After a long day of photo shoots I came home to many little piles of surprises for me, along with pee puddles all over my deck. After cleaning up, I thought to myself, “She didn’t use her grass training mats.” Assuming she must be a little stressed with her new environment, I didn’t think anymore of it. About an hour later I remembered I needed something from my office, which was at the end of my deck. I stepped out onto the deck, and after a few steps, I tripped on something and fell on what I wished was the green green grass of home, only to realise that it was Willows training mat and the soft, squishy substance that was smeared over my arm and neck, was exactly what I thought it was!!! I looked up to see Willow staring at me with a smile that told me, “The $500 mum offered you to look after me was cheap to say the least, and I am going to show you why you should have been offered double!” Over the last week, she has done exactly that. Little piles of surprises can be found all over the house, and nothing on those damn training mats, with the exception of the one I fell in! So remember next time a friend asks you for a favor, no matter how good your intentions, that no good deed ever goes unpunished.

Rebecca Atkinson - Editor

Pushing the boundaries of friendship, where no good deed goes unpunished. A friend asked me to do her a huge favor and babysit her French bulldog whilst she was away for a week. Happy to pay $500 for doing it, which is what It would have cost at the pound. I happily accepted without wanting anything in return. So a few days later Willow arrived! After being told that Willow was toilet trained, my friend gave me some grass training mats “just in case”. Thinking nothing of it, my adventure with Willow began.

Willow found the green green grass of hom e!

TALK ON THE STREET

IF YOU COULD INVITE ANY 3 PEOPLE TO DINNER, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

My parents live half the world away so I would love to see them Bonus points if he can bring some puppies!

Julie Bishop – Julie is so sophisticated and professional that she is a great inspiration to a woman in a professional career. She would also have some fantastic stories from her travels that I would love to hear.

David Grohl - from Foo Fighters because he is the coolest man alive, he is my future exhusband. I would also like to invite my parents so they could meet him, I’m an old fashioned girl and I want him to ask permission for my hand in marriage. Plus my parents live half the world away so I would love to see them and they are the most awesome people i know, they shaped me to be who i am today.

Rosie Batty – Rosie came from such a bad situation and instead of seeking sympathy, campaigned against domestic violence with the goal that no one else would have to go through what she has been through. I find her selflessness such an inspirational quality.

Obama – America’s first coloured president. I think he is a great inspiration to all and a truly great leader! Im sure our conversations at dinner would be very interesting haha Marilyn Munroe – one of the biggest sex symbols in the 1950’s. This lady was gorgeous and is such a role model to all girls that you don’t have to be skinny to look glamorous! Eminem – for someone who grew up in such a troubled family and had many misfortunes Eminem never gave up now look where he is one of the best rappers in the world! a True inspiration! He may not be everyone’s cup of tea but gosh he is one talented guy! I mean who can rap 1560 words in 6 minutes!!

Dr Chris Brown – as an animal lover I would love to hear about Dr Chris’s travels around the world and all of the animals he has come across. Also, bonus points if he can bring some puppies! EMILY LAWRENCE SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS, MACKAY

from Mackay Airport! It’s been a busy time here lately with some exciting projects showing great results. Late last year, our Relay store was revamped to create a fresh new look and feel for the store. It still offers all your reading and other travel needs and is now also home to the exciting Tech 2 Go, where you’ll find all the latest electronic toys, tablets & accessories you need to enhance your digital lifestyle. Stop by Relay and Tech 2 Go next time you’re at Mackay Airport for all the latest newspapers, general interest, business, sports and lifestyle magazines, new release novels and Lonely Planet guides, plus a wide range of drinks, confectionary, snacks, toys, pens, notepads, film, batteries, basic pharmaceutical products, headphones, cases, chargers, phone cards, mobile recharge cards, electronic toys and all the latest nifty gizmos and gadgets. We’ve also been revamping the front of the terminal roadway to provide more convenient, user-friendly and safer pedestrian access to the terminal building. The pick-up and drop-off areas are all relocated to the left hand side of the road so you can walk directly into the terminal. There’s no need to cross the road. A covered pedestrian area at the southern or check-in end of the building provides weather protection and there is a designated pick-up/drop-off bay for people with a disability. We’re pleased to be providing these improved facilities to benefit all our passengers and others using the airport. We are also still working hard to secure new services for Mackay, including international flights. Thanks to everyone who participated in our recent survey asking for input on where you want to fly. Watch this space for more news! Happy and safe travels.

Tax and Business Planning IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN I START MAKING APPOINTMENTS TO CATCH UP WITH CLIENTS I HAVEN’T SEEN FOR A WHILE TO DISCUSS WHERE THEY ARE AND WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN THEIR BUSINESS. WE JUST MEET FOR COFFEE TO HAVE AN INFORMAL AND FREE CHAT ABOUT WHAT’S AHEAD FOR THEM. The downturn in the economy in Mackay has moved the goal posts for lots of people in relation to their business building, retirement and exit strategies. So it’s a good time to sit down and discuss new strategies. For example, one of my clients was on track for retirement in four years and her husband to be out of the mining game for good. They have a lot of property in Moranbah, so the decline in the property market in that area means we now have to sit down and rework the figures to see how that has impacted on their four year retirement plan. This is also a good time to start discussions around tax planning. All tax payers are allowed to structure their affairs in a manner that remains legal but which minimises their tax liabilities. After some initial tax planning a client was looking at a tax bill of around one million dollars, some restructuring and careful planning reduced the overall bill to less than five hundred thousand, but of course that was because we started the planning early enough to restructure. Not all clients have that sort of tax liability but it is still a good idea to go through with the planning. Something simple like starting a transition to retirement pension can save tax within your superannuation fund. For others deferring your invoicing until after 30 June, if your cash flow can stand it, means the tax on that income is paid a whole year later. Writing off bad debts and obsolete stock are other methods, but there are many legitimate ways to reduce your tax liabilities. For companies that have directors loans its important to have proper loan agreements in place, to avoid onerous tax consequences. Alternatively the loan can be repaid by the earlier of the due date for lodgement of the company or the actual date of lodgement. It’s important to get some good tax advice or suffer the tax consequences. Talking to your accountant who can advise on what is most suitable for you is the place to start. If you would like a coffee and free chat call Synergy today on 4952 4763. 14 www.corelife.com.au

At Synergy, we are able to plan for any self-managed superannuation fund, from start up to providing pensions. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened Negative Gearing to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.”

FACT AND FICTION

The Australian Labour Party have announced an income tax policy to begin July 2017, that restricts the advantages of negative gearing to new residential investment property and a dramatic penalty in the form of an increased capital gain tax. The depreciation allowance being restricted to new buildings is a positive, but the proposed “discount” of 25% on capital gains is horrid. It is very difficult for the average Australian to understand such matters when already politicians and media are quoting mistruths. E.g. Bill Shorten is quoting the A.B.C when saying that when negative gearing was abolished for a short time in the mind 1980’s, there was no appreciable increase in residential rents. RUBBISH!

(HIA) released data that showed that more than one fifth of all renting households were forced to pay 35% or more of their gross weekly income on rent. The HIA also pointed out that “public housing queues are growing rapidly in every state” Paul Keating reacted by not reintroducing negative gearing but allowing a 4% depreciation allowance on new buildings. Investors however wanted negative gearing reintroduced. By October 1986, such was the concern of the lack of new investment in the housing supply, the New South Wales government suggested that the Federal government increase the depreciation allowance on new buildings to 8% to attract badly needed investment in rental properties. In August 1987 the New South Wales Real Estate Institute released new figures which showed that Sydney rental prices had increased by 66% in the previous 12 months, with a new prediction that they could increase by a further 30% in the coming year. The Master Builders Federation of Australia (MBFA) released new data showing that the construction of “other dwellings” such as units, town houses and duplexes had decreased 35% since the cancellation of negative gearing. Before the end of 1987, Paul Keating relented by reintroducing negative gearing but reduced the building depreciation allowance from 4% to 2.5% where it remains to this day. That is, taxation benefits of negative gearing are now far greater than before 1985.

Mark (Fitter)

A BRIEF HISTORY

Prior to July 1985 residential negative gearing existed as it does now except there was no 2.5% depreciation allowed on the building. July 1985 – Hawke/Keating government abolished negative gearing and introduced a capital gains tax indexed to inflation. i.e. if the value of your property increased at the same rate as inflation, you paid NO capital gains tax. You were only taxed on the capital gain in excess of inflation. THIS WAS FAIR TAX. The Hawke/Keating government had little appreciation of the amount of rental accommodation provided by investors and within 12 months realised they had made a mistake. In mid 1986 the Housing Industry Association

CAPITAL GAINS TAX!

As I mentioned previously, I considered this tax being indexed to inflation was a fair tax. However on 20/9/1999, John Howard as Prime Minister did a blatant con job on the public and a gullible media. The headlines were “Howard Halves Capital Gains Tax!” In reality, he increased it about 10 fold! Indexing the CPI was discontinued and instead 50% on the “plain gain” above the “cost base” was introduced.

BOTTOM LINE!

My clients only invest in new housing and generally enjoy an income tax deduction by means of building depreciation in the vicinity of $6K per annum that continues at a flat rate forever, as long as they own that property. In other words, there is no time limit. My clients pay little (if any) capital gains tax as we do not buy and sell, but buy and accumulate. IF YOU WISH TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CURRENT TAXATION SITUATION, BUY NEW PROPERTY IN BRISBANE NOW DISCLAIMER steve taylor & partners editorial is opinion and not advice. readers should seek their own professional advice on the subject being discussed.

DO YOU DRINK COKE OR PEPSI? IT’S HOT. YOU’RE THIRSTY. YOU WALK INTO THE SERVICE STATION AND LOOK FOR YOUR FAVOURITE FIZZY BEVERAGE… DO YOU HEAD FOR COKE? OR PEPSI? Recently, I found myself in this situation. I popped into my local, and it was only when I couldn’t find a can of diet coke I looked for a Pepsi Max… And to my surprise, it was a third of the price! Note however, that had I found my treasure, I would have paid the price for it. And whilst to some this may seem like reckless spending, it is in fact unconscious brand loyalty. What is that you ask? Brand loyalty is when customers become committed to your brand and make repeat purchases over time, as a result of consumer behavior and is affected by a person’s preferences. Loyal customers will consistently purchase products from their preferred brands, regardless of convenience or price*. (Think me and the diet coke!) Today, businesses have to work harder than ever to maintain brand loyalty, as the customer is savvier than ever before. As they are constantly interrupted and bombarded by advertising, making it more challenging for business owners to foster loyalty, when they are constantly being lured away from your brand with

distractions! Customers are becoming less trusting than ever, raising the need for brands to deliver the value promised each and every time. If they start to cut costs (and usually corners) customers quickly recognise this through a change of taste/smell/feel/experience and begin to feel neglected and less valued. So how do you combat this evil force disrupting your income? Be authentic. Offer your customers meaningful, genuine experience, because you can and you care. After all, you should care, it is your business success we are talking about! There was a time when brands had the opinion that they could simply withstand the test of time, that their value proposition or what they offered to their customers was completely unique to their business. Now, in order to succeed businesses must embrace each opportunity we have to engage with our customers and ensure that they get their problems solved efficiently and with care on every occasion. The good news is, whilst social media also brings with it sensationalism, it enables us to also engage with our customers on a very personal level, more so than ever before. In the words of the great Molly Meldrum, do yourself a favour. Value your customers and watch them value your business in return.

Starsign: Leo With six years of experience in the local industry, real estate agent Dee Mangion is well-recognised throughout the community. If you think she is looking a little different, it may in-part be due to the relaxing break she took over Christmas to the UK, or it may be that she has a new zest for her profession after joining the Gardian Real Estate team. “Gardian has a real advantage when it comes to building relationships with prospective buyers. Our Phillips Mortgage Choice financial arm will talk to many buyers before they even look at a property. Once these buyers are at a point where they are ready to buy, they come and see us at Gardian Real Estate which is a huge advantage for our sellers,” Dee said. Tell us about your Christmas holiday to the UK and Europe? I spent Christmas in London with my three sons and their families which was a very special time. My sons surprised me with a day trip to Malmesbury, a place I’ve always wanted to visit, as we used to live in Malmsbury in Victoria. My heritage is Maltese so I then had a nine day Maltese adventure, exploring tiny villages and meeting distant cousins who shared family stories. It was blissful. What are your goals for 2016? To establish myself in my new sales position with Gardian and also to enjoy what the Mackay region has to offer. I have previous experience and a passion for interior design and landscaping so finding more time to blog and share my passion online is another goal.

Favourite Movie: Shawshank Redemption Starsign: Aries Favourite Colour: The rainbow – love all colours. Favourite Food: Any food I haven’t had to cook! Fur babies: No fur babies but four gorgeous grandbabies. Working with family is pure joy for Jenny Stokes. The grandmother of four is a co-owner of popular landscaping and nursery business, Plants Whitsunday. Jenny, together with her husband Mark, decided to buy the business with their son, Matt, and daughter-in-law, Julie. “Most parents educate their children and then they are lost to the workforce, so gaining ours back gave us the pleasure of watching them flourish in the business. It gave Matt and Julie the opportunity to work with both parents on-hand to help with the grandchildren.” “The first day we started we knew it would be confusing to have four bosses, so Matt put his hand up and we’ve been working for him ever since. I couldn’t be prouder. He’s a fantastic leader; inspirational and dedicated. He will come to us for advice when needed but is just as quick to pull us back into line!” The business has grown and is now multifaceted, but my area of expertise has been in retail. We have created a wonderful space where the community can find the right plants with knowledgeable advice as well as accessories to make their garden a true tropical delight. What is your best tip for looking after plants in the Whitsundays? The three M’s are important; Moisture, Mulch and Maintenance. Don’t forget that your plants will constantly need water. Mulch is great for retaining water for longer and maintenance includes weeding, trimming and feeding. What is your favourite plant? Gosh, it’s hard to choose one! I adore a lot but if I had to pick one it would be an Aussie native. They are quick-growing once established, tough and produce wonderful flowers which attract birds and bees. What is your passion beyond plants? I enjoy family time and being out on the water. However, art is where most of my spare time goes. I took up lessons two years ago and have found a creative and exciting hobby! Head into Plants Whitsundays to see our new murals.

Favourite Movie: 50 First Dates Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Food: Thai Fur babies: 2 Fox Terriers – Dutchy and Lady Favourite Sport: Tennis Cosmetic Aesthetician; the profession is a bit of a tongue-twister, but is no problem for Tegan Birkin who was raised in a country where they speak 16 official languages. But don’t try to talk to her in Afrikaans, while she learned some of the dialect when she was younger, she isn’t fluent in it now. Tegan grew up in Zimbabwe and moved to the Sunshine Coast in Australia when she was 12. After graduating Grade 12 she moved to Mackay to complete her Bachelor of Nursing at CQUniversity. “I loved my childhood in Zimbabwe. It was lovely to be surrounded by so many family and friends. A lot of my family have moved to Australia now, but I have a sister who lives there and is expecting a baby soon. I’m excited to become a first-time aunt!” “I’m travelling back to Zimbabwe in a couple of weeks to meet my new niece or nephew. I can’t wait to absolutely spoil them,” she said. Tegan has been a cosmetic aesthetician at Mackay Skin Clinic for more than three years and enjoys the relationship she forms with clients while achieving great skin results for them. What is your number one tip for healthy skin? Sunscreen. The sun is so permanently damaging that even slight exposure adds to what could turn very nasty in the future. The Visia photographic skin analysis, that we have here at Mackay Skin Clinic, will show you just how damaging the sun is to your skin. It gives you quite a shock, but a shock that makes you more aware of what you need to do to stop your damage from worsening. What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work? Walking my two precious dogs. I love seeing them so excited for their walks. I also love tennis. I hadn’t played in a while, however, after going to the Australian Open in Melbourne, it has inspired me to get back in the game. www.corelife.com.au 19

Big award for BIG4 There were big smiles all round for BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort owners, Greg and Naomi McKinnon, when their iconic Airlie Beach holiday park was named a winner at the Australian Tourism Awards. Making it to the prestigious awards is an achievement in itself. Businesses may enter regional awards but must put forward their nomination for the state awards. Only gold winners from the state tourism awards are then entered into the national awards. BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort was the only Whitsunday tour operator to make it to the national finals, where they were awarded a bronze award in the Caravan and Holiday Park category. Mr. McKinnon said, “Winning a bronze on a national level is such a high accolade for our business and recognises the enormous effort we make every day to ensure our resort offers families the very best holiday experience.” “We take great pride in creating a fun environment and a happy holiday atmosphere and are extremely proud of the special place we have created. With ample accommodation on site, it is a perfect location for weddings, occasion events, reunions and corporate functions. A mobile bar and full commercial kitchen ensures guests are indulged and attentively served, from the minute they arrive. The venue can assume many personas, from high-end wedding glamour to professional corporate. Mount Panorama

Bathurst is famous for V8 rivalry at its core, but another class of race cars are set to make Mount Panorama rumble this Easter. The Bathurst Motor Festival will feature a selection of exciting endurance races, everything from a six hour for production cars to one hour events for the sports brands. Airlie Beach’s Wayne Udy and his Killer Racing Porsche GT3 Cup Car will be taking on the mountain in the Production Sports Car series, in what promises to be exciting racing with big grids and monster skids. Wayne has called the Whitsundays home for more than 10 years, after moving from Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. A diesel fitter by trade, he has worked in mining for 15 years, but his passion is letting rip on the race track.

His next challenge was at the Castrol Edge Townsville 400, where some hairy moments left him thankful for finishing the race unscathed. He placed fourth in his class and 29th outright. Competing at Bathurst is a dream come true for Wayne, who is choosing to challenge himself as a single driver. “The races are two, one-hour races. Most of the field will have two drivers but I’m opting to do both races myself,” he said. Training in a rural area without a racetrack makes preparation tough for Wayne, but he improvises with the facilities available. “I’m a member of the Whitsunday Sporting Car Club so I occasionally hire the track for training in our race cars. I also have a rally car which I race at the local motorkhanas and partake in kart endurance races at Xtreme Karting on the Gold Coast.” “Keeping fit plays a big role in endurance racing, so my training is a combination of work at Whitsunday Martial Arts as well as time on the road cycling,” he said. The Bathurst Festival of Motorsport will be held over the Easter Long Weekend and will be live-streamed online, Saturday 26th and Sunday the 27th of March.

“After a few years of racing a GT Falcon and RS Focus on tracks in Brisbane, I made a commitment to pursue my passion for motorsport by purchasing my own Porsche GT3 997 Cup Car,” he said. He raced to success, taking out the championships for both the Queensland Production Sports Car Championships and the Lakeside Time Attack series. He then placed a respectable third in the Ipswich 400 in the Production Sports Car series. Wayne commented that this success opened the door to some great opportunities in 2015.

Women in Business “Will it be believed, a hundred years hence, that such a state of things existed?” These words were spoken in 1891 by Louisa Lawson who is widely regarded as being one of Australia’s most effective suffragettes. Every woman in business today has much to thank Louisa and her suffragette sisters for. I implore you to read her biography for a true understanding of what it was like for women in this country, only a little over 100 years ago. Louisa was the second born of 12 children and, although she desired to be a teacher, she was made to stay at home to look after her younger siblings. After she married, she and her husband bought 40 acres. He was frequently away chasing gold so Louisa ran the farm almost single-handedly, while raising five children of her own. She purchased a small newspaper and then created Dawn, a newspaper for women to fight for their wrongs and sue for their suffrage. After the passing of her husband, Louisa enlarged her printing plant and was hiring 10 women. The New South Wales Typographical Association, which denied membership to women, tried to force Louisa to dismiss her printers. Advertisers boycotted the publication and women who worked there were harassed. She fought for the rights of women for many years, often taking a toll of exhaustion. From her physical labour on the farm she was strongly built and is remembered for having to justify her ‘non-petite’ form to the editor of the Bulletin’s ‘Red Page’; replying ‘And why shouldn’t a woman be tall and strong?’ More than 100 years later, we have improvement, however not nearly as much as there should be. Women are still objectified and judged based on their appearance. In the pages to follow, you will see the women of Airlie Fitness tackle the topic of body image head on. Tuesday, March 8, marks International Women’s Day. A day celebrated across the globe in recognition and respect for the millions of women who continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement.

While there is much to be celebrated, progress toward gender parity has slowed, which is why the 2016 theme is Pledge for Parity. “The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity.” “Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133.” (Internationalwomensday.com) Results showing a decrease in momentum would have a woman, like Louisa, turning in their grave! With purposeful action, we can help women advance equal to their numbers in respect of the economic and political contribution they are making to our world. Just take a look at the pages and pages of inspirational women in business we have featured next and ask yourself, should life be harder just because they are women? Or is it time we stopped judging ability and worth based on sex and started treating every working individual the same.

Will you pledge for gender parity in 2016? www.corelife.com.au 25

As both a real estate agent as well as a Whitsundays local, the words ‘love where you live’ ring true for Jess Mann. Not only does she understand the importance of matching the right home with the right people, she also has a new-found appreciation of the Whitsundays after a few years living away from home.

Jess Mann

“Moving back to the Whitsundays in January 2015 made me realise how much I love this town and the people here. That blue crystal water still takes my breath away every time I drive over Airlie hill. I love walking from Cannonvale into Airlie on the boardwalk. I think that is a fantastic way to appreciate the beautiful scenery and everyone you pass along the way has a friendly smile and a warm hello,” Jess said. After a diversified real estate career across different agencies, Jess is co-owner of LJ Hooker Whitsunday. “Working in multiple real estate offices gave me a diverse understanding of systems that work and highlighted the benefits of a great office culture, which has helped me in my role as Principal. We are a family business with more than 80 years of combined experience between us and understand the importance of communication. We offer an unrivalled personal service to each of our clients. We are often told how thankful they are that we don’t treat them like another number but like a valued client, because they are!” Jess has grown up with strong women in her family who have been both her support and inspiration to succeed in her career. “My mum and my three older sisters are all hardworking women who have achieved incredible things. Mum was a full-time real estate agent as well as a mother-of four. If she was ever having a tough day she would say, “One, two, three, four – here we go through the door,” which has stuck with me ever since.”

Rebecca’s other love can be found under the hood of a car. “I love the freedom they represent, the sound of a V8 engine and their overall presence. If I could have any car tomorrow, it would be a 1966 V8 Mustang convertible, turquoise with white interior. I wouldn’t pass up Bumble Bee from Transformers either.” Rebecca was given the opportunity to bring her love of cars to the Reef Festival, organising the first “Revvin the Reef”. “Anyone with a car they would like to show off can register for this year’s event, otherwise join us in the main street to check them out,” she said. Fiona Lewis and Maura Woodman It’s a great feeling to wake up and know that every day you will change someone’s life for the better, or they will make a lasting impression on yours. For Aesthetic Registered Nurses, Maura Woodman and Fiona Lewis, this is their everyday reality. “The best feeling is knowing that I can make a difference to someone’s life. Helping people is the greatest reward a job can ever give. Aesthetics is just as much about making people feel great as it is about making them look great,” Maura said. Maura and Fiona have both been registered nurses for more than 25 years. Maura became an aesthetic nurse seven years ago, while Fiona specialised in aesthetics eight years ago. Both are part of the dynamic team at Allure Laser and Skin Studio and delight in being able to tailor-make a range of individual solutions. “It’s about getting to understand the needs and dreams of our clients in both the short-term and long-term. We assess what we can offer to make them feel great now as well as what we can do to improve their aesthetics in the long run.

“We make it achievable for our clients to experience real results. We won’t promise what we can’t deliver! Our approach is holistic to ensure both great cosmetic results but also increased health and well-being,” Fiona said. The ladies come from varied backgrounds but share the same professional drive. Fiona spent three years living and working on a luxury charter yacht which travelled the length of Australia’s east coast. She also embraces any opportunity to ride horseback on the beach. “Nursing has taken me to some of the most interesting and remote locations across Australia. It’s been a wonderful and eye-opening adventure,” she said. Maura is a descendant of one of the oldest expatriate families which settled in Fiji from 1860. She also enjoys creating beautiful and unique items of pearl jewellery. “I was born in Fiji and I still embrace the island culture. I adore the country, the friendly people and the delicious food,” she said. Feel beautiful inside and out at Allure Laser and Skin Studio.

The Food Junkie BEC CLARK

Blogging is not something initially Bec was keen to do... “I didn’t know how to put my passion onto paper, I didn’t think anyone would want to read it - and to think that they are!!” This was a year ago and now her blog and facebook following is growing with every post. While Bec has been a chef for decades she takes her cooking classes seriously, preparing and trialling every class for hours to make sure every measurement and the education component is perfect.

When she puts the headset on at the start of the class, you know she’s going to be inspiring. You can feel the passion and excitement flowing from her. When asked what she loves most about her cooking classes she declares, “It’s sharing the passion. Knowing other people are learning from my knowledge is exhilarating. I love it when they contact me a week after a class with images of their risotto!” The backbone of Bec’s obsession with food can be covered in one statement she shared. “Food is so amazing... It’s cultural. It’s with friends or family. It’s religious. It’s the most important part of day to day experience.” Bec is also excited to help grow the emerging food tourism scene in Airlie Beach “Times are changing and it’s an exciting time to be a foodie in the Whitsundays!” Follow Bec and her insatiable adventures in food via www.thefoodjunkie.com.au and facebook.

Bec Clark, co-owner of award winning restaurant Fish D’vine has happily hid in the kitchen for most of the last decade. However now she’s out of the closet! Exposing the obsession for food that this self confessed food junkie has is easy. She literally eats, sleeps and breathes food. Her cook book collection is well over 1000 and her personal frypan collection isn’t far behind. Over the last year, Bec has been spending less time in the restaurant kitchen and more time planning and delivering her cooking master classes and blogging about her adventures and passion for food.

Think positive and positive things will happen.

Think Positive RACHEL AND JULIE

For qualified accountants, Julie Roberts and Rachel Cooper, happiness is when debits equal credits and the bottom line is positive. However this mother and daughter team also know that happiness comes from balance, and not just balancing the books. “I make it a rule to put away the calculator at 5 p.m. every night. It would be easy to stay on each night, but I’ve made it a rule to walk out of the door at five. I head to the gym after work to get some “me time”. It’s important to find that balance between work, looking after yourself and family,” Rachel said. Rachel knew from a young age that accountancy was a career she wanted to pursue. “Mum was working as an accountant and bookkeeping, so it was a career I was familiar with. Numbers and accountancy came easy to me, so was a no brainer really”. “I studied under a scholarship in Toowoomba to obtain my degree and spent 10 years working for a high profile firm in Toowoomba, before returning home. Mum was working as a Senior Accountant and had an employee working the bookkeeping business, so we started working together and branched out into offering the Taxation Services we are so passionate about. We haven’t looked back,” Rachel said. With a degree under her daughter’s belt it was now Julie’s turn. After gaining practical experience for 10 years working as a senior accountant, Julie studied to get her Advanced Diploma in Accounting, so the family team could offer bookkeeping and taxation services from two qualified accountants with varied expertise. “We’re a small family business, but that’s how we like it. We get to know our clients well and form friendships with many of them. We pride ourselves in offering as little or as much help as our clients need. From full-fledged accounting and taxation, to bookkeeping and administration. We have a lot of clients who aren’t computer-savvy, so we have assisted with creating resumes, helping them with job applications and, for some clients, we offer full administration services including invoicing and paying bills. We will even teach them how to use MYOB themselves, if that is the solution to their bookkeeping and taxation woes” Julie said. With two daughters aged 7 and 9, Rachel already has her hands full when she leaves the office. However the dedicated accountant is continuing to upskill, studying financial planning as well as her CPA (Certified Practicing Accountant). “Mum is always available to help with the children when things get too hectic, so I guess we are a dream team in and out of the office.” Rachel’s fiancé plays with the Whitsunday Raiders rugby union team, so Rachel offers her accounting services pro bono to the organisation as their treasurer and also volunteers for canteen duties. If numbers give you a headache, bring balance into your life with Bookkeeping & Taxation Solutions in Airlie Beach, for professional accounting services with a personal and professional touch.

Armed with snips and spray, Mackay’s Teal Keating has proven to be a cut above by taking out Central Queensland’s WorldSkills hairdressing competition, held at CQUniversity. Teal will now represent Central Queensland at the national WorldSkills event later this year. “Mum has been my inspiration to become the best hairdresser I can. She represented Australia in international hair competitions placing first and second in different categories.” “I’ve seen how competing enables you to develop and to constantly improve your skills and technique. That’s what I want to achieve as a hairstylist, to strive to give my clients nothing but the best,” Teal said. Last November, Teal opened her new salon on Victoria Street, Everwonder Hair Creatives. Business has grown through wordof-mouth and Teal believes it’s the little extras in her service which has made the difference. “At Everwonder Hair Creatives we place an emphasis on quality over quantity. We don’t overlap bookings, this means that the hairstylist who begins your service is the one who will finish and do everything in-between. It makes the experience more personal and it ensures that our full attention is only on one person at a time. It also builds great relationships. It’s more like friends catching up rather than impersonal chit-chat,” Teal said. As Teal’s team grows, her emphasis as a business owner will be on regular training and upskilling. “We hope to be attending Hair Expo Australia each year to keep up with the latest trends, techniques and products as well as other industry training opportunities.” “I want my team to be as passionate about improving as I am. To constantly push themselves and to surprise themselves with what they can create,” she said Leading up to competing at the WorldSkills competition in Melbourne, Teal spends her spare time training and collaborating with local businesses in the beauty industry.

McKays’ Justice League Left to right: Dannielle Sanderson, Nicole Cullen, Kelly Parker, Angela Hurley (nee Porter) (kneeling), Suzanne Brown and Samantha Sticklan Meet our ‘Wonderwomen’ and ‘Superwomen’! The female lawyers breaking down barriers and forging their way into senior positions, usually dominated by their male counterparts. For many years, female law graduates have outnumbered male graduates. However, this is not reflected in the boardrooms of most Australian law firms, with such top jobs still heavily male dominated. Family commitments and gender inequality that still exist in the profession, make it challenging for women to advance to such heights in the legal industry, however, at McKays we are bucking that trend. As part of our commitment to a strong, dynamic and progressive workplace, McKays has encouraged and supported its female lawyers to progress into and excel in leadership roles. To celebrate International Women’s Day and Core’s ‘Women in Business’ issue, McKays is casting the spotlight upon the achievements and contributions of their senior female lawyers. One of McKays’ well known success stories is Suzanne Brown, who started her www.corelife.com.au career at32McKays as a junior secretary. Suzanne advanced to a Principal of the practice before the age of 30, given her hard work and commitment to her

clients. She was named as one of the Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30 Best Lawyers in Australia and in the Courier Mail’s 20 under 40 Business Stars of Queensland last year. Suzanne is also Mackay’s only Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in Business Law, with only four females to hold this qualification. Similarly, Cathy Cover and Samantha Sticklan, Senior Consultants at McKays hold the same specialist qualification in Family Law. Angela Hurley (nee Porter) has also recently joined the McKays’ team and is sure to impress with her experience as a Commercial Lawyer. Nicole Cullen is another female lawyer who has forged ahead in her time at McKays, being named the first female Principal of the practice in 2010. Nicole, a Family and Criminal Lawyer and qualified mediator, has worked at McKays for ten years and had two children during this time. Taking parental leave was no barrier to reaching the top for Nicole, who praises McKays’ flexibility policy with allowing a smooth transition into life as a working mum. Dannielle Sanderson, a Senior Associate at McKays, assists clients in the area of Building and Construction, which in itself is often a male dominated industry.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

Kelly Parker, another female Principal and Commercial Lawyer at McKays, praises the mentoring program and support of her employer in assisting her own career advancement at McKays whilst also being a working mum.

Multitasking, conflict resolution and tough decision making skills are just some of the exceptional qualities of these women that are acknowledged by McKays’ Managing Director, Mark McGrath.

She says ”The program allows women to not only find their place within the practice, but equally so their role in the wider industry and community.” These women are, without a doubt, superwomen. Juggling children (note the senior female lawyers pictured have ten children between them!), family lives and busy professional careers, as well as volunteering their “spare time” to support the local community, including volunteer legal services, sporting and charity groups and on school boards.

Working locally in the profession for many years, Mark has been a prominent driver to gender equality in the workplace, and intends to continue to offer support and encouragement to both male and female employees of McKays.

McKays’ comprehensive mentoring program ensures that the ‘super powers’ of their senior lawyers are passed on to their up and coming graduates by the pairing of junior and senior colleagues, allowing the senior lawyer to help guide their young careers and assist with work-life balance. McKays strongly supports the role of women in the boardroom and in senior positions generally.

So on this International Women’s Day, McKays puts the challenge forward to all employers to consider the opportunities in your workplaces for women to advance their careers and how you may support them in breaking down the stereotypical barriers to forge ahead and assist your business to thrive!

As current Mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council, Jenny Whitney has successfully balanced her family commitments and devotion to her young grandchildren with her extensive responsibilities as regional leader, in a very effective and professional manner over the past four years.

Being a successful businesswoman in her own right, Jenny has applied her strong ethics and financial management abilities, along with her solid business principles to her current position; with the results of her tenure to date evident with the recognition of the Whitsunday Regional Council by Queensland Treasury Corporation as being now in the position of a significantly improved financial status, rather than the financial position that Jenny inherited in 2012. Having grown up in Mackay, Jenny loves the Whitsundays and believes in the region’s potential to succeed, with endless opportunities on our doorstep for everyone to benefit from. She enjoys the lifestyle enormously with its fantastic natural attributes, unique cultural blend and community spirit and feels very blessed to be able to share life’s experiences with her close knit family in such a beautiful place. “I love this place! Making History

JENNY WHITNEY magic to live here and be able to take my grandkids for a lovely day out to either the foreshore at Airlie, the Water Park at Bowen, the Peter Faust Dam at Proserpine or around the Collinsville region.” Jenny made Local Government history in 2012 when elected to the position of Mayor for the Whitsundays, being the first female to ever hold this honour. She has handled the role very efficiently, with a level head and down-to-earth approach. Jenny thrives on the responsibility and daily challenges of this position. Her more than 27 years of local government experience is evidenced in the manner in which she applies herself with complete dedication, expertise and professionalism to all aspects of community representation. Jenny takes her role very seriously and respects the position that the community entrusted her with in 2012. “I just love my job! I am very passionate about progressing the Whitsundays and gain great satisfaction with the knowledge that what we achieve today will assist in future growth and employment opportunities for our beautiful region tomorrow.”

What do you get when you combine a welder with a carpenter? A dream home built with a little bit of elbow grease and a lot of love! Megan Lyons is the workshop manager for Brackets Whitsunday, a local welding and fabrication specialist. Her position entails the wearing of many hats, from boilermaker, welder and fabricator to quotes and customer service. Megan’s partner, Jake, is a carpenter and together they are building their own home from the ground up. “We bought a hilly bush block a couple of years ago as well as an excavator and chipped away at the land until it was ready for us to pour the concrete slab. Between us we have the timber and the steel covered, so the design is quite industrial with polished concrete floors and Corten steel cladding. The timber is reclaimed hardwood from a friend’s old shed in Sugarloaf we pulled down. “We got in before Christmas with walls, a roof and a bathroom, but we’re still cooking in the shed until the kitchen is finished. We’ve loved building it ourselves and the result is really unique,” Megan said.

BRACKETS WHITSUNDAY

Megan is a Kiwi and her favourite place to visit is the Marlborough Sounds, not far from the small town of Renwick where she grew up with her twin sister, Helen. “I love being a twin. You have a best friend for life! My sister and I couldn’t get away with pranks as we were quite different in looks. I’m sure we would have if we could though.” Megan was only 13 when she lost her mum to cancer. “Life after that was very different and I was very different. I had to grow up pretty fast. She taught me a lot about living life, loving my friends and family and we both have a soft spot for animals. She owned her own business and when I think about what she achieved and what an amazing person she was, I just want to do my best and make her proud,” she said. Megan’s soft spot for animals is recognisable in her love for her 13-year-old Boxer, Bungle. Bungle came over from New Zealand with Megan six years ago and is well-known throughout the Cannonvale Industrial Estate, even featuring in Core Magazine a couple of years ago. “He comes to work with me every day, although in the summer he spends a lot of time at Whitsunday Marble and Granite’s office lapping up their air conditioning. He’s a sweet playful pup who has won a few hearts around the estate. He really is my best mate and we are rarely seen apart,” she said. Whitsunday Brackets cover all steel, aluminium and stainless steel welding; fabrication and repairs in shop or on-site. From boat repairs, making canopies and modifications, trailer builds and repairs, to steel frame housing or a simple bracket. No job is too big or small. Amanda Webber

THE PERFECT BALANCE

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s AMORE! Amore, of course, being Italian for love, which aptly describes how the Mackay community is embracing the rapidly-expanding local pizza business, Ma’s Pizza. We love it!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

Amanda Webber and her husband Mark are the owners of Ma’s Pizza. The couple had owned a pizza store at Rural View for five years which was struggling. “Business was quiet and we knew we were struggling. We knew we had to re-invent ourselves to break through a challenging economic climate. We looked at the product and realised we made better pizzas at home, using premium local ingredients and plenty of topping. We brainstormed one night and our babysitter came up with the Ma’s brand, a combination of M for Mark and A for Amanda. We loved it. We knew instantly we were on the right track and haven’t looked back,” Amanda said. The couple’s flagship store is located in the Northern Beaches shopping complex and two more stores have recently opened at Parkside Plaza in West Mackay and at Greenfields. Despite the rapid expansion of her business, Amanda is showing no signs of giving up her day job, as Branch Manager for ANZ in North Mackay. She worked for ANZ in Sydney for a number of years before moving back to Mackay and enjoys the challenges that being a bank manager presents. “I have a wonderful team that surrounds me at the Mt Pleasant branch. My career with ANZ is one I have put my heart and soul into and I just love it. We help people to achieve their dreams, like buying a business, a dream car or their first home. It’s a very rewarding career,” Amanda said. Also a mother-of-three, Amanda’s secret to her success is her husband, Mark. “He encourages me to follow my dreams. I love working at the bank and always have. This allows me time to focus on my career. It’s me-time, my time to shine. “Mark looks after the school run and then puts a lot of work into the pizza business. His support is the key to our success. I couldn’t do it without him,” she said. As a busy mum, Amanda understands the need for women to have their own outlet of expression, something they can do on their own. She created the Handmade Boutique Market as a way of helping work-at-home mums have a professional and safe way to sell their handmade creations. “The Handmade Boutique Market is held quarterly at the Mackay Basketball stadium. I’m constantly impressed by the incredible talent in our community which emerges at the market. It’s my way of giving back to help others get their own businesses off the ground,” she said. Ma knows best. Experience fresh, local ingredients and generous toppings from Ma’s Pizza Kitchen; Northern Beaches, Parkside Plaza and Greenfields. Bellissimo!

FINDING MY MOJO

Nobody ever wishes to struggle, but often it can be the darkest times which reveal the strongest light. Without struggle, no one would realise how truly strong they are. Many can relate to the destruction left by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) during the end of the last decade. Some businesses were more scathed than others and for some, it was the beginning of the end. Kelli Medford felt the effect of the GFC stronger than most. She lost her business, her home, her car and for a short period of time she lost her most prized asset, her mojo. She went from practically printing money to borrowing from a close friend to cover the basics in what felt like the blink of an eye. At her lowest, she was faced with two options. “I could pull my socks up, start again and demonstrate to my children that sometimes failure is part of the learning process of doing business or I could sit in the corner and cry, blaming the world for my downfall.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

“I gave myself one day to sit in the corner and have a really good cry but after, a few hours and a few bottles of wine, I realised it was pretty lonely in the corner and self-pity was a waste of time,” Kelli said. With 22 years in the hospitality industry, both working for other people and owning her own business, Kelli had a wealth of experience behind her. A few career choices presented themselves. However it was when the position for the General Manager of the Boathouse Apartments arose that Kelli knew it was the direction her life had wanted to take her. “As soon as I stepped into the office I felt back in my comfort zone. My mojo was back. I have a great team. We have a great property and having Mantra onboard is fantastic for our town,” she said. No matter how difficult things are, Kelli’s key message is to never give up. “Get back up on that horse.” “I am back doing what I love; mentoring other business owners, young entrepreneurs and tourism start-ups. Educating them on the challenges to watch for and how to set up their business efficiently from the beginning. Helping other people to achieve great results in business is like winning the lottery. It really excites me,” Kelli said. Courage doesn’t always run. Sometimes it is the tiny footstep making progress, striving to go further tomorrow. As long as you keep taking steps in the right direction, you’re not giving up. www.corelife.com.au 37 www.corelife.com.au 37

WHITSUNDAY FUNERALS & CREMATORIUM

During our darkest of days, one of the first people we turn to for help and advice is a funeral director. Although they experience the grief and sadness associated with death on a daily basis, as Casey Boyle explains, they never become complacent. “I think some people believe that funeral directors are bulletproof when it comes to the feelings associated with death, but we aren’t. “We feel the same emotions when we lose someone close to us. The job can be emotionally tough, but this is because we care. I put myself in the shoes of the grieving families to tune into their emotions and experience what they are experiencing.” “Knowing that we can help someone in their time of need is what keeps us going and what keeps us grounded,” Casey said. Casey is a funeral director at Whitsunday Funerals & Crematorium. Her parents-in-law, Jeff and Judy Boyle, entered the funeral industry in 1988 when they created Funeral Transfer Services Australia. They moved to the Whitsundays in 2008 for a warm sea-change and purchased Funeral Services Whitsunday, changing the name to Whitsunday Funerals. In 2010 they purchased Coral Coast Funerals in Bowen and with the purchase of a new cremator, rebranded both businesses to Whitsunday Funerals and Crematorium. Their third branch in Mackay is due to be opened soon. Casey believes it is the family-owned touch that makes a big difference in the funeral industry. “Being family-owned provides continuity of care and a personalised service. We also support other local businesses and take pride in the communities we are a part of,” she said. Casey is also a mother and credits organisation as the key to a business and family lifestyle. Life can get incredibly hectic so I have to be super organised. I wake at 4 a.m. to get ready for the gym, so I have time to spend with my daughter in the afternoon. I have a supportive family too who help with pick-ups from day care if I need to work late,” she said. A woman of many talents, Casey enjoys getting involved with every facet of being a funeral director. “It’s not all office work, I do a lot of the behind-thescenes tasks too. This includes bringing the deceased into our care, preparing the body in the mortuary, cremating, making video presentations and being the funeral celebrant at the service.” Whitsunday Funerals and Crematorium are there to assist with the passing of a loved one. With branches in Bowen, Proserpine and Mackay, they are there www.corelife.com.au when 34 you need them.

She progressed from salesperson to floor manager before later moving to Harvey Norman in Mount Gravatt, where she joined the Franchisee in Training program. Her first store as a franchisee was in Gympie. When the opportunity to transfer to Cannonvale arose, Judy and her partner jumped at the opportunity for a sea change. “We love to go fishing on our days off, so it’s just perfect here in the Whitsundays for that. When we’re not on the water we’re out in the garden, enjoying the laidback lifestyle of this beautiful area. We absolutely love it here, so we hope to spend many more years calling the Whitsundays home,” she said. One of the hardest parts to taking the plunge in business can be moving from family and friends, but Judy said that when you find something you love, taking the step to make it happen is worth it. “My children and grandchildren are in Western Australia, so it is a long way to fly for visits. I got your back KAREN PRINCE-POPOVICH

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

On the beautiful South Pacific island of New Caledonia, Karen Prince-Popovich was inspired at an early age by her mother, a beauty therapist and efficacious business woman. Karen became her mother’s apprentice from age 13 and learnt how to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere whilst delivering excellence in service. She became a qualified beauty therapist and cosmetologist, but discovered her passion for the field of osteopathy. She travelled to the UK to attend one of the world’s most reputable schools, the European School of Osteopathy (ESO), a decision which would later open many doors of opportunity. Her desire to be in business for herself led to Karen establishing several osteopathic clinics in the UK as well as in her country of birth, France, where she lived for a few years. Being passionate about helping others, Karen became a clinic tutor at the ESO for two years. The results spoke for themselves and soon Karen was treating people from all walks of life, from those who had struggled with injuries for many years, to peak performance athletes including professional rugby union players as well as elite cyclists riding in the Tour de France. “A most memorable appointment was when a famous American actor visited my clinic, still sewn into his costume,” Karen said. A sponsorship visa brought Karen to Australia, then she and her family moved from Hobart to the Whitsundays eight years ago.Osteopathy wasn’t particularly well-known at that stage, but that didn’t daunt Karen from opening her clinic, which to this day is still the only full-time osteopathic clinic between Townsville and Rockhampton. “Osteopathy is about clarifying what the body is doing and why, therefore it is imperative to educate patients about their own state of health. The www.corelife.com.au 40what results are help patients to truly understand what osteopathy can do which

then leads to word-of-mouth referrals.Patients in the Whitsundays embraced and supported our clinic which led to people travelling from as far inland as Moranbah and Collinsville as well as along the coast from Mackay and Ayr for treatment,” Karen said. With experience in treating patients in many countries across the world, Karen has experience in a range of osteopathic techniques. Gentle techniques include cranial osteopathy, visceral osteopathy and paediatric osteopathy while the firmer techniques such as structural osteopathy can be used to realign spinal segments or other joints. Her clinic, Peak Body Mechanics, also offer laser treatments, using auriculotherapy points, which are effective for smoking and alcohol cessation as well as weight control. In the last couple of years, Karen was asked to mentor osteopathic students in their final year at University. This role inspired her to recruit younger osteopaths and grow her clinic by opening a full time clinic in Proserpine as well as keeping the existing Woodwark clinic. Her bustling team now includes two new osteopaths, Jo and Leah, practice manager Debbie, receptionist Gabby and clinic co-director and husband, Dan, who is also a SCENAR and Musculoskeletal therapist. Karen always stays abreast of new developments regarding treatments of acute and chronic pain, and recently started offering THOR, low-level laser therapy, as well as a form of Neurofeedback brain training called NeurOptimal, which has a wide range of use to increase neuroplasticity and improve cerebral function. Whether it’s for injury rehabilitation, general well-being or for elite athletes to perform at peak physical condition, Peak Body Mechanics has your back… and the rest of your body!

A smile; it’s the prettiest thing you can wear and it will never go out of fashion! Yet most of us are guilty from time-to-time of neglecting our teeth. We tend to take them for granted and it’s not until we lose one, or one is severely in pain, that we are reminded just how valuable they are. That’s why it is important to invest in a regular check-up with your dentist. It’s much less expensive than major dental work caused by neglect. Kylie del Solar always wanted to become a dentist, but her professional career path took her on the scenic route to get there. She started as a dental assistant for six years and then went to university to gain her Bachelor of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Bowen Hospital, but in her third year post graduation the opportunity arose for her to study dentistry. She headed back to university to graduate with a Bachelor Degree in dental surgery. It may have taken Kylie 20 years to achieve her professional dream, but what is remarkable is that she achieved her two degrees while also raising a family of six children; Esperanza, 12, Estrella, 11, Tomas Jarvier, 9, Marcos Luis, 7, Ines Sofia, 5 and Domingo Caesar, 4.

KYLIE’S FAMILY DENTAL

“I have the most supportive husband and family. Without them all this would not have been possible. Our time together is very valuable and I always make sure that there is a healthy balance between work and family life,” Kylie said. Kylie’s Family Dental was opened in October 2015 to provide affordable dental care in the rural community of Bowen.” “Accessing private dental care in Bowen has been challenging, with many people in the community travelling out of town to receive dental care. We provide locals with a reliable and affordable service. We pride ourselves on having a supportive team who are focused on catering for the very nervous, anxious patient who would not normally visit a dentist. Our number one priority is making the experience as pleasant and pain-free as possible.” Smiles are free but they are worth a lot. Take care of one of your greatest assets, your smile, with Kylie’s Family Dental.

You have 8 Seconds Passion, expertise and love for what we do are great drivers for setting up a business. But this same passion can cloud our view of our own business. We can’t see the wood for trees and miss opportunities. This practical, commonsense attitude, and an innate desire to help other businesses succeed, backed up with impressive qualifications and industry experience, was all the motivation that Tolita Dukes needed to go it alone in setting up her own business, 8 Seconds Marketing. “As a business owner, we are often so close to our operations that we can’t always identify simple opportunities which may provide quick wins,” Tolita said in explaining the value of an outside business partnership, especially for marketing. “The average human attention span is only 8 seconds, so we need to make the most of it!” she says. “A marketing agency can provide a fresh perspective on your business, an objective point of view as well as bring insights from their work with other clients, other industries and other experiences.” “When business people are specialists in their own fields, they often see marketing as a chore. Just because they are great at their own work and running their own business, doesn’t mean they are expert marketers. For me it’s the exciting part of any business, and I am continually excited by my clients’ business ventures, bringing fresh opportunity and a new lease of life to their operations,” Tolita said. Tolita is well-credentialed to offer her ideas and strategies to a range of businesses. 42 www.corelife.com.au

TOLITA DUKES

After completing her Masters of Business Administration at Deakin University, she worked in business development for the mining industry. With extensive experience within the tourism industry across the Whitsundays already in her portfolio, she combined her strengths to provide clients with clear direction and technological expertise. “My experience across tourism and marketing was a point of difference I could offer local businesses, with the ability to provide insight into many sectors and expertise across emerging marketing technologies.” Digital platforms enable businesses to track marketing performance more efficiently and Tolita shares her expertise in this area to assist business realise the dynamics that a blended campaign can bring to their outcomes. “We can analyse data through a digital campaign to establish what worked best and use this to create even more successful advertisements and strategies. While multiple media platforms can seem overwhelming, they can actually work in synergy to deliver better results,” she said. Tolita is a firm believer in continual self-improvement and making sure that kindness, sincerity and joy are everpresent elements in her daily life. “Never stop learning and challenging yourself with new ideas especially.” “And make sure you have fun, a great sense of humour, and keep everything in perspective. Be imperfectly human in your own way - we all are!” For an outside perspective, contact 8 Seconds to help shed light on your marketing.

Becoming somewhat of a quirky tourist attraction in recent years, the shipwrecked schooner beached on Cannonvale Beach’s shore is a talking point for locals and visitors alike, but for Anne-Marie Oxley, the ship holds memories nearer her heart. The ship, Whitsunday Magic, was her wedding venue nine years ago, but of course it was still afloat back then. Anne-Marie grew up in Quebec in Canada; speaking French, eating poutine and spending weekends on the alpine slopes, skiing and snowboarding. She was granted a scholarship to attend the reputed McGill University in Montreal where she graduated with honors, gaining a bachelor’s degree in International Business and Marketing. Not only academically gifted, AnneMarie was also a skilled basketball player, captaining the Canadian junior team. After years of work, AnneMarie took a gap-year to Australia, which she said never ended. “The year stretched to a decade and still continues to this day. I met the love of my life here in Airlie Beach and never left. I have been blessed with exciting career opportunities, great friends and the greatest gift of all, a darling baby daughter, so there has been no good reason to leave!” Anne-Marie is the project manager for the Mirage Whitsundays development, one of the Whitsundays most exclusive addresses, offering prestigious apartments with absolute waterfront positioning and luxurious fittings. She is also the director of the management company affiliated with the project. “Since their acquisition of the property I have worked with the owners in designing a sales and marketing strategy most suited to the caliber of the property. The end result being the sale of over 100 luxurious apartments and the development of the Mirage brand through holiday rental operations,” she said.

MIRAGE WHITSUNDAYS

Not only is Mirage Whitsundays a luxurious residential investment opportunity, the resort itself provides spacious high-end apartment living for visitors to the Whitsundays. After a successful opening the resort is now working toward the addition of a restaurant and spa facilities. Anne-Marie recently acquired a full real estate license to manage the real estate sales division of the development, an achievement made more remarkable by the fact that she is also a new mother. “My hours outside of work are entirely occupied by my amazingly energetic daughter. I am dying to go on a ski trip somewhere, maybe Japan, but as a new mum even two minutes of peace and quiet on the toilet is a new desired getaway,” she said. A challenging aspect of being a woman in business is juggling ambition with being a great mother and wife. “You need to be a bit creative, very organised and I recommend an unlimited supply of coffee,” she said. Her other tip; embrace online grocery shopping.

Marketing Mirage Whitsundays to a Chinese market has provided Anne-Marie with a number of bizarre and funny situations. “I was asked to feature in a Chinese travel show to promote the Mirage development. I therefore had to wear a large bright orange swimming suit and jump off a seaplane yelling Chinese words that to this day, I still don’t know the meaning of. I then had an interview with the show host who asked me questions about the region, especially Whitehaven Beach, to which I responded professionally about the local tourism market. Later I learned that they had translated my description of Whitehaven Beach by saying how soft my legs were because I exfoliated with the silica sand every day!”

Davina Briskey Trading Hours. When you own your own business this can become a flexible term, but when you adore your clients and love what you do, as Davina Briskey explains, breaking the rules is to be expected. “Opening outside of normal business hours is a small price to pay when I can make the world of difference to someone. Gosh, I’ve even opened on Australia Day to style a wedding party!” “Yes, I do have children and a husband who works away. However I will always do what I can to accommodate the community,” she said. Davina is the owner of The Sacred Art of Hair in Proserpine and has 18 years of experience as a senior hairdresser. After a lustrous career styling locks in Queensland and the Northern Territory, Davina and her husband Craig moved to the Whitsundays with their two sons, Jack and Troy. “I started in 2010 as salon manager and senior stylist. The interview was fortuitous in that a lady came in by chance needing a haircut during the interview. I cut her hair on the spot, was paid and hired then and there!” Three months later, Davina became the proud owner and began to put her personal touches into the business. “Being in business is simple when you follow one rule; treat others how you wish to be treated yourself.” “I had only been in the Whitsundays for three months before becoming a business owner, so I knew I had to hard to achieve results. I let my work speak for itself and the result www.corelife.com.au 44work was increased business based on word-of-mouth.” “Every head of hair that walks

out of the door is an advertisement for my business, so I take great care in my work,” Davina said. The Sacred Art of Hair stocks a premium colour brand called Goldwell, popular with clients and stylists alike. It is also gaining a reputation for fun and funky extensions, with bold Showpony human tape extensions and feather extensions. Davina has expanded the business further and leases space within the salon to an experienced beauty therapist, with an exclusive product range called Eco Beautiful. Clients can combine hair and beauty bookings for a session of pure pampering with an extensive range of services. With two boys, Jack, age 12, and Troy, age 10, timeout for Davina to re-charge is critical. “Metime is at the gym. When I’m looking my best and feeling good about myself then I can focus better and I have more energy. “The key to work-life balance for me is organisation. My boys are great kids and I think some of my organisational skills have rubbed off on them. I married my primary school sweetheart, Craig, more than 14 years ago. We function well as a family and that enables me to put a lot of effort into the business,” she said. When a skill becomes a passion, it transforms into art. Experience The Sacred Art of Hair to feel like a masterpiece instead of just ‘Meh.’

Strength in women AIRLIE FITNESS

“I wish my boobs were a little bigger and my butt was a lot smaller. I look silly in this dress.”

“Exercise to become healthier. Once you feel great about working out, the aesthetic benefits such as losing weight and toning will naturally follow.”

“I wish my thighs weren’t so huge. I’m embarrassed to wear a bathing suit at the beach.”

Airlie Fitness owner, Wendy Whibley, had to overcome a physical disability in order to achieve her dreams.

“I wish I looked like her.”

“I was born with a club foot, which means my left foot was turned in and up touching the inside of my leg. Through multiple surgeries it is as normal as it will ever be. However it is still a size and a half different, my calf muscle will never fully develop and one hip is 2cm higher than the other.”

Almost all of us identify ‘imperfections’ about ourselves that we wish we could change but, at the end of the day, we’re all imperfect. We’re all unique. We’re imperfectly perfect the way we are. So there’s no better time than now to fall in love with yourself. Not when you’re 5kg lighter. Not after you’ve started a new diet. It’s time to love the skin you’re in right now. Airlie Fitness has a great team of women who inspire many people every day on the path to a healthier lifestyle. However these women have also struggled with body-image at some point in their life. They can relate to feelings of self-sabotage, insecurity and self-doubt, which is why they are passionate about changing the perception of the fitness industry.

“Last year I put myself through the ultimate challenge and started competing in Fitness Competitions. I was judged on muscle size and symmetry. I did it as a personal challenge and placed second on the Gold Coast in the novice tall class.” “I encourage other people to aim high. Don’t ever think you can’t achieve something, because there’s every possibility you can,” she said. Airlie Fitness have opened a training studio in Proserpine and Wendy is excited to see so many ladies from a small town enjoying their training. “We are all so busy these days, we do need to take time for ourselves.”

“Work out because you want to feel good, not because you want to look better.”

“Finding the time to exercise a few times a week will help you to feel incredible. It’s the most important thing you can do for yourself, to look after yourself,” Wendy said.

“Focus on how exercise makes you feel. Accomplished. Stronger. Fitter. More confident. Those are all amazing things to achieve. Exercise to overcome stress.”

Start seeing yourself the way others around you see you and you’ll realise how beautiful you already are.

Julie Istogu SORRENTO RESTAURANT & BAR What is the secret to happiness? Do what you love and you will love what you do. It’s a recipe for success which Julie Istogu learned from her greatest inspiration, her mum. “Mum has always put her children first and has been the biggest influence in my life. She taught me how to be a great mother just from being a great one herself. Dream big and follow my heart, keep my head high and never give up are the lessons she gave me. She’s my best friend, I just wish I could cook as amazingly as her! She can create an incredible meal out of anything, just by following her senses. It’s a skill I’m yet to master,” Julie said.

Sorrento Restaurant and Bar has undergone a series of renovations. Large glass windows now separate the restaurant from the bar to allow for a more intimate setting for parties and occasions. The expansive downstairs deck has new furniture and fittings, now the establishment can accommodate 192 guests. New framed images from Italy add to the feeling that you are indeed perched somewhere on the Amalfi Coast. Adding to the authentic feel, the popular pizza and pasta range are all housemade from scratch. When it comes to running both a successful business as well as a household, Julie would like to take full credit, but admits that her husband, Petrit, is the glue which often holds everything together. “We all dream of having it all; a business, relationship and family, but what they don’t tell you is that having it all doesn’t equate to everything being a breeze. To be honest, at times it seems impossible to juggle children and a business, but what gets me through is prioritising what is important and distinguishing work from home.” “My husband is the rock in our family. He makes everything possible with his passion, dedication and hard work. My favourite time of the day is when I have my family around me and I can unwind with a good wine,” Julie said. The one downfall to owning a restaurant is that you’re likely to be spotted if you choose to race to the shop in your PJ’s, as Julie once discovered. “I did try, but I managed to be seen by almost everyone I know, including my bank manager, so I won’t be doing that again” she laughs. Discover the feisty flavour of Italian at Sorrento Restaurant and Bar, Abell Point Marina.

WHITSUNDAY DANCE CONNECTION

The Art of Dance is a beautiful thing. Mesmerising movement, both strong and subtle, to tell a story in a way which words simply can’t. Known by her students as Miss Jenny, Jenny Featherstone has taught dance for more than 20 years. She began dancing at age 5, a love which would result in a lustrous career.

“To teach dance to children for 20 years is a dream come true. We aim to motivate young minds and develop happy, healthy dancers who just love to dance! I consider myself double fortunate to be able to dance in the beautiful Whitsundays. I adore our small community,” she said. Jenny performed in the ballet, Giselle, with the Queensland Ballet. However, her favourite life experience was becoming a mother. “My husband, Adam, and I love our son, William, dearly. We couldn’t be more proud of him,” she said. Jenny credits Whitsunday Dance Connection’s success with the passion she and her team have to inspire. “Teaching and choreographing for me for more than 10 years is Paula Bradley. She is a very passionate teacher and also a mother with two young children under the age of 5. Sam Camm is coming up five years with us, helping with administration and in the little dance wear shop. She is also a child care educator so is often familiar with the young faces who start their dance education with us,” she said. Why dance like no one is watching, when you can dance with the confidence that everyone is watching.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

She was awarded the prestigious title of Dancer of the Year at Queensland’s Dance School of Excellence before advancing to the Victorian College of Arts to complete her Bachelor of Dance Degree. She moved to Proserpine in 1996 and, one year later, built the region’s first purpose built studio for dance, Whitsunday Dance Connection. Jenny is a registered teacher in the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus and a registered teacher of Glenn Wood Tap.

make me OVER! has been created by

MODEL Ella

Having known Ella for many years now, and since starting my apprenticeship 3.5 years ago, I’ve always loved the idea of taking her hair lighter. Being such a large colour correction, I chose to go lighter over a longer period of time to keep as much health and integrity in Ella’s hair. This is the most ideal way to take any client lighter.

MAKE UP 1. Prepped and primed her face with hour glass primer 2. I used a dewy foundation by Mac and high coverage concealer by Nars then set it with studio fix powder by Mac. 5. For her eyes I created a subtle look using soft browns with Naked Smokey pallet and Mac eye shadows. I used Naked liner in a water line soft winged line and finished it off with Model Rock Wispy Flower lashes!

3. I then contoured with Anastasia pallet, highlighted her cheek bones and used a blush by Nars, called ‘Luster’ giving her a beautiful glow.

6. Lips: I used Mac lip liner and Matt Viva Glam lip stick by Mac! To hold this look in place for longer wear, I used a great setting spray called ‘Skinadiva”. Amazing for this humid weather in the Whitsundays.

4. Brows where made bold with Anastasia brow pallet and highlighted brow bones to make them stand out! ELISE SCOTT - 0416 849 036 elisezs@hotmail.com | www.makeupbeautybar.com 50 www.corelife.com.au

AFTER

We know your time is PRECIOUS! Mix business with pleasure at ADAM & EVE HAIR BY : Jess Bridge COLOUR: Over 3 visits in the salon pre-lightening with “WELLA” products and techniques, we were both exuberant about the beautiful blonde I had achieved. I then used “WELLA COLOUR TOUCH” to colour the base nice & dark which made Ella’s beautiful big, brown eyes pop and toning the blonde mids and ends to a deep, stunning, steel grey that complimented her skin perfectly. CUTTING: Ella was at the point where she hadn’t had a cut that she LOVED for a while had just been growing it out. I loved her long locks and thanks to going blonde over a longer period of time, it wasn’t a necessity to cut off much length. I met Ella’s longest layer that she was growing out and cut the hair solidform to give the much desired blunt look which really made the style perfect. STYLING: To compliment such a beautiful, fresh new colour I used “SEBASTIAN” products to give the perfect style. Spritzing “VOLUPT SPRAY” throughout the hair gave it beautiful, natural body. Using a GHD hair straightener and TRILLIANT heat protection spray on each section I achieved soft, gentle curls. This make over was completed by lightly spraying the hair with SHAPER FIERCE hairspray & LUXE OIL SHINE SPRAY.

City Superclinic

Filling gaps in Mackay’s health care services is the motivating force behind Dr. John and Elizabeth McIntosh opening City Superclinic Mackay, in Ooralea. The Superclinic is the fifth edition in the Superclinic family, adding to clinics already established in Rural View, Walkerston, Marian and Hay Point. As Dr. McIntosh explains, City Superclinic Mackay will be at the heart of the other clinics, supporting them with administration and Allied Health services and as such is the largest. “It is 2000 square metres, more than 50 percent larger again than our Rural View Superclinic. “City Superclinic will be the base for our administration as well as a range of Allied Health services, including dieticians, physiotherapists, diabetic educators, exercise physiologists, psychologists and more.” “We are also working with Queensland Health and local mental health services to provide more obtainable help for the region. There are too many people falling through the cracks and not receiving the help they need. We hope to fill those gaps by training GP’s to a higher level to assist with mental health as well as providing more psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses and counsellors,” he said. City Superclinic Mackay will also be home to an exciting high-level performance

Mackay training centre, catering to elite athletes as well as occupational health rehabilitation. The purpose-built gym facility will house specialty equipment, rarely seen out of the capital cities, and is at the level of the Australian Institute of Sport. This will include the use of Biomechanics where sensors can detect weaknesses in injured patients and measure the level of force produced by athletes. The facility will include two dedicated occupational health specialist doctors, a level of service never seen before in Mackay. Dr. Ray Shah is a GP and sports medicine physician who has worked with elite athletes and Olympians in the UK. His services are available for high performance athletes looking for advice in nutrition, weight loss and specialist performance testing. City Superclinic Mackay features a 100 person conference room which will be used for medical conferences and educational seminars. It will be available to the public for hire, providing a spacious meeting facility with top technology equipment. As it is located across the road from CQUniversity, City Superclinic Mackay will also become a training and research facility, with easy access for students to train in specialist areas. Dr. McIntosh hopes to see it evolve into a research hub for various aspects of health and medicine. Like the Superclinic at Rural View, the Ooralea-based Superclinic will also have an emergency room, used to take some of the pressure off Mackay’s Base Hospital. This can be accessed for conditions such as lacerations or acute asthma, to reduce waiting times commonly experienced at hospital. It’s part of Dr. John and Elizabeth’s mission to improve the quality of GP care available in Mackay. “We have always looked to see how we can provide services in a better way. “A few years ago it was common to be told to wait days to get a doctor’s appointment. Well that’s just ridiculous. It’s unacceptable not to be seen that day if you’re unwell, which is why we introduced guaranteed same day appointments.” “It’s also unacceptable for a patient to wait an hour or two to see their doctor when they have an appointment. We understand that, yes, occasionally a doctor can run late, but this should be an exception, not a regular occurrence. Our app is a userfriendly way we have streamlined appointments and alert patients if their doctor is running behind time so they know in advance,” Dr. McIntosh said. You may think that all that is missing from this new-age, technologically advanced Superclinic is a robot to greet you as you walk in the door, and you’d be correct! Plans are in place to introduce Pepper, the first humanoid robot capable of recognising the principal human emotions, such as sadness. Pepper will provide CQUniversity students with research opportunities and will add a fun new dimension to your doctor’s visit when it arrives. Opening early March, City Superclinic Mackay will bring a new level of health services to the community.

TodayI choose happiness Have more poignant words ever been spoken? This advice comes from 19-year-old Mackay local, Bethany Carlton. Bethany should have been able to spend her last 12 months enjoying the innocence of her final teenage years, but instead, she had to undergo a grueling year of chemotherapy and uncertainty. It was her strength and positivity which allowed her to rise above the pain and anguish. Bethany was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 17 years old. She had the cancerous lump removed five days after her 18th birthday, however her battle was far from over. Less than a month after her operation, Bethany underwent further testing, where it was discovered she had a rare form of muscle cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma. She was told that she would have to move to Brisbane for at least 12 months of chemotherapy. “At that point it had become too much. I cried and cried and cried with mum, scared and upset about what would be next,” Bethany said. Unfortunately for Bethany and her mum, Mybritt Larsen, the next piece of news was not good. “I have something to tell you. I have cancer.” Less than three months after Bethany had started her chemotherapy, Mybritt was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had to break that news to her daughter in hospital. “I just started laughing and we both laughed, because it was just so ridiculous. We were both upset for each other and scared for each other so it was really hard,” Bethany said. The mother and daughter were

able to schedule their treatments apart so one could look after the other when they were feeling unwell. They supported each other through arduous treatments and the pain of watching a loved one suffer. Their partners were also supportive during this time, Mybritt commenting that they have been incredible. “We are lucky to have two amazing partners in our lives who have helped every step of the way, she said. Mybritt has just passed the halfway point in her treatment. “It’s a long and draining process,” she said. Bethany finished chemotherapy in November, and is doing everything she can to live each day to the fullest. “During treatment it was exhausting to do the smallest of tasks. A very generous friend from school is helping me to get back in shape again,” Bethany said. “I am so lucky to wake each morning feeling good and ready for the day! In a modern world it’s easy to get caught up in material possessions, but life is so much more important than how much money you have or what you own. It’s more important to live a happy and healthy life.” With a passion for dance and movement, Bethany’s ambition is to create a series of dance performances representing her journey. To support Bethany’s dream, you can contribute to a Go Fund Me page, called Cancer – My Story Through Dance. Bethany has one simple message left. “Be kind. You never know what another person may be going through.” Wise words, from a woman so young, who has been through so much.

Osteopaths..what do they do exactly? Osteopaths are not yet very well known in Queensland, yet they are allied health practitioners, recognized by Medicare and most health funds, to deliver a specific service to Australians.

INTRODUCING THE NEW PELLEVE TREATMENT FOR FIRMER, TIGHTER AND YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN A comfortable non-surgical treatment that delivers constant, gradual radiofrequency energy deep into the skin causing it to build up where the skin and fat layer meet, reducing wrinkles and tightening he skin. The increasing heat modifies the collagen bundles deep within the skin causing contraction and over time stimulating the growth of new collagen. It is a gentle process with no down time, the treatment takes less than an hour and results can be seen after just one session.

So what do Osteopaths do exactly? Osteopaths are trained for five years at University and develop a highly tuned sense of touch (palpation) alongside a thorough knowledge of Anatomy, NeuroAnatomy,Physiology, Neurology and orthopedics as well as differential diagnosis..and more. Osteopathic investigations rely on a keen sense of observation of the patient’s body standing, sitting and in motion; as well as mobility testing of each joint looking for variants in the normal ranges of motion (hypermobility/restrictions), and palpation of muscles and the fascial system. The 30-45 minutes treatments are delivered on an individual level as each patient requires different types of manual interventions depending on their fitness, age, state of hydration or toxicity, energy and emotional wellbeing. Osteopaths use various forms of manipulation (including the famous clicking) of the whole body and search for health in each patient by enhancing the body mechanics, but they may choose other methods such as soft tissue releases, stretching, articulation of the joints, and many other techniques specific to our profession. Osteopathy is a holistic modality, and as such a patient will be asked many questions about their health and well being, as the treatment includes advice on posture, nutrition and exercises to correct existing imbalances - even advice regarding stress. Well known overseas and a growing profession in Australia, it has proven popular with patients looking for a different perspective on their wellbeing. After over 8 years in the Whitsundays we are growing our team of Osteopaths to provide continuity of care to our community.

Janelle and Shona ride for a cure We need to find a cure. It is a sentiment shared by millions and is the driving force behind two Whitsunday women who are planning on pedaling 1,520km in the epic fundraising challenge, Tour de Cure.

To hear the stories from the small communities we visited on our journey and what the fundraising does for patients suffering from cancer only made it more important to help again,” they said.

What makes this effort more remarkable is that it’s the second year in a row these ladies have participated in the ride from Brisbane to Sydney. However, to Janelle Eastwood and Shona Russell, the 10 days they will spend on bicycles is minimal compared to the years of battles their loved ones have fought against cancer. “A close friend of ours has had a long, brave battle for survival for more than 20 years. She is our inspiration to pedal hard.”

Head to tourdecure.com.au and search for Janelle and Shona’s pages to donate.

“Shona lost her mother to cancer and I lost my father. There was always hope that one day there would be a cure. It didn’t come in time for our loved ones, but there is hope a cure will arrive in time to help those in dire need now,” Janelle said.

Even if you’re not in a position to donate, please share a page via social media to spread the word. Together, we will find a cure.

The friends had previously competed in triathlons and iron man events for more than 12 years, giving them a strong base to build their cycling endurance from. In addition to the many hours each week dedicated to training, Janelle and Shona also have a fundraising target of $12,000 each to achieve. “We have a major event planned called A Night to Remember, similar to a fundraising event we held last year but with a bit of a twist. We are in the process of organising the details and hope it will be as successful as last year, thanks to the wonderful community support we received.” “We are lucky to have the support of the Rotary raffle again this year and have an allocated Tour de Cure website page where people can donate and write us a message of inspiration,” Shona said. The ladies have strong motivation for wanting to take part in this event for a second year. “Having taken part in the Tour De Cure last year proved, without a doubt, that the money we raise does make a big difference. www.corelife.com.au 59

Hearing solutions to keep family harmony A PROBLEM my wife and I have personally had to overcome involves my father-in-law and our own wedding day. My wife and I are got married on 10 October 2010.

a hearing impaired person at a wedding was my sister’s nuptials. My grandfather was severely deaf from a life of working around machinery, shooting and serving his country.

Unfortunately this day fell on the same day as the Bathurst 1000 and my father-in-law is probably the biggest V8 racing enthusiast I know so we had a dilemma on our hands.

Unfortunately, because he had left the treatment of his hearing loss too late, the damage to his speech nerves was too severe and he was unable to hear clearly from longer distances or in background noise.

He is also partially deaf in one ear and consequently I fitted him with a very advanced hearing aid. Amongst other things modern hearing aids now have wireless Bluetooth compatibility. With this technology, I was able to marry his love for racing with the love for his daughter by setting his hearing aid up so it could receive live streamed radio without any cords or leads. He could partake in the wedding ceremony whilst listening to the race live via his hearing aid without anyone, especially my mother-in-law, being any the wiser. Another example of where technology was used to help

installed which can also pick up the in-house microphones and transmit them directly to hearing aids that have telecoils. To get over the problems with general conversation, I also set up the FM system to use a remote directional microphone. He just directed the microphone into the general direction of where someone was talking and his hearing aids picked up clearly the person the microphone was directed at. He told me he heard and understood almost every single word in all the environments where he would normally have heard nothing.

This made it impossible for him to hear the priest at the church, speeches and general conversation during the reception. To solve this problem I was able to set up an FM system to the microphones at the church and the reception venue.

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

having to change the settings in the hearing aid. They are also much smaller and less subjected to electrical interference which can occur with FM systems. I have found there’s always a solution to a hearing problem. You just got to know who to ask.

This was about five years ago and since then the technology has evolved even further. Instead of FM systems you can get little Bluetooth lapel mics which you just clip to the collar of whoever you want to hear and it automatically picks them up and streams straight to the hearing aid. This is much easier than the FM system as it connects automatically without

So, whenever someone spoke into the microphone at both venues, the FM system sent the signal directly to his hearing aids and all he heard was the person talking into the microphone as if he was talking straight into his ears. Furthermore most churches have induction loop systems

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD AND YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE FOOD AND WHY?

I’m happy to try most foods! They taste good with hot chocolate!

I just think that it is disgusting!

CHILLE

MADELINE

My favourite food is potatoes because they are very versatile and taste good with nearly everything! Another reason might be because of my Irish heritage as they are a big staple in Ireland...but I could tell you a million reasons why I like them so much!

My favourite food are mangoes! They are sweet, juicy and delicious. I love to eat them cold, in smoothies and make mango sorbet. I love that I can pick mangoes locally when they are in season and we have a mango tree in our backyard.

My least favourite food on the other hand is fruit I don’t eat any type of fruit I don’t like fruit because it is so slimy and they texture is weird and I just think that it is disgusting!

I am happy to try most foods but I am not a big fan of seafood. I have tried fish, prawns and calamari. It is too strong for my taste buds and I don’t like it.

OCEA NZ Cookie Time Cookies Why? Because my second favourite food it chocolate and it has chunks of chocolate in them, you can only get them in NZ and we buy them when we go skiing. Mum never says no because she loves them to and they are giant size cookies also my Gran sends them over at Christmas time. They taste good with hot chocolate when you dunk them. We have them at ski school. Least Favourite? I hate carrots because they don’t have enough sugar on them and I like food that has sugar in it.

Retained Neonatal Reflexes Explained One of the human bodies most amazing systems is the Central Nervous System, consisting of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves that communicate with every cell of the body. Development of this system begins very early in utero, at approximately 3 weeks gestation and continues to mature for the remainder of our lives. While in utero and for the first few months of life, our bodies lack the physical capabilities to fend for themselves against the stressors of the outside world. As a protective mechanism, the nervous system develops an automatic set of reflexes to allow the baby to survive. For example when we touch a hot stove, our body pulls our hand away before we are even consciously aware that it was hot. These reflexes protect our bodies, ensure health and promote survival. Ideally as the child’s brain develops and at developmentally appropriate times, these reflexes should be inhibited or “switched off.” However this is not always the case, and subsequently these reflexes might remain dominant. This means that the nervous system will react inappropriately and undesirably in certain situations, potentially affecting the development, speech, learning, social interaction, coordination, concentration and behavior of that child (or even adult). So why does the brain not inhibit these reflexes you might ask? The answer is excessive or untimely stress on the developing brain and these stressors can be physical (for example birth trauma), chemical, or emotional in nature. At Little Sprouts Chiropractic Mackay, our Chiropractors are expertly trained in assessing for these retained reflexes. Through very specific and gentle cranial and spinal adjustments, they aim to reduce the stress on the bodies’ nervous system, allowing for proper integration and down-regulation of these reflexes. These corrections can be likened to fixing the “hardware” of a computer and the performance or abilities of the child can be considered the “software”. To try and fix the software when the hardware is malfunctioning, takes up a lot of memory and slows processing (similar to what we see with learning difficulties). However With the right structure, or “hardware” in place, this does not mean that the unit functions perfectly, but it makes correcting any “software” concerns a lot easier. To have yourself, or your child assessed, please don’t hesitate to contact us on (07) 4898 1020 or at admin@littlesproutschiropractic.com.au

Put your hand up! I would like to take you back to a childhood scene of mine- it involves my three brothers and is one that I remember vividly. A young girl attempts to organise her birthday party guests into a performance for the grown-ups, only to be taken aside and chastised for being ‘too bossy’. Those are the kind of things I did…I put on plays, I organised birthday parties, played teacher and got told off for being ‘too bossy’. I know many of you will have shared a similar experience. Women in education enjoy hearing the stories of real-life women because we have a connection to them, by way of a sisterhood. Women are socialized and conditioned to pull back from success. I have always challenged the way confident young girls are labelled ‘bossy’ or ‘pushy’ while boys who act the same way are often described as ‘outgoing’ or ‘authoritative’. Self-confidence matters, and it is played out every single day, whether you are a working woman or you are a woman in education. In the work environment, be more confident. Seize opportunities, even if you’re not sure you are qualified. In schools, young women are encouraged to feel proud and accept acknowledgement of their successwithout being ridiculed, even by other women. Our girls are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. It is so easy for us to doubt ourselves, or our ability, before we ‘put our hand up’. Makewith afooddateand wine Nestled in the hillside of Airlie Beach is the beautiful Peppers Airlie Beach and we’re lucky enough as locals to have access to their signature restaurant Tides. Tides Restaurant and Bar boasts uninterrupted views of the Whitsundays, from their birds eye vantage point you really get to take in the magic of our tropical paradise. The architecture and location really set the scene for a special meal, you instantly have the expectation that what you’re about to devour will be nothing short of brilliant. The atmosphere in the completely open air restaurant is casual yet sophisticated with the ocean facing vista dramatised by a 2 level water feature at ground level wrapping the entire length of the restaurant. Led by Executive Chef Gregory Devine, the culinary team at Tides Restaurant and Bar have created amazing signature tasting plates as part of the Peppers Boarding Pass Taste Menu. Available for both lunch and dinner you can experience ‘Crisp and Aromatic & Rich and Textural’ combinations of food and wine pairings. With a selection of 4 taste plates on offer I was lucky enough to try the Chang Mai pork belly with tamarind dipping sauce, matched with Pewsey Vale ‘Prima’ Riesling - a match made in heaven on a balmy summers day. Wine lovers, you must put this on your to do list! The most surprising dish of my dining experience was the Zangi - Japanese Fried Chicken, it resembled dehydrated beef jerky and I loved the sheer shock of putting it in my mouth and it being soft with a teriyaki style marinate. It’s one of those dishes

that once you’ve had it you know you’ll go back to a restaurant just to order it again! As a local, Tides Restaurant and Bar is often overlooked with it’s out of the way location, but that’s what makes it special. When I asked Executive Chef Gregory what he loved about the menus he created this season he said “Each menu has a significant food flow, some may be rich and warm, some may be tart and sour. Designing this menu we went for a more causal tasting flavours from around the world”. The tasting plates are affordable with 1 taste plate and matched wine costing $15. The overall menu at Tides Restaurant and Bar is modern Australian with globally inspired flavours... Moroccan perfumed lamb cutlets with hummus, barbecued margarita chicken tostadas, chilli caramel pork belly with nuoc cham, Spanish style chicken with rioja style potatoes and chorizo, traditional Nepalese chicken curry and to finish a good old Australian sticky toffee banana pudding with honeycomb ice cream. For best results you will have prepared your soil for three months by adding manures, blood and bone and some light fluffy mulch. eg chopped sugar cane mulch.

North QLD is the opposite to everywhere else in Oz. Rule of thumb is to plant in April, harvest in June, plant July, harvest September. After this nothing else will grow except herbs, water melons. pumpkin, watermelon and honey dew.

Sorrento Restaurant & Bar Name: Petrit Istogu

Favourite food: Hmmmm, no favourite, as long as it’s fresh. I love all good food. Favourite celebrity chef: René Redzepi Are you an entrée, main or dessert kind of person? Definitely got to have it all. I believe there’s always room for dessert no matter how big entrée and mains are. What’s your signature dish? I do not cook, even though my wife wishes I did. If I had to though, it would be a nice mediterranean salad with fetta, olives the lot, even bacon. Where does your passion for food come from? My passion comes from my family, because when I was growing up we were lucky to have fresh produce and my mum created the most wonderful dishes. Food brings people together!

Parsley, Basil, Oregano, Thyme are all doing really well at the moment

Did you know? Coriander is really fussy to grow here. It only grows in cooler months: July - September. Thai mint is very similar to coriander and does well all year round so you can use it as a substitute. Sage rosemary and thyme are dessert herbs, they require a 1/4 of the water of other herbs so plant them way from the main patch Mint and parsley do not like each other so they have to be at opposite ends of your garden bed.

In one sentence tell us why people should dine in your restaurant: Everything is made in house, even our pasta. Sorrento Restaurant and Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a stunning Whitsunday sunset. Located at Abell Point Marina, guests can sit on their modern al fresco verandas for a chilled drink and casual dining. The menu is Mediterranean inspired with pasta made on the premises, homemade pizzas and fresh seafood platters.

Where does your passion for food come from? My nan. She did lots of home-cooking and I always enjoyed cooking with her. Luv a Coffee, at Whitsunday Plaza, just next Big W, is this lively café with plenty of selection. They have a huge variety of cakes, including many gluten free options. with Rebecca Anderson from Walter’s Lounge

The Wine list at Walter’s Lounge has been created to be versatile for everyone’s budget and taste. Bottle prices range between $35 - $59. We also have Champagne available as well as a Reserve Wine list for something a little bit special. Our wines have been selected to educate your palate without pushing the boundaries too far. Also they can’t be found anywhere else in town! Expert tips: · When pairing food and wine I believe to either compliment or contrast in flavours and also textures. · Champagne or sparkling wine is great with soft cheeses, as the bead in the wine cuts through the richness and creaminess of the cheese. · A very typical pairing is Shiraz and beef, due to the tannins in the wine it combines well with the proteins in the meat to create a lush, flavourful taste. Cabernet Sauvignon works well too. · Keep in mind that if the beef is served with delicate flavours, select a wine which is slightly lighter in flavours and tannins – like a Tempranillo. · For someone new to wine I would suggest our Vermentino in the whites. It’s a light, fresh style and in the reds a Beaujolais, it has delicate berry flavours with little tannins – served chilled, perfect for our climate too. Wine is a personal discovery, enjoy what you like and don’t be afraid to try something new!

25TH APRIL | ANZAC DAY This annual solemn day of remembrance will see many of us get up and out of bed while it is still dark to mark the occasion with the rest of the community at the dawn service. This will be followed by an ANZAC breakfast and for those that are keen; a few games of two up.
