“I would definitely recommend that others go to one of these seminars to get information and to be a bit more confident about your rights when it comes to property and children. I also found it helpful to know what to expect if I went to court.” “When you enter into a process, such as divorce etc, not many people have much of an idea as to what the future will bring re: the legal process. I found the discussion around the process and what to expect very useful. I had thought I would be in a position where the law would be against me, however, having sat through the seminar I was a lot more comfortable as to my rights and also my responsibilities in the process to come. I also had some idea of how the law would view my situation and where I had opportunities to look for an outcome more in my favour.” “I was definitely unsure whether I should attend the information presentation, but am glad I did. It was very informative and will help me to make decisions. I was able to sit in the back of the room (which is what I wanted!). I was able to listen to the questions everyone else asked and get the information I needed. It was private and a very easy-going discussion, which I thought was good.”

THE MOMENT MY WORLD STOPPED! It was meant to be a normal annual check up. As I lay on the bed and watched my doctors face expression change, whilst performing a breast examination, I knew instantly that he thought something wasn’t quite right. Not too concerned, commenting that he didn’t think it was something sinister he asked me to come back in five weeks to perform another check. Trying my hardest to push it to the back of my mind, I continued with life as per normal, or so I thought. Five days before I was due to go back to the doctors for my follow up I started to feel an overwhelming feeling of dread. It took over! Literally, from the moment I opened my eyes till I could finally fall asleep at night. I couldn’t eat, function or think about anything else. Giving myself a breast examination every couple of hours, trying to assure myself that every bump or lump was the same in both breasts. I went over and recalled every single word my doctor had said, “I’m not that concerned, I just want to be thorough, I would be very surprised if it was anything” etc. Everywhere there were reminders. Turning on the TV: a young lady was having both breasts removed from cancer. Attending my sons football game: a poster on the back of the toilet door about breast screening. I just couldn’t escape it. I just kept telling myself everything was fine and that this was never going to happen to me, it only happened to other people! Absolutely sure that my doctor would tell me everything was ok I was rendered speechless and couldn’t hear anything he said after, “I can still feel the lump, and we need to get this checked out further!” My only thought was, “This isn’t happening, this isn’t real!”. My world just stopped! I was lucky enough to get an appointment the next day. I think the lady on the other end of the phone could sense my fear and anxiety. However, I felt the emotional roller coaster I’d already been on just jumped into overdrive. My thoughts were consumed with what ifs. I was not able to look at my son or husband without crying, imagining all the things I would miss or how life would be for them both if…… My close friends and family gave me all the support they could and yet I never have felt so alone in my entire life. Whilst waiting in a room full of people you could sense they were experiencing the same fear I was. I’d catch someone’s eye, and without words, you would tell each other, “I’m sorry you are here too” and “I know exactly how you are feeling”. Tears would just run down my face.
Note... My radiographer sensed I was far from ok. She was amazingly empathetic and explained that it could be many other things and not to just assume it was Cancer. When I asked her about my age and how young I was to be in this situation, she shocked me with her answer. “Rebecca, 70% of the mammograms and scans we perform here are on woman aged between 30 and 40 years old. It is in this 10-year period that a woman’s breasts change the most. So don’t feel scared that you are here and in this situation.” I was shocked. How did I not know this?
I am telling my story, not because I am special or anything that I experienced would be anymore or less than anyone else in that same situation. I’m telling it because I can and, by telling it, I hope to inspire, remind, or give just one person the strength to go and get that thing that’s worrying them checked. Or perhaps help someone make the resolution to have regular annual check ups with your doctor that includes a skin check, breast examination (no matter what age), pap smear and blood tests, or to go get that mammogram that is well overdue.
With my husband never an arms length away I lay on the bed for an ultrasound, breasts out, shaking and looking at this young girl who, literally, held my future in her hands. Trying to make me comfortable she talked about the process, herself and her life, not really taking in anything she said, I could tell she was doing everything she could to make me relax. I’m not sure if she realised that my entire life hang on her every word. Whilst preforming the scan she explained what I was seeing on the screen. The different layers of the breast, what was healthy breast tissue and what she was looking out for?
You cannot control whether you get cancer of not. Cancer has no limitations and doesn’t discriminate. Oh yes we have the power to live a healthy life, eat well, don’t drink excessively, exercise and don’t smoke etc. However, even with all these precautions it doesn’t necessarily mean you are excluded from the risk. The only power and control you have, outside of living a healthy life style, is to get a regular check up with your doctor so if cancer does strike, you get it early enough that you have a better chance of a successful treatment outcome.
There were moments when she would stop mid conversation, go back over the area she was looking at and explain the strange black circler things that would pop up. Sometimes it was my ribs or cyst or breast duct. Then she said “Oh, I will need to get the doctor to have a look.” OMG! Never in my life has someone’s words meant more to me than hers in that moment. It turns out she was just being thorough.
How has my perspective changed? I realise that there is nothing more important than my health and the people I love. No amount of money or success could replace this. I am grateful for the amazing people in my life. I am lucky to have a doctor who is thorough and most of all I have a newfound admiration for those people and their families who are fighting that battle against cancer.
The Doctor said, “Yes, I can see what you are concerned about, however that is a normal breast duct. So I asked if it was normal? “Yes Rebecca you have nothing to be worried about!” What wonderful words to hear! Relief flooded over me.
If you can, please donate to any charities, especially your local Relay for Life teams that support these people in their fight.
He still wanted me to have a mammogram, because he always gets a mammogram of everyone that has been referred. “It’s just a normal process to check we haven’t missed anything and to have a record on file.” The lady doing the mammogram was lovely, gentle and professional. She explained the new mammogram machine, how it was designed by a woman and had half the radiation of normal mammogram machines. She explained that this machine would take a 3D image of every layer of the breast from my chest plate through to the nipple. After the scan, I was informed that the images looked completely normal, but needed to be checked by the radiologist. Exactly 15mins later, the same lady walked straight up to me and said, “Rebecca you are able to go home, and everything is normal!” I wanted to jump up and kiss her. As I walked out of the clinic tears of joy, relief and the feeling that I had my life back took over. However, I knew right there and then that my life perspective had changed forever. I religiously get my annual check-ups, however, last year I missed it because I was “too busy” and “couldn’t find the time”. I was extremely lucky all was ok but I got the minutest taste for a very short while of what it is like for the thousands of people a year who aren’t that lucky.
Remember, you have one life, and in a blink of an eye it can change forever. Live everyday. Really live it. Give 100% and know that this is the best and all you can do, and the outcome is and will be whatever it is meant to be. It’s not for you to decide. Thank God everyday for all your blessings and take control of what you can.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT MONEY MAKES YOU HAPPY AND WHY?
You have to be happy within yourself and about your life
Yes I believe money makes you happy but it’s not the basis from which happiness comes from. I believe money makes you happy as it allows you to fulfil your dreams, accomplish goals, provide stability and shelter for yourself and your family. In my opinion, you have to be happy within yourself and about your life for money to “make” you happy.
BRITTANY INTUITION THE ART OF HAIR, MACKAY

Having your health, family and friends is the thing that makes me most happy
I think everyone would be lying if they said that money does not make them happy. I think it is a great tool to motivate us to get out of bed every morning and also a great tool to have to raise a family and give them a comfortable lifestyle.
Happiness is about comfort and strong relationships with family and friends
I think money can go a long way to helping you find happiness, but its all about your priorities and values in life. I’ve been to the slums in Fiji where kids have absolutely nothing and live in huts made from corrugated iron, and they were the most happy kids I’ve ever seen.
In saying that I also believe in the saying, “the best things in life are free” having your health, family and friends is the thing that makes me most happy.
If what you’re about is passive income and a five star view, then sure money can make you happy. But for a lot of people happiness is about comfort and strong relationships with family and friends.

You could be feeling the need to be free of some of the responsibilities you have been carrying lately. There could be some travel coming up, but the tendency to go to extremes should be nipped in the bud.
You could be just a little too hesitant in deciding on something important and you could be missing out on a good deal. Not wise to rely entirely on your own judgment. Ask for advice. Personal relationships could be troubling you. Just try to take things calmly with your partners. Don’t blow up things out of proportion and say things you really do not mean.
You could find it hard to keep up with things happening around you. There are some confusing aspects operating in your sector. Just let things happen and sit tight at the moment. Soon you will be in control again. A very lucky period in all aspects and some of your inner most wishes could come true now.

You could be craving for some luxury and may even try to indulge in something you can’t really afford. Hasty decisions could put you on the wrong track, so check everything before promising anything important. Mostly it should be a happier time.

BORN BORN TO RACE The sights and sounds of motor racing have always drawn Keelans attention From the moment Keelan O’Brien could sit next to his dad, he would sit (eating a packet of chips) and watch V8 Supercars, he loved the high paced action and sound of the sport. Keelan sat in his first kart, a tandem go-kart at the young age of 3. This further ignited his passion for speed and the sport. At age 4, Keelan’s dad took him to his first ever live race, the Inaugural Dunlop Townsville 400. Keelan’s eyes lit up at his first glimpse of one of the race cars and said, “Look Dad, a V8 Supercar!” At 6, all Keelan’s Christmases came at once when he received his first kart. Three months later with lots of practice and at the official race age of 7 Keelan began competing at the Mackay Kart Club track.

Ring Lindsay, John or Jeff for any tyre or service requirements. Come in and see us 165 Boundary Rd East, Paget 4740, just down from the airport
While he’s not always the fastest on the track, his determination, enthusiasm, attention to detail, and willingness to listen are some of his great attributes. Outside of racing Keelan is a regular 11-yearold that hates doing homework and loves to pick fights with his little sister; but once that helmet goes on, the game face comes and it is all about the race ahead. After a challenging year in his second hand kart, up against newer karts, he beat the odds and placed third in the Mackay Kart Club Championship. Because of that determination and commitment, once again Christmas came early, and he was given his first ever new kart. With the arrival of the new kart his racing has gone from strength to strength. He’s been able to win a race and has been on multiple podiums. However Keelan has changed his focus from being a V8
TO RACE Supercar driver to a grand touring driver and wants to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, Morgan Haber. Keelan won a competition last year with the Mackay Kart Club to shadow Morgan during a race at Sandown Raceway, near Melbourne. “It was a truly great experience and it only further fueled his passion for racing. Morgan has been a great mentor for Keelan. He goes out of his way to offer advice and help when Keelan asks,” Keelan’s father, Tim O’Brien, commented. Morgan recognises the responsibility of being a role model and is excited to see Keelan, along with other Mackay racing prodigies, achieve their dreams of racing at the top level, whether it’s in Australia or internationally. Morgan’s journey through the ranks hasn’t been without its hiccups, but “that’s racing” as they say. In 2016, Morgan made the switch to GT driving, a big change from the V8’s – left hand drive, better aerodynamics, higher speeds and racing seasoned GT drivers from Europe. The best in the world, some would say. Morgan is one of the converted. Racing GT cars is where he sees his future, although, of late, you would have seen Morgan behind the wheel of a Marc Car. A purpose built car for endurance racing, which is made on the Gold Coast. Morgan raced in the coveted Dubai 24H Race earlier in the year and he dominated the Mountain at the Bathurst 12H, coming away with a win in the I Class and 13th overall. The big question is: What are Morgan’s plans for 2016?? After deciding to move on from racing with Erebus Motorsport, the Mackay driver has been a noticeable absentee from the grid at Clipsal and admits he will also miss the Perth round. “We’ve worked hard in the off season
on putting together a deal for 2016 and, sometimes, these things can’t be rushed. I’m really happy with the decision I’ve made and I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of a GT3 car”. As for when we’ll know what he’s up to, the only comment we can get is “You’ll have to wait and see.” As an 11-year-old racing in the Cadet 12 category, Keelan is looking forward to another year of racing in this class before advancing to a faster kart. Without the support of the Mackay Kart Club and sponsors, Mackay Kart Supplies, Kens Plumbing Supplies, KO Fitness and Nauticare Boat Management and Repair; he wouldn’t be able to race towards his want of becoming a professional driver. Morgan looks forward to extending his mentorship with Keelan and hopes to race against him in a GT one day. Keep an eye out on Morgan’s website (www.morganhaber.com) and Facebook page for an announcement coming soon. Stay up to date with Keelan’s progress on his Facebook page, Keelan Hansen O’Brien.

“Your business is only as good as its team.” IT’S A MANTRA WHICH WHITSUNDAY AUTOMOTIVE OWNERS, JACK PATTON AND GINA SOKOLOV, RUN THEIR BUSINESS BY. “Our workmanship is key to the reputation of our business, which is why we have invested in skilled mechanics. Jareth Corben, Jayden Hiscox and apprentice Joel Martin are the guys who have helped shape our business to what it is today.” “They are confident yet humble, with the ability to explain to our customers what vehicle repairs are needed and why, in a way they can understand. They appreciate that not everyone is a mechanic and take the time to fully explain repairs and costings.” “We’re proud of our team and what we have achieved together,” Jack said. With a love of all things mechanical, Jack started his apprenticeship as a light vehicle mechanic when he was 15. He transitioned into heavy vehicles and moved to Queensland to work in the mining industry. Keen to get away from a mining roster, Jack and Gina saw the opportunity to purchase Whitsunday Auto Repairs in 2012. Whitsunday Automotive service all types of vehicles, makes and models. “Our log book servicing means your new car warranty isn’t affected. We do this by using only the highest quality parts and lubricants on the market.” “Our range of services is diverse from diagnostics, brake and clutch repairs, modifications and anything else automotive. We also sell a massive range of 4wd and camping accessories and suspension..” “Our pricing and workmanship is what we are known for, so it’s worth getting a quote from us for anything automotive,” Jack said. In the four years that Jack and Gina have owned the business, it’s grown from strength to strength. Two years ago, they moved the business to its current location on Shute Harbour Road, and dropped the ‘repairs’ from the business name to reflect the wide scope of automotive products and services it offers. The couple were recently approached by the managing director of Ironman 4x4 to expand their representation of its brand in Airlie Beach. “We are really impressed with the Ironman brand and jumped at the chance to expand our business with them. We’re lucky to have a well-appointed building to work from in such a
great location. Once the new signage is put in place and the showroom completed it will look unbelievable,” Gina said. Their official opening of the new Ironman Showroom will be on the weekend of 28-29th May. “We would love to invite the locals to our official Ironman opening on the 28th-29th May. The weekend is set to be a huge event, with 4WD and camping accessories, great deals and loads of prizes. We want to welcome all the local families down. We will have a jumping castle for the little kids and plenty of toys for the big kids too!” says Gina. Gina and Jack enjoy the great outdoors whenever they can and are in the process of forming a local 4WD club, to help like-minded adventurers discover some of the region’s beautiful hinterland. “The idea came about with friends and a few beers. There aren’t many tracks near Airlie Beach but we are hoping to change that. The club will launch at our Ironman grand opening and will run as a non-profit organisation for the benefit of local members,” Jack said. Gina’s other passion is for local wildlife and she has recently become a carer for Fauna Rescue Whitsundays. “I’ve always been an animal person and dreamed of having my own farm. We do have quite the funny crowd in the backyard; a horse, three goats, two dogs and three wallabies!” “I became a carer after Jack noticed a baby wallaby poke its head out of its mother’s pouch on the side of the road. The mother had already passed away and the little one was extremely hot and hungry. He was tiny and had no fur when we took him home and nursed to him to health. He’s still with us, happy and healthy, almost ready for release.” “I decided if we had the means to do so, the farm and flexibility with work, then we should. Fauna Rescue Whitsundays does so much for our wildlife and I wanted to be part of that,” Gina said. Originally from Melbourne, the pair enjoy camping in Eungella; unless the Richmond Tigers are playing! Jack is a passionate AFL fan and supports his favourite team from afar in the Whitsundays.
Whitsund “Being the owners of Whitsunday Automotive has been challenging, kind of like being a Richmond supporter, although the business is definitely more rewarding. Our team is amazing, our customers are the best and we couldn’t ask for a better place to be. Now we just need to work on the Tigers!” Jack laughs. Five local women were part of the epic group of more than 1000 women who re-wrote the history books, setting two world records; the greatest number of women at a motorcycle meet, and the greatest number of women together on motorcycles in a group ride. Linda Norman, Corinne Newbold, Helen Yasso, Sharon Ridgeway and Tracey McConnell were part of the record breaking group and have a lot in common. They are all mothers and grandmothers; but what has united them is their love of riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. Linda is the local Qride motorcycle trainer and decided to get a local group of girls together to ride to Dubbo to re-claim their record.

“Corinne and I travelled down for the initial setting of the record in 2014, in Ballina. At that time we were also accompanied by Roweena McNicoll. Roweena joined our 2016 venture but unfortunately had to turn back home when she found out that a family member was not well,” Linda said. Getting to Dubbo to take part in the record breaking ride was just as much fun for the ladies as the event itself. They averaged 600kms per day on less-than-desirable road surfaces. “We rode through some amazing countryside and there is truly no better way to see it than on a motorbike. You see the whole picture, smell the

AND THEY DIDN’T JUST TAKE IT BACK, THEY SMASHED IT! bush, dodge the potholes and pick the odd bug out of your teeth.” “We had many laughs along the way, especially when we would pull up out the front of a pub for lunch. We certainly got some weird looks when five girls came out and grabbed the bars and threw a leg over those bikes.” “We had a little fun along the way too and dropped the jaws of a few road workers,” Linda said. As you could imagine, five ladies with a passion for riding Harleys tend to hold slightly different conversations than your average grannies! “Our conversation is probably not what normally goes on with a girls trip away. Sometimes we chat about how to get the cow shit out from under your nails when you follow behind too many cattle trucks, or it may be about a good mascara that doesn’t run, because your eyes are watering so badly from the wind rushing past.” “Sometimes we discuss the advantages of fitting a Terry Woods camm to get better performance, or remove the catalytic converter from out of the headers or what to do if your shifter falls off.” Corinne and Linda have done a number of trips together on their Harleys, including the famous STURGIS motorcycle rally in America, one of the biggest in the world. These women are the true embodiment of the saying, “Four wheels may get you there, but two wheels make the journey memorable.”

SHOW ME THE MONEY! The million dollar question is, how do we keep our hardearned cash in our pocket for longer?
Many Australian households overextend their finances as a matter of necessity for survival and then fall into a perpetual debt trap.
While it’s easier said than done, the secret to getting rich is to spend less than you make.
With high unemployment and tough local economic times, more households are reaching the end of their tether, wondering how they will get through the rest of this year.
It seems simple, yet it’s a concept the majority of us struggle to fully grasp. According to the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre study in 2015, the average Australian household is three times greater in debt than the average household was 25 years ago. In 1990, the average household debt was equivalent to six months worth of their annual income. Fast-forward to a new generation and 25 years later an average households debt represents 18 months of its annual income. In fact, Australian households are placed among the top eight countries with the highest debt levels in the world, with more average household debt than comparable economies like Canada. Did you know: Household debt in Australia amounts to an eyewatering amount of $1.6trillion. To put that in perspective, it’s the total size of Australia’s GDP. The biggest concern facing households now, is how to save for retirement when it’s difficult for them to clear the mountain of debt they have already accumulated.

SAVE $$$ on TAX For businesses, good accounting records of income and expenditure is imperative in minimising the amount of tax payable. For individuals, no one wants to pay the tax man any more tax than they have too. The most simple and effective way to ensure that you maximise your tax refund is to know what deductions you are entitled to claim. You should make an appointment with your accountant to discuss and understand what you can and cannot claim for your specific field of work. That way, they can give you advice on the work related deductions that can be claimed to maximise your refund. For example: travel expenses; uniforms; courses and other items may apply to you.
Our experience enables us to provide tailored solutions for your individual and business accounting and taxation needs. For new clients, we encourage you to come in or phone us. Call Rekenen Accountants on 4786 2200 for an appointment to discuss as to how we can assist you. For our existing clients, we thank you for your business and our continued relationship.
Every receipt matters, even a $2 donation can be claimed. Maintain a good filing system will make it easier for you at tax time. Keep all of your records up to date, such as log books or telephone logs, these can increase your tax deductions if you are eligible. Informing your accountant about everything is also a helpful way to ensure you are getting the best refund possible, as you may not realise you are entitled to a deduction.
For more information about how to get the most from your tax return contact Rekenen Accountants. www.rekenen.com.au
Lodging your tax return on time will also reduce the risk of getting late lodgement penalties and interest charges. There is no reason to pay the Australia Taxation Office money for something that you could have avoided. By using a tax agent you are exhausting all possible avenues for a greater return.

These qualities, together with APW’s long standing presence in the local business community, provide clients with confidence that their personal, financial and business goals will be met.
With almost four decades of experience in the industry, Steve is a Director and Principle of APW. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and combines his extensive experience and expertise in business, taxation, corporate affairs and finance with specialist property knowledge. In particular, Steve focuses on asset protection, ensuring clients have the ‘right’ structure for their business, at all stages of development and growth. Steve maintains that there are many questions that should be considered when establishing a business structure. It’s important to understand: • • • •
Your potential personal liability. Asset protection. The tax you’re liable to pay. Ongoing costs.
To setup a new business structure, or have your current structure reviewed, please call and make an appointment with Steve today.
A Director and Senior Partner of APW, Christene has been living and working in the area for the past twenty years. Christene is a FCPA, having obtained fellowship with CPA Australia last year. Whilst Christene delivers a wide range of experience and knowledge in all areas of business, one of her areas of specialisation is superannuation. Christene believes that, as we spend a lifetime working hard, with the dream of being able to retire early and enjoy our golden years, having the ‘right’ superannuation strategy is the key to confidence and security. This may involve having a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund or being a member of a Retail or Industry Superannuation Fund. At APW, our team work closely with clients and their trusted advisors, to deliver a superannuation strategy that is best suited to each individual. There are many questions to consider. For example, you should consider: • • • •
What are your maximum super contribution caps? Do you know the current rules for accessing your super? Is a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) right for you? Are you considering a Transition to Retirement?
To discuss your superannuation, please call Christene today. Don’t leave these important issues for another day.
At APW, our people are our greatest assets......let us make them yours! Our friendly and professional staff welcome the opportunity to work with you to maximise your bottom line, and minimize your tax liability. EXPERIENCE THE SYNERGY DIFFERENCE TODAY
GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL
SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS
Make a difference, become a volunteer I HAVE JUST VOLUNTEERED TO BECOME A WILDLIFE CARER WITH FAUNA RESCUE WHITSUNDAYS AND LAST WEEK I WAS GIVEN A BABY WALLABY TO FOSTER. MARCEL, AN AGILE WALLABY, WEIGHS 1 KG AND CAME TO ME REQUIRING SIX FEEDS A DAY, WHICH MEANT A NIGHT TIME FEED. AS HE NEEDS FEEDING EVERY FOUR HOURS HE ALSO HAS TO COME TO WORK WITH ME, WHICH HAS THE ADDED BONUS OF GIVING THE SYNERGY TEAM A CUTE BABY ANIMAL FIX WHILE WORKING AND SO IMPROVING STAFF MORAL. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and there are many organisations that rely on volunteers to provide the many and varied services that they deliver. Emily, one of the accountants in our office, has been volunteering for the RSPCA and she has been giving up two Saturdays a month to work at the RSPCA, walking the dogs which need to be exercised twice a day, every day. There are many ways to volunteer. If you cannot commit the time to foster one of our many native animals, you can make pouches for the baby wallaby’s and kangaroo’s to live in until they are ready for release or foster a dog for the weekend for the RSPCA to give it a much needed break from living in a cage. Many of our charitable organisations are Public Benevolent Funds and these organisations have to have a board made up of a majority of responsible persons. Responsible persons are individuals that have a degree of responsibility to the community as a whole, such as doctors, nurses, teachers, accountants, solicitors, bank officers. So another opportunity to help is to volunteer to be a responsible person for one of these organisations. I have just volunteered to be a responsible person on the board of Fauna Rescue Whitsundays which requires me to attend two board meetings per year and organise to make some payments on behalf of the organisation during the year as well as a few phone conferences. I have also volunteered to speak at schools to help educate our children about preserving our native animals, so if you like public speaking there may be many organisations that could use your skills in a similar manner. An added bonus of volunteering and making donations to registered charities is getting a tax deduction and many people are unaware that if you make a donation of say dog food to the RSPCA you can claim a deduction for it on your tax return, providing you keep the receipt of course. The rule is that the property has to be gifted to the Deductible Gift Recipient (organisation that is a DGR) e.g. a volunteer makes pouches for baby kangaroos, if she gives them to carers it is not deductible, however if she gives them to the organisation and they then give them to the carers it is deductible. If you made one or more donations of $2 or more to bucket collections conducted by an approved organisation for bushfire and flood victims, you can claim a tax deduction equal to your contribution without a receipt provided the contribution does not exceed $10.
At Synergy, we are able to plan for any self-managed superannuation fund, from start up to providing pensions. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. DO YOU BUDGET FOR YOUR MARKETING? MARKETING AFFECTS ALL AREAS OF YOUR BUSINESS. ALTHOUGH IT IS OFTEN ONE OF THE FIRST TO GET ‘THE CHOP’ WHEN TIMES ARE LEAN, REDUCING YOUR BUDGET IN THIS AREA WHEN SALES ARE DOWN CAN MAKE THE PROBLEM EVEN WORSE. Interestingly, as I get to know my clients, one of the questions I will ask is ‘What is your marketing budget?’. This is usually (not always!) met by ‘Um, we don’t really have one’. If you aren’t sure about what your marketing budget is, you are susceptible to making impulse purchases which may not generate results. We all get attracted to those shiny offers promising amazing returns from advertisers. However if it doesn’t fit with your brand values, you risk making a decision which may not provide you with the return on investment you expect, especially if you don’t have a dedicated goal to aim for! So here is a starting point for you to work out what your marketing budget is. Total the amount of money you have spent in the past year on getting your message to the market. Have you taken an advert in the local phone book? Did you spend money on getting envelopes printed with your logo on there? Did you create a Facebook page for your business that you or someone in your
30 www.corelife.com.au
organisation manages? (Think of the cost in terms of their wages/time to do so.) What about trade shows and industry events? These events are an opportunity for you to promote your brand, even if only through meeting new contacts for the first time, and are therefore ‘marketing’. Don’t forget about the memberships you have within industry organisations as well as other subscription expenses. All of these are ‘marketing’, as such, so add them up and start from there. Once you have done this, consider your annual business cycle. Look at the traditionally quieter periods. Consider the time taken for the customer to make a decision from initial contact to purchase. If the customer decision process takes 6 weeks, and March is traditionally quiet, start planning for a campaign to kick off mid Jan to ensure income is coming through the door in March. Most importantly, before you start, pick a goal! Make sure you have a benchmark in your mind as to what would deem this activity to be a success. Whether it is 3 sales, 5 enquiries, or income enough to cover the cost of the advert placed, be clear about what you want to get out of the campaign, so you can be clear about its overall success. For assistance with your marketing strategy and budget, contact Tolita from 8 Seconds. 0488 117 728 or visit 8seconds.com.au
HOW FINANCIALLY FIT ARE YOU? HOW IS YOUR FINANCIAL FITNESS?
WE ALL STRIVE TO IMPROVE OUR FITNESS, OUR RELATIONSHIPS, OUR ASSETS AND OUR KIDS BUT HOW OFTEN DO WE WORK ON IMPROVING OUR FINANCIAL SITUATION?
T RY O UR CHE CKLIST: • Have I got a good home loan and am I being smart in how to reduce it faster?
Money is one of the biggest causes of stress in the modern world and this is not confined to people on low incomes. Often medium and high income earners have concerns and sometimes this feeling of unease may be subconscious and the cause not identified.
• Do I have the right life and income protection both inside and outside my super?
Will I be able to afford to educate the kids, have a comfortable retirement or take that dream holiday? Is my super going to be enough? Do I have the right insurances in place to protect my family if I’m hurt or get ill?
• Is my super competitive and is it on track for good growth?
We had a couple approach us in 2014 as they’d identified they had questions. Over the course of 18 months we worked with them to review and improve their personal insurances, home loans and banking and super.
• Do I have a long term plan to help me make good financial decisions? IF YOU ANSWERED NO TO ANY OF THESE, COME IN AND TALK TO US.

Whilst they had all these things in place, in every area they didn’t have them structured quite right for their situation and what they wanted to achieve. On top of the structural advice, by shopping around various banks and insurers we were also able to source better products for them, cheaper premiums, lower fees and better returns. The other benefit for these clients is that we’ve mapped out and projected their financial future. Every financial decision they make is now easier as it’s part of an overall plan. This means they can focus on other areas of their life knowing their financial future is on track and they’re progressing towards their goals. If you’d like to improve your financial fitness, book an initial interview with a financial planner. Just like Bootcamp with a PT, your first session is usually free so you can see if you’re compatible.

USING TECHNOLOGY TO SAVE YOU MONEY Automate your savings Want to make sure you save? Select an amount out of every paycheck and automate it. Online banking makes this easy and efficient for you. If you put as little as $100 a week aside you could have over $5000 in savings by the end of one year. Another tip is to set a regular online transfer to your electricity account, that way, at the end of the quarter you won’t have a bill, you might even find you have some credit! Tip: Make sure the transfers are set-up for the same day as your paycheck goes in, that way you know what you have left to spend in your bank account.

Coastal Living - love where you live It’s a great time to buy here in Mackay! Who will get the most out of the current buyers’ market? 1. FIRST HOME BUYERS. It is much more affordable now to get onto the property ladder with the lowest house prices Mackay has possibly seen in the last decade. For first home buyers your home loan repayment could be more affordable than paying rent. 2. UPGRADERS. If you bought a house in recent years with plans to renovate and improve down the track based on your loan affordability at the time don’t be disheartened by the drop in market prices. Even if you sold your house now for a lower sale price than your purchase, there is a plethora of houses you can now choose from in the same market. These houses are likely to already have the improvements you dreamt about. What you lose in the sale of your own property you gain on your new purchase. 3. INVESTORS. If you enjoy hunting out the bargains and are willing to sit on an investment, this is a lucrative market for you. If you can get it cheap enough the property would pay its way and be a great long term investment. 4. RENOVATORS. This market is a renovator’s dream. With a little hard work and a bit of business savvy you can buy a cheap house, renovate then sell it on to make a quick profit. Alternatively, you could hold onto the house and rent it out using the equity for other investments.

To automate your shopping, install a few apps that will find better deals on things you’re already buying. There’s a whole category of apps that will scout out better prices on items you’re planning to buy. This way of shopping also saves you time as you don’t need to spend endless hours browsing and price checking. You can also use price comparison sites for your insurance, holidays etc.
Be savvy when you shop online Apps aren’t the only way to cut costs while you shop. Browser extensions like add-ons to your favorite Internet tool can search for better deals when you shop online. They work quietly behind the scenes and appear only if they have something relevant to share, one of the best is called InvisibleHand.
Get loyalty points without cramming your purse full of cards Loyalty cards to your favourite retail outlets can give you great discounts but if you are a member of too many they can easily clutter your purse or wallet. New apps allow you to load the different loyalty cards digitally onto your phone. MACKAY OFFICE
Celebrating
The Bluewater Trail, Mackay’s City Centre upgrade, the Port of Airlie and Abell Point Marina. What do they all have in common? They are all among the greatest constructed assets of the Mackay and Whitsunday region, also they were all projects of RPS. When we drop a fishing line from the Bluewater Trail into the Pioneer River or pose for wedding photos at sunset by Abell Point Marina’s striking rock wall, we don’t tend to think of the ‘how.’ How did these fantastic assets come to be? The how is looked after by the teams from RPS in both Mackay and the Whitsundays. They provide services relating to land, its development and use, through town planners, surveyors and landscape design. They take care of the ‘how’ for their clients to ensure that great projects can happen. The Mackay and Whitsunday teams started as a
20 YEARS IN BUSINESS local business 20 years ago and have gone from strength to strength, joining the international RPS organisation in 2009. Whitsundays Manager, Scott Reid, explains how the experience of the local teams enables RPS to offer versatility to their clients. “One of our best assets is that we are versatile and able to apply ourselves to any project to find the right solution for our client. That versatility is due to the depth of experience we have locally as well as throughout Queensland. Many of our team members have worked with us for 10 years or more, giving us great knowledge of local developments.” “Our longevity in the local area has allowed us to build key relationships with local engineers as well as with council. We’ve held these relationships due to delivering a supreme quality of work,” Scott said. While RPS provide consultation to large clients, it also prides itself

on delivering professional services to all clients; large and small, individuals and corporations. Mackay Manager, Paul Jackson, explains how their services are varied across many sectors, including mining and land development. “Our local team consists of surveyors, town planners and a landscape architect, however through our Queensland network, we can source experienced urban designers, environmental scientists and aerial mapping resources.” “RPS provided landscape design for the Mackay City Centre in conjunction with the project design team. What you see in Mackay’s CBD today is credit to that team and our designers. Mining is also a large part of what we do locally. At Caval Ridge, near Moranbah, we mobilised a team of surveyors to assist Bechtel with the auditing and review of the construction phase of the mine. It started with a team of two and peaked at six surveyors on a roster. It was a very interesting project for our team on the ground and gave them some different work experience,” Paul said. “In Airlie, the Port of Airlie development has been a key project for RPS over the past decade. We have been involved in this development from the
start, helping with all aspects of town planning, surveying, titling, and construction, as well as landscape architecture. Our team have also worked with local contractors to fine tune machine guidance data for civil construction projects, saving time and cost through the use of technology.” “Another key project for our Whitsunday team was the Whitsunday Aviation Village Estate. We provided a solution to the complex community titling of the project, a unique development in Australia which is an integrated airport, residential and commercial estate. We also completed all the construction surveying and machine guidance expertise. We have kept up with the latest technology and are always looking to improve our level of service and quality of the information and reports that we provide,” Scott said. With experienced staff, who specialise in providing outside-of-the-box solutions and a streamlined process to guarantee quality and efficiency, RPS are looking forward to the next pioneering projects to shape the future living and development of our communities.

LEAVING A LEGACY
EVERYONE HAS A UNIQUE STORY TO TELL. One of the best parts of being a journalist, is meeting an incredible cross-section of talented individuals throughout our community. Everyone has a unique story to tell. At Core Life, we’re excited to be able to share tales of triumph with the community. The best part of our day is hearing the excitement in someone’s voice as they exclaim, “I know that person,” as they turn the page.
38 www.corelife.com.au
We know we’ve done that person’s story justice when we then hear, “Wow, I didn’t know that about them!” In this edition, we share the lives of our Men in Industry. From doctor’s to mechanics, pioneering entrepreneurs and lawyers. These are the men that make up our community and these are the men who make it great. It’s not always easy. Men have significantly more pressure placed upon them to bring in the majority of the household income, even when a couple has idiosyncratic careers.
Men in Industry
On top of pressure from their work, modern men are spending significantly more time interacting with their children now than they did two generations ago. This positive trend shows that men want to have family lives in addition to succeeding at work. They often have a delicate balancing act of juggling career responsibilities with family time, but men are less likely to discuss it.
In a time where women still crave and fight for equality, it’s time the same courtesy was given to men. Work-life balance and
other workplace dilemmas involving family shouldn’t be labelled as “women’s issues.” They are family issues. Children with active fathers are happier and healthier and have higher aspirations, and we applaud the men in our community making an effort to become more engaged with their children. Some men succeed by what they know, some by what they do and a few by who they are. What will your legacy be?

Inspiring and empowering motivated business owners to achieve their full potential in both business and life. This is the powerful mission behind local, recently-launched business, Achieve Business Dynamics (ABD). For founder and managing director, Paul Burke, it is the culmination of a rewarding career as an accountant. A long-term local, Paul has been living in the Whitsundays with his family for more than 20 years. He and his beautiful wife, Jenny, have recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. They have four terrific and incredibly supportive children – Simon, Cameron, Justin and Danielle. “We’ve really enjoyed living and seeing our family grow up in this incredibly beautiful area.” Paul said. Paul was a partner in a leading local accounting firm for 18 years. This allowed him to gain great insight into the local and regional business community and the challenges it faces. It also gave him the opportunity to assist clients to improve their businesses, which in turn helped them to achieve their goals. He developed a real passion for this, resulting in the creation of ABD. To make this possible, Paul became qualified as a business coach with a leading international coaching organisation and attended coaching training and seminars in America to gain valuable advisory knowledge and skills. The friendly ABD team offers simple and affordable planning and coaching services focusing on client growth or, in the current challenging economy, sustainability. “We believe that achieving your business and personal goals generally means doing things differently. We support our clients in completing the things they need to do differently to get them to where they really want to be,” Paul explains. “Our business operates around several core values including family first. We make it a priority to schedule quality time with our families. Jenny and I enjoy spending time together taking in the beauty of our amazing area, walking and riding around it and photographing it.” “I’m a huge cricket fan and also follow the NRL including State of Origin. I’m originally from New South Wales. Go the Blues!”

Dr. John McIntosh GP SUPERCLINIC GROUP
With a creative curiosity for fixing things, becoming a doctor was a natural progression for Dr. John McIntosh, but he hasn’t stopped at only fixing people. “Part of helping people to get better is dependent on the services we can offer and I began to see gaps in the medical system itself.” “I have worked at changing after care systems in Mackay, offering the Minister of Health solutions to the vaccination and chronic disease management issues we previously faced. I am happy to say my suggestions were instituted. Currently I am offering solutions for the Black Lung situation, with the failure of the Coal Workers Health Scheme to protect all concerned. I hope my suggestions are implemented to provide our community with support and boost our regional economy,” Dr. McIntosh said. He is the creator of the GP Superclinic Group with clinics located in Rural View, Marian, Walkerston and Hay Point. The newest addition to the group is City Superclinic Mackay, opposite CQ University.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
City Superclinic brings Mackay next-level technology in the fields of occupational health and high-performance sports medicine and rehabilitation. “I am excited to be able to bring global organisation, Bcerta, to Mackay. Bcerta provides unique, cloud-based occupational health services with the ability to provide medicals for companies anywhere in the world. It is led locally by the experienced health physician, Assoc. Prof. John Schneider. “We are also excited to present a high-level rapid rehabilitation service with a highperformance gym equivalent to that of the Australian Institute of Sport. Dr. Ray Shah is a sports medicine doctor who has worked with Olympic athletes and professional sports teams to maximise performance and minimise recovery time. This is also beneficial to workplace rehabilitation,” Dr. McIntosh said. When it comes to men visiting the doctor and taking care of their health, Dr. McIntosh advises that more should be done. “Men need to value themselves like the multi-million dollar machine they are! If they were given a car or boat worth several million dollars they would clean it, service it, protect it and insure it. “If men started to really value themselves, and, dare I say “love themselves”, they would keep their pistons pumping and get serviced more regularly!” For relaxation and adventure, Dr. McIntosh likes to set his sights on the horizon. After being moored in Bali for the past eight years, he sailed his boat back to Mackay through monsoonal conditions and a near cyclone off the Darwin Coast. This was after he and wife, Elizabeth, spent months living in France, on a canal boat, exploring historic villages along the way. “For as long as we are physically able, we will continue to sail around the world in search of new horizons to explore interesting places,” he said. Make City Superclinic your clinic. With a same-day appointment promise, they’ll fit you in, no worries. www.corelife.com.au 41

Paul Murphy IRRIGEAR WHITSUNDAYS
Have a yarn with almost any local in the Whitsundays and you’ll discover that, more often than not, the beauty of the coastline drew them in and the warm Whitsunday way of life kept them here. For Paul Murphy, it was a picture of Airlie Beach on the front of a travel guide that made him set his sights on the Whitsundays to learn how to dive, although it wasn’t your typical day in paradise when he arrived. “I grew up near Mildura in northwest Victoria, where it gets about 10 inches of rain per year. On the weekend I arrived in Airlie it was teeming down with more than 24 inches in just that weekend. I’d never seen anything like it,” he said. Paul started his career in horticulture by working on his parents vineyard in Victoria. He did an apprenticeship based around table grape and wine production. After his parents sold the property, Paul worked in landscaping where he discovered he had mowre of a green thumb than he thought. He spent time working in the Northern Territory and had a desire to learn how to dive, so with the inspiration from his trusty travel guide, he set his sights on Airlie Beach, a decision he says is the best one he’s ever made. “I arrived in 1993 and began working for Paul and Andrea Deering, to assist with their indoor plant hire business. Over that time we landscaped and irrigated many premium resorts and numerous properties on Hamilton Island including the late Bob Oatley’s private residence and its premier resort, qualia, which took three years and more than 600,000 plants. “23 years later and the rest is history. “Irrigation was a natural progression for the business, so the Deering’s became the local Irrigear suppliers for the Whitsundays in September last year,” Paul said. Irrigear provides complete service and support in areas of irrigation, pumping and water management. The business moved into a new showroom and workshop on Carlo Drive, managed by Paul Murphy. “Ordering, invoicing and general customer service are all part of my day at Irrigear. “Being part of the Irrigear group has helped the business a great deal. Since rebranding we have been able to expand our list of suppliers significantly, from generators to high tech water tank monitoring that previously we wouldn’t have had access to,” Paul said. Irrigear Whitsundays are also local Husqvarna suppliers, selling everything from brush cutters to mowers. Trusted brands and local knowledge, Irrigear Whitsundays are your pumping, irrigation and water management specialists.

Tim Perkins WHITPRO
Need your nuts removed? Want to detach a limb or two? Or is the best solution - complete removal? Whilst sliding down a coconut Palm Tim discusses the “highs” and “lows” of the tree lopping side of his business. “Tree selection and placement are often overlooked at planting stage and the consequence is often tree death and it’s an expensive exercise, not only for the tree but also for your back pocket!” Tims childhood was spent in country Victoria on a 5,500 farm where his love for horticulture was born. In his early twenties his desire to move to a warmer climate had him travel the coast for three months in search of the ideal place to call home and he found the tropical Whitsundays. Eleven years on, Tims business has expanded to include a multitude of services, employing over a dozen staff with decades of combined local knowledge and qualifications for a broad range of services including tree lopping, earth moving, water delivery, landscaping and the recent acquisition of his garden supply yard behind the Butterfly Effect on Shute Harbour Rd. Tims message is that when contemplating planting a tree, investigate! What type of tree should I plant? What purpose will the tree serve? Are there overhead power lines or underground utilities to be considered? How big will the tree grow? Will the roots damage the lawn or lift a path or driveway? With the right selection and when planted with thought, trees have a multitude of positives including providing shade and privacy, beauty and food, windbreaks and oxygen! So Tim says, “Plant lots of trees! They are great for the beauty and health of our wonderful Whitsunday area. Just remember, planting the wrong tree causes more tree deaths than all insect and disease related tree deaths combined! So come in and talk to Irene from Butterfly Effect about your garden and then nosey on over to Whitpro, we are always here to assist in the planning and planting of your landscape.”

Chris Pannan FOUNDER - MASSAGE ME NOW
If you’ve met Chris Pannan you would have noticed his intense energy! As owner of In House Massage he’s been working as a therapist in the Whitsundays servicing the resort industry and locals with his mobile massage service for the last 5 years. BUT while we’ve all been sleeping after a hard days work not this guy... he’s been building a revolution! Chris Pannan’s family has been based in the Whitsundays for over 20 years, through operating their family owned Bush Village Resort (sold 2012) and his work with Club Crocodile Holdings he honed his sales and marketing skills, but it wasn’t until the birth of his first son Jett 10 years ago that Chris was motivated to leave the hospitality industry and become a professional therapist. With his marketing background his new business was a success from day 1. One of his earliest adventures in technology was getting his imobilemassage website to rank no 1 in Brisbane for mobile massage - ironically while he was still studying natural therapies. Though there was always a constant frustration for him running a one man show, he needed a PA in his pocket, he wanted automated marketing and he certainly didn’t want to throw any more cash at conventional phone book advertising. In a moment Chris calls an ‘epiphany’ while at a Tony Robbins event in Fiji in 2012 the concept of helping every natural therapist automate their marketing processes was born. The Massage Me Now app is designed to link massage lovers to massage providers by making it easy to search, book and review therapists in your local area using gps technology and social media integration. The 4 year journey from initial idea to being market ready has been full of adventures and road blocks, “I’ve been out of my comfort zone and had to build my entrepreneurial muscle to deal with the ups and downs of creating a tech start up - I suppose if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Our first release to market is a what’s known in the app industry is a skateboard and the technology just keeps evolving.” While the business model is huge it’s refreshing to meet an entrepreneur that’s not motivated by the money. Chris passionately declares “I believe with the increasing ageing population and the pressure of life’s challenges that natural therapies and accessibility must be provided to humanity. I see health, education and the power of technology combined as an incredible platform to deliver a revolution.” At the time of writing his app ‘Massage Me Now’ has just gone live in the Apple Store with Android in development. He’s just relocated to Brisbane to begin the launch of his dream, starting with an invitation to showcase his app at the Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit. 46 www.corelife.com.au PHOTOGRAPHY BY: RUSS BENNING

Diversification has proven itself to be key in business survival during the mining downturn. In Michael Melville’s case, it was his diversified study options during university and specialist career path which has seen him triumph through tough times. Mick’s career in mining began 11 years ago as an underground mine geologist in the Bowen Basin. He transitioned into a geotechnical engineering role before making the decision to go into business for himself in 2012. “My wife, Amanda, and I had just had our first child so I saw going into business as an opportunity to increase work flexibility, satisfy an entrepreneurial drive and potentially increase time at home” Mick said. Geotechnicoal is Mick’s business; providing mining consultancy specialising in underground coal mine geotechnics and project management in the geotechnical and geological fields. Despite going into business only shortly before the mining downturn, Mick explains how being a small company has worked to his advantage. “My core business is providing support to underground mine geotechnicians or filling site based geotechnical roles. It is a niche type of work because it requires a specialised degree, a reasonable amount of experience in the field and a willingness to work remotely. “It is a small industry so maintaining a high standard of work and a good rapport with other industry professionals is paramount,” he said. I have made some lifelong friends and mentors during my time in mining and have especially enjoyed being part of the Bowen Basin Underground Geotechnical Society. It was during the downturn we made the decision to diversify the business, and meet an identified need in the industry. “Site geotechnical personnel spend hours per week entering strata monitoring data into whatever programs or spreadsheets they have at their disposal. I saw an opportunity to improve the efficiency at which this data is entered and also the ability to better use this data for input into geotechnical design. “Out of this came Strata Monitoring Application (SMA) which took 2 years of development and was released in 2015. Out of the 11 underground mines in the Bowen Basin, seven use the software now with number eight about to come on board. The feedback we get from sites is very positive, and there are many potential avenues for further development and partnership throughout the Bowen Basin and beyond,” Mick said. Whilst Mick typically works away, he does get regular time with his family and appreciated the wonderful lifestyle they have in the Whitsundays. “As a family we love exploring; usually bike riding, bushwalking, kayaking or day trips to the various beaches in the area. We like to get the kids involved in local events for charity. We will be doing the Million Paws walk in May, it will be our 5-year-old’s fifth time coming on the walk with us,” he said. With the potential for Mick’s SMA to be utilised in mines across Australia, it’s exciting to know that great innovation is being pioneered locally; out of the toughest times rise the greatest triumphs.

Think that Allure Laser and Skin Studio is only for the ladies? Think again! One of the most advanced lasers for aesthetic procedures has just arrived in Mackay and is exclusively available at Allure Laser and Skin Studio. The Spectra XT is a stroke of genius in that it can be used for a variety of applications. One of the key functions is tattoo removal. The laser energy utilises four wavelengths to shatter the ink particles into smaller fragments, which the body can then effectively remove. It works on all coloured tattoos, is less painful than older-model tattoo removal lasers and reduces scarring. Spectra XT is also an effective rejuvenation tool with the ability to lessen the appearance of large pores and wrinkles. It’s effective and what’s more it is simply a lunch-time procedure with no down-time. More and more men are taking charge of their appearance. Allure can assist with laser rejuvenation, botox and fillers, skincare advice and laser hair removal; just to name a few. Importantly, new patients are welcomed and made to feel at ease, with experienced health practitioners available to answer any questions. Dr. Hogben and his wife, Gillian, are the owners of Allure Laser and Skin Studio and are excited at the new range of services they are able to provide with the Spectra XT. “There’s not a lot this laser can’t do. It removes tattoos, rejuvenates the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and pores and can even treat nail fungus.” “Not only does it remove the pigment effectively from tattoos, it also works brilliantly with natural skin pigmentation, such as freckles, post-acne redness and melasma.” “We also have another laser which is dedicated purely to hair removal. Many of our clients come to us because they are frustrated with the return of hair growth after IPL. Our laser technology targets and destroys hair cells responsible for hair growth without harming the surrounding skin. It is a simple approach to permanent hair reduction that’s fast and effective,” Richard said. Look and feel your best with Allure’s complete range of treatments. Options are available to assist with sweat reduction, fat loss and anti-ageing injections. Put your best self forward to discover your full potential, with Allure Laser and Skin Studio.

Dr Prashant Kulkarni SMILE MAKERS WHITSUNDAYS
No longer should you fear a trip to the dentist. No, really! As Dr. Prashant Kulkarni from Smile Makers Whitsundays explains, advancement in dental technology means it is no longer the frightful experience many of us remember from our childhood. “The trend in dentistry is to utilise advanced technology to make dentistry more efficient and comfortable for the patient. The dental experience is now much more enjoyable with the use of digital X-rays, high-tech instruments and aesthetic materials. “At Smile Makers, we even have a television on the ceiling, so the patient can relax and feel at ease while we do our work,” he said. Prashant was born in Hyderabad in south India. This area is known for its rich cultural heritage and is one of India’s main information technology hubs. He graduated from the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and travelled to Australia in 2006 as an international student. He studied graduate certificates in public health and clinical dentistry, graduating from the University of Wollongong and Melbourne University respectively. He became registered to practice dentistry in Australia in 2010 after passing his dental council exams. His career began with Queensland Health, before moving to a private practice in Bowen. “While living in Bowen, my wife, Ketaki, and I would travel to Airlie Beach regularly. We loved the area and decided we wanted to make it our home. A drive to open my own business as well as raise a family in the Whitsundays led me to open Smile Makers Whitsundays in Cannonvale,” Prashant said. With the advantage of being a new business, Prashant aims to deliver the best experience to his patients. “In an emergency we will always aim to take a patient that same day. We welcome new patients and have affordable fees, making it easier for families. We have modern equipment and make an effort to get to know a client on their first visit, to manage their oral health according to their needs,” Prashant said. He and Ketaki have recently welcomed a baby daughter into the world, Meehika, who is their 6-month-old princess. Prashant is also a member of the Whitsunday Lions and enjoys being part of a club which does charity work to help the local community. He enjoys a game of cricket, and although he is an Australian now, he still supports his favourite team, India. When wee Meehika isn’t keeping him run off his feet, he likes to relax and watch a Bollywood movie. 50 www.corelife.com.au

There’s no better place to be with a glass of Italian red in hand,” Petrit said. The influence for Sorrento’s comes from the southern Italian town of the same name. As Petrit explains, the Italian Sorrento has striking resemblances to Airlie Beach. “Airlie Beach reminded me of Sorrento; the hills and mountains close to the coastline, the marina, the beautiful view of the water. We created Sorrento to share a love of Italian food. It’s so versatile and one of my favourite cuisines. Pizzas and pastas can have so much variation; seafood, beef, vegetarian and of course the cheese. Matched with a good wine. It’s comfort food with soul,” he said.

Petrit’s passion for what he does is a great example of how work doesn’t have to feel like a chore if you love what you do. “Every day for me is Monday. I don’t really have a weekend, but it’s by choice because I love what I do. I have met the most amazing people throughout the years which has made this journey so pleasurable. “There isn’t a task at work that I won’t do. I believe we must lead by example so if there is something to be done, I do it,” he said. When he and Julie do find time to relax, they enjoy spending time exploring the local area with their children. “My kids love Hamilton Island, so it’s a place we love to visit as a family. Strolling along the walkway from Cannonvale to Sorrento’s at Abell Point Marina is simply beautiful. A constant reminder that we live in paradise.”
Dr. Juan Sabag CANNONVALE MEDICAL SERVICES
Passionate. To sum up Dr. Juan Sabag in one word is difficult. For a man with an overwhelming exuberance for medicine, although “passionate” comes close. With a zest for life, a love of travel and thirst for knowledge, Dr. Sabag is passionate about providing the best care possible for his patients. A General Practitioner for nearly 40 years, Dr. Sabag has spent his entire professional career in Australia. Born in Bolivia, he grew up in Brazil and came to Australia to practice medicine. He became a registered practitioner in Australia after completing his examinations at the University of New South Wales. He owned his own medical practice in Sydney for more than 25 years. After practicing medicine in many parts of Australia, as well as training in specialist fields overseas, Dr. Sabag fell in love with the Whitsundays and chose to strengthen our local health industry by establishing Cannonvale Medical Services. “We are proud to offer high quality medical care to the Whitsunday area across a broad spectrum of services. From general medicine to chronic disease management as well as mental health services to assist people in crisis. “We have on-site pathology, a visiting paediatrician and we have additional services nearby; including X-ray and CT scanning, as well as ultrasound down the road. The centralised medical services make it easier for our patients, as well as being open seven days per week; 365 days per year providing these essential services,” Dr. Sabag said. While his primary interest is in general medicine, Dr. Sabag has a special interest in the fields of connective tissues, musculoskeletal therapy, dermatology and skin cancer treatment. He provides a skin clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers. An area of particular interest to the Whitsunday region is Dr. Sabag’s advanced knowledge in musculoskeletal therapy, by where autologous blood or plasma is taken from a patient and reinjected into joints, scars or wrinkles; as a solution to pain relief or a cosmetic enhancement. Dr. Sabag hopes to bring this treatment to local patients within the next six months. With his South American heritage, Dr. Sabag is fluent in many languages including Spanish, Portugese and Italian. Dr. Rolf Hillmann, another GP at Cannonvale Medical Services, is fluent in German, making a very multi-lingual medical centre. Dr. Sabag enjoys watching football, but also has a love of ancient civilisations, meeting people from different cultures and enjoying the outdoors. “From my apartment I can see across the beautiful water to the islands, and I think to myself, this surely is paradise. No way can you get bored here. Bushwalking and fishing, the beauty of the Whitsundays is boundless,” he said. With bulk-billing and automatic health fund claim processing, Cannonvale Medical Services ticks all the boxes. Keep yourself in good health and enjoy a life worth living.

Grant Rogers SHEDBOSS MACKAY & WHITSUNDAYS Favourite Movie: Mad Max Favourite Food: Peppered steak Favourite Beverage: XXXX Summers Starsign: Aries Favourite Musician: Varied, from Johnny Cash to AC/DC “When you build with ShedBoss, you’re building an asset, not a liability.” Built strong. Built right. That’s the motto of ShedSafe™ accredited building business, ShedBoss. Owner and manager of ShedBoss Mackay and Whitsundays, Grant Rogers utilises his 12 years of construction experience to give all of his projects a personal, hands-on approach, to ensure a high quality finish. ShedBoss custom-build a range of structures, from domestic sheds to factories and even patios. As Grant explains, they take care of the project from start to finish. “When you build with ShedBoss you will deal directly with licensed and qualified builders and tradespeople, who will professionally manage your project from the initial quote and planning to council approval and final construction.” “We supply and construct an affordable, yet durable, product with attention to detail to present a high-quality finished product,” he said. What is the most incredible thing you have ever done? I jumped out of a perfectly good plane! Otherwise known as a skydive. Where do you like to holiday? Coolum. There’s so much to see and do, and the kids have a great time. What’s your favourite sport? When I’m not working, I enjoy kicking back watching the NRL. If you had the chance to meet anyone from any time period, who would it be? Johnathan Thurston. He wasn’t predicted to be anything special but hasn’t he shown them all!
Dr Rum (aka Mark Wyatt) FISH D’VINE Favourite Movie: The Rum Diary Starsign: Taurus Favourite Music: Drinking Rum and Coca Cola ( The Andrews sisters) Favourite Food: Rum Baba Favourite Beverage: A Rum I have not tried yet…. What’s the story? Why are you called Dr Rum? Much of my mis spent youth was developing a taste for Caribbean Rum in West Indian areas in London. Being told, when we started Australia’s original Rum Bar over a decade ago, “You’re mad mate. They’ll only drink one rum up here mate”, by our supplier, was like a red rag to a bull. We now boast the most diverse and, some say, largest rum collection in the southern hemisphere. During this time, I have been lucky enough to be asked to get involved with judging global cocktail competitions, creating rum blends, advising distillers, importers, bars and generally sticking my nose into the Worldwide Rum community. Somewhere in this chaos, “Dr Rum” stuck. It’s easier on the tongue than Rum Ambassador and a bit less snooty. Oh, and I refuse to wear a name badge with Mark on it. What’s something whacky people won’t know about you? I worked in the middle east, on an explosives vessel, with no idea about explosives or diving. While I was doing the job, a very tough looking superintendent from New York, who learnt his skills in the Vietnam war, greeted me on board. On admitting I had no clue about anything whatsoever, he remarked “You’re Insane”, and, after what can only be described as the most awkward pause in human history, he said “...You’ll fit in just fine.” What’s the biggest bucket list thing you’ve done? Rebecca Clark (AKA thefoodjunkie) and I, were flown to Whitehaven Beach for a breakfast of fine beverages and the best Cuban cigars. Then I jumped off the plane’s float with one of the most respected and liked Caribbean Rum Master distillers in the world. Jumping out of a plane is a bucket list thing, right? Even if it’s bobbing about in crystal clear water...
Scott McSwan MCKAYS SOLICITORS Favourite Movie: Star Wars – A New Hope Favourite Food: Sticky date pudding Favourite Beverage: Hot coffee on a cold day Starsign: Scorpio “There are few things more incredible than having children, being a part of their lives and contributing to their future.” From a court of law one minute to sports court the next, Scott McSwan is a hard-working legal eagle with a soft spot for his family. As one of the Principals of McKays Solicitors, Scott leads the litigation team which covers a varied range of areas; from employment issues and construction law to debt collection and issues arising from commercial agreements. Scott’s main area of focus is employment law; assisting employers and employees to understand employment contracts and enterprise agreements. He has a particular focus on employment in the coal industry, including the black coal long service leave scheme. Why did you decide to study law? My brother was already studying law and I had cousins who were already lawyers, it seemed to offer interesting diversity. Best holiday experiences? Some of the highlights for me have been night cruising on Hong Kong Harbour, New Year fireworks on Sydney Harbour when glamping on Cockatoo Island, long easy days in Phra Nang Bay, Krabi (Thailand) and watching street performers in Queenstown, New Zealand. What keeps you busy on the weekend? A mix of an early morning run, taking our children to sport events; getting to church and catching up with friends for lunch, followed by a trip nearby for a hike or swim. If you could spend time with someone famous, from any time period, who would it be? Nelson Mandela. He had the will and personal strength to improve himself and those around him, thereby changing the world. He was an amazing person. www.corelife.com.au 57
WHAT CHORES DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO EARN POCKET MONEY?
when I’m big I can get a motorbike or Lamborghini. I remember them painfully!
BRAY I do the dishes in the dishwasher. After my chores I get ready for school. I empty the dishwasher and get $10 in my bank every week. I’d rather I got cash, but I guess when I’m big I can get a motorbike or Lamborghini. Yeah, that would be cool!
Some chores are horrible but they help out my family.

KAYLEM Well, I remember them painfully! I make my bed every morning, unload the dishwasher, make mum cups of tea, help dad with the car, feed our dog, look after my lizard Rigby and help deliver Core Magazine. I get $10 a week but my mum owes me some!
I have to feed the dog and fish every day and I help my mum with the laundry. Some chores are horrible but they help out my family. I wish mum would give me some money and put some in the bank cause I don’t have any spending money left to buy anymore hot wheels car.

George Christensen Passionate about Logan's Adventure Playground
We recently caught up with George Christensen, our Federal Member for Dawson, and a Gold Sponsor of Logan’s Adventure Playground (LAP). “George, you have always been passionate about supporting community projects within your electorate. What was it about LAP that caught your attention?” I think the Logan’s Adventure Playground is a fantastic initiative by local residents and particularly local parents. To me, it just showed a willingness from the community, not just to have the facility, but to do the hard yards, to actually achieve something for local children. Everyone complains there’s nothing for kids to do. These people are actively involved with lobbying and fundraising. They’re out there finding a solution that everyone complains about (nothing for kids to do).” “You supported the project soon after its inception. Your $15,000 Gold Sponsorship really helped with the purchase of the $51,000 Tandem Flying Fox. Have you tried it out yet?” I wouldn’t like to test its weight limits so I have not tried the flying fox but I have seen it in action and it looks like lots of fun. “Playgrounds like Logan’s Adventure Playground are an integral part of strengthening community spirit and promoting outdoor play. Have you seen other communities benefit from a similar style of playground?” Yes, I have seen community playgrounds become focal points for building stronger ties in the community and I think that this one will too which is part of its appeal. Obviously, a lot more equipment needs to go into LAP in Cannonvale before we start to see it buzzing. However I think they will achieve the result they want and it will become a focal point for the Cannonvale community.

“Do you have any advice for The Play and Shine Project Group as fund raising managers of the project?”
businesses to raise their local profile and team with a great community project?”
Keep going and don’t give up. I think that it’s something the community needs. It’s something the community wants and, given that there is that desire to have this playground, it will happen. Just keep at it.
Local businesses wanting to promote themselves to local families really couldn’t find a better way to get their name in front of people. When the playground is full, with all the equipment that they need, it will also be full of young kids and onlookers – mums and dads – who will see their logo front and centre. Knowing that local business contributed to the community will be beneficial, so I would encourage the business community to get on board.
“You attended the Bowen Cup function where the Play and Shine Project Group launched the fundraising efforts for the playground. At that event $10,613.00 was raised. What were your thoughts of the function, and did you back a winning horse?” I didn’t back a winning horse that day, but fundraisers like these are what it’s all about. The group behind this project is doing all the right things and engaging people, while having a great time and raising much needed funds at the same time.
Find out how you can get involved loganthebravest@gmail.com www.logansadventureplayground.com
“From a sponsor’s perspective, can you see the benefits in supporting Logan’s Adventure Playground?” Absolutely. I mean my role as the Federal Member of Parliament is to promote things which create better communities and also the Federal Government want to promote healthy and active lifestyles, and this achieves both. “The Play and Shine Project Group are planning a major fund raising dinner for September, where they are aiming to raise $50,000. Will you be there?” My intention is to be there, and I hope to see them raise that much needed amount. “The playground is currently seeking more sponsors on all levels. Can you think of a better way for small local

FREYA THE FIRST AIDER She’s energetic, eager to help and best of all, educational. What’s more, she can help your child save lives. She’s Freya the First Aider, a character who was brought to life right here in the Whitsundays. Freya the First Aider was developed by local resident, Liam Shields. Liam has been an Emergency Response Trainer and Paramedic for more than 20 years. During a training exercise on Hamilton Island, Liam saw that the children, who were taking part in the exercise as patients, were just as confident in the concepts of basic first aid as the adults in many of the practice situations. From his experience as an emergency responder, Liam had come across unfortunate circumstances where patients may have survived if the children on the scene had basic first aid knowledge. “In one situation, I arrived at a home where an unconscious lady was left on her back and her two children were sitting beside her. Her airway had been blocked, had her kids known to roll her to her side, she may have survived. “Another example is when a teenager had been bitten by a brown snake. Rather than staying still, he rode his bike back to the house, passing neighbour’s but not mentioning to anyone what had happened. He was found collapsed not far from his house and had passed away. These circumstances are very sad, but illustrate that it’s the little things which can save a life. That’s what Freya’s message is all about,” Liam said. The book, Freya the First Aider, is a cleverly written adventure with bright and colourful illustrations. The book is entirely locally produced, from concept to print. Written by Liam and edited by Dr. David Farlow who has more than 30 years of experience in the medical field. Illustrations were created by Dan Watts, while Marie Mour was the graphic and web designer, and co-editor. Denise Brady and Lucy Caffin assisted with the 60 www.corelife.com.au
research, editing and promotions. The book was also printed locally. In each situation Freya comes across, whether it be a broken arm at the skate park or a snake bite on a grassy field, she instructs what the children should do to help their injured friend. The instructions are clear and concise, easy for children to learn and absorb. It should be the most important book in any child’s home! If your children came home and found you collapsed on the floor, would they know what to do? Would they know what to do if they were bitten by a snake or badly cut and bleeding severely? Liam explains how our local community can help to make Freya the First Aider a name in every Australian household. “Freya has the opportunity to become the next Dora the Explorer, but instead of teaching Spanish, she would be helping to save lives. Imagine a television series with Freya teaching kids the basics on first aid. “We also have plans for more books, written for different age levels and covering first aid in more detail as children advance. But we need the support of the community to help make this happen. We are also looking for business investors who would like to be a part of making Freya famous,” he said. George Christensen MP, Local Federal Member for Dawson has offered his support at a federal level with Educational Minister Simon Birmingham to get Freya introduced into schools, but to get Freya in your home, visit www.freyafirstaider.com/store/products. Buy the book, tell your friends and let’s give our children the confidence they need to save a life.

How Does Your Body Communicate? Have you ever taken a step back and thought about how amazing your body is? From the coordination of your joints and muscles to create movement to the deeper EDITORIAL PLACEMENT understanding of how our thoughts are created and processed. Do you have to concentrate for a cut to heal? Probably not, as our body would know all about it and get straight to work to try to fix things up. How about the regulation of your heart rate and blood pressure? Do you need to tell your heart to increase your heart rate when you are exercising at the gym or out running around with the kids? Probably not, as our body has the capabilities when functioning properly to detect and adapt our body to these changes to ensure that we are operating at an adequate level for the tasks at hand. So how does our body know and coordinate all these things? The answer lies in the amazing internal communication systems that we all have, whether it be a little baby or our dearest grandparents. This amazing communication system is the nervous system, which includes our brain, spinal cord and all the nerves throughout our body. It is constantly sending signals to and fro, back to the brain so that it can coordinate all the functions within your body. Like telling your heart to beat faster, or telling your body to calm down so that you can have a restful sleep, telling your digestive system to fire up and process the foods, coordinating all your nutrients and the biochemical reactions of your body and many more. So it is important that we make sure that this system, the nervous system, is functioning at its optimum. If you or your family is interested in finding out whether your body and nervous system is functioning well, contact Little Sprouts Chiropractic Mackay, and our lovely chiropractors would be happy to see if chiropractic care would benefit.

MODEL Lara LeGarde
MAKE UP ARTIST : Lauren Skippen To compliment Lara's New OmbrĂŠ short style, Lauren wanted to create a look that was trending at the moment and emphasized her amazing green eyes. Lauren chose to use an airbrush foundation to create a flawless matt finish, contouring her gorgeous cheek bones to achieve height and highlighting with a shimmer powder to attract light and give her a dewy like finish. Her eyes were framed with some Modelrock strip lashes and warm hues and light golden honey colours, and together with dark matt eyeshadow smudged into the contour and outer edges of her eyes. Creating a smokey demure look. Her lips were then finished with a neutral lip liner topped off with a warm neutral matt lipstick.

AFTER INTUITION HAIR STYLIST : Larissa Anderson Busy mother of two, Lara, was really ready for a make over as she has had these gorgeous long locks for most of her life. We wanted to create something fresh and high fashion for Lara that was easy to maintain. We decided that with Lara’s gorgeous complexion and big green eyes we would lighten her hair up and bring some brightness back into her hair. Larissa used a beautiful Ombré technique in Lara’s hair where she added slight depth to the roots and blended a soft blonde into her ends, with the help of the Schwarzkopf Professionals miracle product FIBREPLEX. Fibreplex is used in hair when lightening to achieve blonder results without compromising the condition of the hair. Ombre is a fantastic style to help Lara with her busy lifestyle and not being able to get into the salon as often. Larissa then cut 30cms of Lara’s hair off to donate for the Princess Charlotte Alopecia program Children’s Variety. Lara’s hair was then cut into a long bob with lots of layers to encourage her natural curl for low maintenance styling at home. Larissa used MR. Most necklines on women’s clothing are low. Women’s T-shirts are generally designed with a scooped or v-neck, leaving the décolletage exposed to uv damage from incidental exposure. Driving in the car. hanging out the washing and even walking the dog! Let alone enjoying the water and beaches in our beautiful region. Damage displays as freckling, catalysed hyper pigmentation and telangiectasia or “broken capillaries “. Lines appear and the dermis thins as collagen breaks down. Building a habit of uv protection is the first step toward positive change in
your skin and without it, to be honest, it’s a change that will not happen or at best, be temporary. After consultation at Sensorium we can choose a treatment program and / or a home regimen of skin care to affect positive change. IPL photo rejuvenation in combination with vitamin A based skincare and treatments can work wonders, if you can change your sun care habits. Daily sunblock application, making friends with scarves, higher necklines and saving that beautiful décolletage for special occasions!
Glancing in the mirror one morning, I noticed that my chest area was looking red and blotchy, and that broken capillaries were starting to appear. Over the coming months it got a lot worse, and I needed to cover my chest with make up everyday, before leaving the house.
before
after 1 treatment
After a consultation with Sarah from Sensorium Skin Technology, I found out that this was a result of serious sun damage over a long period of time. Sarah recommended a combination of IPL and an at home skincare regium. Only hours after my first IPL treatment, I noticed an amazing result. My skin appeared less angry and capillaries were going dark in colour. With the combination of additional IPL treatments, correct skin care and sun block, the difference was simply incredible. I just didn’t realise how aged my décolletage was looking and how easy it would be to turn back the clock. The combination of the amazing skincare range “Osmosis” with IPL photo rejuvenation treatments, not only transformed my décolletage, but also my skin overall. Sarah offers amazing packages with payment plans, making it affordable for everyone. I would highly recommend Sensorium Skin Technology and the amazing Sarah Lee Adams to anyone whose décolletage or skin is also aging ahead of time.

THOR laser, healing with light. At Peak Body Mechanics, we always strive to use the most advanced therapies to enhance our osteopathic treatments. One of these treatments, THOR laser, was featured on WIN news in February. What is Photobiomodulation also known as low level laser (LLLT)? Our Thor is a laser or LED light therapy that improves tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone, nerves), reduces inflammation and reduces pain wherever the beam is applied. Usually applied by a doctor, therapist or technician, treatments typically take 1 - 30 minutes and should be applied two or more times a week. How does it works? Photobiomodulation works predominately on a protein in mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase) to increase ATP and reduce oxidative stress. A cascade of mitochondrial and intracellular downstream effects lead to improved tissue repair and reduced inflammation. Clinical evidence: In the last 4 years, six systematic reviews have found in favour of photobiomodulation BMJ sports medicine journal, systematic review of surgical and conservative interventions for frozen shoulder found “strong evidence” for LLLT. (2010) The International Association for the Study of Pain (Global Task force on musculoskeletal pain) found “strong evidence” for Low Level Laser Therapy on myofascial pain syndrome. (2010) The BMJ clinical evidence recommendations for tennis elbow 2011 now include LLLT. American Physical Therapy Association guidelines recommend LLLT for Achilles tendonitis. (2010) Lancet systematic review: “LLLT reduces pain immediately after treatment in acute neck pain and up to 22 weeks after completion of treatment in patients with chronic neck pain”. (2009) World Health Organisation (Bone and Joint Task Force) for neck pain Low Level Laser Therapy “more effective than no treatment, sham, or alternative interventions” (2008) In August 2010, The Lancet reported that the systematic review of LLLT for neck pain was in their top 20 most downloaded papers for 2010.

Getting the right hearing solution Does it surprise you to know that there are many hearing providers that are owned by a specific manufacturer or have a preferred supplier agreement with one specific brand? Some of these providers will allow fittings of other brands should they be required, but some may not give you any other option. The problem with this is that like many other industries, different hearing aid manufacturers have unique patented features specific to their brands. Think of it like a car, if you needed to get from A to B as quickly as possible you may choose to purchase a Ferrari or a Lamborghini which are specifically designed with speed in mind. However, if you wanted to get from A to B and it involved trekking through a rough muddy track with a few shallow rivers to cross than the Ferrari and Lamborghini are no longer appropriate. You would consider
a model that was more suitable, perhaps a Prado or FJ Cruiser to get you where you needed to go. The same is true for hearing aids. I see many patients with completely different needs which cannot be accommodated for with just one specific brand. A good example is we have a patient who lives by herself who is visually impaired with poor feeling in her fingers, she is extremely independent continues to live a full and active life. However because of this she is unable to insert and change hearing aid batteries, insert and remove the hearing aids themselves and finally clean and maintain them. This pretty much rules out independent use of traditional hearing aids. However there is a product produced by just the one manufacturer called the Lyric hearing aid which is implanted into the ear and stays there for two months at a time without removing, changing
batteries and cleaning. She is able to hear 24 hours a day without worry about managing and maintaining the aids and can maintain her independence. I have another young patient with a profound hearing loss who was born with almost no external ears. This patient requires extremely high powered hearing aids, however almost all high powered hearing aids have a part which sits behind the external ear which he does not have. There is one specific brand which specializes in high powered hearing aids which sit right inside the ear canal without needing to have anything sitting behind the ear. The patient can now wear hearing aids which are not only virtually invisible but allow the patient to enjoy an active lifestyle without their hearing aids falling out regularly. Finally, we have another patient who has worked their entire

life in the sun and has lost the cartilage of his ears to skin cancer. He has also worked around heavy machinery his entire life and had lost almost all his hearing to point where hearing aids were no longer appropriate and needed a cochlear implant. Most Cochlear Implants have the speech processor sitting over the top of the ear, however in his case he has no ear for it to sit on. Thankfully there is one Cochlear implant manufacturer who produces a speech processor that just sits directly on the head without needing to wear it over the ear. These are only three examples of different patients all requiring a completely separate brand of hearing aids to suitably meet their lifestyle and hearing needs.

Macular Degeneration
No. 1 Cause of Blindness.
IT’S SERIOUS: Of all the Australians over 50 years of age, 1 in 7 already have signs of macular degeneration. That’s a serious statistic. Like cancer, all of us will know someone who is affected by vision loss that is the result of macular degeneration. The effects of macular degeneration are devastating. This is because the disease affects the central vision, so affected patients lose the ability to read, to drive, to watch TV and even to recognise faces. Once again, that’s a serious result.
SYMPTOMS: Among the first symptoms of macular degeneration is difficulty reading small print. Another symptom is shadows or distortions when looking at a special test called an Amsler Grid. This is a screening test that people can use at home to watch for any changes they are available for free from your Eyecare Plus practice. “Macular Degeneration Awareness Week” is occurring this month around Australia, so what can we really do to be more aware? The two most important things to know are that this is now the main cause of blindness in Australia; and that any vision loss is likely to be permanent once the damage has occurred.
PREVENTION: The first and most important step is to have your eyes examined and have
the macula area checked in each eye. Secondly, don’t ignore any changes in your vision as early detection can literally save your sight. Thirdly, we recommend diet and lifestyle choices that are “eye friendly”. Don’t smoke, because smoking is one of the major causes of macular degeneration. International studies have also shown the incidence of this disease can be reduced by eating a diet that is rich in anti-oxidants and Omega 3’s. Examples include dark leafy greens and fish like salmon and tuna. Another contributing factor is believed to be excessive exposure to ultra-violet light. Sunglasses should be worn outside and a broad-brimmed hat is also a good idea. Normal spectacles should always include a special clear coating that blocks UV radiation – recently the Cancer Council has endorsed a specific product for this: Crizal UV. Other international research has shown that particular diet supplements called AREDS can also help to reduce the onset and progression of macular degeneration. There are many of these to select from, but it’s important to choose one that has all of the dietary supplements included in the scientific recommendations. Many products do this, but we usually recommend MD-Eyes simply because the packaging is so good. Call in to Eyecare Plus to receive a free booklet summarising our recommendations for an “eye friendly” diet and your best lifestyle options. This also includes an Amsler Grid screening test to help detect early signs of the disease and minimise your risk of macular degeneration. However, this is never a substitute for having regular complete eye examinations. Your sight is too important to risk losing it.

COLOUR, VIBRATIONS AND ENERGY. That pretty much sums up the daily life of local designer and entrepreneur Janelle Oldfield. Janelle is the owner/director of 7 Circles and operates an online business – www.chakrashine.com from her Cannonvale home which she shares with her partner and son. 7 Circles has developed the Chakra Shine brand - an original concept for administering long term colour therapy, the notion of which, has existed for over 2000 years. From ultraviolet to infrared, each colour in the visible light spectrum falls into a specific frequency and vibration, which many believe contribute to affecting the energy and frequencies within our bodies. The word Chakra is derived from the Hindu Sanskrit language, meaning ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’ and can be described as wheel like energy vortices, which exist in the surface of the subtle body of living beings. The first product released by 7 Circles is Chakra Shine Bed Linen. The custom made designer bed linen is available in 3 common height ranges to suit Single, Double, Queen and King Bed sizes. Predominately aimed at the healthy/natural consumer, the beautiful bed linen has caught the eye of Channel 7’s Home and Away wardrobe department and will be used on set over the coming months. Janelle is elated with the development and says, “The team at Chakra Shine are super excited that our product will be put in front of such a huge audience. To be recognised by one the biggest pop culture soap operas is really motivating, enabling us to confidently launch the next products in the range”. Keep an eye out for the Chakra Shine Yoga Mat, Beach Towel and Round Beach Towel, all of which will be available next month. The brand is trademarked in Australia, United Kingdom, United States and India, and can be found online at www.chakrashine.com.
WIN a set of Chakra Shine Bed Linen valued at $149.95 by liking Core Life Magazine Facebook page and tell us what your favourite colour is! 72 www.corelife.com.au
THE POWER OF EATING FOR YOUR
Chakra
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed. We have all reached for the chocolate when energy is running low or felt the buzz of our morning coffee when we need fuel for the day, but how can we choose good food and put it to good use in a better way? Recent studies have shown that certain types of foods have specific vibrations that correspond to the chakra points in our body. chakra points are the spinning energy centres in our body that create an even flow of energy fundamental to our health and well being. Each chakra point has a specific function and all are connected to each other. They start at the spine and travel up to the crown chakra in our head stopping at five points along the way.
Each chakra point has a different function and when your chakras are out of balance so are you. For example, the heart chakra is central and connected to your lungs, heart and circulatory system. It rules your relationships, and the way you give and receive love. Neglect of this chakra can have serious impacts on your life such as heart attacks, breast cancer and asthma. This is why it is so important to balance, clear and re-charge your chakras. This can be done through energy medicine and making food choices according to which of your chakras need a boost. The following advice will help you identify which food to eat according to which areas of your life are struggling.
FOOD FOR YOUR FIRST CHAKRA
FOOD FOR YOUR SECOND CHAKRA
FOR YOUR THIRD CHAKRA
This is the chakra that is located at the bottom of your spine. If you or someone else holds a hand there you will feel a warm energy and comfort radiate throughout your body. If this chakra is unbalanced you will feel stressed and unsafe in your body. The purpose of this chakra is to ground you so the best foods to eat are root vegetables like beets, garlic, ginger, turnips, potatoes and parsnips. Red meat is also a great source of fuel for this chakra, so are other red foods such as apples and pomegranates as this
This chakra is just above the pubic bone and it creates the energy responsible for your emotions, creativity and sexuality. To feed this chakra give it water, teas or broth, anything that will keep you hydrated. Orange foods are also good as the colour of this chakra is orange so eat carrots, oranges and drink orange juice, plus juicy fruits such as melon, mango and strawberries. For the best results fruits should always be eaten on an empty stomach.
This chakra is located in the area of the solar plexus around the navel and up to breastbone. For this chakra you are looking for slow burning food that is not absorbed too quickly such as whole grains and complex carbohydrates. Avoid processed foods, white flour and sugar. Instead, eat yellow colours such as yellow capsicum, corn, bananas, yellow curries and yellow lentils. This chakra governs your self-esteem; it transforms raw fiery energy into action.
FOOD FOR YOUR FOURTH CHAKRA
FOOD FOR YOUR FIFTH CHAKRA
FOR YOUR SIXTH AND SEVENTH CHAKRAA
With this chakra eating your greens is good advice, leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, lettuce, kale and bok choy are the way to go. With this chakra it is all about balance and in Chinese medicine green veggies are a balance between yin and yang. This chakra is located in the heart and assists in love and relationships so if your love life or connections with the people you love are a bit out of kilter it is important to eat green!
This chakra is located in your throat and its effective energy flow is important for your communication and self-expression. This chakra is replenished with blue foods such as blueberries. All fruit that grows on trees are also rewarding because they are known to be true to themselves as when they ripen and fall from the trees they are ready to be eaten. Choose apples, pears, apricots and plums if you are want to enhance your authenticity, learn how to speak your truth and find your voice. Again, for the best results eat on an empty stomach wherever possible.
These two chakras are more spiritual than physical so eating a light meal while engaging in a calming activity or experiencing a strong connection of love like a romantic dinner will replenish this chakra. So when you are low on fuel remember to eat for your chakras!
