When is enough, enough? Will it ever be? It’s only human nature to imagine yourself living a different life. A perfect life, with everything you want in it. Our expectations and focus on “bettering” our families and ourselves can be a positive thing. However, this can also lead to an unhealthy desire to want more and to forget about how lucky we are to have the things we do.
congratulations! Michael was our lucky winner and won a personalised scooter worth $4200, kindly donated by Airlie Electronics. Keep an eye out for Michael zooming around town!
I hear it all the time: I want a bigger house; I want a different job; I want a better car; I want new clothes; I want bigger boobs; I want more money; I want, I want I want! Yep, I hear it everyday and, mostly, in my own head! Have you ever stopped and asked yourself if you will ever have enough to be truly happy? Will any house, job, car, clothes, boobs or amount of money ever do the trick? I truly believe that it isn’t until we really appreciate the things we already have in our lives, and find happiness and contentment in that alone, that the desire to “want” will stop knocking on our door and blocking the way for new and exciting things to come in! I am working hard on shifting my focus from wanting more to appreciating my life just as it is. It’s not easy, but it sure feels better. Enjoy October and everything that is your life!

To my disappointment I discovered the cottage was a quick exterior construction
The problem is I’m not sure if my wife would like to live there too
It is so cool and remote, with beautiful beaches
I hardly ever watch TV so I’ve chosen a movie. I’ve always had a love for thatched roof cottages so I’ve chosen “Rosehill Cottage” in Surrey UK from the movie “The Holiday”. I recall watching the movie and then and there I decided I was booking a holiday to the UK. I googled to see where the cottage was located. To my disappointment I discovered the cottage was a quick exterior construction including the stone wall beside the cottage! Couldn’t let that stop me, so the holiday was booked and the search began to choose a thatched roof cottage in the Cotswolds, yes in winter and yes it snowed. And for those who have seen the movie, yes I did need to run around from room to room with layers of clothing on and oven turned on high with door open to keep warm. Thank goodness for mulled wine! In spite of the cold it was a lovely experience I will never forget and gladly do again, only next time I’ll look a little harder for Jude Law and stock up on more mulled wine! “Definitely the Playboy Mansion! I’m sure it was a Television Series as I happened to watch it a few times.
The home of the Thunderbirds - definitely, on Tracy Island.
Something about that home that looks amazing, very welcoming and seems to offer stunning views!!
It is so cool and remote, with beautiful beaches, not to mention the fact that almost every overhang conceals all the cool Thunderbird crafts, and has its own monorail!
I always admired the interior decor/furnishings and I’m certain it would present great comfort which is very important in any home. There is a certain sense of good times not too mention the “Entertainment” facilities available....if only those Walls could talk!!! But the problem is I’m not sure if my wife would like to live there too but I could always ask?” Geoff weeding, focus on water, airlie beach
I especially love the fact that jamming equipment keeps the location private, but I am a geek. Thunderbirds are go! tolita dukes, 8 seconds marketing

ARE YOUR BOOKS IN GOOD ORDER? Who is doing your bookkeeping? Are you struggling to do it yourself or is your partner trying to do it or maybe you have a bookkeeper who comes in once a quarter to play catch up? The point is are you getting quality information from whatever system you’re using and whoever is doing the work? The advent of cloud accounting systems mean that no one has to do themselves or make do or put up with substandard systems or reporting. Now you can outsource it while still having access to it yourself 24/7 or if you still want to do it in-house it can be checked and reviewed or analysed as often as required. This is the future of accounting and accounting systems and for business owners to remain ahead of the game they need to embrace this new technology not just for accounting but for other systems as well. Nearly all of our clients have moved to cloud accounting and are enjoying the benefits of outsourcing some or part or their accounting solutions. Some use our sister company for bookkeeping (Outsourcing Plus) and some use us to do their BAS’s and some just use us on occasion when they get busy, but they all use us to check on things as and when they want help for unusual transactions or for business planning and monitoring. This means they have access to real time accurate reporting whenever they need it for business management, banking and finance, making capital decisions or cash flow management.

Quality training
A common misconception is that training is only for rookies, yet the value of upskilling your workforce is greatly underrated.
Ian Harrison
At Quality Training Group, we can keep your team up to date with current trends and techniques in the industry, to increase competence and accuracy. We can introduce your staff to new technology to improve efficiency, as well as highlight any changes to legislation that directly relate to their work. As a result, work produced is of a higher level, there is less down time due to accidents due to a higher understanding of safety, and there is less down-time due to machinery failure, because the maintenance is of a higher standard, with a pro-active approach. Quality Training Group’s CEO, Ian Harrison, has all current competencies and qualifications, and continues to work hands-on within the mining industry, to ensure all knowledge and training advice is relevant, up-to-date and backed by years of experience. We are a nationally-accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO). As an employer, you may be eligible for a start-up subsidy of $2,500 after six months, and a further $2,500 at the completion of the course. Individual training subsidies may also be available for the employee to assist with training costs. Other tax incentives may also apply, so without cost as a barrier to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of your workforce, there’s nothing stopping your business from reaching new levels of productivity. All training is conducted on-site where possible, to ensure your employees are being coached on relevant machinery. We conduct the training when it suits you, morning, afternoon or evening. This is real training, with real outcomes, teaching real-life skills and competencies. We use comprehensive assessment methods to ensure all trainees are confident on all machinery that they will be operating on, once entering the workforce. Quality Training group – we put the quality back in training to produce quality tradespeople.

Superannuation, changes and traps
don’t get caught out
Most businesses are aware that from 1 July 2014, the Superannuation Guarantee payable to employees’ super funds, increased from 9.25% to 9.5%. However, there are many who do not realise that superannuation is sometimes also payable with respect to contractors, not just employees. Superannuation is payable by all employers:• Regardless of the size of the business; • For all employees, and • For any contractors if:
- the contract is with a person (as opposed to a company, trust or partnership); and - the contract is principally for labour.
The contracting industry is riddled with businesses treating workers who are really employees as “contractors”. Much of the time this is at the request of the worker, as they prefer the higher “grossed up rate” with all allowances and superannuation built in. In the last couple of years this has led to many contractors paying a huge price. Sometimes this has been as a result of action taken by the ATO. Other times it has been as a result of the Fair Work Ombudsman conducting an audit of the business when a former “contractor” made a complaint that they were really an employee and “never paid super”.
Emma Lanigan, Solicitor
If you fail to meet your superannuation obligations as an employer, you should immediately seek advice to find out exactly what the consequences might be. So don’t get caught out. Make sure that you are paying employees and any relevant contractors, the correct superannuation contribution from 1 July 2014.

your business’s credibility through a variety of mediums when congratulating you on your winning effort.
Look at it like this. If you are comparing two products, and in your eyes as the consumer there are no stand out differences, the one with the award will usually influence your choice. An award identifies this product as being endorsed by an external body to the brand itself, and more often than not, one with the authority to do so.
Awards also enable a business to take a good look at all aspects of the operation, from safety manuals to customer service, often leaving no stone unturned. This helps identify areas of the business which could be improved, and there is always room for improvement.
Entering awards can be a little like social media, the thought of it can instantly create a knot in your stomach. However, there are many different awards out there that you can enter, without having to commit several years of your life to complete the submission. Websites such as Awardshub.com is a great place to start. If you aren’t sure if there is even an award category out there that you can enter in, you would be surprised! There is even a Home Based Business Award for those mumpreneurs and start-ups kicking off from the kitchen bench! The benefits of entering (and winning) awards are not only very tangible in the eyes of your clients, it also raises your business profile and increases

Chances are, if you were watching television, or went to the movies in 2004, you would have seen the beaming smile of Sally Howard.
“Marcus won ‘Recruiter of the Year’ in his previous role in 2011 and 2012, and I was nominated for Australian Institute of Managements, Manager of the Year in 2010. We understand the local market, which is why we are passionate about what we do,” Sally said.
Sally worked for Fone Zone for 10 years and successfully auditioned to become a ‘Face of Fone Zone’, a national advertising campaign on television and in Birch Carroll Coyle cinemas nationwide. “It was a surreal experience to go to the movies and see my face on the big screen,” Sally said. Seeking a change of direction, Sally made the move to recruitment. After nearly three years of working for two rival agencies, Toll People approached Sally to apply for the position of branch manager in her hometown of Mackay. You would struggle to find many people who are more local than Sally. She was born and raised in Mackay, as were her parents, most of her grandparents and great grandparents. Passionate about giving back to her town, Sally was recently nominated as the new Vice President of the Mackay Apex Club. “Our office is run by local people, who understand the needs of our local business community. Both myself and Marcus are born and raised in Mackay. We understand mining, we know how our clients do business and we understand Mackay, which is important in our

leap of faith
brad sobott, prd whitsundays
Life improvements happen with change, not by chance, and often this requires a leap of faith. Brad Sobott’s leap of faith was taken literally, out of an aeroplane. The day after a first date, Brad went skydiving for the first time. Already feeling exhilarated from meeting a wonderful lady the day before, his adrenaline was heightened as he free fell through the air. The instructor informed Brad there were issues with the chute and they needed to pull the emergency cord. They detached from the first chute, until finally the second chute deployed, thankfully successfully. Grasping life with both hands, the girl he had taken on a date the day before is now his wife, Noelani, and Brad believes the frightening experience was a message that he was meant to be with Noelani for life.
Photography by: iconic bride photography
Brad was born in Bunbury in Western Australia, but he lived in most states across Australia, due to his father being in the Defence Force. From his high school years onward, he lived mainly close to Sydney. He competed in ballroom dancing championships for most of his school life, and copped grief from other children, but once he got older this changed, when the other boys realised how closely he danced with girls in gorgeous outfits. His dance studio worked closely with the producers of the hit movie Strictly Ballroom, and he auditioned for the lead role. “I was no match for Paul Mercurio and did not quite look the age, so I had a small part as an extra in the movie instead. “It was an amazing three week experience in the filming studio and the highlight was walking down
the red carpet at the premier in Sydney for the first viewing,” Brad said. Brad and Noelani honeymooned on Hayman Island and fell in love with the Whitsundays. When an opportunity to work for PRD Whitsundays presented itself, Brad was optimistic for the opportunity. “Part of my decision to move to Airlie was the amount of skill and professionalism that I could see the PRD office had. I’m a great believer of surrounding yourself with successful, skilled and like-minded people, who strive to better themselves. This was clearly the case and after five years with PRD, I look back at the decision with great relief and pride,” Brad said. He commented, “Finding or selling a home is never easy and the process is full of emotion. I think it is crucial that a client feels that nothing is too much trouble in helping them with their quest.” In today’s busy lifestyle, Brad appreciates the time he spends with Noelani and their three children. His appreciation of home and family, is what drives him to find the perfect home for those looking for their perfect lifestyle in the Whitsundays. www.corelife.com.au

It took the lives of more than 19,000 people, and left a country scarred, and in mourning. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a fearsome tsunami. As most of us watched in horror and utter disbelief, brave Australians did what they could to help Japan in its time of need. One man who was instrumental in providing disaster relief is Peter Moore. Only months after assisting with the Cyclone Yasi cleanup, Peter headed up the Pacific Assist Operation, providing global operation disaster relief for tsunami affected regions in Japan. “In cooperation with local and national companies, we carried out delivery, installations, testing, operation, servicing and maintenance, training and monitoring of emergency power generator sets to the devastated provinces of the Japanese Eastern Shore. “That was a very emotional time in an area that was wiped out by the tsunami,” Peter said. Peter is the owner of Sahara Engineering, specialising in the repair, service and maintenance of diesel, gas, wind and motion generators as well as solar, motors and pumps, desalination plants and electrical equipment. After completing university in South Australia, Peter moved to Western Australia where he gained experience in mining and oil, power suppliers, research and development for power generation as well as renewable and sustainable energies and economic development. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, there was a heightened need for security measures on national and international infrastructures for telecommunications, electronics and control systems. This led to departments implementing emergency response capabilities and critical infrastructure protection, which opened up opportunities for Peter, and led to extensive travel throughout Australia and overseas. This experience highlight’s Peter’s diversification, from homebased equipment, to power stations, mining and marine. He can assist with planning through to implementation and beyond. While his experience is vast, Peter believes it is his service that is critical to his business. “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said. Fast response times, fixing technical issues and focusing on customer satisfaction is what Sahara Engineering takes pride in. Backed by a great support network, I aim to deliver results, no matter what time day or night I’m needed,” Peter said. When he’s not working on a task to keep the region’s industry moving, Peter designs power boats and catamarans, with more than 60 vessels in his portfolio, from 30 through to 157 foot. He enjoys the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, and attends the race from start to finish, followed by New Year’s Eve celebrations in Sydney. A self-confessed V8’s addict, Peter is drawn to the electric atmosphere of the track, a far cry from the relaxing ambience of Airlie that he has called home.

Paul & Jamie-Lee Central Signs and Graphics
“We can’t be switched off, fast-forwarded or muted!” Have they got your attention? Creating impact, increasing brand awareness and capturing attention is what Jamie-Lee and Paul Minchin do best. Their business, Central Signs and Graphics, offers a fresh approach to printing and signage, offering complete solution concepts, from idea to implementation. Jamie-Lee grew up in the inland mining town of Moranbah, and from an early age knew she was destined for an art-inspired career. From pen to paint, her creativity flourished and she was awarded highly for artistic ability at high school. She moved to Brisbane to study graphics and design to heighten her skills, before returning home to Mackay, where her parents had moved from Moranbah. She stepped into a design position with a local signage business, and has been at the forefront of the trade since. She met her husband Paul, who was an underground miner, and the couple started a family, daughter Lil who is now 12, and Corbin, 3. When Jamie-Lee became pregnant with Corbin, she took time off from work, and started an at-home design business, Thirteen Design. Her insightful and creative work was popular with clients, and she increasingly received requests for signage, which she wasn’t able to do from home. In a twist of fate, a local signage business went on the market, an opportunity
Paul and Jamie-Lee didn’t want to miss. It was a daunting decision, and one the couple didn’t take lightly. Paul gave up his lucrative mining position to work full time in the business, and is primarily responsible for the installation of their signage. Laughing, Jamie-Lee commented, “It’s a great partnership. Paul supplies the brawn, and I bring the brains.” Balancing family and business has been a big part of Jamie-Lee and Paul’s success. “Paul has been my rock, and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without him, so that support and teamwork has been crucial. “The biggest concept I have learned is to let go. I had to come to the realisation that I can’t do everything, so delegation has become essential. “We work hard to deliver the best result for all of our customers. Competition is tough, so the way we stand out is to deliver the best product every time. We have three graphic designers, and three highly experienced sign-writers with many years of experience, so the deliverance of quality is key for us,” Jamie-Lee said. One area you can confidently ask Tim Perkins about, is landscaping and lawn maintenance. He is outstanding in his field…check out his lawn, which he proclaims to be the greenest in his street. Whitpro employs a team with more than 90 years of experience in gardening, horticulture, agriculture, landscaping and tree lopping. It has a specialist landscaper, and the most highly qualified arborist in the Whitsundays. Using zero-turn mowers with catchers, a professional and eye-catching job is guaranteed. Tree-lopping and large clean-up projects are its specialty, as well as transforming overgrown gardens into beautiful spaces. Tim grew up in country Victoria, on a 5500 acre farm, where his passion for horticulture was born. Riding motorbikes from age four, driving cars and tractors at age eight and operating large 4WD articulating tractors, grain harvesters and semi trailers from age 16.

Tim played AFL for 20 years, including six years with the Whitsunday Sea Eagles. He was part of a premiership winning team in 2004, before retiring. He burnt his footy boots as a statement to the world that he had retired, but bought a new pair the following year, much to his wife’s jovial disgust! These days he’s content watching footy, riding his motorbike and having a laugh with his wife Norina and friends, but never say never to him lacing up the boots again one day.

He spent his early twenties in Geelong, and journeyed up the coast on his motorbike, in search of a warmer climate. Having never travelled north of Brisbane, he took three months winding up the coast in search of the ideal location to call home, and found Airlie Beach.
Matt McLellan Mackay land rover
“I knew it would be an adventure, but I didn’t anticipate how profoundly it would change my life.” With its blissful tropical islands, intriguing culture and people with beaming smiles, you don’t need a lot of convincing to visit the beautiful island nation of Fiji. Matt McLellan was eager to make a difference on his holiday, so he spent time living with Fijian tribes, assisting with education and water conservation. “It highlighted to me just how lucky we are in Australia, and more importantly, taught me to value the small things in life, as the privileges we often take for granted are often the things that matter most,” Matt said. Matt grew up in Mackay, and above all, treasures his time with family. He moved to Townsville to attend university, before coming home to Mackay four years later. His best friend was working in the automotive industry, and approached Matt with a job opportunity. “I discovered that I enjoyed working in sales, so after two years of experience in Mackay, I moved to Brisbane to gain experience in a metro environment,” Matt said. Matt graduated to a sales manager position within only six months, and after missing the Mackay weather, he made the move back home, where Goodall’s offered him the sales manager position at Mackay Land Rover on Macalister Street. “Goodall’s is a fantastic environment to be part of, because of the family-owned atmosphere. With Peggy and Arthur being directly involved with the business, and easily approachable, it makes a great environment to work in that’s very supportive. “Being run by local people, we offer thorough and friendly local service. By offering the best service, a great range of vehicles and on-site servicing, I believe we are among the leaders in our industry, which is why our customers don’t hesitate to return,” Matt said.

With a passion for travelling, Matt and his partner Naomi are currently planning their next adventure. It will take a lot to top the enriching experience in Fiji, but the couple are up for the challenge.

Pantone colour of the year for 2014
“radiant orchid” C29 M 69 y 0 K 0
A touch of Radiance The czars of colour have spoken, and this year will be radiant!
contrast against white is too harsh, so think of a slightly pale blue, with hints of gray. It will uplift and reenergize a neutral base, including taupe and beige.
“Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.”
Radiant Orchid also complements olive and verdant green, and teams up well with other bright splashes of colour, such as yellow and turquoise.
Pantone, known as the global authority on colour, have chosen Radiant Orchid as the on-trend colour for 2014. The charismatic colour premiered in spring 2014 fashion collections in Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi. How can I apply it in my home?
While it’s not practical to change your interior with every new colour trend that bursts onto the scene, this shade is so alive that it really doesn’t take much to transform a drab area into an exciting retreat. It can be as simple as changing an area rug, adding a vase and throwing on some cushions to completely transform a room. Bring in the bold with Radiant Orchid and enjoy experimenting with colour. You’ll end up creating a space which not only livens the mood of your home, but the mood of its occupants.
Radiant Orchid isn’t a shy shade. It’s bold and brash and not everyone’s cup of tea. The key to incorporating it into your interior design is to use it as an accent. The bright colour is best used judiciously in small doses, with splashes of the bold hue making a statement against an otherwise neutral palette. The

It’s unstructured, there are no rules, and that’s probably why we love it!
An everlasting elegance, a reminder of a classic past, when beauty was feminine, and softness reigned supreme. It’s shabby, it’s chic, and it’s as popular today as it’s ever been. If you are ready to embrace the timeless aesthetic of Shabby Chic, but aren’t quite ready to surrender your modern living vibe, the perfect place to begin is in the bedroom. Dreamy cottons, pale hues and a touch of unexpected glam set the scene for romance and relaxation, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the tag shabby translates into cheap. You’d be surprised at how much a weathered mirror, or even a wooden stool can set you back once it has been branded as shabby chic. With patience, some elbow-grease and an eye for elegance, you may be surprised at how affordable the change can be.
The bed
Retain the comfort of a modern bed, but create a rustic look by using recycled materials as a headboard. Think part of a wooden wall from a country barn, old wooden doors or antique wooden shutters. Or construct wooden shelving using recycled fence timber. If you’re going to splash out on something new, then concentrate on your bed dressings. High quality cotton sheets and feminine fabrics will add to both the comfort and style factors, and a canopy will up the elegance and romance.
Furniture
By visiting a second hand store or auction, you may strike it lucky and find a selection of aged furniture which fits your colour scheme, but often this isn’t the case. When selecting your furniture, don’t let the condition of the exterior put you off. As long as the wood is solid, and it has some ornate features, it can be transformed. - To begin, remove any metal handles from drawers. - Sand the furniture to remove any protective coating, paint or varnish. - Remove the dust from sanding with a cloth and warm water, and allow to dry thoroughly before painting. - Apply two base coats of white paint to your furniture, and then follow with two coats of top coat in your choice of colour, ensuring each coat is dry before the next is applied. You may be so pleased with the result that you elect to leave your new furniture as is, but for a rustic feel, the next step is to distress your furniture. -. Where normal wear and tear would occur, sand in one direction to remove layers of paint. Focus on raised edges, around drawers and around corners, until you have received the desired look of age. - Reattach the handles, and your shabby chic bedroom furniture is complete, at a fraction of the cost of retail.
Lighting
Vintage charm, feminine glam. Shabby chic lighting is all about reflecting the romance and nostalgia of the past. The most common feature of a shabby chic bedroom is an ornate chandelier, adorned with roses, pearls and crystals to complement the existing accessories.
Mirror
A mirror is an important design element in shabby chic style, because it acts as a continuation of light and space. It can make the room feel larger, and it can reflect important features, such as the chandelier. The mirror should be large and ornate, or if this is proofing difficult to find, try a selection of smaller mirrors, all randomly hung in the same area, as if they were pieces of art.
Accessories
This is the fun part. There are no hard and fast rules, so as long as it matches the era, and complements the colour scheme, then it’s an opportunity to explore your creativity. Think about what you want the room to achieve. Is it rustic? Is it romantic? Or does it represent vintage glam? Old luggage and hat boxes are a popular addition, as are antique plates and tea sets. An old hat rack will add a quirky addition, and antique candelabra can enhance the romantic ambience. www.corelife.com.au 29

Invest in happiness Whether you are throwing a pool party, taking a dip as reprieve from the heat, or simply relaxing on those balmy tropical evenings, the pool has a way of bringing friends and family together. It’s an investment in happiness, and a fulfilling way to enhance your lifestyle. It’s an investment Kevin and Richelle Underhill chose for their family, and after researching the Mackay market, chose Narellan Pools. “We met Rob from Narellan, and found him to be very friendly and approachable. Nothing was a problem. “Narellan had a fantastic range of designs for us to choose from, and we were very space conscious about what would fit in our chosen area. We thought we may have to install a lap pool, but after consultation with Rob, we discovered that a larger pool would fit, in a style that perfectly matched our expectations. “We had an exceptionally tight deadline for Narellan to work to. We wanted the pool to be installed before our son’s 21st birthday, and Rob and his team worked weekends and late evenings to achieve this,” Richelle said.
Kevin and Richelle were pleased at how stress free and easy the process was. “Rob organised everything, from the concreters and tilers, to the plumber and even the installation of the fence. There was constant communication throughout the process, and everyone on Rob’s team was friendly and approachable. “We were even impressed with the professionalism and friendliness of his contractors. Everyone was obliging and did an excellent job. We couldn’t recommend him highly enough,” Richelle said. After care is an important factor when building a pool, and 12 months since its installation, the Underhills have commended Rob for his continuation of service and care. “He kept in contact with us, checking periodically that there were no issues. He genuinely cares about the quality of his product. We couldn’t be happier with the overall result,” Richelle said. Beat the summer heat, and find out how Narellan Pools can enhance your lifestyle.

Majestic managing director and award-winning designer Naomi Otto said the two businesses now came under the one umbrella, Relaxed Living Homes, and shared an incredible passion for quality home design, investing their time, expertise and professionalism to make luxury living affordable in Mackay. “As a highly trained professional building designer we have aesthetics and amenities, structural adequacy and building codes at the forefront of our minds, exactly the way an architect and engineer does. Additionally, we help you build to a budget and design the home according to your block of land, the aspect, breezes and what is most energy efficient. This saves you money in the long-term. There’s huge benefits to using a building designer rather than picking a plan off a builder’s board where you are limited in the changes you can make,” Ms Otto said. State-of-theart computer 3D modelling allowed their clients to get the feel of their new home which was always very exciting, she said. With more than 26 years of broad industry experience as a designer, Majestic and their collaboration with Relaxed Living Homes offered their clients freedom of choice, expression of style and to be actively involved in the design and build process. Clients were able to choose from three services: Design only (using your own builder); Build only (bring in your plans for a fully comprehensive quote) or; Full design and construct service. “When taking on the full design/construct contract you are also able to absorb the normally out-of-pocket design costs into your build contract which is a huge advantage as not everyone can afford to outlay money upfront,” Ms Otto said. They also offered free interior design services to their build clients. As award-winning builders, Relaxed Living Homes have a proud reputation for premium quality at an affordable price. Directors Ross Gee, who is a qualified building surveyor and licensed builder with more than 20 years experience in the industry, and Craig Otto, a licensed painter and decorator, carpenter, welder/fabricator with more than 28 years experience in construction, have a wealth of experience in all facets of construction from concept to end product. The company scooped the pool at the recent 2014 Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards claiming the titles of Best Individual Home in the $776,000 to $1 million category, Best Bathroom, Apprentice of the Year (Benjamin Thiele) and Apprentice Employer of the Year.
The dream is a well-designed and affordable home which is as individual and unique as those who reside in it. Your home should be the ultimate reflection of your lifestyle. daydream
a teenage
written by Marissa Van Moolenbroek
Have you ever wondered what the dream bedroom of your teenage girl might look like if she had designed it herself? Marissa Van Moolenbroek from Mackay’s Mercy College shares her decadent daydream. “As I walk up the silver velvet staircase leading to the second floor, I find myself in a vast oasis of silver, black and aqua. My attention is immediately drawn to the plush queen sized bed adorned with sheets of aqua and silver, a place where nothing but sweet dreams could be made. “Above the bed proudly hangs a glass chandelier, the sunlight bouncing off it, sending rainbows in every direction of the room. On each side of the bed sits modern, silver bedside tables with crystal handles. The lamp on top of the right bedside table has a black, heart-shaped shade covering the dimly lit bulb. “I pull back the sheer aqua curtains to reveal a balcony on the opposite side of the room to where the bed is. As I step outside something takes my breath away, I am not sure if it was the gentle ocean breeze or the picturesque view. “As I walk back into the room I gaze upon a wall, adorned with black and white pictures of my family, friends and I laughing and having fun. I quickly skim through the photos, revisiting the many holidays I had enjoyed with my family remembering the moments like they were only yesterday. “I continue into my walk-in-wardrobe. Up to my knees are shelves displaying shoes in every colour you could imagine. Hanging above are dresses, jumpsuits and clothes of all different lengths and colours. There is an aqua cushioned seat in the corner of the robe which is recessed into the wall. “On the left side of the seat are shelves that reach up to the ceiling, filled with perfume. On the other side are many different sized draws, displaying jewellery. “As I reach the end of the walk-in-robe, I see a high set makeup table with a mirror surrounded by lights, resembling that of a Hollywood movie set. The silver stool with aqua velvet cushioning sits underneath the centre of the table, surrounded by drawers full of makeup. “My ensuite hosts a large spa bath in the far right corner. What is left of the right wall is taken up by a floor to ceiling window, overlooking the ocean. There is a lit caramel and vanilla scented candle, sitting on the bench, creating a sweet smelling aroma. “Not a single thing could be changed to make that room better. It was my dream bedroom.”

home at with Ross and Diane Armstrong
An endlessly changing horizon is one of the greater joys which this life can bring, as discovered by Ross and Diane Armstrong, part owners of the Whitsunday Airpark. Ross and Diane spend the majority of their time at their grain growing enterprise, Armstrong and Sons, located 85km south-east of Emerald. They have four sons, two of which work full time on the family farm. The purchase and servicing of their helicopter led them to the Whitsunday Airport, where they were introduced to the concept of the Whitsunday Aviation Village Estate, the opportunity to combine their love of flying with a luxurious coastal home. “The idea of being able to land right in front of our home appealed to us. The only traffic noise we have is that of other aircraft. At dusk we can sit on the front terrace and watch the other pilots return from a day among the islands,” Ross said. 40 www.corelife.com.au
On the farm, Diane looks after the administration of the business and tends to her large garden, but with the nearest town being 85km away, she looks forward to time at Airlie, where her home is reliably serviced, and dining options are nearby, allowing for true relaxation.
The exterior is modern, featuring both curves and angles, adding to its visual appeal. Featuring a hangar large enough to house two helicopters, this home also has four bedrooms, each with their own walk-in wardrobes and ensuites. Perfect for when Ross and Diane’s four sons and their partners and children visit. Through the large front doors, guests are greeted by a spacious open living area, with kitchen, dining and living stretched across a generous space.

“The br e eze passes thr ough ef fortlessly, giving the home an outdo or fe el once it is opened up”
Bamboo flooring and a crisp white interior is enhanced by light which streams through large louvered windows. Above the entertaining area is another comfortable retreat, perched on a bridge which travels the length of the room, and has views across the runway to the front and pool area to the back through more louvered windows. “The breeze passes through effortlessly, giving the home an outdoor feel once it is opened up,” Diane said.
Travelling is a passion for Diane and Ross, within Australia and overseas, but with their luxurious relaxation pad at Airlie, they have their sights set on a Whitsunday retirement. Diane commented, “We’re excited about the future prospects at the Airpark, it’s becoming a special community with the added excitement of the day to day activities of the Whitsunday islands, and an ideal location for pilots to live their dream.”
The kitchen is a mix of glamour and functionality, with a hidden bar behind the splash back. The hanging pendant lights are a favourite design feature of Diane’s. The illuminated staircase is on trend with stairs that look as though they are floating, held in place by a centered beam. A cosy children’s reading corner is a playful feature underneath the stairwell. In the media room, comfort is key, with a large couch and window seat for relaxation. The accented aqua tones reflect the brilliant blues of the pool which can be seen through the windows.
The master bedroom is located above the hangar, and overlooks the pool area. Ross enjoys the floor to ceiling windows which are back dropped by verdant rainforest. Making the most of the tropical ambiance, the home has a relaxation terrace at the front of the home, as well as a pool, teppanyaki bar and lounge area at the back.

thinking of buying or selling? do you need someone to manage your investment?
meet your local agent Your home is your castle, and whether you are buying or selling, the transaction you are about to enter into is potentially one of the largest you will make in your life. The preparations your make when entering the property market, might mean the difference between getting a good price on your home and getting a great price. The first step in the process of buying or selling real estate is to find a knowledgeable and reputable agent who will provide invaluable help throughout the process. From the Whitsunday islands, to the Mackay Marina, meet your local agents who are passionate about property.
Flexibility and results are what Cassy Dickerson believes gives Sell Buy Lease the competitive edge. “Our clients will say that we go above and beyond with service, seeing a project through to completion and getting the best result. “We have the flexibility to give people choices, in addition to a traditional full real estate service. “The different options we provide can save thousands of dollars in commission, including a no commission option which helps clients list and sell their own property,” Cassy said. Cassy moved to Mackay six years ago from Sydney, with her husband who originally grew up in Mackay. She prides herself on being down to earth and genuine and has made many great friends in this town. “Looking back at the changes that have happened in Mackay as a result of my job is always a great feeling, including seeing the happy look on the faces of my clients at settlement. It’s a fantastic feeling being able to help people and shape the community, I love the new exciting venues that are a result of helping my clients,” Cassy said.

Aside from real estate, her family is her passion and she enjoys supporting her children in their sporting achievements along with her own. She recently fulfilled a goal of her own, wanting to conquer the jumps at the GoWake Cable Park, showing her children how rewarding it can be when you don’t give up on something just because it seems hard. If she can do it, so can they, whether it’s personal or professional aspirations, she hopes her children will have the determination to chase their dreams too.
Providing a savvy solution for buyers and sellers is Dee Mangion’s specialty. She understands that not all buyers and sellers have the same needs, which is why she tailor’s specialised solutions to ensure the best result possible. Dee’s personalised service goes beyond traditional marketing methods. Being an independent agent with Mackay Regional Real Estate, she has the flexibility to give her clients more. She works closely with other specialists, including finance professionals, photographers and videographers, conveyancers, interior design gurus and experienced writers, so her clients are being assisted by the best in the business, at every stage of the process. Dee lived in Victoria before making the move to Mackay, and has many years of experience in sales and marketing, as well as home decorating and design, landscaping and gardening. She enjoys the challenge that real estate brings, especially when families find the home of their dreams. “I like to personalise my service to every client. If it is a first homebuyer, I imagine what service I would want for my own children if it were them searching for their perfect home to grow in, or if it is an elderly couple, what service would I hope for if it were my parents. “I understand how important the acquisition or the sale is to them, and use my knowledge of the Mackay market and experience in sales to implement strategies to create a successful and fulfilling outcome,” Dee said.

“I have a special man to thank, for giving me the life-changing opportunity to move into real estate.” Terry McMullen a single parent with 3 young children back in 1994, moved from Sutherland Shire Sydney, to make the most rewarding move of his life. “Mr Erik Fairbairn, a very special person whom I am privileged to know. His belief in me launched my career to where it is now, and I thank him for the life-changing effect he has had on my life,” Terry said. With 20 years of experience as a real estate agent, Terry believes that the simplicity of the independent agency he owns with his wife Cathy, offers a more personalised service. “The driving force behind the business is the passion we have for our customers, and I wouldn’t be able to deliver the level of dedication that I do without my wife Cathy. Thanks sweetheart, I love you,” Terry said. Terry is passionate about the Whitsundays, and is excited about the growth and development of Midge Point. “Carlisle Waters Estate in our beautiful township of Midge Point is a stunning 4 staged development. Just visit www.carlislewaters.com.au and you will see 103 reasons why we love Midge Point,” Terry said. Away from home, if it has an engine and wheels, then it has Terry’s attention. Motor cycling is his passion, but with his boys Tim and Graham, they also enjoy drag racing and try to make it to Willowbank annually.

Inspired by the warm Whitsunday weather, Cathy moved from Sydney in 1990, with her family and in conjunction with the beginning of Laguna Quays Resort. She had a cleaning business and a hairdressing salon based at the resort, and she soon fell in love with her tropical surroundings. After obtaining her real estate license in 2006, she and her husband Terry opened Airlie Beach and Whitsunday Real Estate, an independent agency, at their beautiful Midge Point Home. “Our clients appreciate the lovely and relaxing surroundings when they visit our office, a very different environment to visiting a traditional shop. “Good old fashioned service goes a long way as an agent, and it’s important to give our clients dedication, while keeping channels of communication open,” Cathy said. Cathy is appreciative of the buyers and sellers who have supported their agency over the years, and hope that she has provided them with a positive real estate experience. “It’s an all-consuming lifestyle, but one that is very rewarding. The excitement between buyers and sellers as they move toward new chapters in their lives is wonderful to be a part of. We do try to get a Sunday off where possible, so Terry and I can put our feet up, enjoy the beautiful Whitsundays and eat and drink to our heart’s content.” www.corelife.com.au 43

What if I lose my Job? ARTICLE WRITTEN BY STEVE TAYLOR
It is a bit like not crossing the road in case you get run over by a bus. Should there only be a slight chance of losing your job, it is folly to miss the opportunity of building a residential property portfolio in this buyers’ market. Each individual client has different aims and financial ability, so I organise their lending accordingly, and in all such situations, create a financial buffer or “shock absorber”. This can be as simple as making an extra repayment bi monthly i.e. in one year the client would have created a six month “shock absorber” Another method if using equity is to borrow say an extra $30 and deposit this in an offset savings account. This would cover 12 months unemployment on a $500k loan. The borrowing costs are nil as it is offset against the loan account. If one is using equity in their home and buying an investment property with an interest only facility, I would encourage them to accelerate the home loan repayments to create a “shock absorber”. Do not let the possibility of job loss stop you from saving tax and creating wealth.

Tips to buying a property during the festive season Trying to find and purchase your dream home is not an easy task. That task is made even harder when you are trying to get your property purchase sorted in your summer holiday, over the festive period. But while house hunting during the Christmas and New Year period can be a stressful experience, it may also be a great time to get the ball rolling on your next property purchase.

Indeed, over the festive period, there tends to be a drop off in buying activity, meaning there are less buyers actively on the hunt for a property. With less competition, you may just be able to find and successfully buy your dream home. Moreover, with interest rates continuing to hover around record lows, now really is a good time to jump into the property market.

Here are five tips to help you enjoy a stress-free home buying experience:
•Identify your property needs •Make the most of property inspections •Define your monetary limits •Prepare and regularly update a budget •Research your home loan options

STAGING can maximise the sale price of your property!
your savvy real estate solution
what is staging?
0409 434 259
Staging your home is a method of decorating that is designed to showcase the home’s best assets, impress buyers and sell quickly for the highest possible price. Your home might be beautiful; maybe it’s immaculate, stylishly suited to your taste. Perhaps it is all of these things. This may not necessarily mean it is presented correctly for sale! Staging is different to decorating! I see many home sellers confuse staging with decorating and consequently resisting the process and the recommendations of the staging professional. But the reality is that the moment you commit to marketing your home for sale, you need to commit to transforming your home into a place that potential buyers can easily picture as their home. This means that you need to be prepared to emotionally detach.
Why Home Staging Is Important
Although staging is optional, it really shouldn’t be. When you’re dealing with such a significant financial transaction, if possible you don’t want to settle for a lower selling price or a longer marketing period than you have to. By staging your property you are maximising it’s potential to buyers. Your property will

stand out in the crowd when it’s dressed to impress, giving your home a unique sale point. In a competitive buyers market as we are experiencing in Mackay, the presentation of your home needs to be at it’s best to attract the buyer. Staging a home targets potential buyers. I offer a free consultation with a professional, which includes a comprehensive report to anyone who lists their home with me. Synergy for Port of Airlie When the pieces of a puzzle fit together, the resulting vision is far more spectacular than the individual pieces standing alone. This strength of this collaboration is known as synergy, and is a force which has made the Port of Airlie one of the greatest developments on the Queensland Coast.
93 year lease options on marina berths, in a variety of sizes. The term is previously unheard of, and the attraction of this asset with a 93 year lease has proven popular, with the majority of berths already leased.
The seamless integration of the new Cruise Whitsundays terminal has cemented the Port of Airlie as a destination, and adds another feather in the cap of Airlie Beach’s attraction appeal.
Port of Airlie’s completed boardwalk has broadened the boundary of Airlie’s main shopping and dining precinct, creating a short stroll to Airlie’s lagoon, swimming beach and popular Saturday morning beach markets.
No longer is Airlie Beach simply the gateway to the Whitsundays. It is an exciting hub of culture and cuisine, a tempting tourism mecca in its own right.
This makes leasing a berth at the Port of Airlie more attractive, as provisions from main retailers such as Woolworths are now within walking distance from the marina.
Thanks to the state-of-the-art Cruise Whitsundays terminal, visitors can now step off the boat and straight into the heart of Airlie. The Port of Airlie offers a zestful range of retail shopping and delicious delicacies, from national brands such as Billabong and the Coffee Club, to specialty surprises, Aimer Accessory’s and Denman Cellars.
Completing the Port of Airlie puzzle is the sale of waterfront land, in one of the most sought-after, desirable locations Australia has ever seen. Opportunities for exclusive seaside living are exceptionally rare, especially in a location as desirable as Airlie Beach. 11 contracts are already underway, with 9 unconditional, leaving the remaining land in even hotter demand.
The 56 Boathouse Apartments at the Port of Airlie are all now completely sold, and through Outrigger Resorts, visitors can choose spacious apartments overlooking paradise at the port itself. For those who seek the adventure of the sea, Port of Airlie offers incredible
Stay in the luxurious Boathouse Apartments, play on the azure Whitsundays water or gaze over the marina with a pinot in hand. Port of Airlie is the new destination in demand. www.corelife.com.au 51

Lettuce Grow
Spring has arrived, and it’s the perfect time to introduce your children to hearty, home-grown vegetables, grown in your very own backyard. Children are curious by nature, and the joy that comes from seeing their excitement as they plant, cultivate and harvest their own vegetables, is priceless. Your backyard is an outdoor classroom, where children can dig, play and plant. Being able to present food to the dinner table which they have grown themselves will give them an immense sense of accomplishment, while also developing a sense of responsibility and pride, which can improve their self-esteem and confidence.
What should you be planting?
Vegetables that grow well in spring include beetroot, Chinese cabbage, carrot, corn, chilli, parsnip, celery, leek, lettuce, radish, rockmelon, watermelon and silver beet. In your herb pots plant basil, chilli, thyme, sage, coriander, chives, dill, ginger, mint, oregano and parsley.
• Locate the ideal location. Choose an area of your yard which will receive at least a few hours of sunlight each day.
When the warmer weather arrives, vegetables that respond well to temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius include beans, capsicum, eggplant, potato, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato, cucumbers, zucchini and pumpkins.
• Prepare your garden bed, pots or planter box by filling them with nutrient-rich soil or potting mix. Add quality compost to boost your food’s growing power.
If you want to add brightness to your garden and your interior, now is a great time to plant sunflowers, and your children will love to watch them grow.
• Choose a mixture of seeds and seedlings for planting variation, and mark out rows according to the planting specifications. Make sure you include some root vegetables for your children to dig up like a treasure hunt when the vegetables are grown. • Water your plants well, and mulch where possible to assist in keeping the moisture in. Use pest-resistant products to keep insects and animals from ruining your hard work. • When harvest time arrives, show your children how to dig potatoes, pull carrots and pick strawberries and lettuce leaves. www.corelife.com.au 53

NAME Marissa Van Moolenbroek AGE 14 PASSIONS Journalism, dancing and modelling. FAVOURITE COLOUR Blue FAVOURITE TV SHOW Dance Moms FAVOURITE MUSICIAN Pink The art of writing is to start with nothing, and finish with a profound and captivating statement. There isn’t a defining moment in a writer’s life where they become a writer, but there is often an epiphany when a writer understands that their talent is a passion they wish to share with others. Mercy College student, Marissa Van Moolenbroek, has a passion for storytelling. It is this desire to share information with others that has sparked her fascination with journalism. Marissa recently spent one week on work experience with Core Magazine’s journalist, Amanda Wright, to gain insight into her eclectic and deadline-driven career however, as Amanda discovered, there’s more to this talented student than just an excellent grasp of literacy. Marissa’s artistic and creative flair extends past writing, to the performing arts. She spends her afternoons dancing, acting and modelling. She is currently in her third year with Brooke Lee Modeling, and explains how it has given her the confidence to come out of her shell. “Before becoming a student of Brooke Lee, I was very shy and believed that I wasn’t good enough to even talk to people. Now I am able to stand up in front an audience no matter how large and speak with confidence and without hesitation,” she said. In 2013, Marissa won the 13 to 17 age group category at the CQ RACQ Rescue Model Search competition, and was also awarded Brooke Lee’s senior model of the year. In the recent Miss Teen Australia competition, Marissa was awarded second runner-up in the Central Queensland regional finals. In conjunction with Fame Talent School, Marissa traveled to the United States of America, and danced in a parade at Disneyland. She enjoys jazz, ballet and contemporary dance, and has competed at Eisteddfod competitions throughout Queensland. With blank pages to fill, Marissa’s journey in life promises to be one of excitement.
first dental visit! Parents are often given conflicting information by health professionals and the media regarding the first dental visit. The main reasons for attending the dentist around the age of one year are to establish a ‘dental home’: detect risk factors for dental caries (decay) and to provide advice and information. There are a number of developmental issues effecting the oral cavity that are best detected as early as possible. These include gingival pathology, assessment of the correct timing of tooth eruption, and detection of dental defects of enamel. Teeth showing these defects are more susceptible to develop dental caries ‘decay’. Despite advances in preventive dentistry, dental decay remains one the most common childhood disease. Many children are not visiting dentists until the decay process is well established and preventive strategies alone are not able to help adequately. It has been reported in children between 9 and 18 months of age, white spot marks are more prevalent than decay. After 18 months decay is more prevalent. Once dental decay is detected traditional drill and fill management is required which requires cooperation from young children and is financially costly. A dental visit in the first year of life allows dental staff to identify high decay risk infants and put in place preventive programs to maintain and improve oral health. The first dental exam should occur after the eruption of the first baby tooth and no later than 12 months of age. - Australian Dental Association

Improve Learning, Health & Behaviour with Food & Nutrition While “Nutritional Therapy” (change) can seem overwhelming, with an educated guiding hand, even busy mums and dads can, and do, make it work. As a child feels better, parents often have more quality time with their children and cooking becomes more enjoyable. And nutritious meals needn’t cost a fortune. There is overwhelming scientific support for “diet and nutritional intervention” for ADHD, Autism and more. Many studies indicate that children with Autism and ADHD have deficiencies and that supplements improved language, play, sociability, hyperactivity, cognition, eye contact, and more.
CUMULATIVE SCIENCE SCREAMS
”pay attention to food and nutrition.”
Home & Garden Hands-on learning through gardens either at home or school provide a wealth of opportunities for children to get their hands dirty while learning lessons in many different areas of a curriculum.
Rhonda Muller Many parents report that their children make wonderful gains in: • language - it may be an increase in words, speaking in sentences, or back and forth conversation • behaviour, a reduction in irritability or tantrums, or less hyperactivity • relief of digestive upset • fewer colds and infections • happier and healthier • quality of life If your child is a picky eater, look for what might be underlying the picky eating. There are many reasons for picky eating, some might be medical, others could be: • addiction to foods • nutrient deficiencies causing: poor sense of taste, sensory sensitivity and issues with textures and anxiety over food. Children, as ‘Biologists’, can study the anatomy of the plants they tend; young ‘scientists’ may change variables in the garden through watering frequency or the spacing of their plants, then collect the data on plant growth, chart the research and write up their analyses and conclusions. As they design the layout of planting beds then lessons on perimeters, measurements and area come to the fore. Even the youngest students can learn basic measurements as they use a ruler to find the proper spacing when planting their seeds or plants. It is surprising just how often maths skills are used outside a dedicated school ‘Mathematics’ class. Reading and writing skills are constantly being practiced as part of a school or home garden. There are seed packets to read and interpret, along with the recipes used to turn their harvest into a delightful dish. Without even being aware they are learning and improving their skills children are more than happy to undertake these literacy tasks. In the school or home garden, watering cans are a great way to enhance learning about estimating as well as volume and capacity. A garden gives children the added reward of valuable nutrition lessons on the importance and joys of eating fresh foods. It provides opportunities to teach about nutrition when children sample their harvest; children are much more likely to taste a vegetable they have grown, and vegetables always taste better straight from the garden! Gardens at school and home also provide a wealth of opportunities for teamwork. Children need to work together to prepare the soil, select and plant the seeds, and water the plants; they need to stay on top of the weeding! These opportunities to take responsibility and work with others can build students’ confidence, self-esteem, and harvesting their crop is a sign of their success. School and home gardens may take variety of forms, from the simplest containers outside to a multi-plot, in-ground garden featuring seating areas, rain water tanks and a greenhouse. The size of a garden does not limit the potential to contribute to a ‘learning’ environment. A school or home garden enhances a range of skills in a fun, ‘real life’ way, often without the children even knowing they are learning; the benefits are readily available to all, so go and toil that soil!

Iconic Bride of the month
Cherrie Green “Selecting Iconic Bride photography was by far the easiest choice when planning our wedding; Norina is very highly regarded, and when you see her work it’s clear why.
“Her attention to detail and ability to capture a moment is like none other. We were after a candid story of our day, photos that would bring our love to life and capture the atmosphere, so when we learned Norina was available for our wedding we were over the moon. “We did an engagement photo shoot with Norina earlier in the year and the experience was invaluable; we had such fun, but also learnt lots, saw how Norina interacted, developed a bond, and were able to trial some ideas before our big day. “Norina is a true professional, incredibly relaxed and easy to work with, unobtrusive on the day making both us, and our guests feel comfortable and ensuring the real, raw emotion was captured.” What was your ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’? My something old was my great aunt’s, mother’s marcasite brooch, and my something borrowed was Michael’s grandmother’s marcasite brooch. Both brooches were fixed to the inside of the hand piece of my bouquet. My something new was my bridal gown and my something blue was my garter. I wasn’t aware that the full saying actually includes… “and a silver sixpence in her shoe,” until one of my bridesmaids gave me a beautiful card with the original Victorian rhyme and a sixpence the day before our wedding. So, I also had the sixpence attached to the underside of my wedding shoe. The last part of the rhyme is often forgotten, but the sixpence represents good fortune and prosperity. Tell us about your wedding dress. I was looking for something simple, modern and elegant. My bridal gown was a ‘Roz La Kelin’ design from Brisbane. What is your most memorable moment from the day? There are MANY! We loved every minute, and have so many memorable moments with our nearest and dearest. Hearing each other’s vows, Michael’s ring not fitting, sunset drinks and laughs with our bridal party, the best man’s cringe worthy, but hilariously unforgettable speech, feasting on delicious Spanish tapas inspired from our month in Spain last year, acting up in the photo booth, dancing up a storm to our favourite songs, the dramatic bouquet tussle, our MC speaking Spanish…it was everything we had hoped for our wedding day and more! What is your best piece of advice for future brides? Invest in a lot of ‘Post-it-notes’ and get on Pinterest!
SILVER DISTINCTION AWARD Norina was Awarded a Silver Distinction in the wedding category at the (APPA) Australian Professional Photographers Awards held in Sydney recently. Congratulations Norina!

Zenny
dressed by reef goddess, airlie beach
“This gave me the confidence to finish my nutrition degree and start my own personal training business” Often it can be those closest to us who can provide our greatest source of motivation.
Zenny is now on a career path she loves, and wakes with the same bounce and enthusiasm as she saw in her fiancée Jonathan.
For Zenny Godden, the motivation to change her life came from her soonto-be husband, Jonathan.
She commented, “He really is my greatest supporter and biggest inspiration. It is amazing how one person can change your whole outlook on life.”
“Jonathan is my biggest inspiration. Early in our relationship I discovered how excited he was to get out of bed and start his day, because of his love and passion for his career. “He’s a chiropractor, and every morning he was fired up to go and “save some spines,” as he put it. It sounds funny, but it gave me the opportunity to look at my own direction in life, and it helped me to realise that I was on the wrong career path,” Zenny said. With Jonathan’s support and encouragement, Zenny took a year away from work and focused on study, forming a business plan. Personal Training wasn’t a direction which Zenny had envisioned for herself, although keeping fit and taking a personal interest in health and well-being had always been a part of who she was.
On a trip back to Jonathan’s hometown, Pittsburgh in the United States of America, the couple ventured to the top of Mount Washington, which overlooks the city. It began to snow, and as Zenny turned to look at Jonathan, she saw him on bended knee, holding the most perfect diamond ring she had ever seen. “It was the perfect moment, the best moment of my life,” Zenny said. Great things evolve from kindness and encouragement. You never know when one kind act or one word of encouragement will change a life forever!
She regularly went to the gym, but it wasn’t until she discovered functional fitness methodologies and high-intensity interval training that she started to see incredible results.
THE WAIT IS FINALLY OVER- YOUR BEST BODY MEAL PLAN IS NOW AVAILABLE!
“I found the workouts fun and the atmosphere motivated me to be better. I started to involve some of my close friends in my workouts at home, and they loved the sessions too.
Zenny’s meal plan is now available on her new website at www.zenergyhealth.com.au
“This gave me the confidence to finish my nutrition degree and start my own personal training business,” Zenny said.
It’s available in two formats, a printed and mailed out version downloadable pdf documeny.
Zenny’s business, Zenergy Health and Fitness, offers one-on-one personal training and small group training, focusing on HIIT, Plyometric training, strength training and weightlifting. She now has close to 100 ladies who train with her, and she has published her own nutrition guide.

MODEL Jannaya Hajdu > STYLIST Meryn Dunn > MAKE UP ARTIST Lauren Skippen ‘Blush it Make Up Artist’
Meryn wanted to achieve a colour that would give Janaya a new fresh feel but still keeping it very natural. Meryn decided to lighten Jannaya’s hair up to suit her natural colour. Meryn Lifted Jannaya’s hair 6 shades lighter and then used Schwarzkopfs Igora Royal metallics range to complete Jannaya’s new light brown. Meryn accented Jannaya’s hair with soft dark blonde panels underneath creating variation throughout the hair. Meryn then cut Jannaya’s hair strong and blunt, a trend that you will see plenty of this season. The fashion Style cut at the moment is just on the collar bones below the shoulders. It’s a fantastic length as its not too short and still length to play with. To complete Jannaya’s hair, Meryn styled her hair with soft curls using the Cloud Nine Wide Iron. To compliment Jannaya’s new warm locks and porcelain complexion Lauren chose to use an airbrush foundation to create a flawless canvas to emphasize her features. Warm Bronzes and Dark brown hues were used to create smokey eyes which would create a focal point to the finished product. Lauren used a warm dark coral blush to help sculpture Jannaya’s cheek bones then finishing this look with a neutral natural tone of lipstick www.corelife.com.au 75

aging well
is this possible?
in our community, aging is still seen as something that we need to ‘fight’. does ‘aging’ mean for a woman that her position of mother, wife and employee become devalued, or worse, redundant? It is that time in life when our children are all grown up and on their way to their own lives. Or our career goals have been reached and we are left wondering ‘what now’. Not only are women faced with these challenges it is also a time in life for us to take on, once again a hormonal transition into what I like to call ‘our wise years’. In the medical world, this is called ‘menopause’, or as some others may refer to it as ‘men-a-pause’. It’s a time when many women are lead to believe that it is time for Hormone replacement therapy or they may go to the medical arena for some help and they are told “it’s Just Menopause” or “you can’t lose weight as it is menopause”. This is to be expected or another one we hear is “It’s OK, you are getting old now, weight gain and lack of libido is normal”. Well I don’t know about other woman out there but, I prefer the theory that our 50 is now the new 40 so we have at least 10 years of extra health and vitality to live! We know that diet plays a crucial role in aging well, ensuring our transition into our ‘wise years’ is as smooth as possible without medical or drug intervention. It’s not about fighting the inevitable clock. We have been getting old since conception however, we can choose how we age, what elements of life we want to embrace, what activities we do that fulfil us in every way and most importantly, how we view and talk to ourselves in this stage of our lives. What is our attitude when we wake in the morning? Is it one of excitement and anticipation of what your day might bring? And if it is not what we want, how can we change it? After all, life is a blessing. We have had 50 years to practice so now is the time to nurture and create ourselves love to pass on to others. To ensure that we have this right attitude and vitality the right food is imperative. What feeds your gut feeds your cells and feeds your brain, your food is who you become. So on your plate, what life do you want to serve up to yourself? If you would like to get on track to aging well for the month of October we have special coaching programs to get you started on reclaiming your health. Call the clinic for details.

Fad Diets
Why They SUCK
Why do smart women who suddenly become desperate to lose weight do extreme and often SILLY things to help them lose weight as fast as possible? It’s no secret that consistent and continual exercise and healthy eating habits are paramount to our longterm health, and not to mention the ‘side-effect’ of looking and feeling fantastic. But yet new last minute fad diets are being brought out all the time and the diet industry in Australia rakes in over $800 million in quick-fix weight loss solutions PER YEAR.
THEY DON’T WORK!
Nothing that is a quick fix, or a fad will ever work long-term. Any diet that screams the word “quick”, to get your attention, usually means extremely low calories, (to get the fastest result) or totally omitting a food group altogether for a period of time or a dreaded shake diet. They will NEVER work for you long-term. NEVER. And here’s a couple of reasons why: -
You MAY get a faster result by eating extremely low calories, but this isn’t sustainable and as soon as you resume your ‘normal’ way of eating ‘after that special event’, you will gain all the weight back, and more. You are more likely to go on an all-out binge fest because you have deprived yourself ‘until the event was over’, so now it’s catch-up time. The buttons on your pants will be bursting in no time. Guaranteed.
- If you omit a whole food group, let’s say carbs, as they have the name as being the enemy thanks to diets like “Atkins”, that is not sustainable to continue on LIFE-LONG. Cutting out ANY food group isn’t something you can do forever! As soon as you go back to ‘normal’ and resume eating everything you cut out, the weight will come back with it because you haven’t made permanent changes! If there was a secret of magic pill, everyone would have it and fad diets would be dead! Why not just eat smart, exercise regularly and have life-long results instead of the constant yo-yo dieting? It’s common sense, and healthy eating. You won’t find that in a shake sachet, or in a box on the supermarket shelf. It comes from a permanent lifestyle change. Educate yourself and use common sense. Stay away from advertising that has ‘quick fix’ or ‘fast’ mentioned in their advertising… they know how to play on your emotions. Don’t be a sucker. Be the smart woman you are. Nourish your body, and look after your health... for the LONG-TERM.

Learn the i-Lipo secret
Nobody enjoys the thought of having to cover up under the hot summer sun. The season for shorts is upon us, and if diet and exercise aren’t shifting those stubborn kilograms, we can help. At Allure, we want you to feel comfortable in your skin, and to make the most out of the summer months. How do we achieve this? By using an advanced, non-surgical fatreduction and body shaping system in Australia. It’s called i-Lipo, and it really can give you dramatic results, without a scalpel in sight.
What does i-Lipo do?
EMOVAL
LASER HAIR R
2O5FF% WITH
TS 6 TREATMEN
The i-Lipo system emits low levels of laser to penetrate the layers of fat under the skin. It disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the fat cell to be released through the body’s natural metabolic function, where it can be readily used by the body as energy. This procedure is noninvasive, totally painless and you will feel fantastic after treatment, so much so that we encourage 30 minutes of light exercise, to encourage your body to transform the released fat into energy.
What are the benefits?
i-Lipo is clinically proven to be an effective procedure for the removal of fat. Compared to clinical liposuction, i-Lipo is a more affordable option, with no risks and now down time. It is safe and painless, with no side effects. You can return to normal activities immediately after your procedure.
Offer ends September 31st 2014
Results can be seen and measured immediately after each session. Typically two to four centimetres in circumference reduction around the abdomen can be seen in one visit. The treatment can be targeted toward a particular problem area, such as under the chin, upper arms, abdomen or thighs. Where standard weight loss achieved through diet and exercise produces overall weight loss spread throughout the body, i-Lipo makes it possible to target fat loss to specific areas. Step out with confidence this summer, with a helping hand from Allure Aesthetic Rejuvenation Clinic, for an enhanced look that requires no photo-shopping.

the 5:2 fast diet what is it?
Have you ever heard of a diet which lets you have your cake and eat it too? Dr Michael Mosley is the creator of the 5:2 diet, which encourages a healthy intake of food for five days in the week, and intermittent fasting on the other two days. While any weight loss programme should be recommended by your doctor, the 5:2 diet has been practiced by various cultures throughout history and there’s evidence to support that it can assist with weight loss and promote health.
What celebs use the 5:2 method?
Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Miranda Kerr and Hugh Jackman have reportedly all used the 5:2 method to trim down for photo shoots and movie roles. Miranda, a certified nutritionist, is a fan of intermittent fasting diets. Hugh’s role as Wolverine meant the actor needed to bulk up and trim down all at the same time. Following a strict fasting diet, he would then eat large amounts on certain days of the week then fast for others to achieve the desired look.
The diet plan is simple and allows people to include life’s luxuries, such as a glass of wine or a chocolate biscuit, because on five days of the week, women can consume 2,000 calories per day, and men 2,500 calories. These calorie amounts can change dependent on recommendation from your doctor, depending on your body mass index. On the other two days of the week, which should be nonconsecutive days, you cut your calorie intake in quarter, so 500 calories for women and 600 calories for men. This method can be effective for people who aren’t traditionally good dieters, as it doesn’t enforce strictness on every day of the week, only two out of seven days, which can feel more realistic for some. You can’t feast on takeaways and chocolate bars for the other five days, however people who have success with this change of lifestyle proclaim that after fasting, you won’t be as inclined to gorge on the other days, as your body tends to feel nourished on smaller portions than you were used to previously.
What are the benefits?
Intermittent fasting has been proven as an effective way to lose weight because by cutting down on your calorie intake periodically, rather than all at once, your body goes into ‘repair mode’ and not ‘starvation mode’. This repair mode causes the body to restore damaged cells, which uses more energy, whereas starvation mode causes your body to store fat. Your metabolism remains stable, and is heightened when your body expends energy to repair damaged cells caused by dieting. Because of the planning and dedication which comes with fasting, it is a theory that your cognitive function may be improved, which can help to prevent conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Fasting for short periods can give your digestion system a rest, which is beneficial to overall health.

the screaming jets ANNOUNCE THEIR ATOMIC 47 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
The upcoming national tour for The Screaming Jets is going to be something very special, for fans and the band alike. The iconic rock band, originally from Newcastle, will be celebrating 25 years of great Aussie rock. 25 years seems like a long time to stick at one job, but when your job is to rock out as much as you can - it can feel like it’s flying by in the blink of an eye. Lead singer Dave Gleeson says this is a pretty massive milestone for the band whose humble beginnings started winning a Battle of the Bands competition. “As a young guy in a band, I think it was always a goal to be around for as long as you possibly could,” he says. Three years and 300 gigs, we were pretty proud. To reach the quarter of a century mark is obviously awesome.” The Screaming Jets have become part of the Australian music psyche. “To think we started in 1989 and we’re still doing it 25 years later to massive crowds around the country is unbelievable,” says Dave. The Screaming Jets will be sharing tracks from their as yet untitled new album, of all fresh material. Bass player Paul Woseen has been writing tracks, as has Dave and during the times the band are together, they’ve also been penning tracks for the upcoming release. “The songs come from all different directions and everyone gets to put themselves right into it,” says Dave “It’s what feeds the desire to get out on the road. “We can’t wait to get out on the road to tour Australia again,” Dave says. “This tour is going to be epic. Not only celebrating 25 years of the Jets music we all know and love, but busting out tracks from our new album.” The Screaming Jets new, as yet untitled album, is due for release to coincide with the tour. More details will be announced shortly.
