback we had from a lot of our guests about the relaxed nature of Norina and her ability to make everyone feel comfortable. It really did feel like she was a friend that we had invited to the wedding, just carrying a camera around. We were quite sad when it was time for her to pack up and leave!”
Introducing Mr and Mrs Carr
How did Glen propose? We had been overseas on holidays for almost 6 weeks. I was certain that Glen was going to propose at the Grand Canyon or in the snow in Canada but he didn’t. I had given up all hope on anything happening, but he surprised me one night in Fiji before we went home. Glen organised for a private picnic dinner on the beach away from everyone. Then a local musician came up to us singing ‘When you say nothing at all’ by Ronan Keating on acoustic guitar. Glen got down on one knee and proposed and we danced on the beach to the song. What song did you walk down the aisle to? ‘Resolution’ by Matt Corby Any silly moments that you look back on and laugh? We ordered the boys’ suits months in advance. When we went to try them on we discovered that they were all too big for them. The boys looked like they were dressed in clown clothes. Glen and one of his groomsmen ended up racing to the stores and buying all new outfits within 30 minutes and saved the day. Any moments of terror or something that didn’t quite go right? The only thing on the news in the lead up to our wedding day was about Cyclone Ita. It was supposed to hit the weekend of our wedding. Lucky for us the cyclone left us alone until the day after the wedding. There were a few worried faces the night of the wedding wondering how they would get home tomorrow. We ended up spending the day after the wedding watching a category one cyclone cross the coast from the penthouse at Coral Sea Resort.

RECONNECTING
Body, Mind and Spirit Let Food be thy Medicine and Let Thee Body Heal THyself. My unstoppable belief in the body’s ability to heal itself is grounded in what I see every week in my clinic. different clients coming in after receiving a diagnosis that leaves them confused and saddened about what step to take next. Consider the three biggest killers, heart disease, cancer and diabeties. Obesity levels are increasing worldwide, putting a further strain on the already stretched mainstream health system. However, all of the so called diseases are diet and life style related. The positive side of this is that we have complete control over our health. We can reclaim our health from the pharmaceutical and Monsanto corporations and make daily choices to be well, in mind, body and spirit. Just imagine for a moment that you could become your own medicine man or woman, that your body and mind could change your health around. We know this can happen. We just need to read medical studies where they used the placebo and the participants had health changes while on the placebo. These are great studies of the power of the body and mind.
Lisa Rankin MD says:
“To say you can heal yourself is kind of a misnomer. As I elucidate in great detail in Chapter 3 of Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself, the data suggests that your body can heal itself, but it does so much more effectively when the process is facilitated by the right kinds of healers who support the body’s self-healing process. These may include
doctors and nurses, but they may also include therapists, acupuncturists, energy healers, naturopaths, shamans, and many other modalities of healing practitioners. A combination of positive belief on the part of your provider, and nurturing care that leaves your amygdala feeling calm and safe, has been scientifically proven to improve health outcomes.” Bottoms Up’s mission is to allow our clients the space to reclaim their health through reconnecting with their body and mind and spirit. We do this with colonic hydrotherapy, massage, healings, and counselling and retreats offering juice fasting. We work with clients with a range of health concerns from cancer to constipation.
Its not about giving the fish medicine its about changing its water.
Merry Christmas and a very big thankyou to all of our amazing clients who have supported Bottoms Up this year. It has been our pleasure in working with you to change your water. To see you full of abundance and vitality. May your Christmas be everything you hoped for!

the allure of youth sssshhhhh….it’s our secret. The best gift you can give a loved one is time, and while this isn’t always possible, turning back the clock on ageing is. There are a range of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments that we can perform at Allure, to remove the stress of the silly season and give you a refreshed appearance for the new year. You may have heard the term, Microdermabrasion, but wondered what it is? It’s a Hollywood trend which has become mainstream and affordable in recent years. It’s known as an ‘instant facelift’ by exfoliating the upper layers of the skin to reveal a younger-looking complexion. Used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle treatments, it is possible to look years younger. Every time we smile, laugh, frown or crinkle our nose, our facial muscles create lines and wrinkles. They are the sign of a life well lived, but for those who are concerned with how they alter their appearance, we have a number of treatments which can help. Injectable muscle relaxants work by relaxing the wrinkle-causing muscles that cause people to frown or squint, creating an improved appearance. At
Allure Clinic we only use the original tried and tested anti-wrinkle treatment that has over 2200 studies published since 1966. Dermal Fillers can be used for minor corrections, deep wrinkles and volumising. The results can last from 9 to 12 months, however some of the new dermal fillers available in Australia are lasting up to 24 months. Dermal fillers are made from a natural complex sugar that is found naturally in skin tissue, and can assist in skin hydration and also combines with collagen and elastin to provide skin structure and elasticity. Vital to having anti-aging treatments is to have a natural and balanced look where friends and family may notice how fresh and rejuvenated you look. It is a fine art of subtle and refined changes that give you a naturally youthful appearance. This is why Allure Aesthetic Rejuvination Clinic is known as Mackay’s anti-wrinkle specialist. Come and speak to the team at Allure, located on River Street under the riverfront apartments, in-between Metro Café and Phoenix Restaurant, to ask about our festive skin treatment packages. Give the gift of vitality, with Allure Clinic. www.corelife.com.au 71

There is, of course, important factors that should be considered, such as how much muscle or fat are we actually talking about? Does a kilogram of muscle have the same volume as a kilogram of fat? Why do the scales remain the same if my pants or dress size decrease along with the belly bulge? What are the benefits of having a lower body-fat percentage? The answer is simple - monitor your diet, burn the calories with exercise, decrease your body-fat percentage and look healthier! Obviously, just like there are several ways to peel an orange, there are also several ways to get into shape! Whether it be increasing your muscle mass and lifting weights or focusing on cardiovascular exercise and improving your fitness level. Either way it’s all beneficial! Here at Anytime Fitness Mackay we have an expert team of professionals with a combined knowledge base of over 30 years, so it is safe to say we know what we are talking about. With Anytime Fitness being the largest and No.1 fitness chain both in Australia and globally, with 24/7 access we offer our members and guests convenience at an affordable price anywhere, ‘Anytime’.
also, just in case you were actually wondering, a kilogram of muscle takes up less space on your body than a kilogram of fat. hence the term ‘muscle weighs more than fat’ being fact and not fiction. The team at Anytime Fitness Mackay would like to wish all our members, friends and families a happy and safe Christmas and New Year break with their loved ones! - Mathew Chilingirian Owner, Anytime Fitness Mackay

the battle to balance this festive season
It’s the festive season and the battle to balance our health and fitness goals with the pure joy of food, alcohol and inactivity begins in earnest… for some of us. Others will simply raise the white flag and get back to being healthy next year. If you are worried about putting on weight this year, I have some good news, and some bad news, for you from a recent study...
GOOD NEWS
The average person gains far less weight over the holiday period than we may fear, with that figure being less than a kilogram.
BAD NEWS
Most of us will not lose that half a kilo or so…. Ever. So it builds up year after year – in fact the same study showed in the US that the small gain every year in the holidays multiplies over many years, and is a major factor in the obesity levels for the entire country. The other thing to remember is that these are averages, and already overweight folks were at risk of gaining far more than the small amount the average person does. You have to enjoy yourself at Christmas and while you have time off and family around, but you can make some simple, smart choices to help your health and waistline:
Remember, alcohol shuts down your fat burning
Anything you eat while you drink will get stored as fat. Eat natural, high protein, unprocessed, green, and fresh. Avoid sugar and processed carbs.
Stay active in between drinks
A good game of half cut backyard cricket is not only good for your health it actually makes your beer taste better. Go for a walk after every meal.
Eat high sugar foods only occasionally
If you are concerned with gaining fat but want to drink, avoid sugar all together. It’s going straight to your bum twice as fast because of the wine.
Your body needs you
Keep training! Hit the gym and aim for 3 weights sessions consisting of full body compound exercises per week. Nothing keeps your metabolism cooking for days like weight training.
Join a gym
Most are 24/7 and quiet over the holiday period. It’s a great time to start your New Year’s Resolution instead of waiting until the damage is done! Some will even have special pre Christmas deals to save you $$$. Good luck and Merry Festivus! Corey Whibley

Acupuncture! What is all the fuss about? WHAT ACTUALLY DOES WORK, AND WHAT IS HYPE AND HOW CAN WE TELL THE DIFFERENCE? SHOULD WE TRUST THE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, OR THROW IT ON THE HEAP OF ANTIQUITY AND TRUST THE MIGHT OF SCIENCE? WHAT ABOUT A BIT OF BOTH. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for 2500 years, and acupuncture is used by so many different modalities of modern medicine you may have to wonder what all the fuss is about. Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, GP’s, midwives, and masseurs have all jumped on the bandwagon of acupuncture. Why? Because it’s popular? No! Because, even with minimal training they can get acupuncture needles to do a job that their traditional training does not allow for. Simple.
What about the naysayers? “There’s no scientific evidence that any of it does anything beyond placebo!” you hear the Friends of Science in Medicine cry. A past president of the Australian Medical Association Prof. Kerryn Phelps replied, “The past decade there has been a lot of research.to claim there is no ‘valid evidence’ is wrong. You won’t find it if you are not looking for it.” For the TCM practitioners, we don’t mind, people vote with their feet, and everyone has heard a great story of how amazing it can be.
Fully qualified practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture became a registered profession last year - because there is a ‘risk’ posed to the public from acupuncture and it needs to be regulated. It is only the professionals with university degrees in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine that have been adopted by national regulation, not the modern modalities who do a weekend course to start doing ‘dry-needling’.
Scott Martin has been a practicing doctor of Chinese medicine in Mackay since 2007. He completed his Masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2011 and is a nationally registered to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
In ancient China, to be a doctor of TCM was one the highest esteemed jobs you could have, and still is. So what can ‘acupuncture specialists’ do that my ‘dry-needling doctors’ can’t? Acupuncturists stand on the shoulders of our ancient masters and use tried, tested and true methods that have withstood the test of time for millennia, and have never been outdated. This ancient knowledge is used to treat everything from colds and flu, muscular aches and pain, to complex patterns of internal medicine like digestive, pulmonary and circulation diseases. In fact, when you have a look at the vast history of TCM you will find that almost all aspects of health care can be influenced by acupuncture and Chinese medicine in some way. If your acupuncturist has talent, you should be able to walk out of their clinic feeling much better after the first visit.

with allergies or sensitivities If you or your child is on a special diet, the idea of taking a trip can make anyone think twice and consider just staying home. Planning ahead makes it easier…Google restaurants and natural food stores near your destination. Locate restaurants that understand your dietary needs. Book a hotel that has a kitchenette or refrigerator. Convenience stores or airport delis are not always reliable sources. I’ve been to places that don’t have a single choice. Getting caught without any choices can put you in a stressful situation.

Skip the buffet—cross-contamination-almost guaranteed. Tell your waiter you’ll need your entire meal cooked fresh for you. Your Allergy Travel Card can help the chef. If they seem confused uncertain, ask to speak with the manager. Fried foods-do they cook flour-breaded items in the same fryer
Digestive Enzymes can help breakdown gluten, casein and soy. Helpful for sensitivities BUT are not a free ticket for those with allergies or coeliac. In stock now. With a little forethought, you can have a wonderful time, enjoy the sights, relax and rejuvenate.
Family Festivities Like most people, I look back at my childhood with fond memories of the Christmas holidays. A time spent with friends and family where food, fun and adventure were always eagerly anticipated. It is a period to recharge, reconnect and simply enjoy interacting and learning together. Christmas in Australia always lends itself to an opportunity to experience our beautiful country’s outdoors. There are wonderful learning opportunities that come from outdoor experiences. Coping with changing variables, building resilience, solving unforseen problems, demonstrating initiative, organisation and forward planning just to name a few. Most of these are higher order thinking skills and extremely difficult to replicate in a classroom or work environment. Simple ideas to keep your children’s mind stimulated and build these attributes during these holidays could be: 1. If travelling on public transport, let your children check flight details, maps, directions, distances and boarding times and be in charge of you getting to the right gate or place at the right time. 2.
Given an agreed budget, let your children plan a day while you are away or at home. This will require research, organisation and planning which will take more than just the day and then the ‘fun’ factor can be responsible to them.
Giving your children practical time to explore, imagine, create and experience while on holidays can be one of the best gifts and memories given to them over the Christmas break. Enjoy your time together and have a happy and holy Christmas.
Happy travels & Merry Christmas! Rhonda x
