WHAT IS A THREAD LIFT? A thread lift is a popular procedure to achieve facial refreshment and improve skin quality without having to undergo surgery and the problem of scarring. The procedure is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that is performed here in our clinic with a minimum downtime and will cost much less than a conventional facelift. Typically, the thread lift procedure can be completed within an hour and you can return home within a few hours. There is no scarring associated with thread lifting and results usually last for 3-4 years. Here at Allure Dr Richard Hogben uses the Promoitalia and Silhouette soft absorbable threads which offer significant advantages compared to the older style lifting threads. These threads have small soft barbs that cling to the soft facial tissue and gently lift the tissue providing a support scaffolding that lifts and holds the tissue in place. The advantage of these newer threads is that they rebuild the structure of your skin from within. Dr Hogben has been performing this procedure for over 8 years and is also a trainer and supervisor to Doctors Australia wide. Call 1300 112 311 to book a complementary appointment with Dr. Richard Hogben to discuss your options.

From the

Editor

Welcome to the team, Bolzy! Despite living a life far more challenging than most of us could ever imagine, Ryan Boles is a man who prefers to take the ‘dis’ away from his ‘abilities’. Growing up with cerebral palsy, autism and challenges such as severe intellectual impairment and not being able to communicate verbally, he is also legally blind and has rods in his back for the repair of kyphosis. Yet during his final year at Mackay District Special School, Ryan was elected school captain, much to the delight of his supportive parents, Garth and Michelle.

This issue of Core Life Magazine reminds me once again what an amazing community we live in. Our famous Women in Business feature has exploded this year, featuring a record 39 inspirational and passionate women throughout our regions. Reading their stories I can see the brilliant and diverse lives they all have. It shows how anyone can do anything they want, whilst living out their dreams without limitation, just as I do. They are living examples of how the world is abundant and each of us can have as much or as little of anything as we like. Whether its starting our own business, reaching out to support community events or indulging in our favourite hobbies, our lives are like an all-you-can-eat buffet where our only limitation is what we have the stomach for! I can relate to this on a personal level, and am living proof opportunities for women are rife within our local community. I have been promoted to Managing Editor and am 6 months pregnant with my first baby. This would cause many women to be in an either/or situation, but I am lucky enough to have a boss and a job, which allows me to do both. This issue of Core Life is also the first in our series of ‘Destination Features’ offering a snapshot into the vibrant country town of Proserpine. We enjoyed taking a look at a community steeped in history, which has a rich culture and thriving entrepreneurial spirit. It was a pleasure to discover the town again and profile some of the amazing characters.

However, due to minimal pathways for members of the community with severe disabilities, Ryan had nowhere to go after he graduated from school. He watched as his siblings, Jake, Morgan and Cody, enjoyed the simple privileges in life we take for granted, such as driving a car or getting a job. He grew frustrated and restless, until his parents came up with a solution. With support from his family, the community and Life Stream Mackay, Bolzy’s Go4 Services was established; a local business to take care of the many menial chores we often don’t have time for, but which give Ryan and his two support workers a fulfilling purpose. Ryan performs a number of tasks, including dog walking, can collecting, grocery shopping, freight pick-up and delivery, appliance collection and disposal and mail delivery among others. He has also recently been contracted by Core Magazine to assist with our magazine distribution throughout Mackay. Editor-in-chief, Rebecca Douthwaite, commented “This month will be Ryan’s first full distribution with the Core publishing group and we are delighted to have him working with us.” In a world where we all want to belong, give a thought to those in our community who have tougher challenges to face. Your small gesture can mean the world to a person who longs to live a fulfilling life.

If you have an interesting story to share with the community please write to rachael@corelife.com.au

Hello from everyone at

VALUED AT $60 PER TICKET! A ONE HOUR COUPLES PAMPER PACKAGE including take home oils and relaxation cd

We’re just a few months into the year and it’s already shaping up to be a busy one for the Mackay region. In February, we welcomed the Cowboys and Roosters and supporters here for an NRL pre-season trial match at Stadium Mackay, and this month we’ll see AFL’s St Kilda take on the Brisbane Lions at Harrup Park. In a first for Mackay Airport, Virgin Australia are operating special charter flights to bring St Kilda supporters direct from Melbourne to Mackay to see the game. This is also giving locals the chance to enjoy direct flights to Melbourne. We hope it is the start of many more special charters from Mackay Airport, including some direct to New Zealand. Of course there’s a lot more to follow, with events like Mechanos Wings and Wheels, Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival, Run for the Reef and much more still to come in 2017.

Melissa Westcott BIG ON SHOES Fast 5 facts about Melissa Starsign: Pisces Favourite Artist: Tim McGraw Favourite Movie: Top Gun Favourite Food: Chicken Ceaser Salad Favourite Beverage: Spiced Rum After completing her teaching degree at Mackay’s CQ University, Melissa Westcott fell in love and followed her passion inland to Moranbah. Having worked across a range of educational and training initiatives in Moranbah and the Central Highlands, Melissa took the leap and started her own business, Big On Shoes. She then established TM3 Training Solutions in 2013 and Moranbah Blooms and Events in 2015. “Big on Shoes specialises in finding shoes for ladies with larger feet. I know too well the anxiety it causes not being able to find a nice pair of shoes to wear to a special occasion. The ability to constantly evolve both our retail and online stores has helped our business grow over the past nine years,” Melissa said. Melissa is also a passionate volunteer and encourages anyone to put their hand up and help an organisation in need. “I sit as a director on the boards of Moranbah Early Learning Centre, C-Res and the newly re-formed Greater Whitsunday Alliance. I love the fact that a group of people with a passion to make things better can work together to make an impact on the community,” she said. Outside of your businesses and volunteering, what do you do to keep a work / life balance? “With three young boys and footy season starting, I will be spending the weekends at football. We have just sold our farm which we have had for the last 10 years, so for the first time in a long time, we are going to be spending time at home with friends and barbecues.” Are there any women in business you gain inspiration from? “I admire Jane Cay, the founder of Birdsnest. I am amazed by what she has done from a small town and draw so much inspiration from her business and how she connects with customers.”

Originally from the land of ginger beer and rum, Jordan Sutcliffe moved to Mackay last year from Bundaberg. With surrounding fields of sugar cane, Mackay reminds her a lot of home. Her husband, an engineer, accepted a position to work on the Bruce Highway upgrade, bringing them both to Mackay for a change of scenery. Moving to a town away from family and friends was a daunting prospect for Jordan, who had lived in Bundaberg for 22 years.

With an enormous heart and a character which often puts others before herself, Wendy Barker is known throughout the Whitsundays for her volunteer contributions to the community. She has been a member of the SES for more than 20 years, leaning valuable skills such as land search, storm damage and more. She has also held numerous roles as part of the Whitsunday Relay for Life committee as well as a current state role as a coaching partner. This year she is assisting her husband, Andrew, chair the Relay for Life committee.

With previous experience as a pharmacy assistant and four years as an administration assistant, Jordan felt welcomed when she joined the Clarity Hearing Solutions team in Mackay.

“It is an event that is fulfilling to everyone who participates, a wonderful way to remember those we have lost to cancer and a positive way to raise funds for the fight against the disease,” she said.

What is your role at Clarity Hearing Solutions?

Wendy and Andrew also own a business on Main Street, Proserpine, AWB First Aid First. With her SES experience, Wendy has been passionate about training people to learn first aid skills. Her business specialises in providing quality training as well as first aid kit checks and event first aid.

“I am a business liaison and client services officer with responsibilities in administration and reception. It is a very rewarding position as it is patientfocused and gives me the opportunity to help people. I have really enjoyed becoming a part of the Clarity Hearing Solutions team.” What have you enjoyed most about moving to Mackay? “I love exploring the area, especially with the variety of places to go camping, 4wd tripping and motorbike riding. I love to swim and Mackay has some great pools to go to relax or exercise.”

What have been your most memorable and fulfilling volunteering moments? “One of the most rewarding accomplishments is receiving a 20 year service medal for SES. The most challenging, but also enjoyable, is helping teams and a community to come together to raise important funds for cancer research last year, raising over $50,000.” What do you enjoy in your spare time? “I love the outdoors and camping always look forward to June every year to head off to the Bowen River Camp Draft and Rodeo, often spending a week or more there. Family are my rock and I spend what spare time I have with them.”

WHITSUNDAY MAYOR ANDREW WILLCOX Whitsunday Regional Council is proud to support the Live, Shop and Buy local campaign showcased in this edition of Core Life. Council has already turned the focus on the Proserpine township area, with community consultation for a Future Growth Master Plan winding up at the end of February. Since becoming Mayor, I have engaged with a large section of the Proserpine community who are passionate about exploring opportunities to create economic stimulus for the town. A number of community workshops were held in January and February, and council operated a pop-up shop in Main Street to make it simple for all residents to submit their ideas. All ideas and input from the consultation, will be fed back to the internal working group and a draft Proserpine Master Plan will be designed. This draft master plan will then go out for further public feedback in May, as the last step to council adopting a final version in July/August. I urge everyone to put forward their views and contribute during the consultation stages, as the decisions we make today are aimed to ensure a bright future for the Proserpine community and future generations. Your Division 3 Councillor, John Collins, has been a strong advocate for Proserpine and in the last budget, Council secured almost $3million to upgrade the Proserpine Sewerage Treatment Plant and in December last year, completed a much needed $600,000 drainage upgrade of Main Street. Council then celebrated the completion of those works, prior to Christmas, by partnering with the Proserpine Rotary Club to sponsor a fireworks spectacular as part of the popular Xmas Fair in Main Street. Other smaller projects in the 2016-17 budget included the extension of the footpath on Faust Street and works in the beach park area at Conway Beach. Buying locally can make a huge difference to our local economy and community, as the smaller businesses have felt the impact of online shopping. More importantly living, shopping and buying locally supports local jobs and is an investment in our Whitsunday Region’s future. From the 74 tropical islands off Airlie Beach to the cracker barra fishing at Faust Dam, the stunning beach coves in Bowen and the outback Pit Pony experience at Collinsville, our region’s one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. If we don’t support local independent businesses who will? Use them or lose them.

ANNE EATON, MIDWIFERY MANAGER For the broader Whitsunday community, Proserpine is home to our local country hospital. It is a lifeline to our community with vast support facilities ranging from mental health services to the accident and emergency ward. It is also the place where mothers go to receive support, care and of course give birth. Anne Eaton is the Midwifery Manager at Proserpine Hospital, and ensures the smooth day-to-day operation of the maternity ward. When you meet Anne, you can feel the warmth of her caring nature and her strong, steady calm wash over you. She holds a presence that you know you would love to have by your side at a stressful time. Anne was born in Uganda and lived in Kenya throughout her childhood before completing her tertiary education in the UK. Her passion for midwifery comes from her own mother who was a midwife back in the day when you ‘called the midwife’. She would arrive with her black bag on the back of her bike, performing births at people’s homes within the community. Now with two grown-up children of her own, Anne understands the unique journey that children and their parents take together. She also understands the privilege her, and her team, have in supporting women and their partners, throughout their experience to become parents. She credits her staff in helping to mold “this little maternity ward into the model of care that we run today’. The Proserpine maternity ward delivers between 260 and 300 babies a year, almost one a day. As a rural hospital, back up is one and a half hours away in Mackay, so they have to be extremely resilient, thinking on their feet, with a steady foundation of multi-disciplinary teamwork.

As Aristotle once said “A midwife should have a lady’s hands, a hawks eyes and a lion’s heart.”

Anne is very proud of their ability to handle emergencies. One memorable experience was when a little 25-week-old baby decided he was not going to wait 40 weeks to make If you wish to fundraise for the maternity ward or would like to be a an appearance. He was delivered safely at Proserpine Hospital and monitored until the ‘voice of the community’ in their reference group, please contact retrieval team from Townsville picked him up. He is now one year old and doing well. Anne directly by emailing anne.eaton@health.qld.gov.au.

ST CATHERINE’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE THE FIRST BUILDINGS WHICH FORMED ST CATHERINE’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE, OR OUR LADY’S CONVENT SCHOOL AS IT WAS KNOWN THEN, OPENED IN APRIL, 1925. THE TIMBER SCHOOL WAS A HIGH BUILDING CONSISTING OF A CENTRAL ROOM WITH VERANDAHS AND THE FIRST YEAR COMMENCED WITH AN ENROLMENT OF 60 PUPILS. St Catherine’s Catholic College has seen a lot of changes over the years and enrolments have continued to increase. In 2012, a new campus was established to cater for increasing student enrolments and subsequently, secondary education was introduced in 2013. In 2017, the College’s growth has continued by offering from Kindergarten through to Year 12. St Catherine’s Catholic College is part of the Whitsundays Catholic Parish, which includes Proserpine, and the Whitsundays. The parish was founded in 1926, and today they have two churches. St Catherine’s is located in Proserpine and was built in 1957. It is a grand old church and is open for visits during working hours. The second church is St Martin’s at Cannonvale. It was opened in September 2002. This was an exciting project because it was built it in partnership with the local Lutherans. The church is also available to the Anglican Church and the Uniting Church, who hold services here every Sunday, bringing the denominations of the community together. St Catherine’s Catholic College is also a dedicated member of the Proserpine and broader Whitsunday community. They work in partnership with many local organisations and community events including TAFE, St Vincent de Paul, Lions, Zonta, Rotary, Whitsunday

Counselling, Reef Festival Parade, Community Christmas Carols, Whitsunday Markets, community fetes and flower shows. Their Year 5 and 6 students also visit the residents of the Proserpine Nursing Home every fortnight.

St Catherine’s Catholic College has been part of the Proserpine community since the early days and shows us how a school can grow within the community, and support its ideals, whilst offering a safe and nurturing environment for our children to grow.

WARREN WATTS

A LOOK INTO THE PROSERPINE WAY OF LIFE WOULD NOT BE COMPLETE WITHOUT SHOWCASING THE LOCAL FARMING COMMUNITY. WARREN WATTS IS A LOCAL FARMER, A MAN PASSIONATE ABOUT THE LAND AND HIS FAMILY.

Without the steady hand of the local farmer, Proserpine would not be the town it is. Warren’s family bought a cane farm in Proserpine just over ten years ago, so that his three children could be closer to a local school. Their previous property was near Collinsville and Warren’s wife, Donna, would drive 900km a week to take the kids to a 10 student school. Moving to Proserpine also meant his children could hang out with other kids more and, as a result, they have spent many happy years as part of the local Proserpine community. Warren and Donna run 800 head of cattle and farm 1300 acres of cane, producing over 46,000 tonnes of sugar cane a year. The cane season goes from June to November during which time Warren’s focus is the cane. The rest of the year is spent on maintenance jobs around the farm and looking after their cattle. He is one of the larger local famers in the area, yet only needs three full time staff, who are himself, his wife Donna and Steven Drinkwater. They also have their two casual, semi-retired cane farmers, who come with a wealth of knowledge in the industry. When the harvest begins the contractors are then employed to cut and cart the cane into cane sidings where they are dumped into cane bins, ready to be sent to the mill.

Warren believes the biggest challenge in the cane farming trade is getting the ‘variety’ of cane right. The varieties of sugar cane are cultivated in laboratories up and down the coast and over the years, Warren has experimented with many different varieties of cane. The experts are constantly working to refine the varieties of sugar cane to make each new variety produce the most amount of sugar, in the most efficient way possible, without succumbing to pests and diseases. As you can imagine, this is a difficult job. “This is the biggest battle” Warren says, “you get 5 or 6 years out of each crop, so it is important to get the right variety, as it can be costly if you don’t.” As we all know, farming can be a tumultuous industry. It is at the mercy of many outside factors like unseasonal weather, fluctuating market prices and the onset of pests and diseases. This makes it an extremely challenging job at times. Farming is also a craft that attracts resilient, good-hearted people who love the land and have shaped it into what it is today. Without the steady hand of the local farmer, Proserpine would not be the town it is.

THE LINNEWEBER BROTHERS FOR MANY, THE PROSERPINE SUGAR MILL REPRESENTS LOCAL INDUSTRY. IT CREATES THAT SWEET PUNGENT SMELL AT CRUSHING TIME AND IS THE DESTINATION FOR THE BRIMMING CANE TRAINS THAT RUN ALONGSIDE OUR HIGHWAYS. FOR, MATT AND ANDREW LINNEWEBER HOWEVER, THE MILL REPRESENTS A LIFE’S WORK, A ‘MILL COMMUNITY’ AND AN EXTENDED FAMILY.

Both men began their career at the mill as young apprentices straight out of school. In the first few years, the brothers worked alongside their father and uncle so there was no room for slacking off! They were also lucky to be trained by skilled workmates who were more than willing to impart their knowledge. As Andrew says, this mentoring culture still exists today. “Our workforce is a ‘mill community.’ It is welcoming to any young people and is a second home for some, an extension to their families.” Matt adds, “The mill is a good place for a young person to start their career as I believe that people who are trained in the sugar mill environment are highly regarded.” The working environment at the mill has kept the brothers busy and challenged for the last 17 years, nurturing and encouraging them to progress. After their apprenticeships,

they took time off to pursue further education in their chosen trades, before returning with new knowledge and skills, advancing their careers. Matt returned to the mill after completing an Associate Diploma of Electrical Engineering at CQU in Rockhampton. He has since worked his way up the ladder and is now an Electrical Engineer who is proud to have been involved in several major projects. Meanwhile, Andrew studied a Bachelor of Engineering of Technology full-time at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton before returning to the mill by accident for a threeweek contract that turned into 17 years! He is now Operations Engineer for the process house. The brothers are proud of their careers at the mill and look forward to spending many more years there. They attribute their success to the exceptional team environment and their longevity to the constantly evolving industry dynamics. The Proserpine Mill was bought by Wilmar Sugar in 2011. As well as maintaining the local workforce, Wilmar Sugar has continued to invest in apprentice training and employee development. Last year the Proserpine Mill crushed just over 2 million tonnes of cane. This was the first time it had surpassed the 2 million tonnes mark since 2005. The last bin was crushed in the early hours of Christmas morning. Well done to all involved.

TAILS FROM YOUR LOCAL VET There’s rarely a dull moment in the life of a vet surgery and sometimes it can be amazing! They say things happen in threes, and that’s exactly what happened this January at the Prossie Vets. Firstly, there was ‘Arlo’ on January 3rd. She was a beautiful young staffy. Usually full of beans, but now she was not like herself. She was very unwell. She hadn’t eaten for days and was vomiting. After stabilizing her with intravenous fluids, she still needed to be operated on, where we found half a rubber ball to be the culprit. She soon returned to her normal lovely nature, and left the clinic January 7th. Meanwhile, on January 5th, Turbo was brought in. He was sick with dehydration and inappetence and was very lethargic. We stabilised Turbo with a drip, and then, when a laparotomy was performed, we found a corncob. You could also see where he had had trouble with another corncob passing through his intestine sometime previously. He had a bad infection raging in his abdomen and needed another anesthetic, to lavage his belly, to help him get him back to normal. He left the clinic January 10th. Turbo is a working dog and much loved by his owners. Before Turbo left, however, Millie arrived on January 9th. Some of you will have read about Millie in the P.V.S ‘s latest news letter. She was another beautiful little staffy. Once she was stabilised, a laparotomy revealed a peach seed to be causing the blockage. The blockage was soon cleared and Millie recovered well and was able to go home January 14th.

Sometimes though, if the dogs can maintain hydration, with small amounts of water that doesn’t make them vomit, they can sometimes pass the problem blockage without veterinary intervention.

What a crazy, but beautiful week. Saving lives is an awesome feeling and is always a team effort. Yours,

Faye Elder

BYRON SMITH

WHEN BYRON SMITH LOST HIS LEG SUDDENLY IN A FREAK TRUCK ACCIDENT, HIS LIFE CHANGED FOREVER. A PREVIOUSLY ACTIVE MAN, THE NEWS WAS DEVASTATING. HE WAS FOUND QUICKLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT AT THE EDGE OF THE ROAD, IN SHOCK, AND CLUTCHING HIS DETACHED LEG. HAD HE NOT BEEN FOUND SO QUICKLY, BYRON ADMITS, HE WOULD NOT BE ALIVE TODAY. For most people the loss of a limb could easily lead to a life of self-pity. Byron, however, has a bright and positive character and instead, he sees himself as lucky. “I have lots to be thankful for really” He says, “Yes, I am missing a leg but I’ve still got my independence, body function, minimal scarring and no brain injuries. I’ve got nothing to whinge about really.” At first, Byron found getting back into the workforce tough. This however, didn’t stop him from believing in himself and following his dreams. One day Byron’s friend asked if he could get a lift down to Mackay for an appointment with an eye specialist. During the drive Byron realized this was a service many people in the community might want and could use. Byron saw a gap in the market. Driving trucks has always been a passion for Byron, stemming from when he drove trucks in the Army, so the idea of driving individuals to appointments was a perfect fit for his new business and lifestyle. Not one to jump head first into things, Byron conducted a lot of market research and the Proserpine Hospital kindly allowed him to leave research questions for their patients. Help from the local Proserpine business community did not stop there, however, and many businesses rallied around to do their part in making Byron’s dream come true.

The Commonwealth Bank provided finance, but more than that, they went above and beyond to help him get his business going. Ideal Placements helped Byron enroll in an NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) run by ‘My Pathway’ and Crossley Holden offered Byron ongoing vehicle wash support. On a broader level, the Whitsunday PCYC, Mackay City Volkswagon and Community Solutions in Cannonvale, were also key in helping Byron start his business. Byron has been operating Appointed Transport since February and is dedicated to getting his business off the ground. On top of appointment transfers he has already diversified his services to include an ‘Adventure Day Tour’ to Finch Hatton Gorge with forest flying ziplining and Eungella, all in one day. A self-confessed introvert, his new job allows bachelor Byron a social outlet as well as the opportunity to create a profitable business. Most of all though, it is an opportunity to offer a much needed service to the community and engage with other businesses who share his dream. If you need a lift to an appointment or would like to book a day tour with Byron call him on 0448 361 133. If you would like to find out how the NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) could help make your business dreams become a reality call ‘My Pathway’ on 07 4044 1060. www.corelife.com.au 25

GOOD NEWS

FOR THE LUCKY COUNTRY DESPITE THE PESSIMISM OF SOME, IT IS NOW OVER 25 YEARS SINCE OUR LAST RECESSION AND THE G.F.C. IS NOW A FADING MEMORY FOR MOST OF US AND UNLIKE MOST OF THE WORLD, AUSTRALIA HAS AVOIDED THE SEVEN YEAR ECONOMIC CYCLE. Some question whether our high level of performance relative to the rest of the world can continue with the end of the mining investment boom. Late last year commentator Alan Kohler said “It will be almost impossible for Australia to have a recession for at least 5 years, probably 10. Australia’s mining investment boom, which involved two years of $24 billion per quarter of capital expenditure for resources exports, is well and truly over, but it will definitely result in net export contributing at least 2% per annum to real GDP growth for 15-20 years” Treasury are predicting we will grow at 3% whilst most major banks agree with this, HSBC’s Paul Bloxham tips 3.4% and ANZ’s Richard Yetsenga tips 3.3%. Other good stats • The NAB business conditions index surged from +5.7 points to +11.4 points in December, a 6-month high. • The business confidence index rose from +5.5 points to +5.7 points. • The index of trading conditions in the NAB survey rose from +9.8 points to +20 points (a 9-year high); profitability rose from +5.7 points to +14.3 points (a two-year high). That looks like great news! • Australia posted a record trade surplus of $3,511 million in December, up from the $2,040 million surplus in November. • The CoreLogic Home Value Index of capital city home prices rose by 0.7% in January and was up 10.7% over the year. - STEVE TAYLOR DISCLAIMER: Steve Taylor & Partners Editorial is opinion and not advice. Make marketing a habit!

O su

T a o fa ru e li su

T

WHAT DO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNERS HAVE IN COMMON? THEY UNDERSTAND MARKETING IS EVERY PART OF THEIR BUSINESS, NOT ONLY THE ‘ATTRACTING’ THE NEW CLIENT DEPARTMENT. Marketing is your systems, your delivery, your appearance, your uniforms, the way you greet your clients, it is everything that you do, every single day! Unfortunately, marketing is often viewed in two ways. Either as a headache, not deserving of much of the business owner’s attention, or as a simple task you advertise, you get results, right? Wrong! I can hear you thinking back to a previously unsuccessful campaign… (You may have got results; however, it rarely happens that quickly unless you are succinct with your message and campaign or offering a crazy deal, something else which takes a little time and thought to nail!) Once a business owner recognises that marketing is the oxygen of every business, and that consistency and the delivery of your product or service is integral to not only your marketing but your business success, things become much clearer. If you aren’t sure where to start, start from here. What do your client’s want (not always need!)? What problems are they coming to you for you to solve?

Do you have a marketing plan, or even, more specifically, an ultimate goal for your business in the next, 3, 6, 12 months? Do you measure the success your marketing activities or even set goals to begin with? Can you see your customer’s profile (stereotype) in your mind’s eye and are you clear about what their pain points are? How can you solve them? Does everyone in your business sing the same song, give the same solutions and deliver the same messages? Ask yourself those questions, and consider the answers. Preempt customer’s requirements, and consider the results. Give your clients the same experience each, and every time they engage your business, the experience they have come to know and trust. Whether it is a haircut, a purchase from a retail outlet or a service provider, by doing so you are giving your clients the power to ‘know’ what they will get from you each, and every time, making their purchase decision easier to make. Think McDonalds…. Which leads to the next key marketing lesson… ‘Would you like fries with that?’ If you would like information or assistance with your marketing systems, campaigns and activities, shout! WHAT WOMEN DON’T WANT! On average women retire with roughly half as much super as men. (Source ABC 7-30 report April 2016) This disturbing fact is due to a combination of lower average wages, taking time out of the workforce or going part time to care for children and other family members and often being self-employed or running home based businesses. The problem is exasperated by the fact that women on average live much longer than men and therefor need more super to last through a longer retirement. There are various strategies women should discuss

with a financial planner to address this imbalance. There are rules in the super system to enable splitting of annual contributions from a higher earning spouse’s super account to the lower earners. This can only cover one year’s payments at a time so needs to be done annually. There are also significant government co-contribution incentives to encourage low income earners to make additional personal super contributions. If self-employed consider paying yourself the 9.5% super. Even paying yourself super on a wage of

$20,000 per year starting at an affordable $158 per month will accrue over $300,000 extra to retire on over 30 years. Also discuss whether your existing investment option is the right one for your personal situation. Spending a little time to take control and put some minor changes in place can lead to a much more independent retirement. For a free consultation on these or any other retirement planning issues contact Eclipse Financial Services on 49467359 today or visit www.eclipsefs.com.

2017is an exciting year to be a woman in business WE CAN HAVE IT ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL, AND THAT’S A BEAUTIFUL THING. While it can be argued that we still have a long way to go in terms of women’s rights, it’s important to acknowledge the progress which has been made to balance the power.

So what does that mean for us? We like to think that our girls of the future will grow up in a world where they believe they can achieve anything, and that’s a beautiful prospect.

The global economy is becoming a place where women are finding increasing success alongside their male counterparts, with many women CEO’s in the S&P 500. Run by young, ambitious and capable women, these role models in society take matters into their own hands, break the barriers of stereotype and pave the way for the girls of our future.

In this edition we embrace and celebrate women in our own backyard who dare to live the dream and strive to have it all. Business women, mentors, community champions, mother’s; in today’s world we no longer have to pick and choose, we can do it all or nothing at all, and that, my dear, is the point of equality.

Not only are women increasingly taking the top spots in global corporations, but also positions of power as world leaders. After UK Prime Minister David Cameron resigned, the short list for his successor came down to two names, both women: Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom, with May taking the top spot. With the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s power has been further enhanced. But these achievements haven’t come out of nowhere: women have been doing well in politics globally for years, including our own Julia Gillard and New Zealand’s two female Prime Ministers, Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark, Clark now the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme.

If the suffragettes of the late 19th Century could see the lives we lead now, their smiles would be as wide as the railings they once chained themselves upon in the name of creating a just future for the women of today. From Moranbah to Mackay, Airlie Beach and everywhere in between, the ladies in our Women in Business feature are making their mark on society in their own unique way. Lawyers, personal trainers, entrepreneurs, volunteers, doctors, chefs. These are the people who make up our community, the people who feed us, look after us, defend us and help us to become the best we can. This is our region, and these are some of the women who make it great.

Success is no accident. It takes hard work, perseverance, learning and most of all, passion for what you do. The Beach Club’s General Manager, Mel Saxon, is a shining example of what you can achieve with hard work. At the age of 15, living in rural south-east Queensland, her first job was as a ‘dishie’ at the local RSL Club. Her passion for the hospitality industry was instant. She heard stories about working in the world-famous Whitsundays and knew this was an opportunity for her to gain experience working in a world-class destination. Mel’s first position on Hamilton Island was as a receptionist at the Reef View Hotel. “To diversify my experience, I applied for multi-hire opportunities which allowed me to experience different aspects of hospitality, including bar work,” she said. While working on the island, Mel met her husband, Jared, and they moved to the Gold Coast for a short period of time. It wasn’t long before they missed Hamilton Island. “I returned as a front office supervisor at the Reef View Hotel. This role was the catalyst for my progression into hotel management and I worked my way up the ranks between the Reef View Hotel and Beach Club. “Jared also felt the allure of working in hotel management and is now the general manager of the Reef View Hotel. We love being able to work just across the road from each other.” As general manager of the Beach Club, Mel believes the key to success is her team. “It is vital to ensure my team are not only motivated and happy, but invested in the culture of our business. Being a smaller resort, I am able to spend considerable time directly with my team and like to ensure they understand not just the ‘the how’ of what we do, but ‘the why.’ “The most common sentiment from our guests is that during their stay with us they felt relaxed and welcomed by the staff and that nothing was too much trouble,” Mel said. Making the Beach Club and other Hamilton Island resorts accessible to locals is a priority, with the island offering locals rates year-round, for anyone residing from Port Douglas to Gladstone. Standby rates are bookable within 72 hours and start from $306pp, per night for the Beach Club and come with a host of extras, including daily breakfast, return ferry transfers, hotel transfers from the marina, a VIP chauffeur service, unlimited use of a range of water equipment and much more. Take a dip in Beach Club’s exclusive infinity-edge pool or simply relax and take in the view. This is paradise unlimited and it’s on your doorstep waiting to be explored.

“Life should be chic,

c,

With flair for the fabulous and passion for panache, The Lilac House co-owner, Mignone Brechin, created a space in Mackay where people could discover high-end affordability in furnishings and fashion. “The Lilac House was created from the belief that creating a beautiful space around one’s self, is a key component to working towards being and feeling fabulous. We love design, love individuality and love that each piece tells a story of who you are,” Mignone said. The Lilac House was established with her mother, Madonna, with amazing support from Madonna’s husband, Lance. “Mum is the backbone of the business. She takes care of the accounts, restocking, sourcing exciting wholesalers and anything that needs attention. Mignone’s sister, Madison, keeps a watchful eye on public media and brings fresh ideas for promotions; while their brother, Cole, Uncle David and Mignone’s partner, Trent, helped with the shop fitout. “We have always had a passion for décor and fashion. The Lilac House was born from our vision. After receiving a fantastic response from our online store, we decided to make The Lilac House tangible and opened our store in Mackay. We worked together as a family to promote the business and we couldn’t be happier with how the business has blossomed,” Mignone said.

The Lilac House prides itself on stocking unique pieces from within Australia and overseas. “We want everyone to have pieces that won’t be seen anywhere else. Individuality is the main goal and we will continue to strive toward that. We have some gorgeous fashions labels at present, Ministry of Style, Fresh Soul, Cooper St, Humidity and more gorgeous items to come, including a new children’s label for fashion and décor. Describing herself as flamboyant, Mignone graduated with a degree in acting from Brisbane, returning to Mackay to be with her partner. She has been living with severe OCD since she was young and started blogging as a way to share her journey and help others. “I started blogging about mental health and coping mechanisms at ‘Freaky Eve Life Style Warrior’ and it still remains to be a huge passion of mine,” she said. No stranger to hard work, Mignone is a legal clerk for a family business and is also currently studying nutrition. If you see her wearing something fabulous, chances are it will be from The Lilac House. Create the perfect lifestyle with gorgeous items for the home and body. The Lilac House is located on MacAlister Street, Mackay, ready to inspire and excite.

AIRLIE NORTON

In years gone by, the protectors of the neighbourhood were our neighbours. People you could rely on to keep a watchful eye over your home while you were away. They knew you and your family, knew the local area, and were ‘just down the road’ when you needed them. Ogilvy Properties was founded on those same values. To offer personalised boutique property management services, to care for your investment, and be there when you call. With 15 years of property management experience, Airlie Norton had identified a gap in the market. This gap was a property management agency, whose sole dedication was toward maximising the return of investment property, while also caring for that investment. Along with business partners, Jack Purtell and Patrick Manning, the trio founded Ogilvy Properties to offer the boutique level of service often missing from traditional property agencies. “We are geared differently and do not have a sales department. We have no underlying drive to sell our clients’ property in order to generate a commission. Rental investments shouldn’t be treated as the ‘poor cousins’ of property and become secondary to sales. They require a high level of experience and dedication to be managed to their full potential,” Airlie said.

Rather than purchasing a rental roll, Ogilvy’s property growth has been organic, allowing Airlie to prioritise her time accordingly, as both a senior property manager and business owner. “As a business owner, the first two years were daunting as capital expenditure was greater than initial profits, but we knew we had to be patient. The focus for us has always been on providing the service we initially promised, and adapting the business as we have grown to continue offering a boutique experience,” she said. Airlie is expanding her services to include being a buyer’s agent, to aide purchasers in obtaining the right property for their investment requirements, but the main focus of the business will continue to be property management. Outside of the business, Airlie is a wellknown singer, performing at many local and regional establishments with a number of bands, including Undercover. She is looking forward to new musical adventures this coming year with another band. For hands-on, business-class management of your property, seek the services of Ogilvy Properties for the care and attention you would expect from those with a vested interest in your property.

When life knocks you down, you need to get up, dust yourself off, and keep fighting. No stranger to throwing a solid punch, Amy Collins competed in last year’s Airlie Fight Night. Although she didn’t take the win, the kickboxing Mum says that she learnt a lot about herself, her dedication, and her ability to rise above challenges. Amy found her passion for fitness after becoming a young mum at 21. As a way of overcoming personal injuries, she expanded her knowledge of movement and exercise rehabilitation, and found a unique training style tailored to her needs. “It was when my son Eli, was one that I decided to chase a career in the fitness industry, and completed my Certificate III and IV in Fitness. “Health and fitness, to me, is so much more than Instagram celebrities or bodybuilding competitions. It is every movement that we make every single day. Being physically fit opens a whole new world of opportunity; being able to keep up with your children, assist with mental health issues, improve mobility and relieve the aches and pains associated with ageing or injuries,” she said. Amy initially took a position as a personal trainer, but with a one-year-old son, the timing wasn’t right for her to focus on a career. When she was ready to return to the industry, Amy had to decide between joining a gym as an instructor or taking the plunge into business herself.

“My parents had suggested a private at-home studio so I decided to offer an intimate, and personalised environment, to help others achieve their goals. I created WOLF Training, which stands for Way of Life, as fitness and wellbeing should be a part of everyday life. “Having suffered most of my 20’s from injuries and back problems, I found myself altering my training to more functional movements; focusing on core strength, correct postural alignment, muscle imbalances, and injury management. “The training I offer is based on conditioning the metabolism to effectively lose weight or gain muscle, tailored to a client’s goals so they feel more comfortable in their own skin. I am passionate about transformations, and helping people achieve sustainable results and a new healthy life for themselves and their family,” Amy said.

I have just started making each Sunday all about adventures with my little family, and we have already uncovered some unknown gems.

Q: Where is your favourite travel destination?

Q: Why do you love being a lawyer?

A:

A:

I recently came back from a holiday in Europe and the highlight was seeing the Northern Lights in Sweden.

Q: What is something that most people don’t know about you? A:

I worked as a dance teacher for nearly 6 years whilst studying at university. I would spend at least three hours every Saturday morning teaching tiny tots how to point their toes and listening to the Wiggles.

Q: What changes would you like to see for women in the future? A:

I hope that in the future there doesn’t have to be a discussion about “women” in the workplace. Everyone has a right to decide what career path they take, and gender shouldn’t make any difference.

Every day is different; you literally don’t know what your day will bring when you walk into work in the morning. My usual day includes court appearances, conferences, and client meetings. I am passionate about giving people the tools they need to help themselves and to achieve the result they are seeking.

Q: What makes you proud? A:

Every morning on the drive to school my son displays some awesome dance moves while he thinks I’m not watching. It is the best start to my day.

Family-owned construction company, McNeill Building, understand that a home is not only an investment, but also a memory maker. Born and bred in the Whitsundays, Kylie Gartrell grew up watching her parents build many of the surrounding homes which fill our community today. Her parents, Ross and Trish McNeill, started McNeill Building when Kylie was 4 years old, instilling in her an ethos of hard work, commitment and a business-sense which would see her start her own business, a café, at age 23. Prior to her leap into business, Kylie lived abroad in Switzerland for one year and in London for three. As a Mum of two young boys, most of her spare time is dedicated to filling their own home full of memories, but once they are older, she hopes to reignite her passion for travel and see more of the world. Soon after her return to the Whitsundays, Kylie and her husband, Martin, invested in her parent’s building business, a move which would see them both working for McNeill Building in later years. “My heart was in the family business, I sold my café so I could look after the administration and

marketing for McNeill Building. I am currently studying a Diploma of Building Design so I can assist clients in designing their new home from scratch and have also finished CAD training in Melbourne and Sydney to produce visual design in 3D,” Kylie said. An exciting addition to the type of construction which McNeill Building can now offer is due to a specialist machine which can manufacture Truecore steel frames. This means each steel frame is bespoke to the build. Kylie is trained in designing the steel frame layouts for their building projects. “Our software is very detailed, allowing me to add in all of the design features for clients at the preliminary stages to make for a streamlined build process. It results in a highly detail-orientated end product which is only possible when constructing in steel,” she said. The advantages of steel frame construction are numerous. The frames are resistant to termites and mould, the higher strength can make them stronger in high winds and earthquakes, the lighter weight can result in less stress on foundations and it exceeds fire safety standards. Domestic and commercial, a McNeill construction is one which is built to last. Their office is located at the Whitsunday Business Centre in Cannonvale.

Mez Bowen

BRIGHT EYES AIRLIE BEACH

Having a bright outlook on life, even after the cloudiest of days, means you’ll always see the world through rose-tinted glasses. Mary Bowen (Mez) and her husband Murray (Muzz) have a love which reads like a fairytale. But like all classic love stories, they have faced their fair share of cloudy days along the way. They met at age 11, were buddies through school, Muzz even taught Mez how to drive when she turned 16. They fell in love, eloped to Hamilton Island and were married on One Tree Hill in 2012, a leap year, on February 29. Forging ahead with their careers, having a family wasn’t part of the plan for the newlyweds and was not something they had prepared themselves for. A roller coaster of emotions followed when Mez fell pregnant unexpectedly. Their darling daughter, Piper, burst into the world full of sunshine and smiles on April 14, 2016. The road to motherhood was full of challenges for Mez. She and Murray both worked in the mines, Mez as a truck driver and a member of the Emergency Rescue Team while Muzz is an open cut examiner. Seeking a change, Mez jumped at the opportunity to purchase a business in Airlie Beach and became the owner operator of Bright Eyes Airlie Beach in 2015. “A week before we took over, after the contracts had gone unconditional we found out I was pregnant with Piper,” Mez said. She commented “Our biggest challenge has been the distance. Going from working and living together every moment of our lives to spending every other week apart. It’s been difficult because we are that nerdy couple who love spending time together. Building up the business while I was pregnant with Muzz away half of the time in the mines, then working and mummying by myself has been really challenging and stressful. Family life is hectic but we wouldn’t change it for the world.” Bright Eyes is Australian-owned, bringing world-leading performance and fashion brands to Airlie Beach. The safety and performance requirements are rigorous to ensure you and your family have protection from Queensland’s harmful UV radiation. Open seven days per week, Bright Eyes is located near Airlie’s main beach at Shop 8, 287 Shute Harbour Rd. Mez will ensure you receive the right glasses for the task at hand, so you can enjoy the brightest of days ahead.

Narm Akers

CAFÉ 22

A simple family routine can often bring back the most cherished of memories. As a young girl growing up in Thailand, Narm Akers dreamed of owning her own café. She watched her Mum get delight from drinking coffee and this is where her passion for coffee started. Narm spent most of her life in Bangkok before moving to Airlie Beach 10 years ago to be with the love of her life. The couple have two sons; Jake who is 7 and Flynn who is 5. “It was the hardest decision of my life, to move away from my home country for love, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. My boys are gorgeous,” she said. Narm has been the owner of Café 22 in Proserpine for the past two and a half years, after purchasing it from a good friend when they decided to sell the business. After moving to Australia, she studied hospitality, so her passion for starting her own café, plus her knowledge of food, made the café an excellent fit. She has put her own touches into the menu, as well as incorporating her love of art into the business. “Before I had children, I would enjoy grafting and painting. I graduated in industrial design, so art is a big passion of mine. We display art from local artists within the café, to give it a local touch and to help our local artists showcase their work,” Narm said. Focusing on consistently great coffee has gained Café 22 a favourable reputation with locals and visitors alike. The homemade specials board is another local favourite, as it is updated with daily surprises, freshly made. “I believe that fresh is best. I enjoy preparing nutritious options for people and I love creating salads. Our range of salads is something else we have become known for. Our Thai Beef Salad is one of our most popular options as well as out H.A.R.T meals,” Narm said. With a warm, homely interior and intimate nook with comfy couches, Café 22 is the perfect place to catch up with friends, gather as a group, or grab a coffee on the run. Located on Main Street in Proserpine, you’ll stay for the ambience and return for the great food.

Skye Msaro AVAIA HAIR

Avaia – an appreciation for many beautiful and refined aspects of life. True to the name, Avaia Hair is an elegantly refined salon, nestled in the heart of Mackay’s CBD, where beauty and relaxation is secondnature. Owner, Skye Msaro, first began her hair apprenticeship at 18 and now has more than 21 years of experience to her name. She established Avaia in 2011, creating the kind of environment she would want to be welcomed into if she were a client. “A salon experience should be cherished. A relaxing massage on arrival followed by an extensive beverage menu, divine Shiatsu massage chairs, a hot towel after colours and invigorating head massage. We want people stepping out onto the street looking fantastic and feeling amazing,” she said. Skye’s philosophy in business, and in life, is “The art of living is giving.” She promotes positivity in her workplace and is passionate about supporting both her local community and humanity. “I try to be inspiring and motivating to others, I believe that by being that I become that. I believe in self-development and have been inspired greatly by Tony Robbins. I enjoy connecting with like-minded and empowering women, it’s important to build one another up rather than tearing each other down. I’m passionate about supporting other women to be the best they can be,” she said. In 2014, Skye travelled to Africa to conquer its highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. She raised $10,000 for Suluhisho, a children’s orphanage in Kenya and spent time volunteering at the orphanage after her climb. Little did Skye know, she was about to meet the love of her life, Msaro, on the mountain. He was one of the mountain guides and it was instant love. Msaro moved to Australia to be with Skye and they were married in 2015. The couple would love to give back to his home nation by starting their own orphanage to provide care for children living in poverty. While at home, Skye makes time to explore her own backyard. “Cape Hillsborough, Finch Hatton and Eungella, it’s all just so beautiful. There’s so much to see and do and so much beauty all around. We’re very lucky to have it all here. Being in nature grounds me, it’s my time to reset and refresh,” she said. Gillian Hogben ALLURE LASER AND SKIN STUDIO

Tattoos are forever? Well, they used to be, but with advancements in laser removal, that faded dolphin that looks more like a sad trout can be removed more effectively than ever before. According to a study by McCrindle research in 2016, 19 percent of Australians have at least one tattoo, and surprisingly, more females than males are now inked at 24 percent. The rising trend of getting ink is also resulting in a rising trend of tattoo removal, with ex-lover’s names at the top of the list for getting scrubbed. Co-owner of Allure Laser and Skin Studio, Gillian Hogben, explains how Spectra Tattoo Removal is revolutionising the tattoo removal industry through effective results. “Using a Q-Switch laser, we can remove both black and multicoloured ink under the skin’s surface. This state-of-the-art technology produces both safe and effective results. It’s important to consult a trained laser technician to achieve the best results.” Gillian owns Allure Laser and Skin Studio with her husband, Dr. Richard Hogben, who is recognised as a leader in the cosmetic medicine industry. Gillian is a registered nurse with vast experience in cosmetic medicine, from treatments such as injectables through to laser hair removal. As the owner, Gillian no longer performs these treatments, but stays up to date with advancements in the industry to keep staff fully trained through education and training. Excited about turning 50 this month, Gillian is looking forward to a welldeserved break with her husband, Richard. “I know he has a surprise vacation planned but I don’t know any more than that. When you love what you do, motivation doesn’t become a factor in determining your fate. Personal Trainer and figure athlete, Kaz O’Brien, gets as much enjoyment from the success of her clients as she does from achieving her own goals. She has recently joined the Airlie Fitness team after moving closer to Airlie Beach and is a contract personal trainer and group fitness instructor. “Being a contractor makes you look at ways to evolve your business, finding where the demand is within the establishment, and offering that service. Like any business, evolving to meet demand is key. I’m enjoying the businesses which Corey and Wendy have set up around Airlie Fitness, the atmosphere and members are great!” As both a business woman and mother, Kaz believes that children grow up as a product of their environment and encourages her son to join her on training sessions. “My son has recently started to train at Airlie Fitness to build his strength and endurance for go-kart racing. He gets up at 5:30am to come boxing with mum and spend time with one of his best mates. Airlie Fitness has been great at working my classes around getting our daughter to her dance classes after school. It takes preparation and time management, but it is rewarding to see our children achieving great things, while still allowing time for myself, to work on my personal goals and career.”

Kaz competes in natural bodybuilding competitions as a figure competitor and was selected to join the Australian Natural Bodz Team in Las Vegas last year. “It was an amazing experience. I went there with the goal to step on stage in the best condition of my life and was ecstatic and surprised to hear my name called as a winner. I placed second in Figure America Classic and was honored to be a part of a dedicated team of athletes. “I’m in the process of building for further conditioning, which entails a higher calorie count to build muscle, and training is currently five days per week. My next competition will be toward the end of the year,” Kaz said. In conjunction with Airlie Fitness, Kaz and the team are launching a six-week challenge, incorporating small group training, a healthy eating plan and fitness training plan. Bookings for this challenge are essential. Contact Kaz and the team at Airlie Fitness and make this year the year you dedicate more time to look after you.

“When you are stressed is when good nutrition becomes most important, yet a lot of people find it difficult to prepare wholesome meals when they are at their busiest. You are what you eat, so if you fuel your body with nutritious food, you will feel much better during this hectic time.”

Hayley Firman

SLICE OF NATURE

This is the philosophy which saw Hayley Firman establish Slice of Nature, a food box service delivering nutritious recipe ingredients direct to your door. With a passion for health and fitness, Hayley sees every meal as an opportunity to nourish and fuel the body. She worked in a raw health food café and discovered that you didn’t have to compromise on taste to eat wholesome food. She started formulating nutritious food plans for people who wanted to eat healthier, but either didn’t know where to start or didn’t have the time to plan their meals. “I wanted to make healthy living easier and more accessible to everyone, which is why I started Slice of Nature’s Wholesome Food Box,” she said. Slice of Nature’s mission is to make dinner time a relaxing and healthy experience offering seasonal recipes and produce to inspire a healthier lifestyle. The weekly food box delivers pre-portioned and packaged ingredients direct to your door, complete with inspiring healthy recipes to follow. It takes away the stress of having to plan meals, but leaves you with the joy of cooking for your family while learning the fusion of new and exciting flavours. “No matter how busy you are, you can easily nourish your body with healthy meals from Slice of Nature. Our food boxes can be catered to gluten and dairy intolerant, vegan, vegetarian and meat eating people. What you won’t find in our food is processed products or refined sugars,” Hayley said. Hailing from the North Island town of Napier in New Zealand, Hayley was drawn to the Whitsunday beach and boating lifestyle, as it was similar to the water-orientated upbringing she had, just with better weather. With her boyfriend, Brodie and their dog, Nara, the couple love spending time in the outdoors, camping at Eungella Dam; although Hayley claims she can out-fish Brodie every time! With a delivery service covering the greater Whitsunday area, including Mackay and Bowen; it’s never been easier to take good care of yourself, with nutritious meal planning from Slice of Nature.

Helen Scott and Caroline Murray PALM BAY RESORT

Fringed by sparkling turquoise water, lined by soft white sand and enveloped by lush tropical gardens; a vacation at Palm Bay Resort feels like pure paradise. But as Helen Scott explains, taking on the rejuvenation of a resort which had been closed for three years prior, was far from a heavenly experience. “My partner, Daryl, purchased the resort in 2013. It had been closed for three years after Cyclone Yasi, the GFC and a downturn in tourism had made the running of the resort a financial impossibility. “In many ways, taking over a business which had been left in disarray was more challenging than starting one from scratch. “Rebranding took a couple of years but persistence paid off and we now attract guests from all over the world. The most difficult market to educate has been the local market who still think that we are closed!” she said. 50 www.corelife.com.au

of Palm Bay Resort, where she has now been for two years, while continuing her paramedic studies.

“Daryl’s business is in Melbourne so in the early days I spent a lot of time commuting. As the resort increased its revenue we were able to hire a General Manager. I was fortunate enough to find Caroline who, with her thirty or more years of experience in the hospitality business, has been a real asset to Palm Bay. She treats the business as if it is her own and assists me greatly with her wealth of knowledge about the industry,” Helen said.

“Running an island resort is much different to running a business on the mainland, you have to be organised and know all aspects of hospitality as well as maintenance. The medical knowledge is also handy to have being on an island too,” Caroline said.

Palm Bay Resort’s general manager, Caroline Murray, moved to Australia from Scotland, where she had been a general manager of a ski resort. She spent five years as a food and beverage manager at an Airlie Beach resort, when she left to study to be a paramedic. Helen approached her to offer her the general manager position

With Caroline’s expertise, Helen has been able to spend more time at home with Daryl, on their Mornington Peninsula farm. “I love nature and natural settings and the farm and Palm Bay give me wonderful sense of balance between country and ocean,” Helen said. Organically positioned as a secluded destination for couples, Palm Bay Resort is the ideal location for a romantic escape, intimate wedding or exclusive corporate retreat. With one foot in the corporate world and another in health in wellness, Elizabeth (Eli) McIntosh demonstrates that a healthy balance can be achieved, no matter the demands placed on daily life. As co-owner of the GP Superclinic Group with her husband, John, her day is often a blend of corporate meetings, staff training and product development but will also include forms of yoga and meditation. Eli and John’s relationship has also formed the perfect business partnership. As a doctor, John looks after the medical requirements, whereas Eli with her spa and yoga background looks after the aesthetic business, eXQisit You as well as systems, processes and HR for the Superclinics. “I conduct a lot of the culture training for the organisation, where we focus predominantly on the leaders, which we call our ‘heads of state.’ We implement a very positive culture and encourage our management team to be ‘authentic leaders’ from a trademarked programme we created called Positive Mindfulness Cognition. Not only do we hope for our managers to be authentic leaders, but also authentic people both at work and home to pass the positivity on to others surrounding them,” Eli said. As well as being a Reverend, Eli has been a yoga teacher for more than 27 years. Throughout this time she has travelled across many parts of Asia, learning spiritual techniques encompassing health and healing. She is excited to be developing a range of wellness products under the brand name, Eli, to share some of the exciting discoveries she has made on her travels. “It’s about enhanced living every day. The line includes a relaxation eye pillow which is a tension-buster, Himalayan salt lamps to reduce the day’s stress, organic teas for detoxing, sleeping well and nourishing the skin, plus bath teas which the skin will absorb the properties externally; as well as a range of yoga and active wear,” Eli said. The wellness range blend seamlessly with two health retreats Eli is currently in the process of opening. The first is in Lombok, Indonesia. “The wellness retreat gives guests the opportunity to stay at the retreat and receive a full suite of beauty and health services; from dermal fillers to yoga, skin treatments, natural healing and more. It’s about feeling rejuvenated, feeling relaxed and looking great. A soothing wellness experience so you actually go home looking and feeling like you’ve had a holiday.”

“The true meaning of spa has been lost. It’s not sticking your feet in water and getting your nails painted. It’s authentic healing treatments which were once only performed by doctors or priests. We are bringing 5000 year old techniques from healers we met through Asia, Tibetan hot stone rituals, oil dripping on the third eye and other authentic treatments which allow the body to heal itself from within,” Eli said. Eli and John are also in the process of setting up drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, both locally, nationally and internationally as well as an elite sports training gym which they hope to franchise and expand internationally. In a world where feeling unwell is now considered normal in western society, Eli’s hopes to bring a sense of the east to Mackay, to help people achieve the unthinkable in a www.corelife.com.au state of relaxation and wellness. 51

Behind the smile of a pretty woman is the underlying confidence of someone who feels beautiful. Often, all it takes to spark a little confidence, is a set of luxurious lingerie. Now, ladies, don’t get us wrong, the ‘Bridget Jones’ panties have their place in every underwear drawer, but if they are sneaking into your repertoire every day of the week, it’s time to contact the ladies from Pretty Woman Lingerie. The luxury lingerie business was established initially by Colleen Malcolm and her business partner and friend, Glenda Peterson (not in photo). “The business concept came about through various women in the area commenting on the fact that there was no local businesses available where women could buy good quality lingerie at an affordable price. “Glenda and I decided it would be a good idea to start a small business that could provide what women were asking for,” Colleen said. Colleen’s daughter, Pagan, soon joined the business as a sales consultant when she discovered her technical prowess would help the business to establish a solid online presence. “I initially started with developing Pretty Woman Lingerie’s website, then I discovered there was a lot more technology wise I could help with,” Pagan said. Pagan is currently developing her coding skills so she can build more technologically advanced websites and possibly apps for their own business and others. She is a published author and keeps busy writing novels, maintaining her blog and creating writing workshops which she hopes to present in the near future. Pretty Woman Lingerie promotes elegance, grace and sexy lace; providing a range of lingerie, sleep wear, swim wear, shape wear, hosiery and dresses to compliment your curves. “Our aim is to provide beautiful products for women of all ages and sizes. Our products are top quality, affordable and sizes available range from small to xxxx large. We believe that every woman has the right to feel beautiful. Feedback from clients has been fabulous,” Colleen said.

The majority of Pretty Woman Lingerie’s business comes from online orders, but the ladies also offer a party plan option for ladies in the Whitsundays, giving clients the opportunity to see and try on products before purchasing. With two businesses, three children and regular commutes between Brisbane and Airlie Beach, Carolyn Lewis is the definition of a high-flying business woman. “During school terms, I spend approximately five days per fortnight in Airlie Beach and the rest of the time in Brisbane. During school holidays, our family moves to our Airlie Beach property. You get quite used to the commute; it is a quick flight and I live only 10 minutes from the airport in Brisbane. The check in staff at Virgin know me by name, and also by the unusual items I take to oversized baggage. One of the more interesting items was a jet ski seat! You don’t realise how big it is until you walk through an airport with one,” Carolyn said. Carolyn’s background is in marketing and business development. One of her businesses, IMC Mining, performs in the resource sector, while her other, Ocean Dynamics, relies on a strong tourism market.

t g

The concept for Ocean Dynamics arose while Carolyn and her family were holidaying on their Riviera boat in the Whitsundays and were asked if it was available for charter. They had the vision to combine their love of the water with a niche in the market and built their first boat to survey, a Riviera 47 named Ocean Magic.

d n

When it comes to designing and sailing vessels, the Lewis’s know their stuff. Carolyn’s husband, Stewart, has competed in 11 Sydney to Hobart yacht races and is an avid sailor.

“Our largest boat, Ocean Free, is a 60 foot Maritimo; which is an Australian-built boat designed to withstand conditions far worse than you experience in the Whitsundays.” The charter business is renowned for delivering five star luxury experiences with service to match. A strong proportion of its business comes from repeat custom. “There is nothing quite like being there when a guest sees Whitehaven Beach or a giant Mauri Wrasse for the first time. The addition of our jet ski fleets at both O&O Hayman Island and Port of Airlie have added an additional adventure item to the product offering,” Carolyn said. Carolyn is also a pilot and dabbled in aerobatics when she was younger. Her sense of adventure is still alive and well, one of her favourite parts of the business is getting out of the office and being a jet ski guide for the day. Day charters, overnight charters, boutique whale watching excursions or a jet ski adventure; Ocean Dynamics delivers the essence of the Whitsundays through bespoke charter adventures.

Our vision is one of the greatest gifts we are blessed with at birth, but we often take this precious ability for granted.

2010. She moved to Airlie Beach in 2013 to start Specsavers Cannonvale with Laura Goodridge.

Brisbane. She joined Specsavers Cannonvale at the end of 2015 as her first clinical role outside of university and is mentored by Fiona.

As Optometrist and partner of Specsavers Cannonvale, Fiona Barrett explains, even those of us with fantastic eyesight should book regular eye examinations.

Laura started working for Specsavers in Plymouth in the United Kingdom in 2007 and has worked in optics continuously since. She founded Specsavers Cannonvale with Fiona as the retail partner, specialising in retail management, store operations, staff and spectacle dispensing excellence. She and Fiona both have wider roles within the Specsavers group, Laura as a consultant on optical frames as a member of the Frame User Group and Fiona as a member of the Leading Optometry Partner Forum.

“Annie has proven herself to be an excellent clinician, with high professional standards and ability to therapeutically treat some eye diseases,” Fiona said.

“Everybody should have their eyes checked every two years, even if they feel their vision is fine. This uncovers a surprising number of unknown vision problems. It is also important to screen for diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, which often have no symptoms in early stages,” she said. Fiona graduated with a BSc in Optometry form Cardiff University in 2002 and became a Member of the UK College of Optometry in 2003. She practiced as an optometrist with Specsavers in the United Kingdom and moved to Australia in

To be able to offer sight testing seven days per week, Fiona and Laura employed a second full-time optometrist, Annie Lee. Annie qualified with a Master of Optometry from QUT,

In most cases, an eye check can be performed without any out-of-pocket expenses. Specsavers Cannonvale offer bulk-billed sight testing, available seven days a week. This includes a full health check of the eyes with free digital retinal photography; screening for eye diseases including glaucoma and macular degeneration. Diabetic screening is also available. Tenacity, positivity and perseverance; when you’re up against well-known community identities, this is what will get you through. That and a lot of hard work. In her first two years of real estate, Stephanie Bacon admits that the going was tough, but credits the ability to think laterally plus a strong work ethic and optimism for getting her through. “I have always been an eternal optimist and once I put my mind to something I won’t stop until I make it happen. I joined Ray White in 2012. A family-owned, Australian business which started from humble beginnings, its values and culture resonated with me. I have been fortunate to have wonderful mentors guide me through my career to become the driven and enthusiastic agent I am today,” she said. Originally from Geraldton, Western Australia, Stephanie has called the Whitsundays home for the last 10 years. Only a couple of months after making the move, it was more than the weather and landscape she fell in love with. “I was out for drinks with friends and this guy walked past and put something in my hair! I pulled it out and it was a

small purple butterfly clip. I got talking to him and it turned out his 3-year-old niece, Karla, had given him the hair clip and he promised her he would give it to a special girl that night. “On the morning of our wedding he sent me a white gold and diamond butterfly to wear in my hair. We now have a 7-year-old, Taj, who is the light of our life! As a family, Luke, Taj and I love to go reef fishing or take the dirt bikes out,” Stephanie said. As a real estate agent, Stephanie’s philosophy is to be authentic and truthful. “When you sell someone’s home, they are putting their number one asset, their property, in your hands. It’s not a responsibility I take lightly, so I ensure I do the best job I can for those vendors. “It’s also important to stay current. Most buyers today are techsavvy, researching properties on their smart phones. I embrace technology and acknowledge the new generation of buyers do things differently. Online and social media now play a big part in the industry, so by recognising recent trends, I can market my vendor’s property to a greater market share.” Cheerful and driven, let Stephanie and the team at Ray White Whitsundays show you how their personalised service can make the difference in the sale of your property. www.corelife.com.au

While studying at university, she dreamed of working on the Great Barrier Reef and 18 years ago, Tolita Dukes realised her dream when she settled in the Whitsundays.

IT’S WHERE WE LIVE

“My husband and I travel quite a bit, but every time we fly back into Hamilton Island - the sight takes our breath away. There is no comparison to that stunning view, that incredible water colour and the lifestyle here, we love it,” Tolita said. It’s this passion for the region which inspired her to share this wonderful place with the world by publishing her first book, in collaboration with friend and photographer, Craig Hempstead. Aptly named, Where We Live Airlie Beach, the book is a collection of breathtaking photography and positive affirmations which create a spectacular showcase of the Whitsundays. A book which the people who live here can proudly share, stating “It’s where we live!” As the creator of 8 Seconds Marketing, Tolita is constantly inspired by her clients, the many tourism operators in the Whitsundays who work tirelessly to promote the region. Inspired to create fresh and new image library to represent the region, Tolita and Craig set about capturing the region in pictures. “As a passionate local, I wanted Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays to be reflected for what it now is, a sophisticated cosmopolitan village that offers so many unique experiences. Our town is more polished than ever before, I felt that the only way to showcase its chic appeal was to capture people and places in a brand new light.” While producing the book was an absolutely wonderful experience, Tolita says her greatest joy and personal reward, is the pride it has brought to the many locals who were involved in the production. “Watching locals flick through the book and smile proudly, as they connect with the images and places in the pages, really is a joy. Watching their face light up as they reminisce, the photography rekindling their own fond memories of each spectacular location. You begin to realise just how much Airlie Beach means to them, their home,” she said. The beautifully constructed pictorial, Where We Live, can be purchased online at www.itswherewelive.com.au, or connect with Tolita at 8 Seconds Marketing at 230 Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach.

FISH D’VINE D’VINE CATERING & EVENTS No stranger to dishing up plates of perfection to hungry diners, chef and co-owner of Fish D’vine, Rebecca Clark, is also serving a feast of knowledge to enthusiastic foodies. ‘The Food Junkie’ Bec’s master classes give weekend warriors and budding chefs alike, the opportunity to cook with the guidance of one of the Whitsunday’s most acclaimed chefs, learning tips, tricks and mouthwatering tastes. “The art and joy of cooking is a skill I believe everyone should have. The delight to create a meal for family, friends, well anyone for that matter, is so rewarding. Food defines moments to come together around a table, to share stories and tales, a ritual in many cultures and should never be lost. “The joy I receive from holding my cooking master classes is a true delight. What really pushes my buttons is when people stop me in the street to ask a foodie question or tell me about their creation or post pictures on my Facebook page of the dish they made. It just gets my happy on,” she said. As an extension of her popular restaurant, Fish D’vine, Rebecca is also the co-owner and chef of D’vine Catering and Events. “Our catering company delights in being able to create what our clients dream about. Food is an important part of tourism and being on holiday. “The food growth in our local market, producers going the extra mile and suppliers sourcing out the best local produce is a marvellous recipe to elevate our region on the foodie trails,” she said. A busy life which struggles with balance, is better than a life that struggles to be busy. Business owner and mum-on-the-go, Brooke Mansfield, struggles to find time to rest, but wouldn’t have life any other way. She is the co-owner of P&D Industrial with her husband Glen, as well as being a mum to three active children. “Life is busy and I probably take on more than I should, however I enjoy setting goals and achieving them. As well as looking after the management and administration side of the business, we have a lovely, small property with a menagerie of animals. I support my children with equestrian and footy. I’m a committee member of a couple of not-for-profit organisations, including being the treasurer of the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce, and have recently set up an equestrian equipment business, Willimay Horse Designs, with a friend.

PROSERPINE & DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL

“I don’t believe I quite have the balance right, and if you ask my husband Glen, he will say the horses are better cared for than him! But at the end of the day, I try my best, and hope that is enough,” Brooke said. Mechanic, Helle Harris, is also part of the P&D Industrial team. Her love of mechanical work came from helping her Dad. She rebuilt her first bike, a DT 125, and then was given the opportunity to do an apprenticeship at Saraji Mine. Like Brooke, Helle also runs to a busy schedule. “Life outside of work is busy; I’m the secretary for the Proserpine Hack and Pony Club, and try to squeeze in my own passions; my dogs, riding horses and photography, as well as looking after the maintenance on our five acre property. With support from my husband and family, we make our busy lives work,” Helle said. A passion which both women share is their love of horses. Brooke started her career as a veterinary nurse and has a love of critters big and small. “I do miss working with animals, especially working with cattle, so when I get the chance to help out in a cattle yard I jump at the opportunity. I do love my ponies, we have three thoroughbreds and I enjoy travelling with them to competitions with my daughter,” Brooke said. While some blokes who enter the shop may look past the ladies, Brooke and Helle certainly know their nuts from their bolts. “Some are surprised when we can identify their bearings or when they realise that we have made their hydraulic hoses. We don’t take it to heart, we realise it’s traditionally a male-dominated industry so we enjoy breaking those stereotypes.” With a large range of tools, hydraulics and industrial supplies ready for any application, P&D Industrial are your solution under one roof. “We call ourselves the ‘One Stop Industrial Shop” Visit the friendly team on Main Street in Proserpine to find the right tool for the job.

MAKE OVER BY : Jess Bridge

MAKEUP BY : Loll Doll Makeup by Lauriely

MODEL : Faye

1. The Colour To accentuate Faye’s olive skin and hazel eyes I decided to change the all over look of her hair to a beautiful, deep rich mahogany brown using our ‘WELLA COLOUR TOUCH RANGE’. To tie in such a strong change of base I used ‘WELLA BLONDOR’ to scatter a ¾ head of foils throughout the hair to clean out the brassiness of the ends and brightening up the all over look of the hair.

AFTER

BEFORE

After my first consultation with Faye, what stood out were her beautiful hazel eyes and her great skin colouring and jaw line. Based on this I easily determined a fresh new colour and when realising that Faye is also a very busy woman, juggling two young children and owning and managing a vet surgery in Proserpine. I needed to determine a style that would compliment not only her looks, but her busy life as well.

I can understand why they would pick me for a make-over as I don’t spend much time on my hair and am quite boring with it to boot. Jess from Adam & Eve was a bit restricted as to what she could do as she knew I needed something low maintenance and out of my face while I’m working…. something I could tie back. The experience was a complete pleasure and soo relaxing – even complimentary wine or chocky bikkies with your coffee! I have never been in such a comfy chair for a hair wash either. They are akin to a dental chair, automatically tilting you back. My hair is looking much healthier and fresher thankyou Jess and I have a more modern cut, but still very practical for me to work with. The whole Make-Me-Over was fun and totally new territory for me. Laurelle gave me more make up than even I had on my wedding day! Lucky me to be pampered in this way. Thankyou CORE! Cheers. - Faye 60 www.corelife.com.au

2. The Cut I loved the length on Faye, I just didn’t think it had enough flare for her strong, fun personality. Although I was working with fine hair Faye has a lot of it so it made it easy to give it the funky style it needed without having to take much length off. I gave Faye a slight concave taking the bulk of the length off through the back, while keeping it longer through the front. I added in some graduation through the back and a long layer through the rest.

3. Style Using all the WELLA SP products I created a soft, flattering and fun style to show off this new look for Faye. Initially preparing the hair with ‘dry shampoo’ to give it some grip to achieve a textured wave, I then took section by section and used a GHD straightener to curl softly. Once I reached the top section I used ‘dust powder’ to give body and back combed. Finishing off with a light spray of ‘hairspray’ and ‘shine spray’ then brushed the curls out to give a sexy, tussled look.

A TAN IS A SCAR! Did you know that North Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world?

Everyday I see people seeking treatment for sun damage. Most people aren’t actually aware that the conditions they are presenting with are caused by the sun. These conditions include wrinkles, broken capillaries, hyper pigmentation and dull, lifeless skin.

rays responsible for sunburn (UVB). But don’t reflect UVA rays, which cause photoaging and some forms of skin cancer. They contain ingredients such as PABA, octylmethoxycinnamate, oxybenzone and benzophenone.

These are all examples of photo damage, caused by UV exposure. The scariest thing is, these are just the aesthetic problems associated with sun exposure. Many of my clients have also experienced more serious repercussions, from not being sun safe. Laser, excisions, skin grafts or painful, topical applications of creams and photodynamic therapy.

Physical sunscreens are the only true sunblock, as they sit on the skin and reflect UVA and UVB. But the rule, with physical blocks is; you move it - you lose it! They wipe off, they sweat off and they definitely wash off! So re-application after short intervals is necessary. But they generally don’t irritate the skin, or cause breakouts, like some chemical sunscreens do. A true SPF factor doesn’t really apply to a physical block, either. This number relates to how long a chemical sunscreen absorbs UV light. Really! Physical blocks contain things like zinc and titanium dioxide and are also available as a dry alternative in good quality mineral makeup, such as Jane Iredale (my favourite!)

Sun protection is essential in our everyday lives. Not only when swimming, playing sport or holidays. Hats, sunglasses and long sleeves are great, but don’t forget your sunscreens, as light can reflect off water and other surfaces, hitting you from all angles. Unless you wear gloves, when you are driving, you may also want to apply sunscreen to your hands. They often age prematurely! Your choice of sunscreen is very important. Unfortunately, not all sunscreens are equally effective. Chemical sunscreens absorb the

Is your child keeping up in the classroom? Could your child have a Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)? It’s one of the most common classroom hearing pathologies. Common signs of a potential Central Auditory Processing Disorder in children includes: • difficulties following instructions • poor listening ability in noisy places • difficulty with learning at school, and • being distracted or easily fatigued at school. Central auditory processing refers to the efficiency and effectiveness with which our brains and auditory areas decode and use the information we hear. It’s essentially how well the ear talks to the brain and how well the brain can understand what it’s being told. When our brain and auditory system works normally we can pick out the important parts of the sounds we hear, filter out any noise, and fill in any gaps to make sense of what we have just heard. This complex

process uses a wide range of skills to help us make sense of the sounds we hear. Skills like locating the buzz of our alarm clock in the morning, focusing on a conversation in a busy café, and clearly understanding a teacher in a noisy classroom. When something goes wrong in our brain and auditory system, the ability for us to make sense of the sounds can become impaired, even though we can still ‘hear’ the sounds. A disorder of the brain’s auditory system most commonly results in difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise, and could be the result of a Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). It’s often difficult to identify the causes of CAPD. Everyone’s brain auditory system organisation is different which means CAPD can affect everyone differently. Conditions, like chronic ear infections in children’s early years, could also mean they are at a greater risk of developing a CAPD. Children with CAPD are more

likely to have behavioural, emotional, and social difficulties. Problems communicating and learning difficulties can impact the development of self-esteem and feelings of selfworth. While these signs may be noticed early on, it isn’t until children are 7 years of age that we can accurately diagnose a potential CAPD. The first step in testing for an auditory processing disorder is to conduct a hearing test. This is to establish whether the presence of a hearing loss may be a contributing factor. After determining the child’s hearing thresholds, we then test more complex auditory processing skills. For children, we offer a screening test of your child’s spatial hearing abilities that mimic a classroom situation. Once we have the result of this test we can then investigate your child’s auditory processing abilities and identify any potential presence of CAPD. While there is no single ‘cure’ for CAPD, there are several

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

remediation strategies for children which can be discussed with your audiologist. These may include: • listening strategies for the classroom • active communication techniques for daily life • listening exercises or computer software programs to improve auditory processing skills; and • assistive listening devices such as Bluetooth microphones. Early identification and remediation of CAPD may potentially lessen the likelihood that any secondary problems may emerge. If you are concerned, schedule a consultation with your audiologist now to rule out or identify the nature of your concerns.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

When our sleep is disrupted on a regular basis, this can lead to an inflamed and leaky gut - especially when it happens in combination with a poor diet. A disrupted circadian rhythm appears to change the inner ecosystem. This overgrowth of pro-inflammatory microbes is called dysbiosis, and can increase the risk for gastrointestinal discomfort like heartburn and gas. Consuming foods rich in probiotics is absolutely essential to supporting the integrity of the gastrointestinal lining. The circadian rhythm is the circulation of cortisol in the body, based on various times in a 24-hour day. A healthy individual will feel bright and energetic in the day and grow sleepy in the evening. If you have issues with falling asleep easily, staying asleep, or if you wake up fatigued, these are all symptoms of adrenal stress. When we repeatedly disrupt the circadian rhythm and cheat our body of the sleep that it needs, we also disrupt the release of hormones that keep our cycle intact and increase our risk for: • Obesity

• Diabetes

• High blood pressure

Inflammation

• Heart disease

Depression

Go to bed early, as there is a greater amount of slow-wave deep sleep, which is the most restorative sleep. Aim for eight hours of sleep a night, some will require a little more, while others will function just fine on seven hours if it is quality sleep. Get up early and start to move, a walk in the morning light will help you sleep better that night. Your last meal of the day should have been a calming grain-like seed (quinoa, millet, buckwheat or amaranth) that helps create more serotonin (which then turns into melatonin). Melatonin, often called the most potent antioxidant in the human body, is critical to restorative sleep. A natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in your brain, Melatonin increases with darkness, causing drowsiness. It then decreases with the morning light, and you begin to wake up.

GUM DISEASE

What does this mean? Is it serious?

Gum disease involves the gums, bone and other areas of support for teeth. Gum disease may affect any age group, but is more likely to occur in adults. Most people have times in their lives when they do not brush as effectively as usual. The plaque that may accumulate during these times may lead to infection and inflammation - signs of gum disease. The mildest form of gum disease is called gingivitis. For many people, gingivitis is the most severe consequence of plaque build-up they will experience. However, some people may develop a more destructive form of gum disease, known as periodontitis. With this form of disease, irreversible damage may occur to your gums and other areas of support for your teeth. It is important that your dentist assesses whether gingivitis and/or periodontitis are present in your mouth, and to treat either disease if they are present. Get your gums in good health!

2 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR GREENS

Mighty matcha Matcha launched into the headlines when shots of the green beverage were the ‘it’ drink at New York Fashion Week, but what is it? Matcha is powdered green tea, so instead of drinking the infusion from the leaves, you are ingesting the leaves themselves, a more potent form higher in antioxidants.

HOW DO I CONSUME IT? Matcha quality is key, look for it in its purest form. To gain maximum benefit, drink it as a tea, but to get used to its strong taste, you can start by making it into a latte or boost your baking by including it in your biscuits or banana bread.

An avo a day.. It’s not new news to find out that avocados are good for us. They are packed with a higher concentration of potassium than bananas and are full of carotenoids which work as antioxidants in your body. They are also full of fibre and loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids.

HOW CAN I EAT MORE AVOCADOS? With their creamy texture, avocados are one of those foods you can slip into almost every meal. Apart from the usual ‘smashed’ application on toast or with nachos, you can use it as a substitution for butter or oil in your baking. Surprisingly, blended smooth with some cacao powder and natural sweetener, avocado can form the creamy base for a decadent chocolate mousse.

Professional

Woman? You can’t afford not to read this! As a professional woman, you are beyond busy. As high achiever professionally, and often with a family as well, you are driven to succeed, and time is your most valuable resource.

A decade of research has found a far more immediate benefit of exercise, that relates directly to your professional success - its impact on the way you think.

What about exercise? Some of you see it as something ‘physica’ - a way of improving health or appearance, so it falls way down the immediate priority list each day.

Mental firepower is now known to be directly influenced by our exercise regime. How we perform at work has been directly linked with what exercise we are doing.

The cognitive benefits of regular exercise: • Improved concentration

• Prolonged mental stamina

• Sharper memory

• Enhanced creativity

• Faster learning

• Lower stress

The same studies showed a very real effect of elevating your mood, which can supercharge your attitude at work, helping you to build better interpersonal connections and foster collaborations. One study of a company with 200 employees, measured the fluctuations within individual employees on days they exercised, compared to days they didnt. On days they visited the staff gym (before work or lunchtime), they managed their time more effectively, improved their efficiency and

output, and reported feeling more satisfied and less stressed. Think about that…. making time to train DURING your normally busy day, actually IMPROVES your productivity, even though you have less time to have your nose to the grindstone. It also IMPROVES efficiency, time management, your mood and job satisfaction, and DECREASES your stress levels, mentally and physical.

IF LOOKING BETTER, BEING HEALTHIER AND LIVING LONGER ISN’T ALREADY ON YOUR PROFESSIONAL TO DO LIST, THEN BEING BETTER AT YOUR JOB THROUGH IMPROVED MOOD AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION SHOULD BE. www.airliefitness.com.au

Five Fit Years I WHEN YOUR FITNESS INSTRUCTOR TELLS YOU THE REASON HE DOES HIS JOB IS BECAUSE HE WANTS TO HELP PEOPLE, YOU KNOW HE HAS YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. Kay established Muscle Garden Fitness 5 years ago. He saw how much his fellow Mackay residents were struggling to get motivated in their fitness goals. He named his business ‘Muscle Garden’ because, “Just like plants would die if they were left un-nurtured, so too would our bodies. We are a garden of muscles that needs to be looked after.”

Kay started Muscle Garden because he had a deepseated urge to help people and knew that if he could pass on some of his enthusiasm, and core fitness principals, he could help people change their lives. One of Kay’s biggest success stories is Steve, a client of three years, who weighed 140kg when Kay first met him. “Back then he was so out of shape,” says Kay, “that every little thing was hard for him.” Steve, who is now 54 years old, has lost 55kg, and can beat a lot of the younger crowd at boot camp. Muscle Garden Health and Fitness, is built on the principal that different systems work for different people, and each person’s strategy needs to be tailored to their individual needs. Kay uses a combination of weights, cardio and calisthenics, and offers a range of options that include; a gym membership, one-on-one personal training and group challenges.

They can be held anywhere in Mackay, from the harbor to the high-street, and give people a reason to turn up each week, plus a support system of up to 20 people who motivate each other to achieve their goals. Kay’s business has grown organically over the last five years. He started with small group training sessions at a local park, then moved into a friend’s gym before eventually owning his own gym on Wood

“I believe in growth,” says Kay, “that is a major part of my business, I love seeing my clients evolve from heavier to lighter, not so strong to stronger.” If you are looking to make major changes in your life and need the motivating support of a qualified professional, let Kay help you, and you too can become one of his success stories.

Favourite place in the world: Cable Beach in Broome, WA. I honeymooned there 18 years ago with my wife, Robby. Favourite Song: Boys from the Bush, because it changed my life.

singer himself and was inducted into the Australian Country Music Hands of Fame. Lee formed his first band with his sister, Tania, called the Blue Devils when he was ten years old and Tania only six. He learned to play the piano by ear, and at the time loved poetry, so began to add music to his words.

Patterson; Lee’s heartfelt writing led to his breakthrough first album.

Lee’s career received massive exposure when he won Star Maker in 1982. He travelled to America and was given some great advice by musician and producer, Garth Porter, most famously part of iconic Australian band, Sherbet.

The Boys From The Bush 25th Anniversary Tour will feature his classic hits, ballads and rural anthems that have won Lee a nationwide legion of fans that he prefers to call ‘mates’.

On the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in Corryong Victoria, a boy from the bush was born, who would later change the face of Australian country music. The grandson of a drover and son of a truck driver, Lee Kernaghan would eventually recall the heart of his country upbringing to create one of Australia’s great anthems, Boys from the Bush.

“Garth told me I needed to work more on my lyrics and I was encouraged to read “The Craft of Lyric Writing” by Sheila Davis. He told me, “I like your songs but they’re not quite hitting me. You’re a boy from the bush. Your dad, Ray, drove trucks through the Snowy Mountains. Your mum, Pam, is the daughter of a dairy farmer. Your grandfather, Pat, was a sheep and cattle drover. Write songs about that.”

Music was in Lee’s DNA. His father, Ray Kernaghan, is a gold and platinum country

Drawing inspiration from Australian poet, Henry Lawson and his contemporary, Banjo

This year, being the 25th anniversary of the release of Outback Club, Lee is touring Australia to celebrate the silver anniversary of his ARIA award winning debut album.

He has achieved a staggering 34, number one, chart hit songs, over his career and has been awarded 36 Golden Guitars. He has been named Hit Maker of the Decade, twice, in 2001 and 2011. This accolade is in recognition of Lee having more chart hits in Australia than any other country music artist in the world. Lee will be performing at the MECC on Friday 9th June 2017 with special guests, The Wolfe Brothers and his sister, Tania Kernaghan. And you won’t go hungry either with a variety of fare from the Hare Krishna vegetarian food to the more familiar burgers and everything in between. For more information wintermoonfestival.com

Throughout my life I have had two amazing women who have inspired me to be the best that I can be. Firstly, my mother’s strength, commitment and courage after I suffered third degree burns as a child. She encouraged me to be confident, and strong, and face the world head on. The other person whom I am extremely grateful to have in my life, is Elizabeth McIntosh. Eli has taught me to embrace her positive philosophy, in both my professional and personal life. My career has gone from strength to strength under her guidance and I continue to be in awe of her success and friendship.

The person who inspires me is Ellen DeGeneres. Not only is she the most generous person I’ve seen, but also never fails to do everything she can to inspire everyone around her, the amount of good deeds she has done are endless. Whether it’s helping someone desperately in need, or simply brightening up someone’s day, she always seems to put a smile on everyone’s faces. Ellen is someone who I have admired for many years, she has so much compassion for other people and wants to do nothing but help. As I have watched Ellen over the years, I have seen the impact she has had on so many people and making them want to give, just as much as she does, she has inspired me to do better and most of all be kind to one another.
